NATIONAL PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE 2021 NEW ZEALAND PIPE BAND CHAMPIONSHIPS
I
n the last year we’ve all been reminded of the important role events like this play in our lives and in our communities. We have also been reminded what a privilege it is to be able to enjoy each other’s company and our music in person. On behalf of all competitors and attendees I’d like to thank Kerry Marshall and his fantastic 2021 Organising Committee for the huge effort they have each put in to ensuring this event is able to go ahead. This Committee has had to deal with stress, issues and risks not encountered by any of their predecessors. That has required hard work, detailed planning and steely determination, attributes
this Organising Committee has had in abundance. That we have another near record attendance from New Zealand bands is particularly pleasing. All bands have been impacted by Covid-19 and I want to thank all those bands who have entered. Without you we wouldn’t have a Contest. We have a full panel of New Zealand adjudicators this year and I would like to thank them in advance for what I know will be a testing couple of days given the large number of bands attending. I wish you all the best in your deliberations. I’d like to thank Mark Wilson, Contest Group Leader, Rod Miller, National Contest Supervisor, their Assistant Supervisors, Executive Officer Penny Wilson, the RNZPBA Management Team and the numerous other volunteers who together will help ensure bands
get to compete to the best of their abilities and their supporters and the public are able to enjoy the spectacle in comfort. The Napier City Council and Hastings District Council have been totally supportive of this event from the start and I want to acknowledge them and the businesses and other organisations that have provided financial and in kind support. Our contest is not a profit-making venture but it does contribute to the local economy. It is tremendously gratifying when local organisations get behind our event as enthusiastically as you have. On behalf of the RNZPBA Board and Management Group I wish all competing bands a safe, successful and enjoyable contest. Iain Blakeley President - RNZPBA

CONTEST WELCOME
I
t is my pleasure, on behalf of the organising group of the 2021 Royal New Zealand Pipe Bands’ Association championships, to extend a warm welcome to all bands people, supporters, judges and officials and visitors to Hawke’s Bay. I am deeply indebted to my colleagues who have expended much energy and contributed so much over the past two years to making sure that this event, one of the few major pipe band events to be held in recent times, is a quality event. Our thanks to the Napier City and Hastings District Councils who have helped us promote this event and to our sponsors and advertisers.
We also appreciate the help of all the volunteers who will be active over the days of the contest. We hope that you will all enjoy your time in Hawke’s Bay and that locals
will get to enjoy this top class pipe band event. Kerry Marshall Chair of the Piping & Drumming Academy of Hawke’s Bay

THE SPECTATOR’S GUIDE TO A PIPE BAND CONTEST
T
he 2021 pipe band championships comprises five senior grades plus the Juvenile grade. Because of the large numbers in grade four and the wide difference in standards, having two divisions should make for a more even contest.
These music events are judged by a panel of four comprising two piping, one drumming and one ensemble judge. Each judge ranks the bands on their performances and the rankings given to each band are added together to give a total points score.
The Championship in each senior grade is decided over two music events, the Set and the Medley. The Set (or MSR) comprises a 2/4 March, a Strathspey and a Reel. The music in this event is generally the more traditional Scottish music. The Medley is a selection of the band’s own choice of tunes within a specified time frame, and can include hornpipes, jigs and slow airs. The music in this event is quite often by local composers about an event or person.
For example, if one piping judge ranked a band second and the other piping judge ranked them third, the drumming judge first and the ensemble judge fourth, that band would have a total score of 10. The band with the lowest total would win the event. To decide the Championship the totals in both the Set and the Medley are added to obtain a final score. Again, the band with the lowest total score would be the Champion band for that grade.
The Juvenile event, for musicians 18 years and under, is also judged on the ranking system. Bands in this event play one medley selection. The Street March is a separate event, again in the five grades. Four music judges are joined for this event by three drill judges so each band is ranked by the seven judges to obtain a total score and again the lowest score wins. The Street March is over a measured course including two wheels (turns). Other events include the Mace Flourishing competition, an open event where the bands march on a prescribed course during which the Drum Major flourishes the mace and is judged on the skills exhibited.

National Pipe Band Championship The Marching Display sees the band, in a prescribed area and time, present a marching, musical and sometimes a novelty performance. This is judged by music, drill and celebrity judges.
The Drum Majors’ Championship is judged during the Street March based on dress, deportment, control of the band, word of command and drill.

The RNZPBA was established in 1928 to promote pipe bands in New Zealand. In 1952 the Association ran a separate C grade contest but it wasn’t until 1957 that this became a regular part of the national contest while in 2002 the Juvenile event was introduced. Over many years contests have been held at many locations throughout NZ with Hawke’s Bay hosting this national event in 1953, 1962, 1992 and 2002.

The NZ Youth Pipe Band Formed in 2010 the young pipers, drummers and Drum Majors of New Zealand have represented this country with distinction around the world. From winning performances at contests in Australia and Canada to appearances in Military Tattoos the band has been a nursery for youth over the past decade. The aim of the NZ Youth Band is to give talented youngsters the chance to showcase and develop their talents. When touring NZ they play at schools, stage concerts and run training sessions. The opportunity for school pupils to have-a-go when the band visits their school is an example of their willingness to share their talents and encourage others. In 2014 they toured Canada and the USA playing with the world champion Simon Fraser University Pipe Band and visiting Disneyland. The band has recently relaunched and through auditions and practices will continue to foster excellence amongst the young pipe band members in New Zealand. Whilst we have a focus on the competing side of the Pipe Band movement, you’ll see us out on ANZAC Day and other Community functions as well as the spectacular ‘big band’ Blossom and Christmas Parades with our friends from the Napier Pipe Band.
The Hawke’s Bay Caledonian Pipe Band as you see it today is the latest chapter in the legacy of competitive bagpiping and drumming in the beautiful Hawke’s Bay province. Following the popular rebranding from the City of Hastings Pipe Band having adopted a more provincial mindset, the band is currently enjoying a resurgence of growth and success in the competitive Grade 3 Championship.
Following the successful formation of a collaboration agreement with the Napier Pipe Band, members from throughout Hawke’s Bay are able to compete with Hawke’s Bay Caledonian Pipe Band whilst maintaining close links to their ‘home band’ for community parades and concerts. As members of the Piping & Drumming Academy of Hawke’s Bay, we encourage anyone interested in learning to play the pipes or drums to come along to the ‘Tremains Have-a-go’ tent’ at the Park
over the weekend to see what it’s all about. With Pipe Major Jarrod Cawood and Drum Sgt Dave O’Hanlon leading the charge, we really are growing from strength to strength. If you’re already ‘in the game’ and are interested in being a part of a competitive but family-friendly Pipe Band, please find us on Facebook and drop us line. With a membership base spanning 11-80 years of age, there truly is a place for everyone at your local pipe band.
The Band wears the modern Campbell of Argyll tartan and Argyll & Sutherland Highlander’s Hat Badge. We welcome all competitors, officials, families and supporters to our little slice of paradise for the 2021 New Zealand Pipe Band Championships. We hope you enjoy your stay!

NAPIER PIPE BAND
A
nzac Day, Blossom, Christmas and Art Deco Parades; fetes, retirement villages, rugby matches, Highland Games; you will have seen or heard the Napier Pipe Band at many of these events supporting the community with their music and display of Scottish history. You may even have celebrated the New Year in with Auld Lang Syne being played on the pipes on Marine Parade at midnight. The Napier Pipe Band has its roots in the time before Napier’s 1931 earthquake, tracking its history back to the Napier Pipers Club in the 1890’s. Over the years various bands such as the Port Ahuriri Caldedonian Society, the Waipawa & District, the Napier Ladies, Drones & Sticks and the City of Napier pipe bands have all been part of its history and have enjoyed
20
community involvement as well as competition success. The City of Napier Pipe Band were Grade 2 champions in 1980 while the Port Ahuriri Band won the Grade 3 championship in 1961. Today the Band focuses on entertaining the community with as many as 50 events in a year, keeping band members busy, but there is still the opportunity for those playing members wishing to pursue contesting to do so. A recent and successful collaboration with the Hawke’s Bay Caledonian Pipe Band (formerly Hastings Pipe Band), enables Napier’s pipers and drummers to join the ranks of a competing band to attend various contests. The two bands also parade together from time to time. The Napier Pipe Band has a loyal and strong network of supporters who
frequent the parades, in particular the concerts put on throughout the year. These concerts are also very popular with the public and will often include Highland dancers and other local artists. Band President, Julie Baxter, says that a strength of the Band is its varied playing repertoire and ability to entertain a crowd. The Band comprises a mix of all age groups, with youngsters joining others who have been part of the Band for over 40 years. Regardless of age, the commitment of all players is a real credit to the Band. This was most noticeable during last year’s Covid Lockdown where regular on-line practices took place allowing band members to keep their skill levels up, and learning some new music. This extended to pipers playing individually every Thursday to acknowledge essential

workers and, despite being unable to attend Anzac Day, all band members contributed to “virtual” commemorations and small socially distanced remembrances with their neighbours. The Napier Pipe Band thrives on recruiting, teaching and encouraging people of all ages in the art of piping and drumming, performing with pride and providing its members with an enjoyable pipe band experience. “Pipe bands provide young people with a great environment to develop their musical skills, work as part of a team and apply useful life skills” says Julie. The Band welcome enquiries from anyone wanting to know more about playing the bagpipes or drums. A “Have A Go” tent for this purpose will be set up within the Mitre10 Park grounds during the National contest for people to quite simply, “Have a Go”. Come along and talk to one of our members.

The Piping and Drumming Academy of Hawke’s Bay has as its vision the expansion of pipe band bagpiping and drumming activities in Hawke’s Bay.
Established to promote piping and drumming in local schools, the objective of the Academy is to increase the number of young people involved in the pipe band movement here in Hawke's Bay.
Why play in a pipe band? The benefits of learning a musical instrument are well known (such as mental, cognitive and emotional health benefits) but playing in a pipe band also develops team and people skills.
Beginning in 2013 the Academy is supported by the Napier Pipe Band Inc and the Hawke’s Bay Caledonian Pipe Band Inc which are very active in our communities.
Young people are able to make a contribution to their community with their music at many events – here in Hawke’s Bay the pipe bands perform in Blossom and Christmas Parades, at Anzac Day commemorations, for residents in rest homes and stage public concerts.
The Academy provides pipe band bagpiping and drumming tuition and other related activities to expand the involvement of young people in pipe bands in Hawke’s Bay.
Young people who play pipes and drums can compete in competitions such as the Hastings Highland Games, an experience of personal development.
