To thoseunusedtotheirdistinctive appearance,Arapawa sheepmayatfirst acquaintanceseemungainlyorevenugly, withtheirsomewhathunchedappearance andoften raggedfleece.Certainlythey bearlittleresemblancetotheirmore immediateMerinoancestorsandevenless totheMerinosfamiliartousalltoday.

“Intheunlikelyeventofanoutbreak suchasFoot-and-MouthDisease(FMD),it’s extremelyimportanttokeep trackingand tracingofanimalsaccuratelyrecordedand uptodate.
“Thisisparticularlycriticalfor movementsofmobsofsheep, which unlikecattleanddeerarenotcovered by theNationalAnimalIdentification Tracing programme. Thebest waytodothatis throughMyOSPRI.
“Notonlywillsheepfarmersbenefit fromusingMyOSPRI,butwe’llhave
abetterpictureofalllocations where cattle,deerandsheepmove betweenfor aresponseteamtouseintheeventofa diseaseoutbreak.
“Movementsrecordedusingpaper-based ASDsarenotkeptin acentraliseddatabase and wouldslowourabilitytotracea rapidlymovingdiseasesuchasFMD.”
PaperASDswillstillneed tobe usedfor saleyards,hesays.

•Coastalseasurfacetemperatures(SSTs) rangedfrom0.6˚Cto1.0˚Cabove average duringSeptemberwithmarineheatwave conditionscontinuingoffshoreofmany regions.Many climatemodelsshowan increaseinSSTanomalies(differencefrom average)duringtheOctober-December period.
•Soilmoisturelevelsandriverflowsare aboutequallylikelytobenearnormalor belownormalinallregionsexceptthe northandeastoftheNorthIsland, where theymaybehigherduetomorefrequent rainfallevents.
