Working together IS SUCCESS
N
estled in the Gladstone Hills along the sky line of Admiral Road, at Dandaloo Angus Stud, the next batch of the Thomson’s Black Angus bulls are being readied for sale. Dandaloo Angus Stud was established by David and Barbara Thomson in 1961 and their son Angus, along with Trish his wife, and their three children, took over back in 2007. The 500 ha stud is set on is medium to rolling hill country. Some spots reach 500 metres above sea level so they experience snow a few times a year and it’s always 4 degrees colder than in Masterton. Angus is the farmer backed up by Maggie who is 14 years-old and helps after school and at weekends. She also has a keen interest in dogs. Trish is a part-time lecturer of Early Childhood at the UCOL in Masterton and does the paperwork for the farm. Hamish is 16 and helps at weekends. He prefers the vehicle side of the farm. Isla’s 10 she’s the family’s chief pet carer. Their motto is “Coming together is the beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” “That’s a family and business model to follow as the kids get older things are changing with their independence, they all have a love of sport always being out and
about – so it’s a real effort to make sure Angus spends time off farm with them, says Trish. “Angus is on the Rathkeale Rugby committee as Hamish plays Rugby and boards at Rathkeale. Angus also coaches Maggie’s touch rugby team at St Matthews. Maggie plays netball in winter and Isla plays hockey so we both get involved with the kids sport as much as possible.” It’s a busy family with after school activities as well. Trish is on the St Matthews fundraising committee. Throughout the summer season from October to April the family are all active members of the Riversdale Beach surf club. Trish is a committee member and merchandise seller, Hamish and Maggie are lifeguards and Isla is a nipper. This year there will be 30-35 bulls for sale. There’s a range of bulls from a couple of “stand-outs” to many sound mid-range bulls. “The auction starts at $4000 and it’s up to the clients how much they have in their budget. It’s fantastic to see clients getting really consistent results year after year at the weaning fair.” “We warmly invite all clients along to the bull sale on the 8 June at 12 noon. Come and catch up and grab something to eat with us and have a bit of the day off your farm visiting ours. The sale will be on bidr

We are lucky enough to have clients return year after year to our sale. That’s what keeps you doing it – relationships, consistency and client results.”

Top bull insurance claim MIGHT NOT BE WHAT YOU EXPECT FMG’s bull claims’ insights
Rural insurer FMG says 40% of claims received relate to injuries in the paddock.
F
MG Area Manager Hayden Dunne says paddock injury claims are higher than the number of those FMG receives for transport injuries, pizzle injury and fighting injuries.
“Our claims’ data tells us that in the paddock, the most common injuries occur to a bull’s back, hip, pelvis or hocks, and sadly these often lead to the bull being euthanised,” says Hayden. As bull sale season is underway FMG hopes these insights will help farmers minimise disruption to their business. Farmers can limit the risk of injury by avoiding rocky and hilly terrain when grazing and mating bulls.
Other insights are that 1 in 20 claims involve bull fighting, 30% of claims are related to pizzle injuries and lameness contributes to almost 1 in 10 bull claims. “FMG regularly attends bull sales and the team are looking forward to catching up with breeders and buyers around the country again,” says Hayden. FMG Client and Angus New Zealand Board Member, Andrew Stewart says FMG understand bulls and the sale process. “We really value having people onsite at a sale and FMG has both breeders and buyers’ best interests at heart, and they give us good advice.”
40% of claims relate to injuries in the paddock
30% of claims involved injury to pizzles
Tararua Breeding Centre recommends using bulls of a similar size or larger than the heifer to reduce the potential for pelvis and/or pizzle injury. Avoid bulls grazing and mating on rocky or hilly terrain. FMG’s claims’ data shows that in the paddock, the most common injuries occur to a bull’s back, hip, pelvis or hocks often leading to the bull being euthanised.
Common trends show high frequency of broken pizzles during mating seasons. Other claims are often surrounding deformities of the animal. All bulls should be checked/tested prior to purchase and during mating to decrease the chance of penis damage, genital warts or other genetic issues. Checking the bulls in the first days of mating is crucial to ensure they are performing correctly, penetration of the cows is seen, and no injuries have occurred.
1 in 20 claims involve bull fighting These claims relate to bulls breaking their legs or backs during mating while other bulls are in the paddock or neighbouring livestock escape into the paddock. Fewer bulls in mating groups can not only reduce the chance of injuries but also increase the number of cows being served due to less bull fights. Keeping mating groups at least a paddock apart and/or separated by electrified fencing can reduce the change of fence-to-fence liaisons.
Lameness contributes to almost 1 in 10 bull claims Lameness claims often occur in the paddock or during mating especially on rocky ground or when the bull is in a laneway frequently. When buying bulls always check the feet and legs, if possible, on concrete, so any defects, old injuries and cracks can be assessed. Bull’s semen quality will deteriorate when bull is lame, so it is important to remove the bull from the mating group and treat if needed.

Quality BEFORE
s Turiroa approaches 78 years of careful, selective breeding Stud Master Andrew Powdrell takes a minute to reflect on a few things when asked about the 250 strong Turiroa cow herd!
“We strive to be a balanced multi trait herd and that comes back to getting the balance right,” says Andrew. “The cow herd is the engine room here and the bulls they produce show case that. We breed good cows to breed good bulls.”
Andrew is really pleased with the quality of their cow herd and having just had them through the yards recently for weaning and MCW (mature cow wgt) weighing was a chance to evaluate them one by one. “We threw a few older cows out for age (12 and 13 years) and a few for wear and tear but to be fair it was hard to find faults to cull on which is what we want.” “A deep, solid matron is what we are

QUANTITY after, around 600 kg’s is a good weight and we have criteria that they must meet as well. My grandfather Walter who founded the stud in 1944 told me to keep your females feminine and your males masculine and we have always stuck to that. Sometimes you see a plainish little cow with a thumping 340 kg bull calf on her which is nice to see. It’s about maternal function.” “Last year Turiroa had their strongest ever sale selling 52/52 bulls and averaging $13,860. Seven bulls were sold to studs with a top price of $60,000 - Turiroa 19Q412 sold to Atahua and Merchiston.
What was really pleasing is that there were bulls for every budget with 29 selling for $10,000 or under.” “The 2020 sale was also a real highlight for the Powdrell family with Turiroa Ragnar 18P224 selling for a then NZ on farm record price of $104,000 to Kaharau and Orere and Turiroa Complete 18P250 selling for $86.000 to Oregon Angus. Both these bulls were by Turiroa Complete 16M013, the seven Complete sons averaged a whopping $33,000.” “In fact looking back over the past 20 years there has been many highs. In 2002 Turiroa set a then Australasian record sale
price for an on farm sale of $9,388.00 when Ace 989 of Turiroa sold for $60,000 to a syndicate with eight other stud bulls being sold that year. In 2010 Turiroa Power 08490 topped the National Sale selling to Kaharau Angus for $26,000. In 2012 Turiroa Breaker sold for $72,000 and the sale averaged a whopping $10,927 selling nine bulls to studs that day.” “In 2001 Turiroa bred and retained Turiroa Burke 22. Burke’s semen was in hot demand and was sold around NZ and Australia. A son of Burke was the highest selling bull in Australia of that year and a daughter won at the Sydney Royal Show. Many prominent stud breeders said Burke was the best looking Angus Bull they had ever seen. He was a real stunner and was such a good doer we had trouble freezing

his semen at the time. Burke was out of a very good cow called Turiroa Floss 365 who went back to our very successful “Wisdom” bloodlines many years ago. Floss was also the Dam of Turiroa 848 who was also widely used in NZ and Australia as well.” “Returning to the farm in late 1999 and after some discussion with my parents Rick and Olivia, who have been pivotal in the success of Turiroa over many years, I identified the Wisdom line as being a very successful family within the herd so I set about ensuring this line carried on. The Wisdom line has produced more than 20 stud bulls over the years as well as many top end commercial bulls and continues today with senior Herd Sire Turiroa Tyrant 14843 being a descendant of that line also the Complete bloodline can be traced back to the Wisdom strain as well.” Bulls of yesteryear like Turiroa Ace 989, Turiroa 848, Turiroa Burke 22, Turiroa 688, Turiroa 808 and others were high profile bulls of the time and more recently Turiroa Ramble, Rumble, Tyrant and Complete all trace back to this strain.

Informing New Zealand BEEF’S PROGENY TEST George Tatham Director Beef + Lamb New Zealand
P
rogeny Test is coming up with some interesting findings.
The first is the relatively low correlation between Body Condition Score (BCS) in cows and fat depth measurements in heifers and bulls. The programme’s science team, led by Jason Archer, found this correlation to be only 25 per cent, which makes a focus on EBVs for fat a blunt instrument for indicating a cow’s ability to hold her condition through winter.
Early results suggest that it could be better to measure BCS and create an Estimated Breeding Value (EBV) based on that as a more reliable indicator of a cow’s ability to maintain body condition during feed deficits. The other finding was the link between sires and a heifer’s ability to get back incalf at her second mating. They found there was no variation between sires and a heifer’s ability to get in-calf for the first time as a yearling, but there was variation when it came to getting that heifer back in calf a second time. As farmers know, that second mating is the important one because that inability

bull-sale workshop which will focus on getting the most out of the investment in genetics.
While Covid-19 has disrupted extension activities initially planned by the Informing New Zealand Beef programme, online workshops have been developed in the lead-up to the bull buying season.
While a planned in-person Beef Breeder Forum run in conjunction with breed associations will no longer be held in early May, a short webinar is being organised for stud breeders as an alternative.
These include a workshop based on the Better Beef Breeding workshop which covered topics such as setting breeding objectives, breeder selection, using EBVs and structural assessment.
One of the goals of the INZB programme is to collect data from commercial beef enterprises as traditionally it is stud breeders who performance record and whose data is used to generate EBVs.
These will be followed up with a post
Commercial breeders involved in the INZB programme will be running scaled-down versions of the progeny test, without the artificial insemination. They will be collecting basic data which will be used alongside stud data to calculate EBVs.

to get back in calf makes for a very expensive animal.
Over the next year, an industry survey will be one of the programme’s top priorities to understand what traits are important to both commercial beef producers and stud breeders.
This variation apparently disappears once the cow moves into the mixed-age herd, but there hasn’t been a lot of data generated at this early stage of the programme. Across-breed progeny test data is now being gathered on Pamu’s Kepler Farm near Manapouri in Southland as part of the Informing New Zealand Beef programme, with the team now looking for a second farm upon which to set up a progeny test, preferably in the North Island.

Cattle handling A NEW APPROACH
M
any handling facilities on many NZ farm were designed and build last century. Today our volume, tasks and type of animals we handle are in many cases vastly different than what the facilities were initially designed for. Consequently, the time spent to make them work, safety aspects and efficiencies are often compromised. For over 30 years TechniPharm has provided clients with modern steel smart yards and is happy to share some experience and guidelines which may help you when upgrading your facilities. The suggestions below are just some of the things to look for. 1) In designing new yards try think outside the square (literally!) and pretend they are not your yards but for someone else.... this helps in looking at it from a zero base. Often when we suggest or recommend something to others it’s not the same advice, we would give ourselves 2) Location: is the location of the yards, OK? Are there other locations which could be better? Look at cattle flow in and out, truck access, vehicle access for vets and professionals. New locations often allow new thinking, greenfield yards often work better, not because it’s a green field, but because clear thinking has allowed
new ways of approaching the design 3) What are the mob sizes you must work with, do all the animals have to be within the confines of the yards or can you use a holding paddock? Focus your spend on core handling rather than holding all animals. 4) What is the number of drafting pens you need and what size do the pens need to be? Yard space handling is not just about the # of animals it can accommodate, but also about how to move animals comfortably within the yards. Use animal *size ratio’s to yard space needed, than add whatever “clear space you need to work them “ *18-24 month animals need at least 1.8 m2 of yard space / animal
7) Safety, cattle and people do not mix well and mixing them can relate to unsafe practises and situations. Create a “safe area” screened off, where you do all animal handling tasks, as an example, by the headbail and cattle handling area. The use of one way gates “like the Technipharm Cattle Curtain” can also help in improving safety and increase stock flow as well as reduce labour 8) Working undercover improves output Create a cover over the handling area provides better stock flow and
improved working conditions Last but not least, get help from some outside expertise, we see many yards and many situations and can help bring a different perspective to your new facilities. And if the current age of the average yard is anything to go by, this expertise initial one-off cost be written of over many years to come in added benefits every time you handle stock. 0800 80 90 98 www.technipharm.co.nz
5) Stock flow is better if animals return to the same direction as where they came from. Design 180 degrees curves and pen returns to move stock where they came from to where they are going back to. 6) Stock are easily distracted and frightened of shades, shapes and rattles in the yards, this stops stock flow. “Blacking out races and visual distractions to open spaced areas creates focus to the area we want the animals to flow “light at end of tunnel.”

ViaBull SEMEN SPECIALISTS By Chrys Ayley
D
arren Williams founded ViaBull in May 2019 after spending 15 years working for CRV. His experience in semen collection, fertility testing and disease testing amounts to some 20 years in total.
The business is thriving and customers number about 30 including Focus Genetics, Waitangi Angus, Shian Stud, Tarangower Angus and Hingaia Angus. While the majority of his clients are based
in the North Island he is more than happy to travel to the South Island and has a couple of clients in Dunedin. Darren is totally independent and works one on one with his clients, which they seem to like, he says. He travels with a mobile lab and inspects semen on site but also takes specimens back to the lab and tests again. But it’s not just bulls that receive his attention as Darren offers on-farm services including fertility testing of bulls,
rams and bucks. He also collects unlicensed semen from farms and offers an AI service for on farm cows. “If you’re spending a lot of money on a bull collecting semen is insurance. Breeders can get pretty upset if a bull breaks down on them,” he says. Based not far from Hamilton, Darren is often on the road for several weeks and at other times he’s at ViaBulls new fully certified semen export centre. “This world class facility on Scotsmans Valley Road comprises 200 acres so there is plenty of room for your bull and for us to collect good quality semen and then have your bull come home in great condition.” Sending bulls to the export centre is an alternative to on-farm testing. The bulls are isolated and go through a series of health tests, qualify for export semen which is licenced, or the semen can be sold in New Zealand and be stored in nitrogen tanks.
faster whereas a bull can only do 20/30 cows a day.” Darren advises booking bulls in for their fertility testing in good time before the two year old sales. “I can M.Bovis test, BVD test and freeze semen too.” “Bulls can pretty much have semen collected all the year round although it does get busy from June to September as everyone wants semen then and AI time is around October.” Darren very much enjoys meeting farmers, helping them along with their genetics requirements and having bulls ready for sale with the guarantee they are fertile and healthy.
He believes that AI is the way of the future. “If you have a 60-80k bull at risk of injuring self but you’ve collected semen that bull could produce 50,000 straws a year, so obviously a lot more money can be made.”
Darren Williams offers on-ffarm services including fertility testing of bulls, rams and bucks.

Steven Joyce – CATTLE YARDS THAT FLOW!
S
teven Joyce farms near Dunback in Otago. He runs Hereford cattle and Romney sheep on about 600 hectares. Last year Steven upgraded to a new Te Pari Cattle Yard and Cattle Crush. “The reason I upgraded was because my cattle numbers were getting higher and the wooden yards I had weren’t cutting the mustard. So, I went the Te Pari way because I’ve heard a lot about them and once I got the concrete pad, which is non-slip and the big set yards I’ve got here they just flow so well. I should have done it 5 or 6 years ago!” said Steven.
fences. “Safety was a big factor, with the new laws for health and safety, having the cattle free area was definitely a good point about them. The only surprise was because I went the whole concrete pad was just how well the cattle stay on their feet with the non-slip concrete it’s just great, they just don’t fall over, it’s really good,” Steven says. Steven chose a Classic Deluxe Cattle Crush with a vet access gate at the back.

cattle enter, eliminating the need to climb into the pen – a huge safety benefit.
Te Pari Cattle Crushes and Yards are all made in NZ using high quality Australian steel and then fully hot dip galvanised after welding to ensure the best protection against corrosion.
“The yards work so well it’s easier just to bring them in now, because I know the cattle yards are going to flow, I know there’s never going to be an issue and they come into the yards really good so it’s a time saver,” Steven says.
One person is all you need to operate a Te Pari steel yard. Curved narrow races encourage animals to move to the front of the yard and a circular forcing gate lets you reduce the size of the forcing pen as

“The thing I liked the most about Te Pari was they came, and they did the whole job. They didn’t just supply the yards they actually put the concrete down and built it up for you. I approached them, they came with their drone, threw it up in the air and told me where the best place was for my yards and it was built in 6 weeks,” Steven says. As a one-man operator, cattle flow and safety were essential for Steven to be able to confidently handle cattle by himself. Steven’s Cattle yard design has a cattle-free working area which gives him a safe and secure area to work and store supplies. Personnel access gates are also included in Steven’s yard design to give him quick and easy access and exits from pens without the need to climb over

Bulls-KEEP YOUR EYES PEELED Harry Whiteside-Veterinarian, Vet Services Hawke’s Bay
W
ith our scanning equipment all but back on the shelf for another season we’ve had a little time recently to reflect on another year of cattle pregnancy results and follow up on some of the more disappointing outcomes. Whilst there are potentially many factors involved in a poor scanning result, bull failure is undeniably one that brings with it the heaviest losses.
Suspicion is obviously raised whenever we have entire mobs scanned “empty” but the alarm bells also ring when a higher than average empty rate occurs… those results above 20% “empty” are particularly suggestive of a bull breakdown. The pattern of pregnancy spread picked up at scanning can help shed a little light on some of the possibilities. If we see a number of early pregnancies without any “lates” it may indicate that the bull has started well but broken down long before his work should have been completed. This usually results from physical issues, most commonly a broken penis or leg/back injury. On the other hand if we see nothing but “late” pregnancies it might indicate that the bull has had a problem early in the mating season. This is often the
case when the bull has picked up an infection close to or at the start of mating. Infections raise the temperature of an animal and in bulls this can be disastrous as high temperatures render the sperm infertile. It takes up to 6 weeks for new healthy sperm to replace these “cooked” sperm…a whole 2 mating cycles!
When you consider that most mature bulls are carrying up to one tonne of weight and are often trying to negotiate the wriggling of a more agile heifer/cow and invariably on uneven ground, it’s not surprising that injuries to legs and backs are amongst the most common causes of a disappointing pregnancy result.
At Vet Services we have been busy in recent weeks following up on suspect sires ahead of the forthcoming bull sales in June.
Time and again when examining bulls we see a real reluctance of some individuals to mount. They show all the
right signs, curling their top lip, vocalising, manoeuvring into position but fall short of making that decisive move. This is a sure sign that pain in the legs or spine/pelvis is holding them back. It is not uncommon to see signs of arthritis in those joints under most stress during the act of mating, particularly the hips and the vertebrae of the lower back. The older the bull, the more commonly such problems are encountered.
One of the more common defects we pick up when examining suspect bulls is “corkscrew” penis, which does exactly what it says on the label! Bulls can be born with this defect but more often than not the problem occurs when the nerves controlling the penis are damaged as a result of an awkward mating. Another consequence of trauma is the oft cited “broken penis” which is basically a huge haemorrhage anywhere along the shaft that then prevents normal erection being achieved. Both conditions are good reason to render a bull unfit for mating. Now and then penile warts may present as a cause of poor pregnancy results. Sometimes the wart may cause an adhesion that prevents the penis from fully extending. More often than not however, friction during mating will cause the wart to bleed and it is this blood that renders the sperm infertile.

Pushing BOUNDARIES
T
he Whangara Angus Stud, based in Gisborne, has recently been taken over by Tom Sanson, a well-known and respected Gisborne-based farmer with a breadth of farming experience. He is joined by business partner and local veterinarian, Andrew Cribb. By combining their areas of expertise, they will push boundaries, in order to continuously improve their stock. The takeover replaces owner Patrick Lane whose family have been farming the hill country in Whangara since 1929. Tom and Andrew purchased the entire stud herd (350 cows) and the commercial herd (250 cows) in 2021 and are leasing
the farm from the Lane family for 20 years. While they are rebranding they are keeping the Whangara Angus Stud name. A new business has been established to enable the purchase of the stud and lease of the land. Sanibbs Worldwide Ltd is split 50/50 between the Sanson and Cribb families. Tom and Adeline Sanson have two daughters Eleanor, 4, and Abigail, 2. Tom also owns another cattle stud, breeding Simmentals. Adeline owns and runs an upholstery business. Andrew and Loren Cribb have with three sons Noah 16, Emmet, 10, and Fergus, 1,
and a daughter Lacey who is 9. Andrew and Loren are veterinarians who own and operate East Coast Farm Vets and Wairoa Farm Vets. The Sanson and Cribb families have employed an enthusiastic new team, made up of farm manager Christopher Richardson with wife Abby, Shepard Tom Dever and general farmhand Raymond Donald. Along with the 700 or so cows and their progeny they are also finishing approximately 8000 lambs at a targeted weight of 21kg. In the first 12 months since taking over they have already seen great improvements in production through the implementation of their new farming policy by manager Christopher Richardson. Most notably a 50 kg increase in calf weaning weight and increase of 18% in cow scanning percentage with calving condensed down from 5 months to 3 months.
and data. The cattle need to be great to look at but have the performance genetically that today’s market demands. This is a new, well-balanced team which has an exciting mix of experience with youthful enthusiasm and the ability to think laterally. Tom and Andrew are willing to utilise all the tools to breed cattle that fit our vision.
What’s for sale this year? 27 May open day 1pm-5pm - All sale bulls will be on display, everyone welcome 28 June 12pm sale day - 30 rising 2yo bulls
Plans initially include stabilising numbers and making adjustments to the herd/ breeding program Tom and Andrew think are needed. Then they’ll expand the stud increasing bull numbers to fulfil the demand they believe exists on the east coast: balanced bulls that offer performance and type at a respectable price. Their vision is to breed structurally sound, functional cattle backed by performance

Waiterenui and Hallmark-A NEW CHAPTER Hallmark Angus is incredibly excited to announce the coming together of these two herds.
W
aiterenui Angus is 108-year herd and the third oldest continuously run stud in New Zealand. It has played a key leadership role in the breeding of maternally orientated Angus cattle through generations of breeding by the MacFarlane family at Raukawa, Hastings. Highly regarded as the elite maternally driven, fertility orientated herd of highly recorded, structurally sound cows in New Zealand. We really do believe it to be the
quintessential maternal cow herd,” Max Tweedie of Hallmark Angus says. “The ongoing and generational constitutional challenge placed on the cattle at Raukawa - also known in the summer as the ‘Valley of death’ - is such a genuine commercial emphasis we know will transfer so well to our hills at Tutira, as they have done so in the past through females and sire bulls in our herd.”
“Will and Viv MacFarlane will continue to stay involved with the new breeding programme to ensure the fundamentals are maintained as the new herd climbs to new heights - hills, ridges, and gullies. The ‘boxed mobs’ will now calve over 500 stud females at Tutira. With 500 calving females this could be the largest in the country. Population genetics allows us larger selection differential and culling rates to push genetic gain.” “Will and Viv McFarlane bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to help Lucy and I achieve our goal of dropping all commercial cows for recorded females and move our business to being focussed on breeding bulls. We want to acknowledge Will and Viv who made a huge contribution, as have his predecessors, we’re really excited.”
From left are Kate MacFarlane, Viv MacFarlane, Will MacFarlane, Archie MacFarlane and Angus NZ President Joe Fouhy. Pictured after Angus New Zealand presented the family with a commemorative Angus Bull for reaching 100 years at Waiterenui Angus Stud. 13 March 2015 Photograph by Sarah Ivey.
influence on the value and performance of cows in cow country as land use change forces cattle to be more relevant and profitable in the face of adversity and challenge from dry summers and steeper country pushed into. We are hugely passionate about what we do and believe we have something to offer commercial farmers in our objectives reflecting theirs,” Max says. “In 2021 we held first on farm sale in a purpose built sales complex, complete with pub. Our first six sales were at Stortford Lodge. Last year we hosted over 300 people to a high seller of $48,000 and an average of $9632. Our second on farm sale will be on June 15 at 4pm.”
“This is a local transfer and a once in a lifetime opportunity to introduce cattle with the same breeding objective as ours with leading maternal data, soundness and type. Angus cattle are the all-rounders, the ultimate maternal cow which is why we were so interested in Waiterenui. There are only a handful of herds we’d be interested in looking at and the ultimate herd happened to be in Hawke’s Bay.” “We have a chance to have a genuine

armers fall into two groups. Those that farm to live, and those that live to farm.Stud breeders fall into the second group. The commitment and passion required to maintain and improve a breeding programme can last generations.
Cattle were domesticated from Aurochs about 10,000 years ago. These were a wild bovine species, with black coats and large horns, that roamed land now occupied by Pakistan and Turkey. Cattle spread with humans across the globe.Christopher Columbus introduced domesticated cattle to the Caribbean in 1493. Samuel Marsden brought the first cattle, Durhams’ (Shorthorns) to New Zealand in 1814. These were
While the numbers have dropped, the efficiency of the ewe has improved significantly. So has dairy cow production. Gains have also been made in the beef herd.
prized by early settlers for beef and milk, but also for their strength as draft animals breaking in country. They pulled logs, wagons, ploughs and carts. At the end of June 2021, numbers provided by Beef and Lamb indicate that there are approximately 4 million beef cattle in New Zealand, with 26 registered breeds. It would not be fair to ignore the fact that there are 6.28 million dairy cattle in the country. Like cattle, sheep were roaming parts of the earth nearly 11,000 years ago. They have fed us and kept us warm for centuries. Armies have been raised and empires built on the strength of the sheep’s back. Fortunes have also been lost. Sheep were introduced to New Zealand by Captain James Cook between 1773 and 1777. On the 30th of June 2021 there were 25.97 million sheep in the country. The number of sheep has continued to decline. Extremes of environment, floods, fire and pests challenged many of the early South Island run holders. Fortunes began to change when the first shipment of frozen meat left from Dunedin for Britain in 1882. This sped up the development of the dual- purpose sheep, and smaller scale farming became viable.
These gains have been made because passionate breeders continue to improve their genetic base. Its not all plain sailing though. Breeders deal with disappointment. Nothing worse than finding your best sire dead in the paddock. Breeders take risks and play the long game. Commercial farmers play the long game too. They are also able to take advantage of hybrid vigour to improve results. Most sheep and beef farmers have a mixture of sheep and cattle. One species complements the other. The ratio determined by topography, climate, infrastructure, finance, and personal preference. There is something in this catalogue for everyone. While land use change continues to put pressure on stud breeders everywhere, their improved performance leads to better outcomes for all farmers. And improved performance can only help the bottom line. Good luck to all those selling this year.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022
A lifetime in THE STUD GAME
A
t 82 Jon Pattison Secretary/ Treasurer of Hawke’s Bay Angus is stepping down and handing over his duties to Rachel O’Grady. He talks to Chrys Ayley about his life as a stud bull breeder. Jon’s father the late Ted (Edmund) Pattison was a stud bull farmer in Wairoa. One year Ted bought some older Angus studs from Mr Jefferson in Wairoa. There was one slightly lame cow amongst the bulls and nine-year-old Jon was given the cow which he says, started him off in the “stud game” and at one stage much later on he had 160 stud cows and 400 stud Perendales. Jon enjoyed accountancy at school and did his own books for the business but never took it up as a profession as “I couldn’t stand being indoors.” Currently he looks after the accounts for Hawke’s Bay Angus and arranges advertising for the group in two specialised stud catalogues. After 49 years in the Wairoa district Jon decided to try his luck in Hawke’s Bay and established Kahuitara Angus Stud in Waipukurau where he carried 600 SU cattle to 400 SU sheep. In 2006 the stud was sold and in 2018 the farm sold. Stock were dispersed all over New Zealand and some even went to Chile and later he moved to Havelock North. He says that at 82 his body is too
knackered by too much rugby and too much cattle handling to continue actively farming. Jon learned a lot from late Don Borke over 40 years. “If you asked a question you’d get an honest answer,” he says. “Don told me once that stud breeding is24/7, thank god, otherwise everybody would be in it. It’s the part that drives me, once you get into it, it’s so interesting. There’s not a lot I haven’t done on the stud scene.” “Stud breeding gets to you at some stage, it’s a different life, it upgrades and improves your farming. You look at how animals perform, what’s wrong with them, look at their weight gains… you’re doing all this sort of thing years ago that commercial farmers are starting to do now, but you’ll still see good farmers go and buy a bull and structurally its incorrect.” There’s quite a bit of homework that needs to be done before the sales and this year Hawke’s Bay Angus has a pretty good line up of commercial and stud bulls. Every year, and year by year, you see slight improvements. The major selling points in the Bay are the climate, the type of country and the fertility in Hawke’s Bay. You can usually find what you’re looking for within your area and you’re never 100% sure how they are going to do if you do buy out of the area. “You have your wins and losses.”
Jon Pattison is stepping down as Secretary/Treasurer of Hawke’s Bay Angus.

Continuing a FAMILY TRADITION
W
hat began as a “Humphreys & Son” partnership between George and Fred in 1920 at Strathallan Station has, over the 102 years, moved into a fourth and fifth generation at Wilencote. In 2021 Matt and Megan Humphreys moved back to the family farm and are the fifth generation of the Humphreys family to work at the stud.
Wilencote Polled Hereford Stud is located at Ngatapa, Gisborne, approximately 26km from Gisborne City. The property is 420ha (390ha effective) and is home to
300 registered Hereford breeding cows, including heifers. The contour is medium to steep hill country.
This past year the focus for Matt and Megan Humphreys has been on learning the ropes, as well as welcoming their first-born Ida into the mix. Matt is very excited and feels very proud to have the opportunity to carry on the cattle stud. Parents’ Peter and Susie are still integral to the stud, helping on the farm but also having more time for grandkids and leisure activities.
Matt’s prior experience includes working at Siberia Station in Taihape and then seven years as stock manager at Totangi Station before moving back home. He has a strong passion for farming and working with dogs and horses. He has a team of nine working dogs which are integral to farming at Wilencote given the terrain. The stud’s breeding programme is focussed on breeding bulls that have good structure, temperament, mobility and a certain ‘athleticism’, ensuring progeny have quality carcass traits. The stud’s breeding philosophy is about small, steady and incremental improvement – optimising and balancing traits within the herd. Last year Matt and Megan purchased two bulls from Otapawa and they are excited to see their progeny coming through in the spring. Driven by a desire to continually enhance the bottom line for their commercial clients, Matt and Peter know from feedback their bulls perform really well. When a client returns to buy more bulls in ensuing years, it’s very gratifying and is proof that the breeding philosophy practiced is working well.
Mattt tt andd Megan Humphhreys have been “learniing the ropes”” for the lastt year andd wellcomedd theiir firstt chhild.
In addition to the day-to-day operations, Matt and Megan have a number of projects in the pipeline. They have been working away at implementing a new stud recording system, are rolling out DNA testing across the herd and have some

This year’s sale is scheduled for the 8 of June at 2.30pm, when the three east coast Hereford studs will present their bulls on the Tuesday and Wednesday after Queens Birthday weekend. Thirty rising two year old bulls will be presented at the annual on-farm sale. Bulls are mainly sold to local farmers, with a small percentage heading out of the region. Matt is pleased with the progress this year’s sale bulls have made. Spring and summer have provided good grass growing conditions and stock have done well accordingly. The stud stands behind their bulls and pride themselves on structural soundness. Alongside the other Gisborne Hereford breeders, a three year structural guarantee is offered on all sale bulls.

Getting the best bull FOR YOUR BUCK
B
ulls contribute the majority of the genetic gain to your cow herd, and the impact of your bull buying decisions can be with you for a decade or more.
against the current breed average, compare that bull’s EBV within the percentile bands table (where the bull ranks within the breed range for each trait) or use the EBV graph.
Before thinking about what bull to buy, look at your current herd performance. With future production goals and market requirements in mind, have a clearly defined path of what you are wanting to achieve.
Indexes identify overall profitability and weigh up the balance of genetic merit across all traits for a particular production system. It is a single figure and represented as a dollar value. Pick the index that best relates to your system, identify the top percentage of bulls based on that index and then look at the bull’s EBVs, to make sure he has a top index by being strong in the traits you want.
Are you happy with your scanning percentages, calving pattern, growth rates and carcase quality? Once these breeding objectives are established, determining what trait or traits you want to maintain or improve is the first step. Then comes the critical decision of identifying a breeder with objectives that match your own. I encourage commercial breeders to pick up the phone and talk to stud breeders. Don’t be afraid to ask questions or ask to see genetic trend graphs. These graphs should show an upward trend for the traits that impact on your goals. To help you find the sires or sire, Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) are an incredibly useful tool as they are the best estimate of that animal’s genetic merit, as a parent, for particular traits. Irrespective of environment. To interpret an EBV, you can compare
I strongly recommend buyers study the sale catalogues before they go to a sale. Identify the bulls that are strongest in the traits you are looking for and go straight to those bulls on sale day to look at their structure and conformation. Without a clear plan, it is easy to get distracted by bulls that look good but might not have the genetics you need for your operation. Structural soundness is vital. No matter how good a bull’s numbers are, if he can’t do his job he can’t pass on his genetics. The Beef Class Structural Assessment system is a great tool to help buyers systematically check a bull for soundness. Once home, remember to take the time to settle your bull into its new home.
There is a wealth of beef breeding information and resources on beeflambnz. com/knowledge-hub. Breeders and farmers can also look forward to gaining access to new genetic
tools thanks to Informing New Zealand Beef, a programme supported by B+LNZ and the Ministry for Primary Industries. Visit blnzgenetics.com/informing-nz-beef for more information.

Kenhardt AngusA FAMILY BUSINESS
K
enhardt Angus was established in 1957 by Hugh and Gwyneth Crawshaw in Oxford. The family later moved north with their children. Hugh farmed in Gisborne and later moved to Nuhaka.
Hugh’s son Grant and his wife Sue Crawshaw now run the stud and have done so for over 35 years. Their children are all keenly interested in the stud and farming in general. The contour of the land comprises of moderate hill country with some native bush. Kenhardt runs the stud cattle under
commercial conditions to ensure longevity in the cattle produced. The trying conditions of a working Angus cow in a commercial situation is very much implemented at the stud and no luxury consumption is sacrificed. Currently the farm runs approximately 300 mixed aged cows which includes the pure New Zealand base of 60 breeding females. The objectives of the stud are focused on phenotypic and structural strength across all stud stock and the EBV traits desired by clients.

Otapawa Poll Herefords “Herefords are the leading efficient breed of beef cattle,” says Stuart Robbie, Stud Master of Otapawa. “Using Herefords in crossbreeding is one of the fastest proven ways to improve farm gate profits. This is one of the reasons why crossbred Hereford calves have topped most of the weaner fairs across New Zealand this year.” A common sense approach to breeding efficient and profitable beef cattle are the founding principles at Otapawa Poll Herefords - Proven genetics producing progressive sound progeny. “Carcase quality is especially important, it is proven that the Hereford is the most efficient converter of grass, and we are always refining and testing this in our breeding system,” says Stuart. The basic knowledge about Hybrid Vigour (Heterosis) has existed for more than 50 years but seems to have been overlooked in recent years as some breed groups are trending towards a genomics bred animal whilst offering selective premium incentives. “There are good reasons why our forebears utilized cross breeding for optimum profitability. We’ve observed that a commercial Angus herd can expect to achieve a 15% increase in weaning weights from Heterosis”. Hereford Sired Progeny will benefit from ongoing consistent advantages from feed conversion, to improved average daily weight gains, longevity, and fertility, while still conforming to the selection criteria of many premiums offered. “It is pleasing to see our clients continually topping the Weaner Fairs with Hereford and Hereford/Angus cross progeny. That is a constant goal for our breeding programme.” The table on right highlights an example of the Dollar value difference that can be achieved using crossbreeding.
Otapawa makes selecting for cross breeding easy. Identifying and selecting genetics which thrive in the environment in which you farm makes a lot more sense than trying to manipulate the system or environment to suit the livestock. We are a commercial farming operation ourselves, so we see the advantages first-hand that reflect our breeding selections from our Stud Hereford herd into the commercial herd. Longevity, maternal ability, and carcase quality are important profit drivers, and with heterosis, you get more Bang for your Buck. Another significant advantage to cross breeding is the utilization of the resulting female. The crossbred cow is undoubtedly superior in its characteristics for increasing performance across any herd. With the superior fertility of a cross-bred female, not only does she reach puberty earlier, allowing for ideal heifer mating, a higher rate of pregnancy throughout her life means significantly less replacements are required, resulting in an improved efficiency across the herd. We are putting forward a great line up of bulls this year, including sons from feature Sire TH Frontier 174E as well as progeny from Okawa Rommel, who was purchased in 2019 for $60,000. We encourage all cattlemen serious about increasing the profitability of their herd, particularity those with Purebred Angus herds, to come and see the bulls first-hand and discuss your breeding programme with us. At Otapawa we have a long-term commitment to our clients. Our purpose is to help improve your results through a focus on quality breeding.
This year Otapawa have 43 high performance station bred Bulls on offer. We welcome you to our inaugural Open Day on May 10th from 9am onwards for light refreshments and a tour of the Bulls. STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022
KayJay Angus – Established in 1958 THIS IS OUR 64TH YEAR OF BREEDING
By Roddy Kjestrup
K
ayJay Angus run by Roddy and Sam, and Neil and Joan Kjestrup is located 30 minutes east of Masterton on the eastern hills of the Wairarapa. The total farm size is 590ha consisting of 60% hill and 40% cultivatable land. The 185 stud cows and heifers are born on the hills and stay on the hills through their lives. The stud operation is run along-side 2300 ewes, with the cows playing a key role in the success of the sheep performance. The Eastern hills of the Wairarapa are
generally winter wet being exposed to the cold south east and southerly winds. Then they experience long dry summers with the last couple of seasons being the exception. We farm to the seasons with the ability to wean both sheep and cows early if necessary. Therefore, we need a moderate frame cow that milks well and rare calves that display rapid growth through to weaning with many of our cows weaning around 60% of their own body weight. We aim to breed an Angus female that will out strip any cross-breeding program.
The KJ animal then has to add value at every stage of its life whether it is male or female. Only the best females born each year make it into the herd, they are put to a bull as a yearling and then expected to get in calf every year thereafter.
sale rostrum and five bulls selling for stud duties including KayJay BigMac Q324 who sold for $56,000 to Shian Angus. The biggest highlight of all though was the number of local and return clients repeatedly endorsing our program.
KJ bulls are becoming well recognised for adding depth and thickness into commercial breeding programs around the country with bulls being sold all over the North Island and some even heading south. Our clients are consistently topping weaner and yearling fairs with a premium being realised from the demand by finishers for these genetics.
This year we have 44 bulls coming through to sale with the last sons sired by Merchiston Steakhouse who has bred phenomenally well with close to 60 sons selling at auction for an average of over $11,000. He is a sire that breeds cooky cutter consistency and never leaves a tail end. We also have the first sons by Taimate laser N22 the $86,000 high seller, coming through to sale on the Friday the 3rd of June at 12noon.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022
First two year-old sale
M
ark and Sherrie Stokman feel they have a duty to provide the beef sector with cattle that are improving year on year. The improving genetic gains within their herd, combined with the premiums for qualifying Angus cattle, make Stokman cattle very appealing for the commercial farmer.
Offering 30 Powerful Poll Hereford Bulls
Traditionally Mark and Sherrie have focused on their yearling sale, as they usually have one of the top averages for their bulls. However, they have grown the cowherd and a number of clients have expressed interest in purchasing two year old bulls. The bulls that have been selected for this year’s 2 year old sale have EBV’s that are more suited to breed
cows, with stronger birthweights and growth traits, the focus of the sale they are running for the first time in June. Sherrie is an American and has Angus cattle running through her bloodlines: her family, Sitz Angus, have bred Angus cattle in the Rocky Mountains of Montana for over 90 years. In 1989 Sherrie’s father, Bob Sitz Sr. was tragically killed in a tractor accident. At the time, Sherrie Sitz (as she was then) was engaged to Mark Stokman and was due to move to New Zealand. However Sitz was an intensive operation so Mark moved to Montana to help, staying for seven years, assisting with running the operation and, “I also developed a real passion and love for the Angus breed,” Mark says.

e FOR STOKMAN ANGUS They moved back to New Zealand in 1997, purchasing a dairy farm in the Waikite Valley, for their main income. Their passion for Angus wasn’t lost and they brought to New Zealand 30 embryos from a few of Sherrie’s cows she had to leave behind. Stokman Angus was born from these embryos and today the operation encompasses 380 registered Angus stud cows, 80 commercial autumn calving Angus cows and some fattening stock. Mark still runs the overall farm management, with Sherrie at his side when time outside of administration, promotional work and cattle registrations allows. Their youngest son Jake has been

home on the farm since completing his degree at Lincoln University in 2020. He works with Craig Moyes making sure the farm is operated in a high standard. Jake has a real interest in the genetic side. Craig and Courtney Moyes have been part of the Stokman team for three years, and Courtney tends to the gardens and maintenance at the sale barn facility, ensuring they’re always looking fabulous. The sale barn which overlooks Lake Ohakuri, will also be used to host weddings and functions. Of course bull sale time is all hands on deck and that includes eldest son Cameron being wrangled back from his work in Christchurch.
Stokman Donna 0149, born in 2010, has calved 10 years straight having 11 calves, and due to calve AI bred again this spring. Fertility is important in the Stokman cow herd.
Breeding Program Emphasis on the female is of the utmost importance at Stokman, as the quality of the female is the key to a successful breeding program. Their original cows went back to the great pathfinder sires of the Angus breed in the USA, bulls known for producing outstanding females. Stokman cows must have the right combination of femininity, fertility, mothering ability and have a moderate frame size with good volume. They also place emphasis on udder quality, calving ease and fast, early growth. All the cows calve as two year olds, and to stay in the herd they have to be back in calf every year. They only retain the top 70 heifers to come back into the herd each year. Every technological tool available is utilised to ensure they know everything there is to know about their cattle. Every animal is HD50K DNA

tested at birth, and carcass scanned – even the culls. Information is power in a stud operation. Every animal that goes through the sale is also fertility tested by Guy Haynes of Totally Vets, ensuring the bulls are 100% ready to go when leaving the farm. Semen is sourced from the USA, Australia and also from some Stokman young sires. The top calving ease and short gestation bull here in New Zealand in 2021 is Stokman Real Deal, bred right here in the Waikite Valley. Profitable cattle for the commercial farmer are low input, high output. Stokman mature cow weights are 14kg below breed average and with 200, 400 and 600 day growth EBVs on or above breed average which creates really efficient cattle. You can’t argue with the science behind EBVs and getting enough IMF into carcasses to ensure carcass premiums are reached is also really important.
The sale barn overlooks a picturesque lake.

Born and raised on a family farm in Canterbury he also spent time farming in southern Hawke’s Bay. Sam’s family are Kate, his wife, and their two children Ollie 14, and Eva, 10. Kate is a part-time teacher aide and also works at the Takapoto nursery. There are three farms: Beacon Hill, a lease property of 290ha, which is the main breeding property of easy hill country. TAKAPOTO ANGUS STUD Takapoto Estate, the home farm, is 220ha but only 130ha are farmed as the remainder is devoted to parkland, lawns and the equestrian centre. Here are 55 first calving heifers, and 30 mixed age cows, some involved in an embryo transplant programme. Normally Takapoto runs 50 R1 bull calves and 50 R1 steer calves and by the end of June have about 40 R2 trade cattle. Then there are 100 ewes and they run 50 European Red breeding hinds as well.
Raffles farm is a new acquisition of 80ha with finishing stock and 100 R1 heifer calves. Thirty sport horses are also grazed here. “Our Takapoto Angus herd was established in 2011 with the purchase of a top line of registered Te Mania Angus heifers. This was followed in 2012 with heifers from Te Mania, Kakahu and Mount Linton studs. These females provided a very sound base from which the current registered herd of 150 cows has evolved,” Sam says.
“The focus of our breeding program at Takapoto is multi trait selection, however structural soundness, conformation and temperament is of paramount importance, as is a strong emphasis on fertility and positive carcase traits. Our cows have a moderate frame, and that combined with proven ease of calving means we breed bulls that will thrive in any environment, whether it be beef breeding or dairy.” “All our cattle are run under commercial conditions, on an all grass system, with hay or baleage supplemented when required. The farm is operated under biological farming principals, with minimal use of chemicals and animal health products.” “We sell all our bulls as yearlings in our on-farm spring sale, so clients can be assured they are always getting the full crop to select from. If Sam weren’t busy enough he has another project in the pipeline involving Irish Moiled, a dual purpose rare breed. His aim is to breed up towards pure breed using Takapoto cattle and pure Irish Moiled bulls. Ultimately the aim will be to sell meat to Irish pubs and select butchers.

Why Simmental? WHY NOT? By Tracey Neal of Potawa Simmentals
A
s the Simmental Cattle Breeder’s Society of New Zealand celebrates their 50th Anniversary we look at what makes this breed so attractive. Simmental are among the oldest and most widely distributed cattle breeds in the world, estimated in 2009 at between 40 and 60 million head and found on every continent except Antarctica. Brought to New Zealand in the early 70’s, their adaptability means they are found from Ahipara to Owaka. The modern Simmental breed has been developed using phenotype (observable characteristics), estimated breeding values and recently also using genotype (an animals’ genetic makeup). Bred and
refined by astute breeders over 50 years to best fit the needs of commercial farmers in New Zealand, almost 50 per cent of the major bull breeding herds running Simmental studs also have a crossbred component giving them ‘skin in the game’. What’s the attraction? Hybrid Vigour: no such thing as a free lunch? – think again! Because they are a European breed, crossing with a British breed means F1 hybrid vigour – more growth, meat and yield without steroids, and earlier maturing – environmentally friendly already. Ease of calving: in one of the largest across breed evaluations, USA MARC data showed Simmental as having the
lowest assisted birth percentage of the 4 Euro and 3 British breeds evaluated *. With tighter rules around bobby calves, having a quality beef cross animal is a more attractive and saleable option for dairy farmers. Growth: of the four Euro breeds evaluated: first in weaning weight, first in post weaning weight, first in final slaughter weight at 445 days (that’s around 14 months) while grading first in the Euro breeds USDA Choice grading*…. Even without feedlots, Simmental cross cattle including heifers will finish before a second winter. This has been backed up by results in the NZ Beef and Lamb Progeny Test scheme. More cattle finished before a second winter the better all round.
to their critics: yes, Simmental had a reputation for poor temperament – the first NZ breed to introduce a docility EBV (another measurable and very heritable trait) which gives breeder and buyer more assurance in their selections. As we all know, a quiet animal will finish faster and be more enjoyable to farm than a mad one! Polled: More good news, we are breeding for polled cattle while keeping the attributes that have made Simmental a sought after cross throughout the last 50 years. *Breeds of Beef and Multi-Purpose Cattle – Dr Harlan Ritchie 2009
Carcass: despite all meat being red, there is still a misguided perception that coat colour has some indication of quality/ finishing ability… any butcher will tell you that isn’t true. Fed properly, Simmentals grow meat. And did we mention higher yielding? More meat. Milking ability: The milking ability of Simmental females is outstanding. As a cross bred dam they can feed their calves well. Simmental heifers are also finding their way into milking herds here and holding their own against traditional dairy breeds. Pottawa bullls
Docility: NZ breeders have listened
Simmental calves at yard weaning.

Best ever line up FOR HINGAIA ANGUS
P
reparations are well under way for this year’s Hingaia Angus 2ry Bull sale and the word is that this year’s line-up is the best ever. This is pleasing considering the drought conditions the Northern King Country property has been in since January. Visitors from all over the country are expected to attend the sale at the property on 1 June at the usual time of 4pm with plenty of hospitality to follow! This year’s sale has special significance as it is 100 years since the family settled the original 285 ha. Since then neighbouring land has been added and with a recent
purchase the property is now 600ha with the stud working around a ewe flock and lamb and cattle finishing operation. With the stud entering its 88th year and Andrew Jolly being the 5th generation there is plenty of experience to rely on! With the aim to produce strong functional cattle for the NZ environment Hingaia introduces only proven NZ and occasionally Australian sires. This year with several new sires being represented there will be bulls to fit all budgets and environments.

“We pride ourselves on producing cattle that are farmed naturally in a commercial operation that will then go on to perform for our clients,” Andrew says. Andrew and Richard both say “We, as always expect our cattle to stand up to the harshest of conditions and always welcome visitors and fellow cattlemen to view the stud at any time. We just enjoy talking cattle.”

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022 smile and laugh through their sickness and their sadness. We returned home five weeks later for two days. Friends and family ran the farm for the next few months. Dean’s family made frozen meals and saw to our winter bailage. My mum would come up every day after work to feed the pets and tidy the house for our return. We are forever thankful and humbled by the generosity shown to us by our friends and family and by this amazing little town with a huge heart.
Nick is wearing his Beads of Courage which number about 800 and represent a treatment or event that has happened during his journey.
weekend and most of the holidays, life was great. A phone call to me to bring him up to Waikato Hospital on the 9 October 2020 would forever change all of our lives. We were transferred to Starship Oncology ward the following day, and Nick was diagnosed with Leukaemia with a treatment finish date of February 2023. A special breed of people work in Ward 27, they’re amazing people, doctors and nurses who make it all okay. Children
Long hours on the Xbox are Nick’s only contact with the outside world now largely because of Covid, and the fear of becoming very sick from it. Our family has been in isolation for over eighteen months to keep him safe. But things are getting better, Nick is back driving the tractor, helping on the farm and rabbit shooting, he can’t wait to go pig hunting again with his new pup Lex.
They stand on sound feet and have an excellent temperament. They have a good constitution that will stand the buyer in good stead. Each stud will place a star on their bull so buyers can pick him out from the bulls which will be available on the day. We are pleased to be offering our clients the opportunity to, not only buy a good quality bull, but also to have the added bonus of donating to such a worthy cause and to give a little hope to these little soldiers and their families in a time of so much uncertainty.

The easy decision was made by Black Ridge Angus, along with Nicks Grandparents Brian and Sharon, Uncle Robin and Aunty Tracy, owners of Shian Angus, to donate a bull each to this year’s auction with the proceeds being donated to Starship Children’s Oncology Ward. Nick has picked our old room in the ward “lucky 13” to be our Starship auction bull lot number. These bulls will fit into any breeding program and improve any herd they step into. They are fertile, well framed, attractive cattle with good head and jaw.

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022
Continuing a FAMILY TRADITION By Natasha Richardson
R
otowai Angus is located at Mokauiti, a beautiful valley located in the King Country, half way between Taumarunui and Te Kuiti. This is home to Alan Cave and Natasha Richardson and their four children Charley, Oskar, Austin and Elliot.
The name Rotowai actually originates from Alans grandfather’s Angus and Romney stud and we decided it would be nice to use the name as it has some significance to us. The land is 396 total ha 360 effective ha of easy rolling country to steeper hill country and the soil type is ash. Rainfall each year amounts to 1300-1500mm. Alan grew up on a sheep and beef farm, completed a diesel mechanics apprenticeship and worked as a John Deere mechanic for five years in Pukekohe. He spent three seasons driving in the USA before returning to the family farm in 2008. Natasha grew up on a sheep and beef property and was a dairy farmer for 10 years before meeting Alan and getting back to drystock. Our stud operation is still very small and we began by buying a few cows in from various studs we liked around the country. Unfortunately we aren’t lucky enough to be able to go and buy an entire herd of
stud cows so we’re taking the slow route. We run these alongside our herd of commercial Angus cattle that have 25 years of recording behind them in a handwritten pedigree book, which in later years has moved to Stockbook. They’ve always been tagged at birth and single sire mated so we have a pretty good knowledge of our commercial cows breeding as well as our studs. Alan’s family has always run Angus cows. His grandfather was an Angus stud breeder, and Alan took over his parent’s commercial Angus cow herd. From a farming point of view, they do the job we need our cows to do within the business, they are tough cattle with the cows able to do the hard yards out on the hill yet produce a calf that we can then finish within 24 months and produce a highquality carcass and meat product. They are also versatile from the point of view of being a suitable beef breed to be used over dairy cattle due to their easy calving. We decided to start the stud in 2016 when we got frustrated we couldn’t afford to buy the bulls we liked that would give us the genetic gain we wanted for our commercial herd and we think using genetic tools alongside physical traits is going to be the way to move our beef business forward. It’s just another tool in the tool box, not necessarily the main one as we still like our cattle to have

STUD BULL CATALOGUE 2022 physically pleasing traits and structure and temperament, just another way to gain more information on our cattle and help make purchasing and breeding decisions. So, for now we are our own biggest customer! And we both really enjoy the breeding side of things; it gives us an
interest and a good reason to get off farm. With our studs we add DNA testing and genomics in to give us better accuracy. We calve 140 cows all up consisting of stud, PRAC and commercial cattle. Maternal traits are extremely important to
us as our cows are such an important part of our operation, they need to be quiet, wean a good calf every year from 2yrs of age without assistance, whilst doing the hard yards at the same time. We want to produce good genuine quiet bulls for the commercial farmers like ourselves that will add value to their business. In the future we plan to continue to grow our stud herd, but also improve the quality of the cattle we are producing so it could be a long process! We would like

to be able to put a smaller number of high-quality bulls forward rather than large numbers. This year we have a hand full of 2 yr olds by Ashland and Rainmaker that we used ourselves as yearlings and around 30 yearlings which are a mixture of stud, PRAC and commercial bulls by Blackloch, Rainmaker, Heatherdell, Hallmark and Waitewheta sires.
