Summer Guide Hawke’s Bay/East Coast 2021/2022
Hawke’s Bay & the East Coast Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast is full of exciting opportunities to see and do as much, or as little, as you choose and all in a beautiful, warm and sunny climate. We hope to entice you to visit Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast this summer – our little piece of sunny paradise. The Bay, as it’s known locally, literally does have it all from an equable, Mediterranean climate that’s so important for our food and wine industry, to natural beauty that includes ranges, peaks, river valleys to vineyards, orchards and beautiful beaches. And with the mild climate come activities galore. There’s always something going on in summer, autumn, winter and spring. There’s vibrancy, yet none of the stress associated with larger towns and cities. Weekends seem longer and more enjoyable as people get out and about either on foot, cycling, walking or generally enjoying the outdoor life. For those on holiday there’s a relaxing ambience and friendly locals. There’s also a vibrant café culture for those who enjoy a decent coffee and a lazy brunch.
There’s no shortage of art, culture and theatre either. Throughout the Bay are beautiful public art works, galleries and theatres. Toi Toi, Hawke’s Bay’s Arts and Events Centre, in Hastings has recently re-opened after being refurbished and offers a beautiful auditorium and a range of events, concerts and performances. MTG is based in Napier and is home to an award winning museum, theatre and gallery. It’s also home of the region’s taonga and other treasures. There are changing exhibitions of art, culture and social history. Hawke’s Bay and the East Coast is wellknown as a food and wine destination, holiday destination and of course, the Napier Art Deco celebrations in mid-February add an exciting touch of festivity. With overseas travel still off the agenda why not come and explore the Bay? You’re sure to find a warm welcome. Cover photo credit: Brian Culy

M
ission Estate Winery is an iconic New Zealand landmark, established in the Hawke’s Bay 171 years ago; the longest standing producer of world-class wines in New Zealand. The exquisite building, ‘La Grande Maison’ which is every bit as ‘grand’ as it sounds, houses the cellar door and adjoining fine-dining restaurant. One of Napier’s most memorable dining experiences, the restaurant is a favourite amongst locals and a mustvisit on anyone’s itinerary heading to the region. An afternoon at Mission is a unique and unforgettable experience with one of the best views in Napier, complemented with delicious food and

Mission restaurant has recently undergone an extensive renovation with a fresh, new look in keeping with Mission’s timeless elegance. The contemporary new interior and exciting new menu with a focus on local produce by Mission executive chef, Ricky Littleton elevates the dining experience. A stylish new bar area and fireplace flows out onto an extended garden patio for summertime enjoyment. Local libations Discover the inspiring selection of wines, spirits and artisan brews produced in the Bay. Hawke’s Bay is home to some 76 wineries, about 200 vineyards and 38 cellar doors which make it New Zealand’s second largest wine producer and the largest premium red wine producing region in the country. The Hawke’s Bay climate is maritime and similar to Bordeaux in France. After the establishment of the Mission Vineyard in 1851, shortly followed by nearby Church Road Winery, other growers were attracted to the area and now there’s
a network of vineyards growing varieties that include Cabernet Merlot, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc. Organised tours, by vehicle or bicycle, are available or you can plan your own itinerary with help from food and wine maps available on the Hawke’s Bay Wine website. Hawke’s Bay also produces a large quantity of New Zealand’s apples so it’s no surprise that it has become a centre of excellence for

There are several beer and cider gardens throughout the region where tasting trays are available, or sample some at selected cafés and restaurants. Brave Brewing in Hastings has a taproom and eatery. Here patrons can sup on award winning brews and buy beer to take home. Another popular gathering spot for a local beer, eats and music is Common Room, also in Hastings. minutes-drive from Hastings. The owners grow their own hops and have a repurposed 1973 caravan bar and safari dining tent. They offer a seasonal beer range and wood fired pizzas in the hop garden. Hastings Distillers is New Zealand’s first producer of certified organic artisan spirits and liqueurs established by Kate Galloway and David Ramonteu in 2019. Hastings Distillers’ Albertine gin took top spot in the Contemporary Gin category at the IWSC in 2020: a competition rewarding excellence in drinks worldwide. The National Distillery Company is based in the historic art nouveau 1930’s landmark building (the former National Tobacco Building) in Ahuriri. Here they craft the finest selection of copper distilled New Zealand gins, vodkas, rums and whiskies available. Also in Ahuriri is the Urban Winery, home to Tony Bish wines, a cellar door and wine bar.

Seasonal, fresh and delicious and there’s plenty more to suit all palates. Hastings is coming on in leaps and bounds with a newish Italian restaurant, the Sazio Pasta Bar in Heretaunga Street East, which offers gorgeous meals with pasta freshly made daily and cooked to order. Just across the road is Fun Buns which brings the best of Asian street food together with Hawke’s Bay local and seasonal produce. There are many bistro’s, cafés and restaurants throughout the district offering reasonably priced,
quality meals and family friendly facilities, often with special kids’ menus. There is also an excellent selection of coffee shops for those who can’t go too far without their daily ‘fix.’ There are several café’s producing vegan, paleo and organic food and a good selection catering to those who are gluten intolerant. Fairly new on the scene is The Figgery Café in Havelock North operated by Te Mata Figs. Figs feature on the menu and clients can buy the boutique fig products. In Napier Hapi is popular with those seeking organic, gluten free, dairy-free, raw plant-based and paleo friendly food.

Dining out is a major pastime in Hawke’s Bay. There can be few experiences more delightful than dining outdoors on a summer’s day admiring the beautiful views while enjoying some of the finest food Hawke’s Bay has to offer. Another key selling point about Hawke’s Bay is that food produced locally is very fresh and seasonal. Many of Hawke’s Bay’s notable restaurants are associated with vineyards and wineries, for example Mission Estate Winery in Taradale, Craggy Range and Black Barn Bistro in Havelock North. Excellent dining beyond the vines is available throughout the region at establishments such as Pacifica which offers a degustation menu only, Bistronomy, Indigo and Mr D Dining, all in Napier. The Central Fire Station in Napier won several categories in this
year’s Hawke’s Bay Hospitality Awards and was the Supreme Establishment winner. St George’s Restaurant and Mangapapa, both not far from Havelock North, offer fine dining with the emphasis on fresh, home grown produce. Another fine dining establishment is Malo in Havelock North situated within Porters Boutique Hotel which offers locally sourced, seasonal produce much from their own garden. There’s a huge selection of dining options in Havelock North including the people’s choice Hospitality Awards winner Piku, Hawke’s Bay’s only Izakaya style Japanese Restaurant and Cocktail Bar. Neapolitan pizzas are typically 10-12” in diameter. At Alessandro’s we make a rustic 12”, which we think is the perfect size for one hungry person, or for two people wanting a snack! The key to a good Neapolitan pizza is simplicity, and for that reason we usually just stick to a few top-quality ingredients on our pizzas. Neapolitan pizza should have a thin layer of crispness to the crust, with an interior that is moist and cloud-like with good, stretchy chew, and plenty of flavour. You want a leopard-spotted look, with many dark spots surrounded by paler dough. True Neapolitan pizzas are not stiff- you can’t easily pick them up as a slice, so you may need to fold

Quality, local produce Hawke’s Bay is home to more than its fair share of talented artisans. Throughout the Bay there are people dedicated to creating traditional, quality foodstuffs thanks to the excellent growing conditions for fruit, vegetables, vines and produce in general. As the region’s reputation for fresh, quality produce grows so too does the number of people setting up business providing quality goods such as handmade chocolates, French bread and pastries, cow and sheep cheese, olives and so on.
Origin Earth cheese
For those who prefer to explore the region personally there’s a good choice of products on offer such as figs which are grown in Havelock North and are processed into a fabulous range of jams, chutneys and salami di fichi. Olive products are available at several outlets and there’s an excellent range of oils, drizzles, relishes and antipasto treats. There are several olive oil producers, many award winners, producing fine oil, including extra virgin. While in Havelock North sample a selection of Arataki’s finest honeys and choose your favourite from clover, rata, rewarewa, manuka, and many others, all available at the Arataki Visitor Centre. Hohepa’s award-winning cheeses are equal parts
creamy and deep with flavour and character, so it’s worth sampling a few varieties at their onsite shop and select your favourites. Hohepa is on the way to Napier just past Clive on SH51. The Hawke’s Bay Farmers Market in Hastings offers a relaxed atmosphere, not unlike a traditional village market. Shoppers can browse at their leisure, indulge in breakfast or a sweet treat, listen to live music, and talk to the growers of seasonal fruits, vegetables and seasonal products. Sample and buy fresh, farm picked produce such as capsicum, chillies, limes, figs, mushrooms and herbs along with all sorts of vegetables, fruits and nuts. There’s a great range of jams, preserves, freshly baked breads and pastries along with dressings, vinaigrettes, olives and olive oil. There’s organic meat, bacon, sausages, venison small goods and even
duck eggs to be tasted. That’s the great thing about the market as most products can be sampled before buying. There’s also a similar but smaller market, the Napier Urban Market on Saturday at Clive Square. The region is also brimming with stalls selling the freshest of fresh Hawke’s Bay seasonal produce such as strawberries, blueberries, cherries, boysenberries, stone fruit and summer fruit. Fresh fruit smoothies and ice-creams are just the thing to cool down in the hot summer. Farm gate taste and buy opportunities include honey, blueberries, mushrooms, farm shops, and strawberry farms.

With spectacular white sand beaches, secluded bush walks, natural saltwater hot pools, rail biking and one of the best small museums in the country, Wairoa and its surrounding areas are a treasure trove waiting to be discovered. Whether you’re travelling north from Napier or south from Gisborne, the journey is a beautiful one that winds through untouched native bush along the Pacific Coast Highway. Stop a while in Wairoa and you may be pleasantly surprised at what’s on offer. Stay a while and stock up on supplies before heading off to explore the natural beauty of the district. Pop into the iconic Oslers Bakery and Café for lunch – locals swear by the mince and cheese pies here. There are several interesting shops to browse too. The Wairoa River runs through the town with opportunities for plenty of water sports. Take a stroll down the stunning Wairoa River Walkway and discover some of this quaint town’s history. Nearby is Portland

Explore the District Heritage Museum which in the old Union Bank of Australia building presents historical displays related to the Maori and European history of the Wairoa area and surrounding districts. Heading north on SH2 turn right to Māhia Peninsula where you’ll find Māhia Beach - a family-friendly classic. Nearby Mahanga offers excellent surf when the conditions are right, while a drive along Māhia East Coast Road offers up gorgeous rock pools for exploring and swimming in. One of the only spots on the East Coast where you can see the sun set into the water, Mokotahi Hill is striking headland at the centre of the Māhia Beach township and an easy walk along a well maintained pathway. The springs produce 250,000 litres a day of hot ancient sea water. Known for its therapeutic values, the water is piped to a series of public and private hot pools.
It is definitely worth taking a walk on any of the various walks in the Morere Scenic Reserve, from 10-minute walks up to three hours. Especially famous for its nikau palms, the dense virgin rain forest is home to a wide range of native birds. From Gisborne it’s a pleasant drive of about 50 minutes, with views of the sea and countryside to Tolaga Bay, where what’s believed to be the longest wharf of its type in the Southern hemisphere is situated. It is a heritage New Zealand site and at 600 metres long it takes a while to walk the length and back. The end of the wharf is popular with fishers and in the summer kids jump down into the clear blue water-it’s quite a way!

Got an old tyre handy that needs a new lease on life? Turn it into a super speedy seat for the kids to zip down the Rere Rock Slide. A popular local adrenaline rush that won’t cost a cent, the natural slide is about 45 minutes from Gisborne city centre on Wharekopae Road. It’s also worth catching your breath afterwards beside the Rere Falls themselves; a postcard-perfect rock formation and waterfall.
Enjoy the 22km drive from Te Araroa to the historic landmark, then the walk up 700 steps or so to stretch those legs. The teens in your group will then appreciate the Instagram opportunities that the lighthouse offers and the younger ones will love the perilous tale behind how it was built.

Te Whare Taonga o te Tairāwhiti | Tairāwhiti Museum The exhibition Tū te Whaihanga: a recognition of creative genius, has now been extended until May 2022. Tūte Whaihanga displays treasured Māori artefacts that left Aotearoa New Zealand 251 years ago on HMS Endeavour. They returned home to Tairāwhiti in October 2019, on the 250th anniversary of the first onshore encounters between the crew of the Endeavour and tangata whenua in Tūranganui-a-Kiwa Gisborne. The collection of taonga are on loan from five museums in England and one in Germany. They include eight painted hoe paddles, traded at sea off Whareongaonga (south of Tū ranganui-a-Kiwa) on October 12, 1769, and Te Poupou o Hinematioro from her whare on Te Pourewa Island on October 28, 1769. Other taonga include
rākau (weapons), kākahu (cloaks), tātua (belts), whakairo (carvings) and adornments. The exhibition was originally scheduled to run for one year but due to the impact of Covid-19, the exhibition has been extended, giving more people a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to see these taonga at home in New Zealand, though they do need to come to Tairāwhiti to see them as they will not be exhibited anywhere else in New Zealand. Museum Director Eloise Wallace says that there have been plenty of visitors over the year and for many seeing the exhibition has been quite an emotional experience. “People are really amazed to be
able to see the creativity and ingenuity of taonga that were crafted over 250 years ago,” she said. The development of Tū te Whaihanga was led by Hei Kanohi Ora Governance Group which comprises of Tūranganui-a-Kiwa mana whenua and Te Aitanga a Hauiti and was developed in partnership with Tairāwhiti Museum. Huia Pihema, Chairperson of Hei Kanohi Ora, says “Tūranganui a Kiwa and Te Aitanga a Hauiti iwi are elated that our taonga will remain with their people, on their whenua for a little longer yet.”
“Tu¯ Te Whaihanga has and will continue to acknowledge, honour and commemorate the creative genius of our tipuna of 250 years ago and longer. The mauri of these taonga have been revitalised and reinvigorated as the multitude of descendants have bestowed upon these precious taonga their own ihi, wehi, mauri and aroha.” Nick Tupara, Hei Kanohi Ora Governance Group member. The exhibition runs until the end of May 2020. Entry to local residents and children 12 and under is free. For others there is a $5 entry fee.
Now extended until May 2022 The return of taonga to Taira-whiti after 250 years
