ThisyearweheldawhānauMatarikicelebrationattheendofTerm2.Itwasgreattojointogetherwithwhānauforarangeofmahi toiactivities. Withinschool,ourstudentshaveallthesameopportunitiesasstudentsinmainstreamschools,plusmanymore.Individualised programmesoflearningensureanybarrierstolearningareremovedsothattheycanachievesuccessattheirownlevel.

EveryMondayafternoonandFridaymorningduringWinter, thestudentsfromRoom 4and 5enjoyedlearningtheskills associatedwiththesesports.Theseskillswereusedduring theSaturdayJABrugbygameswherebothteamsperformed admirably.Welookforwardto ourRugby Teamswearingour newUniformsnextseason.Thesewerepurchasedfroma grantwe receivedfromEasternCentralCommunityTrust.
Thisyearwasthefirst yearMatarikiwascelebratedasa nationalholiday.Wecelebratedatschoolwithvariousfun activitiesforthechildren.ThechildrenmadeKawaKawa balmwithWhãea Wendy,theysungwaiatawithMãtuaCon andeverychildpainted arockforourMatarikigarden.Mrs TaylorplayedMaoristickgames -T t tõrea,thatconsists oftherhythmicthrowingandcatchingofsticks(TeRakau) frompersontoperson.Larneytaughtthetamariki anew gamecalledT Uru.Thisis atraditionaltãkaro(game)that encouragesandcelebratescloseconnectionsandties betweenWhãnau,Hapu,andIwi.Thebenefitsofthistãkaro areimprovementstohand/eyecoordination,improved balance,whanaungatanga(teamwork),strategicthinking andspatialawareness.MissJenkinsbroughtoutthecreative elementwheretamarikicelebratedMatarikibypaintingand decorating astaroftheirinterest.
We participatedintheEasternZoneCrossCountryeventwith NuhakaSchooland Te MahiaSchool.Duetotheweatherwe hadtopostponeoureventbutwereabletojointheothersat Nuhakafor afunday.
Manyofourstudentswentonto representtheiragegroup inthe WairoaDistrictSchoolsCrossCountryEventatOhuka School.
OurtwoseniorclassesheldanIn-schoolEPRO8Challenge inpreparationforthe WairoaDistrictSchools’challengelater inNovember.Theseeventsaredesignedtopromotescience, engineeringandproblemsolving.Thechildrenhadfuncreating structurestocompletechallenges.
On Wednesdaythe16thofNovember,pupilsandstaffcaught 2busestoStTheresetocelebratetheFeastDayofStTherese (LittleFlower)with aMass.StThereseofLisieux(forwhom theChurchisnamedafter)was aFrenchCarmaliteNunwho wasknownastheLittleFlowerofJesus.SheisthePatron Saintofmissions,floristsandofthesick.Theschoolenjoyed participatingintheMass,ledbyFatherandpreparedbyour Tawhiti -a-MaruWhãnau.Itwasalsogreattobebackatour Marae.
We finishedoffourMatarikiweekwith
tookthe Voyagersprogramme.Thestudentsdiscoveredhow earlyvoyagersnavigatedtheirwayoverthePacificOceanto arriveattheseshoresandtheknowledgeandtechnologies theyusedtomaketheepicjourney.Weexploredwakahourua relatedtaongafromthemuseum'scollectionsandexamined thedifferenttypesofmaterialsusedintheirconstruction. Thiswasfollowedbytimeinourplanetariumfindingthe constellationsthatnavigatorsusedinthepastandstilluse todaytoguidetheiroceanjourneys.Thestudentswereable towalkinsideaninflatabledometoseetheconstellationsthat thenavigatorsusedinthepast.Itwasanengagingexperience.
Thisyear WairoaNetballformed,andnetballwasheldona Saturdaymorning. We onlyhadoneteamthisyearbutitwas greattoseethe WairoaNetballcourtscomealiveagainon Saturdaymornings.Thisbroughtinclubteams,thefirsttimein manyyears.Itallowedourschoolagedchildrentowatchand learnfromwhãnauandrangatahi.Itwasgreattohave awhole seasonthisyearwithoutinterruptions.
Ourchildrenwouldnotbeabletoparticipateinsportingevents outsideoftheschooldayifitwasn’tforparentvolunteersto coachandsupervise. We arethankfulfortheirtimeandskills theysharewithallourtamariki.

We areexcitedaboutlearninghereatStJoseph’sSchoolin Wairoanextyearaswehave alotofbuildingworkscheduled forearlyintheyear.Weare havingtwo rooms refurbished intocreativelearningspaces.Onewillhave akitchenforthe teachingoffoodtechnologyforour Year 7and 8students. The2022yearstartedwithEbbettPark SchooloperatingunderourCOVIDprotection Framework–startingtheyearinRED.Thetraffic lightsystemmeantrestrictionswereputinto placewiththeaimofkeepingeveryonesafe.It wouldbefairtosaythatweareincrediblyproud ofourtamarikiandcommunityforthesupport theygaveusduringsuchchallengingtimesand theresilienceeveryonedemonstratedaround thechangetowardsanewnormal.
Ourprincipal,KateMedlicott,startedtheyear withatermsabbatical.Shededicatedher termtodevelopingSeesawasanassessment, planningandreportingtoolwiththeaimthat reportingtowhanauwouldbecomeongoing andlivingthroughouttheyear,keepingwhanau informedaboutlearning,achievementtowards theNewZealandCurriculumandnextlearning steps.Asaresult,excitingandprogressive changescanbeexpectedtobeseenaroundhow wereporttowhanaubeginning2023.
DuringKate’ssabbatical,EPSwasleftinthe verycapablehandsofDeputyprincipal,Hamish Dufty.Hisleadershipisseamless,andthis ensuredthatEPScontinuedtorunefficiently andeffectivelyduringterm1.Heledthroughthe challengeofCOVID,andteacherabsencesand Kateisverygratefulforhisworkanddedication –theymakeagreatteam.
AstheyearprogressedlifemovedfromRedto OrangeandtheneventuallyintoGreenandthen outofthetrafficlightstructurealtogether–life slowlyseemedtobemovingbacktonormal.
Despitethechallengeswehaveseenthemost ‘SchoolLegends’sincebeginningin2015.School legendsaretamarikiwhohavebeenawardedall threevaluesbands–Excellence,PrideandSpirit. Thesetamarikiareacknowledgedbyreceiving their‘legends’band,givenaschoolcapand theirphotoisplacedonthe‘Treethatlegends aremadefrom’.Thisisalevelofachievement thatanystudentshouldbeproudof.
Matarikicelebrationswereahighlightthisyear. Wehadaweekofactivitiesacrosstheschool whichfinishedwithsomeofourseniorssleeping overatschoolsothattheycouldlightthefire andlaytheHangi.Itwasagreatexperience andafuneveningfollowedbyaVERYearly morning.Wewereabletocompletetheweek withawonderfulMatarikishowcase,kapahaka performanceandsharingHangiwithourschool community.
EarlyMayEbbettParkSchoolandmembers oftheschoolcommunitywererecognisedfor theirworkaroundNewZealandSignLanguage. TinaBrightwell(aparent)wasawardedMāori Champion(awardedtoanindividual(or organisation)promotingNZSLlearningamong tereoMāoriusers.NoraMoana(acommunicator andstaffmember)wasawardedNZSLLocal Champion(recognisinganindividual’s outstandingcontributiontopromote,maintain andcelebrateNZSLintheirlocalregion).Ebbett ParkSchoolwasnamedNZSLSCHOOLfor2022. Thisisanawardthatrecognisesaschoolthat showscommitmenttoNZSLbypromotingitin thecurriculum.Wecontinuetobeextremely proudofourresponsivepracticetoourdeaf and/orhardofhearinglearners.
Interm3ofthisyear,wetooktheplungeand
createda‘BoysOnlyClassroom’andwhat asuccessithasbeen.Theboysinthisroom havebeeninvolvedintheboxingprogramme withGiantsGym,theyhavecollectedoldand brokenscootersandspenttimeworkingonthe mechanicsandtidyingthemupsothatthey nowwork.Thefeedbackfromwhanauhasbeen nothingbutpositiveanditisaconceptthatwe believehaseducationalvaluesowillcontinue in2023.
Whiletheyearprogressedsodidourplanning forthefuture.AllEPSstakeholdershave playedapartinthebuildingandenvironment developmentsthisyearandasaresultweare FINALLYseeingtheseplansandprojectscoming tolife.SincethebeginningofNovember,we haveseenworkbeginonfourprojects:
1.ReplacementofthePMCbuildings:Room 9and10.Thesebuildingsarenotpermanent buildingsandarewellpasttheir‘usebydate’. StartinginNovembertwonewclassroomswill bebuiltintheareaoftheoldplayground.
2.Newplaygroundwillbeestablishedinthe vicinityoftheoldroom9and10classroom space.Thisisreinstatingthesenior playgroundthathasbeenoutofcommission allyear.
3.UpgradeofoldboilerroomandblockA: Rms1-4.Theboilerroomhasbeen decommissionedformanyyearsnowandis aspacethatisnotused.Thiswillbedesigned intoajointofficefortheprincipalandDP.The currentprincipalofficewillbecomeameeting spaceforallandanymeetingsthatneedthe space.Thebathroomsbetweenroom2and3 arebeingmadeintobreakoutspacesandthe toiletblockattheendofroom4reconfigured tohaveseparatedboy/girlbathroomspaces accessiblefromtheplayground.
4.BikeTrackField:Onceallbuildingwork hasbeencompletedabrandnewbiketrack willbeestablishedaroundthefieldarea. Thiswillallow‘BikesInSchools’tobecome aprogrammeatEPSandourtamarikiwill havegreaterspacetoridetheirscooters.The creativityofthestaffofEbbettParksurpassed expectations–thedevelopmentofonline learningandvirtualclassroomsstrengthened theengagementoflearnersandtheirwhanau.
