Wereachthistimeoftheyearwithenthusiasmasthisannual projectrollsaround.Hawke’sBayToday,aspartoftheNew ZealandHeraldnetwork,supportsandencouragesschools inthisregiontotakeadvantageofthisrareopportunityto celebratetheirachievementsandtakestockofthemanygoals reachedbystudentsandstaffthroughouttheacademicyear.
Thispublicationhelpsourschoolstell theirstoriesandgivesreadersthe opportunitytolearnaboutthewider community,theexceptionalchildren,and theirteachers,whorepresentourfuture. Thisyearhasbeenmoresettledthanthe lastcoupleofyearsalthoughtherearestill someongoingimpactsrelatedtoCyclone Gabrielle.Weshouldbeproudofthe waychildren,theirteachers,caregivers, andfamiliescopedwithGabrielleandits aftereffects.Onthesepagesyou’lllearn aboutwhatourschoolshaveachieved thisyeargiventhatmostarebackto normal.
Schoolthesedaysismuchmore thanreading,writingandmathematics. Curriculumsaredesignedtoencourage excellence,innovation,inquiryand curiosityalongwithdiversity,equityand integrity.Instillingsuchvaluesand,at thesametime,havingchildrenlearnto expressthemselves,developempathy andmakeethicaldecisions,isabigask. Ultimatelychildrenarelearningtodevelop thecompetenciestheywillneedforstudy, workandlifelonglearningsotheywillgo ontorealisetheirfullpotential. Outdoorlearningisalargepartofthe completelearningexperiencewhether atthebeach,atcamp,crosscountry
orontheocean.Activeexplorationis encouragedandthere’splentyoffun incorporatedintothecurriculum,making itmuchmoreattractiveforyoungpeople toaccept.Activitiesthesedaysinclude canoepolo,mathletics,triathlon,hip hop,camps,martialartsandarangeof learninginactionactivities.Interactive technologycontinuestosupportlearning andwithchildrenhappilyaccepting technologyasalearningresourceit opensupevengreateravenuesfor structuredlearningandfun. There’salsoagreatfocusondeveloping meaningful,respectfulandcaring relationshipsandtakingresponsibility forself.Communicationskills,once largelyignored,arepartandparcelofa child’slifefromthetimetheystartearly childhoodeducationandthroughouttheir schoollife.

2024wasthefirstyearinawhilethat wasn’tovershadowedbyeitherCovidor severeweather.Flexibilityisourmiddle namesowecanrollwithwhatevercomes ourway,butwedidenjoystartingtheyear inrelativecalmwithamihiwhakatauinthe hallinlinewithHastingsIntermediatekawa, towelcomeournewstudents,staffandtheir whānau.
Term1isalwaysasignificanttransition-for ourY7studentswhoareleavingbehind6 yearsinaprimaryschoolwheretheyhave feltnurturedandalsorisentotheheightsof leadershipandseniority,fortheirwhānauwho aregraduallybecomingaccustomedtotheir children’sincreasingneedforindependence andforourY8swhoaresteppingintotherole oftuakanatotheY7teina.OurTerm1theme ofKowaiau/Kowaimātouallowedusto considerhowwebecomeaschoolwhānau undertheumbrellaofourManaakitanga values-noeasyfeatwhenourstudents comefrom44differentschoolsandembrace over20ethnicbackgrounds.Weareproud ofandcelebratethediversityofourstaff andstudents-itbringsmuchcolourtoour schoolcommunity,allowingourstudents todeveloptoleranceandacceptanceof othersandcelebrateavarietyofcultures. Onthesportingfront,wecateredonceagain toaspiringathletesaswellastothosewho simplyenjoyphysicalactivity,camaraderie andparticipation.OurspecialistPEteacher andSportsCoordinatorofferedSport Scienceasanoptiontoallourstudents andoversawalloursportingeventsfrom theCrosscountryfunrunandtheWeetbix TryathlontothecompetitiveAIMSgamesand ToiWhakaihuwaka-andeverythingelsein between-Super6andothercompetitions inVolleyball,Basketball,Rugby,Netball, Swimming,CanoeandWaterPoloandKi-orahi,aswellastheannualTeApitiExchange -averitablesmorgasbordofchoice!Once
again,wewerewellrepresentedinthe HastingsEastRossShieldandWakeley competitions.
WeweresuperbusyontheArtsfront thankstoourMusicSpecialist,TimDanes. Throughouttheyear,weshowcasedour students’talentsateventssuchasHIShas Talent,UkuleleFestival,DanceFestival,Kids’ Sing,Bandquest,WearableArtsandBattleof theBay.Term2wasonceagainasignificant highlightfor90studentswhoperformedat ToitoiinShowquestwherewewereawarded secondplaceinHawkesBayandbestuseof props.Abigshout-outtoMrDanesandRuss fromRezpectDanceAcademyfortheextra choreographingoverandaboveourweekly HipHopclasses.
Ontheacademicside,wewerewell representedacrosstheyearattheKids’Lit Quiz,Mathletics,Chess,ScienceRoadshow andoneofourtwoRoboticsteamswona regionaltrophywhichqualifiedthemforthe NationalsunderthetutelageofourBoard PresidingMember,NickRichards.
Term3isabusyoneinanIntermediate calendar!Visitstoandfromourcontributing schoolsandOpenEveningwereveryspecial eventsintowhichweputalotofplanningas theyarebothopportunitiesforourcurrent studentstodemonstrateleadershipandour schoolvaluesofManaakitangaANDimportant occasionstowelcomeournewstudentsand allayanxieties.WeenjoyedvisitingHastings Central,EbbettPark,Mahora,Parkvale,Mayfair, FrimleyandRaurekaSchools.
WewerefortunatetoqualifyforCyclone RemediationworkonourAdminbuildingand afterayearandaterm,wehavefarewelled thescaffoldingandtentthatbothembraced andprotectedus.Thistimenextyear,wehope tohavecompletedourartificialturfproject.
