Dream themes Let your personality shine through, give special meaning to your day

A

theme for your wedding celebrations will set the foundations for your planning and make that perfect day of yours more memorable for you and your guests. The sky is the limit as far as a theme goes and you probably have numerous ideas already. The most important consideration is that whatever you choose suits you both and is within your budget. Another way to create a theme is to focus on a joint interest such as a sport, horses, scuba diving or cycling. Your theme will dictate the colours you choose for your dresses, the flowers, the grooms outfit, invitations, decorations, transport, and the cake. You could create some drama with bold colours such as black and white or any other favourite colour such as lavender. Popular locally are Art Deco themed weddings complete with authentic gowns, vintage cars and cocktails. Romantic vintage themed vintage weddings offer plenty of scope for the imagination. Select an exquisite dress or design from a previous era and artfully mix with contemporary accessories. The vintage theme can be all inclusive with flowers

from the era, table settings including china and cutlery to match your selected era. Your venue could also be a key to choosing a theme. A beach wedding might call for a casual style of dress with a seashell theme, maybe even tropical flowers followed by cocktails and a seafood barbecue. A wedding set in an orchard or vineyard could suggest a rustic theme with boutique wines or cider followed by an interesting photo shoot. A spring wedding might suggest fresh spring flowers such as daffodils or autumn gives scope for hues of latte and peach. Creating a mood board or scrap book is an effective and fun way of visualising how certain colours and textures would look together. You can add pictures of bouquets, centrepieces, dresses, shoes, accessories and cakes. There’s no shortage of web sites offering fresh inspiration from around the world such as Pinterest. There are also plenty of planning tools on line covering budgets, checklists and much more.

Picture perfect wedding dress Every bride wants to look and feel like a princess

F

inding the perfect wedding gown may take you on a search of many different options, whether you buy, hire, make, borrow, inherit or have it designed. Having a gown designed and made just for you is the ultimate in individuality, but naturally it will cost you more than a readymade dress. Your designer will want to discuss prospective ideas and styles with you, as well as what suits you and your personality. Bringing an illustration, a piece of lace or item of jewellery is helpful for inspiration. Beautiful wedding dresses are available ‘off the peg’ at specialist bridal shops. As well as New Zealand designs, many are imported, so be sure to allow adequate time for the dress you select to be ordered from overseas. With a wonderful range of styles to try before you buy, your dream dress might be right there on the rack! Once chosen your gown can be expertly fitted and altered if necessary. If you are having a dress made choose a pattern and some stunning bridal fabric and let a skilled dressmaker create an exquisite gown for you. With an inspiring selection of silk, satin, lace, brocade and voile, there won’t be another gown exactly like yours, and it won’t be as costly as a designer

dress either. Be sure to choose a reputable dressmaker and always ask to see examples of their work before you decide. Hiring a wedding gown often lets you have that dream dress for less than purchasing it or having it made. Unless you plan to keep your gown as an heirloom, hiring can be an excellent option for the budget conscious bride. Expensive and exquisite dresses are often to be found in the for sale columns, or on the internet. Many have been purchased or imported from overseas and you may discover a genuine designer bridal gown at a fraction of the original cost. You can always have it refitted or altered with beading, add a sparkly belt or trim to your personal taste. Your wedding gown need not be traditional bridal style, colour or price. Look at ball gowns, cocktail outfits and maxi dresses for something just that little bit different. Try summer sales at designer boutiques as well as chain store racks and mail order companies. With style and imagination, a simple dress can always be beautifully and uniquely enhanced with beautiful accessories.

A wedding ring is a symbol of the union of hearts

A

t the engagement stage few couples give thought to the wedding rings, often leaving their purchase until closer the wedding. While this is good for the bank balance you don't want to get into debt with a double purchase of bling. But it does pay to have an idea of the wedding ring you want when shopping for the engagement ring. Think if you will wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring together. If so, they will have to fit well together on the finger and complement each other. Most choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold can also look chic depending on the design. If the setting and style of your engagement ring is very detailed, a plainer wedding ring will offset it better.

Contemporary trends for those looking for unique engagement and wedding rings range from rose gold which flatters all skin tones, to mixed petals, vintage inspired designs, blooming flowers, petals, vines, and cluster styles which adds a feminine touch. Still popular is a simple solitaire – a classic choice. For men two tone rings are popular such as white and yellow gold together. Black zircon rings are also gaining in popularity. Also gaining in popularity is refashioning old jewellery, often family heirlooms, handed down through the generations. It’s often an honour for the bride, sometimes the groom too, when a jeweller is able to craft a stunning contemporary ring using a mother’s or grandmother’s jewellery.

Outstanding wedding locations Hawke’s Bay has an exceptional selection of wedding and reception venues

A

large portion of your budget will be allocated to your reception so the choice of venue needs careful thought. Vineyards are extremely popular for weddings and receptions In Hawke’s Bay. Conveniently close to town our wineries offer indoor and outdoor options, award winning wines and first rate cuisine. Hawke’s Bay also has a great selection of hotels, restaurants, lodges and historic homesteads, alongside art deco buildings, function centres, gardens, orchards, clubs, halls for hire and marquee hire. Think about the closeness of the reception venue to the ceremony, the time of day, type of food and entertainment you’d like. Would you like a formal sit down meal with table service or a buffet which might be more cost effective? Visit your shortlisted reception venues and check what is included in the price per head. The functions team should give advice on how much alcohol to order per head for toasts, meals etc. If you’re on a tight budget ask if you able to take own alcohol. If you are hiring a marquee you may need to factor in hire of wedding

furniture, crockery, glassware, table linen and toilets, lighting, heating, flooring, tables, and chairs. There are local hire companies offering everything from vases to chair covers, candelabras and more. Other factors to consider: • Weekend weddings in high season will need booking very well in advance. Ask about mid-week options which may offer a big cost saving. • Do you want the ceremony at the same place as the reception? This could save time and money. • What accommodation do you need for the bridal party and guests? Do you want a special honeymoon suite? Many venues will include this in the price. Check what hotels and motels are within close range. • Pay attention to detail and find out exactly is included in the price-set up, table costs etc • You should expect to receive a contract that includes everything you have agreed. Payment terms, deposit information and cancellation conditions should also be included.

Practical considerations include the number of guests and whether the cake will be served as dessert. Blooming beautiful Evoking mood and atmosphere, a wedding is not complete without flowers

N

o matter what your budget, flowers are generally an important aspect of your wedding adding atmosphere, creating impact and visual appeal. Traditionally they were a sign of fertility, warded off evil and masked unpleasant odours! There are many considerations when selecting flowers for your big day such as the overall wedding theme, the colour scheme, the season and whether it’s a formal or informal celebration. Styles could range from classic, to wild or contemporary and there’s an amazing range of options when it comes to colour, shape and size. A good florist will help you choose what’s best for you and your budget. You might ask to see a portfolio of their work before settling on a florist you think will do a good job. Word of mouth and personal recommendation is also a good way of picking a floral artist. Talk to friends who have recently married and see who they recommend

and have a good look online for inspiration. After you’ve decided on your theme and colour schemes visit your chosen florist with colour swatches and chat about your many options.

You will need to plan your flowers carefully and order for the bride, bridesmaids’ and flower girls, the groom, best man, attendants, page boys, mothers and

grandmothers, fathers, grandfathers and ushers. Don’t forget the all important floral decorations for the wedding ceremony and reception venue.

Pampering treats The build-up to looking radiant on your wedding day includes treatments to condition your skin, hair and body, ensuring a polished look that will see you picture perfect on your wedding day.

P

rofessional beauty therapists offer a range of relaxing, nurturing face and body treatments. When you are discussing your wedding date arrange a consultation well in advance to help draw up a personalised skin and beauty programme. Get plenty of regular exercise and make fruits, vegetables, lean protein and plenty of water part of your daily life. Discuss your skin type with your cosmetician, get into a regular skin care routine and take advice on their product recommendations. Book makeup and hair stylists for yourself and your bridesmaids well in advance. You may also want to have a trial run to make sure the makeup is perfect. Plan to have eyebrows and eyelashes dyed a couple of weeks before the big day. If you are all feeling the strain of the preparations why not treat yourself and the bridesmaids to a pampering treat such as a facial, massage or spa treatment? There’s no shortage of salons, spas and beauty therapists in Hawke’s Bay. Plan your hairstyle well in advance of your wedding day especially if you are thinking about growing or colouring your hair.

There are many options and aspects to consider such as a hair style that links in with your overall theme and the style of your gown. You could be contemporary, have a vintage or retro style or go bohemian. One of the major decisions is whether to have your hair loose and flowing for a natural look or an updo for a more sophisticated look. Collect clippings of hair styles you think would suit your big day and take them along to your stylist who will be happy to help work out the best style, colour and cut. Arrange for a trial styling to ensure you are happy with the hairstyle you have chosen and make sure you have firm bookings for the wedding day. When you’ve decided on your style take any accessories to your stylist so she can cut your hair to suit to ensure you look perfect on the day. Most brides prefer to have their hair done together with their bridesmaids on the day of the wedding. Many stylists, and makeup artists, will visit you at home or wherever you are preparing for the wedding to save stress.

Wow your guests As weddings become more personalised so too does the after ceremony entertainment

O

ften a couple will have a formal photo shoot after the ceremony and this is the time that guests need to be taken care of. Firstly, make sure in your invitations that guests know you may be away and how long for so they are prepared. While nibbles and drinks is a traditional choice make sure there are plenty of non-alcoholic drinks on hand, somewhere to sit down and some entertainment or activity. Depending on your budget and time allocated for photographs you could have music of some sort or games such as croquet, mini golf or a treasure hunt. It may be possible to arrange a

wine tasting session, especially if the reception is being held at a local winery. Another fun activity is hiring a photo booth which can be hilarious, especially as the evening goes by and guests become less inhibited. It’s a good opportunity to be really silly, maybe dress up or put on a disguise and at the same time the couple can have a lasting reminder of the reception. There are all sorts of photo booths to choose from ranging from vintage style to classic old-style booths that use digital technology. Some also have facilities to print on site and others offer photo album packages and online galleries.

Father of the bride Giving a daughter away is a very emotional time for a father

H

e’s protected you, cared for you and was the first and probably the most influential man in your life…. until now that is. Fathers and daughters do have a very special relationship and whilst it is a proud moment for both your parents it can also be tinged with great sadness as your wedding day is the end of an era for you all. The phrase ‘Giving away the bride’ is an old-fashioned one that goes back to the days when a woman was the property of her father until ‘given away.’ While some may honour the tradition there’s also many who will opt for more contemporary wording. Walking a daughter down the aisle is still very traditional, regardless of the spoken words, and it’s an important moment in a father’s life. Often dad will

be able to catch a glimpse of daughter when she’s dressed and ready to travel to the ceremony. This can also be a very proud, yet emotional moment. Gone are the days when the parents of the bride paid for everything as today costs are generally split or the bride and groom may fund themselves. But there is still one thing the father of the bride usually does and that is to give a speech during the reception. This could be full of memories, feelings and stories about when she was a little, probably naughty girl or rebellious teenager. There may well be a few laughs too before he sums up and thanks everyone for attending and proposes a toast to the bride and groom. In keeping with tradition the bride and groom have a first dance then the bride will go onto a dance with her father.

Weddings Hawke’s Bay 2016 | 23

Memorable music Your choice of music for your wedding day will create great memories

T

he music for your ceremony should express love and commitment which could mean a live performance of a favourite song or a CD, traditional hymns, or for traditionalists a wedding march. If you have chosen a church wedding options include an organist, string quartet or a solo singer or musician. For the reception music, if you are hiring a DJ or a band, when your guests RSVP, ask them to name their favourite song and add it to the playlist. You may choose to make your own digital compilation to play during the reception. Early on at the reception you’ll want to talk to people so you don’t want it too obtrusive or noisy to begin with. You can party after the meal and first dance.

The bride and groom traditionally have the first dance together and the music is always a song that has a special significance for the couple. Make sure you can dance to the music you have chosen-a practice might be a good idea. After the first dance the bride and groom take other partners: the bride with her father, father-in-law, best man and the groom with his mother, motherin-law and bridesmaids then the other guests take to the dance floor. Popular first dance music includes Thinking out Loud, Ed Sheeran; All of Me, John Legend; A Thousand Years, Christina Perri; Ho Hey, The Lumineers; How long will I love you, Ellie Goulding; I’m Yours, Jason Mraz; Better Together, Jack Johnson; Marry you, Bruno Mars; Stay with Me, Sam Smith.

ots of brides start by telling me they aren’t photogenic. But my response is always the same; when have you ever been photographed a thousand times in a day, by an experienced professional, while you’re wearing a designer gown with perfect hair and makeup? You are going to look amazing, end of story. But finding the right person to capture that for you

is an important decision and it’s worth considering a few key things before booking a photographer or videographer. 1. Fall in love with their work. The best photographer is one whose work gives you an instant emotional reaction. Fall in love with their style in the same way you fall in love with your dress.

Happy Days Event and Marquee Hire have it all; from our large marquees right down to the knives and forks. We can provide you with a one stop shop to outfit your party needs. So if you’re looking for Wedding Hire, Party Hire or just our Marquee Hire we can help, our friendly staff are experienced with layouts and functions and can make it easy for you to plan your big event.

Weddings Hawke’s Bay 2016 | 25 2. Look at lots of photos! Professional photographers and videographers will have a website (not just a Facebook page) and won’t just show you a ‘Greatest Hits’ collection but a full wedding day (preferably at your venue). Make sure the work you are shown comes from real weddings, with all the pressures that come with a fastpaced wedding day. 3. You get what you pay for. In Hawke’s Bay there is a huge variation in price for wedding photography and video - some charge under a thousand dollars, some over $4,000. While time spent on the day and items included in the package contributes to the quote,

mostly you’re paying for the experience, reputation and skill of the person behind the lens. A top photographer can make a low-budget wedding look incredible but an inexperienced one can make even the most lavish one look disappointing. 4. Seek out word on the street. Ask friends and other wedding suppliers to recommend a photographer or videographer, or give you feedback on those you are considering. 5. Book early Photographers and videographers are usually the next thing booked after the venue. It’s not uncommon for good ones to be booked more than a year in advance.

Well suited Today’s grooms are keen to create a look that complements the bride’s style while suiting their own personality

T

hese days most grooms are not afraid to express their own style and it seems that anything goes from suits and ties to shorts and jandals although it does appear that here in the Bay men are tending to more traditional attire. Much depends, of course, on the theme of the wedding, the venue and the degree of formality. Brides are usually consulted to ensure the continuity of the wedding theme, but grooms should try a variety of styles to see which suits their height and body shape best. Those of medium height and build can wear almost any style, but for other body shapes, the cut, style, length and fit should all be considered. The groom usually wears something to distinguish him from his best man and groomsmen. They might wear the same suits but different coloured shirts or perhaps a differently styled jacket.

Small touches make all the difference such as waistcoats, coordinated ties, pocket squares, matching socks or special cufflinks, which work together to blend with the tone of the ceremony and overall colour scheme. Socks are a great way for the men to quietly show their individuality. Hire, buy or borrow, whatever suit style you choose be sure it’s design, fabric and fit will flatter you and that it’s appropriate for the season and the occasion. Ensure it’s cleaned, pressed and tailored for ideal length too! There’s a choice of off the rack suits which can be tailored to fit or made to measure suits. Still popular locally are morning suits, blue and charcoal lounge suits. For those wanting to be a little more casual trousers and a waistcoat are a good option. Occasionally those not used to ‘dressing up’ might go for a pair of moleskins and handcrafted leather boots. Let’s not forget the hair which will need styling several weeks ahead of

the wedding to give it time to settle for the photographs. Extra care with the cut and conditioning will ensure

all the men look their best. A manicure will have his hands looking good for the photos.

Make an entrance The theme, style or atmosphere of a wedding is often reflected in the transport chosen for the bride and grooms arrival

Y

ou might want to make your entrance or exit in unique style, but check out availability and practicality when making your choice of wedding vehicle. Classic or vintage cars - these tend to be booked up well in advance so act quickly once you’ve decided on the date for the wedding. Double-decker bus or coach - a bus, a fun way to get around, can also transport your wedding guests, ensuring they find their way to the ceremony and reception and that they are delivered safely back to their accommodation.

Boat - if you’re going near waterways, arriving by boat could be just the ticket. Horse and carriage or horseback - for a truly romantic start to your ceremony nothing can beat arriving in a horsedrawn carriage. Helicopter - what about a chopper for serious thrills and a grand entrance? If there’s a distance to travel it could also be quite practical. Two wheelers- for something even less conventional, you might consider a vintage motorbike and sidecar or a tandem bike. Whatever type of transport you choose, you will still want comfort, punctuality and reliability.

For Award Winning Professional Service

A time of peaceful harmony

W

hether your most romantic holiday ever is a tropical island getaway with your own secluded beach, a country lodge or hideaway cottage, your honeymoon is a private celebration of your new life together. It’s a chance to relax, unwind and chill out after what’s likely to have been a frantic time in the lead up to the wedding. Traditionally organized and paid for by the groom as a surprise, these days honeymoon planning and costs are usually shared or contributions are made by friends and relatives. The world is literally your oyster and if you plan ahead well enough you can generally find some great deals either in Hawke’s Bay, wider New Zealand or further afield. New Zealand, for example, offers getaways, to Taupo, Nelson, Queenstown and the Bay of Islands. South Pacific islands conjure up images of hot lazy days lying beneath palm trees with a cocktail in hand and there’s a great choice from the Fiji Islands, to the Cook Islands, New Caledonia and romantic Tahiti. When inquiring about holiday options always mention that you will be on your honeymoon as you could receive special treats such as champagne on arrival or a room upgrade.

Weddings can be a daunting affair, but as with most NZ weddings, the hardest part is getting started with initial wedding preparations. If you are travelling overseas you’ll need to allow time to get a passport, visas, finalise money matters, and don’t forget to check if you need any special vaccinations.

The team at Best Travel can assist you with your overseas wedding planning, from airfares, accommodation, and wedding venues, to putting you in touch with a wedding planner who can do it all for you. Also what if you already have most of the necessities to feather a nest, or neither of you have much interest in domestic acquisitions, or you’re simply hoping that wedding gifts pay off in something you really want to do --like travel? In that case, and for couples who might not otherwise be able to afford a great trip, signing up for a honeymoon gift registry with Best Travel could ensure you get wedding gifts you really want

Marriage celebrants There’s a great selection of marriage celebrants who may be independent or affiliated with a church or organization.

T

here’s plenty of choice when it comes to selecting that special person to conduct your wedding ceremony; there are 33 registered celebrants in Napier alone! If you are members of a church your local minister or priest will generally conduct the ceremony and if you opt for marriage at a registry office you’ll be married by a Registrar of Marriages. Only those persons appointed by the Registrar-General as Marriage and/or Civil Union Celebrants and whose name appears in the List of Celebrants in the New Zealand Gazette have authority to solemnise marriages and/or civil unions in New Zealand. Registered celebrants may also belong to The Celebrants Association of New Zealand (CANZ) who perform many ceremonies, not just weddings. A wedding ceremony requires a Registered Marriage Celebrant, and may be performed at any time of the

day/night on any day of the year at any venue. The ceremony requires legal documents to be signed in the presence of two witnesses and a Registered Marriage Celebrant.

You’ll want to chat to celebrants on your short list to ensure he or she is the perfect match for your personality and style of wedding. You will be offered a personal

consultation to plan the ceremony and discuss vows, readings and poems. The celebrant will attend to all paperwork and legal aspects required.
