Horticulture’s Big Day Out
WELCOME The National Horticultural Field Days is positioning itself to be the key Horticulture event on the industry calendar, generating conversations among industry, providing a venue for discussing future growth strategies for the Horticulture industry and technical information transfer. This year’s event, held at Showgrounds Hawke’s Bay in Hastings will be noticeably bigger as the event grows itself to include more vegetable growers and attract a wider industry audience from its largely Pipfruit origins. Innovation and industry growth are the forefront of the National Horticultural Field Days, as the Horticulture industries work to meet projections of significantly expanding their export earnings. In order to achieve the $10billion target by 2020, the industry needs clever people, new technology, more efficient techniques and processes in order to act smarter and basically grow more, faster. As organisers of the event, the Hawke’s Bay A&P Society is
focussed on championing the primary sector and the Horticultural industry is a key component in that vision. Alongside the Society, Hawke’s Bay Fruitgrowers and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are committed partners of the event and dedicated to expanding the Field Day into a nationally significant Horticultural event. Our partnership with Massey University means the National Horticultural Field Day will provide a vital link between research and development and the commercialisation of science to industry. An exciting line up of speakers in the BNZ Seminar Series will solidify this event as a ‘must attend’ on the industry calendar. Bringing together Government, Science, technical presentations and industry insider updates. The Field Day provides an opportunity for the industry as a whole – small to medium scale growers, right through to larger corporate operators and suppliers, to come together and discuss just
how the industry is going to meet its export projections. With most exhibitors returning from last year and a very strong contingent of new exhibitors on board there will be plenty of new things to see. The focus on business to business interaction makes this event unique. And it is not often an event with this much value is free to attend so make sure you collect your complimentary ticket and get the most out of the day. We look forward to seeing you at the A&P Showgrounds on Thursday June 5 from 8.30am. Brent Linn General Manager, Hawke’s Bay A&P Society
Admission $10 Available at the gate or get your complimentary ticket beforehand from your trusted horticultural supplier

ABOUT OUR SPONSORS Hawke’s Bay Regional Council Hawke’s Bay Regional Council supports long term sustainable land management and the sustainable management of freshwater, consistent with HBRC’s vision for a region with a vibrant community, a prosperous economy, a clean and healthy environment for current and future generations.
HBRC is in the business of: • Natural resource management and governance; • Natural hazard assessment and mitigation; • Regional strategic planning (including statutory plans such as the regional policy statement); and • Regional scale infrastructure and services
HBRC has a focus on more innovative ways to undertake its role, with some weight on public sector reform coming from central Government. HBRC, with local councils, is in the process of upgrading the Regional Policy Statement to cover urban growth planning, integrated freshwater management and natural hazard planning. Further integration of regional transport planning is also underway. HBRC is actively partnering with the Department of Conservation, progressing options to jointly deliver services across areas including biosecurity, biodiversity, regional park management and science delivery. The objective
is for greater efficiency and effectiveness. A deeper partnership with Massey University also satisfies HBRC’s need for better access to science and research capacity, while also complementing the skills-based focus at the Eastern Institute of Technology. Through the Hawke’s Bay Regional Investment Company, HBRC proposes to invest in infrastructure assets to enhance the region’s economic base, while delivering environmental benefits and, in the medium term, a reasonable rate of return. Possibilities include water storage and more trees established in our highly erodible hill country.
The HB Fruitgrowers Association Charitable Trust The Charitable Trust was formed in 2000 thanks to a bequest to the Association by the late AB Smith. Formed to support the development, advancement and improvement of the Fruit growing industry in Hawke’s Bay, the Trust provides scholarships for local students of Horticulture and grants to assist with research, education, technology and promotion of Fruit growing. Each year the Trust receives applications for scholarships from Hawkes Bay people studying fruit related horticulture. Many of the applicants are involved in the industry
apprentice programme, a three year earn as you learn level four qualification based at the Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT). The programme is a partnership between EIT, the Primary Industry Training Organisation and the HB Fruitgrowers Association. Over the past few years the number of trainees in the programme has swelled and this has resulted in a record number of Scholarships being paid in 2014. Since 2002 the Charitable Trust has contributed close to half a million dollars for the benefit of the fruit growing industry.

Horticulture’s Big Day Out

HAWKE’S BAY REGIONAL COUNCIL Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is pleased to be a major partner of the National Horticultural Field Days, horticulture’s ‘Big Day Out’. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is committed to supporting our vital horticultural sector which contributes significantly to the Hawke’s Bay and national economy. The field day is an excellent opportunity for the many people and organisations involved in horticulture to come together to share ideas and viewpoints and learn about new innovations, for the good of the industry and the region. The proposal to invest in a water storage scheme in Ruataniwha has been a main focus for HBRC in the past few years. This scheme arose as a potential solution to improve both the environmental protection
of our rivers and the supply of more water for production. The process of assessing that proposal continues and our field day seminar will help you take a look at the realities of the scheme project and construction, with our potential investor Crown Irrigation Investments talking about how to accelerate irrigation investment. Planning for the future is an important role for the Regional Council, which has to consider horticulture needs amongst many other requirements. Catchment plan changes, water quality and quantity, biosecurity and biodiversity planning, transport network planning, flood protection upgrades in the face of climate change are just some of the areas we are currently working on, where horticulture view points are essential.
HBRC also supports the day to day needs of growers through servicing their resource consents, water metering, and enquiries on technical and science issues such as nutrient management. Our staff will be on hand at the field day to discuss these matters with growers and talk about some of the bigger issues that concern you. Enjoy your time at the field day!
GROWING OUR FUTURE Hawke’s Bay is actively moving to more sustainable and productive land use. Our regional economy is based on farming and horticulture, so efficient, innovative management of our land and water is vital for our future. Hawke’s Bay Regional Council is pleased to support the National Horticultural Field Day as an opportunity for horticulturalists and related operators to share ideas and learn about innovative approaches.
