Trusted, reliable heat
Welcome natural warmth and comfort into your home with Metrofires
Keeping warm is a basic need that we all share, and the ambience, natural warmth and comfort of a flickering fire is the perfect way to keep your home warm, dry and healthy.
Choose the best fire
Watching real flames, hearing and feeling the crackling heat have been the nicest features of a fire for thousands of years. The magic of a real fire has found it’s way back into our homes supported by ever increasing energy prices and climate issues. The Metro range of wood fires provides the genuine power of fire, the magic of its flames and the natural warmth it provides to the family home. A Metro fire will do more than simply heat your home. It can also heat water, save on power bills, provide security against electricity restrictions or outages, and can also be used to cook on and boil water for drinking. Metro offer both clean air approved and LTD models which operate at very high efficiencies when installed with the Metro ECO Flue system. Add a Metro Climate Control System and maximise heat usage to warm your entire home. Eliminate condensation and dampness to provide a healthy dry environment for your family.
Designed and manufactured in New Zealand, Metro utilises the highest quality materials, workmanship and the very latest manufacturing techniques. Ongoing investment into research and development, rigorous quality control and premium warranties are testament to Metro’s commitment to remain at the forefront of the wood fire industry. Trusted, reliable wood fires with style, exceptional performance and longevity at affordable prices that will heat your home for many years to come. Metro are proud to support local industry and New Zealand’s future.
The benefits of Metro
• Clean air approved models meet NZ’s stringent clean air requirements • LTD models feature longer burn times and the larger capacity wetbacks for water heating • Premium 10 year firebox warranty and 1 year parts warranty • Manufactured in 6, 8 and 10mm NZ carbon steel with fire brick lined fireboxes • Big on features, massive on performance, small on price • Proudly 100% New Zealand made • Trusted, reliable heat for your home
WARM HOMES
HAVE WARM WALLS
Would you like your home to have the warm wall feel of a new home?
The benefits of using wood to heat your home • A wood fire is relatively cheap to run, even if you have to purchase firewood. • If you have access to free firewood, your running costs will be close to zero. • Burning wood from sustainable forests is carbon neutral. While trees are growing, they capture carbon dioxide from the air. This carbon dioxide is released either when the wood is burnt, or when the tree dies and rots. While some emissions are produced in the transporting and processing of the wood, this is only a very small amount per unit of heat produced. • Wood is renewable and sustainable. New Zealand has extensive areas of forestry. Generation after generation of trees can be successfully harvested to produce firewood. • Metro wood fires will work during power cuts and can provide heat, hot water and also cook food on. • Most Metro models can be equipped with a wetback to heat household hot water.

Gas Bottles at Home – how does it work? Good things always come in pairs, so we deliver two 45kg bottles of LPG to your place. Most gas appliances can be connected to our bottles, mounted to the outside of your house. Each gas installation needs a gas fitting certificate issued by a craftsman gasfitter before the gas can be turned on and is available for use.
If you think bottled gas might be a go, it’s important that you choose a good site for your setup. We can help you do this as well as recommend a certified gasfitter. Also, you need to ensure that your site is able to support the regular delivery of our 45kg gas bottles before ordering bottled gas. To know more about the legal minimum clearance required when positioning two 45kg Contact Rockgas LPG bottles and safety non-negotiables you need to consider when ordering bottled gas, give us a call.
Kitchen and BBQ Whizz? You don’t have to be a flash cook to understand why chefs love cooking with gas. Whipping up a special feast or a quick mid-weeker is so much easier with the instant heat that gas gives. Of course you can have a BBQ any night of the week and with our small 9kg bottles you can heat up the barbie (and the outdoor heater) for a quick, smart snag or steak.
You’ll Love the Benefits of Gas Soak it up Gas can give you continuous hot water, no matter how many showers you have, because it’s heated as you use it, so it’ll never run cold. On top of that, it’s cost efficient because you’re only paying to heat the water you use – not a large hot water cylinder. Where’s that bubble bath?
When one gas bottle empties, your regulator should automatically switch to the next bottle. Give us a bell or order online when that happens and we’ll replace the empty bottle toot sweet.
You can

Cosy & Quick Imagine your whole house toasty warm in minutes. Gas is perfect for efficient central heating and you can even have the luscious look of a fire, without the hassle. There are plenty of other appliance options as well that look good and don’t hog space. Who knew you could be warm and sensible?
Transform your home - all your hot water, space heating and cooking needs from your trusted local Rockgas supplier. Count on us - reliable delivery of 45kg LPG cylinders to your home, business, or farm where ever you live.

Why ply? What is STRUCTURAL PLYWOOD? Structural plywood is a series of timber veneers glued and pressed at right angles to each other to form a rigid board. Radiata pine veneers are normally used in structural plywood. A water proof glue is used in structural plywood. The glue is usually identified by it’s red/brown/black colour. The glue bond is tested by a 72 hour boil test. The veneers are coated with glue then hot pressed under extreme pressure to set the glue and structural plywood is the result of this process. Structural plywood is normally pressed in uneven layers of veneers. Different thickness veneers are utilized to achieve varying plywood thicknesses. As a rule of thumb: • 3 ply = 4mm, 7mm, 9mm • 5 ply =9mm, 12mm, 15mm • 7 ply = 17mm, 19mm, 21mm • 9 ply = 25mm • 11 ply = 33mm Structural plywood will not deteriorate when it gets wet. Structural plywood standard size is 2.400 x 1.200 Some products available in 2.700 x 1.200 What is the difference between Marine and Structural plywood? Glue Line • Marine plywood Has a permanent type A phenolic bond • Structural plywood Has a permanent type A phenolic bond Timber Species • Marine plywood Can be made from timber selected for its density, bending strength, lightness, surface finishing characteristics & impact resistance • Structural plywood Is normally made from exotic pinus species plywood which have a stringy tough characteristic. These species are not naturally durable but are provided in treated form for extreme situations Structure (lay ups) • Marine plywood Is normally layed up with high quality veneers throughout all the veneer layers. Voids, gaps or knots are not allowed • Structural plywood Can be layed up with low grade veneers in the middle layers. Can have gaps, knots & voids
Finish (sanding) • Marine plywood Fine sanded both faces • Structural plywood Can range from unsanded both sides, sanded one side to sanded both sides Note: Tanalith type treated plywood has been successfully used in many marine applications. Many people ask for marine plywood when tanalith treated structural plywood would provide a more practical & economical solution. Tanalith plywood reacts adversely with aluminium. What plywood should I use outdoors? H3 treated radiata construction plywood. However, beware, as there are 2 different types of H3 treatment each with distinctive characteristics: • Water borne treatment. CCA (Copper Salts, Chrome, Arsenic) Trade name Tanalith & Impretec. Normally green in colour as some of the ingredients in these are copper salts, chrome & arsenic. There are a few DON’TS: a. Don’t use near aluminium, particularly in aluminium boats (creates electrolysis) b. Don’t use for housing pets that are prone to chewing. Do USE for: a. Do use for: substrates under butyl type membranes, shingles, stucco, fibre cement products etc b. Do use for all those outdoor projects.Compatible with marine glues and fibreglass resins • White spirit based treatment LOSP (Light Organic Solvent Preservative). Trade name Vascol or Protim. Contains solvent, oil & tin. Has a distinctive spirit smell when fresh. Is normally colourless. Again, a few DON’TS: a. Don’t use under butyl membranes (incompatible with solvents) b. Don’t use with marine glues and fibreglass resins (incompatible with solvents) DO USE for: a. all those outdoor projects. b. Both treatments have H3 classification (suitable for exterior use 300mm above ground) What plywood should I use for cladding? • Virtually any H3 treated structural plywood is suitable for exterior cladding. There are however some speciality cladding products manufactured. • 9mm plywood is normally the thinnest recommended for cladding purposes. • Lower grades can be used for a board and batten finish resulting in a rustic look.
• Some specialised claddings have a bandsawn finish which has a practical purpose as well as enhancing the appearance. • Some of the specialised claddings have grooves in the face at varying depths and centres. • The decision for or against is a personal choice. In all multi sheet applications such as in cladding situations provision must be made for expansion (ie a minimum of 3mm gap left between sheets). Some of the specialised claddings have a built in provision for this phenomena.
Claddings also provide effective bracing for structures. Plywood bracing can in fact provide the cladding requirements as well as providing the bracing requirement in a building. D-D grade structural plywood provides a satisfactory performance/cost ratio. Higher grade plywood’s provide more aesthetically pleasing finished surfaces.
Manufacturers and the NZ standards provide detailed information and should be referred to for specific instructions.

Home Comfort The popularity of Heat Pumps has risen dramatically over recent years. This has not been purely for their high energy efficiency ratings, but is also due to the numerous practical, convenient, and environmentally friendly benefits that ownership and installation can bring.
The most obvious benefit of a heat pump at this time of the year is its ability to provide warmth. This can be achieved with the simple touch of a button: at the wall; or on the remote; and even from the comfort of your chair. Heat pumps can very quickly increase the temperature of a room. However, did you know, they can also be used for Cooling or Air Conditioning Your comfort is the single most important feature of a heat pump, and you are in control. A heat pump provides you with the ability to easily control and maintain your climate to your own levels.
Pure Convenience A heat pump enables you to increase or decrease the temperature of your room, or switch from heating to cooling in an instant and at the push of a button.
Heat pumps can heat up or cool down a room within a few minutes, then, once the room reaches your preferred temperature, the heat pump will maintain that temperature for as long as you require it to. Heat pumps don’t create smoke, ashes, moisture or any other waste material for you to remove. When cooling or dehumidifying your home there is no need to empty the reservoir of water as your heat pump is plumbed in and has a permanent drain to the outside. There are no flames or hot surfaces that children or pets can touch and burn themselves on. They can also be safely left on while you asleep and you can even leave your heat pump on when you go out and it won’t cost you a fortune to have the luxury of returning home to a comfortable temperature. Many heat pumps have the additional benefit of programmable timers which allow you to warm up your room prior to getting up on a cold morning or before your return from work.
A Healthier Home As your Heat Pump circulates the air in your room, the filters clean and purify the air removing dust, mold spores, odours, smoke and other particles. They are excellent for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. Also there is no need to sit near the unit in order to benefit from the heat as the air in the room is warmed and circulated for the benefit of all. During summer, when you are using your heat pump for cooling, the room is automatically dehumidified as a function of the Heat Pump. As the warm air circulates through the unit moisture forms on the cold surface of the coil and then drains outside. During winter the heat pump prevents condensation forming on cold surfaces such as windows by circulating warm air around the room. A warm, dry, comfortable environment with the addition of air conditioning will always be first choice for prospective home buyers over a house without such sought after benefits.

How well does your Garden Grow? That is the question for some of us and for others Gosh it is so unfair the have GREEN THUMBS. Well a couple of things to help you along the Road to GREEN THUMBS. When choosing your plant be it an annual or the tree you have always wanted ALWAYS choose wisely. Healthy well balanced no damage if possible AND not the least will it grow well in your region that is one of the most important questions. When planting tease the roots out from being wrapped in the bag that it came in always dig a hole at least ½ big again as the size of the root ball place compost and fertiliser in the hole before planting trim plant if required then plant and give it a good watering so as to soak the plant and a liquid feed. Now onwards throughout winter and into late spring early summer is the optimum time for planting all plants from annuals to trees. The ground is damp so ease of digging and making for easy planting.
As soon as the fruit trees have completely dropped their leaves and especially under Peaches Nectarines etc. that suffered with Curly leaf last year pick up and burn all old leaves as these will carry spore for next season and re-infect your trees. Prune and spray up 3 times over the winter months with copper with last spray just before bud burst. Above is Pruning instructions for pruning of your new fruit and ornamental trees you buy this year for your garden. Mauways Nursery NEW SEASONS locally sourced Fruit and ornamental trees will be in stock from 2nd week in JULY 2017 onwards. It all begins with the floor Your floor covering is an important part of your decor and it should suit the character and ambience you want to create in a room whilst also matching your lifestyle. Making the right floor covering choice can be confusing with a wide range of options. This guide aims to simplify your decision by outlining the factors that are important to finding the most suitable flooring for you and to suit New Zealand’s unique conditions. Choose flooring for your lifestyle • Do you have children, pets or lots of visitors that will increase traffic and wear on your flooring? • Do you have elderly relatives or small children that make safety important? • Do you want a low-maintenance solution? • How long are you planning to stay in the home? • Does anyone living in the home have allergies? Choose flooring for your environment Every room in your house has its own unique flooring challenges, ask yourself:
• Is the room used often by the whole family? • Will people be eating and drinking there? • WilI there be a lot of heavy furniture? • Is the flooring exposed to direct sunlight?
These are some of the factors that will help determine the type of flooring that is most suitable for the different rooms in your home and the conditions it Is subjected to. Define your Style Your flooring is the foundation of the room. It has to coordinate with and complement other style elements. You should have some idea of the type of ambience you want to create before you start. Here are some considerations: • Have you chosen a particular decorating style? • Is there a colour scheme you particularly like? • Do you have existing furnishings that your flooring will have to co-ordinate with? • Are there any feature items that will anchor the decor style of the room - rugs, paintings, sculpture, furniture items, etc.? Budget How much of your decorating budget can be used for flooring? Flooring is not just looked at, it is used. Flooring is likely to be

one of the most significant decor costs, but it is also the most used part of any room. To be sure your flooring meets your expectations of performance and durability for each room, use the best quality flooring for high wear areas such as hallways, entrances and stairs, and lighter weight carpet for the lower traffic areas such as bedrooms. Before making a decision, ask the sales person to help you work out an estimate on the total cost of the flooring. This should also include extras like carpet removal and disposal, installation and underlay. Remember, the cost to install your flooring remains the same regardless of quality, so spending a little more on a better quality carpet may not affect the total cost as much as you think. The 60 - 30 -10 Principle This rule-of-thumb guide is followed by interior decorators in creating harmonious living spaces. While generally applied to paint effects, it can be extended to include your floor covering as part of the overall decor scheme. Essentially, 60% of the surfaces in the room you are decorating should be in the main chosen colour (primary colour). 30% should be in a complementary colour or tone and the remaining 10% in an accent or contrasting colour. Given standard room dimensions, walls would generally be in your primary colour, while floors would be In the secondary colour. Accent colours can be brought in with furnishings, accessories such as cushions, paintings, objects or even flooring effects such as rugs, carpet borders or insets. Colour sets the mood of the room Blues, greys and greens are “cooling” and serene. Whereas reds, yellows and browns warm the room. Darker flooring (especially carpet) tends to show lint and dust, but disguises dirt and can make a room seem smaller and cosier. Lighter flooring will disguise lint and dust, but show dirt and make a room seem larger. Middle tone and patterned carpet disguises dust, lint and dirt. Importantly with interior design, you should start from the floor up.
