celebrating the civil construction industry successes
What ayear we have all had. Just as Northlanders didn’thave a summer, our Contractors didn’t get aconstruction season. With multiple severeweather events, our industry came together to open roads, fix bridges and get people to wherethey needed to go. In addition to this we completedsome verycool projects and aselect few made it to thebig screen on the night.
In news from the AGM, the branch had four spots up for election on ourExecutiveteam.
Three members werere-elected, and we welcomed anew member to our team, Christo Jansen van Vuuren. We farewelled a long-standing Executivemember as Murray Clements did not stand forre-election this year.Murray has put his heartand soulinto the branch, especially with our Regional Excavator Operator Competition. Murray, CCNZ Northland can’tsay thank you enough
for your efforts!

STEVE BOWLING CONTRACTING &GHK PILING
Steve Bowling Contracting Ltd have been operating in Northland for 28 years with the commencement of the business in 1995. We areaproudly locally owned &operated family run business. Steve Bowling Contracting Ltd specializes in civil construction work including structural reinforced concrete works (foundations, structures), slip remediation, driveways, retaining walls, excavations, subdivisions, timber walkways &structures and demolition work.
GHK Piling is aspecialist piling division of SBC Ltd, that has the capability to install abroad range of foundation solutions including driven &bored piles, sheet piling, and other ground engineering solutions such as retaining walls, screw piles &ground anchors.
Atthe recent Northland Construction Awards held by the Northlandbranch of CivilContractors New Zealand, Steve Bowling Contracting came away with 4wins.
The firstawardwin was forthe Construction Projects between $0 -$500,000 for the Paihia to Opua Coastal Walkway. The contract for the boardwalk and bridge replacement on the Far North District Council Paihia to Opua walking track involved work in asensitive tidal wetland area, whereequipment and materials access onto the site is verylimited. The work commenced duringthe difficult 2022 period when timber supply incurred longlead times. To minimisethe structurereplacement costs and tidal wetland disturbance, the design required re-use of the original boardwalk piles once these wereproven by testing to be adequate, and thereplacementofany
inadequate piles. SteveBowling Contracting pre-fabricated the bridge offsite for installation by barge, and pre-cut boardwalk components thus minimisingthe impact on the sensitive mangrove forest site. Theboardwalkand bridgeform part of apopular walk and the purpose of the project was to ensurethe replacement structures meet current loading requirements, as wellasprovide an attractive amenity for visitors to access and enjoy a tidal wetland area. Steve Bowling Contracting staffpaid careful attention to the quality of workmanship throughout construction. The completed workisanimportant link on the walking track amenity between Paihia and Opua, which is also part of the Te AraroaTrail between Cape Reinga and Bluff
The other wins werefor theConstruction Projects $500,00 to $1,000,000 Award, the Health &Safety Awardand Environmental
Award. The Construction Projects $500,00to $1,000,000 Awardwas for the constructionof anew Balance Tank at the existing Mangawhai Wastewater Treatment Plant (MWWTP). The new tank enables the existing hydraulic capacity to be expanded duringthe peak summer period and means that theintake capacity of the plant canexpand, andthe tank can operate as an overflow tank during major peak flows events and general storm events. Theproject spanned8months from concrete footings to completion of structures.
Steve Bowling Contractingwon the structural concrete package while sister company SSP Engineeringwon thepackagesfor the structural steel andmechanical piping. Health &Safety concerns wereofkey importance with construction taking place within alive/ operational waste water plant. Construction
operational open-top wastewater tank with an ever-present risk of sickness to the team due to airand water-borne pathogens. Innovations were developed that reduced health andsafety risk on the project, but also created efficiencies. Leaving oneend of the tank opentoavoid confined spaces and provide access (without scaffold access) and the development of abespoke reinforcing bar lifter to place bars in stitch joints were examples of this. Theclient commented “The execution of the install waswell planned which left for asmoothconstruction period.
Steve Bowling Contracting’sperformancewas exceptional with skilled tradesmen completing the work. They completed allthe works to an extremely high standardwith ahigh-quality finish.”

Judge’sComments
One of the key success factors for this project was the focus on identifying problems and risks early, coming up with cost-effective innovations and developing acollaborative, solutions-focused relationship with the client to mitigate the risks as much as possible, and to get ahead of the challenges.
Adjusting designs, work methodologies and adapting “on the fly” they achieved an outstanding result for the client.

Judge’sComments
A“can-do” attitude and development of ahuman powered pile driving instrument weresome of the elements that helped to reduce the impact of this project on the environment.
Days wereplanned to work tidal windows using asmall construction barge to install the bridge piles and superstructure.
The team used existing materials onsite to create safe access to the shifting workface while minimising disturbance of ‘seabed’.

Judge’sComments:
This was avery well delivered project in ahigh-profile location, with aset of unique challenges due to proximity to stream and ocean, combined with the adverse weather patterns throughout construction. The project required careful collaboration with anumber of interested stakeholders such as NRC and local Iwi. The Earthworx team should be commended for delivering aquality job with arelatively small core team despite the challenges presented -and of course having avery satisfied client at the end.
