Nelson Tasman has no shortage of options that tick all the boxes for travelling families. Photo: Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, courtesy of Chocolate Dog Photography

Escape with the kids this Spring For some, it is hard to fathom that the words travel and children could ever go hand in hand; two seemingly uncontrollable variables that many parents prefer not to intertwine. But for others, travelling together is a priceless opportunity to be seized at every turn.

N

elson Tasman is a much-loved holiday destination for many New Zealander’s, with family traditions often spanning back through the generations. The nostalgia of days gone by awaken a sense of connection amongst returning visitors, recounting days spent out on the water and mornings spent chasing the sunrise. Nestled amongst rolling hills and a sweeping coastline are a range of activities and accommodation options designed to cater to all ages, and despite the varied landscapes that stretch from the city through to the bay, everything in Nelson Tasman is surprisingly close. It’s only an

hour’s drive from the airport to the golden sands of the Abel Tasman National Park, and only a short walk from the central city to one of the country’s most stunning vantage points. You can be here in less time than it takes to get off the southern motorway, and with over 400 flights touching down in the region each week, parents can rejoice in the fact that there are minimal opportunities for the dreaded “are we there yet?” question to leave anyone’s lips. Where To Stay Nelson Tasman has no shortage of options that tick all the boxes for travelling families. An itinerary that makes the most of the stunning

landscapes, abundant activities and intriguing wildlife in the Abel Tasman National Park is catered to by a vast range of accommodation options. A spacious room with rustic charm spans over two levels at Awaroa Lodge, and is ideally located for an early morning adventure in the park. Meanwhile, Kaiteriteri and Marahau, also referred to as ‘gateways to paradise’, offer more convenience for families seeking vehicle access and the ability to come and go as you please. Whether you choose to base yourselves in the waterfront apartments or the more modest campgrounds, the idyllic seaside setting is guaranteed to be a hit.

CLOCKWISE FROM ABOVE: Kaiteriteri Recreation Reserve | Pic’s Peanut Butter World | Tahunanui Beach Reserve | The Jester House | Cable Bay Adventure Park Closer to the city, Tahuna Beach Holiday Park is surrounded by one of the most epic outdoor playgrounds imaginable. Right on the doorstep of your apartment motel you’ll find a place designed to entertain the kids for hours on end, with a go-kart track, trampoline park, laser tag course, a hydro slide, bumper boats, mini golf, and even a zoo! What To Do Rolling hills and valleys, a sweeping golden coastline, three national parks and a thriving marine environment combine to create an extraordinary setting in which to awaken a child’s curiosity and instil in them a love for adventure. Activities on the water are abundant, with options to suit all ages; a canyoning trip for the teenagers, a wildlife tour for the kiddies, or an indulgent sailing experience for the adults. Beyond the pristine waters of Tasman Bay, you’ll find a wealth of opportunities to embrace new experiences and create shared memories with loved ones. Leisurely cycle routes take

riders on a journey to some of the region’s most famed scenic attractions, passing vineyards, beaches, galleries, tunnels and shipwrecks. Able to be broken up into smaller sections suitable for little riders, you can easily indulge in the region’s great tastes, whether that is interpreted as a cheeky cellar door visit, a quick dip at the Mapua Wharf or a family picnic in an idyllic setting. A short distance from Nelson City is an adventure park like no other, where children both big and small can revel in the delight of horse-riding, mudrides, quad-biking, a skywire and more. But if outdoor adventures don’t appeal to your taste, perhaps a visit to Pic’s Peanut Butter World could be on the cards. Attempt to make your own delicious spread, or simply watch as the world’s most-loved peanut butter is roasted, ground, pumped and sealed in the factory below. Where To Eat Nelson Tasman has no shortage of quick, easy meals to satisfy rumbling tummies, and delicious selections of artisanal

wine and craft beer are always on hand to quench the thirst resulting from a busy day out. Sprig and Fern and The Mussel Inn are renowned for their laidback, family-friendly vibe as well as for their artisanal beverages, with their iconic taverns replacing cell-phones, TV’s and WiFi with live music and board games. Similarly, the Jester House is a whimsical world of giant chess boards, eel-feeding, mazes and mosaics designed to keep the children entertained in an alfresco dining setting. Waterfront dining is an excellent choice for parents who desire a relaxing evening by the sea, sipping on a glass of Pinot and watching as the children play happily nearby. Giant burgers and mini-golf in Kaiteriteri, seafood and sandcastles in Marahau, or wine-bars and wharf-jumping in Mapua; the choices are endless.

Golden Bay Itinerary If you’re stuck for ideas on how to entertain the kids these school holidays - look no further - because we’ve got you sorted with our fun-for-all ages guide to Golden Bay. DAY 1 Day one of your trip brings a scenic journey over the Takaka Hill, otherwise known as ‘marble mountain’. Perched proudly atop the hill is the entrance to the Ngarua Caves, which provides a welcome interval to entertain the little ones. Your tour guide welcomes you in as a whimsical world is revealed right before your eyes. Having developed over millions of years, the cave is filled to the brim with gigantic stalactites and stalagmites, adorning the interior like shark teeth. Descending the Takaka Hill, your next stop is Te - Springs. A short Waikoropupu walk through manuka and kanuka forest will take you to the largest freshwater springs in the southern hemisphere,

with water so clear it is almost impossible not to see the eels and fish darting around under the surface. The evening calls for some live music and something to fill the tummy, and there’s no better place to find that than at The Mussel Inn. A quirky, rustic venue known for its undeniably great atmosphere and delicious artisanal beverages; you’ll get a true ‘taste’ for the spirit of Golden Bay here. Returning to your accommodation at Zatori for the evening, tuck the kids in bed and relax on the deck with a glass of wine, or hop into the sauna to truly unwind from the days activities. DAY 2 Waking up to a picturesque sunrise at Zatori, you’ll find peace in knowing that you’re right on the doorstep of today’s adventures. A short walk through coastal farmland toward the wonderful, windswept Wharariki Beach will provide spectacular

views of the rugged coastline and towering arches. The kids will be in their element, rolling down the sand dunes and playing in the rockpools, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot some seal pups snoozing on the rocks. Nearby, even more excitement awaits, and you may choose to spend the afternoon riding horseback through the native forest canopy, discovering some of the iconic landmarks that featured in Peter Jackson’s famous movies. DAY 3 As day three dawns, you’ll head a couple of minutes down the road to the quaint Collingwood township, and hop aboard a tour bus to travel the length of Farewell Spit. A whopping 35km long, the spit is one of the largest in the world and is home to an endless array of wildlife guaranteed to mesmerise the little ones, from the colony of gannets to fur seal pups and cheeky oyster-catchers.

You’ll want to spend the rest of the day relaxing at one of the nearby beaches, because running along the dunes which tower over the spit is guaranteed to use up some excess energy.

if some refreshment is what you need, you could always take a short stroll to Wainui Falls, which are guaranteed to curtain you in a halo of spray as they tumble into the rocky riverbed below.

DAY 4 This morning you’ll set out with Golden Bay Kayaks from Tata Beach. Tata is known for for its golden sands and the picturesque islands of Ngawhiti and Motu, which lay just off the coast. The islands are home to the country’s largest colony of spotted shags and a playful local seal community, and on occasion, lucky visitors might even spot a penguin or two. Your tour guide will have you paddling through the Tata archway, welcoming you into the stunning Wainui Bay at the head of the Abel Tasman National Park. Upon your return, you may find that the glistening sands of Tata Beach are too difficult to resist, spending the afternoon basking under the suns glorious rays. Or,

DAY 5 Labyrinth Rocks Park is guaranteed to burn some energy before the drive back over the marble mountain. A fascinating short walk amongst limestone outcrops, kids will find thrill in discovering small figurines veiled under fallen leaves, and spotting the faces which have been etched into the rocks. The final stop on your Golden Bay adventure will have you casting your line into the river at the Anatoki Salmon Farm, reminiscing on your extraordinary family getaway. Watch in awe as the fish dart around under the surface, taking cautious nibbles on your line, then choose a picnic spot on the riverbank to tuck into your freshly smoked catch.

A Spring Escape For Two

I

t happens to the best of us. As days turn to months, and months to years, the passion and romance that characterised the beginning of a relationship takes a back seat. Conversations about future aspirations are gradually replaced with those about packed lunches, and spontaneity is gradually replaced with the comfort of routine. Sound familiar? Now, imagine a place where romance thrives and where opportunities to connect are plentiful, offering tranquil settings guaranteed to put the spring back into your step and the spark back into your relationship. A place where idyllic scenery, indulgent culinary experiences, and a bustling, boutique arts scene are just the beginning. Nestled amongst the rolling hills of the Top of the South, that place could be a lot closer than you think. The luxurious setting of the Abel Tasman National

Park is an obvious place to start. Explore the swooping golden beaches, glistening bays and lush native forest at your own pace, abandoning routine in favour of some light-hearted indulgence. With beachfront lodges ideally spaced throughout the park at both Awaroa and Torrent Bay, you can spend your days kayaking the pristine coastline, taking a stroll along the Coastal Track, or cruising to your heart’s content. Escaping from the concept of time, days here transcend swiftly into night, marked only the gentle sound of the waves lulling you to sleep, and the chorus of birdsong alerting you to the dawn of a new day. Closer to the city, quaint terraced cottages and exquisite hotels offer ample opportunity to wine and dine the night away in Nelson’s central dining precinct. The hospitality hub is home to many of the country’s finest restaurants, watering holes and artisan markets, serving

up fresh regional cuisine in a boutique urban setting. The perfect excuse to savour new flavours and indulge in a vast selection of artisanal wines, beers and ciders, Nelson Tasman’s famed craft beer and wine trails promise a unique and extraordinary tasting experience for two amongst the region’s stunning natural landscapes. Home to one of the largest numbers of working artists and galleries in the country, Nelson Tasman is a place where creativity breeds connection. Couples can seize any number

of opportunities to immerse in the regions bustling arts culture, and even try their hand at it themselves. Shop for contemporary artisan jewellery at the Jens Hansen Studio, observe intricate glass-blowing techniques at Hoglund Art Glass, participate in a pottery making workshop at Alchemy Arts, or be mesmerised by the spectacular displays of wearable art garments and classic cars at the worldrenowned National WOW Museum. It’s all possible here in the Top of the South. So, if you’re

finding yourself being swept away with everyday life more often than you’re being swept off your feet, some alone time with your loved one may be just what you need to put the spring back into your step this season.

THRILLS AND SPILLS

S

A

drenaline seekers often refer to Nelson Tasman as heaven on earth, and it’s easy to see why. Snow, sea, rivers, mountains and skies, the region is a hub for thrills and spills of all kinds. From the historic gold-rush town of Murchison to the pristine natural playground nestled in the depths of the Abel Tasman National Park, it’s the ideal setting for anyone with a thirst for adventure and an undeniable sense of fearlessness. Just a short distance from Nelson City is Cable Bay Adventure Park, a place that locals like to refer to as a thrillseekers paradise. Here you can traverse undulating muddy terrain by quad bike, explore open farmland on horseback, battle it out with friends in paintball warfare, ride the rivers on board the amphibious Argo, or whizz through the sky on the world’s longest flying fox. And as if that’s not enough, you can then venture into the native forest canopy to learn the ancient skills of archery. Practicing your aim, you’ll get to hunt for life-like fantasy targets as you cross glistening streams and negotiate untouched territory. Visitors are often surprised to learn that amongst its stunning waterfront setting, Tahunanui Beach also harbours a daredevil heart. Nestled behind the sand dunes is an adventure park of a different kind, offering hours of entertainment for small and large groups looking for a bit of healthy competition. Take each other on at the Pro-Karts track or practice your stealth with an adrenaline-

Escape to packed Laser Combat experience. Alternatively, if your thrills come from being on or near the water, then a canyoning expedition or white-water adventure should definitely be on the cards. A popular activity for teenagers and adults alike, Nelson Tasman has some of the best canyoning experiences in the country, where you can abseil down granite canyons, zip through unspoiled rainforest, slide off the edge of gushing waterfalls, and jump into pristine natural pools. Slightly further afield in Murchison, you could spend an exhilarating afternoon jetboating down the majestic Buller Gorge or riding the rolling river rapids in a whitewater rafting experience. Last but not least, if free-falling from the sky gets your heart racing (in a good way), then why not treat yourself to a skydive? Nelson Tasman is the only place in the country where you can take in awe-inspiring views of the North and South Island, three national parks and one of the largest natural sandspits in the world. The perfect way to end an exhilarating escape, you’ll bear witness to some of New Zealand’s most breath-taking alpine and coastal scenery as you soar through the skies. ABOVE: Vaughan Morris and kids having fun in Abel Tasman | Pictures courtesy of @themorrismob It has been twelve years since Vaughan and I spent time holidaying around the top of the South Island as a new couple, armed with all the freedom in the world. Twelve years on, we jumped at the chance to build some new memories and take Franca (9) and Ashton (7) back to re-trace some of the steps we took. DAY 1 Landing at Nelson Airport on Ashtons 7th birthday was a great birthday treat for him. We were all left in awe of the amazing scenery from up above, only to be more amazed as we drove over the Takaka Hill. Here we did some fishing at Anatoki Salmon which was a huge success, and having it cooked on-site with a cold beer was a pretty epic start to a fun week away. We drove to our accommodation for the next

few nights, before going for a special birthday dinner at the legendary Mussel Inn (which lived up to all our expectations). A special shout out for the lovely touch of a homemade cake for Ashton – it really made his day complete! DAY 2 Was an early start to make the most of the wonderful Golden Bay weather (yes, even in April). I must say travelling our beautiful country in the shoulder season is well worth considering - none of the crowds, but still plenty of sunshine hours. Our morning activity consisted of a kayaking trip with Golden Bay Kayaks, departing from the sandy shores in front of their premises. Here we saw seals frolicking and sunning themselves, which was super exciting for the kids, and learnt so much from our guide about the history and sea life as

we paddled up and down the coastline. We finished off the afternoon with a trip to Wainui Falls; a fun and easy walk, with swing-bridges to cross and a beautiful New Zealand bush track to explore. A long lunch of homemade pizzas and craft beers at the rustic “Toto’s” was next on the cards. Perched high on a clifftop, we felt that we were somewhere on a stunning Greek Island. DAY 3 We went on a day trip with Farewell Spit Tours, boarding a bus from the quaint Collingwood for a day adventuring on the 35km long sandspit. A bird sanctuary and wetland area that is only accessible by tour bus, we were treated to some of the most beautiful scenery and a whole lot of wildlife. We had the most

informative tour guide I have ever come across, and learnt so much about this magical place at the top of the South Island. It was a long day but the kids were never bored with seal spotting (we saw a lot), dune racing, a lighthouse visit, and lots of breaks to get out and stretch our legs. DAY 4 The next morning we ventured back over the hill to check out some more of the beautiful Abel Tasman. If you have ever been to Kaiteriteri Beach you will know what I am talking about when I say that the sand is the most stunning colour a beach can be; a rich gold that we just do not see up in the North. It’s here that we boarded the Wilsons Cruise for a journey through the Abel Tasman National Park, the same park that Vaughan and I had once kayaked those many

years ago. We jumped off for a few hours at Anchorage Bay for a bush walk and some dune jumping, before heading back over to Nelson for our last few nights. DAY 5 & 6 Over in Nelson we stayed at the Tahuna Beach Holiday Park, which was the perfect location for our adventures. We spent our time exploring Nelson with a visit to Natureland and Pics Peanut Butter World, where we got to watch the delicious spread being created. Ending on a high, we spent our last day at Cable Bay Adventure Park, riding the skywire and having some fun with archery. The kids loved both of these, and it was the perfect way to end our epic week in this stunning part of New Zealand. Beth Morris | @themorrismob

A fun day out for the whole family, bring along a picnic blanket and some snacks, and watch as the two teams battle it out once more for the title of champion.

New Zealand Cider Festival 16th November 2019 Can you picture yourself relaxing in the sunshine, sipping on a glass of fruity cider, watching as the children play nearby? If so, then you need to mark the New Zealand Cider Festival in your calendar.
