Welcome to the Fast and Forward Forestry Expo Brought to you by the Forest Industry Contractors Association (FICA), the Fast & Forward Forestry puts Forestry centre stage. It’s time to celebrate and showcase forestry advances to the industry and the contribution forestry makes to the New Zealand economy. We’re here to feel proud of where forestry is today. There have been monumental changes with technology and mechanisation to provide an environment that reduces the risks of what were very manual operations across the forestry supply chain. Today we have our workforce operating highly technical machinery to harvest trees, transport and increased productivity with lesser people on the slopes and world class equipment that reduces the environmental impact on the land. Overall, this transformation has been significant and we as an industry are proud to use this EXPO to showcase these changes. Whether you’re from the forestry industry or this is your first taste of our great industry, there’s something for everyone.

Be a Mate Mental wellbeing is a topical challenge for any workplace in this crazy world and forestry has not escaped from it. FICA are keen to put funds together to initiate a programme to support our forestry whanau. The Forestry Industry is coming together for an industry dinner, featuring the auction, as part of the Fast and Forward Forestry Expo 2022.

SUPPORT A HEALTHY FORESTRY WORKFORCE WITH GOOD HEADSPACE AND TOOLS TO COPE Connector Training

FICA has been working with Mates4Life Hawke’s Bay, a suicide awareness and prevention programme being delivered at no cost to workplaces and organisations across Hawke’s Bay.

Safety Aider Training

The aim is to provide a long-term, sustainable, no barriers suicide awareness and prevention training approach that is specific to the needs of workplaces and communities.

How to respond to someone with suicidal thoughts with skilled intervention, and how to develop a robust safety plan, critical to keep the person with suicidal thoughts safe.

Ēhara tāku toa i te toa takatahi, engari he toa takitini.

Grower Training

Our strength is not made from us alone, but made from many. Awareness TALK Information about the impact of suicide, signs someone in need of help, how to connect them to the right support.

Recognise signals of help, respond with safety and care, and connect the person to a Safety Aider if needed.

The skillset required to manage and support someone returning to work after a recent experience with suicide or mental distress. www.mates4life.org.nz

FACTS ABOUT FORESTRY 1. 6.25bn estimated log export earnings in 2021 2. 40k+ employed in the industry across New Zealand 3. 1.665m ha of plantation forest area (estimate at 1 April 2020) 4. 32.9 million m3 harvested from NZ forests in 2020 5. 3,697 export dollars per hectare per year 6. 55% of log exports go to China 7. World forests’ carbon fell from 668 gigatonnes in 1990 to 662 gigatonnes in 2020

People Working in the Sector The sector has increased the number of jobs over the last 10 years providing employment to over 40 thousand people. The sector is male dominated (82%), but more women are joining the sector (in 2016, 23% of new entrants to the sector were female). Women working in the sector are more highly qualified and tend to occupy more science related positions but we have a some really great females performing across

the whole of the supply chain from silviculture, harvesting and transport. Individuals and organisations across the forestry and wood processing sector are taking steps to attract, train, and retain a workforce that is skilled, safe and productive.

Transformation Moving Forward The Forestry Industry Transformational Plan is all about transforming the industry to be more productive and sustainable, The forestry and wood processing sector was prioritised as it will underpin our low emissions and productive economy. The government forestry agency Te Uru Rakau are partnering with Māori, industry, workers and key stakeholders to develop this plan which will support a wide range of government programmes. The Plan is deliberate about how we use our valuable wood resources and get more value from our woody biomass and logs.
