ur school is nestled away in the heart of the Kaingaroa Forest. The pine trees stand tall, surrounding our village like a warm, protective embrace. Our akonga thrive in the village, in the safety of the forest. The village is theirs and now they know it! Here is a taste of some of the “happenings” at Kaingaroa Forest School:

• Balls bounced with determination, encouragement called out, sweat dripping, skills strengthening! Energy extinguished - training to participate in the weekly Rotorua Basketball Association competition. • Silence falls… Remembrance… Respect for the lost, the hurt, the fallen. Values

Education… ANAZC, Armistice Day and other memorials for horrible atrocities that have hit our nation. • Paired voices, supportive words, encouragement and praise, challenge - tuakana/teina approaches to improve achievement across the curriculum.

• Bags are bursting, filled with gear! Quickly everything is loaded up and ready! The sound of seatbelts clicking, korero buzzing, giggles and nervous energy fill the van! It’s time to go! The warmer weather is here and swimming lessons are starting again!

Kia ora koutou katoa. Since 2017, we have grown from 11 akonga to today, 59! WOW! So firstly, to our whanau who have supported us, enrolling their tamariki, THANK YOU! You have helped us go from one single classroom to three thriving classrooms, filled with life and learning! Our dedicated team of 10 staff find exciting ways to engage akonga in purposeful learning experiences. It’s best to make an appointment if you want to see any of us because we are often out and about - engaged in our local curriculum! Take a look!

• “He aha W.H.I.R.A?” Whanaungatanga; Honesty; Integrity; Respect; Aroha! Tautoko to “own it”. Awhi for acceptance. “I am sorry…” owning mistakes. Restoring relationships with dignity and mana.

KFS celebrates the th h start stt rtt of 2019 with th h our NZ Police & iSport rt. t

• Pens moving, books rustling, akonga searching for just the right vocabulary adjective, simile or metaphor? Korero, thinking, thinking, thinking… Writing time at KFS! • Helmets clicking, bikes zooming, tamariki beaming bright smiles! Laughter sounds out - as they navigate their way around their bike track! Fun and exploration across the school!

Ex Excited x as we arr rri rive i at Digital Nati tives i Academy for the th h eSport rts ts tournament!

Finally, we would like to thank the Ngati Whakaue Education Endowment Trust Board for supporting our Mana and Piki Ora classes this year and in 2020 - Breaking down barriers; taking learning risks; improving personal achievement. Also, Kaingaroa Timberlands - AMAZING! You are all helping us create agentic, confident learners! Look out 2020! Nga mihi nui ki a koutou. Na Marylouise Macpherson-Hall & our KFS Whanau

This provides steps for learners to move towards Level 1 of the NZC. Our older students progress from skills acquisition to a more functional life skill focus, to support their transition to a more functional life skills focus to support their transition from school into a range of adult settings and/or work experience if applicable.

School Vision Statement - Keep Moving, Keep Learning, Keep Growing Tena koutou ki te Kura o Owhatiura, Lynmore School We are a large and very popular primary school in Rotorua, New Zealand catering for children from Year 0 -Year 6. The school was opened in 1956 on the Owhatiura South Block alongside Te Ngae Road. There is a school bus for children living at the Lake Okareka and Lake Tarawera but most children either walk or are driven to school each day. The school has an enrolment zone and the roll ranges between 600–680 pupils each year. Most children attend an early childhood centre before starting at Lynmore School and there are several in the area from which parents choose from. When children leave Lynmore School at the end of Year 6 students most attend the local intermediate, Mokoia Intermediate School, and then onwards to Rotorua Lakes High School. When students enrol they are placed into a whanau/house group (Waitawa, Te Papa o Ruamoa, Taewaenga or Kaipakau). These names were gifted to us by our kaumatua and they represent local landmarks in the area. We elect whanau group leaders from our Year 6 children each year and encourage leadership opportunities for our students. The FISH! Philosophy is central to the way we behave at school along with our school values of Aroha, Maui - Curiosity, Maia - Courage and Pono - Integrity. Our Vision Statement is: Keep Moving, Keep Learning, Keep Growing

The winning Bay Maths teams 2019 in Tauranga.

We have a native bush area called Waitawa bush which children can use for environmental. studies and have been heavily involved in pest trapping and restortion of the native bush. The school has a strong focus on science, health and sports, swimming, environmental awareness and cultural activities. We run a ‘play based’, discovery learning environment in the first 2 years of school and work closely with the local ECE centres to transition children well into school. There are a huge range of opportunities for the children to be involved in including all the regular sports codes (touch rugby, cricket, hockey, netball, football) chess, skiing, duathalons, spelling bee, maths and reading competitions, swimming, flippaball, enviro club, boxing, kapa haka, pest trapping, coding and technology, Showquest, etc. We have a very good international student programme and currently have excellent English Second Language support, we warmly welcome international students from all over the world. We endeavour to support whanau and have developed a largely personalised curriculum approach and are a strongly future focussed school. We have good whanau information sharing opportunities through our Seesaw online digital portfolios. We have an

Malfroy School Mission Statement We strive to do our personal best and help make a happy caring school.

Principal’s statement Kia ora! I am often asked by prospective parents and caregivers what’s special about our school? For me, Malfroy School has an incredible history of strong values, a sense of community, educational excellence, a blend of the arts, culture, and sports where all students can find some measure of personal satisfaction and success. Teachers and support staff genuinely care for our students and families. In 2015 we held the Malfroy School 60 Years Reunion with past and current students, staff and families. This celebration highlighted the many and varied achievements of individual people, the milestones the school had reached through the decades, and the positive response to our changing times. Today, we enjoy a diversity of cultures, 21st Century educational practices in teaching and learning and opportunities for students to work towards careers that can take them around the world.

This too can present challenges for everyone. In this respect, it is important that school and home work as partners to nurture and guide every student to select a “growth mindset” that can further develop their individual talents, abilities, and citizenship. ‘Reach for the Stars’ can only be realised when we equip our students with high expectations, an attitude for perseverance of “never give up, keep on going and kia kaha’. Nicky Brell Principal Jurnee (Year (Y Y 8), Tiana (Year (Y Y 7) and Cody (Year (Y Y 7) came third in the local competition and traveled to the national competition in Nelson last month where they came first!

Principal’s Message

Building the capacity of others has been a highlight during 2019.This year I was awarded a ‘Research Sabbatical’ to undertake research in 15 schools throughout New Zealand, with the goal of producing a report for the Educational Leaders website. The purpose of the report was to guide other schools in the implementation of a Visible Learning and Teaching philosophy, to enhance meaningful learner engagement. This challenge was successfully completed, and now as a result of my visits, teachers at Rotorua Intermediate are now networking with other professionals whom I observed, with the purpose of sharing teaching and learning strategies. Future learning opportunities at Rotorua Intermediate will be further enhanced as we transform these new ideas into meaningful classroom practices, building the learning capacity of our Rotorua Intermediate students.

“Leadership is not about me; it’s about investing in the growth of others.” - Ken Blanchard. Garry de Thierry Principal

Our Values: Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Responsibility for your Actions Mission Statement: Rotorua Intermediate enabling progress and achievement within a Collaborative and Innovative Learning community; targeting Personalised and Globally Connected learning experiences, to prepare our learners for an ever-changing world.

2019

has been an action packed and fun filled year at Rotorua intermediate. We offer a wide range of opportunities and experiences for all our students and we had several special events throughout this year. Term one kicked off with our eigt-hour relay that raised funds to purchase new outdoor equipment, students had a blast dressing up and challenging themselves. Our student prefects held a Pink Shirt Day at school to support mental health and organised a rainbow day in support of Christchurch. It was great to see our students showing initiative and getting behind such worthy causes. The annual RIS has Talent evening showcased an amazing variety of our students’ abilities from highland dancing to hip-hop DJaying. Term 3’s focus on wearable arts saw students unleashing their creativity and designing some amazing outfits.

As a kura we proudly celebrate our links to te Ao Maori, our whanau groups are all named after prominent local koromatua. Each of our whanau groups started the year by competing in our schoolwide haka competition and every child in the school took part. Whanau groups also visited each of the marae associated with the koromatua that they are named after. Our school has its own Maori student leader’s forum, Kahui Rangatahi. Worthy of special recognition this year is our school’s kapa haka group who compete at Te Mana Kuratahi, the national primary and intermediate kapa haka competition this term. This is a major achievement, the group practised tirelessly on weekends and holidays to polish their performance. This year our students carried on the proud legacy of academic success at Rotorua Intermediate. Most classes receive weekly Chinese language lessons, this year two students, Sabastian Male and Ella Ravudi, won the Bay of Plenty Chinese Speech Competition in their year groups. Ella also

placed first at the Wairiki Pacifika Speech Competition as did Setaleki Mafileo. Our school spelling bee team did exceptionally well with the team coming first overall and Youzhen Han winning the Year 8 section. We also had teams compete in the Rotomaths and Epro8 events. Another big component of our school year are the Pathways classes. These provide opportunities for students to experience a range of practical skills in various subject areas. Students are made aware of any possible career pathways these skills could lead to, so they are then able to make informed choices regarding possible career opportunities and decisions. A range of subjects including: computer coding, graphic design, music, cooking and technology are enjoyed by all. As part of developing well rounded individuals our school offers many opportunities for students to engage in sports, both inside and outside of school hours. We offer a wide variety of summer and winter sports codes. This year we started a school

rugby academy in conjunction with RBHS, students received specialised training and attended sessions before and after school. All our students took part in swimming at the beginning of the year and in a water safety programme in Term 3. This year our NZAIMS teams did exceptionally well with both our boys’ and girls’ basketball teams placing in the top five, and Francis Lockwood winning the stableford golf. Term 4 sees a focus on developing skills for our school athletics day. We encourage students to participate in class or house organised activities three days per week. Engagement activities this year have been designed by students, activities can vary from talent quests, problem solving and haka competitions to netball, volleyball or multi-sport. Students also facilitate each session and help design the activities. We will be sad when 2019 comes to an end as we will have to say good-bye to an amazing group of Year 8 students. We wish them all the best at high school. We would also like to say nau mai, haere mai, welcome to all the Year 7s who will be joining us in 2020.

Te Kura Tuatahi o Tōte Rā

Principal’s Message

T

he word is getting out there that Sunset Primary School is a school that’s going places.

Principal Eden Chapman is determined that the students at Sunset Primary School get better access to exciting learning opportunities.

“There has been limited access to sports recently and engaging activities like robotics and coding have not been offered. I have accessed funding through the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust (RECT) to employ a co-ordinator to ensure Sunset students get access to exciting extra-curricular opportunities. Part of that funding is set aside for transport and equipment so we can ensure there’s no barrier to our students being involved.” Sunset students entered a robotics competition for the first time.

It’s all happening! It’s been such a pleasure becoming principal at Sunset Primary School in 2019. The staff are enthusiastic, energetic and innovative. The Board of Trustees are asking all the right questions about how they can support teachers and students. And last but definitely not least there are the students! Our students are so keen to learn, to take on challenges and support each other at school. As a school we are in a rebuilding phase. We are about to break ground on an amazing new playground and asphalt bike track, the school is going to be transformed by a new paint job over the Christmas holidays, plans to renovate all classrooms are being drawn up and the Ministry of Education has approved new fencing for the school field and other improvements to the grounds! It’s all happening at Sunset Primary School Tō te Rā! Nāku noa Eden Chapman Principal

Sunset has experienced some real highs this year with sports and cultural events. The school entered a Waka Ama team for the first time in many years and managed to come in runner’s up in the A final and one of their Miniball teams were also runner’s up in their grade.

Bikes - Some lucky Sunset students with brand new bikes donated to the school from frr the Lockwood Group.

Sunset Primary School was featured in the National news just a few weeks ago as they are one of the first schools in New Zealand to offer free lunches for every pupil, every day. Sunset was invited to a meeting with the Prime Minister to hear about this opportunity and the principal is working hard to ensure that lunches will be available from the very first day of 2020. Chapman said that instances of students coming to school without any lunch were rare but he knew whānau were having to make sacrifices to ensure their children had lunch. Now there’s one meal a day that whānau are not having to budget for and that can only be a good thing. Sunset Primary School Tōte Ra ā is proud of its flourishing Rumaki class. The class have a superb kaiako and kaiawhina supporting 27 amazing students in their full immersion setting. The students receive rich and varied learning experiences that develop the whole a ā konga with language, tikanga, wha a ā nau, kapa haka, wairua and mahi toi playing an equal role in their schooling. As part of the Child Equity programme, children at Sunset Primary now have access to the Making a Difference Swim Programme, school holiday programmes, oral language programmes, and school sports teams. The Bike-On Trust is partnering with Council to deliver Bikes in Schools which ensures children have access to learning to ride a bike.

9

The Bike-On Trust has made a contribution towards a class fleet of bikes, helmets and storage. Council is allocating $50,000 towards creating a sealed bike track around the school field, which will be available for community use outside of school time. Council has also partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters to mentor children

at Sunset Primary. Participating staff will be given an hour a week, during work time, to undertake their Big Brother or Big Sister role, mentoring children who are missing an adult role model in their life. With so many exciting things happening at Sunset Primary School, it’s no wonder the school is going places!

Sunset Students with the PM - Manaia Taramai, Priya Raethel and Shadik Tonihi chat with the Rt. Rtt Hon Jacinda Ardern about rolling out lunches in schools.

Competing Aquabots - Mikera Tiopira (9) and Joe Tyrell (8) ready their Aquabot for competition.

Tena koutou katoa, 2019 has been a year of growth and triumph for St Michael’s Catholic School. We pride ourselves on delivering excellent service to both our children and their families as we work together for the success of all tamariki. We have been privileged to welcome over fifty new children into our school this year. St Michael’s is thrilled to be able to provide service to families who are looking for a simpler, calmer solution to primary education and appreciate the personal care our staff take to get to know their children. Sports pursuits, cultural endeavours, academic challenges and growing great christian leaders are our priorities. We are incredibly unique in that we offer a truly holistic approach to the delivery of the curriculum with spiritual formation, gospel values and academic excellence placed at the heart of what we do. We wish to extend a huge thank you to our positive and caring community who support our endeavours and continue to help us realise our greatness. We are excited about another fun year at our great school in 2020. Where all children experience choice, have a voice and are challenged. Kristina Crouch Proud Principal

A

s the tumuaki of Whangamarino School, I see incredible teamwork every day and I would like to thank our tamariki, staff, Board of Trustees, whanau and community members for their contribution to the success of our kura in 2019. Our school is a dynamic, inspiring, dual medium Year 1-8 school set in the heart of Okere Falls, looking over beautiful Lake Rotoiti. We offer an educational experience designed to inspire individual achievement, strong personal values and confidence for life. Whangamarino gives our tamariki the opportunity to learn in either English or

Maori (total immersion) medium, in classes that have low numbers. We welcome all students passionate about learning Te Reo Maori regardless of their Te Reo Maori ability. We embrace our unique Ngati Pikiao identity which stems from years of being part of the local communities of Mourea, Otaramarae and Okere Falls. The staff are dedicated, committed and professional, work hard and have a passion for teaching. Whangamarino School is very much a family orientated school and we believe in our values of Aroha, Manaakitanga and Whakawhanaungatanga. Our

everyday philosophies, values, classroom programmes and life in general come from these values. We have had so many highlights this year such as: having our beautiful new Multi Sports Turf installed, various camps including our whole school camp to Ohope, Matariki Festival of Learning, Wearable Arts, school newspaper, art auction, dressing up as your favourite book character day, and tree planting with our local Trusts to name a few. The announcement that our kura has been selected to receive free healthy lunches for the next 2 years was another highlight for us.

Whangamarino School is not seen as a 9 to 5 sort of place and for those of us here, we love it because it is a happy, nurturing environment. Tamariki, teachers, support staff, parents, whanau and community all work together to ensure our tamariki become highly successful motivated learners who are ready to move confidently in an ever changing world. Going forward, we wish our Year 8 tamariki the very best at High School and Wharekura and we look forward to another exciting year of new learning for all in 2020.
