SOUTHEY NISSAN

NISSAN’S NEW NP300 PICKUP A BRAND NEW MODEL FULL OF IMPRESSIVE FEATURES Nissan’s New NP300 pick up has just arrived at Southey Nissan, impressing Southey Nissan Sales Consultant Tom Porter with its outstanding features. Nissan has been building pickups for 80 years. Its most recent model, the D40, has been in production for the past ten years and is still the third biggest selling new model.

However, the NP300 is a completely new design.

compared to the previous 10 litres. It has more grunt, towing up to 3.5 tonne, and there is a seamless delivery of extra power with no tubo lag whatsoever, Tom says.

The two wheel drive and four wheel drive versions are available in single and twin turbo, with a narrow or wide body. The first arrivals at Southeys are diesel, with petrol versions available in a few months time.

He expects the NP300 will be popular with farmers, businesses and the general public because it is equally good at being a work horse or an SUV style family vehicle.

The NP300 is significantly more economical at 7 litres per hundred kilometres,

The new model is a very comfortable ride with five link suspension, delivering

superior levels of vehicle handling, and reduced noise vibration. Tom is particularly impressed with the addition of a power sliding rear window which gives direct access to the back as well as creating a sense of openness and bringing the outside in.

Anyone interested in finding out more and inspecting the NP300 should contact Tom at Southey Nissan, corner Dixon and Park Streets, Masterton Phone (06) 378 2543

The servicing intervals for diesel variants are 12 months or 20,000 kilometres, and includes a clever onboard oil degradation

TFM TRACTORS

Graham and Teresa McClymont, of G T Environmental Services, have more than 20 years experience in the field of waste water and fresh water systems. Being locally owned and operated means they know Wairarapa conditions, tradesmen and requirements from local councils. Graham holds a B and C Waste Water Certificate. With this qualification Graham is deemed to be an approved designer of septic systems in the Wairarapa. This means he is able to produce the consent paperwork for new builds and any required for additions and upgrades.

Dealer Principal, John Tulloch

G T Environmental Services Ltd is completely independent so can be flexible in what sort of system can be put forward for consent. This can often prove to be cheaper and for the client, and more site specific.

MEET THE TEAM

FULL SALES, SERVICE AND PARTS FOR ALL FARMING OPERATIONS TFM Tractors is the recognised dealer for Tulloch Farm Machines in the Wairarapa region. In order to provide the best possible service to the rural community TFM Tractors offer full sales, service and parts facilities operated by a diligent team.

Similarly there are a variety of water tanks to choose, from concrete and plastic, with various colours and sizes, although all buried water tanks must be concrete. Collected rain water can pose some issues for users in how clean it actually is. These problems can be solved with filter systems supplied and installed by GT. Water recycling systems are another option for those who want to make the most of every litre they use. These are usually best fitted in a new build.

All tractors and farm equipment will experience down time. When this happens it’s nice to know you have a great back up service.

Jim Grove Big Line Equipment Technician

GT Environmental Services cleans septic systems, and has its own “suck truck”, the POOE2, which goes Wairarapa wide. Call Teresa to book it. It is recommended to clean septic systems every three to five years, depending on size and family use. We can also upgrade systems that are struggling. Older systems are often too small for modern family life and the field drains don’t cope with high water and chemical use. A big no no for septic owners anyway, but issues with your existing system are made worse by contaminated or under-performing field drains.

Jamie Pratt, Service Manager Bill Cook and Oliver Bertram are our specialised tractor Mechanics and Apprentice John Morris.

Sales Manager Cyril Butler (Shorty)

There are so many options available, so talk to Graham if you are intending to build in the country or have problems with your existing tank.

SALES - TFM Tractors offers a full range of equipment for all farming operations, dairy, sheep and beef, horticulture, vineyard and cropping. In addition to this TFM Tractors stocks good used equipment. Sales Manager Cyril Butler (Shorty) joined TFM Tractors in 2010 with a wealth of experience from the agricultural equipment industry, which enables him to prescribe the right piece of equipment for the task at hand.

• BORE YIELD TESTS “They have the gear, they’ve trained to do the job, they’re qualified to do it properly, & they know what they’re doing”

The business was set up by Brady Bingham three years ago, to provide a much needed specialist service that was lacking within the Wairarapa, which was to wash residential, rural and commercial properties Wairarapa wide. Your house is one of your biggest assets. If left untreated, moss, mould and dirt will build up and damage the paint work, leading to expensive repairs and potentially a new paint job. While many people think of house washing as a spring or summer activity, winter is in fact the best time to wash a property as the grime has been softened by the regular rain, Brady says.

• TOW LINE

ce tenan Main / n llatio Insta

From left: Richard Barlow is the face of Property Wash Wairarapa

Property Wash uses a soft wash process that doesn’t damage the exterior, starting with a rinse using a low pressure commercial quality water blaster with a wide span nozzle. Once the property has been wet down, a specially formulated high foaming detergent is applied, followed by a thorough brushing of the exterior surfaces from the top of the gutter line down to the foundations.

The house is then given a final rinse to remove all dust, dirt, spider webs and road grime. The low pressure soft wash makes a house look fantastic afterwards, and gives your house that much desired curb appeal that your neighbours are sure to be jealous of. Property Wash Wairarapa provides prepaint/pre-sale washes. They also wash decks, drive-ways, gutters, roof cleaning/ moss and mould treatments and after a wash they can also spray for spiders! All jobs are quoted as a fixed price before the job is done, so there are never any nasty surprises, there is a guarantee for all workmanship, with full insurance. Brady started the business when he returned home to Greytown in 2012, taking a break from his career in the IT industry in Auckland. “I needed a change and saw an opportunity as there were no major providers of this kind of washing service in the Wairarapa region. After doing this for around six months I decided it was a business with a long term future.” These days, Richard Barlow is the face and sole operator of Property Wash Wairarapa, with Brady running the backend finances and marketing (with help from Xero).

TARATAHI AGRICULTURAL TRAINING CENTRE

INDUSTRIAL BUILDING NEEDS

Hannah McColl (Left) from Taranaki completed the Taster Course last October and was inspired to come back to Taratahi this year

GIVING STUDENTS A TASTE FOR A FARMING CAREER

Taratahi Agricultural Training Centre is holding another of its popular Taster Courses from Monday 6 to Thursday 9 July.

The cost is only $100 for the four days which covers all accommodation, meals and activities, making it a very good deal.

The courses are designed for students aged 16 to 18, to give them a taste of what it would be like to live at Taratahi, and the things they will be learning.

Spaces are limited to 50 students who come from all over New Zealand, amongst them 17 year-old Hannah McColl.

They visit the Taratahi farms where they will learn as students, and get to experience sheep, beef, dairy and deer operations. Over the four days, the students try out a range of activities including chainsaws, quads, tractors, fencing, stock handling, dairy (when in season), and theory.

C&F Industries has been leading the industry in steel frame agricultural and industrial buildings in Wairarapa for many years. Over the years the company has undertaken a wide variety of steel frame building and engineering work for a range of markets including dairy, sheep and beef, wineries and light industrial. Their projects include: dairy sheds and feed pads, woolsheds and covered yards, hay sheds, implement sheds and storage sheds. The majority of these projects are purpose designed and built and incorporate steel, timber, roll formed sections and poles for the most cost effective design. C&F also specialise in farm bridges and have built several bridges ranging in length from 6 to 30m with exceptional results. C&F have also built several steel framed shells for houses. Pat Finn, owner/manager, is a Licensed Building Practitioner in the area of Design and is valued for his ability to design new buildings and modify existing ones to meet specific client requirements. Pat also has become known for designing dairy sheds and feed pads to cater for the larger dairy herds of today.

Sessions are held by the actual tutors whom they would learn from on campus with five to eight students per tutor. Students get three hearty meals a day, served in the dining room on campus - very good comments are always received about the food! Evenings are supervised by Taratahi staff with organised activities like bowling and sport in the campus gym. Accommodation is in single rooms (one student per room).

“I grew up on a farm in Taranaki and knew I wanted to go sheep farming after school. “My friend had been talking to Taratahi about enrolling and encouraged me to join her. I wasn’t sure what Taratahi was about. So I enrolled in the Taster Course on the Masterton campus that was held last October. “The Taster Course gave me a good idea of what I was going to learn and do. We did a bit of everything. I remember the chainsaw tutorial and riding the quad bikes. We were also taken out to Koromiko farm to see the operations there. I enrolled in the January intake, and love it here.” Forty eight students attended the last Taster course in April with 18 out of the 19 students surveyed, saying they would recommend the experience to their friends.

TREECRAFT

SPECIALIST TREE CARE SERVICES THROUGHOUT THE WAIRARAPA Treecraft Arboriculture are now in their second year of business in the Wairarapa, offering specialist tree care services throughout the region. This last year has been a busy time, and the business and clientele have steadily grown. This increase has led to the purchase of a high output wood chipper, which means they are able to offer a more efficient service, as well as recycling the trees as mulch for gardens. Treecraft offers tree removal, pruning, crown reduction/reshaping, planting, storm damage and consultancy services. There is no job too big, small or challenging for Treecraft - they will find a solution. They can tackle any size project from a single specimen tree, through to log recovery, shelterbelt and small woodlot removal projects. Wairarapa is a unique place for an arborist to work. As well as remnant native forest blocks, there are a large number of mature, exotic trees, many of which have historical significance. These trees require a specialist understanding of tree health

as well as technical expertise in any work that is carried out on them. Nick uses his knowledge of tree health and biology to manage trees in a way that is both sympathetic to trees, and meets customers’ goals or requirements. Nick likes creating lasting relationships with his clients. Rather than offering a “here and now solution”, his goal is to work together with his customers to look at gardens and landscapes as a long term project, and plan work accordingly. A large amount of his work comes as a result of initiating a management plan for upcoming years, depending on his customer’s needs and goals. As well as being a qualified arborist, Nick is a registered Quantified Tree Risk Assessor, and can provide arboricultural reports on tree health, hazard assessments and risk analysis. Nick is qualified, insured, and a member of the NZ Arboricultural Association. Contact Nick today for a free, no obligation quote, and experience his passion for trees first hand.

LINDSAY IRRIGATION

AIMING FOR WHOLE SYSTEM EFFICIENCY Hayden and Jessie Dorman are in search of practices which will ensure the long term sustainability of their farm. This 2014/15 season they have begun to utilise their Growsmart Precision VRI technology and the EM maps (by Agri Optics NZ Ltd) of their farm in order to demonstrate environmental efficiency and improve soil health. Their 640m centre pivot with Growsmart Precision VRI installed is estimated to save them an average of $148 in power per application while decreasing water usage by 3,300 m3 in comparison to applying a uniform application rate. Alongside this technology the Dormans also employ Hydroservices to carry out weekly soil moisture readings on their farm and are involved in a joint NIWA and ECAN trial which involves a weather station and a soil moisture sensor that provides continuous moisture data. Soil moisture monitoring locations were chosen using the farm EM map to identify zones of similar soil type. The operation on Riverstone farm totals 180 hectares and is serviced by a single centre pivot with Growsmart Precision VRI installed, irrigating 136 hectares. As progressive farmers, they would like to reduce their water usage and improve overall efficiency by aligning soil moisture data with their EM map and using these tools to guide variable rate irrigation application primarily during the shoulders of the season. The Dormans already utilise their Growsmart Precision VRI technology to avoid watering over laneways saving water, pumping costs and laneway/track maintenance costs. . Furthermore this season they have been investigating further utilising the variable rate irrigation technology through dividing their farm into three management zones and delaying water application to those soils with a greater ability to retain water.

Hayden Dorman relishes the benefits he gets with his Growsmart Precision VRI and EM Mapping This is expected to decrease their water usage and pumping costs by an overall total of 3,300,000 litres and $148 respectively per application. As a previous ECAN employee, Jessie is well aware of what future nitrate leaching restrictions will involve. Soil moisture monitoring on the farm shows the Dormans when drainage events are occurring through the soil profile and allows them to modify their irrigation accordingly to minimise leaching. Data from the NIWA lysimeter also allows them to see leachate collected and this has been recorded as minimal over the 2014/15 irrigation season. In upcoming seasons the Dormans’ goal is to monitor their soil moisture data and use this to guide their Growsmart Precision VRI irrigation schedule combined with weather forecasts, times of the season and pasture cover. Growsmart Precision VRI is compatible with most centre pivot and lateral irrigators, the technology can be installed on new systems or as a retro-fit to existing systems. For more information contact your local Zimmatic irrigation dealer or visit www.growsmartprecisionvri.co.nz for more information.

NZ’s newest rural real estate company NZR is a real estate company that has been established by three of the most experienced and capable rural real estate agents in the country. Having worked within corporate real estate companies for many years, Blair Stevens, Peter Barnett and Jamie Proude all felt they could offer their clients a better service if they set up their own business.

SIX YEARS ON AND BRIAN IS STILL SEEING GREEN The Growsmart® Precision VRI system installed on Brian and Jo Bosch’s dairy farm in the South Wairarapa has been saving them precious water and dollars since it was first installed in 2008. The couple use the intelligent system to avoid watering the tracks, ponds and drains underneath their Zimmatic™ centre-pivot. The water saved by avoiding these areas is diverted to other areas of the farm, increasing their irrigated land area by approximately 10%. And after over six years of using the technology he’s pretty happy about the low maintenance requirements of the system hardware, “It’s just worked!” The Bosch’s are not alone in the great results achieved using variable rate irrigation. Trials show savings of up to 27% on dairy and cropping farms are realistically achievable. Why? Because Precision VRI controls every individual sprinkler allowing you to irrigate where it is needed. The world of farming financials is changing with Xero in particular bringing it into real time. This offers great opportunities for those involved in the dairy industry to get ahead. Chartered accountant David Osborne uses Xero for his own dairy farms. He believes one of its greatest advantages is that it allows him to have a real time relationship with his clients. “Through Xero, or Rural Cash Manager, I can interact with their business on an ongoing basis – stocking rates, returns on feed, grass versus supplements and so on.

Once Reuben has determined the requirements and site information, Jenine and Cathrine will modify a plan or draw up a

“Because I know the dairy industry both as a farmer and accountant I can act as a sounding board for ideas, and suggest things they should be thinking about.” And because he is doing the numbers on his own operations he knows what they mean. And while the numbers are important for your business, you as a client are not just a number. David takes a personal approach to his clients and he can because he is a small personalised practice. At this time of year, dairy farms have already set up their budgets for the coming season. Using Xero or Rural Cash Manager, this can be compared to real time inputs, David says. Having real time accounting also builds a stronger relationship with your bank. David points out that he is working with clients to assist them to grow and progress. They are usually aspirational, wanting to move up the ladder from contract milking to sharemilking to equity ownership or owning their own farm.

Working in real time allows them to take advantage of opportunities as they arrive, David says. “For example, if you are a contract or sharemilker, with a depressed market for farm machinery at the moment, it could be a good time to purchase new equipment.” With his farming experience and knowledge, David is able to offer expertise on production and pasture budgets, employment issues, environmental issues, TAF and succession planning. “I’ve been through parental pathways myself. It can be quite a complicated situation.” David grew up on a dairy farm at Kahutara. He operates two South Wairarapa dairy farms, as well as two run-off properties for beef bulls and supplement. David gives regular updates on Wairarapa farming for the rural radio programme Rural Farm Report. He’s also very involved in local farming groups such as the DairyNZ Discussion Groups as well as a member of the Accountants Local Leadership team and on the board of the Chamber of Commerce. Robert Royle has joined the firm. Robert has an accounting degree and is studying toward his CA qualification. RAYMOND HICKS CONTRACTING OFFERS A reputation for providing a consistent supplies animal feeds for poultry, pigs, calves, dairy, sheep, beef, pheasant, rabbits and quality product has lead to significant AN ECONOMICAL SILAGE ALTERNATIVE and horses, and even supplies Giraffe Nuts growth for Carterton business Sharpes

If you are a dairy farmer looking to cut costs because of a low payout, Raymond Hicks Contracting offers a money saving alternative to the common Forage Harvestor.

The business also has a Subsoiler which rids pasture of compaction, loosening up soil up to half a metre deep.

The Carterton based agricultural contractor has the Wairarapa only two Loader Wagons. These make silage for up to half the cost and have the added benefit of not compacting the soil.

The business specialises in small, conventional bales of wrapped silage and hay for lifestyle blocks. These are easier to handle, great for horses, sheep and cows, can be stored outside, and allow the flexibility to sell all or a portion of a crop.

Anyone interested can contact Raymond with early bookings advised.

Raymond Hicks Contracting also offers fertiliser spreading and fencing services.

The business also has the Wairarapa’s only Rock Picker which digs up rocks to make more pasture available for silage.

For more information Phone 0800 646422 (0800 MINIBALES) or 027 203 9530 or visit www.bales.co.nz

Most contractors won’t go on to land which is too rocky for fear of damaging their machinery, Raymond says. “The Rock Picker makes a beautiful job. It is also excellent for maize crops as means the maize stubble can be cut closer to the ground.”

Sharpes Stock Feeds has been in business for 110 years now and till recently most of its customers were in the Wairarapa. Founded by John Sharpe in Petone in 1899, Sharpes Stock Feeds was bought by Alan Orsborn in 1937 and continues to be run by the Orsborn family today. Alan’s son Alastair continues to work in the business and has been joined by his son Sam, who was an agricultural consultant for local business Baker & Associates, and daughter-in-law Sara, who was running who own marketing and events business, and recently Sam and Sara have setup another business, MyTrucking, an online Transport Management programme. GARRITY BROS 1990 LTD

MODERN VEHICLES AND EXPERIENCED DRIVERS MEETING FARMERS NEEDS IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Garrity Bros has been part of the Wairarapa farming scene for 122 years and carting bobby calves continuously since 1938. We now collect bobby calves all the way from Pirinoa to Dannevirke during the season. To commemorate the firm being 100 years old, we tracked down and restored two of the firms original trucks and since have gone on and restored another five trucks, a top dresser and stock crates to preserve the history. While we are proud of our history, we are very enthusiastic about the future. That is why we have invested in the latest fertiliser spreading truck and trailer units fitted with GPS and Tracmap capabilities, as well as high productivity vehicles (HPV) to provide increased efficiency in livestock cartage. We run four truck and trailer fertiliser spreading units so that we can provide a prompt and efficient service. With the Tracmap capabilities, we are able to provide proof of fertiliser placement to those customers who require it. Farming has become more intense with clients requiring an immediate response to any job and we

are capable of meeting these requirements with our fleet. Our greatest assets are our drivers, some of whom have been with us for many years. So farmers are dealing with the same drivers regularly – on occasions farmers have asked the driver where he has last left off with his spreading. Cousins Rod and Ian Garrity starting working for the family firm in 1973 and purchased the firm in 1989, which at the time consisted of five trucks. We now run a fleet of 12 working trucks and trailers, made up of two designated stock units driven by Rod Garrity and Blake Garrity. We have four spreader units driven by Kevin Lett, Jade Garrity, Keith Harpham and Lance McHardy who first joined the firm back in 1965 and is now working with the fourth generation of Garritys. We run five general purpose trucks which can do silage, hay, metal, livestock and bulk commodities which are driven by Tim Phillips and David Cadwallader. We also have a small truck for the smaller livestock jobs and local pickups.

TE WANANGA O AOTEAROA

CERTIFICATE IN FOUNDATIONAL FOREST HARVESTING LEVEL 3 Love being in the outdoors? Not afraid of a solid day’s work? You might want to think about a career in forest harvesting. Applications are now open for the Forest Harvesting course held in Upper Hutt. Over 36 weeks students will get important training in the rugged but rewarding industry of forestry. If you are hard-working, mentally tough and don’t mind a bit of sweat and dirt - Te Wananga o Aotearoa would like to hear from you. Kerry Hayes, Forestry tutor, is dedicated to seeing his tauira (students) succeed. He enjoys watching them make new friends, keeping fit and learning skills that can lead to earning a good pay - all at the same time.

ONFARMSAFETY NEW ZEALAND NOW HAS A DEDICATED EAST COAST CONSULTANT. It’s no secret that Health and Safety is one of the most hotly discussed topics around rural areas at the moment, and with demand for quality Health and Safety advice growing daily OnFarmSafety New Zealand have recognised this and have recently expanded their business to include a full time consultant based on the East Coast. Bronwyn Muir, Managing Director said “We have consultants based in the South Island, Waikato, Taranaki and the Kapiti Coast and client demand for our services on the East Coast has grown so much recently that it was necessary to have a consultant dedicated to servicing East Coast clients, we are happy to welcome Bridget Kershaw to the OnFarmSafety team.” Bridget is from a strong farming background having grown up on a Sheep, Beef and Cropping farm in the South Wairarapa and still has involvement with the family farm helping to run the Sheep and Beef aspect of it, as well as assisting with the Office Management. “I have worked on a local Dairy Farm as well as for Seminis Vegetable Seeds. This varied experience is beneficial when dealing with a wide range of farming clients.”

OnFarmSafety are unique in their approach as they focus on spending time getting to know the client, their staff and the way they operate their business on a daily basis. A full Health and Safety assessment is carried out to allow them to tailor a Health and Safety Management System specific to each client, there is no generic carbon copy approach. Bridget will take you through the essential elements such as Health & Safety Policies, Hazard identification, Risk assessment, Hazardous Substances and chemical handling as well as staff induction and vehicle maintenance processes. Most businesses are already talking about health and safety and the impending changes to the Health & Safety Act, but many just don’t know what is required or where to start, “We recommend having a formal written plan, this will give you the documentation and evidence you need to make that plan successful, relevant and workable “said Bridget. Give Bridget a call today to book a free, no obligation initial consultation.

“I invite you to learn the skills employers are looking for, while enjoying the great outdoors every day.” However, he also cautions that this can be dangerous work. An important part of the course is the health and safety practices to ensure a safe future in any forestry workplace.

If you think you’re up to the challenge, call us NOW. Classes start in July. Spaces are limited. Enrol today!

To successfully enrol, all students will need to pass a drug test.

Programmes are subject to student numbers and confirmation.

FARM JOBS THE BREAD & BUTTER OF MASTER ROADS

While Master Roads name might suggest its chief work is the construction of roads, in fact the vast majority its clients are rural.

It does build and maintain roads, but these are primarily on farms. Another important part of its business is effluent ponds for which it is qualified to design as well as construct. Master Roads lays the foundations and platforms for dairy sheds and houses, constructs farm races and drains, maintains farm tracks, delivers top soil, lime and metal, and has become well known for constructing horse arenas and stock underpasses. Tony Heyward is Managing Director while Foreman Doug Lawrence prices and supervises jobs as well as being an experienced grader operator. Master Roads has 12 staff and the big gear to get a job done, with a range of graders, rollers, excavators and trucks.

LOGAN GOLD WALSH LAWYERS LIMITED THE FARM SUCCESSION CHALLENGE

Given that the average age of farm owners is 58-65 years this topic is an issue across the country. Over the next few years there will be a large number of farming businesses supposedly changing hands. Two of our major banks have estimated that over the next 10-15 years the farming industry will require between $50 - $65 billion dollars for succession and development and, that they will only be able to fund up to two thirds or so of that. Whilst the trading banks estimate there is $800 million or so that their customers might currently want to invest in farming, and while dairy farmers have the prospect of Fonterra’s Equity Fund there is still going to be an obvious large shortfall. Yet another hurdle for those facing the farm succession challenge. In my experience vendor finance, when available, will be in the realms of at least 60% and sometimes much more. So finance will sit alongside the other major issues that need to be faced in addressing farm succession within the family. As with many things in life there are a number of ways to address farm succession. Some advisors favour one approach that they have always used and are tied to. Others are certain from the outset what entities should be used and the relationships that need to be created between them. Others, including myself, would not approach any farm succession event with any such preconceived ideas and prefer to see the outcome of the process dictate such matters. The process needs to include consideration of: •

Who are the relevant parties and what are their relationships?

What are the possible takeover and operating options- relative to assets, finance, appropriate personnel and proposed modus operandi? On occasions an appropriate questionnaire completed by family

members, possibly initially on a confidential basis, can be an effective way of collecting the relevant information and determining the further questions that need to be asked and issues that need to be addressed. •

Which of the same are viable alternatives that deserve further development and consideration? A case of option generation ,full consideration and determination.

Will one or more of the options meet the essential requirements of : –

leaving the parents as comfortably as can be expected given the circumstances that prevail?

– the family member(s) who will (albeit eventually) take over being viable and having true potential to succeed ? – the remaining family members being treated equitably? – overall reality testing? – use of appropriate structures and drafting of appropriate documentation including any trust deeds, company shareholder agreements, wills, enduring powers of attorney, trust memorandum of wishes and relationship property agreements deemed prudent for the circumstances?

The lawyer and accountant engaged by the parents need to be mindful of the fact that the parents are the instructing clients and that it is their welfare and interests that should be the first priority for them. The child/children taking over the farm need to have a reasonable chance to be successful and any remaining children need to be treated fairly if the plan is to work for all. Other advisors such as rural farm consultants should also be availed of to provide, for example, any required

guidance in farming direction and practice and should be availed of where relevant and worthwhile. A team approach is essential and a facilitator can also often add value. Farm succession is a process more than an event and it needs to be undertaken with good judgment, practical advice, understanding of and empathy with all family members. FAMILIAR FACES STILL TO BE FOUND AT NORWOOD FARM MACHINERY CENTRE AS IT MOVES INTO THE FUTURE Norwood Farm Machinery Centre (NFMC) has been a part of the Wairarapa farming community for almost 70 years. In fact the original Carterton branch, established in 1948, was just the third in New Zealand. In 2008 Norwood Farm Machinery Centre relocated to its present location on the corner of High Street and Ngaumutawa Road in Masterton where it sells and services leading brands like Kubota, New Holland, Lemken, Vaderstad & Fella to name a few. Along with this state-of-the-art machinery, they still service everything from the Massey Ferguson tractors CB Norwood manufactured seven decades ago, to ride on mowers and chainsaws. NFMC has many of the familiar faces customers have gotten to know over the years. Their two Sales Representatives are Aaron George and Peter Pope. Aaron sells the large scale tractors and machinery. He has been with the branch for 20 years, originally starting in the Parts Department. Peter Pope is NFMC’s “lifestyle salesman extraordinaire” with 30 years’ experience. Previously a service technician, Peter has a huge store of background knowledge. NFMC has a highly experienced Parts Department

A new face at Norwood Farm Machinery Centre (NFMC) is that of Janoah Smith. Janoah has been appointed as Regional Manager, covering both the Masterton and Palmerston North branches, splitting his time between the two.

team of Mike McArley, Julian MacKenzie, and David Deller.

Janoah has been with the company for the past eight years, fulfilling various roles including Sales before becoming Branch Manager of the Palmerston North branch.

They have a comprehensive selection of parts onsite, and will go out of their way to source anything not held in stock. “It’s a huge bonus being only a two hour round trip from our National Parts Warehouse,” says Mike.

Previous Masterton Branch Manager Graeme Garrity is now the Territory Manager for Kubota Construction Equipment and continues his relationship with the Masterton branch in this position.

The NFMC Service Department employs a team of highly skilled technicians, overseen by Service Manager Damian Karena, and Foreman Brian (Morty) Mortensen. “We service everything we sell, and our talented and diverse team of technicians means we can also cater to all kinds of other machinery and equipment,” says Damian, who has headed up the service team for the last 14 months. Morty has been with NFMC for 30 years, on and off, returning again in March last year. There is not much about tractors that he doesn’t know, and he ensures all work completed by the Service Department is of the highest standard. The Service Department has three workshops – agricultural machinery, engineering, and lifestyle. The main ag-machinery workshop comprises

Gareth van Dalen, Todd Chapman and David Le Fleming. Gareth and Todd have many years of experience behind them while David has just completed his apprenticeship and is currently in Australia gaining more experience. The engineering workshop comprises father and son team of Danny Rekke and Kris Rekke. David Main and Brian Leete focus on lifestyle and lawn care equipment in the lifestyle workshop. The Service Department does a lot of field work, with dedicated service vehicles on call 24/7. Last but not least is the Administration and Reception team of mother and daughter Leanne Wilson and Janine Osborne. Leanne first joined the branch 25 years ago and Janine 10 years ago. Often the first faces customers make contact with, they are the hub and glue of Norwood Farm Machinery Centre Masterton.

Janoah is not planning any radical changes to the Masterton branch. Rather, his vision is to support the staff and customers by delivering the same high standard of service they already have a reputation for in the local farming community. Chelsey Mills isn’t a new face at NFMC, joining Administration five years ago. However, she has been appointed as After Sales Manager. This recently established position involves ensuring customers enjoy a high level of service after they have taken delivery of tractors and machinery, and ensuring a smooth operation of the service and parts portion of the business. Chelsey can often be found out in the field talking to farmers about their needs and how NFMC can ensure they get maximum benefit from the money they have invested in new machinery.
