FOOD SAFETY
Whanganui food safety consultant Roy Biggs was heavily involved in the poultry industry and government joint strategy that changed New Zealand’s reputation as “the campylobacter capital of the world”.
Biggs is an award-winning food technology expert who worked in the poultry industry for Tegel Foods for 19 years before “retiring” and setting up on his own. “There has been a huge amount of change for the good,” Biggs said. “There is recognition by senior management in all the food industry that the best way of protecting your brand is making sure you don’t hurt people when they’re eating your product.
Internationally recognised food safety consultant Are you having food safety or spoilage problems Do you want an efficiency check on your process Are you having problems with your RMP or custom FCP Do you need a RMP or custom Food Control Plan Do you need to document something for NZFS or MPI We can help.
“I’m very proud of the campylobacter strategy we developed. There’s a lot less campylobacter from poultry than there used to be. Nine thousand fewer people a year are getting sick. “Salmonella on chicken is down from a baseline of 17 per cent in 1996 to an annual average of less than 0.2 per cent for the last five years. It’s due to hard work by a lot of people.” Biggs said the growth of social media had also had an impact on the food industry. “It’s so easy now for people to say what’s happened to them and for the message to spread. It’s a very powerful way of expressing yourself.” Biggs began his career in the United Kingdom, working in the dairy and salmon processing industries. A “mid-life crisis” when he was in his 40s saw Biggs and his family move to New Zealand.
After working for a short time as an immigration consultant in Whanganui, Biggs was employed by Tegel and soon became the company’s head technical manager. “I was involved in negotiations with the Government and major customers and in overseas marketing activity so we could sell raw chicken to Australia. That took seven years. “I’m still contracted to Tegel and other major poultry companies are also clients. I’ve also worked for pasta, pate, honey and cleaning products companies.” Biggs has clients in Auckland, Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and the United Kingdom. He also has one client in Whanganui and says he would like to help other local businesses with risk management programmes and custom food control plans. The International Association for Food Protection (IAFP) has recognised Biggs’ commitment to excellence in food safety with its 2018 International Leadership Award. The award will be presented in Salt Lake City, Utah, in July. He won the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology’s JC Andrews Award in 2017. The award recognises institute members who have made a substantial contribution to science and technology and leadership in the food industry. Biggs said the food industry was “great to be in”. “I’ve just been really lucky,” he said. “I’ve been in the right place at the right time with the right skills.”

Safe water fast Tuesday, May 29, 2018
Hidden killers are lurking in Whanganui district water tanks, prompting a warning to keep tanks maintained and clean. Richard Campbell has come across a number of tank horror stories since he and his wife Anna started up SafeH20 in Wanganui last year. Danny and Julie Perkins noticed soon after moving to their Turakina Valley property four years ago that the whole family was getting sick.
“All five of us were sick,” Mrs Perkins recalls, “we just couldn’t shake it”. Symptoms included vomiting and diarrhoea, and when they persisted for more than two weeks, the family started to suspect their water supply. “There was no funny taste, and the water wasn’t brown”, says Mrs Perkins, “but we decided to start boiling the water to see if it made a difference”. The symptoms went away, and the family kept on boiling their drinking water - especially for the three children and visitors, who inevitably got sick if they drank the tap water. “It just became routine to boil the water,” says Mrs Perkins. “I would always have several containers on my kitchen bench that I poured the boiled water into to let it cool, and we just used that for drinking and cooking.” Richard Campbell says “The challenge with rural tanks is that over time, sediment from sprays, chemicals, ash, dust, animal and bird droppings, dead rodents, birds and vegetative matter forms a dense layer on the base of the tank. This sediment is a breeding ground and food source for potentially harmful bacteria that can make users of the water supply extremely unwell.” “There are so many misconceptions out there. For example, many people think that because they have a filter, the tank doesn’t need cleaning. However, they don’t realise that sediment actually stops the filter working, meaning whatever is in your tank, such as pesticides, nitrates, giardia, campylobacter, E.coli and salmonella, will come straight out of your tap.” The danger lies not only in drinking the water; even showering or washing your hands in contaminated
water can be harmful. While healthy adults in their prime can build up certain immunity to the bacteria, children, the elderly, and those with a compromised immune system are especially at risk. The Safe H2O Nano Filtration Unit has been specifically designed to clean and filter rain and bore water tanks. Anna Campbell explains “We remove the sediment through external vacuum and then filter the existing tank water through our unit. The unit processes 20,000 litres an hour and removes all particles greater than 0.001 micron. All sediment and pathogens are removed while all the water and trace minerals are retained.”
Keeping our children safe Car Seats
It’s safer to wait till you’re 148 - kids are safer in a child restraint until they’re 148cm tall. For children 0-14 years, one of the leading causes of injury involves children as passengers in motor vehicles, with Mrs Perkins saw the before and after photos about 18 deaths a year and the equivalent published on Facebook after the Campbells had of one classroom-full (26) of children cleaned out another local family’s tank and thought “our water could never be as bad as that.” admitted to hospital every month. The Perkins had considered having their tank Studies show that child restraints cleaned several times, but had always hesitated can significantly reduce the risk of because of the cost of replacing the water. The hospitalisation and death when used system employed by Safe H2O uses a mobile correctly. filtration unit to purify and retain the existing water, Below is useful information for injury which was the deciding factor for the Perkins. prevention professionals, parents and “We wouldn’t have to pump thousands of litres of caregivers to prevent and raise awareness our untreated bore water back into our tanks, which on this injury issue. would have cost us a lot in electricity and may have been contaminated anyway.”
Mrs Perkins remembers looking on in shock as Richard Campbell siphoned out litre after litre of black water from their water tanks. “I couldn’t believe it; I thought, ‘what am I doing to my family?’” After having their tanks cleaned, the family have gone back to drinking tap water, and have had no further symptoms. “Water has always been first choice in our house; I feel so much better knowing my children can safely drink the tap water now,” says Mrs Perkins. Richard says that Kiwis can be nonchalant about tank cleaning. One of his aims this year is to get people in Whanganui thinking more carefully about the health and quality of the water that they’re using. For more information visit safeh2o.co.nz

Protecting yourself against scams There are so many scams – how do I spot one? The commonest scams include emails asking you to send money to a friend or organisation, letters saying you’ve won a prize, or calls or visitors saying your computer needs fixing or your house needs painting. They’re run by people trying to steal money or get your information. If a stranger tries to sell you something, beware. If an offer sounds too good to be true, or sounds weird, it’s almost certainly a scam. A bank or Inland Revenue will never contact you to ask you to confirm your password, credit card or account details. How can I protect myself? Scammers can sound very plausible. So it’s best not to give any information about yourself to strangers – especially on the phone, at your door, or on your computer. Put the phone down, close your door, or delete the email. Genuine businesses won’t put pressure on you. They’ll be happy to prove who they are. They’ll let you speak to a manager, and they’ll give you time to consider what you want to do. Check with your relatives or friends if you’re not sure whether something’s a scam.

Blue light is all around us. It is emitted by the sun and artificial light sources. Be aware of over-exposure to this type of light as it can be harmful to the eyes. The Risk Of UV The risk of damage to the eyes from UV light has increased due to ozone depletion in the atmosphere. Your eyes can become irritated if not protected. You may also put yourself at increased risk of premature ageing of the eyes and other diseases such as cataracts and skin cancer on the eyelids.

details and colours. Good Blue light (blue-turquoise part) is essential for overall well-being. It is necessary for regulation of the sleep/ wake cycles, mood and cognitive performances. But light can also be the cause of premature eye ageing. Blue-violet light was recently identified as being harmful to retinal cells. Causing longterm damage to our eyes, it can accelerate the onset of age related Macular Degeneration (AMD). Blue-violet light increases the risk of retinal damage.
Our eyes are exposed to UV every day, whatever the conditions. Up to 40% of UV exposure occurs outside of direct sunlight, and it comes from reflections off buildings, glass, water, the sky, the ground, and even off the back of the surface of your lens if they are not treated with UV protection.
Cumulative exposure to blue-violet light has a double effect:
Solution - Wearing lenses with UV protection helps shield your eyes from ultra-violet radiation. As well as sunglasses, you can also opt for clear lenses which also protect against UV. Some lenses offer a higher level of protection than others. Significant UV exposure for spectacle wearers comes from the rear lens surface.
• It activates lipufuscin phototoxic components, causing retinal cell death. The accumulation of lipofuscin in retinal cells can contribute to the deposition of drusens in AMD.
Look for a lens with a high Eye-Sun Protection Factor which protects from both the front and rear surface of the lens. The Risk Of Blue Light Light plays an essential role in everyday life. Light is fundamental for vision. It is needed for perception of the surrounding world: shapes,
• It increases the production of lipofuscin, a metabolic waste material that accumulates in retinal cells with age. It is commonly known as an “age marker” that may be found in other organs.
Solution - Wearing lenses with blueviolet light protection helps shield your eyes from harmful blue light. As well as blue-violet protection, you can also opt for lenses with UV protection as well. Some blue light protection lenses filter all blue light including blue-turquoise light. Blueturquoise light is essential to your well-being as it contributes to your sleep cycle, pupillary reflex, energy and more.
THERE’S MORE TO OPTOMETRY THAN A NEW PAIR OF GLASSES Optometry is about ensuring the ongoing health & wellbeing of your eyes!
PROTECT YOUR EYES UV and blue lights are harmful to your eyes. But with the right protection on your lenses, there’s little to worry about. Both Wanganui Eyecare and Eyes on Victoria practices use Essilor Blue Light Blocking Lens. The ONLY ones approved by the NZ Cancer Foundation.
