Animal antics
A
nimal encounters are always a huge source of excitement for children and, luckily, there are many farm parks and petting zoos where kids can be safely and gently introduced to a wide variety of creatures. Children are naturally curious about animals so it’s also a great learning experience. And that’s also the case at the Auckland Zoo-hosted sleepover, when kids get a look behind the scenes after the zoo closes its gates, as well as getting the chance to have a nighttime ramble around the enclosures. Another eye-opener for kids is getting them out to one of the many colourful markets held on the weekends, as they are a window into different cultures – and the chance to try out exotic and tasty foods. Also in the eye-opener category – literally – is a trip to the Stardome. The observatory has educational movies, displays and exhibits, with a chance to peer into space at night if the skies are clear enough. And make sure you check out crafting guru Jane Aubrey’s ideas for holiday fun. She has some really creative ideas for using everyday materials that will keep kids occupied for hours. Happy holidays!

Sheepworld
Animal magnetism Children have an enduring fascination with animals, making for a fun day trip to one of the many animal parks around Auckland
V
isiting an animal park is a great way to get kids outdoors as well as entertaining and educating them. Make a day of it as children won’t want to be hurried – they’ll want plenty of time to watch, feed or stroke the animals. Some kids make take a while to warm up to the animals, especially if they have had little contact with them or are afraid of them. Animals parks are a great introduction as they usually have knowledgable handlers and animals that are used to human contact and attention.
Butterfly Creek
Not just home to a huge collection of colourful butterflies, Butterfly Creek also has a farm, aquariums, a dinosaur park, and two giant saltwater crocodiles. Children can experience Buttermilk Farm, which has rabbits, pigs, alpacas, goats, chickens, guinea pigs and cockatoos. The animals have their own fenced area where visitors can spend time with them. As well as tropical fish aquariums, there is a collection of spiders
and insects, with a tarantula encounter offered daily for those who are brave enough. The temperature and humidity controlled Butterfly House has beautiful butterflies from South America and Asia, with streams and waterfalls to replicate their natural environment. The monkeys – Cotton Top Tamarins – are fed daily and kids will love watching their antics. Not so cute but also entertaining are the two giant saltwater crocodiles, Scar and Goldie, who have their own enclosure where the keepers interact with them in a daily show. One of the new attractions is Dinosaur Kingdom, an indoor interactive display with replica dinosaurs, skeletons and fossils. There’s also a miniature train ride and a playground to keep the kids busy all day. butterflycreek.co.nz.
Sheepworld
For a taste of Kiwiana, you can’t go past Sheepworld, just north of Warkworth, which has a show featuring sheepdogs in action and sheep-shearing. The show also
gives an insight into sheep farming and the wool industry. Kids will be able to feed and interact with friendly animals such as calves, pigs, lambs, deer, goats, donkeys, emus, possums and ponies. As well as an eco-trail through bush and wetland, Sheepworld has an adventure area created from boulders, logs and ropes where youngsters can climb and scramble. sheepworldfarm.co.nz
Ambury Park
A working farm run by Auckland Council as a regional park, Ambury Park also works as an education centre. The farm animals at Ambury include sheep, goats, cows, pigs, chickens, turkeys, rabbits and peacocks. The animals are in enclosures with walkways between them so you can get up close but you can also go into the paddocks for a hands-on experience. If you get lucky, there might be lambs arriving towards the end of the school holidays but you won’t be allowed in the paddocks with them. And make sure
Educational - Fun - Unique Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy 7 acres of peaceful heritage gardens. Fun on Tuesdays in the holidays from 10am-2pm July 7th and 14th.

Clevedon Animal Farm
This is a great place for children to get hands-on with animals, and they can enjoy watching the popular show in which animals such as donkeys, horses, goats, sheep and dogs perform in an outdoor amphitheatre. Another popular activity is one of the farm walks, which include pony rides. The guided walk around the farm gives children the chance to handle animals such as sheep, goats and ducks, and to feed smaller animals. At the horse paddock, kids can help to catch and halter a pony and take it back to the arena where it’s groomed before they saddle up for a ride. This experience teaches them a lot about how to handle animals. clevedonanimalfarm.co.nz
Kiwi Valley Farm Park
With their food bag (included in admission price) in hand, kids will find they are extremely popular here with the animals. This Henderson Valley farm park has a huge array of animals to view and feed as well as pony and horse rides. In addition to animals out in the open, Kiwi Valley has a nursery shed where kids can sit down and cuddle smaller animals like rabbits. There is also a maze on site and a creepy cave. kiwivalley.co.nz
Crystal Mountain
This West Auckland attraction is not just
another farm park where children can meet llamas, emus, ostriches, alpaca, ponies, peacocks, geese and ducks. Behind the café there is a shop packed with crystals and minerals as well as ornaments and jewellery. On a lower level there are displays of crystals, minerals and fossils. Outside, there are pony rides and you can take a ride around the farm on the Crystal Mountain Express Train. Kids will love the bungy trampoline, and some may even want to try the rollercoaster. crystalmountain.co.nz
Mt Albert Grammar School Farm
A working farm in the city? That’s right – and it is part of Mt Albert Grammar School where it is primarily used for student training but also holds tours for the public. Children can milk the cows, feed the pigs and goats, bottle-feed lambs (in season), stroke the rabbits and experience a sheep shearing demonstration. The one-hour tours are usually on Tuesdays and Fridays but can be arranged by appointment. $5 per person. For more info contact farm manager Larney Palmer, ph 846 0796 or email lamper@xtra.co.nz
Butterfly Butterfl y Creek
Reptile Park
For something different, try a visit to Reptile Park, set in bushland and overlooking the sea at Ti Point, near Leigh. Kids will be fascinated by the weird and wonderful creatures on display here: skinks, geckos, lizards, tuatara, chameleons, alligators, tortoises and turtles. reptilepark.co.nz. Clevedon Animal Farm

Market forces Taking children to the markets is an easy way to expose them to different cultures and foods Otara Market
A
uckland is an increasingly diverse and multicultural place and that can be seen in the proliferation of markets. From farmers markets to craft markets, the city is alive with different cultures and cuisines, making for a colourful experience for kids. Two of the city’s longest running markets – at Avondale and Otara – are among the biggest and most vibrant and illustrate what a cultural melting pot Auckland has become. Avondale Market is held on Sunday mornings at Avondale Racecourse in Ash St and begins at 5am. It has everything from fresh produce to bric-a-brac. There’s music,

Popular with Auckland’s growing foodie population, the La Cigale French Market in Parnell has fresh produce, breads and pastries, deli goods and wonderful cooking ingredients. The night markets mostly operate out of mall or superstore carparks and also feature live performances.

Wild night out Having a sleepover at the zoo provides a host of fun activities and some night time adventures
J
ust about every kid loves sleepovers and they don’t come much more exciting than staying at the Auckland Zoo overnight. The Kids Only Safari Night has been running since 2004. For 8 to 14year-olds, the next event will be on July 11 (cost $65). Parents take their children to the zoo at 3.30pm followed by a briefing and safety talk before parents are farewelled. Kids then split into guided groups for a daylight zoo trail. A barbecue dinner is served at the Old Elephant House before the kids help to set up beds. After some games, the group goes on a torch-lit
expedition to explore the zoo. This is normally the highlight for most kids, as they love being in the zoo when it is empty and looking behind the scenes. Red cellophane placed over the torches means the light doesn’t disturb the animals. A staffer says, “They see where different animals sleep, and some animals are more active at night. We normally head up and see the seals, where they are sleeping, and the hippos being fed, and we can usually see the lemurs asleep up top of the trees.” Children are also shown the food stores for the animals and check out the zoo’s big refrigerators.
After After the walk, they watch a DVD on the big screen at the Old Elephant House before lights out at 10pm. In the morning the children pack their belongings and have breakfast before another guided walk. Parents collect their kids at 8am. WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable clothing (including a change of clothes) and closed-in footwear. Raincoat, warm hat, torch with red cellophane covering the light. Bookings essential. Starring role Inspiration and education in equal measure are part of the Stardome experience
O
ne of the best places to entertain and educate kids is Auckland’s Stardome. These school holidays the Stardome has two shows in the Planetarium theatre followed by space-themed activities. ‘Accidental Astronauts’ is an animated adventure for little ones and follows the adventures of Sy and Annie and their dog Armstrong as they take an unexpected journey into space. ‘Astronaut’ is for older kids and takes the audience into space by experiencing a rocket launch from an astronaut’s perspective, as well as seeing what it is like to float around the International Space Station. After each show, children are invited to
help staff fill the Space Room with stars to create the first Stardome galaxy, and they can make their own rocket to take home. From July 6 to 17, Accidental Astronauts plays at 10am and Astronaut plays at noon and 2pm. Prices are $10 adult, $12 child. Even if you don’t take the kids to a show, they can check out the Stardome displays before stargazing in the evening. Display spaces are divided into four areas: ‘The Universe’ explains the origins of the universe. ‘Our Place in Space’ features exhibits of meteorites, and pieces of the Moon and Mars. The highlight is the Magic Planet, a large digital video globe with images projected from inside so it can transform into various planets at the touch of a button. The ‘Looking into the Universe’ section explains how telescopes work, and ‘Getting off Earth’ has a weighing machine that tells you how much you would weigh on other planets. Visitors can book a session with the Stardome’s largest telescope, the Zeiss. Public presentations – for eight years old plus – are on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings subject to suitable sky conditions. Bookings for shows are essential. Cheap & cheerful Crafting doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise. There’s fun to be had with recycled and everyday materials that we flew through the sky and finished our afternoon off making marshmallow shooters with picnic cups and balloons. So much fun with such simple (and cheap) materials. Let us show you some cost-effective ways to entertain the kids these school holidays. We had nine kids aged from three to 12 crafting with us and everyone had a great time – crafting rules.

f I were to tell you that with toilet rolls and paper we were able to entertain nine kids for two hours, would you think I was crazy? Actually, don’t answer that, but we totally did – and had the best afternoon having fun making cool things. Starting with our recycling – we made city buildings and one-of-a-kind creatures, then we moved into paper and made planes

PLANE & SIMPLE We really enjoyed the movie Paper Planes a few weeks ago – and it totally reignited the fun to be had through making planes out of paper. There are so many different different planes you can make – and there are a plethora of instructions available online – check out funwithjane.co.nz for paper plane ideas. We used A4 paper, but you could use origami paper too depending what type of plane you want to make.

ROLL PLAY
I find it hard to throw anything away as there’s always something you can make. And having fun with recycling is a great way to reuse everyday items that are easy to find around the home. Today we’re going to show you how to make animals, buildings and desk organisers with toilet rolls. any Easter celebration. Bunny bunting makes cute baby shower decorations, too. Here’s what you need: • Toilet rolls • Paper • Sticky tape • Googly eyes • PVA glue • Scissors • Sparkly things
TOILET ROLL BUILDINGS
We had some longer cardboard tubes from rolls of paper towels etc and thought we’d make some buildings for our animals to live in. We had some adults help with the cutting out of windows and picked the colours we wanted to paint them and got cracking. Once the paint was dry we popped on some paper roofs and our city was good to go.
TOILET ROLL ANIMALS
The brief was simple. Take the toilet rolls, wrap them in any paper you like, put on any pompoms or decorating bits and as many eyeballs as your creature will have and you’ll be good to go. When I asked the kids what they were making there were all sorts of answers. Cockatoos, parrots, bunnies, epic snow bunnies and sheep.
SHOE BOX /TOILET PENCIL ORGANISERROLL
This is so simple – and such an effective way to keep track of you r coloured pencils and pens. Simply fill a wrapped shoebox with toilet rolls – and you ’re done. I was in charge of making sur e all the pencils were sharpened before they went in the organiser – colouring in is getting some good PR right now for it’s qualities of mindfulness – I can tho roughly concur that colouring in is good for you. A great rainy day (or any day) activit y.

SHOOTING STARS We follow an awesome blog called Goldieblox that is about making toys that encourage girls into engineering, and they share DIY projects that we love to make. Marshmallow shooters are so simple to make and will offer endless hours of entertainment. We saved this project for the end of our afternoon and enjoyed the combo of flying planes and marshmallows in the back yard.
Here’s what you’ll need: • Plastic cups • Balloons • A bag of mini marshmallows (mini marshmallows will fl y further, but we fly used big ones and they worked okay, too) • Scissors • Rubber band Here’s how to go about it: 1. Tie a knot in the balloon. 2. Carefully cut the rounded end off of the balloon. 3. Carefully cut the bottom off a plastic cup. 4. Stretch the balloon over the cup and secure with a rubber band. 5. Load your marshmallow into the shooter and you’re good to go. Fly away!
