Welcome from Art Deco Trust Chair Kathy Hill

W

elcome to the Tremains Art Deco Festival for 2016. With the generous support of our sponsors, the Art Deco Trust is delighted to present Napier’s iconic event for the 28th time. This year, we have spread the celebrations over some extra days, as there was just too much excitement to be contained within a weekend! Do enjoy all that Jonathan Smith, our new Event Manager and his team have created in putting this year’s programme together. As always, the old favourites such as the Vintage Car Parade and the Gatsby Picnic will anchor the event,

but there are some wonderful new surprises in store besides! I look forward to sharing all the amazing sights and sounds of the festival with you as we celebrate the best of the Art Deco period together. And there is no better setting for this celebration than here in Napier, where we have the perfect backdrop of our unique 1930s heritage architecture. At the Art Deco Trust, we have been planning the festival for the best part of a year. All we need now is some great Hawke’s Bay weather and the pleasure of your company, all dressed up and ready to party! Kathy Hill Chair, Art Deco Trust

O

ne of the many highlights of the annual Tremains Art Deco Festival is the Vintage Car Parade held on Saturday at 12.30pm. Commencing at Clive Square, over 250 vintage cars from New Zealand and overseas will be led by a 1908 Rolls Royce Silver Ghost. Not many people will have had the opportunity to view such an exclusive vehicle and to see it

in the Napier’s historic setting will be unique for many. Starting at 12.30pm the parade takes about an hour to travel the route through Napier City Centre,

starting from Clive Square and moving up Emerson Street towards Marine Parade where all the vehicles will be on display for the afternoon.

Parade viewers are reminded to find a position early and for safety reasons to keep well back from the road way.

Lee-Anne Freeman’s Top Ten Dressing Tips for Ladies

T

hese tips have been designed by a leading Art Deco fashion retailer based in Napier and are ideal for those starting a beginners Deco wardrobe. It’s all about the dress or frock. Wear a plain, pastel with small flower print shift dress with a little sleeve or if preferred sleeveless. Appropriate length should be below the knee. The most important accessory is a matching hat in a shade to compliment the dress. A brim for shade or a cloche (a brimless hat and fits like a bell shape) coming down fittingly over your head. Add a lovely flower or trim of ribbon or a scarf with a hat pin on the side of the crown. Make sure you try hats on with your glasses to insure a comfortable fit. Shoes can be a pale colour to match with your choice of hat. Choose a Mary Jane Style or Tee -Strap like a dance shoe with closed in toe. Ballet flat or court shoe will work perfectly as well. Undergarments, full or a half slip in a pale shade should be worn if the fabric is see-through

and also pale nude seamed pantyhose. Stockings are more authentic but you will need to wear a suspender belt. Gloves are great and a wonderful addition to an outfit if they are crocheted or lace in a shade to compliment your chosen accessories. Jewellery is important and will enhance your frock. White, cream or coloured pearl beads, perhaps a long strand that can be wrapped around your neck doubled as an alternative look. Matching earrings is a good idea and a little drop is ideal along with a pearl bracelet to finish. For an authentic touch use vintage pieces from 1930s, e.g. marcasite jewellery, paste, early plastic, bone and glass. Common eyewear for this period such as sunglasses are usually small and round shape. Metal and or tortoise shell faux rims are the most ideal. A parasol is a lovely addition for a feminine touch and sensible sun protection in our high UV light. Make up can be a simple skin tone foundation with rouged cheeks, pale eye shadow, kohl eye pencil

and a shade of red for the lips, with a pale coloured finger nail polish. Hairstyles, well, there is a chocolate box of choice. Depending on what type of style you have now, it may be simpler to just wear a bob (popular period choice) style wig to avoid having to drastically change your current

style. Advice from your hairdresser will help you decide. Visit Lee-anne Freeman at Charleston Chic, 1/2 Tennyson Street, Napier and be sure to attend ‘How to Gatsby’, Fri 19 Feb 10.30am, Tremains Marquee, Lower Lawn, Marine Parade, Napier. Tickets $27

T

he Gatsby Picnic, located on the upper and lower lawns between the Napier War Memorial Conference Centre and the Hawke’s Bay Toyota Sound Shell, is one of the key events held during the Tremains Art Deco Festival. A time to gather your friends, Deco finery, gazebo or picnic rug and set up by the seaside for a relaxed Sunday afternoon in the sunshine. Bring your finest tea setting and have it all on display at your picnic site by 1.30pm when the Dilmah judges will choose the best tea setting and award a wonderful Dilmah prize. There’ll also be a prize for the most elegant gazebo.

So that everyone has an enjoyable time we have introduced a few guidelines to help with your arrival, departure and whilst attending the Gatsby Picnic. Gazebos cannot be erected before 6am on Sunday 21 Feb – this will be monitored. It is not possible to pre-book a space for the Gatsby Picnic. Drop off point Marine Parade (seaward side) north of the Browning Street roundabout. This is a loading zone only – parking not permitted. Porters will be available to help transport your items from the drop off point to the picnic area.

21 There is no vehicle access to the Gatsby Picnic area. On the upper lawn please erect your gazebo on the seaward side of the lawn. The ends of the top lawn should be kept clear so people who are promenading have a clear path. When the top lawn is full, gazebos can be erected on the lower lawn to the south of the Gemco Marquee. The lower lawn between the Tom Parker Fountain and the

Napier War Memorial Conference Centre is reserved for the Tremains Marquee. We suggest smaller gazebos to allow more people to have space on the lawns. Toilets are located behind the Hawke’s Bay Toyota Sound Shell, War Memorial Conference Centre and Marine Parade by the DOC building. Marine Parade will be closed from the Tom Parker Fountain to Albion Lane.
