New Zealand’s oldest newspaper bringing the news to you for...over
The Whanganui Chronicle is New Zealand’s oldest newspaper. Based in Whanganui, it celebrates 165 years of publishing in September 2021. Local resident Henry Stokes first proposed the paper for Petre, as the town was then called, but initial publication was held back by lack of equipment. As no printing press was available, Stokes approached the technical master at Whanganui Collegiate School, Rev. Charles Nicholls, and together they constructed a maire wood and iron make shift printing press, on which, with the help of the staff and pupils of the school, the first edition of the Chronicle was printed on 18 September1856.The motto of the paper, printed at the top of the editorial column, was “Verite Sans Peur,” French for “Truth without Fear.” Initially the paper was sold fortnightly, at a price of six pence. In 1866 the Chronicle went tri-weekly, and in 1871 began publishing daily and has done so since. The paper was owned and edited by Gilbert Cars on from 1875 onwards. In the1880s Carson’s sister Margaret Bullock worked as a reporter and assistant editor for the paper, and, along with Laura Jane Suisted, was one of the first female parliamentary correspondents in New Zealand. The Chronicle’s rival from the1860s onward was the Evening Herald (later the Wanganui Herald), founded by John Ballance. The two daily papers merged in the 1970s, and in 1986 the Herald became a free weekly, later renamed the Whanganui Midweek. The Chronicle is currently Whanganui’s only daily newspaper.

IN WHANGANUI, STICKABILITY IS SOMETHING MANY BUSINESSES CAN HANG THEIR HATS ON. Some of them are large operations, employing significant numbers of people while others are much smaller businesses, often owner-operated with maybe one or two staff on the payroll. What they have in common is an ability to go the distance, weathering all sorts of economic storms along the way. Their recipe for success includes hard work, a determination to succeed and an attitude which makes their business stand out. They are success stories we should recognise and cherish because they have been the backbone of our city’s economy for decades, at the same time providing employment for workers and their families along the way. They deliver their service in a way that makes customers and clients go back for more. We acknowledge the commitment of the businesses who are participating in this special publication, recognising them as part of Whanganui’s Heritage.

Did you know? The Royal Whanganui Opera House is New Zealand’s last Victorian theatre. It opened in 1900 and is renowned nationally and internationally for its architecture and acoustics. In 1890 Samuel Drew offered his private collection to the town of Whanganui and in 1895 the Whanganui Public Museum opened, free to visitors, for the first time. Alexander Heritage & Research Library was opened on 28 June 1933, funded in most part by the generous gift of Miss E Alexander in memory of her late father Mr James Alexander. The Grand Hotel, a prestigious Whanganui landmark, first opened in 1927. Kowhai Park Playground was built in the 1950s with a vision to create a children’s playground as the first of its kind in New Zealand. Durie Hill Underground Elevator was built in 1919 and is ranked by Heritage New Zealand as a Category 1 Historic Place, and is New Zealand’s only public underground elevator. The Dublin Street Bridge was first opened on 3 November 1914

DAVID JONES MOTORS
T
he Jones name has been synonymous with the motor vehicle trade in Whanganui for three generations but that sort of longevity doesn’t happen by chance. It’s all about diligence, product and customer services.
It’s that backbone which has seen David Jones Motors grow from small beginnings in 1984 to become the city’s largest dealership now offering a total six brands under its flag across two inner city sites.
The company’s sites are home to Suzuki, SsangYong, LDV, Nissan, Mitsubishi and the newest brand of Hyundai.
market crash in 1987 hit the whole community and times were tough. But as a small, lean dealership the company survived.
The inclusion of Hyundai signals another milestone in the evolution of what remains a staunchly familybased company.
Importing Japanese used cars helped them through, and in the 1990s demand increased as the economy recovered. In 1992 they purchased Regent Motors and over the next 10 years the business grew. The Suzuki brand came to the Avenue yard in 2002 and since then has been joined by Mitsubishi.
David Jones followed his father Doug into the motor vehicle business and set up David Jones Motors in 1984, starting with just 20 cars in stock. Those early years weren’t always easy. The share

With two prime locations and six Franchises under its umbrella, David Jones Motors market coverage is recognised by its success. Competing with other similar or larger cities, like Napier and New Plymouth,
they have won prestigious awards like the Suzuki Sales Excellence Award five times in the last six years and Nissans three times in the last 5 years. The company is now run by the three sons/ brothers, Gareth, Nick and Richard, who share the load between the two sites and the company succeeds on customer service and it is something David Jones Motors worked hard to retain and improve on. Passionate about this business The original Elizabeth Palmer Team: From Left- Justine Palmer, Jodie Palmer and Elizabeth Palmer. Elizabeth Palmer Skin Care has been a part of the Heart of Whanganui for over 36 years. It was founded by entrepreneur Elizabeth Palmer. The business was first established above the National Bank building- Victoria Avenue in 1985. Elizabeth later expanded the business with a beautiful development at 56a Victoria Avenue in 1994 - EPSC’s current premise. Elizabeth and her two daughters, Justine Palmer and Jodie Palmer formed an excellent reputation and were the backbone to the success of the business - a family striving to achieve great results in beauty treatments with a particular focus on Electrolysis and Skin Care Services.
Elizabeth Palmer also had a passion for perfume and was a proud stockist of Guerlain Perfumes. The decor for the front of house of EPSC was based on the Guerlain Boutique on the Champs Elysees in Paris which Elizabeth had personally visited. Later, Elizabeth turned her focus more to Skin Care and EPSC introduced Whanganui to what is still the Number 1 Professional’s Choice of Skin Care - Dermalogica. I had the honour of learning under this family-operated business and started my journey at EPSC in 1999. Elizabeth Palmer Skin Care became a second generation owned and operated business when her eldest daughter, Justine Palmer, purchased and carried on the success of the business for a further 11 years from 2009-2020. It was during this time that EPSC was awarded Dermalogica Skin Care Centre of the Year for two consecutive years, 2013 & 2014, reflecting the businesses success. Justine later offered the purchase of the business to me, and I became the next proud of owner of EPSC in April 2020. I strive to grow and develop the business further whilst upholding all

THE COMMERCIAL HOTEL The Commercial Hotel is located at the corner of Bell and Bates Streets. Opening in 1893 under the name of the Anchor Hotel, the name was changed to the Commercial Hotel in 1901. Steve Lawson, the current proprietor took over the business on October 7 2019 from former leasee of nine years, Averyl Kahukaka. He plans on renovating the hotel and lease out private rooms that have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities and improve the unused kitchen downstairs, to be leased out as a functioning commercial one. “This is the last of the old-style pubs where a tradie or a farmer can come in with his singlet on and get a jug, and that’s not going to change,” Steve Lawson said.
The hotel’s opening hours are on the door but Steve says he’ll continue to close up when the last customer leaves. Whanganui’s “lovely little pub, with salt of the earth people” will continue to be the last old-style drinking establishment in the town centre. So come on in and play some pool, grab your friends to soak up some sun and chill out in our private garden bar and on occasion, take in some live music! Keep an eye out for events and we look forward to seeing you there!
THE COMMERCIAL HOTEL Whanganui’s only REAL pub left in town! Come on in after work for a Jug or two with your mate. Gumboots, High Vis and Tradies all welcome here! J.Williams Jewellers 1903
Established in Wanganui by James Williams in 1903. James was a watchmaker who set up his first business in Waipawa and moved to Wanganui from the Hawkes Bay. His first Wanganui shop was opposite the former Catholic Church in the centre of Victoria Avenue. In 1905 he moved to the old Hannah’s building opposite his soon to be erected new premises. This opened in 1912 and J. Williams and Co Jewellers have been there ever since. Today they still operate with many of the original cabinets, fittings and
chandeliers giving a unique atmosphere. James died in 1948, his son Joe took over the business. In the early 1960’s Miss Wanda Williams, daughter of Joe, returned from London due to her father’s ill health and eventually took over until she sold the business in 1991 to the current owner local manufacturing jeweller Philip Sell. Philip moved his manufacturing business that was in the AA building, upstairs at J. Williams’s premises, giving the shop the best of both worlds, manufacturing & retail jewellers.

MAINSTREET WHANGANUI – 30YEARS SUPPORTING CBD BUSINESSES Mainstreet Whanganui – 30 years supporting CBD businesses With our population on the rise and having accolades bestowed upon us including being ‘New Zealand’s most beautiful city’ two years running, Whanganui is enjoying a real moment in the sun right now. But that hasn’t always been the case. In the early 1990s, our central city had grown increasingly dilapidated. There were as many vacant shops as occupied ones. And with a stagnating population and growing competition from the recently opened Trafalgar Square Mall, businesses in the central city were facing serious economic decline. In response to these challenges, Mainstreet Whanganui was formally established in 1992 as a lobby group to bring the central city shopping area back to life. One of the first steps was the Town Centre Upgrade which began in 1991. The project had initially focused on replacing ageing underground
stormwater pipes. But our retailers saw that it was also an opportunity to give the Avenue a much-needed above ground spruce up. Council agreed and a range of urban design improvements were made, including laying our unique cobblestone pavements and the introduction of more trees and green space. Following the upgrade, Mainstreet secured a contract from Council to maintain the eight blocks around lower Victoria Ave. This work would become a core role for Mainstreet over the next 20-odd years, providing a steady income source and allowing us to develop more activities to promote the local economy.
people into town and celebrate our local creative community. Increasingly we’re also working to ensure Whanganui’s main shopping precinct has a strong digital presence, through our own website and social media channels – and by providing local businesses with the resources they need to harness the benefits of digital marketing themselves. If you’d like to find out more about Mainstreet Whanganui, feel free to contact us anytime at info@mainstreetwhanganui.co.nz
Today, our operations team are still up at the crack of dawn each day keeping our central city looking its best with street cleaning, maintaining street furniture, looking after gardens and hanging flower baskets, decorating our trees with festive lighting and timely graffiti removal. Additionally, Mainstreet now organises several flagship events – including the Mainstreet Vintage Caboodle – that bring

Recently rebranded to become the Whanganui War Memorial Centre (WWMC), the WWMC stands as a prominent figure in Queens Park and is considered to be one of the finest examples of New Zealand modernist architecture. RACING CLUB IN
NEW ZEALAND The Wanganui Jockey Club can lay claim to being the oldest racing club in New Zealand today,
at 173 years this December.
The Wellington Independent wrote of this meeting entitling it “The Wanganui Fete”. The use of the English written language was, of course, far more flamboyant in the 1840s. “Owing to the spirited exertions of a few lovers of good old British sports, the little town of Wanganui has anticipated an agreeable Christmas by a three days’ fete. The amusements commenced on Thursday…and it is worthy of observation as marking a great improvement in the settlement since the commencement of the year that the first two days were devoted to horse racing. The spot selected for the rendezvous is a piece of level land near the town capable of being converted into a course at a trifling expense.” Racing went on from this day in an organisation known as the Race Track Club and while records may have been kept, they no longer remain. Grand Old Stand In less than two hours on May 20, 1997, fire destroyed 90 years of racing history in Wanganui as the old grandstand at the racecourse was gutted.
The club had shared the distinction of holding the first race meetings in 1848 with Nelson, although with the Wanganui meeting being held late in the year, Nelson was given the nod as the eldest. When the 150-year sesqui-centennial book was written by author Laraine Sole and published in 1998, we were able to claim being the oldest club in the country still racing at the same venue. In fact, the book gave substance to a claim we were also the first sporting club of any description in the colony, which was still in existence. With the demise of Nelson, we are now able to comfortably lay claim to both the oldest racing club and the oldest club of any description. From the earliest years when the military, in conjunction with the early settlers, ran race meetings, a rich tapestry has been woven to capture one of New Zealand’s most fascinating historical snapshots in time spanning an incredible 170 years. Luckily for us the imagination of those early soldiers and settlers included the racing of horses and successive generations have kept the flame alive for us to enjoy. Wanganui was originally known as Petre (pronounced Peter) until the late 1840s.
It was named after the Hon, Henry Petre, a young blood of a noble house in England who incidentally imported the thoroughbred stallions Aether and Riddlesworth to this country in 1843. So even in the early naming of Wanganui as it was, a link had been established with the racing industry. The early history of racing in the Wanganui district was difficult to trace as no local paper was printed in those early days and the onlymention of events was in the Wellington, Nelson or Auckland papers. Unfortunately these reports were not always accurate. In the 1840s there were thousands of Imperial Troops in New Zealand and with Wanganui being a garrison town the influence of the militia had a huge bearing on the establishment of racing here. The piece of land they used at that first meeting was owned byaMr Pick and was little more than a barren waste of sandhills and holes, flax, toetoe, ti-tree and tutu with little native grass. Indeed all grasses were imported in New Zealand and it was many decades before the race track took on the manicured appearance we have come to know. Lieutenant McGregor of H.M. 65th Regiment owned the winner of first running of the Wanganui
The old stand had survived numerous earthquakes and had been used by many organisations over the years, including the army during World War 2. Fifty firefighters from Waitotara, Waverley, Ratana, Marton and Palmerston North battled intense heat and flames that ignited around 9.40am that fateful morning. In her book, Wanganui Jockey Club 1848-1998, author Laraine Sole described how On lookers from all sides of the racecourse watched in awe as large sections of the grandstand crashed to the ground. Extra equipment was trucked in from Palmerston North, including breathing apparatus, to help firefighters and up to 15 appliances from throughout the region battle the blaze. Firemen stayed until late that night dampening hot spots. Fortunately, they were able to contain the blaze in the wooden building and the Eulogy Lounge, which was subsequently gutted and refurbished at a cost of $600,000, so that 10 days later the club was able to host the winter meeting with little inconvenience. It was especially traumatic for staff as 1998was the sesqui (150) year and all the catering facilities had been lost.

Success is made in Whanganui Whanganui is at the heart of all that John and Ruth Palamountain do, particularly within their business life. While born in Kent, England, John was raised and educated in Whanganui, although did attend Wesley College in Auckland as a border for several years where he played rugby in the 1st XV. John’s entrepreneurial skills were recognized at an early age when he was just six months old after his en mother Joan placed him in a play pe and to keep him amused gave him cake o tins to play with – John used them to escape over the bars.
His love of animals also began at an early age while working on farms after leaving school, but it wasn’t until 1973 that John began a career in the petfood industry when he joined Tux Distributors. John and Ruth married in 1977 and the following year became involved in Rover Products in Otaki primarily manufacturing Rover Dog Biscuits and Bob’s Mix BarsBut the call from home was relentless and finally in 1993 John and Ruth bought a major shareholding in a dry dogfood manufacturing business that had done its dash in Palmerston North. Bonny Products had no room to expand in the Manawatu, but there was plenty of reasons that Whanganui could be its new home. Whanganui had 90 per cent of the raw materials needed to produce dry dogfood and an ideal site to relocate to, the iconic Griffin’s biscuit factory in Taupo Quay. The new site allowed for increased production, a prime base for distribution and access to a solid base
of hard working, conscientious staff. John headed to Italy to buy a secondhand oven, but on arrival found the company had sold the one he thought he had dibs on. Using his smooth talkin ng entrepreneurial skills, naged d to buy a new oven John man e pric ce of a secondhand unit for the hile alllowing the Italian company an wh opporrtunity to save face. Bonny Products was up and running withiin six months of deciding to relocatte to Whanganui. In 1994 global giant Heinz Wattie bought Bonny Products with John staying on at the helm for six years. Ironically Heinz Wattie finally relocated the business back to Manawatu. A nagging concern about the health and longevity of working farm dogs prompted John to look more closely at supplementary food products to improve animal health. So husband and wife team set up Vitapower in 2001 and have since marketed and sold their increasing range of animal supplementary food products worldwide through the Palamountains Animal Nutrition brand. Established as innovators in the animal supplement industry, Palamountains bring a unique range of oil-based products designed to improve the overall health of animals. Palamountains supplements were a world-first patent - a scientific formulation developed with

Unlike e other supplements or processed foods on the market, this unique formulation has up to a 99.5 per cent absorption rate in contrast to the 10-20 per cent of traditional powders and pill supplements. Working closely with Massey University Food of Technology scientist, Professor Brian Wilkinson, the Palamountains have fine-tuned their growing list of supplementary products to better suit specific animal groups, including equine, dogs and cats, dairy, sheep and beef, birds, bees and deer. The collaboration has been and continues to be a success winning the hearts of animal health markets in a growing number of Asian countries, the Arab Emirates and here at home in New Zealand. Vitapower, through its Palamountains Animal Nutrition brand, is now an established innovator in the animal health industry providing scientific nutrition worldwide. The passion of the Palamountain family which established the business in 2001, especially John’s vision, has driven the creation of the unique and effective business that is the heart of Whanganui.

THE SARJEANT GALLERY The Sarjeant Gallery has been a part of the Whanganui community for over 100 years. During the period of the original build from 1917 to 1919, the construction team included many master craftsmen working on various complex elements of the build – from stonemasons handling the Oamaru stone cladding to specialist carpenters and carvers, painters, mould makers and flooring technicians who knew how to lay the enormous swathe of Matai floorboards using the ‘secret nail’ technique that showcased the beauty of the golden timber – yet left no visible nail heads or fixtures to interrupt the eye.
numbering system will make possible the replication of the beautiful original patterning. The Sarjeant Gallery will have that golden glow again.
Another iconic element of the Sarjeant is the 14 meter high dome which makes the building so immediately recognisable. For over a hundred years, exhibitions and events have been staged under the dome and many people have been married under it too.Wh When h the gallery ry y was originally built, it was often comm mented that it was the e ‘Rolls Royce of galleries’ and this stunning space will have been a key part of its appeal.
Those floorboards have been removed from the building as the redevelopment is well underway now. Each board has been carefully lifted, had their secret nails removed, been stripped of layers and layers of polyurethane, sanded back and then uniquely numbered and stored in a weather proof container. When the earthquake strengthening of the fine old building is complete and the interior ready to have the floors re-laid, the container will be reopened and the

ADVERTORIAL
25 Years – Ezi Does It
You would be hard-pushed to find anyone who has not fallen on tough times at some stage of their life. Raising children can be a constant struggle for families. Rent, mortgages, school expenses, food and then you add other unforeseen expenses, like funerals, and it’s very easy to see how it can happen.
I
n 1996 RexTitter and Carolyn McLeod identified a gap in the market to help families in this exact situation. Families who needed small loans for those short-term expenses and Ezi Finance was born. From its inception 25 years ago Rex and Carolyn had a very clear vision of what they wanted their company to achieve. They lived in this community and they wanted to make a difference to the families where they live. This was never going to be a handout. It was, and still is, a handup. The demand for the service of Ezi Finance surpassed their expectations and in 1997They moved their operation to the site that they occupy today in WicksteedTerrace and at their peak had eight staff. To not only survive in business for 25 years, but to thrive, is not for the fainthearted, especially in the finance game. The recipe for Ezi Finance’s longevity comes down to tenacity, lateral thinking, foresight,
determination always with their work ethic at the centre. Ezi also walked-the-talk where family was concerned. Not only did Carolyn’s daughter Luanne begin with the company in 2000, but son Clarke came on board in 2017 and is now Managing Director. “The change in the financial environment since the company began has been exponential. In 1996, there were only two finance companies in Whanganui. The internet was still in its infancy and it was a very labour-intensive process. Fast-forward to 2021 and any person here in Whanganui has access to over 70 online finance agencies where they can get a quick buck at the push of a button”, says McLeod. The lack of investment in the well-being of the customer and the impact these loans are having on their families is something that he finds difficult to stomach. Due to technology, Ezi Finance is now a two-person operation and
Clarke and Gail Hayman know their clients by name. Some of these people have been with them since the company was founded. Clarke continues, “I see clients every day who pay the bare minimum off their credit cards, store cards and payday loans with interest rates that are so debilitating that they never see any financial progress. Something has to change. That something is consolidation – and McLeod is banging the educational drum around this so that people understand what it means and how they can benefit. Ezi Finance are not only wanting to give people financial solutions – they also give back to the community continuing the rich history of involvement with what
is important to families in Whanganui. They are the sponsors of the Braves Softball team and the Pirates Under six and seven’s rippa rugby. During the colder months, Clarke has gone out to all manner of clients to deliver blankets to keep their kids warm. He has run radio promotions to ‘KillThe Bill’ that helped reunite families who couldn’t afford it, put shoes on children’s feet, paid for swimming club fees, paid for rowing trips and more recently, when his friend had a heart attack at his local gym, Clarke and the Ezi FinanceTeam were on the doorstep donating a defibrillator to the gym. There has never been a them-and-us mentality with Ezi Finance. It’s we. “It’s really quite simple” says Clarke. “If our customers succeed, we succeed.”

FOR THE BIGGEST RANGE OF HIRE EQUIPMENT IN TOWN Harrison’s HireMaster is one of those businesses that started when someone saw a gap in the market.
From the 1950’s through until the early 70’s, the Harrison clan had a couple of grocery shops around Wanganui. With the winds of change starting to sweep through the grocery trade, Bruce and Ann Harrison sold the Four Square business in Aramoho in 1973 and turned to a bit of property development for a while. Frustrated with nowhere to hire basic building equipment for his projects, Bruce hit upon the idea of starting the first hire business in Wanganui. Now remember this was back in 1975. There wasn’t a lot of help to gauge the viability of a hire business back then so Bruce and Ann set forth with lots of enthusiasm, hired an old building in Victoria Ave where McDonalds now stands, spent what precious money they had on a few bits of gear and prayed some customers might venture in the door. From very humble beginnings the business slowly grew and Bruce and Ann agreed that this was a whole lot better than selling Vanilla Wine biscuits! After a couple of years they had to relocate to bigger premises at 3 Churton Street, and gradually bought a bit more equipment, and a bit more land on both sides of the street. Oldest son Grant joined the business in 1990, having completed his trade qualification as a Motor Mechanic, and was soon joined by his wife Karine (they got hitched in 1992). In 2001 the old Cutelli’s bakery further down Churton street came up for sale, so the family moved the business 100 meters to much larger premises. While the present location at 26 Churton Street offered drivethrough under-cover access for customers, it allowed the family to centralise all of their equipment within one large site. In 2007, Bruce and Ann decided to step back from the business, leaving Grant and Karine to steer the business into its fourth decade. In early 2013 Grant and Karine looked a bit further beyond the Wanganui vista. Cousin Paul and his wife Alison joined Grant and
Karine, and the Bull family opened a brand new Hire Company in Upper Hutt. Not only is the business continuing to grow but so is the number of Harrisons becoming involved in the hire industry. Grant and Karine opened the Hire Master Feilding yard in May 2018 to great delight of the local in and has all you Contracting and DIY hire equipment. From diggers to trenchers, sanders to ladders we have it alll. Come in and see us. Today Harrison’s HireMaster offers an extensive range of contracting and DIY equipment and Party and Catering equipment from Cutlery to Marquees. Karine has continued to develop the party hire range, especially for wedding celebrations of all sizes, while Grant keeps on buying all sorts of new and interesting machinery. So the Harrison’s have been in the Hire Business in Wanganui for over 40 years. It doesn’t seem like that’s going to change in a hurry. 107YEARS OF MONUMENTAL MASONRY If ever a business in Whanganui can point to a tangible sign of its enterprise, then Anderson Memorials is one of them. From the historic Heads Road cemetery to the currently expanding Aramoho cemetery, and in cemeteries in neighbouring districts, headstones made by the company are there in vast numbers. In May 2014, Anderson Memorials celebrated its centennial. The business spans five generations. It started with AP Anderson, his son Les, Les’s son Richard and today, Richard’s son Tony Anderson, the great grandson of the founder who now runs the business and is still working from the same Aramoho site where it all began.
they had to mark the letters onto the stone. They still use sandblasting today but computers are used to mark out the inscription before the masking is transferred onto the stone and sandblasted.Very little work is in marble these days, with the majority done in granite. Anderson Memorials are foundation members of the NZ Master Monumental Masons Association which was formed in 1945 and it was at this time that granite became more popular. Anderson Memorials were proud to accept two awards at the recent
New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association AGM in Wellington. These were for the overall Supreme Award for Memorial Excellence and the Memorial Restoration Award. Tony said “ I, and my experienced and talented staff try our very best to create a suitable memorial, and it is very satisfying for us to achieve something special for the families, who entrust us to create an enduring focal point that will last for generations. Granite is a beautiful natural stone and we are always working to personalise with new designs and ideas.”
Anderson Memorials is the only local manufacturer of memorial headstones in Whanganui and whilst firmly rooted in Aramoho, the family business has branches in Palmerston North and Feilding, and that spread has been responsible for its growth. It all started with hammer and chisel, before pneumatic hammer. Sandblasting followed, even though that still meant

Generations of shoppers have found them to be their store of choice for home furnishings and generations of employees have devoted their working lives to the company. Consistently, the business has remained a locally owned and operated enterprise. The company originated from a group of tradesmen working together to make and supply furniture directly to the public. It developed in scale to wholesaling and supplying commercial furniture throughout the southern half of the North Island. The later popularity of wall-to-wall carpet became an opportunity for the company to become strongly involved. Supply and making of curtains and blinds completed the total home furnishings package on offer. So now although not actually manufacturing furniture, Wanganui

LEARN TO FLY AT THE WANGANUI AERO CLUB Ninety one years ago, when the Wanganui Aero Club was building what is now the Whanganui Airport, learning to fly was the domain of the brave, perhaps foolhardy, but definitely the dreamers. Aircraft of the time were flimsy affairs made of wood, Irish linen, and wire. Their engines were heavy, low on power and not particularly reliable. And the aircraft themselves were notoriously difficult to fly with marginal stability. They were, by today’s standards, flammable death traps, temperamental creatures which would give up the will to fly with little notice, nor care about where they were. Today the aircraft that are available to learn to fly in are very different pieces of machinery to those at the beginnings of flight. Safety and reliability are dominant criteria in their design, as is being easy to fly. This has opened up the opportunity to learn to fly to many more. Flying is still exciting, but learning to fly is achievable by anyone with the urge. Most who learn to fly these days are still the dreamers, but they do not need to be overly brave, just ready to push their limits a little to expand their skill sets.

Learning to fly is still challenging, but not excessively so. Much of today’s flying training focusses on safety, planning and Learn to Fly at the Wanganui Aero Club preparing to deal with possible problems, and practicing repeatedly, basic skills designed to ensure today’s pilots are not only safe, but capable flyers. While ninety years ago, such adventurism was very much the domain of men, today
no barriers exist to prevent anyone with a desire, from learning to fly.Wanganui Aero Club is still doing today what it was doing ninety years ago, teaching people to fly. The Aeroclub can schedule the learning process at a pace that suits the individual. With a professional, and supportive atmosphere, as well as an active social club, aspiring pilots and aviation enthusiasts are welcome.
