celebrant Choosing a

Marriage Celebrant Ready to start planning your wedding? There is a lot to do which is stressful. Let me reduce the stress by taking care of the legal part and designing the ceremony to reflect your own unique style. Contact me to discuss how I can help you make your wedding ceremony very special.

Mobile: 029 242 2440 Email: kate@kandjenterprises.info Website: www.katesmith.nz

W

hen planning your wedding one of the most important decisions you will make is choosing your celebrant. A well-chosen celebrant will help you create your dream wedding but in order to perform marriages legally in New Zealand, he or she must be appointed as an independent marriage celebrant pursuant to section 11 of the Marriage Act 1955 and be registered with the Department of Internal Affairs. Celebrants undergo a strenuous selection process and must maintain registration annually. Points to consider when choosing your celebrant: • Good celebrants are also great listeners and should

establish what ideas you have for your ceremony before contributing their own suggestions. • Do they offer to provide you with resources? These may include sample ceremonies, readings, vows and ring exchange wordings. • Is the celebrant willing to conduct a pre-wedding rehearsal at your venue to go over the organisational aspects of your ceremony with key members of your wedding party? • Is he or she is well presented and willing to dress to complement your colour scheme and your dress code? Remember your celebrant will be in all your ceremony photos.

Wedding Guide

your dress Choosing

W

ith hundreds of wedding dress styles to choose from, online and in stores, how do you pick just one wedding dress for your special day? The first thing to do is decide on how you want to look and feel on the day. Do you want to look sexy, understated, modern, chic, vintage or traditional? Once you decide this finding your dress will be much easier. Then take time to browse online and in magazines and note the gowns that you like. Visit a bridal gown specialist and try on several gowns. The key here is to keep an open mind and try on several gowns and styles. Make sure you test how comfortable a prospective gown is by moving around in it — sit down, dance, and walk

Choosing the

right attire

T

here can be so many factors to take into consideration. From making your bride to be & family happy, to the style of wedding, colour schemes, themes and locations. But at the end of the day most importantly you must be comfortably you. Black is the most popular colour for kiwi weddings. Either as a plain suit or more formal as a tuxedo ‘black tie’ look. If a traditional look is not for you, then coloured suits are a more modern option. Blue, Navy & shades of

grey are always popular. There is no definitive wedding etiquette when choosing how to dress your groom’s party. It really does come down to personal choice. Whatever the look you choose, look for quality & a well fitted suit, as you don’t want to be uncomfortably fidgeting on such a important day. At HVM we can cater for the whole party, whether purchased and professionally tailored for you, or hired. We take care to ensure it doesn’t look like a hired suit!

hen searching for your wedding venue, there are essential questions to be answered: • Is the date available that you require? • What’s the decor like? • Does it fit your wedding style? • Will you have to spend a lot of money on flowers and decorations to make it beautiful? • Is there an in-house caterer and do you like that type of food? • Is there a limit to which caterer you can use? • Are there adequate bathroom facilities? • Is there a liquor licence and will you be allowed to bring your own? • What’s the cancellation policy?

• Is there a payment schedule? • What deposit is required to hold the booking? • Are there any hidden costs? • Before you sign the contract. Read it carefully (read the fine print). What are the overtime charges? • Is there a room for a band and/or dancing? • Does the venue have a sound system? • Where will you take photographs? • Who will be supervising and troubleshooting on the day of your wedding? • Is there accommodation nearby for guests?

Wedding

You marriage vows are a time to express your love for each other in front of family and friends.

Celebrate C elebrate at the the

A

t The Comm, we know it’s your day, so let’s keep it like that; our venue is your venue! Decorate your way, eat your way, and entertain your way! We’ll supply the walls, beer garden

and of course the kids juice to the adult juice. Weddings can be costly, we understand the roots, it’s about declaring love and sharing with the whanau, so The Comm won’t charge you room hire or extra to bring your own catering. We just require a small deposit to make sure Uncle Dave doesn’t go too crazy on the bar, because we know our prices are the best in town! E-mail kit@thecommercial. co.nz and together we’ll celebrate the love!

our vows are an important part of the wedding ceremony and the memory of them should be with you throughout your married life together. Your vows are the key promises that are the foundation of a happy marriage. Chat with the marriage celebrant to check out the requirements as far as vows are concerned. Legally there could be a couple of important words that need to be included in the ceremony and your marriage celebrant will be happy to advise you. Discuss and agree with your partner whether you’ll both

say the same words or each write individual vows. You should agree on the general tone such as romantic or light hearted. If you are stuck for words write from the heart. Think about what you love most about your fiancé, what are his special qualities. Why do you love him and what does marriage mean to you? You might recall a special memory you share or talk about when you first fell in love. Your vows shouldn’t be too long. Write a draft, read it aloud to friends and adjust until the words express exactly what you want to say.

Finding your perfect

wedding caterer W

hat kind of menus do they offer? You’ll find most catering companies offer set menus and buffets, but check what else they can do. What’s the average price range of the menus and how many dishes are included? Planning a wedding is a master-class in budget management. Check the price range of the menu options on offer, ask how many dishes are included in each option, and remember to find out about any extras – for example, are there additional costs for kids’ meals or dishes for people with special dietary requirements. Have they ever catered an event at my wedding venue? Nowadays you can hold your reception at all sorts

of places; Weddings can be catered everywhere you can imagine - on boats in a harbour, in marquees in people’s gardens, in beautiful converted barns, even at the zoo! Each place is unique so it’s important to ask your caterer: • if they know your venue • when they will need access to the venue • how much time they will need to set up on the day. Can we have a tasting before we confirm our menu? And will there be an extra charge for this? Check whether your potential caterer offers this service. You don’t want to leave anything to chance – by having a tasting you know exactly what you are going to get on the day.

Wedding Guide

checklist Wedding Plan

Even the simplest wedding requires careful planning to ensure everything runs like clockwork 6 months or more before your wedding: Decide on the type of wedding, number of guests, style of reception and a budget

Choose the venue and time for the ceremony and reception Check venue and caterer availability and book Select and book a celebrant or meet the minister or priest at your church Secure your best man, groomsmen and bridal attendants’ Draw up a provisional guest list Decide on a wedding theme and colour scheme Choose the type of music Select your wedding gown Look for a photographer and/or videographer Order wedding transport 3 months before: Chosen attendant’s dresses and outfits Arranged hire and fitting for menswear Decided on the reception menu with the caterer Finalised ceremony details including music Ordered invitations and other stationery Compiled the wedding gift list or organised registry Ordered the cake Booked the florist

Bought the rings Chosen gifts for attendants, each other, parents and mementos for guests Booked wedding night accommodation and honeymoon travel Had a trial makeup and hairstyling Over the final 4-6 weeks Confirm all arrangements for the ceremony and reception Have final fittings for the groom and grooms men’s outfits, bridesmaids and bridal gown Organise hen and stag parties Prepare a final seating plan for the reception and write place cards Things to do week before wedding: Confirm your wedding-day beauty appointments and get your manicure and pedicure. (Better to leave this until you only have one or two days to go!) Buy the colours you end up using to fix any accidental lastminute chips. Grooms: Get a haircut. If you head to the barber when you’re more than a week out, your hair could look shaggy. Get it cut too close to the big day and you run the risk of looking like it’s sixth grade picture day. Grooms, pick up your suit and brides, your dress. Do one last fitting in the

store before taking it home — it will give you more time for any last minute alterations. Practice walking and dancing in your wedding shoes. Call guests who have missed the RSVP deadline. You’ll need the final headcount for your venue and caterer. Communicate the wedding-day schedule, any special duties, and important contact information to your parents, the wedding party, and your wedding coordinator. A document with call-times for everyone playing a large role in your day will help everything stay on schedule. Make final payments and if needed named separate envelopes for each vendor. Give them to a trusted friend or family member to distribute on your wedding day. Ask him or her to greet each vendor and be the point person for questions. Call and re-confirm every last detail with each of your vendors including date, time, and location. Don’t forget to provide them with contact info for their point person on the day-of. (You’ll be too busy getting ready to direct traffic!) Make sure your photographer has your shot list, your DJ has your song list, and that your venue knows when each

vendor will be arriving to set up. Create a seating chart for your reception and share the final version with your caterer, venue manager, reception host and hostess, and wedding coordinator. If you didn’t order escort cards with your stationery, it’s time to put on your DIY hat and make them. (Ask your craftiest ‘maid for some assistance if necessary!) Provide drivers with a schedule and list of names, phone numbers, and addresses for pickup and drop off. Shop and pack for your honeymoon. Though your girls will make sure you’re covered in the wedding-night lingerie department (what else are bachelorette parties for?!), bikinis, sun dresses, and SPF 50 won’t buy themselves. Writing your own vows? Making a toast? Prepare anything that requires a speech now. Gather a wedding-day emergency kit that includes fashion tape, safety pins, band-aids, mints, and a needle with thread that matches your dress. Pack a bag for your wedding night. Ask someone to deliver it to the hotel where you’ll be staying.
