Ratesarethemain waythe council fundsactivitiesandservices for the community.

Eachhouseholdis ratedaccording to the valueoftheirproperty. This means we allpitchin to pay for water services, roadmaintenance, animal management, swimmingpools, libraries,parks,sportsgroundsand muchmore.

InWhanganui we alsohave anumber ofuniqueassets to maintainthrough rates,including Rotokawau Virginia Lake, BasonBotanic Gardens, Cooks GardensStadiumand Event Centre, Whanganui WarMemorial Centre, theDurieHillelevator, theSarjeant Gallery te Whareo Rehua,the RoyalWhanganuiOperaHouse,NZ Glassworks Te Whare Tu¯huao Te Ao andtheWhanganui RegionalMuseum.

Theamountof ratesWhanganui District Council collectseach yearis determinedthroughthe Long-Term PlanandtheAnnualPlanprocesses.

Theseplansestablishthe council’s workprogramme,includingthe cost ofmaintaining councilassets. The cost ofdeliveringthis workprogramme willdeterminetheamountof ratesthe councilneeds to collect.

The councilengageswiththe communitythroughoutthisprocess.

WhanganuiDistrict Council ratesare payablein fourequalinstalments for the financial year1July2022 to 30 June2023.

Therearetwo remaininginstalment duedates for2022-2023–Wednesday, 22 February2023and Wednesday, 31May2023.

Ratesrebates

The rates rebateschemeprovidesa subsidy forlowincomehome owners. If yourhouseholdincomeisbelow $28,080then youmaybeeligible for a rates rebateofup to $700.

Ratepayersneed to apply to WhanganuiDistrict Council fora rates rebate.

Thosewhoareeligiblewillthen eitherhave their rates reduced by the amountofthe rebate, or receivea refundifthe rateshave beenpaidin full forthe year.
