Many local groups and organisations work together to ensure there’s a busy calendar of events to suit all tastes, from our renowned Cemetery Circuit motorcycle races each Boxing Day
to the annual Opera Week that showcases the best young talent from around New Zealand. Our greatest treasure is the Whanganui River and it has something for everyone, from sedate cruises on our historic river boats to the excitement of kayaking, and the adrenalin rush from following the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail in the upriver wilderness of Whanganui National Park. The richness of our Maori heritage and history appeals to visitors of all ages from around New Zealand and around the world. In May this year we gained a new fan when Prince Harry received a Maori welcome and joined a waka crew on the river. We’re also looking forward to giving you, your family and friends your own ‘royal’ welcome to our beautiful city and district.

Whanganui Love This Place
Whanganui WHERE YOU’RE ALWAYS WELCOME
Whanganui is a favourite weekend getaway for people from all over the country and increasing numbers of visitors are also taking a closer look at the affordable housing, educational and business opportunities, and great lifestyle choices that are on offer. Whether you’re looking for a tranquil spot or a buzz of people, Whanganui is full of special places. History abounds in the heritage buildings lining the main street with its colourful hanging baskets, and there are cafés and restaurants to suit all tastes. Moored nearby are the unique riverboats which take passengers on magical journeys upriver and introduce them to the timeless stories of the Whanganui. The coal-fired paddle steamer PS Waimarie even has its own museum and an historic tram carries visitors of all ages along its riverside track during holiday weekends.
Think Whanganui if you’re looking to take a break to recharge or if you’re thinking of a new way of life. High up on the bucket list, the natural beauty and history of the Whanganui River is one of our most sought after attractions. Jetboat trips and canoe journeys are popular ways to visit the area, and the development of the Mountains to Sea Cycle Trail, from Mt Ruapehu to the Tasman Sea at Whanganui, has added a popular new way of exploring the fern-clad canyons and native bush of the Whanganui National Park and river valley. Traditional marae and a range of accommodation enable visitors to enjoy local food and meet the locals. The snow and mountains are nearby and a great range of sporting and cultural events attract large numbers of participants and spectators year-round to the city’s top-class sports facilities and performance venues. Each year, Wanganui Opera Week (WOW) and the Artists Open Studios bring large numbers of visitors to the district and the Cemetery Circuit motorcycle races
roar into life every Boxing Day. Whanganui Vintage Weekend, held in January each year, sees the best of vintage music, vehicles and old-fashioned fun. The NZ Masters Games, held in Whanganui on alternate years, provides a festival of sport and fun for participants from around New Zealand and overseas. Meanwhile, the Whanganui River plays host to water sports including rowing, waka ama, jetsprints and the popular multi-sport Whanganui River Challenge, to be held this year from October 31-November 1. There’s also plenty to attract established national and international firms and entrepreneurs seeking a well connected, centrally located place to do business. Earlier this year Whanganui became one of the first New Zealand centres to complete a city-wide ultra-fast broadband rollout and it has won international status as one of the world’s 21 intelligent communities, as New Zealand’s only inclusion in the Smart 21 list. Our rural communities are increasingly linked by wireless internet. Whanganui has a well-established manufacturing base and plentiful well priced industrial land just minutes from the city centre. A warehousing and transport hub is serviced by a rail link. The business-friendly council welcomes inquiries and economic development advisers Whanganui and Partners, along with established business organisations, are keen to roll out the welcome mat for newcomers. So it’s time to explore Whanganui if you’re looking for a weekend getaway or you’re thinking of relocating to an affordable centre with plenty to offer families, retirees and businesses. It’s a place where that essential balance between work, family and recreational choices is easily achieved. If you want to meet some of our interesting locals and share their stories of why they love Whanganui, you’ll enjoy this episode of TV One’s This Town series, On Demand at http://bit.ly/1EpXydu

WANGANUI’S ROUND HOUSE
This 1950’s home originally known as "the house that Jock built", has never before been offered for sale such is the nostalgia of this family with so many happy memories. In earlier days this unique home became a huge attraction drawing busloads of photo taking tourists. The builder and his wife happily lived in a tent while they realised their dream of creating a home with excellent floor space, needing fewer repairs and costing less than conventional designs and construction methods of the day. Today’s buyer will likely be of the creative type as wall space is plentiful for artistic displays and family memorabilia. Daffodil Day is tomorrow and the Wanganui branch of the Cancer Society hopes to raise more money than ever. Last year $50,000 was raised in Wanganui and the goal this year is $60,000. Cancer Society staff in Wanganui, including Simon Aitken and Jane Beamsley (pictured), have been busy preparing for the annual fundraising effort with about 2500 bunches of daffodils, with other merchandise for sale. There will be collections around town tomorrow and Saturday. Volunteers, including the Wanganui Vintage Car Club, have been helping to distribute pre-orders to 90 businesses. All money raised locally stays in the region. PHOTO/STUART MUNRO 260815WCSMDAFF_DAY1

Turakina Maori Girls’ College’s board of trustees has appointed a facilitator as the school fights for survival. Education Minister Hekia Parata announced this month the boarding school in Marton had until September 11 to complete a consultation process, and that closure of the 110-year-old school was on the cards. The board of trustees has appointed TeHuia Bill Hamilton as facilitator to work through the process with the school and the ministry. Board chairwoman Trish Biddle-Amoroa said of two candidates Mr Hamilton was selected as the most suitable. A former school principal, Mr Hamilton has been chairman of the Maori Education Trust Board, a Treaty settlement negotiator for Nga Rauru, a manager of the Human Rights Commission and an adviser on Maori education to the Department of Education in the 1980s. Ms Biddle-Amoroa said the trustees welcomed community views on how to address issues faced by the school. The school has been under statutory management since 2012. The Education Review Office says recommendations are that the school needs to improve its financial and leadership performance and increase student numbers.
