2020 has been an extraordinary year for the Whanganui community.

W

e began with a hiss and a roar - the Vintage Weekend, and Opera School meant that the year started with a real bounce. But then the unthinkable happened.

COVID-19 and a lockdown of the city halted us in our tracks. People lost their jobs. Events were cancelled. Businesses wobbled. And coronavirus came to Whanganui.

On behalf of the District I want to honour the essential workers - the health professionals, the Police, the supermarket workers, the staff at QSI who made masks for the nation, the welfare officers at Council, and many others - who kept society ticking over during those weeks at Level 4.

When we opened up could anyone have predicted how Whanganui would surge? Our manufacturers rebounded quickly, and our farmers kept feeding the country, and then some. The Government began investing heavily in our District - a new MSD call centre, a new Police station, and money for roading were all announced.

And tourists from all over the country began discovering the most beautiful city in Aotearoa - and that’s not an idle boast. We were awarded that title at the Keep New

Zealand Awards last November, and we have been nominated to retain that status this year.

Our two primary capital projects received significant levels of Government support - the Sarjeant Gallery Project will preserve and expand this iconic building which will become a lightning rod for visitors, as well as displaying the amazing taonga of the collection.

And now the Port Regeneration has been funded. It’s tremendously exciting to have governmental support for a long-held vision that promises to reinvigorate the central port area. Employment, education and the environment are key aspects of this multifaceted project. The District and Regional Council are working with iwi/hapu, several key businesses and central government to create something beneficial for the whole community.

All this activity has been noticed. The ASB confirmed that Manawatu/Whanganui has risen 6 places in the Regional Economic Scoreboard to first place, while Massey University academic Hamish Gower stated that Whanganui was in the perfect position to lead New Zealand’s economic recovery.

Even as we face challenges - housing and climate change are just two immediate issues - let us keep enjoying all we have to offer in our gorgeous river valley. We have Whanganui Heritage Month coming up, followed by the Festival of Cultural Unity, then Christmas and the Boxing Day Motorcycle Races.

In the new year we have the Festival of Cricket, and Artists Open Studios - let alone the Opera Week and Vintage Weekend again, and the highlight for me - welcoming thousands of competitors for the NZ Masters Games.

As always, there is a lot going on in Whanganui and a lot planned for the future.

To everyone who has picked up a copy of ‘Celebrating Whanganui’, whether you are a long-term resident, a newcomer or a tourist, I hope you will find something of interest in our stunning district. And in the meantime let us remember the lessons of lockdown. Look after the most vulnerable, and wash your hands.

very year, the Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards celebrate places demonstrating environmental and beautification excellence. In 2019, Whanganui walked away with awards for both Most Beautiful City and Most Beautiful Street.

The judges recognised the city’s street art festival, shared pathways and downtown regeneration as all contributing to the beautification of Whanganui.

Paul Chaplow, from economic development agency Whanganui & Partners, says the award is a great acknowledgement of the initiatives that make Whanganui such a vibrant place to live and visit.

“The Most Beautiful City Award is a wonderful accolade for our city, and highlights the work that’s been done recently to make our city a more attractive and sustainable place.”

“Additionally, the awards are well known around New Zealand, and the 2019 award was a great contribution to lifting our profile as a destination.”

Following the win, Whanganui & Partners included the Most Beautiful City Award in its promotions to potential visitors.

“We like to encourage people to visit Whanganui for a weekend, and the Most Beautiful City Award exemplifies why. We

have a beautiful, vibrant city centre, we’re easy to get around and we’re surrounded by a flourishing natural environment.”

Chaplow says that visitors have been flocking to Whanganui over the past 12 months, which is further evidence that Whanganui is living up to its reputation.

“Our visitor industry had record breaking summer and winter holiday periods. We’re becoming a destination of choice for more and more Kiwis, which is great. At the same time, our resident population is also increasing. Clearly we’re becoming known as a great place to visit and live.”

Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards

hanganui will attempt to defend its title of New Zealand’s Most Beautiful City in this year’s Keep New Zealand Beautiful Awards, which celebrate environmental excellence.

For the second year in a row, Whanganui has been named a finalist in the category.

Whanganui beat Hutt City last year and, in 2020, will go head-to-head with Hamilton for the title.

Two of the three Best Street finalists are also in Whanganui - Rangiora St and Victoria Ave from Taupo Quay to Ingestre St. They are up against Main St, Cambridge.

Last year, Whanganui’s Ridgway St won the Best Street title.

There’s also recognition for Progress Castlecliff which is one of three finalists for the Community Group Award.

“Whanganui’s achievement in being a finalist in two categories, and now a third, in successive years is exceptional,” mayor Hamish McDouall said.

“This demonstrates the pride and commitment of our community to maintaining its built heritage and natural environment. It acknowledges the

initiatives local community groups have undertaken, often with council help, towards the sustainability and beautification of our city.”

Whanganui District Council’s Most Beautiful City entry highlighted collaborations by the council and several organisations, including roading contractor Downer, to establish a diversion for waste from construction and demolition sites, as well as the council’s ongoing support of local sustainability agencies to provide services and programmes to combat litter and educate the community about better options for managing waste.

Work to support the rejuvenation of heritage buildings, many of which received support from the council’s Heritage Grant Fund, was also part of the entry.

District councillor Helen Craig said the Most Beautiful City award would take into account the whole city, which the judges “will take on merit”.

Ridgway St claimed the 2019 Best Street Award, given to a street that clearly stands out for its beauty, cleanliness, plantings and sense of community pride. It was up

against Greytown’s Main St and Nelson’s Seymour Ave. “Ridgway Street is full of heritage buildings, offering a full representation of architectural styles between 1860 and 1960. There is a park in the centre of a street where a fire took down an old building, but the local council has beautified it with a three-storey mural on the building that overlooks the park. Their environmental, planting and beautification initiatives include a drinking fountain, and turning the park into a communal pop-up space. They created a live music stage out of wooden pallets and a shade sail, a community garden with the help of Common Ground Coffee, and flower beds.

“In March 2019, Whanganui held its first Whanganui Walls Festival. Artists employed more environmentally friendly practices by using spray guns to minimise impact to create eight beautiful murals on heritage building walls.”

2021 Downer New Zealand Masters Games

ummer would not be the same without iconic sporting events, and the New Zealand Masters Games, the largest annual multi-sport event in New Zealand, is no exception. Held yearly, the event alternates between Whanganui and Dunedin. The 2021 Downer New Zealand Masters Games will be held in Whanganui from the 5th to the 14th of February.

The Games attracts over 4000 participants. With over 50 sports to choose from, the Games is the place to meet personal sporting goals, connect with new people and celebrate well-being, for anyone from 20 years to triple digits.

Rachel O’Connor, Games Manager for the Downer New Zealand Masters Games, says: “What makes the Downer New Zealand Masters Games so unique is the participants.

Those taking part cover a wide age range and have a variety of goals. Winning gold is, of course, an outstanding achievement, but equally people come back again and again to reach new personal goals, to soak up the fun environment and make new mates along the way. The Games is more than the sport, when the sun goes down each day, competitors and friends meet at the Games Hub, set in the heart of the city, to party with a different band every night and share the day’s standout moments. Looking at the Games from a broad perspective – it’s all gold.”

The inaugural New Zealand Masters Games was held in Whanganui in 1989. Whanganui has a proud sporting history across multiple disciplines producing more Olympians, per head of population, than any other city in New Zealand. The Whanganui region has many

sporting venues, making Whanganui the perfect location for a multi-sports event.

Whanganui, one of New Zealand’s oldest settlements, offers plenty of other opportunities to relax and explore.

Whanganui is famed for the majestic Whanganui River, the city’s rich heritage, and vibrant arts scene. There’s no shortage of outdoor opportunities with beaches, bike trails, or boating on the Whanganui River.

Mainstreet Whanganui Caboodle: Whanganui’s largest street festival: Bringing Vintage to the City Every Saturday of Wellington Anniversary Weekend

T

he Whanganui Regional Museum is a world-class museum in the heart of Pukenamu Queens Park in downtown Whanganui. It has been described by Lonely Planet as ‘one of New Zealand’s better natural history museums.’ As well as a natural history collection featuring moa, beaked whales and extensive taxidermy specimens, there is a strong taonga Ma-ori presence and many artefacts relating to the social history of the Whanganui region.

In 1885, Whanganui jeweller and collector Samuel Drew opened a private museum in his home, available for visiting by the public. He offered his collection to the town in 1892 to form a public museum. A museum building was erected in Wicksteed Place (later Drews Avenue) to which his collection was transferred.

This is the building now occupied by Whanganui Musician’s Club. In 1917, Elizabeth Alexander bequeathed a sum of money to the town for a library and museum and the front half of the present-day museum was built. In the 1960s fundraising efforts were undertaken and the museum extension was constructed, making the building an interesting intersection of architectural periods.

The building has been earthquake strengthened during the past five years, and the fullyrefurbished museum reopened in 2019. With the reopening came an overhaul of all the exhibitions, and the creation of a new gallery space, the Samuel Drew Gallery, which houses temporary exhibitions.

Some of the highlights currently on display include paintings by Gottfried Lindauer, the waka Te Mata o Hoturoa, a precious moa egg, Photo / Supplied a sunfish, a taxidermy thylacine or Tasmanian tiger, and items from former businesses on Victoria Avenue. A current exhibition, Teeth, Talons & Taxidermy, features animals from all over the world, many of them over 100 years old. This exhibition is a great way to learn about animal conservation.

Whanganui’s only undercover shopping centre

Connecting communities

T

he relationship between Whanganui and Air Chathams is a cause for celebration.

Since the regional airline filled the void left when our national carrier moved out, the relationship has blossomed and even Covid-19 could not cause a rift. In fact, the relationship between Whanganui, near neighbour the Kapiti Coast and Air Chathams has strengthened.

The return to more comfortable Covid-19 Alert Levels brings with it a return to normality with good numbers and community support allowing the airline to bounce back from difficult times.

Chief operating manager Duane Emeny said Air Chathams is a family-owned airline with a strong focus on looking after the people and communities they serve.

“Air Chathams knows first-hand the importance of reliable, direct connections with major centres of commerce. Without that connection those communities will not grow to full potential and keep pace with other larger regional centres,” Duane said.

“We share our commitment to your community through our air services,

facilitating growth and ensuring a convenient direct link at a fair price.”

Duane said the airline also appreciated the open support communities such as Whanganui and Kapiti gave to Air Chathams services.

That support is reciprocated ten-fold by Air Chathams through a close association with the communities it serves, especially in sport.

For Whanganui that means a huge support of rugby, and in particular Heartland rugby.

While there is no Heartland championship competition this season because of Covid-19, Air Chathams has been a major supporter of the Wanganui Steelformerssponsored side in past seasons flying the team and officials to and from away fixtures saving money and player energy. There is little doubt that has been a major influence on Whanganui’s success in the division.

That is set to continue when things return to normal.

In the meantime, Air Chathams has found yet another way to reward its supporters with the introduction of the Green Miles Frequent Flyer Points programme.

Green Miles is an Air Chathams’ newlylaunched programme whereby by signing up and booking your flights online through your account, you will earn Green Miles every time you fly. Garage to Main Street

family-run gift store had outgrown its garage and moved to Whanganui’s main street.

Gifts from Within opened its doors in the former Petre House after business skyrocketed during the Covid-19 lockdown.

The business specialises in spirituality, selling crystals, essential oils, incense and ornaments.

Mother and daughter Lisa and Ashley Ledgerwood had been running their shop out of Ashley’s garage in Aramoho since February 2019.

“I have worked with spirits my whole life. But I didn’t want to be just a reader, I want to teach it. I want to give people tools to create a better life for themselves,” she said.

“In order to do that I needed this centre.”

Ashley said business was “absolutely crazy” during the Covid-19 lockdown, and the growth had allowed them to fulfill their dream of moving into the main street.

“It got to the point where I didn’t feel like I was in lockdown because I was constantly in the garage working,” Ashley said.

Working from their garage allowed them to get the shop off the ground and their name out there without the potential financial burdens.

“That was our starting point. It was always going to be more. But it gave us a place to grow without overheads and get our name out there.”

During lockdown, Ashley livestreamed on their Facebook page every Wednesday, generating more than 1000 views and hundreds of comments.

“It was fantastic, we loved it. It kept that communication open with people.

“It gave them a bit more in their day, they looked forward to it,” Ashley said.

The livestreams allowed the Ledgerwoods to stay connected and engaged with their viewers and customers during a tough time.

“The livestreams have become an extended family,” Ashley said.

The online success and subsequent business profits allowed them to move into Victoria Ave earlier than they had anticipated.

“When we were opened the shop we were looking at two years [before] we would be able to come to the main street.”

The Ledgerwoods believe the Covid-19 lockdown happened for a reason and the emphasis on mental health has never been more important.

“I think the world was meant to stop.”

Lisa encourages people to come by and see what they are about.

They have expanded the store by adding a spiritual centre in the building above.

The spiritual centre focusses on spiritual health and teaching. Lisa is lookin g to bring in a yoga and t’ai-chi practitioner to complement her.

“Even if it’s not your thing, you never know until you try it,” Lisa said.

“We have had people who have admitted they weren’t interested to begin with end up staying with us,” Ashley said.

New real estate figures show a big jump

N

ew figures show that the median price of a house in Whanganui has shot up more than a third in the past year. The figures, released by Real Estate Institute of New Zealand show the median price of a house in Whanganui in August last year was $280,000. For the same month this year, the median price shot up to $375,000 - a rise of $95,000, or 33.9 per cent.

Bayleys Whanganui Residential and Lifestyle Consultant Duncan Ashby said the price rise could be put down to a lack of stock in the market. “There’s a bit of a catch-22 going on at the moment where there are a lot of people considering putting their house on the market, but the question is where do they go?” Ashby said. “That’s what is pushing the median price up. There’s so many buyers in Whanganui but there’s so little here to choose from. It’s just supply and demand really.”

For first home buyers, Ashby said that a market that was already looking tough is now looking even tougher, particularly with a rise in people looking to purchase investment properties in the district. “Those first-home buyers

are fighting for affordable properties with investors. There’s a new wave of investors coming to Whanganui.

Affordable housing two to three years ago was in the $200,000 to $350,000 price range. Now we’re talking $300,000 to $500,000.”

As well as an increase in prices, the amount of houses sold on the market increased too, with 58 sold in August last year compared to 80 in August this year.

Owen Vaughan, editor of online property platform OneRoof said the trends seen in Whanganui are some of the most significant across the country.

“What we’ve been able to see is a surge of growth in the region since the end of lockdown. That’s mainly been fuelled by affordable prices in the region, which has been the story for the last couple of years,” Vaughan said.

“We’re seeing phenomenal growth and it’s because prices are really low in the area. People see it as an attractive place to buy property and invest in property.”

Ashby agrees, saying that low interest rates have had a huge effect on the property market. With money

in Whanganui median house prices in the bank bringing in a very small return, coupled with the attraction of incredibly cheap borrowing, he says property is the obvious direction.

“We came out of lockdown, people saw the opportunity of low interest rates, and for first home buyers and investors alike it was an opportunity to get in the market quick. I think that’s what’s spurred the massive increase in numbers.”

In terms of where to from here, both Ashby and Vaughan have a similar outlook, primarily based on where the market is currently sitting and where it’s expected to move to nationally.

“Nationally house prices are tipped to rise next year, and I can’t see any indication why Whanganui would be any different to the national picture.

From anecdotal evidence we’ve seen, agents are crying out for more listings,” Vaughan said. As an agent himself, Ashby agrees. “The crux of the situation is really the lack of stock.

That’s why prices don’t seem to be slowing down and if anything they’re just going to carry on going up.”

Charity golf event raised $21,000

his year's NZME Charity Golf event has smashed last year's fundraising total with more than $21,000 raised.

On Friday 21 February 2020, NZME and Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui teamed up for their second annual fundraiser at Belmont Links, raising $21,359 for Whanganui's Riding for the Disabled (RDA) charity. The 2019 event raised just over $13,000. NZME's event organiser David Shaw was blown away by the community support.

"We just want to thank all the competitors and sponsors for making it a great day and helping us crush last year's event," Shaw said. RDA head coach Wendy Sellars was thrilled with the result. "Pretty excited. We were so humbled that we are the recipient for the fundraiser once again."

Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui owner Hayden Gibson credited the community's generosity for this year's massive total. "Rapt with the outcome. Absolutely awesome result.

Whanganui put their hands in their pockets and really supported the cause."

The auction held during 2019's event raised $4000. This year's auction more than tripled that, with $13,000 raised.

"It sets a very high bar for next year," Gibson said.

Blooming Beautiful

wo families that have been doing business together since 1947 have celebrated a blooming new initiative this year.

Rose-growing business Matthews Roses was established by Tom Matthews and is now owned by his son Bob, while Chris Cvitanovich is the third-generation owner of Wanganui Garden Centre, set up by his grandfather Ivan. The two businesses have been working together since 1947 and had a joint celebration for their 70th anniversaries in 2017.

Now, as part of his “My Rose Collection” range, Bob Matthews has bred a new rose exclusively for Wanganui Garden Centre to celebrate their long association of growing gorgeous gardens together.

The rose is named A Gardener’s Dream (Mattrae) in tribute to Chris’ mother, the late Rae Cvitanovich.

“I remember coming in here [Wanganui Garden Centre] as a kid, watching Chris’ mum and dad doing jobs - and his grandfather too,” Matthews said.

“Breeding roses is a labour of love. I’ve been doing it since I was a kid. An individual variety could take six to 10 years to breed. Out of every 1000 seedlings, you might only pick 10 to look at - and you might throw all those away.”

Matthews Roses are bred spray-free and rarely get disease, he said.

The new rose is bred from My Mum, one of Matthews Roses’ most popular varieties and a top seller at Wanganui Garden Centre. Matthews named it after his mother, Pearl.

“It’s very successful - we sell mega of it,” Cvitanovich said.

“It’s the most in-demand bush rose we’ve ever sold. Last year we sold 100 of it. It’s very healthy, strong growing - it ticks all the boxes.”

Cvitanovich is delighted to have A Gardener’s Dream (Mattrae) to sell exclusively during 2020.

“It’s good to have something to put my mother’s name out there,” he said.

The rose is described as “charming clusters of fragrant apricot blooms with vintage ruffle form. An easy-care plant, this multiple flowering beauty lives up to its name in every way, making it a gardener’s dream”.

The rose will be released nationwide next year to Matthews Roses’ other stockists.

106 years of Monumental Masonry

I

f ever a business in Whanganui can point to a tangible sign of its enterprise, then Anderson Memorials is one of them.

From the historic Heads Road cemetery to the currently expanding Aramoho cemetery, and in cemeteries in neighbouring districts, headstones made by the company are there in vast numbers.

In May 2014, Anderson Memorials celebrated its centennial. The business spans five generations. It started with AP Anderson, his son Les, Les’s son Richard and today, Richard’s son Tony Anderson, the great grandson of the founder who now runs the business and is still working from the same Aramoho site where it all began.

Anderson Memorials is the only local manufacturer of memorial headstones in Whanganui and whilst firmly rooted in Aramoho, the family business has branches in Palmerston North and Feilding, and that spread has been responsible for its growth.

It all started with hammer and chisel, before pneumatic hammer. Sandblasting followed, even though that still meant they had to mark the letters onto the stone. They still use sandblasting today but computers are used to mark out the inscription before

the masking is transferred onto the stone and sandblasted. Very little work is in marble these days, with the majority done in granite.

Anderson Memorials are foundation members of the NZ Master Monumental Masons Association which was formed in 1945 and it was at this time that granite became more popular.

Anderson Memorials were proud to accept two awards at the recent New Zealand Master Monumental Masons Association AGM in Wellington. These

were for the overall Supreme Award for Memorial Excellence and the Memorial Restoration Award.

Tony said “ I, and my experienced and talented staff try our very best to create a suitable memorial, and it is very satisfying for us to achieve something special for the families, who entrust us to create an enduring focal point that will last for generations. Granite is a beautiful natural stone and we are always working to personalise with new designs and ideas.”

fter two years of hard work and fundraising Wanganui Riding for the Disabled (RDA) were pleased to announce in July 2020, the successful purchase of their premises in London St. Operations manager Wendy Sellars said the purchase means RDA now owns 80 per cent of the facilities they use every day for housing horses and working with disabled riders. “We lease the other 20 per cent from Whanganui District Council,” she said. “We raised $46k from fundraising activities, $170k was received from grants and the shortfall came from two last-minute loans.

“We are extremely grateful to the Four Regions Trust for the contribution of three grants totalling $150k, to Gallaghers in Hamilton for a donation of $20k, and to the local trust and anonymous benefactor who provided us with a loan for the shortfall.”

Sellars said RDA has been exceptionally lucky in the support they have received from donations and fundraising events including the Charity Golf Tournament run by NZME which owns the Chronicle, Christmas at the Races, Give a Kid a Ride in a Truck Day, sausage sizzles and much more.

RDA has been part of the Whanganui community since 1973 and Sellars said the organisation prides itself on being able to provide goal-based riding activities that help to increase the ability, strength and confidence of people with physical, intellectual, emotional and social challenges.

Each week up to 70 riders are assisted by Sellars, Robyn Mann and Lance Sellars, supported by “a wonderful group of 46 volunteers”. One rider who has experienced noticeable benefits is 7-year-old Jess Perkins from Bulls. Jess has cerebral palsy and her mum Annie Clarkson said the benefits of riding at RDA have been very noticeable in her daughter.

“After only a single term at RDA Jess’ leg and core strength had noticeably increased. She was able to do more physical activities with her friends and actually participate in challenges and competitions, rather than sitting and watching.” Clarkson said Jess’ balance has also improved, along with her confidence, and she is more able to maintain her mobility in crowded places. RDA still needs to fundraise in order to repay loans and cover regular costs but Sellars said knowing the milestone of ownership has been achieved is a fantastic feeling.

Learn to Fly at the Wanganui Aero Club

inety years ago, when the Wanganui Aero Club was building what is now the Whanganui Airport, learning to fly was the domain of the brave, perhaps foolhardy, but definitely the dreamers. Aircraft of the time were flimsy affairs made of wood, Irish linen, and wire. Their engines were heavy, low on power and not particularly reliable.

And the aircraft themselves were notoriously difficult to fly with marginal stability. They were, by today’s standards, flammable death traps, temperamental creatures which would give up the will to fly with little notice, nor care about where they were.

Today the aircraft that are available to learn to fly in are very different pieces of machinery to those at the beginnings of flight. Safety and reliability are dominant criteria in their design, as is being easy to fly.

This has opened up the opportunity to learn to fly to many more. Flying is still exciting, but learning to fly is achievable by anyone with the urge. Most who learn to fly these days are still the dreamers, but they do not need to be overly brave, just ready to push their limits a little to expand their skill sets.

Learning to fly is still challenging, but not excessively so. Much of today’s flying training focusses on safety, planning and

preparing to deal with possible problems, and practicing repeatedly, basic skills designed to ensure today’s pilots are not only safe, but capable flyers. While ninety years ago, such adventurism was very much the domain of men, today no barriers exist to prevent anyone with a desire, from learning to fly.

Tiny treasures on Taupō Quay

A

flag sign on Taupo- Quay bears an intriguing silhouette image of a little girl towing a toy moose behind her. Inside the Evelyn and Moose baby, toddler and children's boutique, Rita Snowden is at her sewing machine, working on a small dress made of unicorn print fabric. The garment has a label that matches the logo on the sign outside. "Evelyn is my granddaughter," she said. "She is 9 and her brother Quin, who is 4, has the nickname Moose."

The nickname also has a history and once belonged to a family friend. "I asked my daughter for her approval to use the name and a friend designed the logo," Snowden said. "I wanted something unique and it seemed right to acknowledge my grandchildren because they model my new designs for me."

The shop is filled with limited edition small garments, all designed and made

by Snowden, made from natural printed fabrics. "I have had to find suppliers willing to sell me fabric in smaller quantities because I like to make just one garment in each size with the same fabric," she said.

"I want to give parents something unique for their children to wear - something they won't find anywhere else."

There are romper suits, dresses, shirts, pants, overalls and laminated cotton raincoats, all beautifully cut and sewn by Snowden. As well as the clothing, she makes washable, cotton breastfeeding pads and stocks a range of toys and accessories made by other small business owners whose work fits with her ethos.

There are heirloom wool blankets knitted by Claire Smit and little fabric bags made by Trish Flutey.

While recovering from a stroke two years ago, Snowden said she needed to find new purpose in her life and was determined not to "give up and do nothing". "I was a quilter and I had achieved a high level of proficiency, so working with fabrics was a natural choice. ”Making small garments seemed achievable and I discovered that I loved it." She set up a workshop at home and, after selling some of her work at weekend markets, Snowden completed a small business course which gave her the confidence to move to the next phase.

Sizes in the Evelyn and Moose range start from newborn and go up to 7 yearsplus. Despite the bespoke nature of her clothing range, Snowden keeps the prices within an affordable range and says the

quality means her garments are good enough to pass on, once outgrown. She can also make to order and is currently exploring the possibility of adding a women's clothing range to her repertoire.

Snowden said she would like to see more foot traffic on Taupo- Quay and encourages Whanganui people to visit her shop, as well as neighbouring businesses. Evelyn and Moose is open from 9am to 12.30pm from Thursday to Sunday at shop 1, 45 TaupoQuay and purchases can also be made via the Evelyn and Moose Facebook page.

The southern North Island is one of New Zealand’s growth areas for the forest industry. Many of the forests established in the early to late 1990’s are now mature and ready for harvest and although there was widespread scaremongering about the ‘Wall of Wood’, limitations on infrastructure and manpower availability have effectively smoothed this to a longer term harvest profile.

Harvest returns over the past 5 years have been strong and relatively stable in the face of some challenging global economic conditions. Covid threw a spanner in the works when China went into lockdown in January followed by NZ in May which has been a double whammy for our industry and resulted in a volatile pricing structure. While it is unlikely that we will see a return to export prices over $130/JAS in the next 12 months, current levels are very close to the three year average and resulting per hectare returns continue to demonstrate much better returns than many other investments.

Carbon has driven some big changes to the investor profile of the forest industry and many investors are now enjoying returns throughout the entire rotation from carbon sales. Carbon has rejuvenated what had the potential to be a somewhat sunset industry and greenfield forest establishment has been increasing year on year for the past decade. The carbon price has now broken through the $35/ unit cap imposed by the Govt and is tipped to increase further. While there has been much angst and commentary around the blanket planting of productive farmland, carbon does provide a very good alternative to arable farming on marginal to average land and, so long as there is a balance, carbon can help provide a strong and diversified cashflow for farming operations.

Forestry can provide very healthy returns on investment, however, like many other investments, it has to be managed right. The value of the investment is only as good as the quality of the crop and, as with many investments, the best returns are achieved through cost control and value maximisation while minimising risk. hanganui’s new Upokongaro Bridge was launched just hours before the nation went into Covid-19 lockdown on Tuesday 25th March 2020.

High tide was at noon, the river was low and calm, and conditions were perfect when Emmetts Civil Construction and Crane Services staff put the new and long-awaited foot and cycle bridge across the Whanganui River yesterday.

The 130m long suspension bridge was rolled to the river’s edge on two trucks, lowered on to a pontoon by a crane, and then floated across the river.

On the Upokongaro side it was hoisted on to the abutment prepared for it by another crane, then bolted into place.

Papaiti Rd was closed at two points for the operation, and spectators were few.

Power lines that had been in the way had been put underground.

It had been a long wait for this bridge, which was supposed to be in place by April last year.

It was held up by the necessity for the Whanganui District and Horizons Regional councils to liaise with the local Nga Paerangi hapū under the Whanganui River’s 2017 Te Awa Tupua legislation.

The 130m bridge is a vital link in the Mountains to Sea/Te Ara Tuhono cycleway but it is still not known when the foot and cycle bridge between Upokongaro and Papaiti will open for use.

Whanganui District Council said an easement is still needed for the bridge.

An easement is a right agreed between a landowner and another party to use a property for a particular purpose, and can be registered against the property’s title.

An easement across the bed of the river has always been a requirement and is being worked on between the area’s relevant

he 2019 population estimate from Stats NZ marked a new record: 47,300 people live in Whanganui. This number only reinforced what those of us in town already knew, which was that our home is growing.

A popular venue

T

he Wanganui Jockey Club is the oldest surviving racing club in the country still racing at the original venue since 1848.

The club is also the oldest sporting club in New Zealand.

On the 20th May 1997 in less than two hours fire destroyed 90 years of racing history in Whanganui as the old grandstand at the racecourse was gutted. The old stand had survived numerous earthquakes and had been used by many organisations over the years, including the army during World War 2. Fortunately the blaze was contained in the wooden building and the Eulogy Lounge which was subsequently gutted and refurbished at a cost of $600,000. Ten days later the club was able to host the winter meeting with little inconvenience. "Thanks to my coach Gary Clark, and Hayden [Gibson] and the Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui crew for the carpark, and the sponsors," Davies said.

A clearly emotional Clark also thanked Gibson and the Mitre 10 MEGA Wanganui staff for letting them use their land as the training base for his charges, including lights in the winter. "I'm a little bit taken aback, I didn't expect this," Clark said. "I've got some fantastic skaters, some real athletes, and they've done me proud."

In the Masters grade, there was a special recognition prize given to the Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club's Master's crew, who had won 25 medals, including 11 golds, at the National Masters regatta at Lake Ruataniwha.

A regular nominee and multiple time past winner of Coach of the Year is Collegiate's Alec McNab, and Sophie Redmayne made sure to thank him along with the supportive families when she accepted the Junior Team of the Year award on behalf of the Senior Girls 4x400 Sprint Relay squad.

Sports Awards Redmayne, Emma Osborne, Ana Brabyn, Tayla Brunger, and Genna Maples had an outstanding season, including a new national record in winning the NZ Secondary Schools title along with a silver at the NZ Athletics Championships against centre teams.

"Relay's a huge part of our athletics at school and we're really delighted to receive this award," Redmayne said.

Just as pleased was the Whanganui Premier Men's Rink Hockey squad, who received the Senior Team of the Year award for winning the first national title for their club since 1988. They cordially invited local kids to give "alternative" sports a go while searching for a code that suited them.

Lifestyle Farmers Club

nce upon a time farmers were farmers and townies were townies.

Nowadays the lines are more blurred, and we have seen the rise of the ‘lifestyle block holders’. The name ‘lifestyle block holder’ of course covers many kinds of properties and operations, but they are in need of many of the products and services provided at Wanganui Veterinary Services and Wanganui Farm Supplies.

So, in early 2019 the Lifestyle Farmers Club was established for the Whanganui area by the two above businesses partnered together.

The inaugural meeting took place at Andrew and Jane Toy’s property on Western Line where they generously shared their ideology and ambitions for their small block.

What shone through was a care for the land and their animals and their aim to live off their land, enhancing what they have, but also minimising their impact on the environment.

Those attending had a very enjoyable afternoon and it soon became obvious that the Lifestyle Farmers Club was established, also that it had more facets to it than originally thought.

In November 2019 the second Sunday afternoon meeting took place at the

property of Tom Dinwiddie, where we covered fencing, bee keeping, thistle control and soil maintenance. We finished the day with a short talk and beer sampling from a local craft brewer named Andy from Roots Brewing Co. The aim is to provide the chance to view and share in other people’s efforts and aspirations, the ability to learn about and access products and services, provide a directory of other resources, but especially the opportunity to meet new people, socialise and have a sense of belonging to a group that represents them in some way.

On an educational basis the club intends to hold at least three afternoons per year on different properties covering a variety of topics on each day, coupled with a club newsletter and relevant articles provided to the group. The ability to meet people who have a huge amount of experience and knowledge in different fields allows people to not just rely on businesses whose focus has largely been on traditional farming.

Another advantage of networking within the club is to share the costs of some items that are sold in larger amounts, which are again aimed at traditional farming.

While the products are still appropriate for lifestyle blocks, they are not commercially

available in small packs, so to make them economically viable it is important to work together.

No matter what your situation, if you have a lifestyle block you will most likely find something in the Club that is of interest to you, not the least of which will be a whole lot of fun. You can join the Lifestyle Farmers Club by contacting Wanganui Veterinary Services or Wanganui Farm Supplies.

Whanganui golfing sensation

sensational 2019 season earned Whanganui golfing ace Tara Raj a crack at international duty, where she joined five other Kiwis to play at a prestigious international women’s amateur tournament in February, 2020. Carmen Lim, Fiona Xu, Vivian Lu, Darae Chung, Jessica Huang, and Raj played in the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Championship on February 12-15 at the Waterside Course at the Siam Country Club in Thailand.

These six promising players had all received invites to play in the third year of the competition after fellow countryman Wenyung Keh came close to capturing the first instalment of the tournament two years ago, losing in a playoff.

The Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific champion received an invite to AIG Women’s British Open, the Evian Championship, the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship, and the Honda LPGA Thailand which was played the following week. Raj, a four time Whanganui women’s open champion, was in sensational form of late with her last big tournament perhaps sealing the deal for Thailand. In December 2019, Raj led the Manawatu Whanganui team as No1 into

second place in the New Zealand Women’s Interprovincial (formerly the Toro) in Napier.

Raj was the undisputed player of the tournament going through unbeaten in individual play beating former New Zealand Amateur champion Vivian Lu twice in the space of two days. Lu was one of Raj’s team mates in Thailand.

The teenage golfing sensation took out the National Junior title at the 2019 Ray White Whanganui Sports Awards in November 2019 after proving she could compete with young adults by winning the Women’s Harewood Open on the Charles

In July 2019, she added the Waikato Women’s Winter Strokeplay title to her rapidly-growing list of golfing achievements.

Whanganui economy shows resilience through COVID-19

hile COVID-19 has made 2020 a uniquely challenging year for businesses, the Whanganui economy not only survived the crisis, but boomed in the months following lockdown.

Gaelle Deighton, interim Chief Executive of economic development agency Whanganui & Partners, says the winter of 2020 saw local records set in consumer spend, visitor spend and house prices.

“We had great momentum going into the year, and we could see during the lockdown that Whanganui wasn’t being as badly affected as many other parts of New Zealand. This meant our businesses and people were able to pick up largely where they left off after lockdown.”

The economic development agency keeps a close eye on a number of indicators that reflect on the overall health of the economy.

“We look at consumer spend not just to get a sense of how well our retailers are doing, but to understand consumer confidence in our district. We also look at house prices as an indication of people

feeling like they want to live and invest here,” Deighton said.

“This data is telling us that our economy is on the right track. People are seeing this as a great place to be, they’re feeling secure in their own futures and the future of the district.”

Deighton says the high-performing economy speaks to the underlying resilience

of the district’s businesses and overall economy. She says the economic future of the district looks bright.

“We’re currently likely to see our highest ever annual consumer spend, which is amazing considering the significant interruptions to business this year,” Deighton said.

Annual event for health and wellbeing

T

he winners’ dais of the 2019 Pak’nSave 3 Bridges Marathon was the domain of the enthusiastic amateurs at Moutoa Gardens on Saturday morning 14th December 2019.

There was a big turnout of well over 800 runners and walkers who tackled the course in overcast but warm conditions, with only a small breeze, allowing a couple of the leading runners to blitz through with very quick times.

In total, there were eight race length events for both racing disciplines on the 10.5km long course, with the headline 42.2km marathon run and walk races taking four laps.

An exciting new development was that the marathon and half marathon are now IAAF [International Association of Athletics Federations] and AIMS [Association of International Marathons and Distance Races] certified.

“That means the course has been measured and meets international criteria, which is great news for serious competitors. Their times can now be used as an official time for any events requiring a qualifying time.”

In a bid to lead by example in its wellbeing mantra, the Whanganui District

Health Board entered more than 100 staff in the corporate division of the annual event.

The huge turnout of staff from Whanganui’s biggest employer strode out among runners and walkers from throughout the rest of the community.

DHB entries include radiologists, pharmacists, accountants, management, paediatricians, surgical and medical staff, mental health workers, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and public health promoters.

It was the first time the DHB had been involved with the 3 Bridges and was part of the organisation’s WorkWell programme.

WorkWell is a nationwide initiative designed to help workplaces conduct their everyday business in a way that leads to improved staff wellbeing. This, in turn, allows a staff member to achieve their full potential for the benefit of themselves and their organisation.

“An active lifestyle and physical exercise are parts of the DHB’s holistic approach to staff wellbeing and so the 3 Bridges fits in perfectly,” spokesman Mark Dawson said.

The Whanganui DHB achieved bronze accreditation for WorkWell, and it is promoting the programme to other businesses and organisations in the region.

The Great Pie Hunt

P

ie making is in the family for Chaise Leslie and, after years of being out of business, he’s up to his elbows again in his family’s tradition.

In July this year he opened up his new bakery Chasing Pies in Liffiton St. Chaise is no stranger to pie making, after spending countless mornings in his father Bruce’s business.

Bruce Leslie, now operating Maggie’s Pies in Cross St, owned One Better Home Made Pies, which was located where Hunting and Fishing on Carlton Ave now sits.

“I would always make a tray of pies before going to school,” Chaise said.

“I always had a passion for it.”

In 2001, Bruce sold the shop to Pete and Marie Hamilton, who turned the shop into Pete’s Pies. They were there until 2010 when a fire took out their shop and they moved out Castlecliff to open Maggies Pies on Cross St. Chaise Leslie bought the business back from the Hamiltons in 2013 and had three successful years of business. However, he walked away from the business after his partner and unborn son died in a car accident in 2016.

“I was on ACC for three-and-a-half years after the car accident.”

Bruce bought Maggies Pies from Chaise to alleviate the financial burden and still runs the Cross St bakery.

Chaise knew he wanted to get back into the pie business and, after seeing the empty shop on Liffiton St, decided now was the right time.

Chasing Pies offers 30 different pies, a range of sandwiches, rolls and sweet treats as well as barista-made coffee. He hopes to add chicken and chips to the menu soon.

Like all good ideas, the name of the shop was created over a couple of beers at the pub, Chaise said.

“We wanted something new and something catchy.”

He said it has been great to get his feet back into the business and looks forward to what the future holds.

“We are doing bloody well, really.

Surprised by the support and turnover already, I’ll definitely do all right here.”

Bringing home the bacon for over 50 years

F

armland has been producing quality small-good products for over 50 years. Starting in a butcher shop and now, three generations later in a modern plant located in Bulls in the Rangitikei district it is one of New Zealand’s leading producers of Christmas hams, premium quality bacon, cooked deli meats and speciality goods.

Back in 1964, George Davis owned a butcher shop in Broadway Ave, Palmerston North. George’s sons, Russell and Allan Davis set up Cobblestone Bakeries producing pies and bakery products for local dairies.

In 1978, Cobblestone Bakeries sold to a large multinational food company. Allan then started Farmland Meat Company and purchased the 800-acre property where Farmland is today.

Throughout the ‘80s saw the farm being developed and the first factory was built. During the ‘90s the factory extended to include the production of meats, including pre-packed corned silverside supplied to supermarket butcheries. Cooked ham and deli meats products were also developed and a new temperature-controlled distribution centre built.

From 2001 to 2011 a major expansion of the plant took place to more than double capacity. The distribution centre was also extended to increase storage capacity by 300%.

2015 onwards saw investment continued in the plant to upgrade amenities and technology, including new equipment to cater for convenience packs, and the launch of our pre-packed sliced meat ranges.

Today, you will find the company still passionately owned and run by Whanganui’s Davis family, employing over 120 staff committed to providing premium meats, the best customer service and products that set the benchmark on a daily basis.

Bridal gowns support charity

he local bridal shop, Etcetera, has supported the local Cancer Society pop-up store to help raise money for the Whanganui Cancer Society.

The temporary store called Daffodil Bridal received more than 70 donated new wedding dresses. Kirsty Simpson, of Etcetera, said they were about to receive the dresses from New Zealand designer Katie Yeung to discount in their store. However, Yeung said it would be a good opportunity to donate some of the older stock to make room for fresh styles. Simpson said Etcetera loved the idea. “It’s so incredibly generous of them”.

Simpson said the bridal shop has had enormous support from all over the country in the last two years. Brides everywhere, from Wellington to Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Hamilton and more, have come to get their dresses for their special day. “It was really nice that we get to now give back and we thought the Whanganui Cancer Society was the perfect charity to support with this.” Jane Burgess, from the Whanganui Cancer Society, said the organisation was “beyond grateful” to Simpson for her generosity.

Daffodil Bridal set the prices for all the dresses at $250. “There’s always a bit of downtime between Daffodil Day and Relay for Life so this came at the perfect time really,” Burgess said.

The Cancer Society were hoping to make $5000 to $10,000 from this venture.

Another 130 wedding dresses were also on sale in the store, and a cut of each sale also went to the Cancer Society.

The Daffodil Bridal store closed in mid September, 2020.

he new Wanganui Proparts store had its Grand Opening Day on Saturday August 29, and it’s true what they say; it’s better late than never. Due to Covid-19 lockdowns this event was put on hold, even though Proparts store has been open for business for several months.

Proparts NZ and Elite Mechanical & Engineering Services have combined forces to provide a great service with a wide range of products available. Mike Mooney is the new Wanganui Proparts franchise owner; Mike Palmer is the man with the parts knowledge, he looks after shop sales; and out in the Engineering shop, if you need help there, Murray Sutherland is the man to talk to.

It was great to see a good turnout of cool vehicles to support this new parts store. Hot rods through to more modern performance cars lined the street, as well as a cool old Foden truck dubbed ‘Rockon’ complete with pinstriping.

Proparts Wanganui stocks a huge range of parts for muscle cars, classics, hot rods, strip, circuit, speedway and jet sprint, sourced locally and from overseas; Proparts imports directly from more than 600 suppliers.

You’ll also find a good range of lubricants, car care products, tools, and more. However if you need a custom part the team in the engineering workshop can fabricate it for you, whether it’s a pedal box, battery box, fuel tank, roll cage etcetera.

The workshop is fully equipped, including a water jet than can cut up to 120mm think steel plate, and a huge metal folder. Elite is also Wanganui’s largest stockiest of sheet

Whanganui Growing as an Events Destination

W

hanganui loves to get together, and a vibrant events calendar gives us the chance to celebrate our arts, sport, heritage and culture. Recent years have seen our recurring events, like Vintage Weekend, Opera Week, Masters Games, Artists Open Studios and Cemetery Circuit, getting bigger and drawing in visitors from around New Zealand. New events are also being added to our calendar, giving locals and visitors new opportunities to discover the best of Whanganui.

The city’s reputation as a destination for conferences is also growing. In November 2019, Whanganui hosted its biggest ever business event, the Labour Party Conference, which attracted 630 delegates, along with family, MPs and media to Whanganui.

“This was our first conference of this scale, and we knew it was important to get it absolutely right on the day,” said Jonathan Sykes from economic development agency Whanganui & Partners. “A lot of work went into planning and organising the event, which paid off in spades.”

Sykes says Whanganui has a lot of advantages as a conference destination.

“We’re a central city to get to and an easy city to get around,” Sykes said. “Our climate is good, there’s plenty to do during down-time, and our heritage venues add a unique point of difference.”

“Delegates were also impressed with our city’s hospitality. We had feedback that the visitors felt welcomed and treated well while they were here, which is testament to the great community we have and especially the friendliness of our businesses.”

Businesses also enjoyed having the conference in town, with consumer spending data over the weekend of

the Labour Party Conference showing spending rose by 15.9% compared to the same weekend 2019.

Sykes says, the significant impact the conference had on businesses demonstrates the advantage of having conference-goers based in the central city rather than a conference centre.

“We’re lucky in Whanganui to have centrally-located venues that allow attendees to explore our city rather than spending all their time in a conference centre. It’s a win for everyone, and we look forward to Whanganui hosting more large scale conferences in the future.”
