What is Diabetes?

D

iabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

TYPE 1 DIABETES

If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at

Simply aring Hea any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day.

TYPE 2 DIABETES

If you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

Electric Bikes as Part of a Healthy Lifestylle

E

xercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle and many people suffer from not exercising enough. Either they are so busy that it is difficult to fit in a sensible fitness regime, or they may have health problems that restrict the sort of exercise that they can undertake. Electric bikes are an ideal solution to both of these problems as they are designed to be ridden in the pedal assist mode.

Physiotherapy Hand Cllinic

Once it is understood that riding an electric bike doesn’t mean that the rider has given up having any kind of input at all, the benefits become much clearer. Riders who are less able can build their fitness by using higher levels of assistance at the start of their health plan and gradually reduce the level of assistance as their fitness levels increase.

W

e specialise in the treatment of injuries to the elbow, forearm, wrist and hand. Our team is comprised of Juliet and Lynne who are both physiotherapists and Iike who is an occupational therapist. We have all undertaken postgraduate training in hand therapy.

We provide hands-on treatment for a range of conditions and injuries, as well as providing exercise, advice and splints. If you would like to speak with us or arrange an appointment, we can be contacted on (06) 3451198.

The Basics of Oral Health

H

ealthy habits, including brushing and flossing, can prevent tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Tooth decay and gum disease can lead to pain and tooth loss. You can prevent most problems with teeth and gums by taking these steps: • Brush your teeth 2 times a day with fluoride toothpaste. • Floss between your teeth every day. • Visit a dentist regularly for a check-up and cleaning. • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks. • Don’t smoke or chew tobacco. • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

WHAT CAUSES TOOTH DECAY AND GUM DISEASE E?

Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth. When plaque stays on your teeth too long, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing help get plaque off your teeth so your mouth can stay healthy.

home to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Gum disease is common and, if left untreated, may lead to bone loss around the teeth. In some cases, it may lead to loose teeth and teeth being lost. Gum disease is

preventable. It can be treated and kept under control with regular cleaning sessions and check-ups, preventing further problems. If teeth are lost, it may be necessary to fill the gaps with bridges, dentures or implants.

Tooth decay can be painful and lead to fillings, crowns or inlays. If tooth decay is not treated, the nerve of the tooth can become infected and die, causing an abscess. This may then need a root canal treatment or even for the tooth to be removed. It is very important that you keep up a good routine at

FREE B4 School Check for 4 year olds

T

he B4 School Check (B4Sc) is FREE for every four year old in New Zealand and is the last Well Child Check. It is strongly recommended that your child has their B4Sc check as soon after their fourth birthday as possible. This leaves enough time for any followups or referrals that may be required to get sorted before your child starts school. The B4Sc check can take place at your regular GP clinic or medical centre and is a great opportunity for you to talk with a registered nurse about the things that are important to you, your child and whanau. The check takes approximately 30-45 minutes and involves health and development checks, height, weight, dental screening and

immunisations. A hearing and vision check is also conducted and this will usually occur at the child’s early childhood centre or Kohanga Reo. All four year olds should have received a B4Sc by the time they are four years and three months old. Know your body, know the signs. Early detection saves lives.

I

“ wish I knew” is not what we want to hear others say after a diagnosis of a women’s cancer. At the New Zealand Gynaecological Cancer Foundation, we believe early detection is our weapon against the 5 women’s gynaecological cancers. Know the signs and symptoms. We are worth it! We are all loved by someone, and we are all significant to someone. Our greatest gift to give to our whanau (family) and hapori (community) is to take care of ourselves, then support and empower the wahine’s (females) around us. You may have seen us attending the NZ Women’s Expo’s nation-wide. Talking with women we find there are some consistent threads of misconceptions about our need to care for our gynaecological health. Some of the common myths are:

5 Women’s Cancers Know the signs & symptoms Cervical Endometrial (Uterine) Ovarian Vaginal Vulval

www.nzgcf.org.nz

• “I have had a hysterectomy; I don’t need to worry about that now” • “I am over 70 and don’t need to get a smear anymore”

• “I get regular smears, I am covered” • “Post menopausal bleeding is unrelated to gynaecological cancers” A smear will only detect 1 of the 5 gynaecological cancers which is Cervical cancer. The other 4 cancers can only be picked up by knowing the signs and symptoms. In NZ, 3 women are diagnosed, and 1 woman dies every day from gynaecological cancer and it’s on the increase. We are vulnerable to: 1. Cervical 2. Endometrial (uterine) 3. Ovarian 4. Vaginal 5. Vulval Know the signs by knowing your body. You, not your doctor, are the first line of defence. You know when something changes within your body. If it persists for longer than 2 weeks. Go to your doctor. Visit nzgcf.org.nz or our Facebook or Instagram page to know more about the signs and symptoms. We are primarily a volunteerbased charity which relies on donations and grants to spread the work of awareness.

Influenza can be a serious illness with severe effects, including hospitalisation, complications and even death. It can affect anyone, no matter how fit, active and healthy they may be. A

food allergy is when the body’s immune system reacts to a harmless food as if it were toxic. In most cases, the allergic reaction may cause mild to moderate symptoms such as a rash or an upset tummy. In rare cases, it can cause a severe reaction called anaphylaxis.

WHO IS AFFECTED BY FOOD ALLERGY?

Most food allergies start in childhood and are most common in young children aged less than 5 years. Even young babies can develop symptoms of food allergy. Food allergy affects up to 10% of babies, 6% of children and 2% of adults. Allergies tend to run in

families, so a baby with parents who have allergies is at a higher risk of developing food allergy. However, some babies can develop food allergy even though there is no family history of allergy.

more natural treatment for your ailment. Chartered Practitioner of Natural Medicine, Kathleen Keith, likens her work to that of the old fashioned GPs with their black bags with a wide range of therapies to call on as needed by individuals.

“The Bowen Technique” is the major basis of most of my treatments. It’s a dynamic system treating muscle and connective tissue and is a very useful hands-on treatment for soft tissue, using the myofascial techniques.

Kathleen is a professionally trained therapist with wide-ranging experience in a number of fields, from treating immune dysfunctions, homeopathy, naturopathy, allergies, natural vision impairment, neuro linguistic programming to herbal energy therapy and remedial body therapies. Ongoing training ensures that you receive the best health care possible.

“It works by stimulating various soft tissue areas, empowering the body’s own healing resources.” The Bowen Technique is a holistic treatment, stimulating circulation, encouraging lymphatic and venous drainage, promoting assimilation of nutrients, eliminating toxins, increasing joint mobility and improving posture.

“Relief is often obtained after the first session, and many patients only need two or three treatments one week apart. The treatments are effective through clothing, and sessions usually last between 20 and 40 minutes.” Having her clinic in her home allows Kathleen to accommodate shift workers and out-of-town visitors, when convenient to them.

underlying causes of illhealth are all part of the Naturopath’s work. So if you are sick of feeling tired and looking for a more natural treatment for your ailment, and a treatment leaving you with no side effects, phone Kathleen for an appointment and let her help you get back into good health the natural way.

Education is an important part of Kathleen’s work. She is able to give easy to understand explanations to help her patients get involved in their own health programme and journey to wellness. Treating the whole person, teaching prevention, plus identifying and treating

T

P

he type of work involved as a driver for Driving Miss Daisy means elderly or disabled can go for a ride somewhere, being helped into a waiting room and made to feel safe. It’s the companionship they get from the very first meeting, knowing that there are people who care and will come back another day for them. “For senior people, giving up their licence is the biggest thing they have ever done and they feel they have some independence back if they can go places with Driving Miss Daisy.” Driving Miss Daisy has a range of clients and Clive Aim’s other new initiative means they can offer a more

comfortable service for wheelchair users. He has purchased a second vehicle, one which can carry people in their wheelchairs. “It has a ramp-based system that can take wheelchairs rather than the slightly hairy system of having a hoist and being taken off the ground,” Aim said. Driving Miss Daisy Whanganui is Total Mobility approved (about 85 per cent of users are Total Mobility card holders) and is an ACC registered vendor.

racticed for centuries by Thai monks, and forming a central component of Thai medicine, Thai massage is believed to have originated over 2,500 years ago. Today, Thai massage is being practiced in clinics and spas all over the world. It combines elements of yoga, meditation, acupressure and assisted stretching, to treat both mental and physical illnesses. As with Western massage, releasing joint and muscular tension are the immediate benefits of medicinal Thai massage. However, the acupressure techniques used in Thai massage have additional

benefits in terms of releasing nerve tension, freeing energy flow and releasing emotional tension held within the body. The end result is a heightened sense of wellbeing and optimum relaxation. Sue’s craft is the handson practice of traditional medicine. She received her qualification from the world famous Union of Thai Traditional Medicine Society, and had years of experience in her native Thailand before moving to New Zealand. It has long been her dream to open a shop in Wanganui to help local people who suffer from pain or stress.

New Technology at your Local Indepe endent Optometrist

W

anganui Eyecare and Eyes on Victoria are your local Optometry professionals. With over 50 years of industry experience, our team deliver a friendly approach in a warm and welcoming environment. We have Optometrists specialising in all areas of vision care. These include: Children’s Vision, MearesIrlen Lenses, Complex Contact Lenses and Emergency Eyecare. Just last year we expanded to offer Clinics in Dry-Eye and ShortSight Control.

WHAT TREATMENTS ARE AVA A I LA B L E F O R DRY-EYE ES ?

Following a tailored Dry Eye Assessment, we frequently recommend IPL Laser for those with sore and irritated eyes. IPL stimulates the oil producing glands in the eyelid. By improving the consistency and outflow of oil, IPL can restore tear balance and improve symptoms of dry eye. Other treatments include Mechanical Lid Exfoliations, Heat Therapy and Tear Duct plugs to prevent evaporation of our natural tears.

WHAT IS ORTHOK KERATOLOGY?

Within our Myopia Control Clinic, we aim to slow down the progression of shortsight in children. By reducing

the rate of progression, we aim to reduce the prevalence of certain diseases. When vision stabilises, children may be less dependent on thick lenses to help them see. Our corneal topographer allows us to take a digital map of the front surface of the eye. From this, a fully custom designed contact lens is designed and created. This Orthokeratology lens is worn while sleeping, and is one of the most effective treatments available for myopia control. The lens temporarily alters the shape of the eye sao that patients can see clearly for the following day, without

needing glasses or contact lenses.

WHAT’S NEW?

Wanganui Eyecare are the only Optometrist in Wanganui with EIDON retinal scanning. This replaces standard retinal photography, and delivers a much higher resolution and image quality. EIDON retinal scanning is complimentary and included as part of every comprehensive eye examination at Wanganui Eyecare.
