T

hai Body Massage/ Thai Foot Massage ‘Healthy Life Package’ from an expert massage therapist can benefit you in the following ways: 1. Improves the functioning of the blood and lymphatic circulatory systems. This helps get the blood to where it’s needed and removes toxins and other waste material from your bodies natural functions. This is why getting a massage at least twice a week is recommended. 2. Able to relieve muscle and joint pain by improving the correct functioning of soft tissue.

3. It relieved stress and creates a wholesome effect in the mind. Some of this may be attributed to the bodies release of endorphins during the massage. The Neck and Shoulders Massage is particularly effective at quickly providing relief from tension headaches and upper back pains. 4. Motivates better mobility. If you are not in pain you are more likely to want to get up and do more. 5. Improves health condition on partial paralysis with revival and pressure point massage. Soft tissue manipulation and joint exercise helps

maintain condition of the affected areas and reduces muscle wastage. 6. Massage is an effective alternative way to reduce

or avoid taking pain killers, some of which can cause unpleasant side effects, which in extreme cases may require the taking of other medications to counter.

New Driving Miss Daisy

What is Diabetes?

D

iabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose is too high. Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells.

TYPE 1 DIA A B ETE S

If you have type 1 diabetes, your body does not make insulin. Your immune system attacks and destroys the cells in your pancreas that make insulin. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in children and young adults, although it can appear at

5

any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day.

AB E TES TYPE 2 DIA

If you have type 2 diabetes, your body does not make or use insulin well. You can develop type 2 diabetes at any age, even during childhood. However, this type of diabetes occurs most often in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems. Although diabetes has no cure, you can take steps to manage your diabetes and stay healthy.

he type of work involved as a driver for Driving Miss Daisy means elderly or disabled can go for a ride somewhere, being helped into a waiting room and made to feel safe. It’s the companionship they get from the very first meeting, knowing that there are people who care and will come back another day for them. “For senior people, giving up their licence is the biggest thing they have ever done and they feel they have some independence back if they can go places with Driving Miss Daisy.” Driving Miss Daisy has a range of clients and Clive Aim’s other new initiative means they can offer a more

comfortable service for wheelchair users. He has purchased a second vehicle, one which can carry people in their wheelchairs. “It has a ramp-based system that can take wheelchairs rather than the slightly hairy system of having a hoist and being taken off the ground,” Aim said. Driving Miss Daisy Whanganui is Total Mobility approved (about 85 per cent of users are Total Mobility card holders) and is an ACC registered vendor.

f you want to stay well and healthy over the winter season then now is the time to get immunised.

Influenza can be a serious illness with severe effects, including hospitalisation, complications and even death. It can affect anyone, no matter how fit, active and healthy they may be. As the flu is spread from person to person, getting vaccinated and protecting yourself is one way to help stop this virus from infecting your family, friends and the community.

Are sensors and artificial intelligence the future of ageing-in-place technology? International research1 is clearly showing the value of sensors in a private residence to extend the amount of time a person can remain independently in their home for longer. SECURELY® is a trust-owned New Zealand company that has a range of products that use sensors and artificial intelligence to monitor activity within a home. These same products can indicate illness or deteriorating health by alerting family and caregivers to changes in daily routine. General Manager Mark Smith says having infra-red motion detection sensors installed throughout the residence can let family and carers know that a person is “up and about” in the morning. He said unusual patterns of activity, or lack of activity, such as not using the kitchen or bathroom can be early indicators of illness that can be quickly followed up on. “Products like our FAMILY and PRO packs have sensors linked to an APP that enable family to view activity from wherever they may be – at work or living in a different town. It’s unobtrusive for those in the home, but it provides greater peace of mind for family and carers. The resident themselves can summon help at any time using their medical alarm, through a pendant or simply calling for help using voice activated emergency call device. Mark Smith says technology is providing greater independence and peace of mind for family and carers of seniors, but it also has potential for those with mental illness and conditions like dementia as sensors can be installed on doors and gates with a text alert sent to family members. The figures According to the Ministry of Social Development’s “Aging in Place”: The Views of Older Homeowners on Maintenance, Renovation and Adaptation” older people prefer to remain in the family home. Statistics NZ, 2013 Census, show that most people aged 65+ live in private dwellings but the proportion decreases with age. In 2013,

of people aged 65+ living in private dwellings: 59.3 % were aged 65–74 years; 31.0 % were aged 75–84 years; 9.7 % were aged 85+. There are also sound financial reasons for seniors staying in the family home for longer. Compare the cost of a FAMILY or PRO pack at a few hundred dollars compared with the cost of residential care which can range into the thousands per month depending on whether you are eligible for the Residential Care Subsidy after being Means Tested, and the level of care and service you require. Falls in the home We know from ACC data that one third of people over 65 fall in their home every year. The ACC cost due to fall-related injuries in the home were more than $163milion in 2016, estimated to rise to $418 million by 2025. Of those that fall, 60% spend an average of 12 hours on the floor before being found. And 88% of those falls require hospitalisation2. Painting a different picture with technology But for those that had fallen and lain on the floor unable or unwilling to call for help (only 20% of those with a medical alarm use it to call for help)3 this could have been prevented through: • Wearing a fall detector pendant could have immediately alerted our 24/7 monitoring centre who would have called to check if assistance was required, or if there was no answer would have called an ambulance (at our expense) • Installing sensors would have shown a lack of activity, sending a predictive alert to our monitoring station and family members to indicate a potential issue which would have been followed up by either a family member or alert our monitoring call centre • Having our voice activated emergency call device so a call for help using just their voice could have been made if they were not carrying their pendant or unable to press the pendant For a free in-home consultation reach out to us on 0800 865 865 or visit our website www.securely.nz for more information.

Invest in your safety with a SECURELY® 24/7 monitored security alarm According to NZ Police online data there have been 846 reported burglaries in the Whanganui District since May 2019. There are about 60,000 burglaries in New Zealand every year. In about 60% of those the offender gained entry through a window and 75% of burglaries happen during the day. More worryingly, 1 in 3 burglary victims will be burgled again within 12 months. Acting Assistant Commissioner Sam Hoyle in a 2017 interview said that “burglary is largely opportunistic. There has been on occasion in our history quite professional groups doing commercial burglaries - but for the majority of burglars - they are opportunists looking for easy pickings." So how can we make our properties as unattractive to burglars as possible? One answer is to have a monitored burglar alarm. SECURELY® can protect your business, home, rental, bach or shed with hard-wired or wireless security alarm options. Your system can include indoor and outdoor high definition cameras, internal and external sirens, professional monitoring or self-monitoring using a smartphone APP, sensors, panic buttons and more. We can “scope and quote” your property for free (30-minute free onsite consultation) on new alarm installations to advise on the best solution for

your property taking into account your location, site, the size of your property, wi-fi signal strength, and what it is you’re protecting. Our service and installation technicians operate from Whanganui down to Wellington and Taupo. Our 24/7 flexible alarm monitoring comes with a personalised response plan in the event of an alarm activation giving you confidence that we are keeping an eye on things when you’re not there. The Basics of Orral Health

H

ealthy habits, including brushing and flossing, can prevent tooth decay (cavities) and gum disease. Tooth decay and gum disease can lead to pain and tooth loss. You can prevent most problems with teeth and gums by taking these steps: • Brush your teeth 2 times a day with fluoride toothpaste. • Floss between your teeth every day. • Visit a dentist regularly for a check-up and cleaning. • Cut down on sugary foods and drinks. • Don’t smoke or chew tobacco. • If you drink alcohol, drink only in moderation.

Plaque is a sticky substance that forms on your teeth. When plaque stays on your teeth too long, it can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Brushing and flossing help get plaque off your teeth so your mouth can stay healthy.

home to keep your teeth and gums healthy. Gum disease is common and, if left untreated, may lead to bone loss around the teeth. In some cases, it may lead to loose teeth and teeth being lost. Gum disease is

preventable. It can be treated and kept under control with regular cleaning sessions and check-ups, preventing further problems. If teeth are lost, it may be necessary to fill the gaps with bridges, dentures or implants.

Tooth decay can be painful and lead to fillings, crowns or inlays. If tooth decay is not treated, the nerve of the tooth can become infected and die, causing an abscess. This may then need a root canal treatment or even for the tooth to be removed. It is very important that you keep up a good routine at

The Importance of ur tains and blinds s Cu

W

ell-installed curtains can help to reduce heat loss through your windows, provided they are installed without gaps that allow air movement between the window and the room. Open curtains and blinds during the day and close them just before it gets dark to allow your house to gain heat from the sun during the day, and better retain it overnight. In summer, close curtains and blinds on the side facing the sun and open windows to help keep your home cool.

HOW CURTAINS RE EDUCE HEAT LOSS

The aim is to create a good seal between the curtain

and the window, preventing cold air near the window from getting into the room. In cold weather, the air close to the window cools down and gets heavier. Without a good seal curtains do little to reduce heat loss - cold air will simply fall out at the bottom of the curtain or blind, and warm room air will continuously replace it at the top.

them with only a minimal airgap between the top of the curtain and the pelmet • fit tightly against the wall or window frame • be wider than the window frame • preferably be double layered with a thick lining. • Net-curtains installed very close to the window, and in contact with the window frame, can be effective too.

TIPS FOR BLINDS

• Try and install blinds with only minimal gaps around them. Honeycomb blinds that contain air-pockets within the blind can provide good insulation.

CURTAIN BANKS

Curtain banks support low-income households by offering free curtains in certain areas.

Installed well, curtains or blinds can reduce heat loss through both single and double-glazed windows.

TIPS FOR CURTAIN NS

To provide good insulation your curtains should: • be floor-length and touch the floor, or have pelmets above

Cataracts

P

atients can become very concerned when they hear they are developing cataracts. Cataracts are certainly nothing to be blasé about, but many are relieved to hear they are a part of the normal ageing process. Most if not all of us, will develop a cataract in our lifetime.

common risk factor, some studies indicate that diet, exposure to light and smoking may be related. Diabetics and those who are more readily exposed to UV light may develop cataracts earlier.

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s internal lens. This stops our eye from receiving clear images, making them blurred and fuzzy. Cataracts tend to affect people over 60, although rarely children may be born with cataracts.

• Blurred or foggy vision • Feeling as if you have a ‘film over your vision’ • Regular changes in prescription • Changes in colour vision where objects often look dull or washed out • Problems with glare, and sensitivity to car headlights or internal lighting • Double vision

For those who want to minimise risk, certain factors may cause a cataract to develop earlier. Though advancing age is the most

Some of the more common symptoms experienced by those with cataracts include:

A comprehensive vision examination is always recommended to assess the type and severity of a cataract. Though an advanced cataract will require surgery, many early or developing cataracts can benefit from a change in prescription or a specialised tint to reduce glare. Contrary to popular belief, cataract surgery does not involve the ‘scraping of a film’ off the front surface of the eye! The internal lens of

your eye is in fact surgically removed and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens. With our ageing population, cataract surgery has very quickly become one of the most commonly performed surgeries. Most patients return home on the same day as the surgery and recover quickly. If you feel you or your child would benefit from an assessment, please call Wanganui Eyecare on 06 345 4665 to schedule an appointment.
