Cream of the Crop If one of your favourite memories as a child is attending your local A&P Show, make sure you keep Saturday 2nd December free to spend with your family and friends at Barge Showgrounds, at Whangarei A&P Show. For one day the whole town comes together, a blend of urban and rural, in a spectacular mix of animals, entertainment, excitement and competition.
“Most of us have strong memories of A&P Shows from our younger days – eating hot chips, riding a pony, watching the animal competitions and petting animals. We want that tradition to continue for the kids of today too. In many ways it is more important now than ever before, as many of our Tamariki don’t get the same on-farm experiences we had in our childhood. Knowing where your food comes from and what happens on the land, is important, particularly with our changing environmental focus,” Chris Mason, CEO of Whangarei A&P society says. “Whangarei A&P Show is about demonstrating
pride in the land and the produce it generates, while bringing communities together and creating the types of experiences childhood memories are made of.” The Show provides opportunities for people, young and old, to learn about agriculture and animals in a fun and interactive way. Whether it is holding a warm, cuddly little animal in the petting area, or listening to the judges talking about the largest bull on the showgrounds, it would be hard to leave the Show without learning something!
The array of creatures at the Show is the largest in one place in Northland – there is everything from the humble honey bee to the magnificent hairy and horned Highland cattle. A visit to Cowley’s Farmyard and Bates & Keen family farm petting tents brings animals up close for young and old alike. From the sound of the bagpipes to the smell of the food (or animal poo even!), the Show provides a total sensory experience while also offering shopping, learning, socialising and dining.

Jersey is the feature breed at the Show this year, with Jersey NZ’s North Island Championship being held. Not only will show-goers see an excellent line-up of Jersey Cattle competing for the championship title, they can taste coffee containing Jersey milk, courtesy of Bella Vacca, and Kowhai Creamery ice cream made from Jersey milk. Beloved Show favourite, Fresha Valley Suzie Moo has a special guest this year who will be helping Suzie demonstrate where milk, butter and cream comes from. Excellence in agriculture is celebrated with the Show giving competitors a ‘time to shine’.
There are competitions galore – from locally made ceramics, to sand saucers, artwork, baking, home crafts as well as top quality animals vying for cups, ribbons and prize money. The A&P Show provides a place for rural people to proudly showcase what they do and answer questions from city folk. Rural learning opportunities also come in the form of various demonstrations and activities. “The Society’s vision is Rural Excellence – getting it out there! We aim to bring communities together to share rural excellence and knowledge. Each year in December, the
A&P Show plays an important role in providing opportunities for urban people to experience aspects of rural life creating memories, experiencing agriculture and related activities, and celebrating what it means to be ‘Kiwi’. Show spirit is about revisiting memories from our childhood and creating new ones for our own children and grandchildren,” Mason says. Memory makers at the Show include favourites such haybale tractor rides, G.J. Gardner Homes’ Big Dig sawdust dig, mounted games, wood chopping, highland dancing, vintage tractors and Jake Whitaker’s extreme stunt show is sure to add an extra thrill.
Whangarei A&P Show is about creating the perfect family day out. Children will have lots to see and do, including a visit to Santa’s grotto for a free photo or joining in the fabulous Kumarani Circus workshops. There are other activities too, bumper balls and a chance to ride the inflatable surfer wave, along with bouncy castles, tea-cup rides and Johnny’s Mobile EggCup world is back at the Show this year. The performance stage will be alive with action throughout the day, including Billy Black the Woolman, various musical groups, the Kaitaia Community Voices Choir and two special story-times with Barnacles & Atlas, featuring a lovable four-legged, furry friend.
