WOMEN IN BUSINESS PROUDLY BROUGHT TO YOU BY
Time to
Celebrate our Local Business-women I have been fortunate to have met many fantastic businesswomen in our region, the majority of whom go about their work in an undemonstrative way. They may run high profile businesses, offices or departments, but seek no personal acclaim for doing so. There are also a great many who slip completely beneath the radar, working out of view in home offices in a wide variety of different fields, often juggling the pressures of childcare with successful careers. My personal experience in the workplace has always been positive and I have not been directly affected by gender discrimination, although I have witnessed examples of behaviour that are not OK. The most obvious example of inequality is the gender pay gap. According to the 2012 New Zealand Income Survey, overall women earn 9.3 per cent less than men and that gap is even larger for Māori, Pasifika and Asian women. ThOR often begins with the first job and continues to widen over time. In other words, women may start from behind and then struggle to catch up for the rest of their careers. My advice to women is not to be afraid to stick your neck out. If you have done your homework and are passionate about something, you shouldn’t be worried about putting your view across. Men can mistake passion for emotion. If I’m passionate about something, men have told me that I’m too emotional. But if you are advocating for something and you are passionate about it,
then that’s a really positive thing. That’s how we make change happen. The stories of women in business that are outlined in this publication are all very different, but they carry the same basic underlying theme. All of these women have taken the opportunities that have been presented to them or that they have sought out themselves and gone on to make the most of them. Congratulations to all of them and let’s continue to work together towards building a community where gender in the workplace is irrelevant – it’s the quality of a person’s work that really matters.

LONE STAR CAFE MASTERTON SHALARI BOUTIQUE LINGERIE
From left: Donna Budd, Michelle Roseingrave and Marcelle Chamberlain
THREE WOMEN
KEY INGREDIENTS OF LONE STAR’S FAMILY RECIPE There are three women at Lone Star who have contributed hugely to the restaurant’s success since it opened seven months ago - Michelle Roseingrave, Donna Budd and Marcelle Chamberlain. Together they have created an environment with a real family flavour. Michelle and husband Tom both grew up in typical tight knit Wairarapa families of the 1970s and 1980s where children helped out with the family business. The Lone Star franchise appealed to them, Michelle says, “because it was a business we could include our four children in as well. It was something which the kids can be part of and enjoy too.” The couple also liked that Lone Star was a family oriented franchise, and they have striven to emulate that spirit in their own restaurant. “We want to build a welcoming atmosphere where people feel like they are guests invited into our home,” Michelle says. The couple were pleased to have the experience and knowledge of restaurant manager Donna Budd from day one, along with her warm and cheerful personality. Donna has worked in the hospitality industry since she was 18 and thrives on a full house and buzzy atmosphere - the busier the better. “I’ve got a really lovely, good young team, who are doing really well,” says Donna.
Donna trains her waiting staff in “old school service – relaxed, unpretentious but attentive to their needs. “Every guest gets VIP service. We make sure they introduce themselves to each table within two minutes and are back to see how they are going and take their order within five.” Donna also likes to encourage a positive mood with fun incentives for her team to compete for. The food the waiting staff serve comes from a kitchen overseen by Marcelle Chamberlain. Marcelle had previous lives as a mum and working in shearing sheds before a desire for a change of career led her to UCOL, and then further learning under the late great Ulli Reinartz of Guten Appetit Catering in Featherston. When Lone Star opened Marcelle was employed as the sous chef but was quickly promoted to head chef - with the distinction of being the only female head chef of Lone Star’s 27 restaurants in New Zealand. “I enjoy putting a smile on people’s faces when you serve them something,” she says. “My philosophy is that if you are serving your 200th meal of the day, it has to be as good as the first meal of the day. “We have five or six in the kitchen so it has been a big learning curve and has its challenges. And being the only woman - I’m very proud of that.”

BRAVURA WISDOM FROM
TINA DUNLOP
OF SHALARI BOUTIQUE LINGERIE It would be hard to find anyone in the Wairarapa more passionate about lingerie than Shalari owner Tina Dunlop.
“fitting card” so that when they come back “they don’t have to go back to square one every time.”
However, it might be more accurate to say that Tina’s passion is changing women’s lives.
“Every body is different so each woman requires an individual fitting. Getting the right fit makes a huge difference to how you look.”
Well fitted lingerie can make that much of a difference, she believes, affecting how a woman looks but also how they feel about themselves. Tina wishes New Zealand women paid the same attention to their lingerie, especially the bra, as the French do. “The French are very particular about underwear. They see it as the foundation garment and that is exactly what it is. “Before they buy any clothes, they make sure they have got the grounding right – they know it makes that much difference!” The key is choosing a bra with the right structure to match your “individual jig saw,” Tina says. “We wear a bra more than any other garment we own. Girls need to give it more respect. It affects the clothes you wear, it affects your posture. There is a whole lot associated with getting the bust in the right place.” Tina provides a personal fitting for all her customers and keeps their details on a
The World’s Quickest Lingerie Makeover
Tina is full of quirky little phrases. One of her favourites is describing lingerie as “the world’s quickest makeover.” “If a woman is ever unhappy with anything about the way they look, nine times out of ten it will be because the bra isn’t fitting properly. The bra is the coat hanger that all the garments sit on so it is very important.” There’s also a boost in confidence, Tina says. “Even if only you know you have nice underwear underneath, it makes a difference to how you project yourself.” Both Tina’s two staff members, Megan and Dani, have now been with Shalari for over a year now, “and their knowledge base is firing on all cylinders,” she says. Along with plenty of good advice, Shalari has a shop full of beautiful lingerie from labels Fantasie, Freya, Elomi, Goddess, Huit, Chantelle and Passionata, Camisoles from Arianne, and Nightwear and Robes by Ophelia King.

THE GOOD MOOD COMPANY
THE ESSENTIAL OIL ON
JO PARKER’S
A passion for essential oils has quickly grown into a successful business for Jo Parker, with exciting possibilities for the future. The Good Mood Company opened in Greytown one year ago, featuring Jo’s own range of essential oils, along with other sympathetic products designed to put anyone in a good mood. Essential oils have been around for thousands of years and have gone through regulars bursts of popularity, Jo says. “I’d always been a bit intrigued by them. In the 1990s they were quite cool but had a bit of a hippy reputation. “Whereas others had tended to focus on their medicinal value, my idea was to bring them into a modern contemporary environment focusing on their mood benefits.” Jo originally considered selling her
GOOD MOOD COMPANY
essential oils in retail outlets like pharmacies but felt they didn’t match the Good Mood concept. “So I set up my first shop (further south in Main Street, Greytown) to prove the concept and brand a little bit. “I almost had to trick myself into it with baby steps, otherwise I would never have let myself do it. I would have been too scared.” Good Mood’s five blends and 16 essential oils were previously made in Australia, but Jo has now found a New Zealand manufacturer. The Good Mood Company has continued to expand its range of products guaranteed to put people in a more positive frame of mind from handmade candles and soaps in her first shop, to cards, stationery and wellknown fragrance and body care brands Ecoya and The Aromatherapy Company.
The Good Mood Company for the Ultimate Gifts
Part of the business’s success has been choosing products that are true to the Good Mood spirit, Jo says. “The rule of thumb is that the product has to do something that puts you in a good mood – it could be a scent or it could be something funny. I also choose products that fit within a particular colour palette as much as possible.” Jo comes from a management, marketing and communications background. After helping other companies decide who they are, she loves doing the same for her own business. “Creating the Good Mood brand has been one of the creative, fun sides of running the business, along with being able to shop on a much grander scale.” Naming her business The Good Mood Company has worked in its favour, Jo believes.
“It’s an intriguing name. I’ve heard people in cafes discussing what it might be about and saying they were going to go and have a look.” Jo is excited about the future possibilities of the brand, which she sees as having the potential to become a franchise. “What really appeals to me about this idea is that it would be an opportunity to mentor other women in business.” As The Good Mood Company has continued to grow, Jo has been joined by Tessa Gillett whom she calls “her saviour.” Jo has just moved to Greytown to live, as well as work, and is a great fan of the town. “I really love going to the various cafes and restaurants. I love Greytown. Everyone is very friendly, and I really believe in supporting the local businesses.”

MENA ANTONIO
HELPING WOMEN GO FROM GOOD TO GREAT WITH THE DIASPORA WAY The Diaspora Way is a range of self-leadership programmes and coaching services helping people through key change, aligning external goals with inner core purpose. “My system is based on the ‘diaspora’ which refers to the scattering of people living elsewhere but maintaining a deep connection with home,” explains Mena. “Home” is used in a metaphysical sense, she says. “Programmes are designed to bring each back to the true, whole self as it is more important about who we are, than what we do.” The “Get Clear, Bold & Real Series” is an introductory workshop that includes simple diagnostic to clarify purpose, and activities which lead to producing the diaspora charter, a 12 month map addressing obstacles, and framing goals using business strategies and faith teaching. Spirituality must be included when addressing the whole person. The Diaspora Way is aimed at those who are motivated to go “from good to great,” Mena says, and is a very effective programme for graduates. “I work from the inside-out with people who are stuck, unclear or immobilised to take the next big step. I recalibrate what is driving their decisions, beliefs, fears and doubts, and help shift what’s in the way. “I transition people from living on automatic to living wholeheartedly, and fun. Fun is vital.” Mena is no stranger to change herself. She grew up in a family whose parents immigrated from Samoa. She says standing outside of the mainstream and straddling multiple cultures has its challenges, but also gifts valuable insights. She served in the New Zealand Army as full corporal in the Royal Corps of Signals, qualified as a lawyer, gained two postgraduate qualifications in
communications management and museum and heritage, and enjoyed a successful career in project management in New Zealand and Britain. One of Mena’s challenges were the many changes occurring when moving to Masterton with her husband and two children. “I was wildly ambitious and my career stopped dead. I was also unprepared for full time parenting and later when my children started school. Years invested in figuring out how to get unstuck, getting clear what was truly meaningful without forsaking the dreams resulted in amazing breakthroughs which are now shared to help others.” Over the years Mena has had mentoring roles involving youth, lawyers and senior education managers. Mena works with groups, individuals oneon-one, leads workshops and retreats. This month’s immersive retreat is at Kopua Monastery in Dannevirke on 26-28 June, with more scheduled in Wairarapa in July and August. JENNI PRICE
A TIRELESS TILE SPECIALIST Next Tuesday 16th of June sees Tile Warehouse move into attractive new premises at 395 Queen Street next to South Wairarapa Vets in Kuripuni.
Tiles are an incredibly versatile product, Jenni says, that can be adapted to any environment whether one wants a simple touch of class or something fresh and exciting.
Greeting customers will be owner Jenni Price. Jenni has been with Tile Warehouse for over a decade and purchased the Wairarapa franchise in 2012.
A great example of this are “timber” look tiles which have become quite popular recently. These come in a variety of styles from the Treverk timber tile range to the Epokal look of petrified wood with crystallized grains.
It was more than simply a business opportunity that inspired Jenni to purchase Tile Warehouse. “I love tiles. I think they add something special to any home. I love all the designs and colours, and the inspiration I can give people who are renovating or just DIYing. Tiles are always a design feature and give a quality look to any environment. “They are long lasting and keep their character practically forever. They will still be there looking good long after any other floor or wall covering has had to be replaced.’
Jenni and her staff have a huge amount of knowledge and experience to help customers choose the right tiles for the right places. “I enjoy talking with people and helping them make the right choice.” Jenni is really looking forward to the move to the new Queen Street address which features lots of light for displaying tiles to the best advantage. “It’s also bigger than our present address and has lots of easy parking.”
Tile Warehouse is very much a destination store because of its huge range of tiles which is regularly being updated with new styles.

LA FLEURE FLORISTE
SHARING EMOTIONS THROUGH FLOWERS La Fleure Floriste has been creating high quality, innovative and exceptional floral designs for as long as many people can remember. Its present owners are Kim and Luther Toloa whose daughter Melissa Cullen manages La Fleure and is a florist herself. Assisting her are Senior Florists Andrea Wolland and Sarah Kilmister, both of whom have been florists for over 20 years. Both Andrea and Sarah have previously owned florist stores in Masterton. What makes La Fleure stand out, Melissa believes, is the quality of its flowers and the skills of Andrea and Sarah in creating beautiful arrangements with them. Each has their own style. Andrea describes hers as a “classic style with lots of pastels, lilies, that sort of look.” Sarah is “big on colour. I like bold colours, so we complement each other.” La Fleure provides fresh flower arrangements for special occasions such as weddings and
funerals, school balls and anniversaries.
For someone special
I have my international qualifications in beauty therapy. I have been in the industry for a year and a half and absolutely love it. I enjoy making women feel more comfortable in their skin. I find this very satisfying.
But they are just as likely to be for a person’s home, or “just to make someone’s day,” Melissa says. Whatever the reason, flowers are always an expression of an emotion, she observes. “We really care about providing a good service because the business we are in is about dealing with people’s emotions. “Everyone here cares. We are providing a caring service for people’s needs at a moment in time.” All three women agree that what also makes La Fleure a special place to work is their friendships with each other. “It’s a lovely job, one of those nice jobs,” Sarah says. Andrea agrees: “I really enjoy what we do. It is different every day and just helping people.” Another important difference is that La Fleure Floriste is the only Interflora florist in the Wairarapa.

HEBE
VICKIE PICKERING

OF THE CONVEYANCING COMPANY – PROVING THAT BUYING A HOUSE IS NOT AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM
DANI BURKHART
Mortgage broker Vickie Pickering has some good news for people wanting to buy their first home – raising the necessary deposit may be easier than you think.
If you have been in the scheme for five years or more, those figures are $5,000 and $10,000 respectively. To qualify, a house — in the Wairarapa — can cost up to $350,000.
The secret is using your Kiwisaver savings plus the Kiwisaver HomeStart Grant which the government has just introduced.
You may also have access to a Welcome Home Loan. This is offered by certain lenders and underwritten by Housing New Zealand.
Looking chic and yet comfortable in a Arielle Mermin Rodeo Dress, Dani Burkhart is the embodiment of the philosophy of Hebe function + fashion = win.
Together these can potentially raise a deposit of between $30,000 and $50,000, enough for a good quality existing or new home in the Wairarapa.
With a Welcome Home Loan you need a 10 percent deposit, rather than the usual 20 percent required by most lenders. This is designed to assist first home buyers who can afford to make regular repayments but have trouble saving a large deposit.
Vickie is a Registered Financial adviser who is hugely experienced in the property market. She has seen it from all angles over her 26 years in the finance industry, including 2IC at ANZ Petone, buying investment properties herself, and helping her children into their first homes. Vickie points out that if you are a first home buyer and have been a member of Kiwisaver for three years or more, you can use your savings, employer contributions and all returns towards a deposit. The only money you can’t use is your original $1,000 kickstart. More recently, the government has introduced the Kiwisaver HomeStart Grant. Anyone who has been in Kiwisaver for three years or more can apply for this. The grant varies depending on whether you are purchasing an existing home or building a new one. As an example, if you have been in Kiwisaver for three years you can get a grant of $3,000 for an existing home or $6,000 for a new build.
A single purchaser can earn up to $80,000 before tax, and a couple up to $120,000 before tax. This means that a person, or couple, wanting to buy a home worth $350,000, may only need a deposit of $35,000. This is completely achievable for anyone who has been in Kiwisaver for five years and gets the $5,000 or $10,000 grant, Vickie says. For those who have joined Kiwisaver more recently, it may be a case of planning ahead. Vickie is able to help with that as well. Vickie points out that she is also able to help people in other financial circumstances, from “second chancers”, people who have previously owned a home as part of a relationship but who have to start out all over again after a break up, to asset rich but income poor retired people who want to tap into the value of their homes for a more comfortable lifestyle.
PUTTING “STYLE” INTO WAIRARAPA LIFESTYLE AT HEBE
Dani grew up in Masterton, graduating from St Matthew’s Collegiate and then going on to study fashion design at Bay of Plenty Polytechnic where she won the Supreme Design Award. She started her label “My Boyfriends Back” in Wellington before moving back to the Wairarapa where she married Johnny. The couple bought the boutique fashion store in Kuripuni nine months ago, with Johnny continuing as a commercial fisherman and the couple raising young son Jett. Johnny has used his practical skills and a surprisingly high level of creative talent to design some very smart fittings for Hebe such as the natural timber cube shelving where Dani now displays accessories including jewellery and bags.
“I network with people in the industry and can appreciate everyone else’s brand and what they are offering.” The labels on display within the attractive surroundings have been chosen to appeal to a broad range of tastes, Dani says. “I’ve tried to create a balance between everyday wear that appeals to most Wairarapa women, while also catering to the woman who wants something a bit more directional. “But even with everyday wear I’ve tried to stock brands that you won’t find anywhere else in Masterton.” One of the newest is Coop by Trelise Cooper which relates to a fun-loving woman with sense of flair and a love for fabric and colour. Plus French brands Zoe and 2ND Day. Hebe also has Jacki Peters and TOBY by David Pond in sizes 16 to 22.
Metallic hangers allow Dani to colour block some of the latest fashion trends which the eye immediately catches as you enter the store.
A nifty wardrobe designed by Johnny contains newly introduced organic cotton brands Kowtow and Commoners.
Dani has kept the fashion foundation that made Hebe popular when it opened three years ago, but has continued to evolve the store into what she eloquently describes as a “curated space.”
“I’m really grateful that I get to do what I love. It’s rewarding and exciting and fun.”
“I select everything for the shop, and I’m really supportive of New Zealand brands.
Dani admits to “living and breathing” fashion.
Dani is assisted by Karen McBride and Chevelle Beattie. “We make a great team as we all represent different sides of Hebe.”

MUSE DESIGN AND CREATIVE MASTERTON PROPERTY MANAGEMENT LTD ASHLEIGH MACLEOD CREATIVE DIRECTOR / GRAPHIC DESIGNER My name is Ashleigh Macleod, I’m a Masterton girl, born and bred. After attending Wairarapa College I decided to head over to the creative capital of Wellington to hone my skills. I graduated from Massey University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Design, majoring in advertising and have been gaining new skills, experience and valuable industry knowledge ever since. I was chosen to attend Awards School in 2011 at Saatchi & Saatchi and Clemenger BBDO in Wellington placing second overall. This gave me valuable insight into the world of advertising and allowed me to stretch my creative muscle. It was an environment that focused on developing award winning creative concepts and it was a joy to learn from the best in the business. I also spent time at the Young and Rubicam advertising agency where I had the privilege of generating creative advertisements for clients such as Te Papa, which was an invaluable experience.
During my career I have developed a strong background in advertising design and newspaper production. I have worked as an in-house designer for several companies who have valued my ability to respect their brand guidelines while also exploring ways in which I could develop their brand to reach its full potential. I started Muse Design because I want to help business owners, large and small, differentiate their business from their competitors. Every business has a story to tell and I thoroughly enjoy working with businesses to create a visual identity and collateral that will help them grow and flourish. I create brand identities, logos, annual reports, proposals, marketing collateral, print advertisements, letterheads, business cards, signage, invitations, posters and flyers to name a few! PAIN MANAGEMENT
IN2LEARNING
JULIANNE O’DONNELL
HELPING CHRONIC PAIN SUFFERERS TO LEAD A NORMAL LIFE Chronic pain is a major health issue in New Zealand. Not only is the pain itself difficult to deal with, but it also can lead to other physical health problems, as well as emotional and psychological ones like depression and anxiety, as reported in the study Chronic Pain in New Zealand: A community sample (Nicola Swain, Matthew Johnson 24th January 2014) published in the New Zealand Medical Journal.
Most people with ongoing pain become frustrated, with their only apparent option being extra medication and rest, Julianne says.
Eliminating chronic pain is not always possible, but there are ways to ameliorate its impact to enjoy life, says Pain Management practitioner and physiotherapist Julianne O’Donnell.
The lecture series, which will be of value to anyone experiencing chronic pain from joints to cancer, offers an informal environment to learn what you can do to help yourself.
Julianne is holding a series of six one hour lectures next month designed to help anyone suffering chronic pain.
Julianne believes doctors in general practice do not have the time to go into any depth on methods to deal with chronic pain.
They will cover the Physiology of Pain, Stress & Coping, Pacing & Fear Avoidance & GMI, Relaxation, Breathing & Stretching, Exercise & Back Into Life, and Flare Up Management.
Many people choose to rest to ease the pain, she says, “which means life becomes very restricted, and can lead to more isolation and depression. That leads to a whole pile of new problems to add to the suffering.”
A qualified physiotherapist of many years standing, Julianne worked in the field of sports injury with the Australian Institute of Sport before moving into pain management, completing a Master of Physiotherapy (Rehabilitation) with a large part of the study in this field. She was a member of the “Hutt Valley Pain Team” based at Hutt Hospital until last year and moved to the Wairarapa five years ago, with a clinic at 67 Villa Street, Masterton.
According to the New Zealand Health Survey 2011/12, 16 percent of adults reported chronic pain occurs every day for at least 6 months. Rates are higher among females, older people and Maori.
“But there are other methods that can help.”
Instead Julianne provides simple and effect tools that may not eliminate the pain, but will help to people adjust to it so that they can continue to lead satisfactory lives. “Sometimes a cure is not always possible. It is a matter of getting back to a normal life despite your pain.”

SALLY CHAMBERLAIN GETTING CHILDREN IN2LEARNING
Over the past 15 years Sally Chamberlain has taught and inspired hundreds of children. Until recently Sally was part of the Kip McGrath Education Centre group but now she is an independent educationalist, tutoring under the banner of the In2Learning group. Sally became a teacher way back in 1967 and still enjoys the vocation. “Once a teacher, always a teacher,” she says. “I still like to motivate and encourage young people to use their talents, and succeed in any way they can.” Sally and her staff of two qualified teachers Adele and Shane, tutor the children amidst the tranquillity on her and husband Dick’s 50 acre sheep & beef farm just out of Masterton. They focus on helping improve children’s skills in numeracy and maths, English, spelling and reading from ages 6 to 16yr. Sally regularly tutors students who from even a young age have lost the will to succeed. “Their self belief is low for multiple reasons that are not their fault. There may be health and hearing problems, family issues, or they are feeling inadequate because of the National Standards or NCEA system where their results are constantly being graded and compared.”
Sally offers free assessments for all students. Some problems can easily be helped with a professional eye test or the Cellfield neurological programme which improves students with reading and comprehension issues. Whatever the reason, Sally’s lessons help children to improve their learning and also feel more successful in their lives. “We see a lot of improvement with our students. Quite often parents of former students come up to me and say how well their child has done since they last saw me and how much the after-school tutoring helped.” Sally uses rewards based incentives, and New Zealand based software programmes which make learning fun. Sally’s passion outside of teaching is being President of the “Wairarapa Singers” choir who perform regularly. They recently gave a sell-out performance of Mozart’s Requiem in the Rathkeale College Auditorium, accompanied by a live orchestra.
I would like to offer your child a free assessment .

TEN O’CLOCK COOKIE BAKERY & CAFE
PICTURE PERFECT BAKING WITH
JENNA MANGIN
Ten O’Clock Cookie has an illustrious reputation for its bakery winning numerous national competitions. Making sure these high standards are maintained on a daily basis is the responsibility of Bakery Team Leader Jenna Mangin. Jenna makes sure the bakery’s production schedule is on time and up to standard. “Everything we put out has to be ‘picture perfect,” she says. “That means you could take a photo of each product and it will be perfect. “I think that is really important as people buy with their eyes, and our baking always tastes good.” New Zealand Apprentice Baker of the Year in 2012, Jenna first learned to bake beside her mother on weekends. Now a qualified baker, Jenna loves the competitive side of baking. Last year Ten O’Clock Cookie was New Zealand Bakery of the Year runner-up. It also was named the best hot cross bun maker in the country in 2014, and reached the top five this year. “We like to showcase what we do. It keeps things exciting, gives us goals to work towards, and brings out good team work.”
JULIANNA HEMA MONIQUE KLOEG – A SMILE CAN GO A LONG WAY
One of the most striking features of Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Cafe is the professionalism and friendliness of its mostly young staff. Much of the credit for this goes to Julianna Hema, Cafe Team Leader and 2IC. Juliana has really strong leadership skills, Manager Monique Kloeg says. “It takes a lot off my plate knowing that the business will run smoothly whenever I step back.” The product speaks for itself in its taste and presentation, but Julianna places as much importance on service. All the new staff are trained in providing the best service, as well as returning staff who may not be familiar with any new systems put in place.“The girls work hard and we take time to sit down with them and say this is what we need to work on,” Julianna says. She believes the skills the mostly young woman learn at Ten O’Clock Cookie will be helpful in whatever career they pursue. “If you teach the young girls to be friendly, and be thick skinned as well, these are fundamentals that will help them as they come across people in work and life later on.” Customers can always expect a nice smile, and this is no accident as it is something Julianna encourages. “Having a positive attitude makes life a bit easier, and smiles go a long way. There’s a saying that smiles are contagious.” Julianna also appreciates working with all the other women. “We are great moral support for each other.”
– CONSTANTLY REFINING THE RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
There are a number of ingredients that go in the mix to make Ten O’Clock Cookie special. One of the most important is its manager Monique Kloeg. Monique, daughter of founders John and Anneke Kloeg, returned to the Queen Street Bakery Café seven years ago after collecting lots of fresh ideas in her travels overseas. Since then she has been refining the bakery café to perfection. When it went through a major renovation last November there were two main things on the agenda, Monique says – “customer flow and acoustics.” The interior was given a new colour scheme and the double and triple booths were replaced with single ones. But most importantly, both tills were put at the far end so customers move along the food cabinets to select and pay for their purchase and then away to the seating, which means people aren’t walking into each other. Outside, the car parks have been replaced with tables and a permanent shade sail. These have been very popular but Monique also likes the fact that they have brought more life into the street. Panels installed in the ceiling now absorb much of the sound.“That has gone really well with a lot of people commenting on the improved sound.” Monique says it was very noticeable when the Masterton Community Orchestra gave a second performance at the café recently.“That went really well. A lot of people commented on the improved sound.”

PUTTING THE “HOME” INTO HOME COOKING
SUE FLEET
Officially, Sue Fleet is Kitchen Team Leader at Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Café. Unofficially, as she is “mum” to her young team. Along with managing the kitchen so everything runs smoothly and to a high standard, Sue is the “go to” person for advice on everything from sewing to laundry tips. She also broadens everyone’s vocabulary by throwing out oldfashioned sayings no one has heard of before. “Sue brings a lot of stability and security to the kitchen,” Manager Monique Kloeg says. Ten O’Clock Cookie serves Breakfast, Lunch and Brunch menus with the Kitchen also being responsible for all the non Bakery cabinet food - everything is made in the Kitchen. Presentation is an important element, Sue says - “If it doesn’t look good, it won’t sell” – along with making sure the food is of a consistently high standard. The Kitchen has a loyal following of regulars, catering for everyone from tiny tots to the older generation. A creative person by nature, Sue enjoys researching and adding new options on a regular basis. Outside of work she is very creative as well, scrap booking, and making cards and decorations including some to adorn the bakery café each Christmas.

SMART TIMERS KATE JURLINA
PHYSIOTHERAPY
A SMART IDEA FOR PUTTING PEOPLE INTO PART TIME WORK Meet Kate Jurlina. Wairarapa mum of four and owner of local fledgling business, Smart Timers. Specalising in placing highly-skilled and efficient people into part time work, Smart Timers was an idea born from Kate’s own personal experience when she made the decision to return to the workforce. After starting the search for a role that not only met her skill set, but also met her desire to work part time to meet the needs of her family, Kate realised there was room in the market for a boutique placement service. A service that not only makes the process simple for those looking for work during school hours, but also makes it easy for businesses to hire them. “I knew that I wanted to get back into the workforce but as a mum of four with a husband that works full time, a 40 hour week was never going to work for us” Kate says. “It struck me that there must be so many other parents in my position, people with great skills and drive that would be an asset to any company, but who can only commit to working within school hours. And from there, Smart Timers was born.” And with it, the company’s catchy tag line “nine til three, just like me”. In the short time since launching Smart Timers, Kate has already signed a number of excellent contractors and has made several successful placements with local businesses. “Our clients love the service we provide, it takes the hassle out of the hiring process for them.” Kate says. “Not only do we provide them with a high calibre person but we look after their contracts, timesheets, PAYE, ACC and Kiwisaver. There are no complicated invoices or extra paperwork for them to worry about, we liaise with the contractor directly.” Running the business from her home office in rural Masterton, Kate is set up to offer her clients a far more personalised service, regularly travelling around the region to meet with clients where it best suits them. In a community that is big on family,
and with modern technology making it even easier for businesses to offer more flexible working options, Smart Timers is set to grow from strength to strength. “It’s been such an exciting journey so far, the feedback I’ve received has been hugely positive, not just from contractors but from clients too” Kate says. If you’re interested in finding out how Smart Timers can work for your business, or if you are interested in becoming a Smart Timer yourself, visit www.smarttimers.co.nz EDITORIAL WRITTEN BY: Kimberly Bingham, Director, Ctrl-C Copy Writing and Editing.
TESTIMONIALS “Found an ideal worker first time, in a week - stress free placement !” Blair Stevens, Director, NZR Real Estate Ltd “The moment I first spoke to Kate I felt at ease, she was professional, friendly and understood me. With extremely professional processes and delivery, they have been fast and easy to deal with. The candidate who was provided is incredibly savvy, and whom is beyond what we had anticipated. We would highly recommend Smart Timers to other businesses looking for well skilled, motivated candidates.” Andy Holmes, Managing Director, Holmes Construction Group Ltd

KIRSTEN TATHAM PHYSIOTHERAPY A NEW HOME AT 124 MAIN STREET BUT SAME QUALITY SERVICE Popular Greytown physiotherapist Kirsten Tatham has moved – but only round a couple of corners. It’s the same exceptional service, in different premises, now conveniently on Main Street. At the back of 124 Main Street, which is home to a number of other businesses, Kirsten has relocated the practice she founded 7 years ago. The aim is to be more visible and accessible to her patients. Kirsten’s practice provides a wide range of physiotherapy services, all delivered with her trademark upbeat and motivating style. Her easy and open manner endears her to a wide range of clients, and she is well-liked and respected by her established and loyal client base. However, ensuring new patients who don’t know her can find her is also behind the move, so the main street presence is ideal. ‘I am always keen to welcome new patients,’ says Kirsten. ‘The idea is that clients don’t have to be clients for long. My goal is to return patients back to pretty much how things were before their injury or illness, just as soon as I can. ‘That said, our lifestyles here in the Wairarapa inevitably mean return visits for some people.
We’re an active, sporting, farming, hardworking, hard-playing lot in the Wairarapa and that means we push ourselves pretty hard and get hurt. ‘We also have a population of older folk who need treatment as a result of illness, and some younger ones too. In a community like ours, it’s crucial I can provide the broadest spectrum of physio services I can. People want to come to the one place and get completely fixed up. With over fifteen years’ experience both in New Zealand and overseas, in both clinics and hospitals, Kirsten provides a comprehensive range of services for all types of injuries; from acute to chronic, sports and work injuries, post-orthopaedic surgeries, biomechanical analyses, strengthening exercise programmes, out-patient care for neurological conditions (eg.post stroke/ Parkinson’s/reduced mobility) and more. She welcomes patients from children to older people, and being ACC-registered, patients can come straight to her without seeing a doctor first. ‘I’m loving being bang in the middle of town now,’ she says. ‘Being part of a bustling and positive community and helping people every day is very rewarding.’

GARDIEN
EASTWOOD MOTOR GROUP
ANITA BAKER
USING NATURE TO CREATE A GARDIEN OF HEALTH Gardien range which ten years later includes cosmetics, moisturisers, sunburn remedies and lip balms. She sources the herbal ingredients, devises a formula for each item, and sends it to a laboratory in Palmerston North to be made. They are free from chemicals, with all products containing a plant-based preservative. As well, there are Gardien herbal remedies for various health issues, such as ulcers, bowel problems, glandular fever and allergies.
Anita Baker is one of those uncommon health professionals who is highly qualified in mainstream health practice as well as having a deep interest in natural health remedies. She’s a New Zealand registered nurse, internationally qualified beautician, and is about to complete her three year diploma as a naturopath. She manufacturers her own range of natural skin care products, holds skin care parties, does iridology, therapeutic and hot rock massage, has a blended family of nine children with husband Tony, and runs her clinic on a five acre lifestyle property that features goats, ducks, cattle and more! But where it all began was with her role as a Plunket nurse. Anita noticed that a lot of the babies were having problems with eczema. “It really bothered me that they were being given chemicals to put on their skin. I wanted to find out why kids were getting eczema and treat the cause rather than the symptoms.” That ignited her passion for herbal medicine. “Once I went there I didn’t come back!” Anita is a practising nurse who answers inquiries on the Department of Health’s Health Line but two years ago she also launched Gardien, a health and wellness clinic in Millard Avenue, Masterton. After completing studies in herbal medicine, she began developing her
At the clinic, Anita starts off with a thorough one and a half hour consultation with each client, doing a holistic health check that includes both their physical and emotional well-being. “Whatever the health concern, I go through all the body systems to find the underlying cause. Treatment can be in a variety of ways including vitamins, minerals, nutrients/dietary changes and clearing the detoxification pathways.” Tony has recently joined the business as a trained massage therapist, working in particular with professional athletes, among them the Kiwi rugby league team before their recent test victory over Australia. He also wants to specialise in farmers, Anita says. “He sees a real need for this as farmers are often under a great deal of physical and emotional stress that affects their health.” To cap it all off, Anita offers Gardien Goddess parties, her own herbal version of the traditional Tupperware party. “It’s a fun way to educate people on the health benefits of not putting chemicals on their skin. This is very important to me because your skin is your largest organ. What you put on your skin goes all the way through it.” The clinic has been steadily growing since it opened two years ago. “I’m getting clients from as far away as Christchurch and the Hawkes Bay as word gets around. I’m really grateful for the support I’ve been getting from everyone in the Wairarapa.”

LOU NIX
FROM REPAIRING UNIMOGS IN THE PACIFIC TO SERVICING YOUR FAMILY CAR Lou Nix has unloaded cargo ships in Antarctica and fixed unimogs in the Solomon Islands. But these days she’s happiest working underneath the chassis of your average family car at Eastwood Motor Group in Masterton. Lou grew up at Pirinoa before joining the New Zealand Army to become a mechanic. “I saw joining the army as a way to get an apprenticeship and learn the trade,” she says. Her time in the army saw Lou working on a variety of vehicles from diesel trucks to heavy plant and machinery. A highlight was being flown down to Antactica where at the beginning of each summer, defence force staff support the United States Antarctic Programme, and New Zealand’s Scott Base. “It was really interesting and quite beautiful.” Lou was also one of the mechanics on a six month Pacific Partnership humanitarian aid mission that visited many of the region’s nations including removing live World War II ammunition from Kiribati, and helping build disaster resilience in the Solomons and other islands.
After five years in the military, Lou decided it was time for a change. “What motivated me was that I wanted to work on other types of vehicles to widen my experience.” She’s enjoying her role as a general technician at Eastwood Motor Group. “It’s a really good place to work. They are really good people, and I’m enjoying the variety of vehicles I get to work on.” Eastwood Motor Group services all makes and models, whether it’s a Warrant of Fitness, annual service, tune up, or any mechanical faults. Lou is also benefiting from the modern workshop facility which features the latest diagnostic tools for Hyundai, Kia and Isuzu utes. While customers wait to pick up their car, they can relax in the “Customer Lounge”, a cool little space reminiscent of the age of luxury travel, where they can enjoy complementary tea and coffee, magazines, wi-fi and television.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS
AT WAIRARAPA BUILDING SOCIETY
Women have long been a part of WBS history with the first female secretary starting work in 1912. WBS is the result of a merger between several building societies culminating in the modern environment of today. The same business model still exists - money is invested by the public at competitive rates, is lent out in the form of mortgages to local residents, and with over 95% of income derived being returned to the community in the form of sponsorship, its benefitting all who live in this lovely region. Here are just some of the women you will encounter when you step into WBS. With the prediction being that current interest rates will fall further, WBS currently has a market beating investment offer, which looks unlikely to be repeated in the foreseeable future. TWO HANDS MASSAGE
REANNE TAWHARU
WORK MASSAGE MAGIC
Gifted massage therapist Reanne Tawharu is now offering massages in Masterton as well as Featherston.
Massage Therapy gives an all over sense of well being as well as reconnecting the client with their body.
Since opening her clinic in Featherston 8 years ago Reanne has gained a great reputation around the Wairarapa for her natural ability to hit the spot, clients often describing her hands as “magic.”
“Through day to day grind, people get busy and often don’t take time to listen to their own bodies or they choose to ignore the signs. Massage is one of the most healing techniques you can receive. It’s great for body awareness and gives you that much needed time out for yourself.”
“The stones are a great relaxation tool”, Reanne says “they help stimulate blood flow, bringing valuable oxygen and nutrients to specific parts of the body, allowing for it to function more efficiently.” The combination of massage techniques enhances the flow of energy throughout the body, to release deep rooted tension Reanne says. “ My aim is to free up restrictions that cause pain and tension. I listen to the individual and work mindfully with the body depending on how they are feeling on the day.”
“I love my job, there is nothing more satisfying than watching a client walk out as if they are a whole new person.” Among the different options Two Hands offers are therapeutic massage, hot stone therapy, deep tissue, sports massage and reflexology foot massage. Reanne is at Hot Yoga for You at Kuripuni on Tuesdays from 9.30am to 5pm. FAITH IN FEATHERSTON
SEES PROFESSIONALS INCREASE ITS FEMALE AGENTS TO FOUR Featherston is fast developing into a very desirable place to live with increasing interests from home buyers. Professionals Patrick & Scott has consistently maintained its faith in the town as the only real estate company to have a fully manned office here. to live, with 74 sales compared to the previous year of 45. Fran is confident that with further commercial development Featherston will be an attractive and affordable place to invest in. One of its great attractions is that it still offers great value for money, especially for anyone selling in the Hutt or Wellington, she says. “There is an excellent train service for those who have jobs over the hill.” The office has regular enquiries from potential buyers in Wellington, overseas, as well as locals looking to upgrade their current home.
Independently, they run their own business, but they work together as a team to achieve the best results for their clients.
With an evident shortage of rentals available in the town this also indicates that people are wanting to stay put and enjoy the friendly community that Featherston offers, Fran says.
Fran has been self employed and in business since 1986, the last five years as part owner of the Professionals Patrick & Scott which includes six offices from Waipukuara through to Featherston.

LANSDOWNE PRIVATE CHILD CARE AND PRE SCHOOL TONI DEVENNY
– CELEBRATING 22 YEARS OF LANSDOWNE PRIVATE CHILD CARE AND PRE SCHOOL In January this year Lansdowne Private Child Care and Pre School celebrated its 22nd birthday. Since Toni Devenny opened the centre in 1993 it has become one of Masterton’s longest running and most wellrespected Early Childhood Centres. “My background was nursing but I always had an interest in early childhood education,” Toni says.
Teachers of the Early Childhood Centre
“When my own children were at primary school I used to provide homecare for other parents’ children. I enjoyed what I was doing but had more people wanting me to look after their children than what I could manage myself. So I looked into starting a childcare centre and it went from there.”
Children and teachers of The Nursery
There is a set early childhood curriculum at the centre, and Toni has adhered to the same philosophy she had at the beginning. “First and foremost it is care of the child, providing a nurturing and relaxed environment where they are then going to learn”. “I don’t believe children should feel pressured at that age - let them explore and learn at their own pace. I believe the first five years of a child’s life is the only time they have to experience completely free choice”. “There are structures and guidelines at the centre but as far as learning and exploring goes, children are encouraged to do this at their own pace and our teachers recognise this.”
Initially Toni opened a mixed aged centre at 27 First Street, but during the following years the demand for early childhood care and education at the centre grew.
The nursery is more about nurturing and routine with a focus first and foremost on care, Toni says.
To cater for this Toni opened a second centre next door at 25 First Street with the two very much connected.
“It’s hard for parents to leave their little babies. We have staff who specialise in this area”.
“Having both centres has enabled the babies and toddlers to have their own space, The Nursery, separate from the Pre-School which caters for children aged two and a half to five years.”
Lansdowne Private Child Care and Pre School presently has all women teachers from a variety of backgrounds “which brings different strengths and teaching techniques to centre,” Toni says.

SELLAR & SELLAR
JENNIAN HOMES

WOMEN
BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS AT SELLAR & SELLAR Established in 1884, Sellar & Sellar is the Wairarapa’s longest established chartered accountancy firm.
Community Partner.
While women were not a part of the workforce in the firm’s early days, they definitely play a large role today – 11 of the 16 staff are women. Included amongst them are five of Sellar & Sellar’s seven accounting staff. What is notable is that they are all long serving employees. Barbara Hollings has been with Sellar & Sellar for 25 years, Sue Eagle, 24, Natasha Alloway, 12, Clare Jacobson, 10, and Claudia Morgan, 6 years.
Barbara reviews financial statements of a community based organisation, assists with the Masterton Food Bank collection and enjoys playing tennis and twilight golf.
This is matched by the long term relationships they have with many of their clients, which is encouraged by Sellar & Sellar’s three partners - Dominic Stewart, Graeme Bayliss and Craig Clouston - with all five women enjoying this aspect of their work. “We’ve got a lot of loyal clients,” Barbara says. “Most of our clients have been with us a long time and that builds strong relationships. I think our clients really appreciate dealing with the same accountant year after year.” The partners also encourage the staff to follow their passions and interests. This is something everyone appreciates, says Susan, the gypsy amongst the team who relishes the opportunity to travel to exotic parts of the world. With over 130 years of close relationships with clients in the Wairarapa’s towns as well as farming community, Sellar & Sellar places great importance on being part of the community. Just last year the firm closed its doors for the day and the entire staff went to Pukaha Mount Bruce Wildlife Centre for a volunteer day.
Individually, each of the five women are involved in their own communities.
Susan has been very involved with Wairarapa netball communities and the Carterton Netball Club as a player, coach and administrator, and is a member of the Local Leadership Team for Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand. Natasha is the glue in her big family, with a passion for researching her family history and who has achieved a double degree in Law and Accounting. She is often supporting her nieces and nephews through various hobbies and adventures. Clare is an avid sports person who volunteers with Netball Wairarapa. Sellar & Sellar supported her three week adventure at Outward Bound where “she learnt how to toughen up.” Originally from Leipzig in Germany, Claudia is the treasurer of the Wairarapa Branch of the Royal New Zealand Plunket Society and helps in various other community committee roles. She has recently begun to learn the trombone with the Masterton District Brass Band. It is their passion for what they do and their close client relationships, along with a mutual respect and camaraderie with each other, that keep these women enjoying their roles at Sellar & Sellar.
The firm also acknowledges its community obligations by continuing to be a Life Flight

PERSONALISING YOUR DREAM HOME WITH
STELLA LENNOX AND DIANE NORRIS AT JENNIAN HOMES When you build your own home, you want it to be as close to what you imagined. That’s all the more possible using the talents of Architect Designer Diane Norris and Project Liaison and Interior Designer Stella Lennox. Stella has recently joined Diane at the Jennian Homes Wairarapa office and show home in Chapel Street. Stella is well-known for running her own interior design business Lennox Design Studio in Masterton. Diane has been with Jennian Homes for eight years winning a raft of awards at the prestigious Master Builders House of the Year since then. Over 70 percent of the homes constructed by Jennian in the Wairarapa are Design & Build. Diane says many of her clients are surprised to find that the Design & Build service is much more affordable than they expected. “People believe a Design & Build is more expensive than a standard plan from a book but this is not the case. We can Design & Build for all sizes and all budgets.”
Stella’s role includes liaising with clients throughout the project and she also offers each client a complimentary interior/exterior design consultation at the start of their project. “This is always a particularly upbeat moment in the process,” Stella says. “I’ve never met a client yet who wasn’t excited – whether they are building their first home or are an experienced property developer.” She starts with the artist’s impression and plans of the new home as created by Diane. Stella has the unusual gift of being able to get a three dimensional vision of a home from the plans without the aid of a computer. This gives her a rough guide as to where to head with the consultation which she then fine tunes with the client. This includes everything from the external and internal colour schemes, to the floor coverings, fittings and even furniture. “There are a huge variety of options available, in just the paint colours alone. We can even incorporate features they already own - an old clawfoot bath for instance – into the overall aesthetic!”

SERENE
A SERENELY SUPERIOR BEAUTY EXPERIENCE WITH
ANA EDWARDS
The Maori name ‘Ana’ means ‘Serene’ in English, so there couldn’t be a more appropriate name than Serene Beauty Therapy for the business Ana Edwards has established in a quiet location in Carterton. Ana has been a qualified beauty therapist for over 22 years. She grew up on a dairy farm in the South Wairarapa before studying at the New Zealand Institute of Electrolysis and Beauty Therapy in Palmerston North. Ana was a beauty therapist in Geelong near Melbourne for 11 years before returning to Carterton and opening Serene Beauty Therapy a year ago. While Ana is the sole beauty therapist at Serene, her two constant companions are Environ Skin Care & Jane Iredale make-up. “I love them,” she says . “After working and experiencing many different skin care ranges Environ has been the one product that has always stood out on its own for me, giving quick results to the skin which builds trust and life-long relationships
with my clients. Our Jane Iredale make-up range compliments Environ because it is a treatment make-up designed to nurture the skin, not irritate it.” Ana offers all beauty services at Serene from waxing and electrolysis to manicures and hot stone massage. All the treatments have their place, she says. “As a beauty therapist our job is to make our clients feel great inside and out and there is nothing more rewarding for me than to help make that happen. The client leaves with a big smile on their face after making their next appointment.” Ana’s favourite treatment is the “Eye-Trio” which includes an eyelash tint, eye brow tint and eye brow shape. “It naturally frames and enhances the eyes while the client relaxes with the choice of a hand or scalp massage and is so affordable for anyone. Everybody loves that.” Clients also appreciate the beautiful space that Ana has created and the tranquil location of the clinic where you can take time out to re-lax and re-charge.

Janet has now left the centre, while Midwife Julia Black joined Wrigley Street Health last August and Podiatrist La Donna Stancliffe-Deans in December 2013.

LA DONNA STANCLIFFEDEANS
CLAIRE BLEAKLEY - HOMEOPATH (RC HOM, BSC/ PSYC, DIP HERB)
I have been a Homeopath for 20 years after successfully seeking homeopathic treatment to overcome a serious chronic illness - epilepsy. Homeopathy restored my health by stimulating my body’s own natural response system and has successfully allowed me to live without fits for the last 19 years. Homeopathic remedies have been used for over 200 years. They are not tested on animals and are sourced from the natural kingdoms. They are safe, effective and deep acting. A Homeopathic consultation will take around 1 hour, with a 6 week follow up. The consultation is important, and takes into consideration the mental, emotional and physical symptoms of the person’s illness. Homeopathy can help with active acute illnesses like coughs and colds, flu, infections and allergies to slower chronic ones like depression and long term illnesses that flare up seasonally. I have published books, and attended and presented at conferences on homeopathy and worked with women in AIDS and Malaria clinics in Kenya. So if you are interested in looking further as to how Homeopathy can help you, please call me at Wrigley Street Health. Claire Bleakley - Health Care you can Trust.
Today Wrigley Street Health embraces all four professional women, each running their own businesses, and all with an holistic approach to health.
