How to be a polite smart phone user
W
hen out with friends, at a party, at a pub, at a restaurant or friendfamily meal try the following with your phone: Put it on “Do Not Disturb Mode” so that it only rings or texts when pre-approved family or emergency-type members call or text. This way, if there are certain numbers you really can’t miss if they call (and they likely will only call for an emergency or something urgent) you are covered. If DND isn’t an option: put your phone on vibrate. Put your phone away. Seriously. Why do you need your phone in sight? Having the phone on the table visually shows that you potentially may have more interesting people to chat with or things to do. Just put it away. If you can’t put your phone away for whatever reason: pile all the cell phones on top of each other in the middle of the table. The first person who reaches for their phone pays the bill. Yep.
You heard me. If you can’t be polite enough to be interested in your friends, then you can pay the bill. If you receive a text... IGNORE IT. The world will not implode if you don’t check the text and you know what- the text will still be there later...I promise. Even though the sound is disruptive, by ignoring the text you are showing your friends and family that THEY are more important. Let’s take a breath and connect in person instead. I swear it’s better. http://ecoyogini.blogspot. co.nz/2013/09/texting-is-rudesocial-etiquette-on.html

Rock on down to the library
W
hen you think about the library (if you do) you probably think about books. And there are so many good ones! I could spend the whole time talking about the top favourites at the moment; anything by John Green, how dystopian is so last season and realism (real life angst) is in, that any book made into a movie is popular and how we love to compare them. That spy and war books by Jack Higgins, Chris Higson, and Robert Muchamore are the top picks for boys. But do you know about the other stuff to do in the public libraries? (Besides snuggling on the couches). Both the Flaxmere and the Hastings Libraries have a dedicated ‘youth space’ that includes not only fabulous books but comfortable furniture and room to laze around. And yeah, it’s okay to do that! While a number of youth programmes are available for those that like to take part, if you are just looking for a space to
hang out and relax in then you are welcome to do that. It’s great to see young people rock in after school to sit and talk with friends, use the computers, or even do homework. In the Hastings Library you can wander upstairs to the activities area to play the piano. If you have friends that can sing, bring them along! We are considering having a guitar on site in the Hastings branch that you can ‘issue’ for an hour – one young guy advised us they could ‘swap a shoe’ like they do at school when they borrow a school resource. Hilarious, but possible. So if you are looking for something to do, come on down to the library. Ask about the teen book clubs, teen movie nights, games nights, drama workshops or just do your own thing. The library, it’s your place too!

Students to help rebuild VANUATU
S
even hand-picked Maori and Pacifika students enrolled in EIT trades programmes are gearing up for the trip of a lifetime, helping to rebuild medical centres in Vanuatu after its lashing by Cyclone Pam earlier this year. The plumbing, electrical, carpentry and automotive students will leave New Zealand in late September and spend 10 days in the island nation. Accompanied by EIT tutors, they will re-roof and re-clad a health centre in the remote village of Paunagnisu and upgrade a medical centre in Erakor in the south of the island group. The students are from a Manakura group, an EIT initiative supporting Maori and Pacific Island achievement. Over the last two years, groups of students, identified for their leadership potential, have participated in training sessions in Waiouru and Aramoana and Todd Rogers, EIT’s head of school for
trades and technology, says the upcoming trip to Vanuatu will also extend the students taking part. “It is such a good opportunity for these young people. We will sleep under the stars for the first few nights until we get the roof on the building at Paunagnisu, and will be catering for ourselves, eating rice, fish and from army ration packs. “The students will work from 5am and stop for a couple of hours to avoid the hottest time of day. After a few more hours work in the afternoon they will play soccer with the villagers. To prepare for the trip, they are meeting every weekend to learn pidgin English. “You get a better response if you speak the local language,” Todd explains. The students are also being briefed on island culture and medical requirements for their trip
and are undertaking training in construction. Major sponsors – Skills Organisation, MITO (the industry training organisation for the motor industry), the Certified Builders Association of New Zealand, ITM and the EIT Students’ Association – have contributed $12,000 towards the cost of the venture but Todd points out that a further $14,000 is needed. He and carpentry programme coordinator Steve Spooner, who have both worked in the islands while serving in the New Zealand Army, scoped the work needed
on the targeted facilities on a recent fact-finding mission to Vanuatu. Sweeping across the archipelago in March, Cyclone Pam claimed 16 lives, demolished buildings and flattened crops. Paunangisu is located on the coast hardest hit by the category five storm which unleashed winds of up to 300km/h. “There were stories of families digging holes and lying in them to shelter from the cyclone. Its ferocity was such that it blew shipping containers around like cardboard boxes.”
Cory ryy Atkenson, left, Jarrod Rogers-Hughes, Jacob Renall and Rayne Hungahunga are part of the team off to Vanuatu in September.

“I skate therefore I am.” Porterhouse Skate
F
or Charlotte Porter, founder of Bay City Rollers or BCR for short, roller derby is a lifestyle choice. Traditionally a female sport roller derby has its origins in the USA in the 1930s. It’s hard physically and gruelling but the joy is yours if you really want it, she says. The Bay City Rollers is Hawke’s Bays original premier competitive Roller Derby league, comprising team members from both Napier and Hastings. Formed in late 2009 and celebrating their fifth birthday plus many official bouts under their belts for 2015 this league is going from strength to strength! What began with a handful of dedicated skaters teaching themselves the basics of roller derby via the internet now boasts 60 members. Enjoying this huge influx of new members as the popularity of roller derby grows internationally and locally the Bay City Rollers have expanded into two competitive teams: The Iron Maidens, the travel team and the Twisted Sisters, the development team. Don’t be fooled by their hot pink nail polish and lipstick as these girls are a force to be reckoned with on the track. There’s a real sense of sisterhood within this tight-knit yet diverse group of women and with their team of coaches at the helm and training them hard - these ladies are determined to win. It’s a fantastic contact sport that brings not only companionship but weight loss and fitness. All Bay City Rollers adopt pseudonyms such as Lone Wolf, Honey Grenade, Evenger, Feryl West, Kill Billy, Garbo Gal, Sugar ‘n Spite, Krash Bambi Kute and Happy Killmore. Charlotte’s moniker is Porterhouse Skate which is an interesting derivative of porter and steak! There’s also a whole new dictionary for newcomers to learn- words such as jamming, blocking and freshmeat. There’s also a rule book of 70 pages! This year BCR has introduced a junior team called Guns & Roses, one of only four junior teams in New Zealand. This version of derby is positional

Find your Spirit of Adventure
T
he Spirit of Adventure provides one of the best and most unique youth development programmes in New Zealand. Beth Humphrey aged 18 (pictured) completed her 10-Day voyage and loved the experience so much, she has since returned to do further programmes and sail as volunteer crew. “My 10-day voyage was such an incredible experience. I learnt so much about myself and it gave me confidence in my ability to lead others. At the same time I discovered my love for the sea – that was pretty special.” Each year 1200 young people get the opportunity to attend a Spirit of Adventure programme. These youth gain skills they need to help them succeed into adulthood. “Onboard we were all involved with planning out our day and I returned home from my voyage being better equipped to set
myself plans – this has been really beneficial for my work at school and Uni.” Otago University research also proves that Spirit of Adventure’s programmes delivers long term benefits for young people with results indicating that students coming off the ship show a marked increase in self-esteem, resilience and social skills. These voyages aren’t a holiday on a ship. They’re about 40 young people coming together from all over New Zealand and learning from each other skills in communication, leadership, selfdiscipline, resilience, co-operation, confidence and tolerance. If you or a young person you know is aged 15-18 years and would benefit from taking part in a 10-day programme or would like more information, get in touch with the Spirit of Adventure on 0800 4 SAILING or visit www.spiritofadventure.org.nz.

An attractive career choice
T
PORSE Education and Training General Manager Erin Maloney says they already run the NIPs courses in Hawke’s Bay, plus a number of other main centres throughout New Zealand. “The traditional nanny role is still very popular in New Zealand homes and is particularly
prominent in the main cities. It provides an attractive career for 17 to 25 year olds and it’s also affordable for families who can enjoy the benefit of a nanny for 20 hours a week.” Over the 20-week course the interns work through the National Certificate in Early
Childhood Education and Care (Level 3). On top of the 20 hours practical experience, they spend a day a week in the classroom, including lessons in early brain development, attachment theory, and care routines, right through to hearing from the Plunket Nurse.

omanes Park, in Romanes Drive, was officially opened on 12 April - a year after work began on the site. The park provides a 7000sqm community-funded BMX track, a major boon for Hawke’s Bay BMX Club, which had been pushing for upgraded facilities for five years.
It’s an open track which means anyone can ride, train and race there. But it is reserved for the BMX Club on Sundays in winter from 1-3pm and during summer on Wednesday evenings from 5.30pm onwards. If you can ride a bike without trainers then you can join the Hawke’s Bay BMX club.
BMX is a very family oriented sport, popular with all ages but especially teenagers and families. HBBMX Club Secretary Kelly McKay says It’s a great family activity, boosts adrenalin, is fun and a fantastic way to get and keep fit. For those interested in learning more or becoming members
Kelly says there’s an opportunity to go along to three club race meetings for free before joining the club. Becoming a licensed rider means riders can enter any BMX race in New Zealand, including North Island titles and the national championships. Respect your wheels
T
ony Kelly of Hastings Mag & Tyre has some good advice to keep your car in good working order. Scheduled maintenance is a must for your safety and also to prolong the life of your vehicle. Looking after the basics will help prevent nasty surprises, breakdowns and expensive bills. Having your tyres at the correct pressure makes your car stable on the road and assists with braking. Under or over inflation can lead to accidents. Tony recommends you check your tyre pressure every 6-8 weeks. You can find the correct pressure for your vehicle in the handbook and often inside the driver’s door. Check pressure before going on a long journey as heat increases pressure. Have a tyre retailer check the pressure- their gear is likely to be more accurate. They’ll look at the wear and tear and at the same time inspect the general condition of the tyres. Wheel alignment and tyre rotation will help your tyres last longer and keep you safe while driving.
Tyres are rotated, pressure is checked which prevents uneven wear and tear. It also adjusts the suspension and steering which keeps the vehicle on track. It’s recommended wheel alignment is done every 12,000kms or once a year.

Ideally both oil and water should be checked once a week. Without these a car will over heat or fail mechanically. Your service manual will recommend the correct oil. A service and oil change should be done every 10,000kms,
to ensure longer vehicle life and less maintenance in the long run. Wash your car and keep it clean of harmful elements such as salt, sand and mud which can all cause damage and lead to rust.

Taking a gap year before tertiary study What are the advantages of taking a year out? After 10 years in school you may feel like it’s time for a break from study! Or maybe you want to save some money to help cover your tertiary fees, and avoid a student loan. You can experience the world of work, become more mature, become more independent and experienced in your decisionmaking, clarify your study and career future, and make new or more informed decisions, work with people from different walks of life, experience different types of workplaces and learn new skills.
What sort of things can I do in my gap year? A year off from studying might be spent in your home town, perhaps working full-time in a job that was previously a part-time job. Or it might involve going to live with friends or relatives in another town or city where there are more
opportunities for full-time work. These jobs are often practical or labouring positions that may not relate to future study. A gap year can also involve working or travelling overseas. This could include working at summer camps in the USA such as Camp America, spending a year overseas
as a high school exchange student, being involved in volunteer social, environmental or conservation projects, participating in sporting or other cultural exchanges, working overseas as an au pair or nanny or teaching English overseas. Source http://www.careers. govt.nz/

You’ll be a year behind your friends who have gone on to study and you may find it hard to pick up certain subjects again, or get back into the study habit. You might not earn as much money as you hoped you might and possibly be tempted by a good offer when it may be in your best interests to study instead.

A bully is a person who uses strength or influence to harm or intimidate those who are weaker.
B
ullying involves a person, or a group, repeatedly and deliberately using their power to intimidate, hurt, repress, dominate or damage someone else. The person being bullied feels that he or she can do nothing to stop it. It can be concealed or cyberbased, physical or emotional. 1. Physical bullying: when physical actions such as hitting, poking, tripping or pushing, are used to hurt and intimidate. Repeatedly and deliberately damaging someone’s belongings is also physical bullying. 2. Verbal bullying: involves the use of negative words, like name calling, insults, and words used to deliberately upset someone. 3. Social bullying: when lies, the spreading of rumours or nasty

pranks are used. This includes repeated teasing and being deliberately left out of groups or activities. 4. Psychological bullying: involves the repeated and intentional use of words or actions which can cause psychological harm. Examples include intimidation, manipulation and stalking. 5. Cyber bullying: this is using technology to verbally, socially or psychologically bully. It can occur in chat rooms, on social networking sites, through emails or on mobile phones. These things can happen at school or at home, but they can also happen online or on social networks. Bullying can also be part of other forms of abuse,
23 including neglect, emotional, physical and sexual abuse.
Who do bullies pick on? Often bullies are bigger kids so they tend to pick on kids they feel are smaller, kids they think will not stand up to them or kids who have few friends to stand up to them.
Bullying isn’t
• Mutual arguments, disagreements or fights. • A single event of social rejection or dislike. • Single-episode acts of nastiness or spite. • Random acts of aggression or intimidation.
