anoe Polo, a spectacular and rapidly growing sport, is a game of two halves of 10 minutes where two teams of 5 players battle it out with a water polo ball. The aim is to score into a goal, which is suspended above the water at each end of a rectangular ‘playing pitch’. These pitches can be on open water or they can be on a swimming pool. Matches are controlled by referees and the fast, explosive action from players encompasses a wide range of canoeing skills including the Eskimo Roll. This is incredibly useful when a player is in possession of the ball and their opponent pushes them over. Overtime (golden goal) is used to decide tied games that require a result. Canoe Polo is a game for everyone. At club level thousands of players – boys, girls, men and women – compete against each other in competitions graded according to

skill level. Hawke’s Bay is the biggest club in New Zealand. A number of players from Hawke’s Bay go forward to compete both nationally and internationally. This year is no exception with a number of players who started their canoe polo career being chosen for our Under 21 and Senior Canoe

Polo New Zealand teams currently competing in Europe. Canoe Polo is now played by 50 countries in all continents of the world with increasing press and television interest. With Canoe Polo still growing in the Hawke’s Bay Region the club will in

the near future be providing quality refereeing assistance and developing our regions referees and coaches. Our focus on schools competitions is still a strong point and hopefully we’ll develop an outdoor venue to attract more national canoe polo to our region.

astings Intermediate’s Academy programmes- a model of excellence In 2009 Hastings Intermediate introduced an academy programme that has been commended as a ‘national model of excellence in student engagement and curriculum enrichment’. Key features include extensive opportunities to travel, the financial sponsorship groups that underwrite the majority of the academy costs and the large number of personnel who provide mentoring, tutoring and support for these students. The Academic Academy programmes extend and enrich students who have demonstrated a high academic ability in literacy, numeracy and inquiry learning. Work ex - helping with What does work experience involve?

Work experience is any paid or voluntary time that you spent in a workplace to get to know it better. There are many types of work experience, which can range from a one-off visit to a workplace, to internships that last months. Work experience also includes anything from mowing lawns, helping on the marae, babysitting, and working as a volunteer, to part-time work and on-the-job training.

What are the benefits of doing work experience? Work experience lets you see if you’d enjoy doing a job on a day-today basis. You can learn about a job or industry and make contacts. During work experience you can see first-hand what happens in a typical day on the job. Getting a realistic idea of the positive and negative parts of a job helps you make a more informed choice. Meeting people in the job means you can ask them questions, such

choice

as what they like best about their job, how they ended up in their line of work, and what qualifications they have. Meeting people in the job also helps you to start building a network of contacts in an industry you like, which can help you find a job later on. You can learn about related jobs in the same field, which could give you more ideas about what kind of career you might go into.

Improving your job opportunities later on Job advertisements often ask for people with experience. Work experience can be the kind of experience an employer is looking for. It also proves you were motivated enough to find out about their industry. Doing work experience lets a

potential employer see what kind of person you are - and you also get to find out about the employer. If the employer likes your attitude and you are a good fit for the company,

there could be a potential job offer later on. For a step-by-step guide to getting work experience visit www.careers.govt.nz

What’s hot this Statement Pant

? g n i r sp Playful Florals

Whether it’s a bold floral, in your face colour, or even a ripped boyfriend jean — no girl’s wardrobe is complete without a pair of statement pants this season. The trend will take you through those cooler days paired with a casual knit, but as weather warms the options are endless. We love this relaxed fit jogger $113 (available from asos. com), which does double duty — swap sandals for colourful heels to amp up the glamour. If you prefer a more fitted style, Glassons have a great range of slim cropped pants in designs as bold or subdued as you like.

Floral fabric is no longer relegated to grandma’s closet, everyone from high fashion designers to chain stores are cashing in on the young, fun and incredibly versatile print. There are so many different ways to wear them — from floaty frocks to breezy blouses — big and bright to sweet and understated. Hawke’s Bay designer Mia Undone’s Lily Dress, $170, from Guilty as Sin in Napier is casual yet elegant.

Crop Craze This look is best worn with high waisted denim shorts or skinny jeans during the day and fitted pencil skirt for evening. Avoid the temptation to show off too much skin, you want to channel Kylie Jenner, not an aerobics instructor from the 1980s. Try simple, laid back t-shirt or long sleeve style or a cropped singlet, like this one from asos.com, $58.03.

ccessories can make a plain outfit pop, or deliver a statement all on their own. This year, jewellery is taking a geometric turn, think cut metal ear cuffs, necklaces and rings. Pearls (not the kind your mother wears) are appearing as a bold feature on otherwise simple

designs. Floral head crowns no longer follow the ‘bigger is better’ rule, instead opt for dainty headbands in pastel flowers or tiny gold leaves. A floppy felt hat is a great investment for spring, and can be worn into the summer months. For something a little different, try metallic temporary tattoos which have been spotted on celebs, and are now accessible to the masses.

nsuring skin looks good now and into the future means adopting good habits early on. Random teenage break-outs can result in low self-esteem, but with the right products and some dedication to using them, it doesn’t have to be an issue. Peak Appearance owner Lara Molloy believes an all-round approach to skin care delivers the best results. She suggests starting with a simple routine of cleansing to remove oil, dirt, pollution and any makeup, but warns not to over clean or scrub the skin with harsh ingredients or exfoliants which actually can do more harm than good. “You have to clean skin, but not too much, I don’t like mechanical exfoliants, look for glycolic or salicylic acid instead,” she says.

“Teens need to stop trying to get rid of all the oil and be squeaky clean, they also need to hydrate and moisturise.” Smooth a light weight or oil free formula on the face and neck twice a day for a fresh, healthy look. Her most important tip is sun protection. “It’s vital, New Zealand, Hawke’s Bay especially has very high rates of melanoma, not all sunblocks make the skin greasy.” A good regime should start as soon as you start to notice excess oil production, whether that be at the age of 10 or 13. “Avoid using toner they generally contain alcohol and are too astringent, eat a healthy diet and drink lots of water. Retinol and Vitamin A are also good, and can be found in kumera, carrot and liver.”

Ultraceuticals SunActive sunscreen, available from Peak Appearance, is a non-greasy option for teenage skin.

OxygenTeen Soothing Moisturiser for Problem Skin/ Acne, from Ahuriri Pharmacy, leaves the face feeling fresh.

Oxygen Blemish/Acne Gel, Ahuriri Pharmacy, targets pimple-prone areas penetrating pores to unblock trapped dirt.

WHO: Kimbra: Pop with a twist WHAT:The quirky pop singer from Hamilton has made it on the international music scene, and for good reason. When Vows was released in 2011, it shot to the top of the charts in New Zealand and Australia, while a reworked version charted in America and Europe. Recent release, The Golden Echo shows us a different side of her with plenty of big, bouncy tunes, bound to get stuck in your head. WHY:You could never accuse Kimbra of following the crowd, we love Kimbra’s fashion choices almost as much as her music. WHO: Iggy Izalea: Hip Hop/ Rap artist WHAT: We have been following this blonde bombshell since she signed toT.I’s record label in 2012. Her first EP titled Glory had us excited for things to come. The release of debut full-length album The New Classic in April this year did not disappoint. It features hits such as Work, Bounce, Change your Life and Fancy. WHY: She’s sassy, exciting, original and Australian. WHO: John Legend: R&B/Pop artist WHAT: OK so he’s not new, but this guy knows how to write and has a voice that will send shivers down your spine. We were hooked when he burst onto the scene with the addictive hit, I Used to LoveYou, featuring Kanye West while tracks like Ordinary People showed he had depth. LastYear’s offering Love in the Future is notable for much more than the stand-out track, All of Me.

242 EMERSON STREET, NAPIER PHONE: 06 974 1771

WHY: He nails the lyrics, melodies and his voice has a richness that can’t be reproduced.

In spite of suffering serious injuries while training at a mountain-biking track near Tangaio in July Drew Strother, 16, is still determined to return to the sport although it could take a year for him to fully recover. Both Drew and his brother Wade, 15, of Napier have dedicated the last six years to vigorous training and competition schedules in their quest to ultimately compete in the junior Mountain Bike World Championships. They are members of the Hawke’s Bay Mountain Biking Club and regularly travel throughout the country to compete. It’s a disciplined sport with much training involved such as weight training and cross country biking. We look forward to seeing both the boys return triumphant in the not too distant future.

Cyberbullying advice for young people

C

yberbullying is bullying. It’s using the any device on the internet, like a mobile phone or a camera to hurt somebody or embarrass them. Bullying on the internet or mobiles can include many things, like being sent anonymous text messages to your phone, posting nasty or threatening comments on your Facebook or Instagram page or sending mean or embarrassing photos or videos of you to other people. Cyberbullying can involve people spreading rumours about you and scaring you. Sometimes people may try to stop you from communicating with others or they may hack and steal passwords for your online accounts. Cyberbullying takes many forms and some of these may be harder to deal with than others. Depending on the situation, some young people are able to sort it out quickly, or simply shrug it off. About 1 in 5 New Zealand high school students say they have been cyberbullied and many say it makes them feel scared, depressed, angry or ashamed. Posting mean or nasty pictures or videos of people or altered pictures online can embarrass them in front of their school and spread quickly out of control.

If you post pictures online these can exist long after you delete them and can also be used as evidence by teachers and police. If you are being cyberbullied tell someone you trust- a good friend, a parent, family member or a teacher. They will want to help you stop the bullying quickly and safely. If the bullying online or on your mobile involves physical threats, like threats to hurt or fight you, contact the police. Making threats of harm is criminal behaviour in New Zealand. NetSafe has information about online bullying or other online incidents, Freephone 0508 NETSAFE (0508 638 723). For more information see http:// cyberbullying.org.nz

ave you noticed lumps and bumps in places they shouldn’t be? Need more contraception or the emergency pill? Perhaps you’ve changed partners recently and started a new relationship. You can find support from one of the many sexual health services available inThe Bay from Central Hawke’s Bay in the south, to Napier and Hastings, and up to Wairoa in the north. If you’re aged 19 or under, you can go along to any general practice to see a nurse or doctor for sexual health checks, treatment, information and contraception. All of this is for free. Some of the practices even have late nights. Anyone aged 10 to 24 can also pop along to Directions Youth Health Centre in Hastings or Napier. Give them a call on 871 5307 to find out when they’re open. If you live in Wairoa you can go to general practices for free sexual health services up until you’re 25 (so you need to be 24 years and under). And if you’re still at school you can see your school health nurse – but remember, they’re not around during the holidays.

he chances are, unless you’ve just won Lotto, that your first car will be what they call “A little run around” or at least a reasonably modest vehicle. Brendan Addis is a Hastings car dealer with over 43-years-experience and a vast knowledge of vehicles, plus he also has plenty of good down to earth advice about buying your first car. Brendan would be the first to admit that he’s a bit old fashioned because he enjoys getting to know his clients and genuinely helping them. Many of his customers are extremely loyal and he’s serving some second and third generations of the same family. His advice today doesn’t relate to the merits of this car over that car, but is good, down to earth advice about money. Most young people haven’t had the experience in applying for finance so it’s nice for Brendan to be able to put them on the right track.

Assuming you can’t pay cash then finance will be required. For this you’ll need to be in employment, have proof of income and address. You need a minimum of a restricted licence too. Most people have to borrow and borrowing for a first car is the start of building a good credit rating. Finance companies will check to make sure you do not over commit financially. When budgeting don’t forget that cars need registering, licencing, insuring, petrol and maintenance. Think about what you want from a car. For some it will be economy, something sporty, manual or automatic, a hatchback, price, colour and technological features. Finally buy from a reputable dealer such as Registered Motor Vehicle Trader (RMVT) and remember that under the Consumer Guarantees Act a car has to be of saleable quality.
