Title: “Nevsky Prospect” and “The Nose” Author: Nikolai Gogol Nationality: Russian Type: Illustrated book Number of pages: 24 Illustrations: Maria José Matamala & Camila Navas Rothlisberger Influenced strongly by the Sentimental movement, the protagonist of “Nevsky Prospekt” is a pathetic and insignificant romantic, the narrator is chatty and unreliable, (along the lines of Tristram Shandy, the definitive Sentimental novel) and realism dominates. The story is organized symmetrically; the narrator describes Nevsky Prospekt in great detail, then the plot splits to follow in turn two acquaintances, each of whom follows a beautiful woman whom he has seen on the street. Title: “The lady with the dog” Author: Anton Chekhov Nationality: Russian Type: Illustrated book Number of pages: 24 Illustrations: Camila Navas Rothlisberger It tells the story of an adulterous affair between a Russian banker and a young lady he meets while vacationing in Yalta. The story comprises four parts: part I describes the initial meeting in Yalta, part II the consummation of the affair and the remaining time in Yalta, part III Gurov’s return to Moscow and his visit to Anna’s town, and part IV Anna’s visits to Moscow. One of Chekhov’s most famous pieces of short fiction, Vladimir Nabokov declared that it was one of the greatest short stories ever written. Title: “Anna Karenina” (fragment of the novel) Author: Leo Tolstoy Nationality: Russian Type: Illustrated book Number of pages: 24 Illustrations: Camila Navas Rothlisberger Is a novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, published in serial installments from 1875 to 1877[2] in the periodical The Russian Messenger. Tolstoy clashed with editor Mikhail Katkov over political issues that arose in the final installment (Tolstoy’s negative views of Russian volunteers going to fight in Serbia); therefore, the novel’s first complete appearance was in book form in 1878. Title: “The Gypsies” (poem) Author: Alexander Pushkin Nationality: Russian Type: Illustrated book Number of pages: 24 Illustrations: Camila Navas Rothlisberger The last of Pushkin’s four ‘Southern Poems’ written during his exile in the south of the Russian Empire, The Gypsies is also considered to be the most mature of these Southern poems, and has been praised for originality and its engagement with psychological and moral issues.[2][3] The poem has inspired at least eighteen operas and several ballets.
