PATH OF LIFE Pre - Conception / Babies

Starting early for a healthy start You’re planning for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. Whether it’s your first or third; whether you’ve only just started thinking about getting pregnant or if you’ve started on the Assisted Reproductive Technologies journey — now is the time to start Preconception Care. Preconception Care gives your baby the best possible start. We all know ‘‘you are what you eat’’, so the health of any pregnancy and child is affected by the health and lifestyle of both parents. Paula Harris (pictured), from Elements Natural Therapy, says that Preconception Care is vital in modern times, ‘‘because healthy adults start with healthy

babies, and healthy babies start with healthy parents’’. Some of her clients have fertility issues (including menstrual problems, sperm quality issues or endometriosis), while others are simply wanting to have greater control of their pregnancy. The key, she says, is starting early. ‘‘What you eat and how

you live today affects the sperm that will be used in four months time, and the egg that will be released in three months, so a bit of forward planning is needed to ensure that those basic building blocks are as healthy as possible.’’ Paula, a qualified naturopath who is currently completing a post-graduate certificate in fertility and reproductive health, points to work by Foresight Research (UK) that shows that Preconception Care can greatly improve conception rates, with an 81 per cent success rate for previously infertile couples. Because Preconception Care is natural and noninvasive, it can also work easily alongside IVF and other ART options.

Natural approaches to fertility have been used for centuries and offer couples the chance to feel more in control and able to contribute towards the solution to their problem. “After nearly three years of unexplained infertility we had almost given up hope of ever becoming parents. Paula took a very detailed history of my cycles, nutrition and general health and prescribed Natural Fertility Management supplements, with a personalised preconception plan. I noticed positive changes in my cycles immediately and am now pregnant with our first child after only 3 months of taking my “magic pills”! I am continuing to take NFM products as prescribed and feel fabulous! Thank you so much Paula” Andrea

Wiring up for life How a baby’s brain develops in the first three years of life is critical for helping them on their positive journey to building lifetime success and a lifetime of loving relationships. PORSE Managing Director Jenny Yule says science has shown that the first three years is when a child’s brain is at its most critical stage of influence and development. ‘‘Life issues start and arise from how carefully we are wired-up for life from the moment we are conceived and then as a baby,’’ she says. ‘‘In-home Educators play a vital role in influencing how the brain absorbs and connects feelings and experiences. Their brain will grow when they’re in loving secure attachment relationships based on love, trust and respect.’’ Manawatu consultant Lisa

Beatson says more parents in the region are choosing in-home childcare because they value this personalised care and the secure attachment relationships their children have with their educators in a settled home environment where natural play and learning can occur. PORSE is also a nationally approved training organisation where in-home educators benefit exclusively from courses and programmes that have been developed over the past 20 years to address the gap in practical knowledge for parents and educators about early brain development. ■ PORSE is a New Zealand-born training and education programme specialising in childcare for underfives and babies in loving home environments.

■ PORSE has over 40 community teams nationwide offering family and parenting support and training. ■ PORSE has more than 6,000 children enrolled onto the PORSE Programme that offers children time for natural play and learning. ■ PORSE supports more than 5,000 working educators and students in training nationwide. ■ PORSE is a privately registered and approved NZQA accredited provider of unit standards and courses to secondary school and tertiary students of all ages. ■ For more details on how you can give your children the best start in life, phone PORSE Manawatu on (06)357 7766 or visit www.PORSE.co.nz vacancies are available now!

Our Connections are made for life Babies are born learning, making the first three years the most critical for early brain development. This is when positive foundations are set in the brain for wiring-up lifetime experiences and learning self-regulation. Our minds determine our thoughts, behaviours and actions. We all help a baby’s brain grow when we choose to build secure attachment relationships based on love, trust and respect.

Rongotea School is a full primary school; students are with us from the time they start school as five year olds, to when they leave as Year 8 students moving on to high school. As a school community we proudly acknowledge our rural heritage which encompasses a strong system of values, a sound work ethic, activity within the community and an overall sense of belonging. Our school motto, ‘‘Together We learn, Together We Grow’’ is the basis from which we work as a learning community. Our current roll is 104 students. Due to roll growth we are in the process of selecting a new teacher and opening up another classroom. We have quality teachers, fantastic children and a supportive community. Last year our ERO review feedback noted the following: ‘‘Students are highly engaged in purposeful learning and they are confident and selfmotivated. High quality teaching results in students gaining sound foundation skills for learning. The school vision that students are confident, self-motivated learners is strongly evident.’’ — (ERO Review 2011) For families who are moving into the area please feel free to phone us on (06) 324 8614 or send an email to office@rongotea.school.nz. Designing for success ‘‘At the end of every year, I say ‘this is the best year we’ve ever had’. I sort of sound like a cracked record, but it’s true.’’ Thusly does Mike Saywell, managing director of the

Palmerston North School of Design, describe how his students continue to flourish, achieve and set new standards. ‘‘We go from strength to strength every year,’’ he

continues. ‘‘We’re doing really good work.’’ Good design is the engine of innovation and new ideas for arts and business alike, Mr Saywell says, and as one of the top

design schools in the country, the School of Design is at the heart of that engine. Students graduating have an edge in gaining entrance to internationally recognised degree courses at Massey University and UCOL, and from there they export their skills to the world. Former students have gone on to work at Weta Digital, prestigious advertising agencies, or even farther afield. The School of Design course typically lasts two years. Students begin with a foundation in the basics before branching out into either digital or fashion design. If those aren’t where you want to go, that’s okay. ‘‘Design is all about creative thinking,’’ Mr Saywell says. ‘‘The core creative skills can apply in many other areas.’’ Most students are school leavers, but mature students can sign up too. ‘‘The course gives them the opportunity to reengage and have a more

fulfilling career.’’ Design is a relentlessly interesting field, and other countries look up to our skills. ‘‘There’s almost the

expectation that Kiwi designers can do the impossible,’’ says Mr Saywell. ‘‘New Zealand is years ahead of anywhere else in that respect.’’

Teen parents get ahead

Laughter fills the room as the young mums at the Whakatipuria Teen Parenting Unit take a morning off to enjoy a hair and beauty course. It’s a bit of fun as the end of term approaches, breaking up their usual schoolwork routine, but there’s a lesson hidden within it as well: the girls are gaining confidence that will see them in good stead for future job interviews. Consider it part of the ‘‘wraparound service’’ that Whakatipuria offers. As well as regular schoolwork, there are classes in parenting skills, health and budgeting. Students get further help and advice from a social worker, a public youth health nurse and Plunket. It is this extra support that leads to the girls’ success, says teacher-in-charge Jenny Johanson. ‘‘We’re quite proud of how well our girls do, and it’s the support that makes all the difference.’’ Whakatipuria’s goal is to have all its mums leave with NCEA level 2, but they’ve

surpassed that mark, with most of the girls gaining level 3 and university entrance — including gaining merit or excellence in some individual standards — before heading on to UCOL or Massey University. With a maximum of 10 students per teacher, a van picking students up from home and delivering them to school, and an adjacent ECE centre to look after their kids, Whakatipuria is concentrating on removing as many barriers to education as possible. ‘‘The students’ culture is amazing,’’ says Mrs Johanson. ‘‘They help each other out, and they have a huge collective knowledge.’’ New arrivals are welcomed with open arms and quickly made to feel at home. Becoming a mother — or father — in your teens no longer means you have to drop out of school. Young parents are able to continue their education at Whakatipuria while having their child looked after, and gain valuable new life skills in a friendly and welcoming environment.

We offer a regular secondary school curriculum Star and Gateway programmes available

• Most students who attend have their children cared for by the attached child care centre • There are opportunities for parents and children to learn together and celebrate important occasions such as birthdays. • The unit is staffed by specialist Secondary teachers and supported by agencies such as PAFT, Plunket, health nurses and social workers.

Inflation, longevity and the elephant in the room! what the RBNZ is telling us? Ask anyone who fills their car or buys groceries if the cost of living has only increased by 2 per cent in the past 12 months. I think you’ll find the answer is that most of us have noticed the cost of living continually increasing. Here’s the real kicker: inflation eats into the purchasing power of

retirees, or that of anyone else on a fixed income. As people live longer, even low levels of inflation will eventually erode the purchasing power they get from their income. To make things worse, money on deposit (presently earning around 4.5 per cent before tax) isn’t keeping up with inflation

There are two risks facing retirees that no one seems to talk about today. These are longevity and inflation. Last week the Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) published their inflation expectation survey. To quote: ‘‘One and two years ahead, inflation expectations continue to decline over the June 2012 quarter.’’ This expectation is based on the historic movement of the Consumer Price Index (CPI). This CPI is a theoretical basket of 690 goods and services including food, alcoholic beverages, tobacco, clothing, housing, household goods, health, transport, communications, recreation and education. Each class is provided a weighting depending on the importance to a household, and makes up a theoretical inflation rate proxy. The CPI is not a measure of average Q: What do you think is unique about your business. prices but a A. I suggest that anyone considering retirement talk to a certified financial planner. They will be able to look at ways to minimise the impact of

inflation on your nest egg. ■ John Barber (CFP) is the managing director of WealthDesign, a holistic financial coaching company in Palmerston North. A disclosure statement is available on request and is free of charge. For more information, contact the team at WealthDesign on 06 3555 884.

Keep enjoying the things you love At Enliven, we know that life doesn’t end when you retire. In fact, the retirement years can be a deeply rewarding time:— finally, you have the leisure for your favourite activities, or time to spend with friends and family. Enliven offers a wide range of services throughout the Manawatu region. Whether you’re looking for practical home help, retirement villas, or rest home, hospital-level or dementia care, Enliven has a service to suit you. Our Community Support service can help you maintain or increase your independence in your own home. Services include personal care, home help and rehabilitation. Our Enliven Homes, Brightwater and Willard in Palmerston North and Coombrae in Feilding, work to make sure older people can keep enjoying the things they love — whether it’s a favourite activity, a hobby, a task that makes them feel useful, or time spent with pets. It’s all part of our Positive Ageing philosophy, which works to combat loneliness, helplessness and boredom in older people’s lives. Willard Home is turning unused space into a cottage for residents’ family members, offering a private place for residents to spend time with their families. Meanwhile, Brightwater Home’s recreation team continues to

make its mark in the community, with craft tables and raffles raising money for items that residents want and need. Enliven is also implementing the pioneering Spark of Life approach to dementia care. Spark of Life works by focusing on the emotional, rather than just the physical, needs of a person with dementia. Coombrae Home recently added a colourful spark to its dementia unit with a rainbow mural designed and painted by a rest home resident. Enliven Positive Ageing Services is provided by Presbyterian Support Central, which has been committed to helping people in need, regardless of age, background or religious belief, for the past 100 years.

NURTURING: Enliven works to make sure older people can keep enjoying the things they love, including spending time with beloved pets.

What adds life to a life... doesn't change with age Older people can experience loneliness, helplessness and boredom. But they don’t have to. At Enliven, we encourage our clients to keep enjoying the things they love. We believe that having something to work towards matters at any age. So we make no excuse about using everything we can to remind not only our clients and potential clients, but also their family and whanau and everyone around them… that they’ve still got what it takes to live a life of their own choosing. Enliven Positive Ageing Services are provided by Presbyterian Support Central to support older people in their own home or in one of ours.
