The frame

Carbon construction

The Arctec R and Elite are Apollo’s lightest and stiffest frames ever, featuring a truly asymmetric design. In essence this frame has been designed in two halves. An oversize bottom bracket, offset seat tube and chain stays both of different diameters ensure maximum power is transferred to the rear wheel.

Different types of carbon offer different characteristics. Some of the lightest, most expensive carbons aren’t actually the best for adding strength to a frame. Our frames blend ultralight UD carbon with 12k weave in high stress areas to optimise the frame’s strength.

To balance this rigidity we employed super slim seat stays which deliberately provide an element of vertical flex to the frame. This not only delivers a comfortable ride but ensures that the rear wheel stays glued to the ground during sprinting or high speed cornering when pushing to the absolute limit.

These stress areas are further reinforced by step down technology a process that ensures the carbon is perfectly positioned to create a highly refined frame quality. The result is a frame with excellent strength to weight ratio.

Super slim stays provide balance to the ultra stiff chain stays by allowing for some vertical flex in the frame. These stays do not affect the overall rigidity of the ride and actually enhance grip during descents and cornering at high speed.

BB30 delivers unparalleled advantages over standard cranksets. The oversize axle increases the crankâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s torsional rigidity and allows for oversized bearings to mount directly into the frame without the extra weight of a bottom bracket shell. The result is a lighter and narrower crank setup, which positions your feet closer together. This narrower Q factor is a more bio-mechanically efficient position, which increases power output.

Apolloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s custom monocoque frames are engineered for the ultimate blend of weight, performance and reliability. The Hi-modulus carbon lay up is crafted to specifically target key stress areas such as around the bottom bracket junction. This helps to deliver maximum torque from the pedals through to the rear wheel without adding unnecessary weight in other areas. All our carbon frame designs are then run through fatigue and impact stress tests to ensure the highest standards of reliability and durability. The result is an outstanding frame with superb acceleration and responsive handling characteristics.

Further upgraded for 2011, Apolloâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 6061 super lightweight aluminium frames feature hydroformed, triple butted tubing, delivering our lightest, strongest and most responsive frames ever. The tubing is shaped in such a way that the widest, thickest part of the tube is closest to the weld joints. The resulting oversized tube junctions substantially increase lateral strength. Along the length of the tube the wall thickness decreases toward the central section the tube where the wall is incredibly thin and superlight.

Utilising multi-shaped and formed tube sets allowed our designers to create a frame that is both lightweight and aesthetically pleasing. The curved top tube in particular redirects stress away from the head tube and seat tube junction and adds an element of compliance to the ride. Similar shaping of the oversize down tube ensures the ride is rigid and responsive. Take a further look at our Cross bikes and you can see how the array of tube shapes mould seamlessly into a light weight frame that is both functional and striking.

The carbon centre of this frame showcases our technology at its best. By using advanced high modulus carbon lay ups we have been able to eliminate heavy alloy linkage points which would normally require lots of welding. All of these parts are seamlessly blended in carbon allowing us to make substantial weight savings of around 300g per frame. The carbon top tubes also provide material specifically where it is needed most resulting by increasing the stiffness through the seat tube junction and into the rear stays.

Shock technology and frame design improvements have come so far in recent years that for short travel applications the single pivot design offers substantial advantages. A single pivot frame requires less linkages and contact points resulting in a lighter frame with less maintenance. Fewer pivot points also mean there is less flex in the rear end when cornering and descending. This system also ensures that there is less that can go wrong, which typical of many overly complicated systems. Short travel frames are designed to be ridden fast. Our single pivot design skims over the top of obstacles and tracks faster over bumps than many other suspension designs. The rear shock is custom tuned to achieve an ideal travel path therefore limiting chain growth and preventing pedal induced bob.

Further upgraded for 2011, Apollo’s 6061 super lightweight aluminium frames feature hydroformed, triple butted tubing, delivering our lightest, strongest and most responsive frames ever. The tubing is shaped in such a way that the widest, thickest part of the tube is closest to the weld joints. The resulting oversized tube junctions substantially increase lateral strength. Along the length of the tube the wall thickness decreases toward the central section the tube where the wall is incredibly thin and superlight.
