Φίλες και φίλοι του Απόλλωνα, Σας χαιρετώ από ακόμη μία έκδοση του Match Program στο πλαίσιο του 115ου αγώνα της ομάδας μας στις Ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις.

Απόψε αντιμετωπίζουμε την ΑΖ Άλκμααρ στο πλαίσιο της 4ης αγωνιστικής του 5ου ομίλου. Η ολλανδική ομάδα προηγείται του βαθμολογικού πίνακα και είναι το ακλόνητο φαβορί για την πρόκριση.

Η φόρμα της στην αγωνιστική περίοδο 2022-23 είναι απίστευτη αφού μετρά 15 νίκες, δύο ισοπαλίες και μία ήττα σε 18 επίσημους αγώνες!

Παρόλα αυτά η ομάδα μας δεν φοβήθηκε στην Ολλανδία και παρουσίασε εξαιρετικό πρόσωπο αφού όποτε δεχόταν γκολ απαντούσε σχεδόν άμεσα. Όπως είπε και ο προπονητής μας μετά το τέλος του αγώνα, «μπορούσαμε για κάτι περισσότερο και πως για κάποιες λεπτομέρειες δεν είχαμε βαθμολογικό κέρδος».

Θεωρείται αυτονόητο ότι η ομάδα μας θα παραταχθεί στον αγωνιστικό χώρο με μοναδικό μέλημα τη νίκη η οποία θα μας διατηρήσει τις ελπίδες πρόκρισης. Όπως τόνισε άλλωστε και ο κ. Καταλά, «όσο έχουμε μαθηματικές πιθανότητες πρόκρισης, θα τις κυνηγήσουμε».

Κι απόψε είναι ίσως η τελευταία μας ευκαιρία.

Το αποτέλεσμα της Δευτέρας έδωσε αυτοπεποίθηση στους ποδοσφαιριστές μας ενώ οι επιστροφές κάποιων ποδοσφαιριστών δίνουν περισσότερες επιλογές στον προπονητή.

Η ομάδα εκπέμπει αυτοπεποίθηση, θέληση για διάκριση και πείσμα. Είμαστε σίγουροι ότι οι ποδοσφαιριστές μας θα δώσουν τον καλύτερο τους εαυτό για να φέρουν το επιθυμητό αποτέλεσμα.

Dear Apollon fans,

We salute you from another edition of the Match Program for our team’s 115th match in European competitions.

Tonight, we face AZ Alkmaar in matchday 4, of group E. The Dutch side leads the group and is the firm favorite to qualify. AZ Alkmaar’s form in the 2022-23 season is incredible with 15 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss in 18 official matches!

However, our club was not afraid of the Dutch side and showed great character, whenever they conceded goals, they responded almost immediately. As our coach said after the end of the match, “we could’ve hoped for more but not for some details we did not have a scoring profit”.

It is considered self-evident that our team will line up on the field with the only concern being the victory which will maintain our hopes of qualification. As Mr. Catala pointed out, “as long as we have a mathematical chance of qualifying, we will chase them”. And tonight, is probably our last chance.

Monday’s result has given confidence to our players while the return of some players will the coach even more options.

The team radiates confidence, a will to distinguish itself and stubbornness. We are confident that our players will give their best to bring the desired result.

«Η τελευταία μας ευκαιρία

για πρόκριση»

Γεια σας φίλες και φίλοι του Απόλλωνα, μετά από δύο μήνες παρουσίας μου στην ομάδα και 11 αγώνες έχουμε διαπιστώσει ότι η ομάδα βρίσκεται στον σωστό δρόμο.

Η αυτοπεποίθηση που κτίζεται μετά από κάθε επιτυχία είναι πολύ σημαντική γι’ αυτό που

θέλουμε να πετύχουμε και η νίκη απέναντι στην Ανόρθωση ήταν βοηθητική προς αυτό! Είμαστε χαρούμενοι για τους τρεις βαθμούς και για την ατμόσφαιρα που επικρατεί στην

ομάδα μετά από αυτή την επιτυχία αλλά δεν εφησυχαζόμαστε.

Ο αγώνας με την ΑΖ Άλκμααρ είναι εντελώς διαφορετικός, άλλη διοργάνωση σε ψηλότερο επίπεδο. Για να πετύχουμε θα πρέπει να κάνουμε το τέλειο παιχνίδι. Στην Ολλανδία

είχαμε πολύ καλή εμφάνιση αλλά όταν αγωνίζεσαι σε αυτό το επίπεδο τα λάθη στοιχίζουν. Τίποτα δεν μένει ασυγχώρητο στις ευρωπαϊκές αναμετρήσεις. Απόψε είμαι σίγουρος ότι θα τα πάμε ακόμη καλύτερα. Είμαστε πεπεισμένοι ότι το σημερινό παιχνίδι αποτελεί την τελευταία μας ευκαιρία για πρόκριση στην επόμενη φάση. Αν δεν κερδίσουμε είναι σχεδόν αδύνατο να περάσουμε. Παρόλα αυτά θα πιστεύουμε μέχρι την τελευταία στιγμή. Δεν θα τα παρατήσουμε.

Θα αγωνιστούμε με την ίδια φιλοσοφία και με σκεπτικό να έχουμε όσο το δυνατόν περισσότερη κατοχή της μπάλας. Όσο έχουμε τη μπάλα, τότε είναι λιγότερες οι ευκαιρίες που θα δημιουργήσει ο αντίπαλος. Πιστεύουμε ότι το κλειδί της επιτυχίας είναι η κατοχή της μπάλας. Με περισσότερη κατοχή, είναι πιο πιθανό να δημιουργήσουμε φάσεις για γκολ και να κερδίσουμε. Καλή μας επιτυχία!

«The tonight’s game is our last chance to qualify»

Hello supporters of Apollon, After two months in the team and 11 matches we realized that the team is on the right track. The self-confidence that is built after every success is very important for what we want to achieve and the victory against Anorthosis was helpful for this! We are happy for the three points and for the mood in the team after this success but we are not complacent.

The match against AZ Alkmaar is completely different, another competition at a higher level. To succeed we will have to play the perfect game. In the Netherlands we had a very good performance but when you compete at this level mistakes are costly. No errors go unpunished in European matches. Tonight, I’m sure we’ll do even better. We are convinced that tonight’s game is our last chance to qualify for the next phase. If we don’t win it’s almost impossible to go through. Nevertheless, we will believe until the last moment. We will not give up.

We will compete with the same philosophy and with the mindset of having as much possession of the ball as possible. As long as we have the ball, then there are fewer probabilities that the opponent will create chances. We believe that the key to success is possession of the ball. With more possession, we are more likely to create chances to score and win! Good luck to us!

Η ιστορία

Η AZ Alkmaar ιδρύθηκε επίσημα το 1967 μετά τη συγχώνευση των Alkmaar 54 και FC Zaanstreek. Το 1972, μετά από μερικά δύσκολα χρόνια στην ιστορία του συλλόγου, τα αδέρφια Klaas και Cees Molenaar αρχίζουν να παίζουν σημαντικό ρόλο στον σύλλογο. The history

AZ Alkmaar was officially formed in 1967 after the merger of Alkmaar 54 and FC Zaanstreek. In 1972, after some difficult years in the club history, the brothers Klaas and Cees Molenaar start playing an important role in the club. With their investments, also through Wastora - a successful household goods company, AZ faced a very successful time. With players like Kees Kist and Kristen Nygaard and later Ronald Spelbos, Hugo Hovenkamp, Peter Arntz, Johnny Metgod, Jan Peters, Pier Tol, Eddy Treijtel, Bert van Marwijk, Willem van Hanegem and Austrian striker Kurt Welzl. Georg Kessler became the famous coach of this memorable team. After winning the cup (1978), AZ Alkmaar even won the ‘double’ in 1981. AZ reached the final of the UEFA Cup in 1981 but lost against Ipswich Town over two games.

Dirk Scheringa was the chairman of the club from 1993 till 2009. Under his leadership the club finally got back to notable successes again. In the 2004-2005 campaign, AZ reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup. The well-known Co Adriaanse was coach during that special season.

Also remarkable is the amount of AZ-coaches with a huge background in international football like Ronald Koeman, Dick Advocaat, Marco van Basten and Louis van Gaal. In 2009, when Van Gaal was coach, AZ become for the second time national champions. Later in 2009, AZ faced very difficult times when chairman Dirk Scheringa and his company and main sponsor of AZ, DSB Bank, got bankrupted. It took a lot of effort but in the end, AZ was reshaped towards a modern, innovative and data driven club, with a clear football vision and inspiring ambitions.

AZ Alkmaar is well known for their impressive AZ Youth Academy. Many youngsters made their debut in professional football, after many years in the AZ Youth Academy. It’s not surprising that many players made it to the national team, like Teun Koopmeiners, Guus Til, Owen Wijndal, Calvin Stengs and Myron Boadu. After making well deserved transfers to other big European teams, the next generation of the AZ Youth Academy is already there to make impact. Youngsters like Sem Westerveld, Peer Koopmeiners, Maxim Dekker, Zico Buurmeester, Ernest Poku and Myron van Brederode are officially part of the first team of AZ Alkmaar. AZ U18 became national champions and cup winners last season. Therefore, the oldest youth team plays for the second consecutive year the prestigious UEFA Youth League.

AZ Alkmaar won two national Championships (seasons 1980-1981 and 2008-2009) and four times the Dutch national cup (seasons 1977-1978, 1980-1981, 1981-1982 and 20122013). Also, after winning the Dutch national league, AZ won the Johan Cruijff Schaal (Supercup) in 2009. In Europe, AZ Alkmaar made a big impression by reaching the UEFA Cup final in season 1980-1981.

Ήττα με 3-2 στην Ολλανδία

Πολύ καλό πρόσωπο παρουσίασε η ομάδα μας στην Ολλανδία χωρίς ωστόσο να παίρνει το αποτέλεσμα που ήθελε καθώς έμεινε στη τελευταία θέση του Ε’ ομίλου με έναν βαθμό.

Η ΑΖ Άλκμααρ κέρδισε με 3-2 αλλά τις εντυπώσεις έκλεψε ο Απόλλωνας. Οι Ολλανδοί προηγήθηκαν 1-0 με τον Όντγκαρντ ωστόσο ο Γιόστεν ισοφάρισε σχεδόν άμεσα με κοντινή προβολή.

Οι γηπεδούχοι πήραν εκ νέου προβάδισμα με εύστοχη εκτέλεση πέναλτι του Ντε Βιτ αλλά και πάλι η ομάδα μας είχε την απάντηση με ένα υπέροχο γκολ του Καμπράλ με σουτ εκτός περιοχής. Δυστυχώς η ποιότητα των Ολλανδών φάνηκε στο τέλος πετυχαίνοντας και τρίτο γκολ με τον Κάρλσον με κεφαλιά.

Οι ποδοσφαιριστές του κ. Καταλά παρά την ήττα, είχαν πολύ καλή εμφάνιση και στο τέλος αποθεώθηκαν από τους 1200 και πλέον οπαδούς της ομάδας μας στο AFAS Stadion.

Ιστορικό το γκολ του Γιόστεν!

Όπως αναφέρθηκε και πριν, κατά τη διάρκεια και μετά το τέλος του αγώνα, το πρώτο γκολ του Γιόστεν με την ομάδα μας ήταν και το πρώτο γκολ κυπριακής ομάδας επί Ολλανδικού εδάφους κάτι που καταδεικνύει τη διαφορά επιπέδου των δύο χωρών.

Ένα άλλο σημαντικό στοιχείο είναι το γεγονός ότι ο Ολλανδός μεσοεπιθετικός σκόραρε για τρίτη φορά κόντρα στην ΑΖ Άλκμααρ. Οι προηγούμενες δύο ήταν για τον θεσμό του Ολλανδικού πρωταθλήματος. Η πρώτη περίπτωση ήταν το 2016 με τη φανέλα της Ουτρέχτης χωρίς ωστόσο να έχει αντίκρισμα αφού η ομάδα του ηττήθηκε με 1-2 και η άλλη το 2018 με τη φανέλα της Φένλο το οποίο ήταν και δραματικό καθώς επιτεύχθηκε στο 3ο λεπτό των καθυστερήσεων χαρίζοντας ένα βαθμό για την ομάδα του.

First Game:

ΑΖ won 3-2

Our team showed a very good performance in the Netherlands, but did not get the result they wanted as we remained in the last place of the 5th group with one point. AZ Alkmaar won 3-2 but Apollon stole the show. The Dutch went 1-0 up through Odgaard but Josten equalized almost immediately with a close-range shot.

The home side took the lead again with De Wit’s well-timed penalty but once again our side had the answer with a superb goal from Cabral with a shot from outside the area. Unfortunately, the quality of the Dutch was shown in the end by scoring a third goal with Karlsson’s header.

The football players of Mr. Katala, despite the defeat, had a very good performance and in the end they were adored by the more than 1200 fans of our team at the AFAS Stadion.

Joosten’s goal is historic!

As mentioned before, Joosten’s first goal with our team was also the first goal of a Cypriot team on Dutch soil, which demonstrates the difference in level between the two countries.

Another highlight is the fact that the Dutch midfielder scored for the third time against AZ Alkmaar. The previous two were for the institution of the Dutch league. The first case was in 2016 with the jersey of Utrecht without, however, having a response after his team was defeated 1-2 and the other in 2018 with the jersey of Venlo which was also dramatic as it was achieved in the 3rd minute of stoppage time giving away a point for his team.

Η κλήρωση των ομίλων του UEFA Europa Conference League της 26ης Αυγούστου έφερε τον Απόλλωνα στον 5ο όμιλο της διοργάνωσης έχοντας ως αντίπαλους την ΑΖ Άλκμααρ, τη Βαντούζ και τη Ντνίπρο-1.

Στην πρεμιέρα των ομίλων η ομάδα μας αντιμετώπισε εκτός έδρας τη Βαντούζ του Λιχτενστάιν όπου εξήλθε ισόπαλη χωρίς τέρματα. Στον

άλλο αγώνα του ομίλου η Ολλανδική Άλκμααρ επικράτησε της Ουκρανικής Ντνίπρο-1 με 0-1.

Στη δεύτερη αγωνιστική η ομάδα μας υποδέχθηκε την Ντνίπρο-1 στο

ΓΣΠ όπου ηττήθηκε με 1-3. Το πρώτο μας ιστορικό γκολ στους ομίλους της διοργάνωσης πέτυχε ο Ιωάννης Πίττας με κοντινή προβολή. Στον άλλο αγώνα της αγωνιστικής η ΑΖ Άλκμααρ επικράτησε της Βαντούζ με 4-1 με τα δύο τελευταία τέρματα να επιτυγχάνονται στις καθυστερήσεις του παιχνιδιού.

Στην 3η αγωνιστική η ομάδα μας αντιμετώπισε την πρωτοπόρο ΑΖ Άλκμααρ στην Ολλανδία παρουσιάζοντας εξαιρετικό πρόσωπο χωρίς ωστόσο να καταφέρνει να παίρνει θετικό αποτέλεσμα. Οι Ολλανδοί προηγήθηκαν σε δύο περιπτώσεις με την ομάδα μας να ισοφαρίζει και ισάριθμες φορές ωστόσο το γκολ στο 85’ έμεινε χωρίς απάντηση. Στον άλλο αγώνα του ομίλου Ντνίπρο και Βαντούζ έμειναν στο 2-2, αποτέλεσμα το οποίο αφήνει ανοικτή την υπόθεση πρόκριση μέχρι το τέλος.

The draw for the UEFA Europa Conference League group stage on August 26 brought Apollon into Group E of the competition with AZ Alkmaar, Vaduz and Dnipro-1 as opponents.

In the premiere of the groups, our team faced Vaduz, in Liechtenstein, where it ended in a goalless draw. In the other match of the group, the Dutch AZ Alkmaar beat the Ukrainian Dnipro-1 by 0-1.

In the second game, our team welcomed Dnipro-1 to the GSP where they lost 1-3. Our first historic goal in the competition’s groups was scored by Ioannis Pittas with a close shot. In the other match of the matchday, AZ Alkmaar beat Vaduz 4-1 with the last two goals coming in stoppage time.

In the 3rd matchday, our team traveled to face the group leader AZ Alkmaar in the Netherlands, presenting an excellent performance without, however, managing to get a positive result. The Dutch took the lead on two occasions with our team equalizing the same number of times, however the Dutch goal in the 85th minute remained unanswered. In the other match of the group, Dnipro - Vaduz were tied 2-2, a result which didn’t define the qualification from the group yet.

Τον 115ο της αγώνα στις ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις δίνει η ομάδα μας απόψε με αντίπαλο την ΑΖ Alkmaar. Σε σύνολο 114 αγώνων ο Απόλλωνας έχει 37 νίκες, 22 ισοπαλίες και 55 ήττες.

Η Άλκμααρ είναι πόλη και δήμος στην Ολλανδία, που βρίσκεται στην επαρχία της Βόρειας Ολλανδίας και είναι γνωστή για την παραδοσιακή αγορά τυριών της. Ο δήμος έχει πληθυσμό 109.896 κατοίκους από το 2021. Δήμαρχος σήμερα είναι η Anja Schouten.

To Άλκμααρ έχει πολλά μεσαιωνικά κτίρια που είναι ακόμα άθικτα, με πιο χαρακτηριστικό τον ψηλό πύργο του Γκρότε ή του Σιντ-Λάουρενσκερκ, όπου πολλοί κάτοικοι πραγματοποιούν γαμήλιες τελετές.

Η αγορά έχει παράδοση τεσσάρων αιώνων και την επισκέπτονται 100.000 άνθρωποι ετησίως. Λειτουργεί στην μεγάλη Πλατεία Βάαχ (Waagplein), όπου βρίσκεται το εντυπωσιακό και πολυφωτογραφημένο Κτήριο Βάαχ (=Κτήριο της Ζυγαριάς) (Waaggebouw). Η Αγορά τυριού ήταν τόσο σημαντική που, κατά τη διάρκεια του 18ου αιώνα, λειτουργούσε τουλάχιστον 4 ημέρες την εβδομάδα από τα ξημερώματα μέχρι τις 1 τα μεσάνυχτα. Κατά μέσον όρο διετίθεντο 300 τόνοι τυριού την ημέρα. Και άλλες πόλεις της Ολλανδίας είχαν αγορές τυριού, αλλά η συγκεκριμένη ήταν η μεγαλύτερη και, από το 1939, είναι πλέον η μοναδική στην Ολλανδία όπου το τυρί πωλείται με αυτόν τον τελετουργικό τρόπο. Σήμερα λειτουργεί μια μόνο φορά την εβδομάδα, κάθε Παρασκευή, από τον Απρίλιο μέχρι τον Σεπτέμβριο, για λίγες μόνον ώρες.

Στην Αγορά Τυριού οι παραγωγοί διαθέτουν το τυρί σε κεφάλια 4 διαφορετικών χρωμάτων: κίτρινο, κόκκινο, μπλε και πράσινο. Έτσι σχηματίζονται αντίστοιχες ομάδες που ονομάζονται φόρμεν (vormen). Όλοι οι παραγωγοί είναι ντυμένοι με παραδοσιακή λευκή ενδυμασία και φοράνε ψάθινο καπέλο. Φέρουν διαφορετικά προσωνύμια ανάλογα με το κύρος και τον τομέα εργασίας τους.

Το Άλκμααρ έχει δύο μεγάλα θέατρα και έναν μεγάλο κινηματογράφο (που αρχικά ήταν δύο κινηματογράφοι). Στο Achterdam

βρίσκεται μια συνοικία με τα κόκκινα φανάρια, ενώ το Alkmaar έχει επίσης σκηνή νυχτερινής διασκέδασης που λαμβάνει χώρα στις παμπ μπροστά από την τυροκομική αγορά.

Μερικά από τα δημοφιλή μουσεία στο Άλκμααρ είναι το Holland Cheese Museum (βρίσκεται στο ιστορικό ζυγιστήριο), το Εθνικό Μουσείο Μπύρας «De Boom», το Op Art Museum και το City Museum Alkmaar (για την ιστορία της πόλης).

Limassol is the second largest city of Cyprus with a population of approximately 180,000. It is one of six districts and covers an area of 34.87 km2. Located on the southern coast, Limassol stretches around westward to the Paphos district, bordering with the district of Larnaca on the east and with Nicosia on the north. In addition to the recognized popularity as a tourism destination, Limassol is also an administrative and business centre, a port, a resort, the centre of the wine industry and home to many archeological sites.

The vivacious city centre, seems to offer a journey through time where the University with its bustling young students aiming for a brighter future is just a few streets away from the old market and ancient castle which link us to the past. Gracefully blending old with new continues, as across the seafront one can appreciate the cosmopolitan side of Limassol with its contemporary business structures and modern apartment buildings while only several kilometers away one can find charming areas with cobblestone streets, quaint buildings with overhanging terraces under which there are a profusion of small shops, restaurants and cafes.

The city of Limassol has a rich history that goes back to around the 2nd century B.C. The city is situated between the ancient cities of Amathous to the east and Kourion to the west. Limassol was inhabited since the very ancient years and tombs discovered there date back to around the 2nd century B.C., while oth-

ers date back to around the 8th and 4th centuries B.C. The few ancient finds that were discovered show that a small settlement existed there which did not manage to develop and flourish.

The city, in the 10th century, was known as Nemesos and the Byzantine emperor, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, refers to this city with this name. The history of the city is mainly known for its events in 1191 A.D., which marked the end of the Byzantine Rule in Cyprus. Limassol was then surrendered to the Frankish Empire of the Lusignan Kings of the medieval Cypriot kingdom. For about three centuries (1192-1489), Limassol experienced a remarkable period of prosperity. In 1489 A.D., the Queen of Cyprus, Ekaterini Cornaro, surrendered Cyprus to the city of Venice. This lasted until the Turkish Occupation took place in 1570 A.D. Then the British conquered Cyprus in 1878, while in 1960 significant changes followed the liberation of Cyprus, which contributed to the cultural and artistic life of the city. Schools, theatres, art galleries, music halls and football clubs were formed and played a significant role in the cultural life of Limassol.

The city of Limassol was developed much after the Turkish invasion of 1974. Luxurious hotels, restaurants and numerous entertainment clubs were built and thus the city soon became a significant touristic centre.

CYPRUS The pearl of the Mediterranean

Cyprus is located in the northeast of the Mediterranean, at the intersection point of Europe, Asia and Africa. From the dawn of history, Cyprus consists one of the most interesting places of the area, with a rich cultural history. Ancient Greeks and the period of the Byzantine Empire have left a strong heritage, that nowadays, any visitor can visit and admire.

Cyprus is bordering with Greece, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Egypt. The north part of Cyprus has been occupied by Turkey since 1974. In 1983, after violating the Charter of the United Nations, Turkey proceeded into declaring the so-called «Turkish Democratic Republic of Northern Cyprus» that until today it is only recognised by Turkey. Cyprus is gifted with golden beaches, primeval forests and other wonderful natural landscapes. The environment of the island is now among the healthiest of the world, free of the pollution and other side-effects of the industrial counties. As far as criminality is concerned, it is almost non-existent.

Cyprus enjoys a wonderful Mediterranean climate. Apart from the rainfall period between November and March, Cyprus is constantly sunny. The average temperatures range from 8°C (42°F), during the coldest month, December, to 35°C (96°F) during the warmest month, which is August. However, weather is not the only attractive characteristic of the island. The people of Cyprus are equally famous, for the warm and friendly welcoming they provide to their visitors.

In May, 2004, Cyprus became officially a member of the European Union and in 2008 entered the Eurozone, thus connecting Europe and Middle East and the rest of the world.

Having been recognized as the ultimate business and financial centre in the wider area, the island has competitive advantages in sectors such as tourism, provision of consulting services, banking and insuring services, investments and construction business, shipping and telecommunications.

Η ΑΖ Άλκμααρ είναι η 3η ποδοσφαιρική ομάδα από την Ολλανδία την οποία κλήθηκε να αντιμετωπίσει ο Απόλλωνας στην πλούσια ευρωπαϊκή του ιστορία. Μετά λοιπόν από τις κορυφαίες ομάδες της χώρας των τουλιπών, Άγιαξ και PSV, συναντηθήκαμε με ακόμη ένα άλλο μεγαθήριο και μια από τις πιο φορμαρισμένες ομάδες στην Ευρώπη.

Σαφώς και πρόκειται για προηγμένη ποδοσφαιρικά χώρα και ως εκ τούτου οι ομάδες που αντιμετωπίζουμε από την Ολλανδία στην Ευρώπη έχουν πολλαπλάσιο μπάτζετ από το δικό μας. Η πρώτη Ολλανδική ομάδα που αντιμετωπίσαμε ήταν ο φημισμένος Άγιαξ το 2001 για τον θεσμό του UEFA Cup, προπομπό του UEFA Europa League. Στις δύο αναμετρήσεις για τον Α’ γύρο της διοργάνωσης, η ομάδα μας αποκλείστηκε με συνολικό σκορ 5-0 και απολογισμό δύο ήττες, 2-0 στο Άμστερνταμ Αρένα και 0-3 στο ΓΣΠ.

Μετά από 18 χρόνια η ομάδα μας κλήθηκε να ξεπεράσει το τεράστιο εμπόδιο της PSV στη φάση των Playoffs του UEFA Europa League για την αγωνιστική περίοδο 2019-2020. Οι Ολλανδοί προκρίθηκαν με δύο νίκες. Στον πρώτο αγώνα επικράτησαν με 4-0 στο Philips Stadion ενώ στο ΓΣΠ κέρδισαν με 0-3.

Στον αντίποδα, η ΑΖ Άλκμααρ δεν έτυχε ποτέ να αντιμετωπίσει Κυπριακή ομάδα στις ευρωπαϊκές διοργανώσεις. Σε ότι αφορά άλλες Ολλανδικές ομάδες οι οποίες αναμετρήθηκαν με κυπριακές, πέρα από τον Άγιαξ και τη PSV, υπάρχουν αναμετρήσεις με Φέγενορντ και Ντε Χάαγκ.

Η πρώτη φορά που κλήθηκε κυπριακή ομάδα να αντιμετωπίσει ολλανδική, ήταν το μακρινό 1971 όταν ο Ολυμπιακός αποκλείστηκε σε διπλούς αγώνες από τη Φέγενορντ στο Κύπελλο Πρωταθλητριών με συνολικό σκορ 17-0.

Η επόμενη φορά όπου αναμετρήθηκαν ομάδες από τις δύο χώρες ήταν το 1979 όταν η Ομόνοια αποκλείστηκε από τον Άγιαξ στη φάση των 16 του Κυπέλλου Πρωταθλητριών με συνολικό σκορ 10-4. Το 2011 η Ομόνοια κλήθηκε να αντιμετωπίσει στον 3ο προκριματικό γύρο του UEFA Europa League τη Ντε Χάαγκ κερδίζοντας την με 3-0 στο ΓΣΠ ενώ στην Ολλανδία ηττήθηκε με 1-0.

Το 2014 ο ΑΠΟΕΛ κληρώθηκε στον ίδιο όμιλο του UEFA Champions League με τον Άγιαξ καταφέρνοντας να μη χάσει στην Κύπρο, ωστόσο στο Άμστερνταμ ηττήθηκε με 4-0. Το 2019 οι δύο ομάδες ξανασυναντήθηκαν για τα Playoffs της ίδιας διοργάνωσης με τους Ολλανδούς να επικρατούν με συνολικό σκορ 2-0 και να προκρίνονται στους ομίλους. Το 2020 η Ομόνοια αντιμετώπισε στους ομίλους του UEFA Europa League την PSV χωρίς ωστόσο να τα καταφέρνει να παίρνει ούτε έναν βαθμό. Στη Λευκωσία ηττήθηκε με 1-2 και στην Ολλανδία έχασε με 4-0.

The pre-history in the European Cups

AZ Alkmaar is the 3rd football team from the Netherlands that Apollon has been invited to face in its rich European history. So, after the top teams of the land of tulips, Ajax and PSV, we met with yet another behemoth and one of the most in-form teams in Europe.

Clearly this is an advanced football country and therefore the teams we face from the Netherlands in Europe have disproportionately larger budgets than ours. The first Dutch team we faced was the famous Ajax in 2001 for the competition of the UEFA Cup, a precursor to the UEFA Europa League. In the two matches for the 1st round of the competition, our team was eliminated with an aggregate score of 5-0 by two defeats, 2-0 at the Amsterdam Arena and 0-3 at the GSP.

18 years later our team was draw to overcome the huge obstacle of PSV in the UEFA Europa League Playoffs stage for the 2019-2020 season. The Dutch qualified with two wins. In the first match they prevailed 4-0 at Philips Stadion while at GSP they won 0-3.

On the contrary, AZ Alkmaar has never faced a Cypriot team in European competitions. As for other Dutch teams that have faced Cypriots, apart from Ajax and PSV, there are encounters with Feyenoord and De Haag.

The first time a Cypriot team was drawn to face a Dutch team was way back in 1971 when Olympiacos were knocked out over two legs by Feyenoord in the Champions Cup with an aggregate score of 17-0. The next time teams from the two countries met was in 1979 when Omonia were knocked out by Ajax in the round of 16 of the Champions Cup with a 10-4 aggregate score.

In 2011, Omonia was invited to face De Haag in the 3rd qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League, beating them 3-0 in the GSP, while in the Netherlands they were defeated 1-0. In 2014, APOEL was drawn in the same group of the UEFA Champions League as Ajax, managing not to lose in Cyprus, but in Amsterdam they were defeated 4-0.

In 2019, the two teams met again for the Playoffs of the same event with the Dutch winning 2-0 on aggregate and advancing to the groups. In 2020, Omonia faced PSV in the UEFA Europa League groups without, however, managing to get a single point. In Nicosia they lost 1-2 and in Holland they lost 4-0. Before our team’s match in Alkmaar, no Cypriot team managed to score a goal on Dutch soil. Patrik Joοsten managed to “exorcise” this curse in the 19th minute with a close-range shot.

Θεωρείς τέλεια σύμπτωση το να σκοράρεις το πρώτο σου γκολ στα πάτρια εδάφη, μπροστά στην οικογένεια και τους φίλους σου; Πως αισθάνθηκες δευτερόλεπτα μετά το γκολ; Ήταν απίστευτη στιγμή για εμένα, η ισοφάριση του σκορ σε ένα σπουδαίο γήπεδο, με μια μεγάλη ομάδα μπροστά στους ανθρώπους που με αγαπούν. Ήταν ότι καλύτερο. Πάντοτε θέλω να βοηθώ την

ομάδα που αγωνίζομαι, είτε με γκολ είτε με ασίστ και ήταν τέλειο το ότι βρήκα το πρώτο μου γκολ σε αυτόν τον αγώνα. Είμαι πολύ χαρούμενος που βοήθησα την ομάδα, που παρουσιάσαμε αρκετά καλή εικόνα αλλά όχι από το αποτέλεσμα, πιστεύω ότι μπορούσαμε να πάρουμε κάτι περισσότερο.

Αγωνιζόμασταν με μία ολλανδική ομάδα, χώρα από την οποία κατάγεσαι, γνωρίζεις καλά το γήπεδο, δεν ήταν άλλωστε η πρώτη φορά που έπαιζες και σκόραρες στο συγκεκριμένο στάδιο. Το ένιωθες ότι θα ερχόταν αυτό το γκολ; Η αλήθεια είναι πως ένιωθα αυτοπεποίθηση ότι θα είχα καλή εμφάνιση, όχι πως θα σκοράρω μάλιστα. Στόχος μου είναι να σκοράρω σε κάθε παιχνίδι και όχι σε κάποια συγκεκριμένα. Έκανα το παιχνίδι μου, έδωσα ότι μπορούσα και ήρθε το γκολ, κάτι που όπως είπα πριν με χαροποίησε ιδιαίτερα επειδή έγινε μπροστά στην οικογένεια μου και σε ένα σπουδαίο γήπεδο.

Είσαι μαζί μας εδώ και δύο μήνες, η τελευταία χρονικά μεταγραφή της ομάδας μας. Ποιες είναι οι πρώτες σου εντυπώσεις; Είναι πολύ καλές μπορώ να πω. Μου αρέσει η χώρα, ο τρόπος ζωής των ανθρώπων εδώ, η Λεμεσός είναι υπέροχη πόλη για να ζεις, μπορείς να κάνεις ότι θέλεις και ότι χρειάζεσαι το έχεις. Ωστόσο το πρόγραμμα τη δεδομένη στιγμή είναι λίγο πιεσμένο και δεν έχω τον ελεύθερο χρόνο για να επισκεφθώ διάφορα μέρη της Κύπρου, αλλά γενικά είμαι πολύ ευχαριστημένος. Η ομάδα είναι πολύ οργανωμένη, με ποιοτικούς ποδοσφαιριστές που μπορούμε να πετύχουμε πάρα πολλά και να κερδίσουμε πολλές ομάδες. Όσο περνά ο καιρός η ομάδα βελτιώνεται περισσότερο και αισθανόμαστε πιο δυνατοί παιχνίδι με παιχνίδι.

Η εμφάνιση στην Ολλανδία άφησε υποσχέσεις για το μέλλον. Πιστεύεις ότι στην έδρα μας μπορούμε να κερδίσουμε; Είμαι απόλυτα σίγουρος ότι αν ήμασταν λίγο πιο συγκεντρωμένοι στο Άλκμααρ δεν θα χάναμε. Απόψε μπορούμε να κερδίσουμε και θα τα δώσουμε όλα για να το πετύχουμε! Αν τα καταφέρουμε θα δούμε τι θα μας φέρει ο βαθμολογικός πίνακας. Θα εξαντλήσουμε κάθε μαθηματική πιθανότητα για την πρόκριση στον επόμενο γύρο.

“I THINK WE COULD GET SOMETHING MORE IN NETHERLANDS”

Do you consider it a perfect coincidence to score your first goal on home soil in front of your family and friends? How did you feel moments after the goal?

It was an incredible moment for me, to score the equalizer at a great stadium, with a famous team in front of the people who love me. It was the best. I always want to help the team I’m playing for, either with a goal or an assist, and it was perfect to find my first goal in this match. I am very happy that I helped the team, that we presented a pretty good performance but not from the result, I think we could get something more.

We were playing with a Dutch team, a place you come from, you know the stadium well, it wasn’t the first time you played and scored at that ground. Did you feel that this goal was coming? The truth is that I felt confident that I would perform well, not that I would even score. My aim is to score in every game and not in specific ones. I played my game, I gave everything I could and the goal came, which as I said before made me very happy because it occurred in front of my family and on a great stadium.

You have been with us for two months now, the latest transfer of our team. What are your first impressions?

They are very good I can say. I like the country, the way of life of the people here, Limassol is a wonderful city to live in, you can do whatever you want and whatever you need you have it. However, the schedule at the moment is a bit busy and I do not have the free time to visit various places of Cyprus but in general I am very pleased. The team is very organized, with quality players who we can achieve a lot and beat many teams. As time goes by the team improves more and we feel stronger game by game.

The performance in The Netherlands left promises for the future. Do you think that we can win at home?
