HONORING OUR LEADERS

THE HISTORY OF THE APOSTOLIC ASSEMBLY The origins of the Apostolic Assembly are in the Day of Pentecost when Jesus, after his death and resurrection, filled his disciples gathered in Jerusalem with his Holy Spirit and power. Jesus again poured out his Holy Spirit in Los Angeles upon a group of believers on Azusa Street led by William Seymour, an African-American preacher. Mexican immigrants from the nearby Placita Olvera and Sonoratown neighborhoods were also filled with the Holy Spirit at Azusa Street. By 1912 the Los Angeles City Directory records two Mexican-American Apostolic churches, one led by Juan Navarro and the other led by Genaro Valenzuela. From Southern California, Mexican immigrants and preachers shared the Apostolic message and began churches as they followed the harvests throughout northern California, northern Baja California, northern Sonora, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Twenty-five California churches of Mexican immigrants celebrated a first General Convention in 1925 in which Francisco Llorente was elected the first Bishop President. The 1929 fifth General Convention elected Antonio Castañeda Nava as the Bishop President, and he incorporated the “Apostolic Assembly of the Faith in Christ Jesus” with the State of California in 1930. The Apostolic Assembly sponsored Felipe Rivas in 1933, who organized the Apostolic Church in Mexico. Apostolic congregations in Texas led by Benjamín Cantú joined the Apostolic Assembly in 1937. In 1948 the Apostolic Assembly sent its first missionary, Leonardo Sepúlveda, who established the Apostolic Church of Guatemala, the Apostolic Church of El Salvador, and the Apostolic Assembly in Argentina.

BISHOP JOHN FORTINO President

B

orn on January 4, 1960 in Buenos Aires, Argentina to Italian immigrants, he heard and unreservedly obeyed the apostolic message in his youth, overcoming his family’s religious opposition. He was filled with the Holy Spirit at thirteen years of age on January 15, 1973 and would be baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ seven days later by Apostolic Argentine pioneer Wuckola Jactzuc. He is the first President that emerges from the missionary field, which fuels his characteristic passion for missions and church planting. Immigrating to the United States in the early eighties to study at Fuller Theological Seminary, he was called to be a National Evangelist in 1981 by then Secretary of National Missions, Bishop Roberto Ramirez. The Lord used him powerfully in revivals throughout the nation.

As a minister, he helped in the Apostolic Assembly’s development in Washington D.C. in 1987, the Lord called him to plant “Fountain of Life” Apostolic Church in Miami, Florida. After thirty-four years, he continues to shepherd this large, flourishing and multicultural church of more than 600 members. His trailblazing leadership was demonstrated when he was elected Bishop Supervisor in 1997 to reestablish the Florida District. He served in this position for two years. Over time, Fountain of Life church has sent out 18 local ministers to plant several new congregations in Florida and four States in the US. Near the dawn of the new millennium, the 1998 General Convention elected him as Secretary of National Missions where he spearheaded for eight years the planting of churches all throughout the East Coast and the Heartland of our nation. He is a prolific author of twelve books, which include “The Life of the Redeemer” and “The Spiritual World”. In the 2010 General Convention, he was elected Bishop Vice President and he was the School of Pastors founding director. In May of 2013, after the resignation of the President, he assumed the role of President of the Apostolic Assembly. After 18 months of intense work and dedication to maintain the church, the 2014 General Convention elected him by overwhelming vote the eleventh Bishop President of the Apostolic Assembly. In 2018, Bishop Fortino was reelected as Bishop President. He obtained a Doctorates of Ministry (D. Min.) degree from Knox Theological Seminary (Fort Lauderdale, Florida) in May 2013. The Bishop President and his wife Sara live in Miami, Florida with sister Sara’s mother, sister Elsa. They have three daughters, Veronica, Valerie and Deborah, one son in law John, married to Valerie, and a beautiful granddaughter Valentina.
