Site Character

Moulsecoomb is a suburban area that consists of terraces, small houses of 2 or 3 floors scattered all over the hill, made out of red bricks, with generous front and back gardens. But lately, a gradual act of new blocks is getting risen (left side of the drawing), which begin to threaten the ‘villagy’ character of the area. Tall concrete and steel constructions start to overweight the continuous lines of small houses.

It becomes evident that the area is slowly transformed from a suburban status to an urban one, through the demolition of the existing buildings and the construction of taller ones. With this way, the city council tries to achieve a higher density by sacrificing the history and the cohesion of the site. Is there a way of making good use of the ground plan and come up with a proposal, which preserves the character of the area while increases the density?

Site Experimentation The first part of the design process was the experimentation with different housing typologies and masses of existing, wellknown buildings or complexes of buildings on Lewes Road. Through this exercise of laying out and re-adjusting various strategies and volumes of mass, we can understand the site’s needs and opportunities

by researching where the examples communicate well with the existing or where the relationships can be problematic. Therefore, we analyse the site and create a library of spatial strategies that will later comprise the design proposal.

Manifesto: The Skyscraper is one of humankind’s highest accomplishments. Whatever used to be horizontal now is vertical. However, is the human mind ready for such a transition?

The answer is probably we cannot. However, as the saying goes ‘If the mountain will not come to Mohammed, Mohammed must go to the mountain’. We need to bring those spatial sequences to the upper floors. We need to abolish the claustrophobic anonymity from our constructions. We need to create a humane environment with identity above the ground floor. We must shift the ground 90o.

The proposal applies strategic positioning of elevators on specific levels and parts - sides to enforce the exploration of the social spaces. The strategy focuses on the act of movement and tries to predispose the occupant - viewer to walk through the building rather than get secluded and lie still in a moving box.

The following drawings illustrate a spatial analysis exercise based on my personal experience of the narrative of approaching home. The story is different for everyone, but the route has some characteristics - rituals that identify with the feeling of home.

For selecting the place (my home back in Stylida, Greece), I ‘went’ back to my teenage years. Before picking up my pencil, I tried to analyze my usual journey. The feeling of getting home is not momentary; it is a process. So, I tried to break it down into smaller scenes. It begins from approaching the main street, where I gazed at the mountains (while walking), which were vanishing over the horizon. After a couple of steps, I could see the red, broken down car (which has been there for years, abandoned by its owner), the lined-up cypresses, to passing the front gate. Then take a shortcut from the garden, hunch to avoid the banana tree’s long leaves, and enter the big porch, where I always leave my bag and wipe my shoes after an exhausting day. Following, I pass the final threshold (front door) and reach the big relaxing sofa from where I can play video games to take a nap. I produced the following drawings by combining these specific details of this daily routine with different drawing techniques. 16 I Route To My Home
