EU APPAREL IMPORT TRADE DATA January to December 2017

2017: Amidst challenges, EU to strengthen its apparel imports J a n u a r y t o D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 7 *

Introduction The year 2017 was no one than a shaky one for the European Union. All through the year, the clothing sector of the Union trembled badly because of the impact of global economic challenges, BREXIT (which will take place on 29th March 2019), unstable currency and closure of clothing retail stores. However, despite these challenges, apparel imports by the European Union are likely to remain in positive territory by the end of 2017 with a very marginal change in the UVR on year-on-year basis. The volume of apparel will be upped by 0.70% in January to December period as compared to the same period in 2016. China and India will lose the share in apparel exports to EU, whereas Bangladesh will be the gainer in both volume and value as per the projection of our data analysis team.

Analysis • Import by EU – The cumulative apparel import data of the EU will rise until the end of 2017 as per the projection. The country might note a 0.69% rise in volume terms during the January to December 2017. The second largest apparel importer in the world is likely to import 4704.78 million kg of apparels during the review period as against 4672.33 million kg in the prior-year period. Further, the Union will also surge by 0.79% in value terms on the Y-o-Y basis. The UVR for the said period is predicted to be Euro 17.34 as against Euro 17.33 in the same period last year.

• Export from China – China will continue to be the top apparel exporter to the EU during 2017. However, as per the available data from January to September period, China noted a drop in volume of exports by 0.14%. On the other hand, the country dropped the unit prices of apparel to stay competitive in the global market. China will keep declining in volume-wise apparel exports to the EU for remaining three months of the year too. Our prediction indicates, by December 2017, China will export apparels to the EU worth Euro 27.44 billion with a drop of 0.95% on Y-o-Y basis.

• Export from Bangladesh – All through 2017 Bangladesh’ apparel exporters faced the challenges such as the fluctuation in the currency value (appreciation of Taka against US dollar), longer shipping time, rise in production cost and safety issues which pushed the country towards the declining trend in its strongest market: USA. However, in EU, the country is all set to export apparels worth Euro 15.23 billion with a hike of 2.49% on Y-o-Y basis in the review period.

• Export from India – Lack of any FTA with EU is hurting India’s apparel exports to the region. Even in 2017, India is projected to note a decline in value by 1.53% with export value of Euro 5.05 billion as against Euro 5.13 billion in 2016. The volume from India will also see declining trend by the end of 2017.

• Export from Vietnam – Vietnam is touching new heights in its apparel exports to the EU as the country is set to clock Euro 3.10 billion (up 3.53%) from its apparel exports in the year 2017 ending 31st December.
