Fringe Worthy
With the apparent boom in boomerang videos and stop-motions, the fashion world has signed up for a visual treat by experimenting with this burgeoning movement. No newcomer to the ramps, fringe saw itself being favoured yet again on international runways across product categories. Beaded, embellished or simple presented in a variety of coloured yarns, nothing moves as effortlessly as fringes do. Tiered, layered or edged over hemlines, the season saw a wide set of concoctions over dresses, jackets, denims, sleeves and even accessories.

Pocket Friendly Utility and comfort are two key themes across genres, ranging from lifestyle, technology, home, dĂŠcor to even fashion. Products that suit and match an overdemanding lifestyle led by people today, come to the fore, translated via hardware and details serving multiple purposes. Pockets emerged as a deďŹ ning element in design for Spring/Summer 2018, with designers and high fashion brands presenting oversized versions over shirts, dresses, tees, across and over pants, jeans, coats and jackets.

Asymmetrical Treats After a spell of boxy cuts and silhouettes, it seems that asymmetry is back in fashion. Previous seasons’ obsession was to show off the décolletage with styles such as off- theshoulder, single exposed shoulders and cold shoulders. Brands and high fashion labels alike have now tried to mix things up a bit this time around and have re- introduced the tried and tested element of asymmetrical detailing to the collections. The focus has been on hemlines – skewed and handkerchief hems and a diagonal angle on sleeves, necklines, layers, gathers, shoulders and slits that are observed over dresses, skirts and even tops!

Pleats Please Pleated details went on to enjoy a strong moment of fashion this season, with an umpteen number of designers exploring the technique for their Spring 2018 collection offerings. Variations in width were the main distinguishing factors wherein box pleating, plisse pleating and knife pleating came in a plethora of design options to marvel at. The favourite garment choice to exercise this trend came in the form of skirts – midiskirts and miniskirts either layered upon trousers or worn individually, and oor grazing options.

Ruching Rouge Drawstrings and gathered details seemed to pronounce curves this season with the technique showing up in numerous shows. If we are to somewhat connect this occurrence with the settling down of the athleisure craze, we can easily relate this to the parachute style ruching that was everywhere for Spring 2017. It appears that the trend does not limit itself to sportsluxe categories but also extends out to evening and partywear with body hugging garments making a strong case in point. Windcheater jackets and oversized hoodies were other top contenders that cropped up.

Squared Exposure Attention to the décolletage does not stop at the asymmetrical treatment given to garments for the approaching season – in fact, exposing one’s collarbone seems to be the fashion fraternity’s latest crush crusade. Bidding a strong farewell to sweetheart and plunging necklines, recent showcases saw a new linear shape coming to the fore – the square- shaped neck. Drawing inspiration back to the Renaissance period, squar-ish cut-outs made a strong case for the Spring 2018 season.

Straps of Fancy Embellishments take centre stage at any given show, in any given season, and usually have a strong linkage to dreamy dresses and gowns. This season though, the attention went straight to the shoulder and neckline with designers presenting a plethora of embellished details over straps! Adornments such as beading, rhinestones, man-made diamonds, pearls and more edgier details such as metallic studs and linked chains accentuated dresses, tops, gowns and busters alike.

Ruffle Romance A heady dose of romanticism was in order with designers refusing to give up their fascination with ruffles just yet. Ruffles and frills serenaded the runways over floor grazing gowns and cocktail numbers, as well as packed a flirty punch over flouncy tulles and tiered chiffons. Silk dresses, paired with the frivolity of this detail, invoked femininity and at the sam e tim e, added an ounce of character to otherwise drab silhouettes and forms.
