THE

TREND RO UND UP SPRING/SUMMER 2018

The sweet taste of nostalgia beckons as designers and high-fashion labels alike take to expressing their love and empathy through the most mass-appealing area of all time – Fashion. Frisky sequins, tassels, feathers and fringes, whimsical sheer and tulle, slinky materials like satin and high-gloss plastics – all seemed to deviate our concentrated attention towards the solemn state of affairs in the world. The spirit of protest was accompanied by a strong sense of times reminiscent of the past – the past that always looks better than it actually was. And even in our present day scenario, it's safe to say that the past actually was the saviour. Fierce individualistic references surrounding issues of societal concern came as blaring slogans and messages over garments that demanded a right to inclusivity, individuality, equality and basic human rights. Fashion is cyclical; so it is no surprise here that we observed a few yesteryear darlings making a comeback. Brands continuously strive to present fresh perspectives to timeproven aesthetics, so the revival of shorts and the satin slip were happily welcomed.

An unsettling factor here though, is the sudden crush surrounding plastics as a covetable material. In an age where environmental and sustainable concerns loom large over the heads of the youth today, how safely can you bet on a man-made material known to suffocate the life out of our planet? With the fashion weeks coinciding with the alarming hurricanes and earthquakes sweeping over American soil, is this something we should actually be celebrating and promoting? A question, for all of us to reflect upon and an idea that the makers of fashion really need to reconsider. Fashion is not just an art, a necessity and/or a business – it is a social responsibility and one wrong shot has the power to set into motion, a complicated turn of events, answerable for generations to come. Filing away the seriousness for the logical mind to ponder over, we have carved out the Top 10 trends from the international showcases of Spring/Summer 2018, set to affect the future of fashion. Hoping it’s a safe one – as safe as we imagine our past to be!

Lilac Dreams Millennial pink takes on a moodier mood with lilac emerging as the next big colo ur crush for Spring/Summer 2018. The lig ht purple hue seemed to surpass as a com monality between colour palettes at the international showcases this season. No longer considered a demure, dainty, roma nticized colour, lilac is being treated in an edgier manner. Owing to its detail s and silhouettes, it is being opted for S/S’18. To make it appealing universally, design ers have come up with an option for ever y skin tone – ranging from light mauves to medium lavenders to bold violets.

Slinky Satin A multi-sensory experience was brou ght to the fore by the uid nature and softness of texture possessed b y the satin fabric. The sheeny-shiny materials, went th rough an upheaval with a myriad of textural and ornamentation techniqu es. Trimmed with crystals, dotted w ith subdued sequins, and made edgie r with the implementation of patchw ork, the associations of boudoir wi th satin has taken a backseat and m ade it more wearable as jackets, bo mbers, coats, slip dresses and even pants!

Fantastic Plastic The vinyl hangover from Fall’17 contin ues to grow strong with staples such as trenches, jackets and coats gettin g the clear and high-shine treatment for Spring/Summer 2018. PVC and plast ics materials signal the dawn of a ma n-made future set up against a sustai nable dream – still not sure how this ďŹ ts together, but it seems that clari ty is a prevalent theme across genres . Trenches, capes, dresses, trousers an d coordinates, sometimes clear, and a t times dipped in popping bright, pro ved to be one of the trends designers unanimously agreed upon.

Ice-Cream Parlour Ice-cream tones were set in motion for the approaching warmer months with a s ofter approach towards colour. A very evident pastel palette ensued with lay ers upon layers of sorbet hues surfaci ng in multiple designer showcases. The idea is very simple – mimic a trip le scoop ice-cream of your favourite  avour by piling up garments in sorbet hues to match. Off-kilter shades might be a rebellious way to further keep th e romance of millennial pink alive, bu t whatever the reason, these tones hav e marked a space for themselves come Spring.

Print Mayhem With a wide gamut of cultural identiti es, racial and ethnic characteristics and gender preferences coming to the f ore, it is no wonder then that the sam e is being reected within designer co llections internationally. This season, fashion did not shy away from bold, in-your-face pattern play, but instead went ahead to mash up a se ries of prints and motifs atop one ano ther to create a collage effect. Flora ls placed against polkas, leopard prin ts mixed with tropical blooms or patte rned knits setting of a nostalgic vibe – their pr int menu was elaborate and endless.

Sequin Soiree We found ourselves in a fairy tale of sorts with a heavy dose of sparkle and shine surrounding us during the Spring /Summer 2018 previews. A slew of evening-ready looks, from gl ittery gowns and embellished sleeves t o mini dresses submerged in crystals, took over the fashion week minus the c oyness. Monochromatic sequined suits m ade a case in point for the more formal, business look while sequined o uterwear pieces mixed amidst textures and prints brought about an eccentric vibe, ensuring that no category is lef t untouched by the glitterati in-charg e.

Japanese Affair As the boundaries between cultures contin ue to blur, designers tend to their longkept fascination with other worldly desig n ethos. This season, a signi ficant amount of desig ners referenced details from the far flung Eastern horizon giving a conventional twi st to modern day silhouettes. Oriental influences sprouted up in mandari n collars, kimono style dresses and jacke ts, and Japanese print motifs over lush fabrics. A colour palette of opulent gree ns, reds and gold in floor-grazing gowns b elted at the waist further transported us to the Land Where The Sun Rises.

Sheer Genius Sheer and semi-sheer garments continu e to make a cut for the approaching S pring/Summer season with a variation in the way the materials have been ch osen and approached. Barely-there, diaphanous dresses feat uring chic cuts that entitled a lot o f skin-revealing, and layers upon lay ers of embroidered tulle, invoked a f eminine, romantic vibe; whilst see-th rough trenches and jackets, along wit h clear shoes and bags presented a re ady market for everyday wear. It is t o be noticed that opacity is the curr ent name of the game.

Rain or Shine

With the revival of the ’90s at its peak , designers presented an umpteen number of nostalgic concoctions for the very v ulnerable millennial audience to grasp. In recent times, there has been a colle ctive shift towards functionality and utility, which has observed a keen numb er of takers in the retail-scape. The w ater- proof, wind-shielding windcheater or anorak jacket is one such piece that seemed to garner a more grammable prese nce than its contenders. Making it appe al to a diverse taste palette was not a daunting task, as designers balanced ou t casual and sportier versions with dre ssier ones.

The Long and Short of it As hemlines continue to observe an up ward spiral (in terms of length), sho rts throw a massive comeback with a r enewed perspective. Donning a formal code, shorts have ta ken an extremely ‘work appropriate’ ro ute by being paired with suit jackets /blazers. We saw versions in leather, satin and lace compete against athlei sure variants for a sportier look. It has to be said that fashion indeed is cyclical, but this season, the most s urprising return has been that of the (cycling) shorts.
