And the Walls Come Tumbling Down...

The west facing wall of a building on East Monroe Street, south of the Monroe County Courthouse, collapsed Sunday afternoon, December 14. Most of the rest of the wall came down on Monday, December 15. Work is continuing on the removal of the buildings on Monroe Street where the wall collapsed and two buildings have to be taken down to the ground.

4-H and FFA work hand in hand According to Eager Beaver’s 4-H Club leader Laura Long, “The Monroe County Eager Beaver 4-H Club has planned to do some landscaping at the Paris R-II School District for some time now,” said Long.

“Last Friday and Saturday, with weather permitting the group was able to fulfill this wish.”

Tony Francis and Josh Bondy lead the charge by preparing the beds and laying the landscape fiber on Friday.

Then, on Saturday the 4-H group planned to do the planting and mulching in preparation for Baccalaureate and then Sunday, May 17 graduation.

The competition day is always exciting. There are five events and Madison placed in three of them. They took 1st place in two person hose coupling with Chase Barnes and Johnathan Wolfe. In replace a section of hose, they took 3rd place with Chad Wolfe,

Johnathan Wolfe, Chase Barnes, and Christina Love. For the bucket brigade, it was second place with Chad Wolfe, Johnathan Wolfe, Chase Barnes, Christina Love, and James Freels. It was at the banquet that the team found out they took first overall. They now have their name on the Competition Bell five times for their overall wins.

Superstar... On Saturday Night Live they had a character played by Molly Shannon - Mary Katherine Gallagher. Mary Katherine is a caricature of an unpopular, teen Catholic school girl. She is prone to comically severe mood swings, alternately hyper-active and ponderous. She suffered from stage fright, but was also hyper-competitive and egomaniacal, believing she was a “superstar”.

When ever I see a clip on You Tube from the show I immediately think of her throwing her arms in the air and yelling - superstar!

Here in Paris we have what I consider our own superstar. He would hate to be identified that way because he is a very modest and quiet individual.

Lately he has been in the forefront of - dare I say - everything!

If he does something he does it well.

If it is FBLA, he helps lead the way with the group’s other seniors and helps the new FBLA teacher, Ally Moreland, have a very successful first year.

He even advanced to the National Convention in Chicago later this year.

If he is on the golf course he is playing his way to the state finals.

When participating with his Quiz Bowl teammates he is helping the team play in the state tournament and receiving state team honors.

He is an officer, a member and a guiding light to many club members.

Did he do this on his own? Of course not.

This mild mannered and ultra polite young man is a product of his environment.

He is a unique individual who looks at life like a buf-

fet table - he takes the parts of it he wants and leaves the unwanted items in there place. This helps make him the successful and driven individual he is.

He is an amalgam of the Paris community.

He was guided, instructed and supported by his wonderful and loving parents; he was molded and helped by his teachers, educators, staff and institutional leaders. He was nurtured by religious practices and church leaders; and he was influenced by friends and other family members.

He is a good friend, a hard worker, a proud son, a dedicated student and a driven competitor.

When there is something to be done - he steps up and helps or takes the reins in completing tasks.

No one grows up in a vacuum. There are numerous people, activities, events, friends, mentors and family members that help mold us into the individuals we become.

Sometimes it is something as simple as a smile or a wave that can change a person’s day from gloomy to positive.

Everyone are examples, role models and helpers to all. Try it!

So to end it is fitting for me to say...

A Serious After Graduation Thought

For the seniors in our lives this is usually a busy and exciting time of year.

No, not the seniors I have lunch with at the Senior Center, I mean the kids about to graduate from high school. They have been the big shots at school all year and had a nice prom and are getting ready for graduation. As I am invited to the graduation and/or the parties after, I have very mixed feelings about how things will turn out for many of these young men and women. On one hand I am very proud of the many bright and hard working kids that I have known for some years along with others that have come to the area fairly recently.

They all remind me of the days in which hard work and determination were the keys to success and the chance to live comfortably and support a family. For many reasons there is no present likelihood that these same qualities will result in job opportunities and an even lesser chance that a degree from a well known university is an automatic pass to a good job. It is also at least very possible that our kids will

earn less than we do or will return home to live with mom and dad to save money.

It is time now to consider not just what young men and women might want to spend time working at but also the demand for those services and the openings that currently exist in those fields. There are some serious reports on virtual colleges and on live studies that are very expensive and not so good at resulting in decent employment. Future education and training should be carefully examined and valued. The student debt of a Missouri college education is just short of $30,000 for an undergraduate degree. For those that want to stay on at the family farm business, the price of an acre of good farm land or a large piece of farm equipment is pretty daunting for the new farmer. The next step will not be easy or sure. Of course we will all help where we can, when we can because they are our kids and our country’s future. But they should know it won’t be easy and why we think so.

90 Years May 22, 1925 Two fleeces of wool sold by the Brayton boys to Logan Ensor and Lewis Curtright this week weighed 42 pounds an average of 21 pounds each.

Miss Goldie and Sylvia Jones carried off the scholastic honors in the graduating class at Holliday this year, the former being valedictorian and the latter salutatorian. Each made an average of E minus for the four years.

The local Izaak Walton league received 21 cans of black bass, 400 to the can, Wednesday. They were distributed among the streams of the county, some being placed in large ponds.

George Jackson, Holliday merchant, installed a meat department with a showcase refrigerator in his store some three weeks ago.

Miss Nannie Gwynn has been employed to teach in Adair county near Kirksville, for next term, at a salary of $100 a month.

Just as the Appeal was about to award the blue ribbon spring chicken prize to Mrs. Verne Jones near Holliday, who had hatched 2,385 chickens this spring and had 1,400 more on the way, Mrs. Del Jarboe, over near North Fork, forged to the front and took the lead. Up to Monday, Mrs. Jarboe had taken off 4,870 baby chicks, of which she had sold all but 475. In addition to all these Mrs. Jarboe has 1,000 eggs that will hatch during the next ten days, all of which are under contract.

75 Years May 16, 1940 A branch of an international organization, the Rotary Club, was organized at Paris, Monday, with 16 members and the following officers: H.J. Blanton, president; Charles L. Dry, vice president; Prof. Dan Watts, secretary; M.J. Heathman, treasurer.

The Rev. William Jackson Jarman will be installed as pastor of the Paris Christian Church, Sunday, June 2.

Several Paris firms received small allotments of Nylon hose, Wednesday, the sort that are being made from a combination of coal, water and air.

Turner L. Parrish, near Strother, is announced this week for sheriff. Mr. Parrish is a practical farmer, a man whose industry and qualities as a citizen have made friends in both his own community and in the county at large.

Judy Garland, famous young motion picture actress who starred in “The Wizard of Oz” sent a basket of roses to the Junior class of the Paris high school, together with a personally autographed picture last week when the Paris Junior class took the theme for its annual Junior-Senior Banquet from the famous picture. The roses occupied a place of honor at the banquet Friday evening.

of Granville, are planting what will be Monroe County’s largest garden. It will be 10 acres in extent.

On four acres 2,724 tomato plants are being set.

Mrs. Tilden Whitecotton, north of Santa Fe has been elected to teach the Orwood School, in Ralls County, at a salary of $90 per month.

The job of paving Paris streets with concrete began at the Rose White corner Wednesday morning.

The men are working towards the Jim Young corner, one block to the east.

Manager Moss Major will have the Senior class of the Paris High School as guests at the Mainstreet Theatre after commencement exercises, Thursday night.

The Paris High School Bank will play at the Starkfor-Senator rally in Mexico, Saturday.

Mrs. J.R. Young of Goss is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Hawkins and family.

Ruth Harris has been selected as valedictorian of the Senior class, Virginia Hawkins as salutatorian.

A kitchen shower in honor of Mr. and Mrs. W.E. Howe, whose household goods were recently destroyed by fire, was held Friday evening in the basement of the church.

Stuart Bassett has let the contract for construction of his very modern residence to Roy Huffman.

Construction will begin about June 1. The house will be on the lot just across the street from the Harry Miers residence on South Washington.

50 Years May 20, 1965 Lucien Barkley, formerly of Paris, brother of James Barkley of Paris, was recently promoted to the rank of Commander at Washington D.C. This is equivalent to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army.

Two modern restrooms will be added this year, probably not until fall, to the Mark Twain State Park at Florida, the state park board announces. One building will be south of the overnight camping area in the north part of the park and will contain both showers and restrooms for men and women. It is to be high enough on the hillside to be above water when Joanna forms.

A son, Timothy Alan, weighing 7 pounds, was born at 11:47 Tuesday at Woodland Hospital to Mr. and Mrs. Dale VanHuss of Paris.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Gentry of south of Florida have bought the house on Bodine Street belonging to Mrs. Ladell Gwyn. It is occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Hollingsworth and family, who have rented one side of the duplex on West Caldwell Street, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Russell Powers.

30 Years May 16, 1985 Funds to repair the Monroe County Legion Hall are nearing the $2,000 mark after last weekend’s fund raising luncheon and donations to the local organization.

Imogene Newbrough was recently honored by the CTA and school board for 29 years of teaching in the sixth grade at Paris.

The CTA presented her with a glass school bell, and the school board gave her a brass bell. Newbrough has been a teacher for a total of 37 years.

40th District Representative Capitol Report

This coming week is the last of the 2015 legislative session for Missouri’s 98th General Assembly. It’s hard to believe it is already May, but time does fly when keeping so busy. This week will be no exception. The House will begin work on the floor at 2:00 pm on Monday and adjourn for the year at 6:00 pm on Friday. The legislature will be considering and voting on many bills that originated in the House, Senate, and conference committee. There will be a lot of discussion before these last pieces of legislation are truly agreed upon and passed.

Missouri’s Economy Continues to Grow The state received good news this week as the latest economic numbers show Missouri’s revenues continue to increase at a rate faster than anticipated. To date, revenues have grown by 7.7 percent compared to last year.

The number represents a considerable increase over what the governor had predicted, and based his budget on, with a 4.6 percent growth estimate The additional dollars prompted the governor to release some of the withheld funds he had kept back as he claimed revenues were insufficient to fund all of the items in the budget. Already the state has paid back $400 million it had borrowed from the state’s reserve fund. In addition, this week the governor released another $67 million in withheld funding. These dollars will go to building projects on college campuses around the state, college scholarship programs, transportation funding for K-12 schools, and several other vital programs.

Even with the significant uptick in state revenues, the governor continues to withhold approximately $269 million in funding for the Fiscal Year 2015 budget, which ends June 30.

General Assembly Overrides Governor’s Veto of Welfare Reform Bill (SB 24) The members of the Missouri House and Senate worked together this week to override the governor’s veto of legislation meant to reform Missouri’s system of welfare so that it does a better job of moving folks out of poverty and toward self-sufficiency. The override motion cleared the House by a vote of 113-42 and the Senate by a vote of 25-9.

The legislation will lower the lifetime benefits for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families recipients to 45 months from the current limit of 60 months. In addition, it will add Missouri to the list of 37 other states that require welfare recipients to take immediate steps to seek employment in order to receive benefits. The legislation then takes the savings generated by the reforms and invests them in child care, education, transportation and job training assistance for participants in the TANF program.

The bill is now set to become law on August 28, but most of the provisions in the bill will not take effect until January 1, 2016.

Missouri House Gives Final Approval to Municipal Court Reform Bill (SB 5) Another bill on its way to the governor’s desk would protect Missourians from some municipalities that have exhibited predatory practices to raise revenue through excessive traffic tickets. The bill approved by the House and Senate is designed to shut down “speed traps” by limiting the amount of revenue municipalities can generate from traffic violations.

The plan that is now just a signature from the governor away from becoming law would limit the amount of revenue municipalities can generate from traffic tickets to 20 percent, which is down from the current limit of 30 percent. The bill further limits municipalities in St. Louis County, which has been plagued by excessive traffic violations, so that only 12.5 percent of their total revenue can be derived from traffic tickets.

NECAC touts home ownership programs

Debbie Smith is one of the people determined to help reverse a trend toward fewer homeowners.

Smith is Home Ownership Director at the not-for-profit North East Community Action Corporation (NECAC), a 12-county area social service, community health and public housing agency headquartered in Bowling Green.

The agency is touting several remedies in the wake of a new report that shows home ownership rates across the nation have fallen to the lowest level in more than two decades.

“Buying a home can be a complicated experience, but we can help ease families and individuals through the process,” Smith said. “Even if you don’t qualify for one of our programs, we can still offer guidance that will be invaluable.”

The Census Bureau said April 28 that entrylevel buyers are having trouble saving for a home purchase as prices outgrow wage increases.

Mortgage lending also remains tight.

The number of Americans who owned their homes dropped for the first three months of 2015 compared with the final three months of last year.

The rate was the lowest since 1993.

NECAC offers options

such as down payment assistance, loan modification, low-interest loan programs and counseling before and after the purchase. Each year, the agency puts up to 70 families on the road to home owner. Meanwhile, one positive side to the Census Bureau report was that as home ownership falls, demand for rental housing has boomed. The government said the vacancy rate for rental units nationally fell to 7.1 percent for the first quarter of 2015 from 8.3 percent for the same period last year – the lowest first quarter rate since 1986.

NECAC works with its affordable housing partners to develop senior and family apartment complexes. Since 1997, the agency has been a partner in the construction, renovation, management or development of more than 1,200 apartments for the elderly, families and the disabled. The developments represent an investment of more than $65 million in quality affordable housing.

“NECAC makes a lasting impact,” Smith said.

“We open the door to new housing and home ownership opportunities through a variety of innovative programs and cooperative efforts.

Get hooked on free fishing

Get hooked on fishing with the Missouri Department of Conservation’s free Fishing Days June 6 - 7. During Free Fishing Days, anyone may fish in the Show-Me State without having to buy a fishing permit, trout permit, or trout park daily tag. Normal regulations remain in effect, such as limits on size and number of fish an angler may keep. Special permits may still be required at some county, city, or private fishing areas. Remember that trespass laws remain in effect on private property.

Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish, and Free Fishing Days encourages people to sample the state’s abundant fishing opportunities.

Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water, and most of it provides great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with 20 of them being game fish for the state’s more than 1.1 million anglers, For information on Missouri fishing regulations, permit requirements, fish identification, and more, get a copy of MDC’s “2015 Summary of Missouri Fishing Regulations” where permits are sold, at MDC offices and nature centers, and online at mdc.mo.gov/ node/6108.

The Madison C-3 Preschool held their annual Big Wheels Night Thursday, April 17, 2015. Many families from throughout the community were in attendance, totalling over 75 people!

The children experienced the vehicles handson and were able to ask questions as they climbed aboard. The Monroe County Health Department was also in attendance sharing information on health safety, child seat restraints, and how to purchase inexpensive but good quality seats from the Health Department.

The students were able

to see fire trucks, ambulances, a water patrol boat, Monroe County Sheriff ’s Department vehicles, a Madison school bus, a semi-truck, and a tow truck. There was also a race car, an Army vehicle, a pickup truck with a lift kit, a convertible car, and a CAT bobcat. The highlight for ALL ages with the Air Evac helicopter and the water sprayers from the Conservation Department that the children could spray.

We would like to say thank you again to all who brought vehicles for us to enjoy and to everyone in attendance.

Madison C-3 Kindergarten Screening/Registration is scheduled for Thursday, May 14, for children not currently attending Madison C-3 Preschool. Your child must be five years old by July 31, 2015, to be eligible to attend Kindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year. Registration packets may be picked up at the Principal’s office. Heather DeOrnellis received the Olen and Alpha Depew Memorial Scholarship at the 2014-15 annual Student Awards Ceremony held at College of the Ozarks on April 8, 2015.

“Ready, Set Wear It” World Record Day at Mark Twain Lake will usher in National Safe Boating Week, this year May 16-22, 2015. This short event is part of a yearlong effort by the North American Safe Boating Campaign to promote safe and responsible boating, including voluntary wear of life jackets.

“Each year, as many as 500 lives could have been saved if boaters had worn their life jackets,” said Rachel Johnson, executive director of the National Safe Boating Council.

“New life jackets on the market today make it easier than ever for a boater to have fun and stay safe on the water.”

would allow elderly and disabled Missourians to possess more assets and still qualify for Medicaid.

Current law allows an individual to have only $1,000 in assets to qualify for Medicaid assistance. A married couple has an asset limit of $2,000. The bill approved by the House would steadily increase these limits to $5,000 for an individual and $10,000 for a couple by 2020. After that, the limits would continue to increase with the rate of inflation.

The bill received strong bipartisan support on the floor where the sponsor noted that Missouri’s assets limits haven’t changed since 1968. Supporters said the current limits prevent some of Missouri’s most vulnerable citizens from having enough in savings to adequately provide for themselves, or pay for things like emergency car or home repairs.

The bill now appears headed for a conference committee where selected members from the House and Senate will negotiate a final version of the bill.

Senate Picks Up Transportation Bill For Another Round of Debate On Thursday, May 7, the Senate considered an amendment to a piece of House legislation. The amendment included the gas tax increase that has been debated previously and is stuck in the Government Efficiency and Fiscal Oversight Committee. The amendment was debated for most of the day, having hit a filibuster by Sen. Rob Schaaf. It reflects a compromise made in the last round of debate. The compromise changed the amount of the gas tax increase from 2 cents to 1.5 cents per gallon of gasoline, but would raise the diesel tax increase from 2 cents to 3.5 cents. The tax for diesel and gasoline is currently 17 cents; therefore this amendment would increase the diesel tax to 20.5 cents and the gasoline tax to 18.5 cents. It could come up again this week for more debate.

I will put out a final Capitol Report next week or the week after concerning all the bills agreed upon and finally passed. It will also include highlights of all the work done by this year’s 98th General Assembly.

Thank you all for making this a productive session. I have enjoyed getting to hear from so many constituents expressing support and concern. It is always encouraging to see citizens get involved in the process.

Services on Mother’s Day at Holliday Christian Church were held beginning with the prelude by Sally Blakemore, pianist. All were welcomed by Reverend David Holmes; special guests were: Mary Beth Einerson, Kara Wilkerson, Mitch and Kayla Creel and Jeff and Angie Threlkeld.

Happy birthday wishes were for: Michael Blades, Beckett Bollinger and Trinity McMorris. Happy anniversary wishes were for: Darold and Delores Thrasher (4 years) and David and Lysa Holmes (39 years).

The opening hymn, “Faith of Our Mothers”, was followed by pastoral prayer and Gloria Patri.

Prayer concerns were expressed for: Pete Olney, Mike and Julann McLaughlin, Gerald Roberts, Sandy Forbis and Larry Parrott. Safe travels were wished for Sara McMorris as she continues her education with a working/study trip to South Africa this summer. Joys were shared: Kaylee Callison graduated from Linn Tech and will work as a dental assistant. Halli Patrick graduated from Columbia College with her B.S. degree in business administration. Aileen Putnam shared the joy of becoming a great grandmother.

“Great Is Thy Faithfulness” was the prayer hymn sung; pastoral prayer and recital of the Lord’s Prayer followed.

The communion hymn, “Break Thou the Bread of Life”, was sung. During the final verse, elders, Jerry Ragsdale and Guy Callison, went forward to serve.

Serving as deacons were: Gary Wilson and Darold Thrasher. Sharing of communion, offering collection and singing of the doxology closed the communion portion of the service.

“The Value of Mothering” was the morning’s message from Reverend David Holmes. Scripture from Matthew 20:20-23 was referenced. The joys and sorrows of being a mother were highlighted as mothers seek for their children to be part of God’s kingdom and be actively involved in the work of the kingdom. Mothers wish for their children to strive for excellence and to be effective leaders. A mother’s love is the closest example of God’s love – it is shown in sacrifices which are made over and over.

The congregation stood for the closing hymn, “Oh, How I Love Jesus”. Singing was followed by prayer and “The Spirit Song” to close morning worship.

The monthly congregational meeting was called to order by Gary Wilson, Chairman. Minutes of the April meeting were read by Carole Roberts, Secretary. Financial reports were presented by Jane Akers.

Both were approved. Several members were thanked for their contribution in mowing, weeding, trimming, cleaning and completing various repair projects around the church building. Several items of business were discussed and the meeting was then adjourned on motion by Jerry Ragsdale, second by Johnny Ragsdale.

Services begin are held at 9:30 a.m., each week at Holliday Christian Church followed by Bible Study at 10:30 a.m. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Granville Christian Church will worship this Sunday, May 17 at 11 a.m. The title of the Bible story and the sermon is “Special Effects: How we know God is with us,” based on Acts 2. Bring your kids to experience the wind and the fire (safely!).

Each Sunday at Granville church, we get involved in an interactive Bible story so that the children (and adults) will remember it. The adult sermon is linked to the story in such a way that the children will be able to understand parts of it, also. Music is chosen for that theme.

A craft show will be held May 23 at the Madison Community Center to benefit Relay. This is the same day as the all-town garage sale. Crafters, please contact Lacey Shumard for more information. We have cookbooks available, with the proceeds going to Relay for Life. Contact Dale Ann Magruder for those.

We have now sent a total of 185 care packages to servicemen and women in the combat zones since 2002.

Come spend an hour in worship and praise of the One who created you and constantly re-creates you (May 17 and 31, June 7 and 21). Sunday School is held at 10 a.m., every Sunday and communion follows on the weeks when we do not have worship services.

Mass times are Sundays at 10 a.m., On May 10 Mother’s Day a special blessing was given to all the mothers.

Thank you to all teachers for their dedication to the education of our children. Especially for those teachers who volunteer their time to teach the faith to our children. A special collection was taken up for the earth quake victims in Nepal. The funds will go to the Catholic Relief Services to support their efforts to provide emergency relief and recovery to the people of Nepal.

Our Church Secretary Carolyn Talbbot developed recent health issues that required hospitalization. We pray for her healing.

“A Mother’s Day Blessing” was the title of Pastor Kenny Sharp’s sermon with scripture taken from II Kings 4:1-7, “The Widow’s Oil”. The prophet, Elisha, gave blessings to a mother by providing oil for her to sell in order to pay creditors who had threatened to make her two sons slaves. Points from the sermon were 1) The men are the spiritual leaders of the home, but most of the time the women have more faith. 2) She trusted God’s messenger to do what he instructed.

3) As long as the anointing flows, there will always be blessings! We are to walk in the anointing of the oil.

Be a vessel that is continually refillable. Always give your problems to God - He will take care of you! God gives us new grace every morning. Christians don’t get retirement - they get eternity!!

Serving at the Lord’s Table were Dan Sharp, Charlie Horstmeier, Dennis Kendrick, Donnie Wilkerson, Charles Thomas and Jared Kendrick.

In observance of Mother’s Day, Pastor Kenny and Joni asked all of the little children to come forward to help with a gift for each mother. The children were anxious to hand out candles to each mother.

Also, during the morning’s service, Susan Kendrick had the mission team who will be going to Greenville, South Carolina June 7 to assemble in front of the congregation. She then asked for church members to become a prayer partner with each one of them and to start praying for them now in preparation of the trip.

The prayer partners then would wear matching bracelets from now until they return from the trip. Those that did not receive a bracelet are to pray for the whole group.

VBS will be held the week of Memorial Day week, May 25 - 29 from 6 - 8 each night. Everyone is encouraged to invite a friend. Brian Chase will be working on a Nazareth design and needs helpers for that.

Baccalaureate was held Sunday night, May 10th, at the Paris High School for the high school and eighth grade graduates. High school graduates from our congregation this year are Sierra Brown, Kayla Baker, Jake Peak, Noah Holmes, Autumn Taylor, Brooke Rentschler, and Sirena Bell. Eighth grade graduate is Ian Chase. Sierra will be graduating next Saturday, May 16, and everyone is invited to attend a party for her in the church fellowship hall at 5:00 that afternoon. The Paris High School commencement will be next Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. Eighth grade promotion is Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

Many prayer concerns were named during prayer time for friends and family members. Praises and testimonies were also shared with the church family.

Happy Birthday was sung to Sierra Brown. She will be leaving for Haiti with a mission trip the end of this month.

Sunday School is held every Sunday morning at 9:30 a.m., followed by worship service at 10:30 a.m. Bible study is on Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m., (carry in meal at 6 p.m.). The Bible study group has just started the book of Isaiah. Please come and join us at any service.

Several church members thanked the church for paying for their ticket to see the movie “Do You Believe?” over the weekend at the Hawkins Theater in Shelbina. A very thought provoking movie that everyone should see.

Services were held at Madison Christian Church on Sunday, May 10, with 44 members and guests in attendance. Rev. Holmes greeted the congregation and led the announcements. Joys and concerns were expressed before Rev. Holmes led the congregation in prayer, followed by the Lord’s Prayer. The Adult Choir sang a special selection for Mother’s Day. The Paris Presbyterian Church held worship service Sunday May 10. Patti Grimmett led the congregation into worship service with, “Morning Has Broken.”

Pastor John Grimmett read the announcements and asked for prayer concerns and celebrations. He led the congregation in a responsive reading from Proverbs 31.

Pastor John Grimmett led the congregation is a pastoral prayer and The Lords Prayer. The beginning hymn was, “For the Beauty of the Earth.”

Grant VanBoening performed a special music piece, “Lord I’m Ready Now.” Pastor John Grimmett read the scripture reading from Luke 8:1-8. He delivered the message, “A Woman’s Work.” The closing hymn was, “Great Is Thy Faithfulness. “ Patti Grimmett led the congregation out of worship service with, “O Jesus I Have Promised.”

A video was shown about the joy and importance of motherhood.

John Mitchell gave the children’s sermon. He told about a boy who decided that having money was very important. So he did everything for money. He decided to give his Mother a bill for what he had done, i.e., mow the yard, put away clothes, etc. The bill was $8.00.

Soon his mother put $8 on his plate and presented him with a bill - cooking $0, cleaning $0, washing and pressing clothes $0. He realized she did this out of love for him so he returned her $8.00. Many important things in life are free. Jesus gave his life for us out of love for us. Brenda Ensor and Cyndi Rush led children’s church.

Wesley Hammond’s sermon was titled “Signs and Wonders”, from Acts 5:12-16. God is a God of signs and wonders which cannot be explained. They were outside the realm of science. Because of what happened to Ananias and Sapphira the half-hearted believers scattered. However, in v. 14, we are told that “more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to the number.” Many people were brought to the disciples and were healed. God does signs and wonders so people will know Him. We should humble ourselves before God. Our connection with God is through the Holy Spirit. The greatest sign of all was the resurrection of Christ.

JAMES TURNER

1917-2015

James Turner, age 97, of Shelbina, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2015, at Salt River Community Care in Shelbina.

He was born November 21, 1917, in Maud, the son of Elmer and Ella Mae Stevenson Turner. He was married to Edna Easdale. She preceded him in death. On July 6, 1952, he was united in marriage to Lavinia Wilt. She survives.

James is survived by two children, Cheryl Ann Turner and Terry Lynn Turner both of Shelbina; three grandchildren, Michael C. Cleary of Independence, William D. Cleary of Shelbina, and Angelina M. Cleary of Macon; one great-grandson, Franklin James Troy Cleary and one sister, Irma Jean Herron of Paris.

He was preceded in death by his first wife; parents; one sister, Mildred Todd and one grandchild, Joseph W. Cleary.

James was a member of the Shelbina Christian Church. He served his country in the United

States Army during World War II. He enjoyed building things, model tractors and airplanes, Old Thresher Machines, antique cars, doing carpentry and electrical work, reading and watching Western movies.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., on Wednesday, May 13, at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, burial followed in Shelbina Cemetery. Visitation was held at the Funeral Home in Shelbina from 12-2 p.m., on Wednesday.

Memorials may be made to the Donor’s Choice.

Join bird lovers at the Paris Senior Center on Wednesday, May 13, at 2 p.m., for a group discussion on Purple Martins. Learn all there is to know form local resident Tim Troyer. This is Tim’s passion and he has perfected the art of purple martin’s coming back to the nest time and time again.

The Senior Center is striving to start a bird watching and bird photography club meeting at the senior center at least once a month. There will be a topic each month with some planning for day trips and for different guest speakers.

Hancock drives in 4 to lead Coyotes over LaPlata

The Paris Coyotes in recent baseball action defeated LaPlata 12-2 and fell to Canton 10-6.

LaPlata LaPlata scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning but the Coyotes scored the next 12 runs to seal their 12-2 win.

Offensively, Briar Hancock hit 3 of 4 at the plate with a double and drove in 4 runs; Laine Forrest was 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs and a double; Slater Stone had a hit and drove in 3 runs also with a double.

Also adding to the hit column were Brant Francis 2, Tucker Gruber 1, August Hayhurst 1, Kyle Popkes 1. Coyotes with RBIs included Stone 3,

Hancock 4, Francis 1, Jon Turner 1, Forrest 3.

Scoring runs were Stone 1, Jacob Wolfe 2, Francis 3, Gruber 2, Hayhurst 1, Popkes 1, Forrest 3.

Winning pitcher Brant Francis took the mound for the Coyotes pitching a strong 6 innings, surrendering only 2 runs, both earned on 6 hits while striking out 9 and walking 2.

Canton Paris and Canton battled the entire contest until Canton scored a four spot in the seventh to pull out a hard fought 10-6 win over the Coyotes.

Canton scored two unearned runs in the third to lead 4-1 and added single runs in the fourth and fifth to lead 5-1 but Paris answered in the fifth as Tucker Gruber drove in August Hayhurst and Laine Forrest ripped a fast bal into the outfield to plate 2 more and after Collin Crook drove a ball into the outfield grass that scored Laine Forrest and tied the game at 5-5.

In the sixth inning, Slater Stone made an ESPN highlight catch when he reached over the fence and brought a home run ball back for an out. The Coyotes did surrender a run but a terrific 1-2-3 double play (Collin

Crook – Briar Hancock to August Hayhurst) ended the Canton threat.

Unfortunately, Canton added four runs in the seventh to lead 10-5. In the bottom of the frame Laine Forrest went deep downtown for the final 10-6 score.

Laine Forrest had 3 RBIs with a double and a home run going 3 for 4 at the dish and scoring 2 runs. Adding hits were Slater Stone 1, Briar Hancock 1, Tucker Gruber 1, Laine Forest 3, Collin Crook 1.

Adding RBIs besides Forrest were Collin Crook and Slater Stone. Scoring runs were Jacob Wolfe 1, Brant Francis 1, Tucker Gruber 1, August Hayhurst 1, Laine Forrest 2.

Jon Turner took the loss but pitched a complete game allowing the 10 runs (8 earned) on 6 hits striking out 6 and walking 5.

Teddy Ebbesmeyer qualifies for state golf

Paris Coyote Golfer Teddy Ebbesmeyer shot a 92 in sectionals and qualified for the State Golf Tourney to be held in New Bloomfield. Even though the Paris Quiz Bowl team lost their state matches, Ebbesmeyer was selected to the All State Team.
