S
ilver Lining radio show host Maria Walden Sullivan lives by the three words: believe, inspire and hilarious, along with the power of positive thinking and prayer. That mindset translates to her work. The seven-month-old show on the United Intentions Network was inspired by the positive affirmations she would post on social media that received strong feedback, including from her future boss. Founder of United Intentions Tim Ray reached out to Sullivan after seeing some of her online posts. The two paired up and decided to create a show. “On the show, I interview and talk to people who have experienced a significant tragedy and that they have found the silver lining in it along the way or after the experience,” Sullivan said. “These are people who made lemonade out of lemons, and we highlight these people and share their stories with the hope to inspire someone else.” The show is growing in popularity. It airs the last Monday of each month and will soon be on twice a month and on FM radio soon. Each month brings a different theme. Some notable interviews include Don Miguel Ruiz, the author of the book, “The Four Agreements,” Sam Bracken, the author of “My Orange Duffle Bag” and Mary Frances Bowley, founder and executive director of Wellspring Living, an organization fighting childhood sexual abuse and exploitation. The conversational tone of the show allows guests to talk about their experiences while Sullivan asks detailed questions. Then it lightens up, transitioning to a description of how they were able to turn the situation around. 6 | northsidewoman.com | ojanuary2017
From left to right, Jesse Till, Maria Walden Sullivan and Jennifer Kramer.
Sometimes, Sullivan draws from her life for inspiration. Her life has been filled with positive moments from the time she started volunteering at age 10 from nursing homes to bingo halls delivering doughnuts and coffee. As an adult, she worked as a facilitator and national motivational speaker to corporations and inner city youth. She later opened charity consignment stores, Vintage and Vogue and I Do and I’m Done bridal boutiques, in Roswell. Most recently, she featured her son on the show. “I have had some unique experiences of my own, of which I know firsthand, how it feels to have loss or misfortune,” Sullivan said. “Recently, I asked my son to be a guest to discuss living and growing up in a single-parent home. I had been a single parent for the majority of his life.” Instances like this help her show feel genuine
to listeners and give guests a chance to share their experience making lemonade from moldy lemons. “Anyone who can create this type of product in their lemonade stand is a success and I would love to interview,” she said. “My favorite thing overall is that I get to help share stories and be the conduit to opportunities for others to listen and hopefully be inspired in making a difference in their own lives. There is so much negativity in this world, and it’s been great to provide a platform for something positive.” This summer, Sullivan is working with Aurora Day Camp in Dunwoody to help children with cancer. She took the post after her granddaughter was diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis. The program is for children ages 3 1/2 to 16-years-old and their siblings. It’s free to attend. could not be today where I am without sports,” said Centennial High School sophomore Cathryn Gray. Already an accomplished student, Gray keeps busy between Beta Club, student council, chorus and one of her greatest loves: sports. Most recently, her dedication has led her to be named as one of the few 2017 U.S. Paralympics Track and Field High School All-American for both discus and javelin. Along with 70 other athletes across the nation, Gray was recently honored by the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee and Team USA. Now in its eighth year, the list honors the top high school track and field athletes who have a Paralympic-eligible impairment, based on their performances in the 2017 season. “There’s less than 40 female high school athletes in America that received High School All-American status,” said Michael Higgins, Centennial’s track and field coach. “Cathryn was the only one in Georgia.” “The experience in itself is a win,” Gray said. “I feel honored because not only is it great to be recognized for my accomplishments, but I’m able to be a role model for other girls and to show them that they can excel in any sport that they choose and excel in school. I just want to be a good role model for them. And I don’t take that lightly. It’s really important to me.”

Fit and fabulous over 50

Anna Anton helps women achieve their fitness goals By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
S
trength coach and competitive powerlifter Anna Anton knows what perplexes many of her clients who come looking for ways to stay fit after 50. “One of the first things I generally hear is ‘I’ve run all my life and now I have this tire around my middle. What happened?’” she says. For others, it starts with a nudge from their doctor advising them to drop excess pounds, or to build up bone density by lifting weights. The Milton mom of two college-aged sons knows full well the impact of the nature of gravity; she also knows you are never too old to get in optimal shape. Ten years ago, Anton, 54, was involved in a horse-riding accident which led to extended physical therapy, including working out at the gym. There, she discovered the benefits of strength training, incorporating weights into her routine, the importance of bone density and the changes in metabolism as we age. An athlete all her life, and a horse trainer for nearly two decades prior to her injury, Anton knew the same concepts she incorporated into her horse training would work in a new career. “I realized that athletes are athletes…be they two legged or four legged!” says Anton, a native Atlantan who graduated from the University of Georgia. She partnered with long-time coach and powerlifter, Callahan, and began the process of getting the necessary certifications to allow her to start training others. Anton earned her Club Coaching certification with USA Powerlifting (USAPL), as well as her Level 1 Sport Performance certification with USA Weightlifting (USAW). She is both a state and nationally ranked competitive powerlifter in the USAPL Open and

Masters 57 kg division. After years of taking her weight training routines to private facilities and boot camps, Anton and Callahan opened their own gym, Roswell Barbell in Roswell (www.roswellbarbell.com), this past May to bring their strength training and power lifting strategies to a wider client base. Anton laughs that a main motivator to opening her own gym was really to bring her boot camp classes inside and out of the cold. “We started Roswell Barbell because I was getting to the age when teaching boot camp in a church parking lot in the winter was [not appealing],” Anton laughs. Many of her boot camp clients “migrated” with her to Roswell Barbell, and she eventually sold them on the benefits of weight lifting and strength training – a concept new to many of them. Anton explains her training philosophy for women focuses on those interested in building lean muscle and boosting their metabolism – which slows dramatically as we age. “I work with them to make the changes necessary for their bodies to work for them, instead of against them. I tell all of my new people the same two things – ‘We’re all busy...just show up! Make your training a priority, and you’ll see results,’” Anton says. Her typical clients are women in their 50s and 60s, with about half former athletes who would like to return to a more active lifestyle. They work out with Anton two to three times a week, and generally start seeing results within three weeks.
women in business
SO WHERE DO YOU START?
“They probably won’t drop 20 pounds in three weeks, but they’ll start to notice they feel better, have more strength and energy. But the real physical changes come within six months to a year,” she says. Every woman is different, so Anton says she works to find the right combination of training to achieve the desired results. “My clients come in all shapes, sizes and ages [so] I customize training sessions according to their needs,” she says. “It’s not a quick fix. It has to be a process that
you commit to for the long term.” Anton has clients who are in their 70s who get stronger every day and are continually learning new techniques for improvement. “This is a process for the rest of your life,” says Anton, who after 10 years continues to powerlift competitively with a team from Roswell Barbell. “I’m still getting stronger, and smarter, about training. I don’t see an end to this for me.” ■

When designing a plan for a new client, Anna Anton runs through this checklist: 1. Assess current status – age, weight, how long it’s been since the client was at their ideal weight and any known health problems. 2. Identify a reasonable goal – weight loss and/or strength gain? Focus efforts on getting leaner versus losing weight. 3. Take measurements instead of just weight alone. Initial changes will most likely be in inches, not pounds. 4. Design a strength-building and exercise program to meet the goals. Weight lifting can burn calories for 24-48 hours afterward. Not so for cardio. Step off that treadmill, and the calorie loss is done! 5. Discuss eating habits – What’s for breakfast? No more than four hours between meals to keep metabolism going. Protein to carb ratio? Good fats? Remember, fat doesn’t make you fat; carbs make you fat! What time is dinner? Calories after dark count “double!” 6. Remind them this is not a “quick fix” or a fad diet. It’s a lifestyle. 7. Avoid endless miles on the “dread-mill” or deprivation diets. The long-term goal should be to have your metabolism do the work for you.If you build enough muscle, it will! Lifting weights will always be a better bang for your buck than diet and cardio alone. 8. Lift heavy, lift often. Being strong is fun.

Dress For Success-Atlanta By LORI WYNNE Style Contributor
A
new year means a “new” you, and that is exactly what 1,200 formerly homeless or impoverished women in Georgia experienced last year, with the help of the Dress For Success-Atlanta affiliate. The new year will see much growth and the ability to help women and their families break the chain of poverty. DFS provides business attire, free sessions to improve interview skills, job retention and career advice. The nonprofit hosts a business women’s networking group and helps its clients gain overall confidence in their professional and personal lives.
About: According to the website, www.atlanta.dressforsuccess. org, “Dress for Success was founded in New York City in 1997 and is now in 142 cities in 20 countries. Dress for Success Atlanta was incorporated in 1997 and works in partnership with more than 20 Referral Agency Partners.” Their mission is to, “Empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.” Pamela Owunta, director of Dress for SuccessAtlanta since July 2017, is passionate about what the 501 (c) 3 organization does and shared how individuals, corporations, church, service and education groups and community groups can help here in Georgia. “Volunteers are the heart and soul of Dress for Success Atlanta and are needed in every area of our operation,” she said. “We are always looking for dedicated people interested in moving the mission of the organization forward.” DFS provides appropriate job interview attire for women. This includes, clothing, accessories, undergarments, shoes and handbag. After she has attained the job, she will receive up to five work-appropriate outfits to create her “working woman’s wardrobe.” DFS also provides free training sessions for women to help them retain employment. The organization’s website states, “Having completed the crucial first step — securing employment — women in these programs focus on retaining their jobs and developing their professional 10 | northsidewoman.com | january2018
skills. Our goal is to ensure each woman is moving toward meaningful and sustainable careers as well as financial independence.” Dress for Success offers a business networking group for their “suiting” clients. The Professional Women’s Group offers support and education through expert speakers on a variety of topics such as: financial advice, juggling responsibilities, motivation, cooking and stress management.
Donating “We receive 150,000 units of clothing a year,” Owunta said. “We handle the donations with care. Our volunteers inspect, steam and hang the clothing in the boutique. Our main focus is to build confidence in the women we serve.” Suiting clients receive the professional attire for free. The organization also hosts inventory sales two or three times a year. The next one will be in April 2018. The rules for donating clothing to the organization are: • Interview-appropriate suits (within two years old) • Interview-appropriate blouses (within two years old) • Shells • Skirts, pants, and jackets (within two years old) • Shoes: dress, dark colors (black, brown, navy, taupe) • Dresses: work-appropriate (no formal or evening wear) • Dressy-casual outfits (conservative two-piece set) • Jewelry and scarves • Pantyhose: new and unopened • Portfolios to be used for resumes • Handbags (briefcases or work-appropriate handbag) Community clubs or groups can also host a clothing drive and focus on women’s professional wear or just one aspect of the wardrobe such as handbags.
Volunteering “We have a small but mighty staff of two,” Owunta said. “The rest are volunteers. Last year we had 200 and we need more!” You can serve as an individual, corporate group, church group or service club. DFS needs: • Image consultants- you don’t have to be a trendsetter.
DFS needs positive women who love to serve others. Each client receives an hour of time with a volunteer image consultant to help them feel confident in their business ensemble. • Speakers for the monthly Professional Women’s Group meetings. Volunteer speakers can share their expertise with 80-100 professional women who are hungry for knowledge. • Business and career coaches in DFS career center. Your time and energy will help women reach their career goals. If you or your church or business organization are looking to make a difference in the lives of people in our community this year, consider donating your time, expertise, or funds to Dress For Success-Atlanta. DFS-Atlanta’s Wish list for 2018 • New or gently used closed toe shoes with no open heels in women’s sizes 8-12 • New bras in sizes A and B cup • Toiletries, such as toothpaste and shampoo. • More affiliates in northern, southern and mid-Georgia • Donation drop-off sites in North Fulton, DeKalb, Gwinnett and Forsyth counties • Interior designer to revitalize the 4,000-square-foot boutique with paint and build out spaces • Professional organizers to help organize all donations • 10 speakers to speak on a variety of topics at the Professional Women’s Group Leadership Conference on Aug. 18, 2018
Final Tip To help others catch the vision of helping Dress For Success, consider inviting Cynthia Harper, a former client and DFS delegate, to speak to your group or organization. Contact her at cymp_paulette@yahoo.com. She tells a compelling story of loss and accomplishment. ■

PEYTON JAMISON
By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com Northside Man: Peyton Jamison - Financial Planner, Milton City Councilman Hometown: Roswell City of residence: Milton College/Degree: 2004 graduate of Auburn University (finance) Family: Wife Megan; children, Tripp (8) Mallory (6) Holden (3) Community Connections: Jamison is a newly elected member of the Milton City Council, president of the Crabapple Community Association and previously served as the Chairman of the Milton Planning Commission.
How did you choose North Fulton as your home?
I moved to North Fulton when I was 12 and always knew I would be back after college. North Fulton is the best place to raise a family. While I grew up in Roswell, my wife and I became business owners in Milton in 2008. We fell in love with the community so we moved to Milton in 2010 to raise our family. The top schools – both public and private – are certainly a key feature to this area, along with wonderful restaurants, a small-town feel and a top notch parks and recreation program.
What are the growth challenges facing Milton, and have city leaders done a good job balancing development and residential needs?
The majority of Milton does not have access to sewer, which helps keep our density low. We need to continue to build out our commercial corridors (Crabapple and Deerfield) while drawing a line on keeping the density
designated to those areas. Overall, the city has done a good job in balancing the needs. However there have been a handful of rezonings in the past which have extended some density to areas which I believe were unnecessary.
What inspired you to run for the Milton City Council, and what are your priorities?
As chairman of the Planning Commission I was seeing the approval of rezonings and development patterns that I Peyton Jamison with wife, Megan, and children, from left, Mallory, Holden and Tripp. believe needed to change. What do you love most about your job as a financial planner?

The families that run together…

Paige Mack's family volunteers before running the 2017 Peachtree Road Race.
By STEVE HUDSON
Outside Georgia Contributor
I
have a friend who’s a serious athlete. She hikes and climbs and rides mountain bikes – and she runs marathons. “I ran a marathon last weekend,” she will say, like it’s no big deal. Well, yeah. What’s a marathon? It’s 26.2 miles of running. What’s it like to run a marathon? I have no idea, though I wonder sometimes. But what many people wonder is probably more like this: “Can regular people train for and run marathons too?” I asked that very question to two different Alpharetta women who have “managed to marathon” (as someone once put it) while still working full time and being full-time moms too. The short version of their answer? “Yes!” Here’s the long version. Before she began serious running, recalls Alpharetta resident Paige Mack, she would tag along while relatives ran races, pulling her kids in a wagon as she watched the action unfold. But one day she realized she was working as hard pulling that wagon as she would if she was running. “That’s when I said it’s got to be easier to do the race than to just drag the kids along in that wagon!” she says. Paige began looking into training regimens and found what she wanted at runnersworld.com. “I followed a strict five-day-a week training schedule,” she says. “That was good for me because I needed the structure.” It also built confidence that she was training correctly. But sometimes it was difficult to meet that schedule’s demands. “If you can’t adhere to a schedule, you feel guilty,” she says, so she eventually developed a more flexible training schedule of her own. Paige’s first race was in 2005, and her first full marathon was in 2011. She will run her ninth full marathon this January. For Paige, running is a family affair that she enjoys with her three daughters. Jojo, 11, ran her first 5K when just 5 years old and is now on her “fourth or fifth 10K.” Fifteen-year-old Madeline will run her first half marathon in January, and Lydia (just turned 18) has finished three halfmarathons and is registered to do her first full marathon too. Even husband Kyle joins in the family running from time to time, Paige says.

When we go out for long training runs, they are unplugged and they talk. It’s wonderful. It’s really good talking time and not at all like you’re trying to force a discussion. You’re trying to keep from thinking about what hurts, so you talk about everything that’s on your mind.” Paige Mack
Paige and daughter Lydia after finishing the Atlanta Half Marathon this past Thanksgiving day.
Paige enjoys the sense of accomplishment that competing in a marathon brings, but there’s more to it than that. “You know what my favorite thing is about running with the kids?” she says. “When we go out for long training runs, they are unplugged and they talk. It’s wonderful. It’s really good talking time and not at all like you’re trying to force a discussion. You’re trying to keep from thinking about what hurts, so you talk about everything that’s on your mind.” How would Paige advise others who want to get into running? “I’d point them toward a program called ‘Couch to 5K’ (www.c25k. com),” she says. “It’s a good start – and a good restart too,” Paige says. In fact, Paige did it herself after Jojo was born. What’s next? “An ultramarathon,” Paige says, referring to any race longer than the traditional marathon. She adds, “A 50K [about 31 miles] would be my next goal.” Bonnie Luffel is another Alpharetta resident who’s a great fan of marathons. “My husband David runs them,” she says. In fact, David has run the Boston Marathon. “So when I hit age 40, I decided I had to try it too.” Like Paige, Bonnie began with a formal training plan – a 16week plan she found in a book on women’s running. “You start gradually

and build up the miles,” she says. Bonnie’s training incorporated the “Fartlek” approach of blending fast running and slower running, and she pushed herself as hard as she could while still being able to carry on a conversation. “That’s what you aim for – being able to talk to someone while you run,” she says. What’s it like to train for a marathon? Some days, Bonnie says, “I can run forever. But some days I can’t even run a mile.” On those can’t-run-a-mile days, she adds, “It’s important to keep the big picture in mind. That’s when I remind myself that I’m working toward a goal.” For Bonnie, as for many busy women, the hardest thing is simply finding the time. She has been part of a running group through the YMCA, and that helps. But being a mom while working full time as a para-professional at Alpharetta Elementary “does make it harder to find time to train like I’d like to – especially once I start getting into longer distances and start to train for longer runs.” Like Paige, Bonnie enjoys sharing running with her family. She runs with her husband David as well as with her 9-year-old daughter Annabelle. In fact, she adds, Annabelle has topped the one-mile mark. “She’s very interested,” Bonnie says, “and I think she will enjoy it.” Bonnie further shares her enthusiasm for running with students at Alpharetta Elementary through the school’s “You Go Girl” program. There are close to 20 girls involved with that program, and they’re currently training for the school’s Flying 5K race in February. “It’s inspiring to see young people want to get out and run,” she says, “and it’s important to be a role model so the girls will see you and think ‘If she can do it, then someday I can do it too.’ ” Though getting started in marathon running can be intimidating, Bonnie encourages other women to go for it. “When I see new runners starting out, I always encourage them,” she says. “I tell them ‘You’ve got this!’ ” She adds, “Find that good training plan and a supportive run group that will motivate you to get out there. Sure, you’re going to have bad days. But don’t get discouraged. Know that it’s going to get better – and don’t give up! ■

reasons you need a flu shot 1. The flu vaccine is not perfect. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get it
Sure, it’d be nice to have a universal flu vaccine that meant you only had to get a shot once in your life. But until scientists crack that puzzle, it’s better to get the yearly jab than have no protection at all.
2. The flu shot doesn't give you the flu
Far from it. In fact, when you get the flu shot, the vaccine will not make you sick with flu. That’s because it’s made of deactivated flu strains. It doesn’t have the power to give you flu! You can have common symptoms like soreness, redness, tenderness or swelling after vaccination, but they usually don’t last long.
3. You’ll Miss Work, School, and Maybe a Paycheck
No doubt, if you have your choice between getting the flu and going to work or school, you should prefer the latter. Each year, the flu season results in millions of lost work days at a cost of billions of dollars.
4. Medication won’t cure the flu
If you do get the flu, antiviral prescription medications like Tamiflu and Relenza may reduce symptoms, cut down on sick days, and prevent flu complications that could land you in the hospital, but they won’t cure the flu. Also, because we can’t predict how severe or widespread the flu season will be, flu vaccines and antiviral meds could turn out to be scarce.
5. It provides community protection
When you get a flu vaccine, you’re not just protecting yourself — you’re protecting everyone around you. You can unknowingly pass on the flu to your spouse, your children and those vulnerable, like the elderly. source: www.morrishealthmd.com

Picking your battles
Peachtree Park Prep Owner
A
s parents we sometimes use the phrase “You have to pick your battles” as an excuse for letting our children misbehave or not adhere to rules either at school, at home, or with their friends. I know when my boys were young I used this more than once myself! Start the New Year with a new twist on “Picking a Battle”. Normally what happens is that we are already well into a losing “battle” with our child when we say this so that the person watching us will know why we are letting our child have his/her way. Let’s be honest for a moment. We can win EVERY battle if that were the point in one of two ways. We could either patiently and passionately take the time to see the situation through to an appropriate outcome OR we could just say to our child,
“Because I said so”. So assuming it is acceptable to allow our children to win some of our battles, which should they win and which should we stand firm? What game they want to play? What stuffed animal they want to sleep with? Agreed….these are battles that you could easily “back down” and feel comfortable that this is a battle not worth waging. But do you back down on family rules, school rules, society rules? These are not only battles “to pick” but battles “TO WIN”. Instilling in children when they are young that when rules exist they should be followed will save you a lot of angst when they become teenagers and young adults. To quote a retired teacher friend, “If they are telling you what they are going to do at 4, they will eat your lunch at 16!” This is so true it’s scary. So, pick your battles. For your child’s benefit it’s worth the time, the effort, the passion, and the WIN! ■

Going crazy for zoodles
By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
S
earch the term “zoodles,” and instantly more than one million references come up for the funky faux noodles that are taking the culinary world by storm. In a nutshell, zoodles are basically vegetables peeled, grated, “mandolined” into strands that look and feel like pasta noodles. So you CAN have your spaghetti AND eat it too – without carbs or gluten or all those other pesky things that can make some meals a guilty pleasure. The trend started a few years ago when foodies took zucchini and used a variety of kitchen tools to create spiral-shaped zucchini strands. Voila – the zucchini noodle, or the zoodle! Today, an entire cottage industry of zoodle gadgets (referred to as “spiralizers”) has sprung up, allowing chefs to turn essentially any vegetable, and even some fruits, into zoodles. And the recipes quickly followed. Again, Google “zoodle recipes” and you’ll have your choice of thousands of zoodle-themed meals – most with the tag line “The Best of…” attached. Who knew there were so many ways to use vegetable noodles, from scampi, to stir fry, to chicken zoodle soup? And it’s just not boiled and covered in sauce where zoodles shine –
although there are plenty of recipes with lots of combinations beyond tomato sauce and cheese to keep you busy for years. Innovative chefs have turned zoodles into taco shells, “meat” balls, French fries, and many other creative spins on the lowly squash. As the trend in clean eating takes hold, the popularity of zoodlebased meals is gaining ground. The benefits abound – vegan, vegetarian, low-fat, low-sodium, low-calorie, grain-free, and allows you to get your daily dose of vegetables in a tasty way. For people trying to lose weight, zoodles are a great substitute for a pile of pasta noodles. To take in the same calories as one cup of grain-based pasta, you would have to consume five cups of zoodles! And zoodles also are much lower on the glycemic index, a huge plus for people who need help maintaining the right sugar levels. So what can you run through a spiralizer? Basically any fruit or vegetable that does not have a core or pit (sorry peaches), is not hollow (pumpkins need not apply), isn’t squishy (think tomato), and is long enough to produce spirals (bye-bye Brussel sprouts). But just about everything else can be converted into zoodles with the right tool and mindset. For more information on what is best “zoodled” visit http:// inspiralized.com/the-complete-reference-guide-to-spiralizingvegetables/ ■ january2018 | northsidewoman.com | 15

Linda Sands, witty wordsmith, social media queen, keeps the fiction flowing in Forsyth County By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
L
inda Sands, award-winning author and self-proclaimed “kitchen-dancing, bourbonswilling broad,” has shared late-night drinks with fellow mystery writer Janet Evanovich and has done shots with Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Cunningham. But some of her best work – and partying – happens in Forsyth County. When she’s home, that is. A “travel junkie” who has visited over 30 countries and islands, Sands moved from coast to coast and worked a slew of fiction-fueling odd jobs in six states before settling with her family in Alpharetta in 2013. Though “settling” hardly describes Sands, who is also serving as general contractor on a new house in Blue Ridge, she hosts an annual writing retreat at one of her rental properties on the Gulf Coast, is something of a social media queen with a vast web presence, and packs her schedule with writing conferences, book festivals and speaking engagements throughout the year. Recently, she paused long enough to answer a few questions about her craft, and its curious beginnings.
Those sarcastic annual family reports were not only fun to write, but also taught me how to synopsize an entire year into 500 words or less – something every novelist needs to learn. An added bonus was the immediate positive feedback from readers, which made me begin to think I was on to something. Snark sells.

I equate the experience to hanging your underwear on a clothesline in your front lawn for 45 days. When “3 Women Walk Into A Bar” spent 664 hours on the hot and trending list, Kindle Press offered a publishing contract, followed by the sale of print rights to Down & Out Books, and I was reminded that I have an electric dryer.

I’m lucky to know some amazing writers. “Not Waving, Drowning” is based on a true story, like “Simple Intent,” my legal thriller that grew from overhearing an attorney’s conversation at a Pennsylvania cocktail party. But, this time, I was writing about a beloved personality in Savannah. The research took five years. When I told Michael Cunningham over drinks in Key West that the book had been compared to “The Hours,” he bought the next round.

Maybe when I attended a wedding officiated by a Native American chief in full dress, where someone in a gorilla suit passed out cake. But probably it’s the realization that the trucking industry as a subculture is horribly misunderstood. That’s something I hope to change with the Cargo series.

I did the Richard Petty driving experience at the Atlanta Speedway and loved not getting stopped for speeding – for once. I don’t have a lead foot, I just like to drive fast. I’m also shopping a psychological thriller with a satirical slant, “Get Cozy.”

Simple steps to get your pet trim and healthy in the New Year Dr. ERNIE WARD, DVM
Association for Pet Obesity Prevention www.drernieward.com
Vital Veggies
As an alternative to highly-processed store-bought treats, try offering baby carrots, green beans, celery, broccoli, cucumbers, zucchini, sliced apples and bananas or ice cubes. These naturally nutritious tasty tidbits are a healthy option for many dogs. For cats, try a flake of salmon or tuna when you’re feeling generous.
A
ccording to the latest veterinary surveys, over half our nation’s dogs and cats are overweight. This means over 90 million pets are at risk for developing crippling arthritis, debilitating diabetes, catastrophic kidney and heart disease, high blood pressure and many forms of cancer.
Hustle for Health
Here are simple tips to trim excess pounds from your pet and keep them healthy.
Research proves our most powerful partner is daily aerobic activity, and anyone with a dog has a built-in, no-excuse exercise buddy. For dogs, just 20 to 30-minutes of brisk walking is all it takes to reap health benefits. For cats, try playing with a laser pointer, remote-controlled toy or ball of paper for 5 to 15 minutes each day.
Calculate Calories
If you don’t know how many calories your pet needs each day, you don’t know how much you need to feed them. And don’t rely only on feeding guides on pet food; those values are formulated for adult, un-spayed or un-neutered active dogs and cats. For most older, spayed or neutered, indoor “lap potatoes,” you’re probably overfeeding by 20% to 30% too much if you follow the pet food’s instructions. Instead, ask your veterinarian to calculate the proper number of calories your pet needs each day based on breed, age, fitness, and health. Another good starting point is to use this formula: Divide your pet’s weight by 2.2. Multiply this figure times 30. Add 70 and you’ve got a general idea of how many calories you should be feeding a typical inactive, indoor spayed or neutered pet weighing up to 60 pounds.
Measure Meals
The greatest tool in the fight against excess weight is a measuring cup or kitchen scale. Too many pet owners simply fill the bowl or “guesstimate” how much they’re feeding. Even worse, some pets, especially cats, are fed an “all-day buffet” that results from the “just keep the bowl

full” feeding philosophy. My organization, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention, has done studies to show that feeding as few as 10 extra kibbles of food per day can add up to a pound of weight gain per year in indoor cats and small dogs!
Tactical Treating
First off, I’m not “anti-treats,” I am “anti-junk-treats!” If you’re going to give your pets extra goodies, make ‘em count. Too many pet treats are what I call “calorie grenades,” laden with sugar and fat, so choose low-calorie, no-sugar goodies that provide a health benefit. I like single ingredient treats such as sweet potato, salmon, and blueberry bites or functional treats that provide a bonus such as helping to keep teeth clean or promote mobility. Whatever treats you give, be sure to count those additional calories. As few as 30 extra calories per day means your pet gains over three pounds in a year.

Cut Down the Carbs
Most of the pets I treat for don’t need a high-carbohydrate diet. Yet that’s exactly what most of us feed our pets. Many diets contain 60% or more carbohydrates when you analyze the food label. I prefer low-carbohydrate pet food options with a protein source as the first ingredient, especially for cats that need to slim down. As a general rule, I recommend trying a higher-protein/low-carb diet first for weight loss in my patients. It’s the responsibility of each of us to help our pets maintain a healthy weight. By using these seven simple suggestions, you’ll be on your way to your pet’s best – and healthiest – year yet! For additional information, visit www.PetObesityPrevention.org or www.DrErnieWard.com. Are you working like a PRO? By JEANNINE JANNOT, PH.D.
D
o you ever feel like you need more hours in a day? Or experienced that sinking feeling that you’ve accomplished little at the end of a long, exhausting day of running errands and working? These are feelings common to our hectic, fast-paced reality. Personally, it’s waiting that triggers me – time that I JANNOT could use to get something done. I have always considered these pockets of waiting to be a colossal waste of time. Sometimes you can anticipate them as in the case of a doctor’s appointment, but other times they occur unexpectedly. Our lives are filled with examples of these time sucks – sitting in carpool, visiting the DMV, waiting on someone, and travel all have the potential to consume a lot of our precious time. Without giving it much thought, we mostly fill these hijacked times on our smartphones surfing the web and using social media. It’s the ultimate time suck that makes our wait tolerable. But, what if instead of viewing these time sucks as an unwelcomed waste, we view them as pockets of potential productivity. Rather than experiencing this time as a frustrating inconvenience, we can consider these moments to be Productive Response Opportunities (PRO). Embracing a PRO approach requires minimal planning and preparation and will substantially increase your productive output.
Five easy steps to develop your own PRO approach: 1. Identify any potential time sucks in the coming days or weeks. If you keep a calendar or planner, you should be able to identify all the potential upcoming time sucks, specifically, any type of appointments or meetings. If you’re a caregiver, you will want to consider others’ schedules, too. Busy students can find pockets of time waiting in lines, waiting on friends and when plans or classes get cancelled. 2. Identify short-term goals, tasks and work that can be acted on or completed during these PRO times. For me, these are my Action Items. A “to do” list sounds like drudgery, but “action items” elicits my motivation. Common action items on my list include prepping lecture material, research reading, outlining projects, ideas and timelines, calendar planning and email correspondence. For students, with so many apps and online resources available to them, it’s easy to always have a set of flash cards available for reviewing course material. 3. Have your materials at the ready. To take full advantage of any PRO time, you will need to have access to the materials required to make progress on your action item. Using myself as an example, I may need access to a book, my calendar or the internet. And, in many cases I keep a running project folder that is easily portable and keeps everything together. 4. Commit to your PRO work in advance. Resist the urge to take a quick glance at Facebook! This step is key. You need to have your PRO materials available to you AND intend to work on them
when an opportunity presents itself. On the occasions when my time is unexpectedly sucked from me, the first thing I do is get on my phone. Even if my plan is to utilize my PRO, I can easily become derailed by a quick peak at my social media. 5. Acknowledge and be grateful for the time to be productive. When my time has been wasted, I tend to get really frustrated and irritated. The benefit of using the PRO approach is not only more productive output, but also feeling positive about how I used my time to accomplish something important to me.
PRO Tip:
I’ve outlined how to work like a PRO, but you can also think like a PRO. There will be times when we may not have our PRO materials handy or we just don’t feel like doing the work. Rather than mindlessly reaching for our smartphones to pass the time, we can choose to take a PRO approach to reap the benefits of mental solitude. It’s in mental solitude where we think, make meaningful connections and cultivate creative ideas and solutions. No materials necessary! The only requirement is that your thoughts are self-contained and not engaged with external inputs such as listening to a podcast, reading, watching a video or having a conversation with someone. Direct your inner monologue toward problem-solving and contemplation about something important to you. It’s in these opportunities that we gain clarity and inspiration which further help to fuel our productivity. Give the PRO approach a try and see how PROfessional and PROductive you can be! ■

Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside Hospital-Forsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

COSMETIC DENTISTRY… Are you happy with your smile? By DR. DAVID REMALEY, DDS Roswell Dental Care
W
hile traditional dentistry focuses on oral hygiene and preventing, diagnosing and treating oral disease, cosmetic dentistry focuses on improving DR. REMALEY the appearance of the teeth, mouth and smile. Most restorative, general and/or family dental practices address dental problems that require necessary treatment, whereas cosmetic dentistry provides elective – or desired – treatments or services. Cosmetic Trends Technological advancements in natural-looking, tooth-colored dental materials make today’s cosmetic dental treatments more durable and predictable than in years past. Additionally, dentists are now using more conservative techniques to preserve as much of your natural tooth structure as possible, depending upon your specific clinical situation. What would you like to change about your smile? • Chips or rough spots These can often be handled with dental bonding, which is the application of tooth-colored composite resin to repair a decayed, chipped, fractured or discolored tooth. • Broken-down teeth Porcelain crowns, inlays or onlays are usually used to handle broken-down teeth. • Uneven or misshapen teeth Recontouring can reshape your teeth. Porcelain veneers are another option. • Stained or yellow teeth Typically, teeth are whitened with bleaching or by applying porcelain veneers. • Cavities or silver (metal) fillings We use tooth-colored fillings and can also replace your unsightly metal fillings. • Gaps between the teeth Gaps can often be treated with orthodontics. For a fast and very effective treatment, gaps can be closed with porcelain veneers or, in some cases, dental bonding. • Crooked teeth In some cases, crooked teeth can be given a uniform appearance with porcelain veneers. • Gummy smile or irregular gum line Atlanta Dental Center uses laser treatment to address gum disease, to eliminate excess gum tissue and for gum reshaping and contouring. • Missing teeth Dental implants can be used in various ways to provide you with natural-looking, natural-functioning and natural-feeling new teeth. • Cracked teeth
We use dental bonding to repair cracked teeth. • Bad bite Invisalign treatment can adjust a bad bite. Along with virtual invisibility, Invisalign® is a more comfortable straightening solution for most people. Treatment Options Cosmetic dentistry treatments currently in use include: • Inlays/Onlays: Also known as indirect fillings, inlays and onlays made from porcelain or composite materials are a longlasting yet aesthetically pleasing way to provide a “filling” to teeth with tooth decay or similar structural damage. • Composite Bonding: Chipped, broken, discolored or decayed teeth may be repaired or have their appearance corrected using a procedure called composite bonding. • Teeth Whitening: Teeth whitening is perhaps the most commonly recommended cosmetic dentistry procedure. • Dental Veneers: Composite or porcelain laminates that are adhesively bonded to the surface of a tooth to correct and repair chips and cracks will improve a worn appearance or severe tooth discoloration. • Dental Implants: Dental implants are artificial tooth root replacements that are used as a part of prosthetic (artificial replacement) dentistry in order to compensate for tooth loss. • Smile Makeover: Smile makeovers involve a comprehensive assessment of your smile aesthetics in order to improve its overall appearance. • Full mouth reconstruction: While consulting with you about a smile makeover to primarily improve the aesthetic appearance of your smile, your dentist may discover that there is a need to provide necessary treatment to correct functional problems with your bite, muscles, teeth and bone structure. Recently voted Best Dentist of North Atlanta in “The Best of the Best” contest, Roswell Dental Care can help you maintain that healthy smile for a lifetime. Dr. David Remaley has been treating patients like family for over 30 years in Roswell and the North Atlanta area. re you tired of refreshing your lip color several times per day? Are you hiding your inventory of $25 lipsticks from your spouse? Do your lips seem to be shrinking and losing their shape and fullness? And the absolute worst, are you leaving your “mark” on every Starbucks latte’ you sip? RAHN Winter is the best time to consider permanent lip color. A natural appearing, soft lip line can give your lips the definition they need. If you have uneven symmetry of the lips, that can be adjusted for a more balanced smile. You will never regret having permanent, pretty lip color.
I can apply full lip color in subtle, soft tones or in a bright, vibrant color. Whichever you choose, your lips will appear fuller and brighter. You will love the effect it has on your smile. Many clients tell me that they occasionally change their lip color. There is no reason why you can’t add a different shade for that special Saturday night. Your base color will always be pretty. The process is simple. I use only high quality, medical grade anesthetic. The vermillion line (where the natural lip color meets the skin) is drawn and the final template is approved. A tray is prepared with one-timeuse/disposable products. The color is applied with very little trauma to the delicate lip tissue. The entire process takes less time than you would imagine. Aftercare products and instructions are provided. Soon you will
have pretty lips 24/7. There will be no more breaks during the day to refresh your lipstick. The days of lip color smudging your teeth or feathering outside of your lip line are gone. A followup appointment is scheduled a few weeks after the initial procedure to assess the healing process and do any minor touchups that may be needed. I am offering $200 off to Northside Woman/Herald readers now through Valentine’s Day. Mention this article when scheduling. Call 404.548.4148 for your appointment or go to my website, www.EBpermanentmakeup.com to request an appointment. I am also on Facebook at Enhanced Beauty Permanent Makeup and Instagram at EBpermanentmakeup. ■

A “Traditional” Philosophy – Best wishes for the New Year!
T
oday I want to talk to you about yearly traditions. As we begin the New Year, we offer you and your loved ones our very best wishes. We hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. One of your New Year resolutions may be to stay healthy. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body and overall well-being. I notice a lot of people go through their own “mini-makeovers” this time of year as well. They perform updates on their homes, make hair appointments to spruce themselves up for the New Year, and come in for teeth whitening procedures to erase coffee, tea, and wine stains and brighten up their smile. Yes, that onset of cold weather triggers a lot of activity for all of us. These reminders bring me to a question for you: What triggers your medical upkeep? Do you have certain times of the year that you plan your routine visits to your family doctor, gynecologist, and dentist? Are you reactive, only seeing a medical professional when you think something is wrong? Or do you keep a regular maintenance schedule for yourself and your family? Hopefully, the latter. It is my philosophy that preventative care is absolutely the most essential way to take charge of your health. I focus on the overall well-being of my patients and, with the help of modern science, I can actually
foresee dental issues and circumvent most of them before they become a bigger and more costly problem. Why is this important? Three reasons: • Your comfort. PATEL • Your time. • Your money. That’s right. Preventative care is first and foremost, more comfortable for patients. Heading off problems before they begin saves patients from larger dental procedures such as CORBETT crowns or root canals. While medical techniques allow me to perform these procedures with a higher level of comfort liked Sedation Dentistry for my patients, most people would still prefer to avoid them altogether if possible. Crowns and root canals are more costly than preventative care, and they take more time in the office to address and fix. With just two visits per year for a typical dental patient, I can keep you in preventative mode over the course of your lifetime. We can head off problems before they start and keep more money in your wallet, increase the overall health of your

lick, click, and click. Many families go online to search for senior care options and without even realizing it, disclose personal, financial, care and medical information to companies that share this information with dozens of third party providers. Within minutes, they are bombarded with emails and phone calls asking them to come take a tour of a property, set up a home assessment, or even meet with a financial planner. During a time of great stress and need, the last thing that families are worried about or understand is that their privacy is NOT being protected. The HIPAA law passed in 1996 by Congress and implemented in 1997, is a combination of regulations aimed at reducing waste, fraud and abuse in the health care industry. It also enacts strict security standards for the protection of personal health information, but unfortunately it does not apply to many private interrelated companies dealing with senior care. Some companies vaguely disclose that they share private information to third parties, but most offer no disclosure and even seek to use the information for financial gain.
We believe that these practices are wrong. Our clients share personal details about day to day care, medications, memory loss, savings and retirement, and disclose intimate HENTSCHEL details about their loved ones’ history and life. It is a sacred privilege to be in the position to receive this information and guide families to true solutions. Since our founding, we have committed to protect their rights and privacy and follow many of the HIPAA guidelines voluntarily. We do not fax or email their information out to third parties without their written or expressed consent and we never track their activity or identity thru our website. Families need guidance and TRUE advocacy. Although there are many genuine kindhearted advisors working in this field, we must hold companies accountable and encourage them to improve their practices. We wish everyone a blessed and safe 2018! Amy Hentschel is a senior care consultant and owner of Senior Provisions, LLC. For more information visit www. SeniorProvisions.com ■

Dermatology Tips and Tricks A
round the holidays, it is nice to have a few strategies for looking and continuing to look your best. Listed below are a few facts that we hope that you will find fun or useful. 1. Green cancels red. Whether you have rosacea, acne or just a complexion that is a bit more ruddy than you would like, it is helpful to know this little beauty secret. Green makeup, concealer or moisturizer is often the best strategy to cover up red blemishes, especially in a pinch. Apply a thin coat to the area that is too red, blend it in with the normal skin at the edges, and you have found the best way to elegantly hide a red mark or complexion. Knowing this tip can allow you to “conceal without caking.” A thin coat of green-tinted concealer often works better than a thick (and too obvious) coat of skin-toned cover-up. Need something stronger? Consider seeing a boardcertified dermatologist to discuss modern anti-redness options like Rhofade, Mirvaso, or Oracea. 2. UPF is the new SPF. Looking for a great gift idea for a family member who spends time outdoors? Modern beach, athletic, and outdoor wear is increasingly being sold with a “UPF” rating. UPF stands for ultraviolet protection factor. It works the same way that SPF (sun protection factor) ratings do on sunscreen. A shirt with a UPF rating of 50 lets 1/50 of the sun’s rays through. It used to be that rash guards and protective clothing were not fashionable or aesthetically appealing. Thankfully, our increasingly health-conscious population has spurred the growth of a whole industry catering to those who love the outdoors but who also want to keep their skin healthy. Amazingly, the average thin white cotton t-shirt only has
the same protection as a sunscreen with SPF 4! Just because your loved one is wearing a shirt while outdoors, they will not be truly protected unless they are wearing UPF-rated clothing. 3. Botox and Beyond. Many people are aware of how botox can nearly painlessly fade away wrinkles and improve one’s appearance in areas like the forehead and crow’s feet, but TAYLOR Botox and its cousin neuromodulators Xeomin and Dysport have applications that one might not guess. A skilled botox injector such as a board-certified dermatologist is likely to know a few creative ways to use Botox. Here are two examples: The gummy smile: When we smile, our upper lip lifts over our teeth. Sometimes, the upper lip lifts more than we would like, showing not only the teeth but a large amount of the gums as well. For many people, an amazing transformation can be achieved by injecting botox at a few strategic points on the upper lip near the nose. This can weaken the muscle that lifts the lip and restore the lip to a lower position when smiling. The perma-frown: A muscle called the depressor anguli oris pulls the corners of the mouth down. In many people, the muscle is a little too active, and when the person’s face is at rest, the corners are slightly pulled down giving an appearance of dissatisfaction. A few units of Botox at a strategic point above the jawline can often release this muscle allowing the corners of the mouth to pull back up. Now, people can see one’s true happiness
and contentment rather than the façade of a frown that was not felt. 4. Vein care. Winter is one of the best times to think about vein care, partially because most insurance companies require patients to wear compression stockings for 90 days before the company approves medically necessary vein treatments. Winter is the most comfortable time to wear those compression stockings because they will keep you warm in the winter but can really be a pest in July or August. Vein disease doesn’t simply mean varicose veins. Over a third of patients with vein disease may have no visible varicose veins at all. Some of the less visible veins can have valves that malfunction. This can lead to swelling, itching, leg pain, restless legs, leg pain at night, heaviness after sitting or being on your feet all day and many other complaints that might not seem to obviously arise from malfunctioning veins. A painless and safe ultrasound study can identify whether your symptoms are due to vein disease, and modern treatments are minimally invasive carry a vastly improved risk / benefit ratio over treatments of old. At Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta, it is our privilege to take care of you this holiday season and our pleasure to help you look and feel your best and healthiest. Whether you have a suspicious mole and want to discuss UPF clothing or whether you have a gummy smile or lower leg complaints that might be venous in origin, we are delighted to serve you. If you have skin health, vein or beauty questions, we hope that you will consider spending a part of your holiday season with us. ■ january2018 | northsidewoman.com | 25

A Great Smile is Easy to Share! By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics
H
as stress affected your smile? If so, you are not alone. Stress can be revealed in the eyes, the forehead, the nostrils, and the mouth. In your mouth, too much stress wears down the system, through clenching and grinding. Grinding is sliding the teeth from side to side, eventually weakening them, causing decay and sensitivity. Clenching is biting together tightly, overtime, damaging the complex system of muscles, ligaments, disc, and bone. These are two ways the mouth reacts to the demands and threat of stress. Orthodontic treatment improves function and esthetics of your teeth, minimizing wear and tear. After treatment, a night guard retainer can be
made to prevent further damage. Stress is not going away! As an orthodontist, our concern is not only your physical wellbeing, but also your emotional health, JORDAN extending beyond the patient to the family. Orthodontists treat families, seeing mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, sometimes from one generation to the next. While an orthodontist cannot cure you of stress, he or she can help treat the symptoms. A properly fitting and functioning bite is more comfortable, healthier and a great smile is easy to share! ■
