Core57’s Kolleen Losch Fitness includes life outside the gym

or Alpharetta resident Kolleen Riddick Losch, fitness doesn’t just start and stop at the gym. It’s a way of life. “We really believe that there are certain things you have to complete in order to be successful,” Losch said. “Walking into the gym is simply not enough. There are things you need to be doing outside of the gym to be able to make yourself more successful.” That’s the philosophy she brings as the owner and founder of two Alpharetta gyms: Core Physique and Core57. Core57, her second gym, is named for the five steps to success and seven foundations of fitness that Losch identified to get the most out of an exercise routine. The five steps to success — assessment, goal-setting, program design, implementation and growth — focus on the realistic and quantitative aspects of establishing and keeping a regimen. Each of these steps is personalized as part of a “fitness prescription” at Losch’s gyms. Whereas the steps focus on the body, the seven foundations of fitness emphasize the role of the mind and spirit. Losch identified the foundations as motivation, focus, education, accountability, community, self-preservation and celebration. “I’ve realized over the years with Core Physique that the people that are the most successful are the ones that live by these standards,” Losch said. The name Core57 also doubles as a nod to Losch’s five children and seven family members. While Losch has had a lifelong interest in fitness and helping others train, it was her

children who especially inspired her to found Core Physique. “They saw me working out with my friend and helping my friends that were struggling,” Losch said. “And they said, ‘Mom, you should open up a business doing fitness.’” Losch added that while it was her children who pushed her to open her first business, it was her husband who inspired and supported her to open her second location, Core57. Losch is a certified personal trainer, as well as one of seven senior master trainers for Trigger Point Therapy. She has a background as a competitive gymnast and collegiate cheerleader. During her career, Losch has worked with other professional athletes (basketball, baseball) and navy seals. “I really love to help people become better versions of themselves,” Losch said. “I think as women, we tend to put ourselves last, to focus our energies on everybody else. And my job is to teach women to put themselves first, because that’s teaching their family that they do matter and that they’re important. And if they can model good, healthy habits, the rest of the family will follow.” Losch helps women and men find a healthy balance in their lives, including sleep, hydration and nutrition. “We care about you 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” Losch said. “We care about you, and your family and your health … We’re dedicated to your overall heath and workouts. We want to make sure that even if you
come in with needs for modifications that all of our trainers know how to modify on a dime to help you do the exercises and be successful.” In the past, Losch’s gyms have partnered with the cities of Alpharetta and Milton to offer outdoor fitness classes for the community, and she said there are more to come once the weather heats up again. Anyone who joins Core57 starts with an assessment and goal-setting appointment before a personal trainer helps identify the classes and workouts that would best fit their needs. Losch has a qualified staff of trainers at both gyms with reassessments held every month. Losch also offers a clothing and sock line as well as nutritional supplements. HER CAREER
Banish nerves and find your voice
By KATE TUNISON Contributing Writer
F
emale empowerment. Those words, expressed different ways, have been around for a long time, but the actualization of female empowerment is hitting its stride these days — especially in the workplace. How can you find your voice, ride this wave and ensure you are heard, whether in your career, volunteer work, school or presenting at the PTA? Want to know a secret? The ability to communicate clearly is a critical skill for gaining recognition. You may be among the best and brightest in your chosen field, cross all your T’s and get to work on time, but if you do not present your ideas in a clear concise manner, you will likely get lost in the pack. This is true for just about anyone who wants to get ahead in anything. Sounds simple, but all too frequently, our nerves get in the way. In my work, my clients — both men and women — ask me most often about improving their communication and presentation skills. “How can I overcome my nerves?” is a common question. Or, “I avoid getting up and speaking, and my boss is starting to notice. Can you help me?” The answer is, yes. In this article, I look forward to highlighting ways for women to get comfortable with expressing themselves and find their voices. So, how do you calm your nerves so that you can be yourself, connect with your audience and deliver with passion? Here are a few tips to get started:
Recognize that anxiety can be good
At the heart of our anxiety is usually a desire to succeed. It means you care, and that’s a good thing. I like to say that if you don’t have a few butterflies before presenting, you may not have a pulse. You just need to get the butterflies flying in formation, instead of working against you. Connection versus perfection Trying to be a perfect presenter can suck the soul out of you and create a barrier between you and your audience. Throw perfection out the window, and focus more on connecting with your audience. That may
mean appearing approachable, smiling when appropriate, making eye contact and thinking of your presentation as a conversation, instead of a lecture. Do your homework, and present on topics that are of interest to and centered on benefits for your audience. While not a complete list, this will help you begin to make that connection. As you get more comfortable, you will begin to feel a positive energy coming from the audience, with head nods, smiles and other small acknowledgements that will feed your confidence. Believe this — they are rooting for you and want you to succeed. Why? Because no one wants to sit through a bad presentation.
Practice your delivery
Don’t wing it. I’ll repeat that. Don’t wing it. Respect your audience and have a clear message about how your presentation will benefit them, what they will know by the time it is over and why you are a credible person to present it. Then, strive to gain their interest right away. If you lose them in the first few moments, it will be very difficult to gain their attention again. Know your opening cold. Practicing doesn’t stilt you; it gives you the freedom to be yourself, so when there is an interruption or a question, you can handle it naturally and get back on track. Practice in your mirror, to an empty sofa, to your dog or to colleagues and family. Go over it enough times that you become very comfortable with the material and it starts to flow. Videotape yourself delivering as you would the day of your presentation — say your words out loud and look around the room. Play it back — are you better than you thought, or do you need more practice? Feel free to submit your questions about public speaking and communication skills to Northside Woman, and I will work to address them in future articles. ■ As owner and president of PresentingPlus! Detoxing your life

aren Stein knows all too well the link between health and environment, and in doing everything possible to manage what she can and cannot control. Nearly two decades ago, Stein and her husband experienced a series of health issues that led her to create a business focused on “lifestyle detox makeover programs” that address the full array of health choices in what you eat, do and how you live. “I truly believe that lifestyle changes are the entire puzzle,” said Stein, an Alpharetta resident and founder of Go Healthy With Karen (www.gohealthywithkaren.com). “Just addressing nutrition or supplements, or detoxing solely through those means is just a piece of the puzzle.” Stein grew up in Connecticut in a family that valued healthy living through nutrition and exercise. And while she said she was “healthy-ish,” the health crises she faced put her on a

more intense path to wellness. While living in Florida 20 years ago, Stein’s husband was diagnosed with cancer shortly after they were engaged. (He would eventually recover from five separate and rare cancers.) Stein subsequently developed autoimmune disease related to both stress and environmental issues. Not wanting health issues to control her, Stein embarked on a factfinding journey to get the answers she needed to make informed decisions. “I set upon a mission to meet every professional and research every topic in hopes of healing my husband and then myself,” said Stein, who had two toddlers at the time. At first, the knowledge she gained was for her own use, but she soon realized there was value in sharing what she learned with others. “I created my programs from all my years of research, practical experience and trial and error to help others who want to heal, or just live healthier lives, too,” said Stein, who graduated from Lehigh University (Pennsylvania) with a degree in

TOP TEN ‘HEALTH SINS’ TO AVOID
1.
Not thoroughly reading the label. Do not assume a product is healthy by falling for the marketing ploys that claim a product is “all natural” or “heart healthy.” 2. Location does not always matter. Just because you bought a product in a natural foods store or the organic section of a store does not necessarily mean it is healthy. 3. Substituting fruit juice for whole fruit. You are better off eating whole, fresh, unprocessed fruit to get all the fiber, nutrients and health benefits that a fruit offers. Juices are often a concentration of sugars and may include pesticides if it isn’t certified organic. 4. Not all salads are created equal. Assuming a salad is the healthiest choice on the menu could mean lots of unhealthy add-ons, including cheeses, fried chicken, croutons and calorie-rich dressings. These ingredients can turn a salad into one of the unhealthiest options! 5. Not getting adequate rest. We all need about eight hours a night to function at an optimal level. 6. Believing that “diet” or “sugarfree” beverages are healthy choices. Artificial sweeteners can wreak havoc on our health – so avoid them! 7. Wearing chemical-laden lipsticks. The average woman will ingest about a pound of lipstick a year, plus what’s absorbed through your lips. Many conventional lipsticks contain lead and heavy metals, as well as fragrances. What’s in yours? 8. Not paying attention to the hair products we use. The scalp has four times the absorption rate of your forearm. Many hair products and shampoos contain SLS, fragrances and formaldehydes that are very unhealthy and can be easily absorbed through the scalp. 9. Drinking out of plastic water bottles. Water is wonderful, but the plastic bottles we often reach for can contain BPA — an endocrine disruptor. BPA-free plastic still contains BPS and a host of other chemicals that haven’t been proven safe. Opt for glass or even stainless steel over plastic. 10. Assuming nutrition and exercise are the only factors that impact our health. It is important to address the entire “chemical body burden” to truly detox and let our bodies and immune systems function as intended.

SHE's FIT
Try something different this year - weightlifting By KAREN ESCOBAR Contributing Writer
M
any people tend to associate weightlifting and its equipment with Arnold Schwarzenegger-style body builders. They either feel like they could never achieve that muscle-bound look — or they just don’t want to look like that — so they stay away from the weights at the gym. Big mistake! Below are common misconceptions about weightlifting, and reasons why you might want to consider hitting the weights next time you’re in the gym.
Weightlifting is only for men
Not true! In fact, lifting weights is not only a perfectly acceptable activity for women, it is a very important one. It can help prevent loss of bone mass, which plays a role in reducing the risk of osteoporosis. It’s also super empowering for women to feel stronger.
Weightlifting doesn’t help you lose weight Wrong. When you combine weightlifting

with a healthy diet and cardio workouts, you’re on an express trip to weight loss. As you lift weights, you burn calories. The best part is you continue to do so, even after you’ve put the dumbbells down. When you lift weights, you improve your fat-to-muscle ratio. Remember, muscle is denser than fat; so if you don’t see the numbers you want on the scales, look for them in your clothes size or waist measurement instead.
Weightlifting makes you bulky
their output with a decent amount of musclerestoring shuteye. The good news is that lifting weights will help you sleep better. And once you’re well-rested, you’ll have more energy to hit the ground running (literally) in the mornings.
Weightlifting leads to injury
Wrong again. With the assistance of a good coach or trainer, weightlifting can actually prevent injury. As you can see, there’s no excuse not to include weightlifting as part of your workouts. Add weightlifting to your exercise routine in 2019 and you will lose weight, feel healthier and have a stronger, more toned physique. See you all in the gym.■
It’s true that lifting weights is the best strategy for gaining muscle mass. To encourage this, your trainer will have you lifting for shorter periods of time, at higher levels. This type of training will sculpt your body. If your goal is to stay toned, it’s all about lighter weights and more repetition. Stick with it, and you’ll trim down while creating a more toned form. HER STYLE
Out with the old, and in with a minimalist wardrobe The ins and outs of only wearing 33 items for three months By LORI WYNNE Contributing Writer
I
n recent years, many people have participated in Project 333's challenge of decluttering their closets and their lives by wearing only 33 items for three months. (https://bemorewithless.com/ project-333/) With the New Year upon us, are you looking for a resolution that will simplify your life, save you money, create space in your closet and help you feel confident every day in what you are wearing? I did it last spring, and it was life-changing! So, are you up for the challenge?
Getting started •
• • • •
Think about what you will be doing over the next 90 days, and consider your wardrobe needs. For example, work, travel and/or dressy events. Clear hanging space on your closet rod for your streamlined wardrobe. Pull out all of your seasonally appropriate tops, bottoms, jackets and dresses. Place them on your bed or other available space. Choose 33 pieces that are in good condition, fit you now and make you feel confident when you wear them. Put the rest of your clothes away, either in a box or relegated to a dark part of your closet.
Workout clothes, yard work clothes and pajamas are not included in the 33 pieces, but do not be tempted to wear your workout clothes all day. This is about looking and feeling your personal best. Some challenge purists include shoes, scarves and jewelry in their original 33 pieces. I did not. My 33 pieces included clothes only — and only pieces that I absolutely loved, were in good condition and fit me. Pieces that I kept in my closet and wore once in a while out of guilt (really?) did not make the cut. At the end of the 90 days, take another hard look at those clothing items that weren’t included in your minimalist wardrobe. Consign or donate any past14 | northsidewoman.com | january2019
HER STYLE season items that you didn’t wear. I just consigned a bunch of items that I haven’t worn the past two years — some because of sizing (thanks, menopause), and some because I upgraded (real fox fur vest). My closet is now filled with clothes I love, and I confidently invest in foundation pieces and great shoes. Next, assess how the following 90 days will look according to weather and your activity schedule, and take the challenge again with that season’s wardrobe. You will find you don’t need a closet full of clothes. You just need a few quality items that fit, are in good condition and make you feel confident and appropriate.

What the challenge is •
•
•
•
Stress-free: I dressed quickly each morning and felt fantastic in what I wore, because they were my favorite pieces that were of quality construction and beautiful. On one of the first days, it was cold and I needed a sweater. I thought about grabbing one of my cheap cotton crewnecks, but instead put on a fabulous cashmere sweater. I was warm, and I felt stylish and confident all day long. Liberating: I traveled to Portugal during that time, and packing was a breeze. I literally bunched my wardrobe together with my hands, lifted everything — hangers and all — off of the rod and folded them into my suitcase. Money-saving: Because I knew what I was going to wear, I wasn’t tempted to run to the store to find something to make me feel the way I wanted to feel. It was already hanging in my closet. Mind-freeing: Because I knew what I was going to wear, I could think about things other than clothes.
What it isn’t • •
Suffering: The creator of the challenge mentions several times that it is not about suffering. If your clothes wear out or do not fit, replace them. Boring: My streamlined wardrobe was not monochromatic. It was colorful, filled with patterns and just enough neutrals to make all the pieces relatable. I created several “new” outfit combinations with the items I already had in my closet.
Surprising revelation
My cream-colored T-shirt developed a hole at the belt buckle (many cotton-slub tees do). I went to the store to find a replacement for it. While shopping, I was tempted to buy some fun trendy tops. OK, I actually bought them and brought them home. Once in my closet, I realized they didn’t fit as well as what I already owned, nor did they go with my current wardrobe color palette. I happily returned them, knowing I was going to meet my goal of wearing only the items I had carefully chosen a couple of months before.
Confession
I stopped doing the challenge during the winter/fall, and found that I am back to my old habits of standing in my closet every morning wondering what I am going to wear and buying duplicates of items I already have. I am now resolved that 2019 is my year for a streamlined closet and wardrobe! Are you with me? ■

Diet dow Shift the focus from the scale to ‘total fitness’ By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
I
t’s early January … do you know where your New Year’s resolutions are? For many with lofty goals for the New Year, resolutions are discarded as quickly as the confetti and noisemakers on New Year’s Eve. And the No. 1 resolution left by the wayside is often the goal of losing weight. Researchers with Boston Medical Center say nearly half the adult population in the United States goes on a diet each year, specifically to lose weight. However, only about one in six people will find long-term success, which is defined as keeping the weight off for more than a year. The irony is Americans spend about $66 billion a year on weight loss programs and products, which apparently have made little progress in battling the bulge. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports about 70 percent of the U.S. population is overweight, of which a whopping 40 percent are considered obese. Medical experts put much of the failure on diet plans that promise quick weight loss through effective marketing and gimmicks that appeal mainly to the emotions. “It is human nature for those with weightloss goals to want instantaneous results,” said Atlanta-based dietitian Ilana Katz (www. onforlife.com). “[But] evidence proves that people who accomplish a gradual and steady weight loss — no more than one to two pounds per week — are more successful at long-term maintenance.” An effective diet plan should also be tailored specifically to the individual for optimal results. Wendy Hood, a certified nutritionist specialist from Cumming, said dieters often follow the crowd, instead of sticking to the basics of what may be best for them. She advises clients to start with a resolution that works for them — and is attainable. “Failure comes in when individuals decide to become trendy and jump in with the latest fads,” said Hood, a health and fitness coach (facebook.com/myhealthkick). “One person’s successful diet plan may be another person’s ‘poison plan.’” Katz, who specializes in sports nutrition
and body composition, said putting the focus on overall health, and not the numbers on the scale, would go far in limiting extreme diets that are likely doomed to failure. “Focusing on health as a primary goal would reduce these highly restrictive eating plans, which are ultimately impossible to maintain, with the increased risk of gaining back any weight loss — plus [more],” said Katz, who is also an endurance athlete. She said most diets fail because they do not become part of the person’s lifestyle. They are simply something someone does for a time period to get results. "If [you] do not see [yourself] doing the same diet in two or three months, or even six months to a year, I would recommend not even starting it,” said Katz. She said “yo-yo” weight loss and weight gain can outweigh any shortterm health benefits. Research conducted by the National Institute for Health found about 35 percent of weight lost from dieting is regained within one year. Long-term weight loss is possible, scientists determined, but finding the right plan is the key. There are dozens of diet plans ranging from restricting nearly everything to eating anything, from high-fat to no-fat and cave man to Mediterranean. Understanding your goals, whether it’s weight loss only or to address a medical concern like diabetes, is the key to a successful start. “The first step in making the right choice for any eating plan is to understand what our individual body needs,” said Hood, who recommends a complete medical physical before embarking on a new eating plan. “Your body is communicating with you on a daily basis. Slow down and listen.” Women also need to understand that overall health and fitness is the goal, not thinness. Every eating plan should also include a plan for physical activity as well. “There are many unhealthy thin people,” said Hood. “Your body will respond naturally to a healthy lifestyle and will shed unhealthy weight as you balance healthy eating, exercise, reduction in stress and enjoying relationships.” It is human nature for those faced with weight loss goals to want instant results. Evidence, however, proves that people who have a gradual and steady weight loss (no more than one to two pounds per week) are
wnfalls more successful at long-term maintenance. Shayna Komar, an oncology dietitian with the Cancer Wellness Center of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital, said success comes with setting attainable goals. HOOD “If the goals are too lofty and full of fluff, you will never get there,” said Komar. “For example, instead of saying ‘I want to lose 100 pounds,’ [say] ‘I’m going to exercise three days per week with my friend for 30 KATZ minutes and make sure I drink eight cups of water each day.’ That is very specific!” Age does play a role in the success of diet plans, and women have to work harder to keep the pounds from creeping on as they get KOMAR older. “There is no age when weight gain becomes inevitable,” said Komar. “Yes, it gets harder after 40 with women to lose weight, but not impossible. Hormones play a huge part in weight loss, and people sometimes don’t know that.” As we age, our metabolism slows down, and combined with muscle loss, Hood said that plays a role in weight gain. “The answer is to keep moving, period,” said Hood. “It’s not necessary to be a CrossFit champion. If you are, then great. But if you are an average woman, pick up some dumbbells, [do] push-ups, lunges, squats and sit ups. As you age, your body will remember these incredible exercises.” And for women concerned with postholiday weight gain, Katz said the average person gains two to three pounds in the period between Thanksgiving and New Year. Not outrageous, but she advises women to tackle these extra pounds quickly, and not allow them to compound each year. “It is important to live life, celebrate and enjoy the good times,” said Katz. “Food often plays a role in this, but my favorite motivational phrase for the holiday season is, ‘It is a holi-day, not a holi-month!’” ■

SIMPLE STEPS FOR A DIET SUCCESS Wendy Hood, owner of My H.E.A.L.T.H. Kick • Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, protein and whole grains. Your body needs healthy fats and plenty of water. A great rule of thumb is to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. Exercise at least five days a week, 30 minutes a day, and sleep at least seven hours a day. • The most dangerous ingredient is sugar. Leave sugar alone, as well as artificial sugar. Instead, use raisins, dates, applesauce, maple syrup, coconut sugar, and other natural sweeteners. • Do not eat after 8 p.m. • Don’t have time to get to the gym? Take five minutes at the top of the hour for a mini workout. Spend the five minutes doing jumping jacks, squats, running in place, walking, push-ups, sit-ups or another exercise you can do for a five-minute segment. Ilana Katz, MS, RD, CSSD • Exercise regularly (at least two to three times per week for 30 to 60 minutes). • Reduce processed (boxed, packaged, preserved) foods and focus on foods rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole grains, lean protein). • Maintain appropriate portion control (avoid extremes of both over eating and starvation). • Eliminate alcohol or at very least, moderate consumption. Shayna Komar, RD, LD, Cancer Wellness Center of Piedmont Atlanta Hospital • Think “G-BOMBS” … greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and lots of spices. january2019 | northsidewoman.com | 17

New Year, new you: Financial reset By ALLISON NYE Contributing Writer
T
he most popular New Year’s resolutions tend to be centered around health and fitness. While that’s important, this is also the perfect time to take a deep dive into your finances to stay on track for the upcoming year. • Review your budget: This is a main pillar of your financial life. Look over the past year to see if you strayed from your budget. If you spent more, figure out where most of the funds went. Then see if you can cut costs from that category. If you spent less, calculate how much less and take on debt reduction more aggressively or increase your savings. • Review your net worth: Your net worth is calculated by subtracting what you owe from what you own. If your net worth decreased from the past year, ask yourself why. Did you buy a new house? Is there more outstanding debt on credit cards? Your net worth is the truest gauge of where you are overall in your financial life and can give you the best picture of how you are faring. We have a tool at oXYGen Financial to help our clients keep track of their net worth on a daily basis. • Shop your bills: I’ve mentioned this before, but shopping your
bills is an easy way to slash your expenses. Set goals: Set your financial goals for the upcoming year. Do you want to save more for retirement, save to make a certain big purchase or go on a trip? Having these conversations early and starting your savings plan will get you that much closer to accomplishing them. • Review insurance coverage: Insurance coverage is not “sexy;” therefore, it is most likely not at the top of everyone’s list. However, it is extremely important. If you’ve received a pay raise, it could be a good idea to increase life insurance coverage and disability insurance coverage. Also, make sure you are fully covered on homeowner, auto and medical coverage for the year. No one wants to realize they are worse off financially this year than last year. Set goals, stick to them and reach out to us at oXYGen Financial for additional financial tips. ■ •

Forsyth Sheriff’s Office empowers women through self-defense By KATHLEEN STURGEON

n an attack, most people do not have easy access to a weapon, so it is crucial to know basic self-defense skills. In Forsyth County, the sheriff’s office is working hard to help the female population defend themselves in case of an emergency. For the past 10 years, the department has been offering free self-defense classes throughout Forsyth County to any woman who is interested. Cpl. Doug Rainwater, a public information officer who has taught the class, said at first, the program was offered in conjunction with neighborhood watch events. A lot of the women who attended asked about self-defense classes targeted for women. “We live in a bubble,” he said. “We think all the bad news and stories we hear aren’t happening here. We don’t really think about our own environment. But it only takes a few minutes for a bad guy to drive to the suburbs and do something bad. We want to make females think about their surrounding environment whenever they’re out by themselves.” As the neighborhood watch classes became more popular, the concept evolved into its own class that any woman in the area could attend. The sheriff’s office partnered with Forsyth County Parks and Recreation to host the classes at county recreation centers. Since then, the classes typically max out at capacity, with as many as 100 women participating. “This is the most popular class we teach at the sheriff’s office,” Rainwater said. “Neighborhood watch is still important, but due to social media, a lot of neighborhoods 20 | northsidewoman.com | january2019

Simplify your home in the New Year
Making interior spaces functional, safe, and beautiful
By TRACY HARKNESS Contributing Writer

s we embark on a new year, it’s time to set goals and resolutions for ourselves. Have you ever thought about making a resolution to simplify your home? As time goes on, our homes tend to accumulate too much clutter. A simple home doesn’t mean it is cold and sterile though. Your home should bring you gratitude, ease your mind, create balance and lastly inspire you. If your home doesn’t do all of those things, then there is no better time than the present to get started. The first plan of attack is to purge. Even if you are a consistent purger, drawers and cabinets always fill up with unnecessary items. You most likely have a small kitchen appliance that you have never used that could be donated, or one that is broken and needs to be tossed. Make room in your kitchen cabinets by clearing out the junk. Clear your counters and tuck away those items you don’t use on a daily basis, but still need. A clean counter makes every kitchen look organized and up-todate. Your pantry, laundry room cabinets and bathroom cabinets also should not be overlooked. Simplifying these areas will likely improve daily tasks, and honestly, just make you feel better. Now, take a look around at your living areas. Maybe you have stacks of magazines or books that you don’t want to recycle? That’s OK. Purchase baskets or trays to store these items, so they look neat and tidy on your bookshelf and are easily accessible. Look around at your lighting. Do all of your lightbulbs match? Switching out bulbs to all the same color is very important. You may even need to purge that lamp that doesn’t turn on anymore, or simply update the lampshade to a new crisp, white linen one. Simple changes, yet so effective! After you have purged and cleaned, take note of your actual furniture pieces and accessories. Do you have a drop spot in your entry that becomes cluttered week after week? Try adding a change bowl or a hook for keys. Maybe a basket to stack your mail that you will eventually go through over the weekend. Being intentional with storage is a simple solution to tidying up the clutter. Designer tip: If you are in the process of a remodel or renovation, make sure you install a docking drawer to keep those electronics out of sight while charging. This also frees up counter space. Good luck in the New Year, and make 2019 the year of simplifying! ■

Taking care of your investment…
M
y clients often ask me about the proper care of the furnishing that they are selecting, here are some recommendations that will insure the longevity of your investments. Upholstered pieces should be vacuumed on a regular basis making a conscious effort to flip and rotate your cushions. There are fabric protection plans available with limited warranties, many are good for up to five years and may be extended beyond that. Most of the fabrics available today are considered high performance and easily tolerate everyday use. Be aware that most warranties will not cover damages caused by pets. I encourage you not to shy away from lighter colored fabrics, as they often wear as well or better than some of the darker tones. Accent pillow casings are usually easily removed and can be dry cleaned. When cleaning wood trimmed upholstered furniture be careful not to stain the fabric with scratch cover oils and polishes. Leather needs to be cleaned with products that guarantee conditioners that are suitable. Keeping leather from becoming dry and brittle is paramount in insuring a desired patina. The proper care of wood furniture is vital to maintaining its beauty. There are numerous products available, avoid those that claim to add a protective barrier to the surface as they often leave a product build up and over time cause discoloration of the wood. Realize that all your wood surfaces are porous and should be treated appropriately. Keeping coasters readily available to be placed under drinks will avoid accidently leaving moisture rings and permanent stains. The use of placemats, table pads and coverings are always recommended when serving and dining at your table. There are companies that will manufacture custom fit pads for your formal table and extensions. Some dents and scratches add to the patina and charm of a piece, however for those you choose not to live with, it is wise to call a professional wood repair person in to correct the 22 | northsidewoman.com | januaryr2019
issue. Stone surfaces also require care and maintenance. Quartz is one of the most durable surfaces on the market today, however marble, slate and concrete tops are subject to the same casualties as wood and should be treated in the same fashion. Metal tops such as copper or steel scratch easily and often discolor naturally which is often a desired and accepted look in design, if it is your intent to keep these surfaces pristine you may want to rethink your selection. Everyone appreciates natural light in their homes, keep in mind that extended sunshine often fades fabrics, leathers and wood. The installation of window treatment, draperies, shutters, or tinting your windows will only prove to benefit your furnishings. Furniture is meant to be enjoyed, respect your investment with care and it will serve you for many years! ■

Walls are a simple yet high impact way to transform any room By ZAINA WUEST Exquisite Living
W
ith shimmering metallic and elegant wallpapers, shiplap-style cladding and even simple paint effects, walls can create a dramatic focal point in a space. If you’re considering an update, remember that color is a powerful design tool. It can make a room feel peaceful, happy, comfortable or dramatic. The paint colors you choose, as well as the color of the furniture and accessories, all create a mood. A neutral paint scheme may go with everything, but a lot of beige and gray can really get you down. We love creating lively living spaces with vibrant pops of color. But choosing the right shade can be an overwhelming task. Even paint cards can be misleading – you’ll quite often find that a color looks more or less pigmented when applied to a large surface area, and the exact shade will be affected by the light fall, size and even the contents of the room. The good news is, if it doesn't work, you can simply start again. If you’re considering a makeover for you home’s walls, here are five tips to get you on the right track. • Consider the amount of natural light you get in the space. Sure, a dark shade will make for a dramatic feature wall, but without natural light, it’ll just end up looking grim and depressing. • Be wary of eye-popping brights. That eye-popping hue may have caught your attention in the glossy magazine, but consider the size of the space you’re working with. If it’s not big enough to carry it, bright shades can overwhelm and create

visual clashes. Remember, you can always introduce vibrant hues through cushions, throws and artwork. Avoid going too matchy-matchy. Furniture, floor coverings, paintings and rugs can serve as solid inspiration for which color to choose, but avoid matching everything exactly. Choosing a shade much lighter or darker than the pre-existing elements of a room works much more effectively. Don’t rely on sample swatches. Always test the color directly on the wall to get a true sense of how it will really look. Leave it on the wall for a day or two, and observe how the light plays with it, creating shadows at different times. For example, black paint has a reputation for looking dramatically different in certain lights – from green to blue to gray. Colors tend to come out darker on walls than they appear on paint chips, so if in doubt, err on the lighter side. Don’t get caught up in trends. Shudder at the thought of that splotchy sponge-painted wall trend popular in the 1990s? Don’t get caught up in the fads. Be daring, but follow your instincts and not the trends. ■ Exquisite Living |6225 Atlanta Highway | Alpharetta, GA 30004

A literary legacy Grandmother creates lasting memories, pens book with young granddaughter
By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer

ith an eye on posterity, not to mention just plain fun, Susan Swann had a proposition two years ago for her granddaughter Amelia Lynne Swann, who was then 4 years old. “How about you and Nana write a book together?” Swann said. Amelia adored the idea. “She has a very big imagination,” her grandmother said. Swann, who was winding down her career in the education field, had moved near her son Alex and his family in Cumming. The author of a 2012 memoir, she knew about publishing and the inherent legacy of the written word. “If we do this together,” Swann recalled thinking, “this is something that will last forever.” Over the next two years, “Amelia’s Amazing Adventures” took shape. The story that Amelia came up with included her real-life best friend Nora Snape, a planet named Pink and an evil band of worms stealing kookaburra eggs in Australia. Nora’s father, tattoo artist Brian Snape, signed on as first-time children’s book illustrator. Amelia’s mother Karry suggested profits benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities. And Amelia’s kindergarten class at Cumming’s Ivy League Montessori School had a sneak peek at the book and draft illustrations nine months before it was published in October 2018. In advance of spring book signings, granddaughter and grandmother recently took turns discussing their colorful, captivating creation. 26 | northsidewoman.com | january2019

What would you tell other grandchildren and grandparents who might want to write a book together?
Susan: Begin the process by sitting down with pen and paper and letting your grandchildren’s ideas flow from their imagination. Listen without judgment and ask curious questions. For example, when Amelia came up with the idea of a bully named Perat and his evil band of worms who stole Katie Kookaburra’s eggs, my next question was, “How will your Super Amelia solve the problem?” Her clever, ingenious answer involved magic green bubblegum, which I never could have come up with. Fight gravity – take a hike! By STEVE HUDSON Contributing Writer
G
ravity is a funny thing. Used to be, you could count on it as one of the constants of the physical world, like rain and wind and the daily gridlock at the intersection of Old Milton Parkway and Ga. 400. But not any more. Right here at my house, in fact, gravity seems to be getting stronger every week. How do I know this? Easy. I do experiments. Every couple of days, I get on the trusty bathroom scales. Over the past few weeks (ever since Thanksgiving, in fact), the number I see has been creeping up. See? That proves it. Gravity is getting stronger! I told my wife about this phenomenon the other day. I figured she’d be amazed at my keen insights and nuanced observational ability. I was wrong. “Gravity fluctuation?” she said, looking meaningfully at my waistline. “Maybe it has more to do with holiday feasting and pecan pie.” Uh oh. Hadn’t thought of that one. And so, in case you too have observed these apparent gravitational fluctuations, I 28 | northsidewoman.com | january2019
offer a possible solution – take a walk in the woods! As a means of dealing with gravity, it’s pretty darned effective … and measuring the results turns out to be surprisingly easy too. Just step on that bathroom scale. If the number goes down, then – voila! – there you have it. Isn’t science wonderful? Okay. I’m sure I’ve convinced you of the validity of the concept, as the scientists like to say. But where are the best places to do your part to keep gravity under control? I’m glad you asked, and the answer may be closer than you think – specifically, in the various “units” of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area (CRNRA). Here, then, is a little sampling of places where you can go to deal with that postholiday gravitational shift. I’ve presented them, more or less, in order of how challenging they are. Start with the easy ones, and then work your way up. And stick with it. In fact, why not make a resolution this year to head outside and hike on a regular basis? You’ll see some beautiful scenery and get some great workouts too. After a few weeks, you’ll feel better and notice that the hiking’s getting easier. Who knows? Maybe gravity will start to decrease around your bathroom scales too!
Cochran Shoals Fitness Trail
Cochran Shoals Unit, CRNRA. The Cochran Shoals Fitness Trail is the perfect place to start. This wide, level and smoothly graveled loop is easily accessible via a connector trail starting at the Interstate North Parkway parking area just north of I-285 near the south end of the loop or from Columns Drive on the loop’s north end. Depending on where you start and the route you take, it offers up to about 3 miles of nostress walking. One side of the loop parallels the Chattahoochee River; the other, more or less, follows the toe of a ridge on the far side of the river’s floodplain. You can hike this loop in

one side paralleling the river (often very closely) and the other following the toe of a nearby ridge. Unlike the loop at Cochran Shoals, however, this one is an honest-togoodness foot trail open only to hiking. If you hike this trail, bring your binoculars. Wildlife viewing can be good.
Sibley Pond Loop
either direction. There’s even a cut-across trail partway through, which allows you to mix and match your route for a variety of hikes. Because this trail is wide and level, it’s a great place to take the kids. You’ll even see folks pushing strollers.
Johnson Ferry North Loop
Johnson Ferry Unit, CRNRA. Located directly off Johnson Ferry Road, the Johnson Ferry North Unit of CRNRA offers another basically level, but much more woodsy loop hike. From the parking area, a connector takes you to the loop. As at Cochran Shoals, this trail is a stretched-out loop with
Sope Creen Unit, CRNRA The loop trail around Sibley Pond in the Sope Creek Unit offers yet another fairly easy hike. It’s accessible via a connector that leads from the parking area off Paper Mill Road downhill to the pond. The connector drops down a hill, but the lakeside loop is pretty much level as it follows the shoreline and eventually brings you back to where you began. Except for the portion that follows the dam, the loop itself is open only to hikers, though other trails in the area are open to mountain bikers as well. Note that there are a number of spur and connector trails leading off of this loop. It’s easy to get turned around if you move off the loop without a good trail map, so be advised.
Cochran Shoals upland trails
Cochran Shoals Unit, CRNRA Now that you’ve started developing your hiking chops, let’s take another look at the
Cochran Shoals Unit. Remember the graveled Fitness Trail? As you walked the back side of that loop, you may have noticed several spurs leaving the loop and heading uphill. Those trails connect with the rest of the Cochran Shoals trail network – the unit’s “upland” trails, if you will – and provide the gateway to take your hiking up a level. What awaits? Well, there’s a main upland loop that’s open to mountain biking as well as to hiking, plus several interior foot-trafficonly trails inside that loop. Some sections are challenging and will most definitely get your heart rate up. They’re remote, too, and it’s not unheard of to find sections of trail blocked by a fallen tree. Remember, when hiking the hike/ bike portion of the trail, keep an eye out for mountain bikes.
Gold Branch Main Loop
Gold Branch Unit, CRNRA When you’re ready for a challenge, take a look at CRNRA’s Gold Branch Unit. Located off Lower Roswell Road, it offers a variety of moderate to challenging hiking opportunities. From the parking area, a connector trail leads down a hill and then crosses a wetland area and creek to connect with an extensive network of foot trails. By mixing and matching these many trails, you can customize your hike to just about any length and degree of difficulty you want. For a real challenge, plan a loop hike on the trails that follow the perimeter of the unit. Several loops are possible, and each provides a real workout that takes you into some of the more remote sections of the unit. In fact, the southern loop is one of my personal favorite hikes within CRNRA. As you enjoy some post-holiday hiking in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, you’ll soon come to realize what a treasure it is. It provides great hiking right here on the north side of Atlanta (we’ve only scratched the surface here), and it’s the envy of other municipalities far and wide. We are indeed fortunate to have it! So stick to that resolution to do some hiking this year. Round up the family, throw a water bottle into your daypack, lace up the hiking shoes and go. You’ll feel the benefits right away – and I’ll bet it will become a habit that you’ll enjoy all year long. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area is a great place to hike, and author Steve Hudson written a book (Hiking the Hooch) which describes and maps its many trails in detail. Copies area available local outfitters or on Amazon, and signed copies are available from ChattahoocheeMedia.com. ■ january2019 | northsidewoman.com | 29

Southern Charm in downtown Alpharetta Comfort food and regional favorites define Southern Porch 30 | northsidewoman.com | january2019

long the ever-expanding restaurant row in downtown Alpharetta, Southern Porch is drawing crowds and raves for its modern spin on traditional regional favorites. Located in the distinctive bungalow that once housed Mittie’s restaurant, Southern Porch shares a parking lot — and ownership — with the popular Flatlands Bourbon and Bayou restaurant. While the exterior of the building has changed little, save for the expanded eating space on the front porch, inside, the venue has been transformed into modern, farmhouse chic. Comfortable throw pillows, butcher block tables and a welcoming porch swing invite diners to sit and stay a spell.
GOOD EATS
If the atmosphere prompts a look, the menu will build a lasting relationship. Among the menu items at Southern Porch are a host of Southern specialties, including shrimp and grits, a pecan chicken sandwich and a fried green tomato sandwich with a house-made pimento cheese. If you are feeling a little north of the border, try “The Wife” — smoked salmon, tomato, fresh basil and cream cheese on marble rye. Kevin Jeskey, Southern Porch’s vice president of operations, has spent the past 25 years in the food service world, filling positions from prep cook to catering, and getting a good idea of what brings customers back time and again. At Southern Porch, the formula for
success is creating an exceptional dish while maintaining the comfort food feel. “The best-selling items that customers rave about at the Southern Porch include chicken and waffles, and the Dirty Chicken Biscuit, which is a homemade biscuit with fried buttermilk chicken, fried egg, pimento cheese and covered in country gravy with potato browns,” said Jeskey. On the weekends, Southern Porch features an expansive brunch, with all the menu favorites, alongside their famous Bloody Mary bar and mega mimosas and mimosa flights from the full bar. All menu items are available for takeout. Southern Porch also caters events. Southern Porch is the latest addition
to the restaurant portfolio of Jodi and Vinny Chieco and their daughter, Courtney. Executive Chef Francois Duquette also delivers his favotite southern dishes. The family opened Flatlands Bourbon and Bayou in August 2016, after owning restaurants in the Roswell area for years. ■

ASK THE VET
Beyond conventional medicine: Integrative veterinary care By DR. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Clinic www.lovinghands.com
T
raditional Western medicine typically focuses on treating a single disease to mitigate effects, rather than bringing the body, mind and soul into a state of enhanced well-being. There is little emphasis on supporting lifestyle change and a stronger emphasis on pharmaceuticals and surgery. Complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) encompasses disciplines like acupuncture, botanicals (herbs), supplements, exercise, homeopathy, chiropractic, traditional Chinese medicine and spiritual and psychological well-being. It emphasizes maximizing the natural healing and restorative ability of the individual. An example of these differences is the approach to epidemic levels of Type II diabetes and obesity in humans and cats in the United States. Conventional medicine works toward finding new drugs to enhance insulin activity and devices to better measure elevated blood sugar. CAM focuses on lifestyle changes to decrease stress, promote exercise and alter food choices. Botanicals, traditional Dr. Joanne Roesner, Chinese medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, DVM, DABVP with Charlie and Kurt. chiropractic and other modalities are utilized to move the body toward a state of optimal healing. CAM obviously involves more patient participation and engagement than simply taking a trip to the drug store. Integrative medicine, which is what we offer at Loving Hands Animal Clinic, is the best of both worlds. It takes into account body, mind and spirit of each individual patient and melds all appropriate therapies from both CAM and conventional medicine to promote healing and health. To be done safely, this requires extensive knowledge of both disciplines and should always involve a veterinarian partner in animals. Because of the breadth of the modalities involved, patient care often utilizes a treatment team, rather than a single veterinarian.
PET OF THE MONTH
M
Animal chiropractic works to manually adjust vertebral subluxation complexes to maximize mobility of the spine. Limited spinal mobility results in dysfunction of the neurologic and musculoskeletal systems, which can have body wide effects. Most animals with any lameness or spinal problems have issues that respond to chiropractic care. All practitioners doing veterinary chiropractic need to be specifically trained with animals. Look for the CIVCA credentials of a certified veterinary chiropractor. Although utilized most often for management of pain, veterinary acupuncture has broader applications. It can be utilized for internal organ disease, spinal issues, skin problems, urinary incontinence and multiple other conditions. Needles, with or without electro-stimulation, are inserted at points where nerves and blood vessels come together. From a traditional medicine standpoint, acupuncture has been shown to stimulate nerves and blood flow, increase toxin elimination and to release anti-inflammatory substances. According to traditional Chinese veterinary medicine, acupuncture heals by correcting energy imbalances. Unlike medications or supplements, acupuncture lacks side effects. The designation for a certified veterinary acupuncturist is CVA. Unfortunately, there is not yet an official credential to certify knowledge in the botanical (herbal) medicine area. Herbs can have interactions with each other and with prescription and non-prescription drugs, as well as their own side effects. It is imperative that a veterinarian knowledgeable in this modality be involved. Human herbalists are not trained in animal physiology, which, especially in cats, differs greatly in some critical ways from humans. Please attend our next Pet Care University Jan. 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Loving Hands Animal Clinic if you are interested in CAM therapies. Dr. Stephanie Hall will be doing a presentation on integrative care. Details can be obtained through Appen News publications or on Loving Hands Animal Clinic’s Facebook and social media pages. â–

HER GARDEN
In 2019, garden like a supermodel! By ABRA LEE
Contributing Writer
C
an you believe some of the best garden advice I ever read was found in an article about eyebrow microblading? The article was written by supermodel, business woman and multi-hyphenate Veronica Webb, who serves up realness on her lifestyle blog Webb On The Fly. In it, she was sharing her struggles about losing her eyebrows and making the decision to microblade, so that they could permanently be restored. Three sentences into the article, Webb hit me with advice I had never heard in my career. “I always say, ‘If you can’t grow it – buy it! That goes for everything, from fruits and vegetables to hair,” she wrote. Say what? Just throw my whole horticulture degree in the trash already, because this is what you call freedom! The reality is, everyone really can’t grow everything. So why are we putting this type of pressure on ourselves? While the plants lay dormant in January, take a hard look around whatever you interpret as your garden safe space and really reflect on what you can (or cannot) do this 34 | northsidewoman.com | january2019
year.
I have spent so much time in communication with heartbroken people who nursed their pepper crops all summer. No matter how hard they tried, the plant wouldn’t fruit. Why sweat it when you can pull a Veronica Webb? Purchase those peppers at your local farmers market and enjoy your meal in peace. Don’t have time to maintain the grass? Plan to take up some of the lawn and plant fruiting trees or flowering shrubs. Sometimes, your green thumb does go black. This happens for various reasons, and that is OK. Am I saying don’t try to grow new things? Heck no! I’m saying don’t stress yourself. So while my eyebrows may very well stay in shambles in 2019, you know what won’t? My garden. ■

NewYear’s relationship reset
SHE's SEXY
By ELAINE WILCO, MA, LPC Contributing Writer
T
he New Year is traditionally a time for reflection and a time for change. It’s a time when we think about how to make the coming year better than the one before. Typically, people vow to stop smoking, lose weight or begin an exercise program, and all too often, these plans don’t last beyond the first few weeks in January. It is hard to make significant changes in long-established habits, and difficult to stay motivated when you don’t see clear results. Sure, becoming healthier is an important goal. But what if you could put that effort into making changes that would be truly meaningful to your life and the lives of those around you? A relationship reset is that kind of change. To start on this important journey, you just have to ask yourself three simple questions. What kind of relationship do I want? Few of us have the perfect relationship, but we seldom focus on how the relationship would ideally look. Maybe it would be: • Respectful, kind, considerate? • Exciting, adventurous, challenging? • Affectionate, loving, romantic, sexy? • A peaceful, supportive partnership? • All of the above or something else? How have I contributed to creating the kind of relationship I want? Here is a chance to take an honest look at your own efforts to make your relationship what you want it to be. Remember, this is about you, not your partner. What concrete steps do I intend to take in the next year to improve my relationship? The key here is to be specific as possible, and again, to focus on your own actions, not your partner’s. Some possible actions might be: • Greet my partner with a hug and a kiss every day. • Avoid letting irritation creep into my tone of voice. • Ask, rather than tell. • Make time to focus on my partner. Sure, it would be great if your partner wanted to make some relationship resolutions, too; and maybe you could do this together. On the other hand, a relationship is a system. If one part of a system changes, the whole system is different. To paraphrase Gandhi, be the change that you wish to see in the relationship!■

Irregular cycles
DR. J. REYES
By DR. STACEY PEREIRA
M
any women experience irregular cycle patterns or irregular bleeding. There are a myriad of causes! You gotta get it checked out! Some women have this from onset of puberty while others may acquire it later in life. Women who are 18 years of age or older should have a baseline evaluation for their irregular cycles. Evaluation generally consists of some blood work to look at hormones and an ultrasound to look at potential structural causes of irregular bleeding. For women who are 35 years of age or older, it is important to also collect some uterine cells to make sure, however rare, that there is no cancerous cause to the bleeding. Structural causes, for example uterine polyps are generally addressed by removal. Uterine polyps can be removed in office! It is a quick procedure done vaginally with no cuts and you are back to work the next day. Hormonal causes are usually treated with oral low dose hormones to regulate the cycle. For many women pills aren’t an option. Younger women who plan on having children might pursue other longer term local treatments such Intrauterine devices. Ladies who are done with children may consider an ablation. This is a short procedure again done in office, where the cells that make the uterine lining are burned. Ablations have excellent long term outcomes and only 5-10% of women are unhappy with the outcome and choose to pursue a hysterectomy afterwards. Hysterectomies are almost always done laparoscopically - meaning with tiny cameras- and at Modern Ob GYN we use the most up to date approach with the DaVincii Robot. This ensures the safest and quickest hysterectomy for women who are good candidates. Don't sit at home with your irregular cycles! It's important to get it checked out-- and as you can see there's a ton of different ways to get it taken care of, whichever way fits your needs best. Modern OBGYN has three convenient office locations. Visit our newest office at Avalon in Alpharetta located at 2710 Old Milton Parkway Suite 100, Alpharetta, GA 30009. New Year, New You: Enter 2019 with a brand-new smile
I
t’s that time when New Year’s resolutions are being made. The beginning of a new year is exciting in a lot of ways. New ideas are brewing, new adventures are to be had, and you can start over with a fresh new slate. What are you hoping to achieve in 2019? While many join a gym this time of year to get their bodies in shape, how about showing some extra love to your smile? Are there teeth imperfections that you would like to see corrected? If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your smile, all it takes is a quick phone call to your cosmetic dentist to get you started toward a brand-new smile. Cosmetic dentist Dr. Remaley in Roswell, GA offers a variety of cosmetic dentistry treatments to help patients make their dream smile a reality. He will perform a smile analysis in-office to customize your treatment plan to your unique desires. Below are some common treatments that can help you achieve the new and improved you.
Replace Those Missing Teeth
Missing teeth are perhaps one of the greatest hindrances. Not only do they mess with the aesthetics of your smile, but they cause selfesteem and functionality issues. To help close the gap – we recommend dental implants for their longevity and realistic results. These small posts are inserted directly into your jawbone and designed to offer superior support for a dental crown, dental bridge, or full arch denture. The number of implants required will depend on the extent of tooth loss.
Add Sparkle to Your Smile
As you get older, teeth can lose their sparkle and even discolor as a result of the foods you eat. While normal, it’s not something you have to endure for long. Mild to moderate dental stains and discoloration can be corrected with in-office professional whitening. Although over-thecounter products may help to a certain degree, they are not as effective as the treatments administered by a cosmetic dentist. At our dental office, we provide customized trays and prescription strength whitening agents that can be used together to deliver a brighter smile in a matter of days – up to several shades lighter.
Discreetly Straighten Teeth
Crooked teeth can affect teenagers and adults alike. If you have avoided correcting your smile out of fear of what bracket-and-wire braces would do for your appearance and professional life – ask your

What can laser resurfacing do for my skin?
T
he first question asked by our patients is: “What does laser resurfacing do?” Laser resurfacing technology is the goldstandard, non-surgical treatment for sunspots, fine wrinkles, large pores, old scars and tightening of the skin. Imagine reversing years of sun damage and tired skin in one single treatment when skin is resurfaced to allow for fresh new skin to form. Skin tone, skin texture, fine wrinkles and pore size all show improvement with DR. PAYMAN the first laser treatment and this is seen as early as two weeks after the skin has completed its initial healing phase. Laser resurfacing has been around for over 20 years. Technology has advanced significantly since the first days of laser resurfacing, which used to have long recovery times with invasive techniques. Fortunately, modern technology makes the procedure minimally painful with a recovery period of three-five days. Every skin type is different, and laser resurfacing is a machine that can be custom adjusted to your special skin type and concerns! The procedure destroys dull, damaged and discolored skin and makes way for “baby-soft” glowing, smooth skin. Post-laser, you may expect skin redness, swelling of the treated area and skin peeling for two weeks or more. Our office performs these procedures frequently and we are experts at making it a positive experience. Our website dermclinicmd.com has live patient testimonials and videos of the actual procedure. Our center is unique in that the office is also an AAAHC-certified surgical center that adheres to the highest standards of patient safety.
When choosing a physician, it’s important to ask about what you can expect from your procedure. If you have any questions about laser resurfacing, call us for a complimentary consultation today. All treatments are by a board-certified physician. ■

A “Traditional” Philosophy- Best wishes for the New Year! By DR. USHMA PATEL, D.M.D and DR. BRITTANY CORBETT, D.D.S Center For Advanced Dentistry
T
oday I want to talk to you about yearly traditions. As we begin the New Year, we offer you and your loved ones our very best wishes. We hope that you had a wonderful holiday season. One DR. PATEL of your New Year resolutions may be to stay healthy. A healthy mouth leads to a healthy body and overall well-being. I notice a lot of people go through their own “mini-makeovers” this time of year as well. They perform updates on their homes, make hair appointments to spruce themselves up for the New Year, and come in for teeth whitening procedures to erase coffee, tea, and wine stains and brighten up their smile. Yes, that onset of cold weather triggers a lot of DR. CORBETT activity for all of us. These reminders bring me to a question for you: What triggers your medical upkeep? Do you have certain times of the year that you plan your routine visits to your family doctor, gynecologist, and dentist? Are you reactive, only seeing a medical professional when you think something is wrong? Or do you keep a regular maintenance schedule for yourself and your family? Hopefully, the latter. It is my philosophy that preventative care is absolutely the most essential way to take charge of your health. I focus on the overall well-being of my patients and, with the help of modern

science, I can actually foresee dental issues and circumvent most of them before they become a bigger and more costly problem. Why is this important? Three reasons: • Your comfort. • Your time. • Your money. That’s right. Preventative care is first and foremost, more comfortable for patients. Heading off problems before they begin saves patients from larger dental procedures such as crowns or root canals. While medical techniques allow me to perform these procedures with a higher level of comfort liked Sedation Dentistry for my patients, most people would still prefer to avoid them altogether if possible. Crowns and root canals are more costly than preventative care, and they take more time in the office to address and fix. With just two visits per year for a typical dental patient, I can keep you in preventative mode over the course of your lifetime. We can head off problems before they start and keep more money in your wallet, increase the overall health of your body and help you spend less time at the dentist. My philosophy is simple: See me on a regular basis to avoid seeing me even more often than you’d like! What system do you have in place for preventative care? Please remember to schedule those routine appointments for you and your family before your body triggers an issue for you that could have been entirely prevented! Containing contamination to protect your family
T
he next time you need to wipe up a spill, health expert Dr. Charles Gerba, Professor of Environmental Microbiology, University of Arizona, aka "Dr. Germ," warns: don't always reach for a sponge or dishcloth. Instead, use a paper towel. That's because kitchen sponges, which he calls "bacteria cafeterias," are the No. 1 source of germs in the house. The average sponge carries nearly 5.5 trillion microscopic bugs.
When to Reach for a Paper Towel 1.
2.
3.
According to a recent study on cleaning habits, the majority of millennials reach for sponges or cloth dishtowels when cleaning surfaces that have raw meat or poultry. Dr. Gerba recommends using paper towels, especially when prepping and cleaning up raw meat and eggs. Sponges and dishtowels can instantly become contaminated after handling these foods, which may contain bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella, Dr. Gerba explains. Paper towels should also be used to help contain spills and prevent them (and subsequent germs) from spreading around the kitchen. Whether soaking up bacon grease or cleaning up oil splatters, paper towels pick up spills quickly and efficiently. For larger oil spills, cover with baking soda or salt for about 15 minutes, then pick it up with a paper towel and throw it out. When cleaning the refrigerator, dampen a paper towel with warm water and dish washing liquid and wipe down all trays, drawers, shelves and walls at least once a week. Using a sponge
4.
increases the risk of bacteria spreading around the various surfaces and shelves. When kids are in the kitchen, use paper towels to clean-up everything from spills on high chair tables to sippy cups and bibs. "This ensures germ-ridden messes get tossed right into the trash and don't linger on kids' items," adds Dr. Gerba.
When People Actually Reach for a Paper Towel
While there's been an increasing amount of studies and data showcasing the high bacterial risks associated with kitchen sponges and cloth dishtowels, a recent study on cleaning habits showed that a over half of millennials (59%) and nearly half of baby boomers (49%) reach for a sponge or cloth dishtowel when cleaning kitchen counter tops. Even more surprising, less than half of millennials think they run a risk of possible illness or food poisoning by not cleaning these kitchen durables. The truth is, sponges and cloth dishtowels become germ-infested as soon as they're first used in the kitchen. As for baby boomers, most clean their cloth dishtowels once a week, which is still not as frequent as it should be (ideally, everyday). Also, how to clean is just as important as when to clean. "Cold water washes are awful for eliminating bacteria from fabrics," says Dr. Gerba. "Washing sponges in warm water does not get rid of the bacteria unless you add bleach," he adds. So when it comes to helping keep your kitchen clean and germ-free, let a paper towel be your shield. ■

How doctors think – Insights into differential diagnosis By DR. BRENT TAYLOR
Premier Dermatology and MOHS surgery of Atlanta
H
ow does a doctor make a diagnosis? How does he or she choose which information is important? On television, it often seems likes the right diagnosis almost magically comes to a doctor. On the tv show House, the main character watches as the less experienced physicians struggle and make missteps. Then, like Sherlock Holmes, the gifted doctor notices a key point or seems to summon up a brilliant insight out of thin air. DR. TAYLOR For me, one of the more interesting topics in medicine is the process by which physicians arrive at a diagnosis. Surprisingly, multiple approaches to making a diagnosis exist, and there is considerable variation across specialties within medicine. Each approach has its pros and cons, and most physicians are likely using a hybrid approach that takes the best from each model. And thank goodness, arriving at the right diagnosis doesn’t require magic. When I was a medical student, I remember being quite impressed at one emergency medicine doctor’s emphatic insistence that all physicians should memorize the emergencies and “can’t miss” diseases that would match up with any complaint that they see. His name is Dr. Corey Slovis. He is a phenomenal teacher, and he shared with his students that there are approximately five “can’t miss” diagnoses for every “chief complaint.” For example, if a patient presents with chest pain, Dr. Slovis said that every doctor should immediately think of heart attacks, cardiac tamponade, aortic dissection, pulmonary embolism, tension pneumothorax and Boerhaave syndrome (sometimes five adds up to six). He had five emergencies or can’t miss diagnoses for almost every complaint a patient could have. He said that you couldn’t rely on consults or reading textbooks to make these diagnoses. Time was of the essence. Dr. Slovis’s approach to differential diagnosis seemed to be to rule out the emergencies, which you had to memorize in advance, then move on to the less time-sensitive diagnoses. On another rotation, a fantastic internal medicine resident shared with me his approach to differential diagnosis, summed up by the mnemonic “VINDICATE,” which stands for vascular disease, infections, 44 | northsidewoman.com | january2019
neoplasms, drugs, iatrogenic, congenital, autoimmune, trauma and endocrine disease. This resident told me that when making a diagnosis, I should consider all the options and try to run through possibilities. For example, for the smoker with a cough, could the cough be from a vascular disease such as heart attacks leading to heart failure, or an infection like pneumonia, or a neoplasm such as lung cancer, or a reaction to a drug such as an ace inhibitor, etc.,? My resident friend suggested running through the possibilities systematically and thinking of every category of disease first so as to avoid missing something important, such as lung cancer presenting as a cough. Another physician suggested thinking through each organ system (cardiovascular, pulmonary, etc.,) instead of thinking through VINDICATE when creating a list of diagnoses. Finally, a family medicine physician advised me that I should be patient and let my list of possible diseases build with time and experience. He said that the common diseases are almost always the correct ones and that with time the number of diseases that I could think of would grow. I believe that all these approaches have their merit. And each approach seemed to fit the field of the physician who espoused it. In medical school, my synthesis was that I should first try to memorize the emergencies and “can’t miss” diagnoses for as many complaints as possible. In dermatology, a “can’t miss” list for someone with a scaly rash might include cutaneous t-cell lymphoma and syphilis, for example. Second, I should let my list of common diagnoses grow with experience, and if a presentation matches perfectly, there’s rarely reason to go further. However, if someone’s presentation is atypical or doesn’t seem to add up to one of the diseases on the “can’t miss’ list or the common list, then it’s useful to think of VINDICATE or organ systems systematically and generate a list of diseases to work through before turning to textbooks, consultations or medical journals. Obviously, there is a lot more to say on this subject, but I hope that this brief synopsis of methods of differential diagnosis is interesting and though-provoking. If you or a loved one has a history of skin cancer, vein disease or any cosmetic or dermatologic complaint, please consider entrusting your skin care to board-certified and fellowship-trained Dr. Brent Taylor of Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta. ■

Make a resolution to stay socially interactive in the New Year By HOME HELPERS OF ALPHARETTA
O
ne of the most important things your older loved one can do to maintain mental, emotional, and cognitive health is to stay socially active. Studies show that regular social interaction can even improve cardiovascular health through lowered blood pressure. It’s easy to see why you should do as much as you can to help your older loved one stay socially active. Use these tips to help them discover new ways to become more involved in the community and meet new friends: • Help your older loved one find an opportunity. Talk to them about their passions and interests, then help them find a group in the community that speaks to them. Whether it’s a book club, bridge club or an art class, if it appeals to their interests it can boost their spirits and encourage involvement. Contact the local seniors center or read your local community paper to uncover opportunities. • Consider an exercise class. There are many different types of exercise that your older loved one can participate in, even if they’re disabled or chair-bound. Look for different activities that help make the most of what they’re able to do. Some gyms and personal trainers specialize in helping seniors exercise as much as they can. You might be surprised at what can still be done, and movement is critically important to staying involved and happy in the coming years. Check with their doctor to make sure you understand any important guidelines and considerations. • There are many volunteer opportunities available and, for the most part, for anything that your older loved one is interested in there is something meaningful they can do. Get them more excited about 46 | northsidewoman.com | january2019
their volunteering by asking them about it. Have them tell you about what they are doing, what it means to them, and what they want to accomplish.
