JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – An alert Johns Creek K-9 officer spotted a suspected getaway car Jan. 25 and her timely pursuit led to the suspect’s capture almost on the doorstep of Autrey Mill Middle School. The officer was answering a bank robbery call on Old Alabama Road around noon when she saw a car fitting the description of the robber pass her going the opposite direction. She did a “180” in her car and began to follow. Johns Creek Police Chief Ed Densmore said the officer saw the suspect stopped at a traffic light in front of Autrey Mill Middle School at 4110 Old Alabama Road. “He attempted to go around the cars at the intersection and wound up getting his car stuck in the ditch,” Densmore said. “The officer saw him jump out of the car and head in the direction of the school.”

The officer radioed the suspect was on foot and headed for the school parking lot. Police notified the school, which went into lockdown mode. Apparently, the new public safety radio tower that recently went into operation (see Page 14) has already paid dividends. The new radio system greatly improves the coverage area and the signal’s penetration of buildings. Quick radio response by the officer and JCPD ensured the doors were locked by the time the suspect got to the school’s door. The suspect tried to enter the building but could not gain entry. The officer arrived immediately on the scene with her K-9 dog and arrested James Stephen, 307 Ashley Lakes Drive, Peachtree Corners. According to police, the suspect entered the First Citizens Bank, 8479 Holcomb Bridge Road, Alpharetta, shortly before noon. money. The suspect then fled with an undisclosed amount of money. Just minutes later, the Johns Creek K-9 officer spotted the suspect and made the arrest. Stephen was taken to Fulton County Jail. Charges are pending at this time. Mary Eva Tredway, whose daughter goes to Autrey Mill, said the principal came over the intercom and told faculty and students that there was an intruder trying to gain access to the school and to “take appropriate action.” Tredway said she was home near the school and heard sirens, but was not concerned at the time. “Then they told everyone the man had been arrested. My daughter came home all excited and told me what happened,” Tredway said. “But I had already received an email from the school telling us what had happened. They are really good about notifying us – and yesterday was a great example.”

Can LASIK Treat Astigmatism? By Niraj Desai, M.D.

Many of us have endured that peering glare from over the reading glasses of our eye doctor as they’ve leaned forward and said , “I’m sorry, but you have aSTIGMAtism’. I am not sure about you, but the first time I heard this from my eye doctor when I was 8, I only heard ‘STIGMA’! I walked away stigmatized, I suppose - and confused wondering what visual perils lay ahead of me!

Niraj Desai, MD.

I don’t think I really understood what astigmatism was until I studied the eye in medical school. Though simple in concept, explaining astigmatism to my patients has always been a bit challenging. It always ends up being a conversation about balls - footballs and soccer balls to be specific. God forbid I had a patient from a ‘futbol’ playing background as that conversation usually ended up in a discussion about why American football is played with your hands and still called ‘foot’ball. Or, how a soccer ball is really a football in the true sense. I decided to be more of a sporting secularist and I’ve modified my conversation now to include golf balls and eggs. Everyone may not like golf, but most people like eggs! They’re both white, small and hard to confuse. Cataract/Refractive Surgeon

Though, I have had the odd golfer tell me that his astigmatism is so bad, it makes his golf ball look like an egg! But, I suppose that is the point - let me explain with the aid of some simple diagrams that don’t involve balls or eggs. The best way to understand this diagram is to follow the beam of light from left to right. As the beam of light enters the eye, it is first bent by the cornea (the window of the eye) and then by the natural lens of the eye. In the diagram, the light appears NOT to come to a sharp focus, but instead has several points where it comes to focus on to the retina (light processing tissue). If you look at the smaller eye diagram you see how light comes to a sharp focus when there is no astigmatism. When discussing astigmatism with patients, your doctor is referring to the shape of your cornea, which is the most important surface for the bending of light. A golf ball has a perfectly spherical surface. Should your cornea have a golf ball like spherical surface, you’d have zero astigmatism. Consequently, should your cornea have a surface like an egg (oval), light would be bent differently depending on where it struck the egg shape surface resulting in multiple points of focus on your retina. Practically speaking, a patient will experience blur when looking at objects when there is significant astigmatism. Life is not simple, and neither is astigmatism! There are different types of astigmatism and depending on what type you have, you may be able to correct this disorder with glasses, contact lenses, cataract surgery and LASIK.

I remain surprised at the persistence of the myth that astigmatism cannot be treated - that it is indeed a stigma for life. This may stem from the fact that in days past, severe astigmatism had limited success rates with contact lenses and laser vision correction, ie LASIK or PRK. Modern LASIK and PRK has evolved tremendously over the past decade and more. Look at the diagram above again. Your eye surgeon will first isolate the astigmatism as either coming from the cornea, lens or a combination of both. He will then typify the astigmatism as being regular or irregular. Maps of your astigmatism may resemble something like the image below. This patient has a beautiful example of ‘regular’ astigmatism - not the vertical bow tie on the top left corner. This map has a treasure trove of information that in years past was not available or understood fully. It is with the aid of sophisticated tools like the Galilei G4 Dual Scheimpflug Camera and Placido Disk Topography (a mouthful!) that your LASIK surgeon at Milan Eye Center is able to not only quantify, but qualify you for LASIK or PRK. It is important to note that not all patients qualify for laser vision correction. Astigmatism, therefore, is NOT a barrier to LASIK or PRK. You can be certain that your eye surgeon will conduct a detailed survey of your unique eye attributes before informing you whether you are a candidate or not and, perhaps, even talk about golf balls and eggs during your visit!

Enjoy the view with binoculars, not glasses. Discover LASIK.

Council balks at expedited Old Ala. price tag Roadwork could be sped up 9 months, but at $320K cost By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga.— Johns Creek could knock off the construction time to finish extensive roadwork on Old Alabama Road by nine months, ending in August instead of the May 2017 deadline. But it would cost the city too dearly, according to the City Council. The price tag to shorten the Georgia Department of Transportation project is $320,000. The money would have been paid to the contractor CW Matthews. The company would have to finish the project by Aug. 7. If it failed to meet the deadline, the company would get nothing for its efforts. The target date for completion is May 19, 2017. The roadwork causes a considerable amount of traffic congestion and has caused more consternation as motorists cut through other neighborhoods to avoid the Old Alabama-Medlock Bridge Road intersection. Two City Council members admitted they cut through the Thornhill subdivision to avoid congestion. The council had asked Public Works

Director Tom Black to see what it would cost to expedite the construction of a half-mile section of road between Medlock Bridge and Buice roads. The contract is let by GDOT, so it is the middleman in the negotiations. Black said the project has already had problems. The contract had been set for an October completion date, but CW Mathews got an extension through May 2017 because of unforeseen problems with the soil. But apparently the company can make a lot of those delays go away for an incentive payment of $320,000. “But it’s an all-or-none deal. They miss the deadline, they get nothing,” Black said. Councilman Bob Gray wanted to know how the company could speed up the work by so many months. “It seems too good to be true,” he said. Black said the company does a lot of business with GDOT and it can pull resources off other projects to accelerate the deadline for their price. Mayor Mike Bodker said that is the problem with GDOT contracts. “They pay too much attention to the low bidder and then just shrug when they can’t complete the job on time,” Bodker said. “So then it becomes a bidding process over those who can afford to expedite a project and those who can’t.

[GDOT pays] too much attention to the low bidder and then just shrug when they can’t complete the job on time.” MIKE BODKER Johns Creek mayor “GDOT allows poor performance in return for the low bid.” Gray said he could not support a $320,000 incentive and Councilman Steve Broadbent agreed. No one offered a motion so no action was taken on the report. In other council action: • A deferral was granted to Piedmont Atlantic Capital LLC, which is trying to get two parcels approved for a self-storage facility at 11220 Medlock Bridge Road. This is the second deferral, but the applicant requested additional time because the city staff did not like the building design. It will come back to the council Feb. 22.

Mike Dudgeon, R-Johns Creek / South Forsyth, announced Jan. 25 he will not run for reelection in 2016. “I really hate to leave the Georgia House, but the reality is that my business commitments no longer give me enough time to serve,” Dudgeon said. “In the private sector I am the Chief Technology Officer for Hirez Studios in Alpharetta, and we are now in full high tech growth company mode. FAST charter school to open in August in Roswell 7-acre campus to teach 600 students grades K-8 By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. — After a whirlwind year spent on logistics and planning, the Fulton Academy of Science and Technology charter school received final approval this month from the State Board of Education, and is preparing to open in August for the 2016-17 school year. The K-8 school will be located in Roswell, on a 7-acre campus off Crabapple Road which most recently served as a church. The building includes preschool and adult classrooms, so organizers are confident the building will be ready for up to 600 students and 40 staff members by July. “We’re planning to build in multiple phases,” explained Phillip Chen, who helped lead the efforts to open FAST. “The first phase is renovation of the existing buildings to suit our needs for classrooms and labs. The next phases will be to build additional

buildings.” FAST’s curriculum will focus on science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and prepare children to be creative innovators and problem solvers, he added. Chen said the state approval, which followed approval by the Fulton County Board of Education in August, is not the end of the process, but rather the beginning. “Getting the state’s approval cleared another milestone,” said Chen. “But truly, regarding the finish line, we are just getting started because we’ve only gotten permission to enter the race.” Already 300 children have registered for FAST, said Chen, and he expects the school to reach its capacity of 600 by the Feb. 12 application deadline. The school will open with grades K-7, with eighth grade opening in the second year. If applications exceed capacity, the school will conduct a lottery on Feb. 13 for available seats. FAST

is a public school which operates under a renewable charter through the Fulton County Board of Education. It is tuition free and open to all students who live in Fulton County. In addition to renovations, FAST organizers will be hiring staff over the next few months, including 40 teachers, paraprofessionals and the school’s principal. “Getting the school leadership position correct may be one of the most difficult components in a successful launch,” said Chen. “[They] must have successfully launched a charter school, have elementary and middle school leadership experience [and] understand the goals of FAST in terms of [innovative instruction].” Many of the FAST students will likely be former students at the Fulton Sunshine Academy elementary charter school. That school shuttered in June 2015 after its charter renewal was denied by Fulton Schools. Distraught parents banded together to open FAST to continue the academic gains, but free of the governance board

OPINION

Star Wars: Hollywood’s walk on the safe side Spoiler alert: This is a candid review of that cultural phenomenon known as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” so if you haven’t seen it yet, and you want to be totally surprised, then don’t read any farther. Han Solo dies. See, I told you not to read any farther. Not to worry, though. This is Hollywood and anything or anybody can be resurrected – including an entire movie. Just wait HATCHER HURD and see. Executive Editor hatcher@appenmediagroup.com Having two grandsons can mean you have to repeat yourself. Take the latest “Star Wars” film. I saw it with one grandson, so naturally I had to take the other. That caused a bit of row because Grandson Chase said it wasn’t fair because Grandson Tripp got to go twice. Well, life is unfair. But seeing that “Star Wars” in now in its seventh incarnation, I am moved to comment about it. First let me say I fell in love with “Star Wars” in 1977. I was a Trekkie in the 1960s, and a sci-fi buff since I read my first Robert Heinlein novel in the seventh grade. The first three installments that came out were great fun, full of cutting-edge special effects, loopy humor and an homage to the great early sci-fi serials such as “Flash Gordon.” Then came the long-awaited prequels (for future clarification and my sanity, when I refer to “Star Wars” films, I will use the chronology of when they were released, not the dorky episode numbers used in the “Star Wars” conceit). I was not moved to see them be-

cause what I had heard about the films sounded turgid and boring. The original “Star Wars” trilogy was enough for me. But this new movie did intrigue me. First, from the movie trailers I saw a “Star Wars” landscape I was familiar with. The old Storm Troopers were back along with a touch of the panache and puckish humor that graced the originals. But Hollywood is first and foremost a business. So when Disney bought the “Star Wars” franchise in 2012 for $4 billion, you knew Jar Jar Binks would be nowhere to be seen. Sure enough, the latest “Star Wars” film was chock full of visual and plot cues to know this was going to faithfully follow the original “Star Wars” plot. It was so faithful that it is almost indistinguishable from the first one. For the logic of this I will recommend to you the most excellent book about the film industry, especially the cut-throat business side of it, by William Goldman. His “Adventures in the Screen Trade” gives a somewhat jaundiced account of how Hollywood works. Goldman’s first and foremost rule for Hollywood is always repeat what worked before. Originality is not bankable. That is why when small, original movies hit it big, the sequels are spit out like watermelon seeds. Think of “Rocky,” now translated into its seventh iteration, or a particular favorite of mine, “The Magnificent Seven,” which produced three sequels and a TV series – and was itself a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai.” Other examples abound – “Lethal Weapon” and “Die Hard” are but two more. So, given the $4 billion investment, it is little wonder that almost every plot line in the origin of the franchise shows up in Disney’s version. Billed as the next installment it is really the same installment with a

Goldman’s first and foremost rule for Hollywood is always repeat what worked before. Originality is not bankable. That is why when small, original movies hit it big, the sequels are spit out like watermelon seeds.

new paint job. The George Lucas original begins with the young protagonist on a desert planet, raised by foster parents, and he is drawn into a “big adventure” when he meets a cuddly robot. The Disney version is much different. A young protagonist living on an arid planet, who is waiting for her parents to come back for her, meets a cuddly robot that draws her into a big adventure. So the protagonist is a girl – big, big difference. The villains in the Lucas version use warriors in white armor and fly space fighters that swarm like bees. In the Disney version the villains use warriors in slightly more sleek white armor but the same fighters that swarm like bees. So in version 1, we have Luke, and in version 2 we have Rey, but I call “Lucille” and likewise we have Darth Vader in the Lucas version and, oh, let’s call him Li’l Darth because he is the grandson of Darth. And although Li’l Darth is a perfectly formed human, he still wears the black armor and helmet of Darth and uses a voice speaker that makes him talk like Darth. But our little Lucille goes on to meet Han Solo – yes, the Han who would also raid lost arks – so that we cannot mistake this for anything other than the true sequel to the Lucas epic. Princess Leia is there, only now she is General Leia – a more feminist role, certainly. Now the plot in Lucas’ “Star Wars” is the evil Galactic Empire which has a Death Star (a weapon as big as a moon, so you know it’s bad) which is going to destroy the planet that is home to The

Rebels. Again, the plot is much different in the new version. It’s the evil First Order 30 years later, which has arisen to challenge Leia’s people (who are still called The Rebels, I suppose for continuity). They have a new Death Star, which is three times the size of the old one. But somehow there is still one Achilles heel that, if hit, will destroy the whole thing. So guess what happens? Right in one. Now just to make sure we are snug in our “Star Wars” cocoon, we meet original cast members Harrison Ford (Han) and Carrie Fisher (Leia) with a cameo by Mark Hamill (Luke). Then R2D2 and C-3PO show up along with the Wookiee (Chewbacca). In this version Chewbacca gets all the best lines. So there you have it. Disney did not run out a sequel to “Star Wars.” They simply did a remake. And with a $4 billion franchise to protect, should we have expected anything else? Of course not. We want our old characters back. We want Han Solo skirting trouble with unsavory types he’s skinned in some deal. We want C-3PO and R2-D2 trading barbs. We like walking into another Star Bar that echoes Rick s Café Americain in Casablanca. We want to recapture that old warm and fuzzy feeling for that world Lucas created. So why did they kill off Harrison Ford at the end of this move? Well, death is only permanent outside of Hollywood. Inside, anything is possible, especially resurrection.

Transportation projects list joins neighboring projects By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Johns Creek City Council voted unanimously to pony up $34,000 for its transportation projects to be pooled with the other North Fulton cities for consideration should a Transportation Special Local Option Sales Tax be approved by voters in November. Fulton County is considering a T-SPLOST, which would fund projects proposed by the county government and participating municipal governments. If passed, there would be a heavy emphasis on improving economic development, mobility and safety. The ultimate goal is to make the county and local cities more competitive in attracting industry, thus relieving the tax burden on residential development. It also creates other opportunities to leverage local T-SPLOST funds with federal and state dollars to bring even more needed projects to the county. It is not clear MIKE BODKER yet whether the Johns Creek mayor T-SPLOST would be a full 1 percent tax or some fraction of 1 percent, or whether MARTA would get a slice of the T-SPLOST as well. But the City Council was convinced of the merits of contributing to the study, which will pool the transportation plans of North Fulton cities because it creates a unified transportation plan for all of North Fulton.

Councilman J Johns Creek Councilman Jay Lin, the first Fulton Superior Court Judge Christopher Bra “This will be useful for us whether the T-SPLOST happens or not because we want any of our transportation projects to meld with our other cities. Even though most of our needs force us to deal with Gwinnett and Forsyth,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. While many details are not set, many are coalescing. It seems clear the split of a Fulton T-SPLOST will be based on a city’s population. If MARTA does get a slice of the pie, it would take legislative action in the General Assembly that would allow it to sell bonds for decades into the future. That is not popular with several of the cities, but the traffic study is worth the effort for other reasons. Johns Creek City Manager Warren Hutmacher said the engineering firm Kimlee Horn will “match up” road projects so they are uniform across

How the T-SPLOST would work A Transportation SPLOST is simply a sales tax where the capital outlays are intended for transportation purposes only. Assuming the maximum special district sales rate of 1 percent is leveraged for five years, Fulton County and its municipalities will generate approximately $1.2 billion from 2017-2021, according to the Atlanta Regional Commission. If the T-SPLOST is adopted: • The actual tax will last five years. • Project construction may extend beyond this five-year period. • The North Fulton County elected city officials would like to prepare a project list for the T-SPLOST program that supports a local city’s transportation needs as well as regional needs. • The list must be compiled expeditiously and adopted by each of the North Fulton County cities so it can be shared with other Fulton County municipalities for a completed plan.

jurisdictions. That makes it attractive to the Georgia Department of Transportation in that it can bid entire projects seamlessly. These projects also come with local funding – “skin in the game” – which makes them more appealing to GDOT as well as for federal transportation dollars. Each of the five North Fulton cities are paying for a comprehensive transportation plan of North Fulton based on a per capita basis. Thus Johns Creek’s

share is $34,000. Each of the cities contributes their own transportation plans already on the shelf. What the cities are paying for is to have these plans dovetail in a coherent fashion that GDOT can then use to apply for federal funding as well. If the T-SPLOST is not adopted, the cities still have their projects in a GDOT-digestible form, which can still be pursued through other funding sources.

A new Johns Creek public safety communications tower located nearby in Forsyth County is now operational, ensuring comprehensive radio coverage for police and firefighters throughout the city.

Public safety radio tower powers up JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The new Johns Creek public safety communications tower erected in Forsyth County is now operational, allowing greater comprehensive radio coverage for police and firefighters throughout the city. The new 195-foot tower eliminates gaps in coverage and allows emergency personnel to communicate while in buildings in northeast Johns Creek. The uninterrupted coverage provides better protection for public safety personnel and residents in the Shakerag community. “This was a critical safety issue for our police, fire and emergency medical personnel and for our residents in the northeast part of the city,” said Mayor Mike Bodker. “Our staff did a great job of finding an alternative location for the tower and we appreciate Forsyth County working with us to make this happen.” The city put the tower on a site just inside Forsyth County near Old Atlanta Road that already has two towers on it. The city had been using a single Fulton County Public Safety communication tower at Jones Bridge and Morton roads but it lacked the strength and height to provide all of Johns Creek optimum service for first responders. This new location – which is slightly higher than surrounding terrain – and the tower’s stronger signal correct the deficits of the Jones Bridge tower. The new tower is part of a countywide system upgrade by Fulton County to repair and improve its aging public safety communications network. Fulton

replaced the equipment on the Jones Bridge tower and installed the equipment on the city’s new tower. In June 2014 the city had proposed a plan to erect a 400-foot tower near State Bridge and Medlock Bridge roads in an effort to cover the entire city with one tower. However, after receiving community input, the city embarked on a seven-month search for a better location. It evaluated multiple sites in Johns Creek and in Forsyth County but rejected them for various reasons, such as poor signal quality, cost and undesirable locations. The construction of the communications tower in Forsyth County allows Forsyth to use the tower to improve its own public safety communications as well, including the use of a tornado siren. Forsyth is also in a position to allow private telecommunications providers to use the tower and will share the fees with Johns Creek.

To influence people, you have to be able to listen to what they want. MAGGIE DECAN, HoneyBaked Ham President and COO

HoneyBaked Ham COO didn’t follow traditional path to top 2015 Most Powerful & Influential Woman rises from HR department to top leadership role By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ALPHARETTA, Ga. – Maggie DeCan, HoneyBaked Ham president and chief operating officer, admits that coming up through the human resources department is not your “traditional line of march” to where she is now. But for her it was the perfect course. DeCan topped off 2015 with the Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award from The National Diversity Council at its annual Leadership Conference at the Midtown Crown Plaza in Atlanta. Who knew she would take the tools given her to craft a successful path to the top. “I got out in the world in the mid’80s and went to work for Macy’s in executive retail training and went into HR,” DeCan said. “Thirteen years ago I became chief of human resources at HoneyBaked Ham. “Six years ago the boss said, ‘You know operations.’ And I was on my way.” Today, DeCan is responsible for $500 million in sales in the more than 400 franchise and company-owned locations nationwide as well as e-commerce sales. Under her leadership, HoneyBaked sales and profitability have grown for all lines of its business, nearly doubling sales over the last five years. She recently guided the company through a consolidation of all U.S. operations within a new Alpharetta national headquarters. Stores have

been remodeled, and DeCan has led the company’s foray into the Japanese market. All this is from an HR expert? DeCan says why not? Human resources provided the best background for leadership, and for good reasons, she said. “People are your best resource. HR teaches you good communication skills, listening and how to influence people,” she said. “To influence people, you have to be able to listen to what they want.” Macy’s, Belk and Circuit City were all growing companies when DeCan left each one as she climbed the corporate ladder. But while those companies were assessing her, she was assessing them. She found the fit she was looking for at HoneyBaked, which she credits for her opportunity. It’s not every place that would recognize her qualities but she allows the family-owned company is different. “It is female dominated. It is consumer based. And it is values driven,” she said. And when DeCan says core values, she says it’s not just a slogan stuck on the walls or on the business cards. “It’s what is in our hearts,” she said. That means getting involved with the community with such organizations as MUST Ministries and North Fulton Community Charities. “We’re a food company. So our niche is feeding people,” she said. The company is family-owned and majority female so the ownership is not particularly surprised to find leaders among the women executives.

“Having the day-today operations handled by women is the norm here,” she said. “And I think it is good for the consumer.” HoneyBaked has a somewhat unique marketing requirement also. At this company DECAN you have to be focused on your market. The ham business is seasonal with Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter the big events. “So we do 60 percent of our business in 30 days out of the year. We’re a midsized company, not huge,” she said. There isn’t room for error in such a short-time retail environment. “So our strategies have three- and five-year plans, not quarterly adjustments,” she said. The company is always thinking strategically. But it always starts by looking at its core customers. Who are they? The great majority are made up of families, so the company’s core values and strategic goals are to be involved in the communities they serve in ways that address family issues. A program developed by HoneyBaked Ham, Children’s Hour at the Table, is a direct result of that. The company gives a free 1-pound package of ham or turkey for signing a CHAT contract to provide stronger family ties by eating more meals together to promote familial togetherness and using the time for parents to engage their children in positive conversations. “The idea is to turn off TV and all digital media and talk,” she said. “How many T:\ADS_2015\NFAYP families do that in this day and age?”

Georgia Diversity Council honors DeCan Given Most Powerful & Influential Woman Award ATLANTA, Ga. – Maggie DeCan, president and chief operating officer of HoneyBaked Ham, was honored with the 2015 Most Powerful and Influential Woman Award from The National Diversity Council in November at its annual Leadership Conference at the Midtown Crown Plaza in Atlanta. DeCan also gave the keynote address on the importance of vulnerability and authenticity in leadership, and the benefits of a values-driven work culture. The award recognized DeCan’s ability to make a difference through her leadership, achievements and ability to excel in her field. The achievements recognized include generating results, improving revenue and profitability, affecting the direction of her organization and making a difference in the community. The Georgia Diversity Council is a nonprofit organization that campaigns for diversity and inclusion throughout Georgia in education, businesses and communities. DeCan was recognized by her peers including SunTrust Bank, The Honey Baked Ham Company, The Coca-Cola Company, Bank of America, The Home Depot, Georgia Pacific, Cap Gemini, NCR Corp., Graphic Packaging International, Popeye’s and the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

Forsyth has record low unemployment rates By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Forsyth County’s unemployment rate has hit a record low. According to the most recent data from the Georgia Department of Labor on county labor force estimates from November 2015, Forsyth has a labor force of 98,921 with 95,012 employed. That equates to 3,909 unemployed, or 4.0 percent. “Forsyth County’s low unemployment rate reflects the overall downward

trend as the U.S. economy continues to improve,” said Robert Long, vice president of economic development for the Cumming-Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce. “It also reflects our skilled workforce. The high educational attainment of our citizens increases job security and makes it easier for them to find work if they are displaced.” In September 2015, Forsyth had a 4.3 percent unemployment rate. A year earlier, in November 2014, Forsyth stood at a labor force of 97,904 with 93,296 employed and 4,608 unemployed, or 4.7 percent.

Surrounding counties had unemployment rates of 5.2 percent (Fulton), 4.5 percent (Dawson), 4.2 percent (Hall), 4.0 percent (Cherokee), 4.6 percent (Pickens), 4.6 percent (Gwinnett) and 5.2 percent (DeKalb). Georgia’s county with the highest unemployed rate is Hancock at 10 percent, and the lowest is Oconee at 3.7 percent. The overall Georgia unemployment rate is 5.6 percent for November 2015, down from 6.7 percent in November 2014. The state job growth rate of 2.2 percent is higher than the national average, which is 1.9 percent.

Roswell company makes offer for American Apparel Hagan Capital backs former CEO By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – A Roswell investor group has made a bid to buy troubled Delaware-based American Apparel. The Hagan Capital Group, and managing partner Chad Hagan, offered $300 million as part of a coalition of companies offering to buy the beleaguered clothing company. Hagan Capital Group has partnered with Silver Creek Capital Partners with a combined value of $2.4 billion for the bid. “We have a tiny but deep network of other global like-minded family offices,” Hagan said of the coalition. Hagan said most of his experience with turnarounds and takeovers has

been in the health care industry. He said the group’s first bid of $200 million was rejected by the board of American Apparel. It was then upped to $300 million. The board has its own debt restructuring plan, which is being considered by a judge. American Apparel filed for bankruptcy protection in October after 2015 saw declines in sales of more than 15 percent and a decrease in gross profit of 29 percent. In documents supplied by Hagan, the companies believe the bid can keep American Apparel operating and viable, helping its stakeholders and up to 10,000 employees. Part of the bid includes bringing back former executives with the company, including ousted CEO Dov Charney. Charney, the company founder, was fired in 2014 over allegations of financial mismanagement and violating a sexual-harassment policy. The new in-

vestors claim the charges were trumped up to remove Charney as part of an orchestrated plan against him. The documents claim these executives – including Charney - “are ready to lead the company towards a smooth transition under our ownership and back to its prior growth trajectory.” The documents refer to the period before Charney left the company in 2014. Hagan and the bidders suggest the company’s lagging sales are a direct result of Charney leaving and, with him, many top executives who all had in -depth knowledge of the company. Forsyth’s Kissin’ Bridge What did the Georgia landscape look like 100 years ago? It would have been very different from what we see today, and one difference would have been the large number of covered STEVE HUDSON bridges. Get Outside Georgia, Chattahoochee Media Group Why were they covered? Maybe because horses and mules didn’t like crossing “open” bridges. Maybe to protect the substructure from the weather. Or maybe (and this is my favorite) to provide … well … a little privacy for young couples out for an afternoon stroll. In that roll they worked pretty well. I can affirm that, possibly from personal experience. These days, few of Georgia’s covered bridges remain. But one that does is Poole’s Mill Bridge, centerpiece of Poole’s Mill Bridge Park just up the road in Forsyth County. Whether you’re looking for something different to do with the kids or just want to touch a piece of history, this is a park you don’t want to miss. The bridge is on land where, in the early 1820s, Cherokee chief George Welch operated a grist mill. After the Cherokee were forcibly removed following the discovery of Georgia gold, the land went through several owners and was eventually acquired by Dr. M. L. Pool, who added a cotton gin in 1920. But the area’s economy was changing. In 1947 the mill was abandoned and soon fell into disrepair. It burned in 1959. What about the bridge? The first bridge at the site was an uncovered bridge which washed away in 1899. It was replaced by a new structure – a 96-foot-long covered bridge – in 1901. Built in what’s called the lattice truss style, that new bridge relied on wooden pegs called trunnels to hold

everything together. The lumber was drilled on-site for those pegs, but builders soon discovered that the holes were in the wrong places. Some say that the man who incorrectly drilled them quickly left the area, taking with him a gallon of corn whiskey! That’s a great story. It may even be true. But in any case the holes were soon re-drilled (under the watchful eye of a new and presumably more focused supervisor) and the bridge was eventually finished. You can still see the incorrectly drilled holes in the bridge today. The bridge stood for many years, though it eventually began to show its age. It might have disappeared altogether but for a restoration effort in the 1990s which saved the bridge and also led to acquisition of the surrounding property for creation of what’s now Poole’s Mill Park. Today, the bridge is on the National Register of Historic Places. Poole’s Mill Park is an inviting place. You’ll find a children’s playground, swings, short walking trails and picnic tables (with grills) near the creek. There’s also a large covered picnic pavilion, with restroom facilities, which can be reserved by contacting Forsyth County Parks & Recreation. During warm months you may see folks fishing in the creek – and you’ll certainly see kids of all ages enjoying the well-known sliding rocks located within the park just downstream from the bridge. Poole’ Mill Park is located at 7725 Pooles Mill Road, Ball Ground. From Ga. 400, take Ga. 2 west to Heardsville Road. Go right (north) on Heardsville Road for about one mile to Pooles Mill Road, on your right. The park is at the corner of Poole’s Mill Road and Heardsville Road. Steve Hudson has written numerous books on fishing, hiking, the outdoors and more. Check them out at www.chattahoocheemedia.com.

Innovative hair restoration By Dr. Daniel Danyo Hair transplantation and modern hair restoration techniques are becoming more mainstream and the public’s interest about it is exploding. Just ask Brian Urlacher, former linebacker of the Chicago Bears who used to be the epitome of a man bearing a cleanly-shaven head. Wait a minute, did I just write the words “used to be.” Indeed, because last month he revealed to the world a new look - a full head of his own permanent hair. Months prior to that, Brian had undergone hair transplantation. The TV and social media went wild. So what made a man that was so epitomized by the look of his shaved head choose to undergo hair transplantation. Better yet, why was there so much media attention and chatter on social websites discussing his dramatic change. Well, without sounding too much like a cliché - with modern day hair restoration techniques performed on many, the possible is now a reality. Brian’s desire to have hair transplantation to reverse his severe hair loss was directly related to the reality of an amazing transformation. The public did not view this transformation with shame, but applauded the results. The hair restoration industry for the

past several years has undergone dramatic change and innovation. Apart from hair transplantation, Stem Cell activation therapies such as platelet rich plasma injection therapy offer more options to restore one’s DANYO hair. Modern techniques do not give the appearance of visible plugs or doll’s hair - we now transplant single hairs or follicle groupings which deliver a natural result. Though I did not do Brian’s hair transplantation, I have been privileged to work on similar individuals, who experienced similar results. I am the sole owner and physician at North Atlanta Hair Restoration. I believe that getting the best results requires using the most up-to-date techniques. I also recognize that my patient’s desire reasonable prices, quick recovery, concealment that a procedure was completed, the possibility to do large/multiple cases and multiple options. We strive to offer this to all of our patients and more. Go to our website at www.nahairrestoration.com or book a free consultation with me by calling 678-845-7521.

Hearing with your brain? By Dr. Deborah Woodward Johns Creek Audiology Hearing affects EVERYTHING between your ears. If you’re like most people, you’re used to thinking of hearing as something that happens in your ears. What people often don’t think about is what happens between their ears, in the hearing part of their brain. That’s where sound becomes information that has meaning. Your brain has to work hard to make this happen. When the sound signals from your ears are compromised, your brain has to work even harder to fill in the gaps. This extra effort can take its toll. In fact, studies have shown that, over time, hearing loss can lead to isolation and depression. That’s why it makes sense to take care of your hearing health the same way you care about the rest of your health: There’s a lot more riding on it than just your hearing. What happens when you have a hearing challenge? The natural relationship between your ears and brain is disrupted. This

is why it takes so much more effort to follow what is being said and why you may feel so much more tired at the end of a busy day. It’s your brain that hears - Not your ears. Your ears and your brain work together as a system, with your brain doing most of the heavy lifting. Give your brain exactly what it

By Amy Ledbetter, Au.D. Every New Year, Americans across the nation resolve to lose weight, be healthier. Those goals have been proven even more important than you may think. Certain medical conditions and lifestyle choices may lead LEDBETTER to higher instances for hearing loss. A proven link has been discovered with people suffering from obesity that also experience hearing issues. Hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition affecting around 10 percent of the U.S. population (BHI, 2004). American estimates find that up to a third of women in their 50s and twothirds of women in their 60s suffer from some degree of hearing loss (Curhan, et al., 2013). Hearing loss can have an impact on communication and social interaction, as well as mental well-being and overall quality of life. Obesity and its comorbidities, which include cardiovascular disease, diabetes and hypertension, may be related to the development of hearing loss. In recent studies, higher body mass index (BMI) and larger waist circumference have been associated with poorer hearing thresholds (Curhan, et al., 2013). A 2013 study examined the relationship between BMI, physical activity and self-reported hearing loss in almost 69,000 women over a period of 20 years. The conclusion: higher BMI and larger waist circumference are associated with increased risk of hearing

Good joints seen as key link in healthy aging (NAPSI)—Exercise has been identified as a key component of aging gracefully, and has been linked with not only improved physical health but also better cognitive performance. The maintenance of fully functioning joints is an important part of enabling active seniors to participate in health-promoting athletic activity, experts agree. Seniors today are working longer, traveling more and anticipate remaining active longer into life than their predecessors did. With more than 14 percent of the U.S. population at least 65 years old, it's no surprise that a Google search on "healthy aging" yields more than 18 million results. The National Institutes of Health, a national body that funds research and sets policy, has this to say about exercise for older people: "Being physically active can also help you stay strong and fit enough to keep doing the things you like to do as you get older. Making exercise and physical activity a regular part of your life can improve your health and help you maintain your independence as you age." Losing the ability to exercise can have grave consequences, the NIH warns. "Lack of physical activity also can lead to more visits to the doctor,

more hospitalizations, and more use of medicines for a variety of illnesses," the NIH said. Exercise can prevent or delay disease, help to manage stress and improve mood, and can help support a healthy and intellectually vibrant old age. Recent research from Finland involving more than 5,000 subjects suggests that participating in leisure time physical activity earlier in life promotes mobility in old age. Another smaller-scale study suggests that resistance training, which would naturally tend to place more stress on the joints, helps support healthy cognition among older adults better than do more gentle activities. Given that today's seniors are staying active longer, and understand very well that mobility is linked to retaining independence, it's not a surprise that joint health is consistently one of the top selling categories of dietary supplements, with glucosamine and chondroitin combinations leading the pack. Glucosamine, an amino acid that the body produces naturally, is part of the process to form and repair cartilage. It is thought that consuming glucosamine, which is usually made

from shrimp shells, may increase new cartilage formation by providing the necessary building blocks. The usual dose is 1,000 mg each day for one to two months. Studies on the effectiveness of glucosamine are inconclusive at this point. The science on chondroitin is more encouraging, however, if it is taken in the right amounts. Chondroitin, a nutrient extracted from cow, pork or bird cartilage, is one of the main substances responsible for cartilage resiliency, and also plays a major role in blocking the reactions that break down cartilage over time. In Januaryy 2015, the Cochrane Collaboration Review on "Chondroitin for Osteoarthritis" reviewed 43 randomized controlled trials involving over 9,000 people. It found that chondroitin, alone or in combination with glucosamine, was better than placebo in improving pain in participants with osteoarthritis and "there was statistically significant less reduction in minimal joint space width with chondroitin compared to placebo groups." Other large-scale studies have also had fairly positive results. Not all supplements are created equal, however. The Food and Drug Administration regulates dietary supple-

ments according to safety, and removes potentially harmful products from the market. But the FDA does not assess the health benefits of supplements as it does for drugs, making it incumbent on consumers to educate themselves on dosage levels and ingredient quality issues to find supplements that give the best results. With chondroitin supplements, for example, the benefit appears to be linked to dose and ingredient quality. Dr. Nicola Volpi of University of Modena, Italy noted that chondroitin quality affects therapeutic utility. Results may vary according to the grade of chondroitin used as well as serving size; underdosing is thought to negatively affect outcomes. Most clinical studies that support chondroitin efficacy used daily serving sizes ranging between 800mg and 1,200mg. Jana Hildreth, a noted expert on chondroitin purity and director of scientific affairs for Synutra Pure, Ltd., said "chondroitin is an expensive ingredient, so some companies add less to reduce cost. It's important to take that into account when shopping for a chondroitin supplement." Synutra Pure offers tips for selecting quality supplements at www.synutrapure.com.

Ga. Ensemble Theatre honors Peter Abreu Abreu Family Trust makes donation for new theater sound system By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – The late Peter Abreu had always been a good friend and supporter of the Georgia Ensemble Theater in Roswell. In 2015, the Abreu Family Trust honored his devotion to GET by making a donation in his name that made the theater’s new sound system possible, and GET showed its thanks with a memorial plaque in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. For years the Cultural Arts Center had needed an acoustical update, but the city budget could never quite manage it. In 2015 the city and the Abreu Trust made it happen. At the debut of GET’s “Charley’s Aunt,” GET co-founders Robert Farley and Anita Allen-Farley took the opportunity to publicly remember Abreu’s unstinting support of the theater and the Abreu Trust’s stepping up to take the theater sound system into the 21st century. Farley recalled walking into what was then called the Roswell Auditorium to ask about possibly starting a theater there.

asked him if this is where the theater would be, and he said yes,” Robert Far-

ley said. “He quickly introduced me to Barbara Lovatt, Helen Owen and Garry Waddell, who would all be GET board members.” That was the beginning of the Farleys’ beautiful friendship with the city of Roswell and Peter Abreu in particular. Abreu’s daughter, Claire Abreu Webber, said this gift of the theater sound system was truly a gift from her father. “The last time Dad came to see a play here, he said, ‘It sure was a great show, but I couldn’t hear anything,’” said Webber. “We wanted to fix that.” Writing half the check, however, was the city of Roswell. So Mayor Jere Wood was on hand also to thank the Abreu Trust for the family’s assistance. “I’m just sorry it took so long for this to get done,” Wood said. “It is difficult even in good times to stretch the budget as far as we would like. I would like to thank the generosity of Peter Abreu and the Abreu Trust.” Farley said the gift was sorely needed and is greatly appreciated. “We miss Peter, and this is just another reason why. He was a great friend to us personally and to GET,” he said. “The plaque will hang here in a place of honor.”

‘Beauty and The Beast’ a treat at Roswell Cultural Arts Center Showstoppers Youth Theater brings fairy tale musically alive

If you go What: Roswell Showstoppers presents “Beauty and The Beast” Where: Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forest St., 30075 When: Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, Jan. 30, 2 p.m. & 7 p.m. More info: 770-594-6232

By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – The Roswell Showstoppers will present “Beauty and The Beast” at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center featuring a huge cast and some talented singers. Three shows are planned for Friday, Jan. 29, at 7 p.m. and two shows Saturday, Jan.30, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Showstoppers Artistic Director Leslie Kelley said the youth theater group will feature 24 players, all from third grade through ninth. Showstoppers is a program of the Roswell Recreation and Parks Department. “We auditioned all of the parts. These kids have been great. But the biggest thing is that this is true musical theater,” Kelley said. “All of these kids sing, dance and act.” To get ready, the cast took dance lessons once a week, and rehearsed two times a week since September to get their roles down perfectly.

Even inanimate objects are characters in this Disney production. Heading the cast are Morgan Lanzo, a Milton freshman who plays Beauty, and Rex Rickson, an eighth-grader at Elkins Middle School, who plays The Beast. “The play they are doing is great.

HATCHER HURD/STAFF

But the ultimate goal is for these youngsters to learn as much as possible about true musical theater in its three disciplines – singing, dancing and acting,” she said. “All three are weighted the same.”

Kelley and Managing Director Nancy Whitehead have worked hard to prepare the cast for what is a demanding ensemble piece of theater. “The talent this year is really great,” Kelley said. “They are ready for an audience.” As is the case in most young people’s theater, it falls to the parents and volunteers to make the costumes and props and paint the scenery. Everything has been “built from scratch,” said Kelley, except for some of the more elaborate gowns, which are rented. The play is the Disney version and runs 90 minutes. This is the third year for Showstoppers to appear on the main stage at the Roswell Arts Center. Last year’s production was “The Little Mermaid.”

West Forsyth downs Centennial in makeup game Wolverines’ Staiti leads scoring with 25 points By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com

JOE PARKER

Centennial’s Brianna Perry (11) defends West’s Jane Ortlip.

ROSWELL, Ga. – West Forsyth (16-4, 13-1) continued their success in region play with a 47-40 victory over Centennial on Monday. Meanwhile, the loss for Centennial (10-12, 6-8) puts them in an uphill battle for a playoff spot with just four games remaining. West Forsyth senior and Maryland commit Jenna Staiti led both teams in scoring with 25 points. Staiti battled with Centennial senior Grace Morrow for the duration of the game, who finished the game with five blocks, but Staiti was able to use her 6-foot-6 frame to stand tall under the basket. Staiti compiled nine rebounds, two steals and four blocks in addition to leading all players in scoring. Senior Jane Ortlip added 18 points for the Wolverines, shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc and 4-4 from the freethrow line. Centennial sophomore Shekinah Guthrie had a standout game for the

Lady Knights with a double-double. Guthrie finished the game with 22 points, 16 rebounds, two steals and a block. After the first quarter, Centennial led 12-10 before West claimed their first lead of the game with a 14-4 run to open the second quarter. West outscored Centennial 19-9 in the second to take a 29-21 lead into halftime. Coming out of the locker room, Centennial began to up their offensive tempo and cut into the lead in the process. The Lady Knights were also able to limit passes intended for Staiti under the net, cutting the Wolverines’ lead to 4 entering the fourth quarter. Two straight steals from Centennial’s Morrow, followed by two Centennial forced jump balls, gave the Lady Knights a chance to claim their first lead since early in the second quarter. However, Centennial would be unable to take advantage and settled for a single field goal. After two West field goals, a Morrow layup and 3-pointer from Brianna Perry cut the West lead to 39-38 with 2:40 remaining in the game. With Centennial fans and players feeling the momentum shift late in the

game, emotions ran high and resulted in a technical foul. With Morrow and Staiti fighting for a rebound, a jump ball was called and Morrow, visibly upset, threw the ball at Staiti and hit her. Morrow was called for a technical foul and Staiti would make both free throws. Staiti was 6-8 on free throws in the game. Perry missed a 3-pointer, and Staiti was able to get a layup in transition to give the Wolverines a 5-point lead with just over a minute remaining. On Centennial’s ensuing possession, the Lady Knights would turn the ball over and were forced to foul. Staiti would be fouled twice and made all four free throws to seal West’s victory. The game had been rescheduled from the inclement weather of Jan. 22. West has five games remaining, four of which are against region opponents, including a game against South Forsyth on Feb. 2. South currently leads West in the Region 6-AAAAAA standings by a half game. The Lady Knights will finish out their season with four in-region games. Centennial is currently 1.5 games behind Lambert for the final playoff spot for the region.

CUMMING, Ga. — West Forsyth’s Jenna Staiti and South Forsyth’s Sarah Myers were among 755 high school seniors from across the country nominated for the 2016 McDonald’s All American Games. Both five-star recruits, Staiti and Myers committed to Maryland in November, adding to the top-tier recruiting class that

Cianciola said it has been a pleasure to coach Billings. “Lindsay is one of those athletes that comes along very rarely in a coach’s career. She is a fierce competitor, she is so humble, she is a straight-A student, and her work ethic is top-notch. She has all the attributes that you want as a coach,” he said. Cianciola has been with Northview’s cross country teams since 2002 and took over the varsity girls program two years ago. In his 14 seasons at Northview, Cianciola stated that Billings is “absolutely the best” he has coached. Billings has committed to Duke Uni-

versity where she will continue her cross country career. “I fell in love with [the university] and the coaches. I’m very excited to get an education that I never imagined I’d have the chance to get and I’ll have a lot of pride being able to run for such a prestigious school,” said Billings. Billings will compete in the 1-mile and 2-mile events in track and field beginning next month. For Billings, her last months at Northview will be “bittersweet,” but she is excited for her opportunities in the future. “I’ll forever be thankful and remember my time at Northview fondly. I’m just looking forward to the future and knowing that I’ve had so much to be thankful for.”

All six players in Maryland’s 2016 recruiting class were nominated for the All American Games, including Staiti, Myers, Kaila Charles (Md.), Staphanie Jones (Md.), Blair Watson (Md.), and Destiny Slocum (Ind.). Staiti, a 6-foot-6 center, is considered the No. 17 player in the nation according to ESPN. Staiti is averaging over 25 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks per game this season. West Forsyth is currently one game behind South Forsyth in the Region 6-AAAAAA standings. Surprisingly, Staiti is not a lifelong

basketball player. She did not begin playing the sport until she was in middle school after switching to basketball from swimming competitively. Myers, a 5-foot-11 guard, led South in scoring with 25 points against West in their 65-62 win over West on Dec. 18 that has given South their one-game lead in the region standings. A four-year starter for the War Eagles, Myers has compiled over 2,000 career points. South has not finished outside the top-three in the region standings in Myers’ first three seasons and are seeking their second consecutive region championship this season.

Doublegate plea: Drive like your kids live here Commuters use road as cut-thru, go too fast, residents say By HATCHER HURD hatcher@appenmdiagroup.com JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – The Vonderkall family considered the Doublegate subdivision in Johns Creek the perfect place for a home. That was until motorists began using their subdivision as a cut-thru between Buice Road and State Bridge Road. Kara and Chris Vonderkall liked the fact that the 450-plus homes offered lots of neighbors and playmates for their children when they moved in some 15 years ago. The schools in Johns Creek also were a big factor for them choosing to live here. But the nearby schools are ironically now part of the cause for real concern as commuters seeking a shortcut have taken to speeding along Doublegate’s main thoroughfare, Twingate Drive. Twingate is one of the few cut-thru streets that connect Buice Road to State Bridge Road and the elementary and high schools on it. The Vonderkalls and their neighbors say traffic studies from the city verify

that cars travel well above the posted speed limit of 25 mph and, just last week, one of the Vonderkalls’ young daughters was nearly struck by a car. Kara Vonderkall says they have received sympathetic help from Johns Creek Police and the city’s traffic and engineering departments, but real awareness needs to come from motorists who use the cut-thru on a daily basis. “This is a cut-thru. Some of it is because of the construction on Old Alabama Road, but it has been an ongoing problem with people coming from Buice Road,” she said. “What we want people to do when they turn onto our street is that they look at it as a neighborhood with children.” Matters came to a head for Vonderkall last week when she was standing with her daughter, waiting for the school bus at about 7:10 a.m. There are no sidewalks on Twingate, and with the rain leaving yards soggy, they were standing beside the curb as the bus approached. A car speeding from the opposite direction suddenly turned into the cul-

de-sac as Vonderkall’s daughter began to move toward the bus. “The car almost hit her and never slowed down,” she said. “The driver had to see the bus coming, and I suspect that is why she seemed to speed up. She wanted to beat the bus.” What people seem to fail to take into account is, when a school bus is on the street, it is a “kid magnet.” Youngsters instinctively begin to move toward buses, Vonderkall said. Vonderkall went to talk to the State Bridge Crossing Elementary School principal about what could be done to make her street safer for children. The next day a vice principal rode the bus. She also talked to city Public Works Manager Tom Black and Police Chief Ed Densmore, who also listened sympathetically. Vonderkall said it was a great relief when, the next morning, she saw a Johns Creek Police car following the bus. “But the city can’t assign a squad car to one street every day. That isn’t practical,” she said. “I was looking for an idea to get through to the people who drive on our street in the morning.

Kara and Chris Vonderkall and their two daughters want drivers to remember the Doublegate community is a neighborhood full of children. What I took away was those people just don’t look at it as a street where

curves in the road, trees and shrubs everywhere. There are a hundred places from which a child can dart,” Vonderkall said. Her husband, Chris, is just as upset. “We’re just trying to protect our kids. We’ve given up riding our bikes to friends’ houses. We moved here because there would be lots of kids for our kids to play with. And now we’re afraid to let them go out and play,” he said. And their street is far from the only one in Johns Creek with traffic issues, Chris Vonderkall said. “This is a family oriented city. People should be aware of that on our streets,” he said. When the near-accident happened, he had just boarded a plane at Hartsfield-Jackson when he got the call from his wife, who was understandably

upset. All he could feel was a helpless sort of rage. “This is an active and very social neighborhood. You see people walking, biking, jogging or walking their pets. We want to be able to enjoy our neighborhood,” he said. The Vonderkalls are by no means the only ones in Doublegate who are upset. Those signs are popping up everywhere. Neighbor Max Kallos is also concerned. “Folks need to drive in our neighborhood like they would their own,” Kallos said. “We get people cutting through our neighborhood doing 40 mph. That’s not how they drive on their street. “The Police Department is doing a phenomenal job, but they can’t be here all the time. People need to drive with more awareness.” CDAR Member SWIFT Code: GMCBUS3A

ALPHARETTA, Ga – An Atlanta resident is facing several forgery charges after allegedly cashing numerous fake checks Jan. 11 at local banks. According to police, Takala G. Welch, 24, of Atlanta, tried to cash two checks at the BB&T bank on Windward Parkway. It turned out the checks were both fake, for amounts of $3,500 and $2,400. The checks were copies of real checks. The real owners of the account of the bogus checks said the checks were fake. Bank employees said she was flagged in their system after cashing or attempting to cash checks at two other branches nearby. Police found no money on Welch

had cooked and left pans in the kitchen along with food debris. Beds were messed up, and beer and liquor bottles were found throughout the home. Both vehicles belonging to the family were reported missing. Several new accounts were found on Netflix, having unique names that led the son in the family to suspect several people he knows from high school. Two of them live in the same neighborhood. Reportedly missing from the home along with the cars were phones, purses, jewelry, computers, a TV, clothing, game consoles and games, for a total of nearly $23,000.

from her previous check-cashing attempts and she would not say to whom she gave it. Welch was arrested for forgery third degree.

Family returns home to burglary scene JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – A Spring Breeze Terrace family in Johns Creek went out to dinner Jan. 15 and returned to find their home the scene of a break-in. The victims told police they left their home about 6:30 p.m. and returned after 9. When they got home they found the back door smashed. Snack before pay bad for business JOHNS CREEK, Ga. – A man was allegedly seen snacking on food as he made his way through a local grocery store, eating the food and hiding the packages. According to police, the suspect, a 57-year-old Norcross resident, was seen walking through the Johns Creek location of Whole Foods and selecting a wheel of cheese, a donut and a pint of ice cream, all of which he began eating. When he finished an item, he hid the packaging or threw it away. The suspect said he only ate some cheese, because he bought it and said part of it was spoiled, so he tasted it. Employees said this was not the first time the suspect was spotted eating their food in the store.
