yan Doll and Anne Meadows will marry Aug. 27 after a friendship and courtship that began at Georgia Tech four years ago. Ryan, a graduate of Milton High School, will graduate in May with a degree in mechanical engineering, then leave for pilot training with the U.S. Air Force in Columbus, Mississippi, this fall. Anne, who grew up in Tucker and attended Holy Spirit Prep, will begin working for Aon Hewitt in June as a human resources technology consultant following her graduation from Georgia Tech.

Of the many memories Ryan Doll and Anne Meadows share is the agreement their relationship did not start with love at first sight. Anne recalls first meeting Ryan during freshman orientation at Georgia Tech, which ended with a “bonding activity” where the students were dancing. “Everyone was all doing their own thing, but at some point I thought some guy was trying to dance a little too close,” Anne said with a laugh, casting Ryan as the “some guy.” “I politely told him I had a boyfriend and to watch himself. As it turned out, that guy would be my dance partner for life.” Ryan is equally adamant that love was not found on the dance floor that night, as he also had a significant other at the time. “I was definitely caught off guard [by her remark],” he laughed and said. “That was pretty much one of the few times I talked to her all of freshman year. But, you know, things will always work out the way they are supposed to, and this is definitely one of those times.” They became friends during their sophomore year when they were leaders in the same campus organization, and began going on casual dates. For Anne, the summer before junior year was the time she realized Ryan was “the one.” He was spending part of the summer at home as well as in Air Force training, and she was working in Pennsylvania, so communication was limited. But before he left for training, he left a box with her family to give to her. Inside was a letter for every day he would be gone. “That summer really showed me how intentional he is in how he loves me, regardless of how hard it is at the time. I was pretty sure at that point that he was the one,” said Anne. “It took him a little longer!” For Ryan, “the moment” came in the fall of 2014 when the two were part of a group of Tech students studying abroad in France. They spent the weekdays in class and the weekends traveling, hitting 12 countries during the 16-week semester. Before coming back to the States, Ryan surprised Anne with a trip to Salzburg, Austria, where her favorite movie, “The Sound of Music” was filmed. “We had a blast touring the city and, in addition to all the other fun times we had the previous weekends, I knew I could, would and wanted to spend the rest of my life with her,” said Ryan.

“She knew the day was coming soon, but didn’t expect where I was going to propose,” said Ryan, who chose to ask Anne to marry him last December at sunset on top of Stone Mountain. He said it is a special place from her childhood and he always told her he wished he could have been part of that somehow. “So, ultimately, this was one of the only ways I could have made that happen,” said Ryan. The location took Anne by surprise since she had grown up going to the site all the time with her family, but had never gone with Ryan. “I never thought it would be somewhere he wasn’t really familiar with,” said Anne, who didn’t realize how special the day was becoming until they reached the top. She remembers how he went off on a monologue about his love for her (“which is normal – he loves to affirm me!”), and the future (“again, normal”), then began to reach into his jacket very slowly (“not normal,” she added.) “At this point I think I started laughing like crazy out of happiness and excitement as he got down on one knee and said, ‘Catherine Anne, will you marry me?’ It was wonderful.” For Ryan, getting through the proposal without dropping the ring and watching it bounce to the bottom of Stone Mountain – which he had an actual nightmare about – was the only thing that made him nervous. “So after her saying ‘yes’ and my trembling hand safely putting the ring on her finger, we rode the sky buckets back down the mountain and headed back to her house for a surprise engagement party.” The end … and the beginning. ■ By Candy Waylock

ucked away in a small house, off a lightly traveled side road in downtown Alpharetta, sits the center of a global organization that has impacted thousands of people in developing countries around the world for more than a decade. The 410 Bridge was founded here by Lanny Donoho and Kurt Kandler to help people in Kenya, Uganda, Haiti and Honduras improve their living conditions in sustainable ways. The program’s focus is in the areas of water, education, economic, health and discipleship, with the idea to empower local leaders to continue the programs established with the help of The 410 Bridge. The organization’s name comes from the Bible verse 1 Peter 4:10, which says, “Each of us should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others, faithfully ► See SHE GIVES BACK, Page 10

she gives back ▼ SHE GIVES BACK, Continued from Page 8 administering God’s grace.” Amy Todd, who works for The 410 Bridge as the child sponsorship manager, was drawn to that message six years ago when she was looking to return to work after a decade as a stay-at-home mom. The organization’s mission appealed to her sense of service and servitude. Through a friend she learned of a position in the accounting area, where she had some experience, and saw it as an opportunity to get involved in The 410 Bridge. “Knowing a little bit about The 410 Bridge at the time, I thought it would be a good way to get my foot in the door,” said Todd, a Greenville, South Carolina, native who moved to Milton in 1996. “I am very grateful to have been given the position in April 2010 and to still be part of this team today.” Over the years, she moved into a number of roles within the organization, including trip coordinator for East Africa, overall planner for all mission trips to Kenya and Uganda, and program coordinator for the implementation of programs in the 410 communities. Last summer, Todd moved into her current position in the child sponsorship area, which involves acquiring new child sponsors, retaining current sponsors and managing the relationships between child sponsors and their sponsored children. Over the years, she has led teams to Haiti, Kenya and Uganda, and is preparing to lead a high school team to Haiti over spring break in April which will include her daughter, Emma, 16, and youngest son, Ryan, 14. She and her husband, Craig, also have an older son, Jake, 17. In June she will return to Uganda. “I feel so grateful and privileged that I get to be part – a small part – of a much bigger story that God is writing here in the U.S. and in the four countries that we work in,” said Todd. She says being a part of the organization has given her a front row seat to the transformations taking place in the communities where The 410 Bridge is working. “I see how the community development work being done in the five areas – water, medical, education, economic and discipleship – is changing lives in the communities that we work in.” But the transformations, Todd points out, occur on both sides of the bridge. “Most trip participants think that they are going only to serve others,” she explains. “While that does happen, many trip participants return feeling as if they were the ones who received so much. There is nothing like seeing, firsthand, people in the midst of desperate conditions filled with joy and gratefulness because of the strong faith they have in [God].” The 410 Bridge is a nonprofit “Christcentered, community-initiated” organization that is not affiliated with any one church, said Todd, but partners with local churches and communities across the nation that work in the four countries. Here in the greater North Fulton area, The 410 Bridge works with North Point Community Church, 12Stone Church,

Greater Atlanta Christian School, First Baptist Church of Roswell and others. Todd, 51, who graduated from Clemson University and then earned her graduate degree from the University of Georgia, worked for years with Andersen Consulting, where she met her husband, and at Home Depot. While she enjoyed her corporate life before “retiring” in 2000 to stay home with her children, Todd said the rewards she receives by being a part of The 410 Bridge are immeasurable. She still vividly remembers the moment she knew she was where she was supposed to be in her life. It was on her first trip to Uganda, where her team spent the afternoon with a group of about 40 widows in the Kaihura community. “As we were ending our time with them, we washed the feet of every single one of them just as Jesus did his disciples,” Todd recalls. “Afterwards, one of the women stood and said we had brought God’s word to life for her. To just be there and experience that was an honor and privilege.” Another success story involved Baby Ephraim, who was born with a hole in his heart and had limited access to medical care. While his community raised funds to send him to India for life-saving surgery, they fell short in fully covering the costs. “We communicated this need to our supporters and church partners [within 410] and the additional funds were quickly obtained,” she said. “Today, Baby Ephraim is a thriving, rambunctious 5-year old who could not sit still when my team in Kenya stopped by to check on him in June.” But Todd said there are heartaches, as well, where all the medical care and prayers are not enough to save lives. “You get through those times in prayer and you trust that God has a plan even if it is one that we may never fully understand,” she said. “Seeing these heartbreaking situations can also make us more committed to the development work we are doing.” Todd said she is never fearful for her safety, or the safety of her team, despite the instability that is present throughout the world. The organization is constantly monitoring the situations in the countries it serves, has a solid crisis management plan, and qualified staff on the ground in each of these countries. “If you are not careful, you can let the media influence you to become fearful of leaving your house these days,” said Todd. “For me personally, I just made a decision that I cannot let fear control my life.” She encourages anyone else with a servant heart to follow that thread and see where it leads. For her it started “with baby steps,” beginning with her first job with The 410 Bridge, and walking through all the doors that opened beyond that. She quotes a favorite line from the movie “We Bought a Zoo” with Matt Damon, which sums up her experience: “Sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage. Just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” “I don’t know that I am a brave person,” Todd said, “but when I feel God tugging at my heart about something, I start to listen.”■

Helping a hoarder

What to do when ‘stuff’ takes over This is the second in a two-part series on organizing your life and home with advice from professional organizer and Johns Creek resident Katherine Trezise. In this feature, Trezise discusses the issue of hoarding and how to recognize the signs of the disorder, as well as ways to help a friend or loved one you think may be a hoarder.

BY CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

I

n 2010, a 38-year old woman died among chest-high debris that filled her Sandy Springs home in a situation fire officials described as “intolerable.” From the outside, there was little indication of the massive amount of “stuff” inside the home. Aside from a yard covered in ivy, neighbors in the middle-class neighborhood had no idea of the neglect inside. The depiction of hoarding has become fodder for reality television. But professionals say hoarding is a recognized mental disorder affecting 3 to 5 percent of the population, and it’s not an entertainment side show. Catherine Trezise has been a professional organizer for 15 years and has seen her share of clients with hoarding issues. But she is quick to point out the term “hoarding” is used very loosely – just because you have a lot of stuff or your house is messy does not mean you are a hoarder. “Certainly, anyone can acquire a lot of things and have difficulty discarding them,” said Trezise, owner of Absolutely Organized with locations in Johns Creek and Baltimore. “If you live in a large home with plenty of storage space, you have much more capacity for holding onto stuff than someone living in an apartment.” The problem comes when the accumulation of “stuff” creates chaos and dysfunction. “True hoarding disorder always involves some kind of impairment, like not being able to sleep in the bed, cook in the

kitchen, bathe in the bathroom, pest infestation, or neglect of home maintenance,” said Trezise, the author of the book, “My Journey to an Organized Life.” Katherine Trezise So, what tips the scales from collecting to hoarding? Trezise said ABSOLUTELY ORGANIZED collectors tend to 11123 BROOKHAVENCLUB DR. purchase items for a JOHNS CREEK, GA 30097 reason, can control the quantity they purchase and know where they will display their items, INFO@ABSOLUTELY-ORGANIZED.COM proudly, for others to appreciate. “Compulsive hoarders, on the other hand, don't plan ahead,” she explained. “They feel compelled to buy things without regard to their cost, don't have a designated place in mind to put them, and only enjoy the ‘buy,’ not the things themselves.” Other signs of a hoarding disorder include difficulty discarding or parting with possessions regardless of the value; the hoarding situation causes distress or harm, including emotional, physical, social, financial or legal problems; or it creates an inability to use the spaces in the home or workplace for their intended purposes because of the clutter. In her experience, Trezise said hoarding generally gets out of control after a traumatic event or some type of loss, with many of her clients saying they were previously organized then “something happened” and the spiral began. One client’s hoarding was triggered when her mother gave away one of her collections while she was away at college, and became worse when she had marital problems, said Trezise. And simply removing the stuff and cleaning up, without dealing with the stressor, is not the answer. “Most forced clean outs of hoarded homes will almost guarantee

women in business WAYS YOU CAN HELP IN A HOARDING SITUATION INCLUDE: • •

• • •

Express and demonstrate your love and concern for the person. Address health and safety issues first. Items in hoarded homes become like wallpaper; the person who hoards doesn't even see them anymore. Think like a fire marshal. Point out that an EMT would not be able to carry a stretcher down a narrow pathway in the house, some of the exits are blocked, or papers are being stored near heat or ignition sources. Your loved one will be more likely to accept your help to make her safe than she would if you came in with trash bags and a dumpster. Don't threaten the person. Maintaining the lines of communication is critical. Offer to help, but let her know she has the final say (assuming she is a competent adult and her behavior is not threatening a child or anyone else). Read the book, “Digging Out,” by Dr. Michael Tompkins. It is specifically for loved ones of people who hoard and gives practical advice for helping them move forward.

▼ WOMEN IN BUSINESS, Continued from Page 12 the resident will replace the hoard within one year if the underlying reasons for the hoarding are not addressed,” said Trezise. Hoarders are aware that other people have a problem with the condition of the home, and are generally not fully on board when it comes to parting with their things. Trezise said they may temporarily declutter to get the “heat” off them, then return to the behavior at some point. Trezise says hoarding disorder, which is classified as an obsessive-compulsive disorder, is difficult to overcome. Traditional behavioral therapy and drug treatments take considerable time and money, and have limited success. Trezise said if you are trying to help a friend or loved one who is a hoarder, managing expectations is important. “If you have a loved one who hoards, their home will likely never look like yours,” she advises. “My goal as an organizer is to help my hoarding clients be able to live more safely in their homes and be better able to spend their time on the people, things and activities that are most important to them.” ■

A bride needs several outfits for the honeymoon. For the Bridesmaids

foundation wear is important under formal wear for overall fit and comfort. “You want to dance, eat and feel like yourself while looking your best.” No matter the individual sizes of the wedding party, Anna Bella Fine Lingerie has something for them. McKinzie carries European and domestic lines of beautiful bras and foundation wear to fit petite as well as voluptuous women. McKinzie said, “Most of my customers are women over 50.” Quality, comfort and support are the most important things women in their prime are looking for in foundation wear. Anna Bella provides the expertise of finding the proper fitting bras that are beautiful and can be matched with waist cinchers, high-waist briefs, lace panties or thongs. McKinzie raves about heat-molded lace bras that provide coverage and support without the added thickness of a fabric cup that can be very hot in the summertime. Andrea Sobotor, is an enthusiastic and satisfied customer. McKinzie helped her find proper fitting bras after a recent 20-pound weight loss. Sobotor smiled and said, “Pam helped me bring my A-game. ou think a sectional would be perfect, great, let's look at your space and its functionality. Many of my clients struggle in determining whether to place sofas, loveseats, chairs or sectionals in their desired room. The challenge can become overwhelming but doesn't have to be, with the assistance of a designer. The first question to ask your self is how will my selection best fit the space, which of the pieces will hug the walls leaving the others to float in the room. Sectionals are a great way to seat many people, they are comfortable options for family recreation rooms. They can be upholstered in a variety of durable fabrics and leathers. There are many configurations and style options available allowing you to choose your cushions, pillows, arms and legs that best meet your preferences. Measuring is crucial before purchasing. You may believe the sectional you see on the showroom floor is perfect for

your space, however they can be deceiving, and your space may not accommodate the configuration, also be sure that you consider table, ottoman and lighting options before making the commitment. Some rooms are perfect for placing two sofas, I often encourage clients to do this rather than using a sofa with a loveseat. Sofas are available in various lengths, and can be arranged to fit the room comfortably, keep in mind that there is little difference in cost between purchasing a sofa and a loveseat. The sofas can be placed across from one another with a large cocktail table or ottoman placed between them, allowing for chairs to be added to one or both sides. If the distance between the sofas needs to be extended to accommodate the chairs two cocktail tables can create an elegant look affording great functionality. You may like the ability to rearrange your furniture in the same space, the sofas can easily be placed at a right angle and

the chairs opposite one sofa or angle. Let's talk chairs. One mistake that is often made in the selection process is choosing a chair that is not in proportion or does not complement the style of the sofa. There are chairs designed for conversation, and those that are suited to lounging, once this choice is made the options are vast. A chair with an ottoman serves well for both conversation and comfort also affording extra seating when needed. Recliners are options that when in the right style and size can be welcomed additions. Choosing fabrics and leathers are also something Peter Benedetto, an accomplished, award winning Interior Designer, with Tuscany Fine Furnishings, Offering Life Style Fine Furnishings, Decorative Accessories and Design Services for Every Room in Your Home! 1570 Holcomb Bridge Rd. in Roswell, 770-993-0640 ext. 2, Showroom hours: Mon-Sat 10-6 p.m. Sun. 1-5 p.m. or Shop our collections online at, “Click Brick”.

that a designer can assist you with insuring that they complement your taste and style. Take the struggle out of your selection, whether choosing sectionals, sofas, loveseats or chairs the options are abundant, keep an open mind and the result will be perfect! ■

Love Is In The Air Romance Writer Fans Fiction’s Flames

BY KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Kathy@appenmediagroup.com

A

s wedding-planning season begins, love is definitely in the air. Then again, for romance writers, love – plus some compelling plot twists resolved by optimistic endings – is always in the air. USA Today best-selling author Christy Hayes has certainly learned a thing or two about turning passion into a real page-turner. To date, the Alpharetta writer, who specializes in romance and women’s fiction, has published 12 books, two novellas, contributed to three anthologies and spent the past year ghostwriting a father-son memoir. Now she’s back to romance writing, working on book Christy Hay es three in her most recent series. Fans of her top-selling “Heart of Glass,” a contemporary romance set in South Carolina’s low Marietta and graduating from Walton, she attended the country, will be happy to hear that news. A seductive University of Georgia, he majored in journalism. Upon story centered around magazine writer Kate Donovan graduation, she worked for the Center for the Visually and builder Danny Flannery, “Heart of Glass” follows the Impaired in Atlanta until, in 1997, she and husband, Chris, pair from young love through years of separation to a decided to start a family. Charlie and Lindsey soon arrived. reunion that, initially, is anything but amorous. Nothing Then, when Lindsey, now 16, entered kindergarten, Hayes is as it seems, however, in this steamy tale of lust, longing began writing her first book. and loss. Except, perhaps, the undeniable attraction “After spending four years in the nonprofit world and between Kate and Danny. It’s a sexy, occasionally sad, but then almost a decade as a stay-at-home mom, I wasn’t sure ultimately satisfying tale that keeps readers engaged all I was up for the task,” she said. the way to the happy ending. A year later, she had completed her first manuscript. “I think the appeal of romance novels is there is “The book was awful,” she admitted, “but finishing was a nothing in the world like falling in love and the optimism monumental task. I knew I could write. Now I needed to of committing to spending the rest of your life with learn to write well.” That quest led her to the local chapter someone. Through the pages of a romance, women can of Romance Writers of America as well as stacks of craft experience the wonder and magic of falling in love over books and hours upon hours of practice. and over again,” Hayes said. “Romance is a great escape Five years later, Hayes had five completed from the realities of life. And if you’re like me and fell in manuscripts – and a “mountain” of rejection letters from love long ago, it provides a way to relive those magical literary agents. It was 2010 and much had changed in the feelings.” publishing world since she had begun writing. Some of it The story of how Hayes came to compose her was discouraging, such as how hard the industry had been particular brand of bliss is nearly as compelling as one of hit when the economy crashed in 2008, making it even her storylines. Growing up in more difficult for new writers to get book deals. But some of the changes turned out to be beneficial, at least for Hayes. Specifically, self-publishing was on the upswing. “I’d had it with the query-wait routine and decided to take matters into my own hands,” she said. “It was scary back then because while (self-publishing) was on the rise, it was still considered a huge risk.” Confident enough in her own work to take the plunge, Hayes self-published all five manuscripts in April 2011. “I wanted readers,” she said, “and I was ready to succeed or fail on my own.” Far from being a piece of cake, self-publishing her deliciously sensuous stories involved “a huge learning curve” about every imaginable aspect of printing, from securing romantic cover art to formatting type for each distributor. Sales started slowly but, as Hayes learned the business and began marketing her books online through reader blogs and advertising, demand grew. About two years later, she even hit the USA Today best-seller list with a timely sale and an ad in BookBub, a service that sends daily emails to readers with news of free and discounted e-books. That ad was for “Heart of Glass,” and, soon, readers everywhere were drinking in all the details about Kate and Danny’s delightfully tumultuous romance. Seven books and various other projects later, Hayes has never regretted deciding to self-publish, an approach 20 | northsidewoman.com | february2016

she says “is now considered a valid path to publication” replete with much step-by-step information on the Internet as well as a vibrant community of authors willing to help. After taking an extended break from writing romances to work on a father-son memoir, Hayes has returned to her first literary love – fiction – and particularly stories featuring one of her favorite themes: secondchance romances. As she said, “Who can’t relate to the awkwardness and emotions of dealing with an old flame?” Indeed, “Heart of Glass” is a classic second-chance romance, as Kate is sent on assignment to interview Danny, her first and only love she walked away from six years earlier for reasons that become achingly clear to readers, if not – at least initially – to Danny. “Love makes the world go round, and not surprisingly, all of my books feature two people falling in love for keeps,” Hayes said. The challenge for romance writers is to offer plot twists that are fresh and relevant, and Hayes delivers with books like, “The Accidental Encore,” which explores the world of online dating. After getting pointers from a single friend who helped guide her through Match. com, Hayes was even more content with the comfortable life she and Chris have created in Alpharetta. As she said, “Let’s just say I walked away from my interview happy to be happily married!” It’s a matrimonial state she shares with all the fictional characters in her contemporary romances, which invariably end with couples heading for altars. Even her new-adult books, which bridge the gap between the genres of young adult and contemporary romance, have “happy for now,” if not “happily ever after,” endings. Explaining, Hayes said many young readers currently consider marriage a “throwaway” concept, so her books in the newadult genre speak their language – but from her point of view. “As a believer in marriage, my characters, though young, find their forever loves,” Hayes said. And, for fans of her fiction, those forever loves have a wonderful tendency to pop back up in future books. Hayes’ “The Sweetheart Hoax” updates readers on Kate and Danny, who are now happily married and expecting their first child. Just as such details provide a certain sort of fictional satisfaction for inquiring bookworms, Hayes is similarly bolstered by a career that, while she laughs and says will never make her a fortune, is still fulfilling in many other ways. As she said, “I enjoy having something that engages my mind and creativity. I also love connecting with people who enjoy my work as well as other writers.” For more about the author, go to christyhayes.com. Her novels are available in print or e-books through Amazon, Barnes & Noble and CreateSpace.com, and as e-books only through Apple’s iBooks, Smashwords.com and Kobobooks.com. ■

Nothing Bundt Cakes fills niche in BY CANDY WAYLOCK

or someone whose family and corporate life once kept her too busy to cook, Gloria Mattei is finding sweet success in a business that is all about the baking. Nothing Bundt Cakes in Milton is now in its third year of operation, turning out a variety of Bundt cakes from its location off Windward Parkway. The uniquely shaped cakes were hugely popular in the 1950s and ’60s when they were first introduced to the U.S. market, but the Bundt cakes from Mattei’s ovens are anything but your grandmother’s creation. She quickly lists the variety of flavors available, including chocolate chocolate chip, white white chocolate, red velvet, white chocolate raspberry, carrot, lemon, marble, cinnamon swirl and pecan praline. Customers can choose from 10-inch and 8-inch cakes as well as Bundlets, which are enough to share between two people, and personal-sized Bundtinis. “Nothing Bundt Cakes offers a product that is a beloved and special memory to many people,” said Mattei, who first moved to North Fulton in 1997 and now makes Milton her home. “We’ve learned that Bundt cakes hold a special place in many people’s hearts, and many of us remember a loved one baking a special Bundt cake just for them at some point in their lives.” Mattei was born in Puerto Rico, the youngest of five children in a family with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Her grandfather owned and developed land for farming and cattle, her mother built her own realty leasing business, and her brother opened his own bookstore. Initially, Mattei took the corporate route, taking a job with Verizon Wireless after graduating with a business degree from the University of Puerto Rico. But after 16 years in the business world, happily married with two children, the urge to own her own business took hold. “I was introduced to [Nothing Bundt Cakes] in 2011 when a co-worker

22 | northsidewoman.com | february2016

introduced me to the brand on one of my business trips,” Mattei said. “I was impressed by the quality and taste and my first thought was ‘There is nothing like this in Atlanta.’” The company was founded nearly 20 years ago by two women, Debra Shwetz and Dena Tripp, in Las Vegas and has since grown to more than 100 locations nationwide, including three in Georgia. Mattei says other than loving the product and knowing it filled a unique niche in the cake world, she admits she was outside her comfort zone in opening her own franchise. “My background had nothing to do with bakeries or cakes,” she said, laughing. “I loved my corporate career, but that owner/entrepreneur seed inside me wanted to grow.” She was also inspired by her two children, now 14 and 11, and the desire to share a family business with them. Her son has autism and her dream included having a business that would serve as a platform where he could be actively involved and learn lifelong skills. But the path from idea to reality came with challenges for Mattei and her husband of 20 years, Sergio Pacheco, once they decided to pursue a franchise with Nothing Bundt Cakes. She questioned her decision to leave the security of the corporate world and its steady paychecks. “I kept asking myself ‘Is this the right thing to do?” she said. “I knew nothing about baking cakes … I had no food industry experience, I don’t even cook!” But she found comfort in the strength of the brand, the history of success and the franchise team she worked with.

“The process of becoming a small-business owner takes time,” she said. “There are a lot of factors to consider, such as financial analysis and risk, working capital, learning curve, growth projections, financial and personal impact to the family, market trends, demographics, locations, staffing … the list goes on and on.” The biggest challenge came in the rejection of her first business plan by Nothing Bundt Cakes in 2012, and the difficult decision to try again. Instead of focusing on the failure, Mattei said she chose “positivism and persistence” to make the plan better. “We had to go back to the drawing table and figure out what were we missing,” she said. She enlisted the help of experts, added more creativity and substance to the plan, and were approved on their second try. “If it wasn’t for our positive attitude and perseverance toward the challenge, we would have never been where we are today,” said Mattei. And where she is today is year three of a thriving business that offers a new option in the sea of bakeries and adds a modern twist to an “old-fashioned” product. Mattei said being part of a franchise does come with a set of operational procedures that must be followed, but also allows enough freedom to make the business her own. “Being new in this industry, it was important to have guidelines that I could follow, [and which] have led to the success of the brand nationwide for the past 17 years,” said Mattei. “But I still have operational freedom that allows us to customize and come up with creative solutions.” She points to more than 40 custom designs that can fit any event, whether it’s a small family birthday party or a wedding with hundreds of guests. Mattei said she can also add company logos, pictures or messages to make the Bundt cakes even more personal. Being a small-business owner also means helping support the organizations that make a community strong, Mattei said. Over the years, Milton’s Nothing Bundt Cakes has supported numerous charities, including FOCUS, an organization that supports kids with special needs and their families, Shamrocking for a Cure to support cystic fibrosis cure research, North Fulton Community Charities, Curing Kids Cancer, Young Survival Coalition, the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk, and local schools. “It’s a wonderful feeling to wake up every day and know that you are doing something good for your family and the community,” Mattei said. ■ february2016 | northsidewoman.com | 23

efore visiting your florist to discuss wedding flowers, here are few things to consider: Choosing a color scheme should be your first decision. Paint sample cards from the home improvement store work well. Picking three to four color/shades will help your designer with the pallet. Look at different styles of bouquets and decide if you like tight and round, loose and airy, or maybe cascading. The color and style of your wedding flowers will define the look and feel of the entire event. Next, find out what your wedding venue provides for the guest tables. Using some of those items may help with your budgeting.

After choosing your florist, be sure to ask for a design sample to ensure your vision and that of your designer are one and the same. ■ Sid Flowers, Flowers From Us 825 Mayfield Road, Alpharetta, GA 30009 (770) 640-6007 www.FlowersfromUs.net

Wedding Guest Attire in 2016 Daytime wedding

Beach

Consider the elements of wind, sun, sand and sea when choosing your attire for a beach wedding. Choose a pastel colored or floral printed tealength sundress in a breathable fabric that you would wear to a nice dinner. Bring along a widebrimmed hat for protection from the sun. Wear flat sandals that can be easily removed for walking in the sand. Avoid: short dresses or skirts that could be caught in the wind and cause an embarrassing show, rubber flipflops, swimsuits and tennis visors.

Mountain

Alpine wedding locations are chosen for their vistas, not because the wedding couple is a fan of buffalo plaid and hiking boots. With that insight, consider a kneelength dress or longer of wool or velvet in feminine colors for winter. Choose festive but sturdy fabrics like shantung for spring or summer. Closed-toe pumps and tights in the winter, and peep-toe or low-heeled dressy sandals in the summer. Be flexible in your attire choices as weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. If it snows in the winter, bring boots to wear to the venue and change shoes

once you get there. Bring a festive sweater to ward off chilly breezes in the spring. If you are not accustomed to higher altitudes and dry air, bring chapstick, drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol. Avoid: denim skirts, hiking boots and camouflage (even if the wedding party is wearing it.)

Barn

Wedding couples choose barn venues for the rustic chic décor and romantic, ethereal atmosphere. Although some wedding parties may wear cowboy boots, most do not. Most brides will wear full,

Evening wedding

Many evening weddings are more formal. Whether the dress code is white tie, black tie or formal, choose a full-length gown, faceted jewelry, strappy metallic sandals and an updo. You can also choose a festive cocktail dress paired with statement jewelry. If you do not own any formal wear, consider shopping at a consignment store to find a great deal on dresses that have been gently worn. Remember, it is better to be overdressed than underdressed. The wedding couple will appreciate the gesture of honoring their special occasion by dressing your best. Avoid: minidresses, linen, casual hairdos and business shoes. ■

formal, white wedding dresses in a barn venue, so you should take that into consideration when deciding what to wear. Color is important. Many brides who choose this type of venue have wedding colors in soft, romantic tones. Unless you want to be left out of the group photos, leave your bright red dress at home. Dresses, skirts or pantsuits are acceptable. Choose sturdy but festive fabrics like shantung. In the full heat of summer choose breathable cotton or linen in pastel colors or floral patterns. Wedge heels or sturdy heeled ladylike loafers are a must when walking over gravel and grass. Avoid: fabrics that snag easily, stiletto heels, full-length dresses or skirts that can drag in the dirt or mud.

Knee-length dresses and skirts are still the most appropriate wedding guest attire. Choose a pastel colored or floral print dress in georgette fabric that follows the romantic but casual feel of a daytime wedding. Wear wedge heels for ease of walking on tile, grass or garden paths. Be considerate of churches or synagogues that require female guests to cover their shoulders or heads by bringing a pashmina or fine-gauge sweater. Avoid: tank tops, miniskirts and heavily distressed fabrics of any kind.

A

ria Salons, an Aveda Lifestyle Salon, has been servicing the hair care needs of Alpharetta for the past 15 years. Their mission is to serve, nurture and replenish their community. Aria Salons’ owners Mechelle and Matthew Khodayari have dedicated themselves and their team to being “Day Makers”. They consider it a privilege to have the chance to change someone’s day based on their experience at Aria Salons. Mechelle Khodayari, a second generation hairdresser and a former Aveda color educator, is the creative force behind Aria Salons. With the strong belief that education is the backbone of any great salon, she places a strong emphasis on keeping the team up to date on the latest techniques and trends in cutting and color. Aria Salons annually hosts four to five educational seminars featuring top Aveda platform artists; in 2016 Aria will welcome the illustrious Lupe Voss, one of Aveda’s internationally renowned color educators. When it comes to hair color, knowing how to ask for what you want is paramount. Here are some of buzzwords for color in 2016. Balayage (“Hand Painted”) highlights are pained directly onto the hair. The regrowth is less noticeable which allows you to go longer between color appointments. Ombré is generally darker at the top and lighter at the bottom. The color difference can range from subtle (in which case we might call it Sombré—subtle Ombré) to striking, depending on the effect you’re going for. Babylights are similar to traditional highlights; however, as the name suggests, they’re much smaller and more delicate. The resulting effect is a natural sprinkling of color that mimics the effect of a tropical getaway. The Aria team welcomes you to treat yourself to a customized cut or color performed by a talented team of artists who are dedicated to being your “Day Maker”. Take advantage of a customized consultation that will get you on the road to the hair of your dreams. Aria Salons has a second location in The Collections Forsyth. ■

Northside Man: Scott Doll, executive director of the Ed Isakson/Alpharetta Family YMCA City of residence: Alpharetta Hometown: Kettering, Ohio Family: Wife, Suzanne; Children, Ryan (23), Kristen (20), Cara (17)

S

cott Doll grew up just south of Dayton, Ohio, where he was active in school and sports (especially competitive swimming) and in community organizations where the seed of public service was planted at an early age. He was awarded an Air Force ROTC scholarship to the University of Florida, originally studying nuclear engineering before switching to finance, where he felt a job serving people better matched his interests. Following graduation, he sought work in the Atlanta area with financial institutions that placed high priority on community involvement and impact. After 10 years, Doll said he “heard his calling” and traded in his banking duties for a position with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. His tenure with the YMCA includes opening two new branches: the Fowler Peachtree Corners YMCA as the associate

as I began my career with the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. As Suzanne had already been teaching at Milton High School for 10 years, it made good sense to look in the area. More importantly, we had grown to love the Alpharetta/North Fulton area, had many friends locally, and were so impressed with the schools and the quality of life. We knew it would be a great place to put down roots and raise our family. We were right! We love North Fulton, and Alpharetta is our hometown.

Your wife, Suzanne, is a popular teacher at Milton High School, having taught there for more than 20 years. How did you meet?

I met my beautiful wife, Suzanne, at [the University of Florida] where we began dating. She graduated a year ahead of me and returned to the Fort Lauderdale area to teach high school math. I couldn’t let her get away, so I proposed to her on Christmas Eve, my senior year, and we were married on July 5th following my graduation in 1986. Suzanne and I will celebrate 30 years on July 5th this year. We have three children: Ryan will graduate in May from Georgia Tech with a degree in mechanical engineering. As a part of his ROTC obligation, he will be commissioned into the Air Force after graduation and anticipates reporting to USAF pilot training in September. Kristen is a junior at Georgia College in Milledgeville, majoring in environmental science, and Cara is a junior at Milton.

The best part of my job at the Y is being in a position to positively impact kids, families and individuals in the communities we serve. The Y was a significant part of my childhood and has a lot to do with why I am doing this work today. If I can be involved in creating the same opportunities for others as were created for me, I know I’m affecting the quality of life and opportunity for others.

I also enjoy the opportunity to work with an outstanding group of committed volunteers who make up our advisory board and one of the best, most dedicated and caring staff teams I can imagine.

A lot of people may think the YMCA is just about sports and working out, but is it much more than that? The Y is truly so much more than what some may see as a “swim and gym,” although that, too, is certainly central to our mission. Our wellness programs, such as the Coach Approach and the YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program, can be truly amazing and life-changing. We offer youth programs such as youth sports, day camp, or Y After School where we serve over 2,000 elementary schoolchildren each day at 29 sites; including 27 North Fulton County elementary schools. We see so many children, like my own, literally grow up in the Y, participating in Y Teen Leadership programs and finding their first job — all in a values-centered environment. Just this past Sunday, our YMCA volunteer committee brought more than 300 Y members, their children and guests together to make 3,240 lunches for a homeless ministry sponsored by Must Ministries. There are so many opportunities to be involved in serving the greater needs of our community.

Your son is getting married this year – a real milestone in your family. What’s it like to be the father of the groom?

I guess this is where you say, “Wow – it’s amazing how quickly they grow up!” We could not be more proud of Ryan and so blessed to have Anne Meadows as part of the family as our future daughterin-law. We love spending time with her family. Her parents, Todd and Roberta, have become great friends, and have done an amazing job raising Anne and her four sisters. We look forward to many wonderful years, making great memories. You really begin to appreciate the “circle of life” and how important it is to enjoy the time you have with family. ■

Why Roswell is so desirable for weddings and special occasions I

t’s happened! The man of your dreams has popped the question and you’ve said yes. Whether you’ve been planning your wedding since childhood or all of this is new ground, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. What to do first? Instinct might tell you to pick up the phone and start lining up vendors but your wedding isn’t tomorrow or even next week. Take a deep breath and look to experienced professionals to guide you. Experts advise the first step is nailing down a venue. What is your vision? Historic destination. Wildlife sanctuary. Antebellum home haven. Nature lover’s paradise. Historic Roswell wears many hats (gloves, too, when the formality of the occasion calls for them) and can deftly help arrange your wedding. History, culture and Southern hospitality—it’s all here, set against a backdrop of natural splendors and with all the modern amenities that will make your special day an experience to remember. Roswell has authentic antebellum event sites for brides who want a true Southern ambiance. Prefer petals to the past? We have sites with gardens for outdoor events that bloom with atmosphere. Located on the northern banks of the Chattahoochee River, Roswell is perched in the palm of Mother Nature allowing you to choose a venue with scenic water views. We can deliver a modern twist with industrial chic in a building with original brick walls and high beam ceilings. Call Visit Roswell, GA (Roswell Convention & Visitors Bureau) for recommendations on all the services your occasion requires: florists, wedding planners, DJs, bands, caterers; reception space, site selection and free planning guidance and advice. Let us recommend the perfect space from many one of a kind, locally owned restaurants and event facilities specializing in rehearsal dinners, bridal luncheons and receptions. Visit Roswell, GA can also provide assistance with hotel room rates and reservations for our hotels. Icing on the cake for bridal parties: We have complimentary Goody Bags to help welcome your out of town wedding guests staying in a Roswell hotel. For weddings and occasions, Roswell will serve your gathering well and with aplomb. 770-640-3253; www.visitroswellga.com; weddings@visitroswellga.com. ■

Do Pets Communicate Mentally? ME ADOPT

BY DR. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP Loving Hands Animal Hospital

M

y experience with accounts of animal telepathy began early in my career. I had a client who worked as an animal communicator and recounted an episode of a pregnant cat having difficulty delivering. She said the cat mentally spoke to her by asking, "Where are my kittens?" I have a number of clients who regularly use professional animal communicators. Some of these recount stories of messages conveyed in language while others speak of messages transmitted as visual or emotional images. As a clinician, I am open-minded about whatever services pet parents avail themselves to as long as the well-being of their pets is not compromised. Do animals mentally project the English language? Of this I am quite skeptical. What I do know is what anyone who has had a deep emotional relationship with a pet will attest – pets feel and share emotion, and demonstrate an intuitive awareness of when we need their comfort. Perhaps I am overly emotional, but when my dog, Charlie,

spontaneously comes to me when I am in need, I feel a spiritual connection. I am confident he understands my need and is consciously comforting me. Similarly, there is an intuitive knowing on my part of when he needs me. Some would argue this is simply a trained response on the part of my Charlie: That he recognizes cues from my body language, responds and receives positive feedback from my stroking and embracing, thus the behavior is repeated. My sensing his needs would be similarly explained. For seizure alert, diabetic alert and emotional support animals, some posit humans release a smell or pheromone, which explains what appears to be remarkable intuition on the part of animals and handlers. In the end, we all find our own truth. My experience is that pets are certainly capable of behavior and understanding beyond that of instinct and training. Whether spiritual communication or biochemistry and training, pets and people communicate and enrich each other's lives. ■

PET OF THE MONTH: Luxor

M

eet Luxor, an 8-year old Yorkie mix who came to Angels Among Us Pet Rescue needing surgery for a broken femur. Now 100 percent better, this sweet dog is looking for a home where he can finally settle down and be someone’s companion. Luxor does well with other dogs (he has never lived with cats), and would do best in a child-free home. He likes to run around in a backyard if possible, or take lots of walks. Luxor is working on crate training and house training, and is happy just sitting in your lap and keeping you company. To inquire about adopting Luxor email inquiry@angelsrescue.org. An Adoption Application can be found at http://www. angelsrescue.org/adopt/adoption-forms and can be submitted online. ■
