How does your child see herself? What is your child’s concept of herself? Is she a very important person in her own eyes? Or does she think she’s not too good of a person? It is important that a child have a genuine feeling that she matters in the world. Psychologists have developed several ways to measure self-concept. Research about schoolaged children shows that a child’s self-concept is directly related to later achievement in school. Children who have a poor self- concept do poorly in school learning tasks. Those who feel good about themselves generally do well in school. Here are three general principles which will help your child develop a good self- concept: 1. Let your child know that you love her. A child needs to know that she is important to you, that she has your love — even when she has engaged in some unlovable activities (“I love you, but I don’t like what you have just done.”). 2. Help your child handle her failures. What messages are you giving her when she fails? She needs to know that you’re on her side, that you accept her — win or lose — for who she is. Your corrections should deal with what she’s done, not what she “is.” 3. Don’t be dishonest. Your child knows when she hasn’t done well, when she has failed. If you acknowledge that you know this, but that it isn’t the end of the world, your child gains confidence in you to reflect an honest value to her. Make sure you give her the room she needs to learn and make mistakes. But also make sure she knows you’re on her side — win or lose. At Kids R Kids, we partner with our parents – call today for more information.

How Huntington can benefit your child when school isn’t in session. Huntington Learning Center provides alternatives to parent who want to help their children avoid summertime regression and work on basic skills. Summer is an ideal time to fine-tune or improve skills. Without the pressure of typical school –year obligations – and seven or eight hours more free time each day for three months – many students are better able to reap

months. Your child is the focus. It’s not unfathomable that a child learns at a different pace or grasps concepts in a different manner might fall behind in a class of 20 or 30 students. At Huntington, teachers work with students individually or in a small group of three or four. Individualized teaching methods help to get to the root of the problem. At Huntington, teachers perform an academic evaluation of each student before beginning instruction so that they can first understand the child’s strengths and weaknesses. Afterward, a program of instruction is customized for the child – one that will meet his or her precise needs.

Lionheart Focuses on Individual Differences The Lionheart School was founded in 2000 by parents and professionals who struggled to find an appropriate setting that would serve children with special needs. Lionheart is a 501(c) (3) accredited by SACS/SAIS for children from age 4-21, and has certified master level Special Education teachers, and therapists licensed in their respective fields. each child’s emotional, social and intellectual development. A psychologist who specializes in appropriate school settings said of Lionheart: “The warm, encouraging atmosphere along with the expertise to assess how to teach students as individual learners. . .AND the one stop shopping for the multiple therapies that a child needs makes Lionheart a good fit! I am impressed with the number of opportunities your students have to engage in communication. . . it is obvious that they have opportunities for diverse social interactions across multiple settings. Stay sharp over the summer with Omega Learning Center - South Forsyth

Experts say children can lose 30% of the academic knowledge they acquire during the school year over the summer. Don’t let your child get left behind! Make sure your child stays sharp and starts the new school year prepared and confident by enrolling him or her in Omega Learning Center’s summer tutoring program. Omega Learning Center – South Forsyth provides tutoring K-12 in math, reading, writing, foreign language, study skills, and SAT/ACT prep. A custom program is built for your child based on the results of the nationally-recognized Woodcock Johnson III academic assessment, which evaluates your child in all areas of reading and math. Specific skill gaps are identified in each academic area, and a “road map” is created for each student. Our certified teachers provide individualized instruction and communicate with the parent through daily emails. Students have the same tutor each session, and tutors use a combination of learning styles and resources to maximize your child’s academic growth. Omega Learning Center – South Forsyth is SACS accredited and is conveniently located at 2585 Peachtree Parkway, Cumming, GA 30041, at the Mathis Airport Parkway intersection next to Walgreens. 770.205.5586; email:southforsyth@omegalearning.com; www.omegalearning-southforsyth.com.
