Man takes naked ‘fun run’ in yard FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — A 41-year-old man was arrested March 24 for public indecency on Silver Lake Court.

Officers arrived on the scene to find the man in his driveway with his clothes on.

Officers told the man they were called to his house about a naked man in the yard. The man said he had been naked and was also screaming.

When asked why he was naked in public, the man said “he had been having a bad week and needed a ‘fun run.’”

Officers said the man reportedly was rambling about irrelevant subjects and reportedly had a hard time focusing and following directions. He denied drug use or mental illness.

Officers called emergency medical services to evaluate the man and found he did have a history of mental illness and was likely in a manic state but otherwise healthy.

In the report, officers said they had been to the address the day before in reference to an open door, during which time they noted the house was neat. But on the second visit, the place seemed to be reportedly ransacked and the man had a number of scars on his body.

Due to his behavior reportedly escalating, officers thought it was important to prevent the man from further incidents and get him to a safe place where he can be monitored until his mania dissipates.

He was arrested for public indecency.

Parent starts fight at child’s school

DUI arrests

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — An angry mother took to her daughter’s school March 15. The mother came to the school during an after-school program to pick up her daughter after her daughter said she had been written up for bad behavior on the playground.

A teacher said the mom questioned the write-up, but signed the form and left the office. She said the mom then returned to the room and began pointing at the other child that was involved in the situation and yelling at him to stay away from her daughter.

The teacher had to step in between the mom and the victim, at which point the mom then began yelling at the victim, saying he was a liar, and grabbed him by the arm.

Officers met with the mom and issued a criminal trespass warning not to return to the school during after-school hours. School safety also sent a letter.

The school system removed the mom as a substitute teacher for the county.

What is blended vision?

Undoubtedly, many folks in their 40’s who were previously unburdened by funny contraptions fashioned from glass and steel (aka glasses!) have painfully realized the limitations of the human visual system with ageing. Their ability to see near, far and everything in between begins to betray them and they awake one day wishing that their arms could grow just a few inches longer or, perhaps, that they could have a selfie stick fashioned as a book holder permanently attached to their arms (or perhaps, not).

Funny or not, it is a real issue that affects patients as they turn the midlife corner.

Is Seeing the Crossword Puzzle Harder than Solving It? Could be Cataracts.

The human visual system as an inherent ability to focus on near objects by a mechanism called ‘accommodation’. This begins to slow down in our 40’s and comes to a screeching halt around 60 years of age. For centuries then, your good eye doctor has been available to prescribe magnifying glasses so you may finish that novel at long last , sew those newborn blankets and beat those crossword puzzles! That is all fine and well, but can you improve upon this concept of magnifying glasses when it is time for cataract surgery?

Yes, is the short answer. Though, beyond the scope of this article, there are a variety of options to help with the goal of unaided near or intermediate vision such as multifocal IOLs, monovision and blended vision. Let us focus on blended vision here.

When a cataract is removed, whether you are far-sighted, near sighted or just a perfect specimen of optical humanity, ie no need for distance glasses, you lose your ability to focus within a 2-3 foot range. This can be addressed, however, with some planning and thought. One of the well received and well tolerated options for patients opting for insurance covered single vision implants at the time of cataract surgery is blended vision. Instead of defaulting both eyes for distance and, thereby, sacrificing all near and mid range focusing ability, the non-dominant eye is purposefully targeted to mid range vision. This allows a significant increase in functional vision during day to day tasks such as cooking, grocery shopping, playing sports, seeing the instrument panel when driving, working at the computer etc. Glasses are still sometimes necessary for reading fine print, but tablets such as the iPad with font expansion at your fingertips have done away with even this exception for many patients. Even patients with significant astigmatism can benefit from blended vision if they have toric IOLs implanted.

By focusing the dominant eye, which some patients know as their ‘shooting eye’ or ‘aiming eye’, at distance, you cover the brain’s desire to have the dominant eye focus well at distance. The non-dominant eye then, is focused at a mid range target generally ~ 3 feet away or as desired by the patient. Alone, this eye then will not have the same sharpness as the dominant eye will at distance as it is focused on more near targets, but with both eyes, open the vision is seamless from midrange and beyond. It imparts a tremendous ability to a visual system that is, otherwise, dependent on bifocals or progressives to function.

Blended vision is not for everyone but has shown great success in a large group of patients in my practice. Some caveats to consider are the need for over the counter glasses to read small print, possible haloes at night when driving and time needed to adapt to this new vision for some patients.

In summary, cataract surgery has advanced in many ways and through careful planning and consultation, the patient may attain lifelong benefits by procedures such as blended vision.

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Customers wanting to take home a souvenir in the form of beer after visiting a brewpub in Forsyth County could soon have that option.

The Board of Commissioners discussed and voted unanimously March 22 to move forward with a public hearing regarding a proposed modification to the county’s alcohol ordinance that would allow brewpubs to sell packaged products.

County Attorney Ken Jarrard said brewpubs in the county are currently allowed to “brew beer, sell it to the folks who come and eat at the restaurant on site, manufacture up to 10,000 barrels of beer a year, can sell it at their restaurant, and then also manufacture up to 5,000 barrels of beer to sell to licensed wholesalers.”

“What we do not allow in the county is for them to manufacture their product for, what I’d call, ‘a true package sales experience,’” Jarrard said. “You can sell it to your customers in your restaurant and you can sell it to whole-

salers or I suppose wholesale delivery, but right now we do not allow you to sell it in true package sales, whether in growlers or any other sort of delivery system for package sales.”

This was brought TANNER up after Georgia Department of Revenue Commissioner Lynne Riley recently was reported as interpreting the existing Georgia law regarding brewpub growler sales as a local issue rather than a state issue.

There is an interest among some of Forsyth’s brewpub owners to sell their own products, Jarrard said. But Forsyth won’t be the first in the state to allow the new sales.

On March 11, Savannah passed an ordinance to allow brewpubs to sell growlers to-go. Then on March 21, Alpharetta passed a similar ordinance.

Nick Tanner, founder and brewmaster at Cherry Street Brewing Cooperating, said his company would “like the ability to obtain a beer and wine to-go license.”

“The city councilmen for Alpharetta were already working with their licensing department to have this license available, so once they voted ‘yes’ on it, it’d be something they could go and get,” Tanner said. “They’ve already made the strides we’re about to make.”

As for Cherry Street, Tanner said this will allow the business to be able to increase their tourism and internal revenue but also increase revenue within the county as well as increasing jobs.

Georgia had previously been one of two states in which brewpubs could not serve beer to-go, which has now changed, Tanner said. So the state is behind compared to surrounding states as far as internal development.

Brewpubs in surrounding states have a much bigger advantage of growing business more quickly, he said.

“Selling growlers will allow us to grow our distribution sales, and we look forward to that,” Tanner said to another media outlet earlier this month. “We’re planning to begin bottling later this year for distribution, and could use the extra sales to make it happen sooner.”

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — It’s no surprise or secret that Forsyth County is growing at a rapid pace.

Part of keeping up with an expanding county is maintaining all government facilities. So, to offset the pains that go along with that, the Board of Commissioners discussed March 22 the

county’s 20-year space plan to determine where future county buildings should go.

The total cost for the 20-year plan is $90.1 million, with 18 projects planned.

Chloe Jaco, project manager for the planning company CGL, said the county has a historic average annual growth rate of 4.8 percent over the last 10 years.

“The projected average annual growth is 4.6 percent for the next 20 years,” Jaco said. “There is an increase of 93 percent from 2015 to 2035, which is about 205,000 to 399,000 people.”

Jaco and the staff from CGL interviewed county staff, collected historical data and calculated existing space to determine the county’s forthcoming needs.

Most of the county’s facilities were rated on their general condition as “very good/good.” There were only four buildings, including the ones housing the department of health, the Juvenile Court and Lodge, original Courthouse, and Senior Center -Hearthstone Lodge, rated “fair/poor.”

Some of the goals for the county, Jaco said, include “locate general government functions in/near Cumming, local judicial functions in/near Cumming, continue public safety at Public Safety Center, continue public works functions at County Way and eliminate office space leases.”

One of the first steps the board took was the approval to move forward with bidding the construction of a new facility for voter registrations and elections, which was approved at the meeting.

Other recommendations included expanding the parking deck, consolidating all judicial functions except juvenile, which will get relocated to its own spot, expanding the mental health facility and expanding the public safety center.

Location picked for Forsyth’s alternative school

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — A location has been chosen for Forsyth County Schools’ planned alternative high school, Alliance Academy for Innovation of Cumming-Forsyth County Inc. The Forsyth County Board of Education approved a $3.1 million contract March 17 to buy the 23 acres from the city of Cumming. The school, which will have a focus of being a ninth- to 12th-grade nontraditional high school centered on workforce development, will be located at 1100 Lanier 400 Parkway off Ga. 400.

In August 2015, Valery Lowe, director of Workforce Development for FCS, said the design, architectural and engineering work would take between six to eight months. The academy would be comprised of a threestory building with 204,117 square feet. Inside would include labs, robotics field classrooms and “makerspace,” areas which are creative, do-it-yourself spaces where people can gather to create, invent and learn.

The sale had to be completed by March 17 so the Georgia Department of Education could approve the capital outlay funding in time for building to start. Construction is set to begin January 2017 and last 18 months until the academy opens potentially in August 2018.

A deal had to be reached between FCS and the city of Cumming for the location. Superintendent Jeff Bearden said “this is a good place.”

“They very much want this to happen, and at this location,” Bearden said of the city.

And on March 7, the city cut the ribbon on the new Lanier 400 Parkway extension. Mayor H. Ford Gravitt said he was excited the school would be located on this road and in the city.

County considers memorial to community member Tribute in Caney Creek Preserve for Jack Gleason

FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Jack Gleason, a longtime community activist who passed away last year, will soon be honored with a permanent memorial in Forsyth County.

The Board of Commissioners approved the Smart Growth Forsyth County plans to construct a monument in memory of Gleason in Caney Creek Preserve. Gleason was a member of SGFC and advocated often on various issues related to the county’s growth and environment.

Kristin Morrissey spoke on behalf of SGFC and said Gleason’s family gave their blessing for the memorial.

“We looked at ideas from renaming the entire park to a particular road, and we thought that didn’t quite seem appropriate for Jack, nor the park,” she said. “So we came up with adding

a section of the park that’s already there and creating an interpretive area, which is more in tune with his dreams for the environment, and more appropriate for the park.”

The group wants to install a wrought-iron or metal archway in the park leading into the interpretive area.

It will be funded solely from donations.

The parks and recreation department has already approved this project.

Once the group receives the final bid, they will go back to parks and recreation to move forward.

This is in Commissioner Brian Tam’s district. Tam said he knew Gleason for a long time.

“It’s a great testament to Jack,” Tam said. “He was one of a kind. It would be a nice tribute. He was fond of that park and was really adamant about the county acquiring it.”

A dedication ceremony is planned for this summer.

Here we are four years later, and it is politics as usual. I received an email from Sen. Johnny Isakson, one of my favorite Georgia politicians. He was a Republican when it was an uphill battle in this state.

I thought him a reasonable conservative who spoke for the little guy.

When he ran for the Senate, his sign was in my yard.

Yesterday, an email to me laid out his reasons for refusing to consider any Supreme Court nomination made by the current president. He said it should be done after a new president was sworn in so that the “will of the people” could be carried out.

I emailed him back my reply, but I am realistic enough to doubt his staff will pass it along to him to read personally. So I am sharing it with my readers who may: Johnny, The Constitution is clear about the process for choosing a Supreme Court justice. It makes no mention of the “will of the people,” as they are voting for a

president, not a Supreme Court justice.

It is sad that the presidential appointments appear to be made with an eye to packing the court with likeminded jurists, to make a philosophical ally of the court for whatever political wing has the power. Each party has been guilty of it and justifies it with an appeal “to the greater good.”

The genius of the founding fathers was to create a third branch of government in what my 11th-grade history teacher Mr. Hunt told me was the “balance of power” among the administrative, legislative and judicial branches of government.

The late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia would, I think, be scandalized at such a nakedly partisan effort being infused into the selection of his replacement that clearly contravenes the founding fathers’ intentions.

Scalia made Supreme Court history by introducing the concept of “originalism” into the Supreme Court’s decisionmaking. Originalism is Scalia’s term for weighing the constitutionality of laws by the measure of what exactly the founding fathers intend.

In 1789, their intention in creating the Supreme Court was not to make it a political ally for a president or for Congress, the court being a body that would be beyond the control of voters.

Quite the opposite, it was intended to be a council of the best jurists in the land to act as a check and balance between the other two seats of government. Or so Mr. Hunt told me.

It was wrong of Vice President Joe Biden to suggest the same such thing then, when the choice was for a lameduck Republican president, and it is wrong to suggest it now.

The temptation has always been

Bad government is bad government, especially since it allows the other side the same loophole when the tables – as invariably happens – are turned. there. For example, it was wrong for President Franklin Roosevelt to try to pack the Supreme Court by adding more judges to try to get more of his New Deal measures past Supreme Court scrutiny in the 1930s. FDR’s motives were pure; they just weren’t constitutional.

Bad government is bad government, especially since it allows the other side the same loophole when the tables – as invariably happens – are turned.

It is the president’s prerogative and duty to choose the justice’s successor.

It is the duty of the Senate to offer advice and its consent.

The Constitution says nothing about withholding its consent in the hopes of finding a suitably doctrinaire nominee at a later date and with a friendlier face in the White House.

It is crass Washington politics at its worst and goes to the root cause of the growing disgust by the public for our government’s institutions today.

The secret to America’s success as the leader of the free world has been our willingness to uphold its institu-

tions even if it is politically at odds with the situation of the day.

Every four years we observe “the most powerful person on earth” accept a second term or relinquish that power to another as chosen by the people. Of course the president cannot serve a third term.

Holding the president’s nominee hostage for almost a year in the unvarnished hope that a Republican can replace Justice Scalia casts a sad shadow across the entire country.

It only raises further calumny on how our entire constitutional process works when the Republicans and Democrats adopt exactly the reverse of the political position they once evinced when they find the political winds have shifted.

We like to invoke the founding fathers – Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Monroe and Madison — to justify our politics.

We do them no honor with this base perversion of the judicial system they so carefully constructed.

And what is the excuse offered?

“Well, the other side said the same thing last time.”

If mere political expediency justifies spurning the intent of the Constitution, what does that say about us as a country? You should be ashamed. The country is ashamed.

P.S. Is it any wonder more and more voters are growing tired of such overt cynicism from our elected officials?

Don’t they know many of us love this country most because of the system of government it purports to perpetuate?

The cynicism with which parties value partisanship over that system is a slap in our faces.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

MARTA not the answer to NF congestion Many North Fulton elected officials, including mayors of Alpharetta and Johns Creek and concerned citizens, made the correct decision to not support the $2.5 billion MARTA extension from North Point to Windward Parkway.

Addressing major traffic congestion on state highways and municipal arterial road networks are key to both workforce potential and maintaining the quality of life of residents. Expanding MARTA in North Fulton was not the answer.

HB 170 “Transportation Act” was an

excellent comprehensive bill to address this critical area throughout the state, and Georgia Department of Transportation has four major efforts in North Fulton, and the proposed MARTA project unnecessarily duplicates these.

These four efforts include: • Ga. 400/I-285 interchange improvements, • Ga. 400 widening ($2 billion) with addition of two dedicated express lanes in each direction from I-285 to McFarland Road which would handle bus rapid transit, • Widening Ga. 400 from McFarland

Road northward ($2 billion) • Adding new ramps at McGinnis Ferry Road.

All of these efforts are already either in design or execution and all are targeted for completion in the 2022-23 time frame and years before any MARTA extension would be available.

Numerous past independent studies, including a major effort by Georgia Public Policy Foundation in 2013, demonstrated MARTA expansion was not a viable, cost-effective solution to addressing current needs for reducing

major traffic congestion.

Remember T-SPLOST’s defeat several years ago was due to the excessive $500 million funding for MARTA expansion (now $2.5 billion), which was shown to have terrible cost/benefit analyses.

There has been no evidence presented by proponents of this year’s proposal to extend MARTA to Windward Parkway that addresses the deficiencies identified in past independent studies or demonstrates it is a logical and

CUMMING, Ga. — Schwetha Mudalegundi, South Forsyth High School senior and Winship Scholar at the Winship Cancer Institute at Emory University, is part of a group of scientists who have seen their research on thyroid cancers published by the Journal of Thyroid Disorders and Therapy this month. The paper identifies the role of different imaging modalities in the management of well differentiated thyroid cancer.

Mudalegundi credits her interest in scientific research to her seventh grade science fair experience. When she arrived at South Forsyth four years ago, she emailed professors at the University of Georgia, University of Alabama, Georgia Tech and Emory to see if any would be interested in having a high school student assist in their research work.

Pinecrest hires Terrance Vinson as head varsity boys coach

Steps up from role as assistant coach

By JOE PARKER news@appenmediagroup.com CUMMING, Ga. — After five straight losing seasons, the Pinecrest Academy boys varsity team will look to turn things around with a new head coach at the helm. Pinecrest announced last week that Terrance Vinson is the new varsity boys head basketball coach.

Vinson, who joined the school as the Lower School physical education teacher last year, takes over the head coach role after serving as an assistant on the team this past season.

Vinson, who attended Lowndes High School in Valdosta, where he was named Region Player of the Year in 2004, is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he also played basketball.

Vinson played in 28 games for the Hokies and was named team captain his senior year.

Before joining Pinecrest in 2015, Vinson held coaching positions at Virginia Tech, Mercer University and as basketball strength and conditioning coach at Georgia Southern University.

He also served as a middle school girls coach in Blacksburg, Virginia.

“I am excited, honored and humbled to have been selected for the position of varsity boys basketball head coach VINSON and can’t wait to get on the court with our players in the next few months,” said Vinson. “My intent is to develop the entire basketball program at Pinecrest, including the varsity, JV, middle school and recreational teams, and create a Pinecrest brand for this already vibrant program.”

Chris Kane, athletic director at Pinecrest, said he is pleased

to have Vinson take over the boys varsity program.

“Terrance embodies everything we are trying to accomplish here at Pinecrest. I am really excited that he has accepted this position,” said Kane. “I’m extremely excited about the future of Pinecrest basketball.”

Vinson replaced Jay Lynch, who was with the program for 10 years as JV boys head coach, girls varsity head coach and, the last three seasons, boys varsity head coach, where he compiled a 33-45 record.

Vinson takes over the program in a year that will see Pinecrest lose five top performers to graduation, including Zayne Rice who led the team in points, rebounds, steals and blocks last season.

The Paladins will return John Crone, who averaged 11.1 points per game, 3.3 rebounds per game, and had 15 blocks on the season. Kent

CHRIS KANE Athletic director at Pinecrest Tagge, a rising senior, will also return for the Paladins. Tagge was third on the team in rebounds last year and compiled 12 steals and 13 blocks in 22 games.

Since joining the Georgia High School Association after moving from the Georgia Independent School Association in the 2010-11 season, Pinecrest has yet to have a winning season or a state playoff appearance.

Community enjoys Taste of Forsyth, Easter egg hunt

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — Rain didn’t dampen the spirits of residents who were hungry to try new local cuisine March 26 at the Taste of Forsyth.

Samples ranging in price from $1 to $4 were offered by area restaurants including Tam’s Backstage, Williamson Bros. Bar-B-Q, Bruster’s Real Ice Cream, Hungry Howie’s, Roly Poly Sandwiches, Castleberry Ale House, Texas Roadhouse, Baba’s Gyro’s & Kabobs, Rio Balsas, Mellow Mushroom and Taste Jamaica.

Multiple Easter egg hunts were scheduled throughout the day for the younger attendees. In total, 25,000 eggs were scattered about for the children.

Shannon Reichardt’s children, Victor and Hannah, participated in the egg hunts.

“We’ve been coming to this for years,” Reichardt said. “It’s been cool to see the crowd grow.”

St. Baldrick’s a cut above other fundraisers Supports pediatric cancer research with check and a (close) haircut

Why, a St. Baldrick’s Foundation head-shaving and fundraiser like the one March 20 at the Olde Blind Dog in Milton.

Organized by Milton and Alpharetta firefighters, EMTs and police officers, this St. Baldrick’s event has a special meaning at the Olde Blind Dog because it honors one of the pub’s own – Kierstin Dickson. She died just three days shy of her 21st birthday. Her first job had been as a server at Olde Blind Dog. “Kierstin was the most optimistic, positive person you could hope to meet,” said her dad, John Dickson.

“She always had a smile on her face.

She made everyone she met her friend.”

Dickson remembered his daughter was a big Harry Potter fan as well as a dedicated student. Kierstin took every AP and honors class she could, and was also athletic, playing soccer from the age of 4. She went off to the University of West Georgia to play soccer in college. In the blink of an eye, she called up to say she didn’t feel well and was coming home.

It was a stage 4 cancer. She fought it for two years.

“When she died, we had been planning to have her 21st birthday at Olde Blind Dog. From the first time we came here, we just fell in love with the place.

When Kierstin came to us and said she wanted to get a job, we told her to ask here. They’re good people,” Dickson said.

“So instead of her birthday, we had a good Irish wake instead. Hundreds of people turned out for it. It was a heck

The foundation got its start when a group of businessmen decided to challenge each other to raise money for childhood cancer research by soliciting subscriptions for shaving their heads. St. Baldrick is, of course, fictional but does contain the word “bald.”

So why shave their heads? Many cancer treatments can cause a patient’s hair to fall out. So, in addition to their disease, they must suffer the torment of “being different.” Shaving heads is a way for supporters to show in a personal way their solidarity with all young cancer victims who are fighting the disease.

Worldwide, there are 750,000 juveniles diagnosed annually with cancer – including more than a dozen cancers specific to youngsters. Yet of all the money raised for cancer research, less than 4 percent is devoted to pediatric cancer research by the National Cancer Institute.

In the last 30 years, only three new drugs have been approved specifically for children with cancer.

St. Baldrick’s Foundation grants go to change lives of pediatric cancer victims in three areas: 1. Without a single new discovery, 30 percent more teenagers with cancer could be cured simply by giving them pediatric – not adult – cancer treatments.

2. Some 95 percent of childhood cancer survivors will have chronic health problems by age 45 due to treatments they received as juveniles. Of those, 80 percent will have life-threatening conditions.

3. Supportive care and symptom management along with family coping skills help the whole family deal with the child’s cancer.

Hartman had dyed his hair green, not that it was going to last long. His was one of the first heads shaved.

“This is my seventh year. So I’ve been ‘knighted’ into St. Baldrick’s. It is just a great cause,” he said.

Hartman said he usually keeps his hair fairly short, but he has been letting it grow just for this event.

Dickson pronounced the event “awesome.”

“Seeing so many people here [easily

more than 200], it reminds me how many lives Kierstin touched,” he said.

“So today is important. We don’t want anyone else to lose their kids.”

St. Baldrick’s head-shaving events began as a challenge between businessmen and have grown from one event in 2000 to over 1,300 events in 2013, raising critical funds for childhood cancer research. Events take place in pubs, restaurants, schools, churches, parks, malls, military bases, firehouses and any other place you can imagine.

Wallace makes two things clear in his slim but information-packed volume. Thing No. 1 is leadership is not rocket science. But it does take adherence to certain principles and accountability – accepting your share of accountability and demanding it of others.

Thing No. 2 is everything Wallace learned about leadership came from his time spent in the UPS corporate culture of “we not me.”

As a man who has conquered every hill he chose to climb, one has to ask why write this book on leadership, and why now.

As to the now, Wallace said he has been “pestered” for some time by friends both in corporate UPS and from outside. But the kicker came after speaking and giving talks at some of America’s top colleges and universities.

“I began to sense that these students were not getting what they needed in school. In my career, I’ve seen the good, the bad and the ugly.

I’ve seen all kinds of cultures in the 150-plus countries I’ve visited,” he said.

“So I thought maybe I have something different to say. And I can say it with my experience based on leadership

So don’t expect a book full of theories and Venn diagrams. This book is based on his experiences in all sorts of situations. And what he learned, Wallace says anyone can learn.

What has shaped Wallace and T:\ADS_2015\NFAYP remains at the core of what he believes

about leadership comes in a straight line from Jim Casey and Claude Ryan.

They were the teenagers in 1907 who started what would become United Parcel Service with one bicycle and $100 they borrowed from a friend. This was when a stamp cost one cent.

Metro Atlanta housing market among hottest in the country More homes were bought in the metro Atlanta area in February than in any other major metropolitan area in the country — and that is despite also having one of the lowest supplies GEOFF SMITH of inventory.

Assurance Financial, gsmith@lendtheway.com According to data compiled by Redfin, there were 6,389 homes sold in metro Atlanta in February. That was about 100 more than what was sold in Chicago, and about 600 more than in Dallas-Fort Worth. Other cities in the top 10 last month were Phoenix, Houston, Washington D.C., Detroit-Warren, Los Angeles, Tampa and Boston. Of all cities in the top 10 last month, Atlanta had the second-lowest inventory as measured in months of supply.

To me, this is a good measure of just how competitive a market is. More houses were bought in Atlanta than anywhere else, yet Atlanta has one of the lowest supplies of houses. That means a lot of homebuyers are fighting over fewer houses.

Redfin estimated that in February, there were three months of supply on the market — meaning if no new houses were listed, the metro area would sell out of houses in three months. Of the top 10, only DallasFort Worth had a lower supply at 2.4 months.

Having a low inventory means we are in a very lean market. Most experts consider four to six months of inventory healthy. If inventory is lower than that, then home values could rise too quickly. If it is much higher than that, then home prices could remain stagnant — or even drop like they did

in Little Rock, Arkansas. That city had 7.4 months of supply, and median sales prices dropped by 0.7 percent over the last year.

Inventories were below two months in Seattle, Oakland and Portland. And in all three of those cities, median sales prices rose over 10 percent in the last year. So if Atlanta is lean, then these cities are malnourished.

Median sales prices in metro Atlanta rose 5.6 percent from February of last year. That may not sound like a lot, but if you wanted to buy a house that was worth $400,000 last year, you’d have to pay $422,500 this year.

It isn’t the 11.5 percent increase that Seattle saw last year, but it would add about $110 to your monthly mortgage payment.

The metro Atlanta economy is going well. It added more than 7,000 jobs last month. And you can be sure that many of those jobs were given to people who transferred to Atlanta from another city, thus increasing the number of homebuyers and helping to keep that inventory low. Homebuilders are trying to increase the capacity, but when our economy busted in 2008, most of the skilled labor left for other

industries (or left the country). Builders are competing against one another to secure workers to build their homes. As a result, it’s taking longer for them to build homes, and they are having to pay workers more, which is pushing up prices of those new homes.

This is a good problem for a city to have. Hudson Valley, New York, had 9.7 months of inventory and median sales prices dropped 3.8 percent from January to February of this year. We are a little spoiled in the metro area.

The problems we complain about stem from heavy job creation and a low cost of living, which has created a strong desire for people to want to move here.

Maxum will maintain its brand and limited wholesale distribution model and will be managed as a separate unit within The Hartford’s Small Commercial business.

All Maxum employees will be offered continued employment at close and Maxum will remain headquartered in Alpharetta.

The transaction, which will not have a material impact on The Hartford’s financial results, is expected to close in the third quarter of 2016, subject to obtaining regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

Leadership: Continued from Page 14 is equal, and everyone addresses each other by using first names. It is done in part to instill the company has one goal: To deliver – with the best possible service and at the lowest possible rates.

Wallace got that lesson driven home when he first met Casey. Wallace was wrestling with a battery starter, trying to start a delivery car (they don’t call them trucks) when an old man walked up – Wallace recognized him as Casey – and offered to give him a hand getting the vehicle started.

Casey then struck up a conversation with Wallace, asking what he liked about the job, what he thought might be any worthwhile changes. Above all, Casey let Wallace know he was a member of a team, and that his time and ideas were valuable to the company.

It was a meeting and a lesson Wallace has never forgotten.

As he made his way up the ladder, his perceptions about leadership changed with the job, but each time it was to fine-tune the goal: deliver.

And the unspoken corollary was that it would be done as a team.

As president of UPS International, Wallace met many world leaders, and he said he learned from nearly all of them – even if it was what not to do.

But it was his lessons from Brown that served him best.

Each of the book’s chapters offers examples Wallace has drawn from his experiences that paint the path to becoming a better leader. Among the topics he details with vivid clarity are:

• Overcoming inertia/embracing new technology: Change is inevitable, and demonstrating to the team how and why changes must be made is often hard to do. It is easy to fall in the trap of “playing it safe.”

Atlanta named fastestaging city in America

By KATHLEEN STURGEON kathleen@appenmediagroup.com ATLANTA — Atlanta is one of the nation’s largest cities in terms of population, but now, according to Forbes, it is also one of the fastest-aging areas.

In February, Forbes released an article saying by 2050, the number of Americans over age 65 will be 81.7 million, which is almost double what it is currently. In addition, they will comprise about 21 percent of the population, up from the current 15 percent.

Locally, Forbes said the senior population of 65 and older Atlanta inhabitants grew 20 percent between 2010 and 2014.

The surrounding metro cities may be feeling the pressure of making accommodations for their growing senior populations as well. To do this, independent senior living locations are being developed.

One of these is the Mansions at Alpharetta, 3675 Old Milton Parkway, set to open in fall 2016.

Kim Davis, one of the owners and partners for Mansions Senior Living, said they believe being a family owned and operated senior community allows them to be more in touch with the needs of seniors.

Learn about trout fishing at the NGTO ‘Spring Fling’ This weekend offers a fine opportunity for a day of family fun outdoors – and a chance to learn about trout fishing in Georgia at the same time.

Saturday, April STEVE HUDSON 2, marks the date Get Outside Georgia, Chattahoochee Media Group of the annual North Georgia Trout Online Spring Fling at the Buford Trout Hatchery, just off Ga. 20 a few miles east of Ga. 400.

NGTO (www.ngto.org) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promotion and protection of trout fishing in North Georgia. This online community works to protect and enhance trout fishing on several fronts. Its activities include a significant outreach program which supports a variety of educational and environmental stewardship programs as well as a fishingfocused online message board. The group has “a firm commitment to the future of trout fishing in Georgia” and “strives to increase public awareness of the sport of trout fishing.”

The Spring Fling is a familyfriendly gathering of trout fishing enthusiasts held each year at the hatchery.

Whatever your interest in fishing or conservation, the NGTO Spring Fling is an event you’re sure to enjoy.

This year’s Spring Fling features a variety of activities ranging from an on-the-water fishing workshop to an introductory fly-tying class. Experienced fly casters enjoy the always popular casting games which allow participants to put their skills to the

test – and if you don’t yet know how to cast a fly rod, there will be plenty of folks on hand who will be glad to share their time and teach you how.

There will also be plenty of fishing-related demonstrations for you to see and enjoy.

Despite the “trout” in NGTO, it’s not just about trout. NGTOers enjoy talking about other types of fishing, too. In fact, this year’s Spring Fling program includes a seminar (starting at about 10 a.m.) on fishing for striped bass in rivers.

There will also be plenty of door prizes and auction items, including a special raffle for a boat. Proceeds go to help support the organization’s activities.

A barbecue lunch will be served.

And, as another highlight, you and your family can enjoy a tour of the trout hatchery. The tour starts at the hatchery office at 1 p.m. No advance registration is required for the tour – just show up at the hatchery office at 1 p.m. Kids in particular will enjoy this tour, which includes an opportunity to feed some of the hatchery trout.

You may also enjoy wetting a line in the site’s family fishing pond. Kids under 16 can fish for free, but any angler 16 or older will need to have a fishing license.

Can’t make the Spring Fling? You’ll be glad to know that there’s an NGTO Fall Fling, too, held each fall at the same location.

Forsyth Farm Bureau members attend GFB Day at Capitol ATLANTA — Forsyth County Farm Bureau members traveled to Atlanta February 4 to participate in Georgia Farm Bureau Day at the Capitol. While at the capitol, members of the Forsyth County Farm Bureau delegation visited with John Wilkerson of the Senate Ag Committee.

Members of the Forsyth County Farm Bureau who attended the event included Wesley Hall, President of the Forsyth County Farm Bureau.

The Forsyth County delegation was among the Farm Bureau members from across the state to participate in the event.

Participants were encouraged to raise legislators’ awareness of GFB’s 2016 priority issues – animal agriculture, water, state tax and budget matters.

“Today is your opportunity to talk to your legislators and let them know what you think,” GFB President Gerald Long said. “As you talk to your elected officials, be sure to thank them for their help and tell them about our priority issues, not just today but when you see them on the streets back home.”

Deal said his proposed budget includes an additional $1 million in funding for the Georgia Department of Agriculture to renovate state farmers markets and replace about 25 cars used by GDA employees who travel across the state with their jobs.

“As we see an evolution in how people think about their food and the way they get it, farmers mar kets are becoming more vital,” Deal said.

Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture Gary Black asked county Farm Bureaus to encourage their local school boards to participate in the 20/20 Vision program the GDA is working on with the Georgia Department of Education.

Black said the program aims to see that all meals served in school cafeterias include at least 20 percent Georgia Grown commodities.

“Being in schools is second nature to county Farm Bureaus with your Ag in the Classroom programs,” Black said. “It’s not going to be about the Georgia Department of Agriculture or Department of Education telling schools what to do but it’s about all county groups encouraging local school boards to participate in this program.”

Students Selected to perform at theater awards FORSYTH COUNTY, Ga. — ArtsBridge Foundation, the arts education outreach arm of the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, announced March 4 the 96 actors and actresses who will perform in the Shuler Student Ensemble at the 2016 Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards – Shuler Hensley Awards.

Additionally, the organization revealed the 32 members of its 2016 Students Take A Role Council who will serve as production assistants for the April 21 awards show that celebrates excellence in high school musical theater.

The Shuler Student Ensemble features talented young men and women nominated by their high school directors.

The students represent public and private schools and will perform the Shuler Awards opening and finale numbers.

They will be instructed by a professional team that includes a director, choreographer, music director, and Tony award-winner Shuler Hensley.

These problems and appropriate approaches require municipalities to formulate their programs to address mobility improvement projects (roads, bridges, traffic control) and to request, through ballot, a five-year 1 percent sales tax to pay for these.
