The youth program is composed of 10 high school Habitat for Humanity clubs and campus chapters throughout North Central Georgia, involving more than 300 high school students who participate in Habitat builds. “I feel proud knowing that I have helped to further Habitat for Humanity’s mission through the next generation. Now I am passing that torch on to Jennifer, who will continue working with our Youth United program after I am gone.” Taffe began working for the Roswell-based Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia in July 2015, following an internship with the Atlanta chapter. “I knew I wanted to work for a nonprofit organization when I graduated from college, and Habitat is such a well-known and respected organization that it seemed like the perfect place to begin my career,” said Taffe, a Marietta native who graduated from UGA in 2015. While her business card says “Administrative and Marketing Assistant,” Taffe says she wears a number of hats around the office, including fundraising, working on sites, coordinating logistics such as transportation and food, and updating the website. But the part of her job she loves most is educating volunteers on the work of Habitat for Humanity. “So many times people come on site with the misconception that Habitat is a homeless ministry and they will be building a home for someone who does not have anywhere to live and is coming in from downtown Atlanta,” explains Taffe. Instead, she says, many of the homeowners are from communities the homes are being built in, and include people you meet every day in schools, at the grocery store and in service professions like law enforcement and health care services. “[Our homeowners] include all the unsung heroes of the community that truly do make the community function,” said Taffe. “[Our volunteers] learn that there is need everywhere, even in their own backyard. The more awareness there is, the more good can be done to help.” Taffe said in affluent areas, such as the north metro Atlanta area, there are few reminders of the need for affordable housing. This is where nonprofits, such as Habitat for Humanity, help close that gap. “There’s a [general] lack of awareness from the community regarding perceived need,” said Taffe. “Many people assume just because they don’t see a need it must not be there — but many times the need is just as great in affluent areas.” She said the goal of Habitat is to be a “hand up” not a handout, and to provide longterm solutions for their clients to improve their living situations. Prospective homeowners go through a rigorous selection process, completing classes in homeownership, and help to build not only their own homes but also homes for others for “sweat equity.” “Habitat for Humanity seeks to improve not only the immediate circumstances of people’s lives but also aims to create long-term solutions to impact generations to come,” said Taffe. “This is why Habitat was so appealing to me, and why I think it is so well respected not only nationally but internationally as well.” ■

Habitat for Humanity International was founded in 1976 by Millard and Linda Fuller in Americus, Georgia. Since its founding, Habitat for Humanity has built over 1,000,000 homes around the world. In January 2006, the affiliates in North Fulton, Cherokee, Forsyth and Dawson Counties merged to form Habitat for Humanity-North Central Georgia in order to address the growing housing need in the region. Since its founding, the chapter has built more than 260 homes, 100 of those in North Fulton. The Importance of

Buyer Representation Using a highly qualified real estate professional to help a buyer with the purchase of their next home is possibly the smartest thing they could do.

Components a good agent brings:

• Represents only the buyer in a real estate transaction with expert skill, contract knowledge, negotiating savvy and professional resources. • A team of proven professionals to assist a buyer with attorneys, inspectors and trades people. • We never act as a dual agent representing both Buyer and Seller in the same transaction.

Points to note:

• If sales commissions are paid by the seller, having your own buyers agent to protect your interests frequently costs you very little, usually nothing at all. • When purchasing new construction, having buyer representation is smart because purchasing a new home can be more complicated than buying a resale home and the on-site agent always represents the Builders best interests.

The Kloster Group:

Our experience in buying and selling more than 70 homes per year on average provides us with a huge tactical advantage allowing us to obtain the best price, the best terms, and the most creative solutions to our clients’ problems. When you understand our philosophy “You make your money in real estate when you buy, you collect it when you sell” - You can see why we feel that having the best buyer representation is so important. When you choose to work with us, we earn your respect and your future business. Allison & Peter Kloster

The goal of de gratitude

Forsyth entrepreneur finds success with gift basket business By CANDY WAYLOCK

iane Campbell’s inner business compass always pointed to “entrepreneur.” She earned a degree in communication design, dabbled in woodworking, drafting and gourmet foods, and at the point in her life where her kids were grown, looked to start a business that combined all her loves and interests. “I transitioned from being at home with [my three daughters] to starting the journey of self-discovery, selfimprovement and entrepreneurship,” said Campbell, a New Jersey native who moved to Forsyth County in 1991 with her husband, Dan. “I wanted to blend my love of food, design and gratitude into the world of business.” She founded Gratitude Goodies in 2009 – just as the economy was headed into a tailspin, taking many small business with it. But Campbell saw the economic challenges as a speed bump, and knew success would come in small steps, not giant leaps. “I knew that it would take time to build my business so I began [Gratitude Goodies] in the basement of my home,” said Campbell. “[From the beginning] the higher goal of gratitude is still the motivating factor driving my business today.” Gratitude Goodies specializes in gift baskets primarily for corporate clients, covering the gamut of expressions from “Thank you,” to “Congratulations,” to “Let’s celebrate,” and nearly anything else the customer can think of — and Gratitude Goodies can deliver. Campbell says the baskets can be personalized for each client, and she works closely with her clients to come up with the right look for their company. “It can mean custom ribbon, custom design elements like our signature custom truffle boxes that we design in house with special software,” she noted. “We are mindful of what a corporate client would want [since] corporate clients want a corporate look. “ Through word of mouth and a reputation for quality products, Gratitude Goodies was soon “bulging at the seams,” said Campbell. After four years, the business moved from her basement into an industrial space, and expanded to a staff of four (eight during peak times). “Our growth has happened faster than we expected and we are pleasantly pleased with it,” Campbell said. “I found the keys to growing the business in a challenging economy relied on networking, building relationships, and above all, delivering a quality product at a fair price.” Today, Campbell said it’s not unusual to be handling thousands of gift baskets during the holiday season and throughout the year, with businesses ordering from 100 to more than 1,000 baskets in a single order. She also gladly fills individual orders for baskets, although the company does not have a retail

presence. Baskets can be delivered locally, regionally and nationally, and her clients include nearly every sector of the business world. Like the customers she serves, Campbell said the core value of any business is client retention and client appreciation. She knows her clients send baskets in gratitude to their employees and customers, and Campbell understands that importance. “When we walk through the door with a beautiful sweet or savory gift basket we call it the ‘shock and awe’ moment,” Campbell says. “Recipients are shocked they were thought of in such a beautiful way, which is always followed by an ‘awe,’ they thought of me! It’s always a win-win.” Campbell said starting a business is “not for the faint of heart.” She said while success came relatively quickly for Gratitude Goodies, there were many hiccups along the way that required a level of toughness to continue moving forward. Hiring Marian McMichael as her business manager in the first year of business was one of her best decisions, she adds, since McMichael has a strong business background. “Nothing can fully prepare you for entrepreneurship though,” said Campbell. “It requires an ‘all in’ attitude that carries an ebb and flow of emotions and highs and lows.”

women in business

Looking forward, Campbell said she’s thinking big when it comes to Gratitude Goodies. “The desire to become the largest gift company in the industry is never far from a conversation in our planning meeting,” she said, with a laugh. “But in the seven years we have been in business, we are where we wanted to be, but are always looking forward and ahead. The sky is the limit!” For more information about Gratitude Goodies, visit their website at http:// www.gratitudegoodies.com. ■

StyleSlam at the American Craft Show F

PHOTOS BY SUZANNE PACEY/STAFF

or over 70 years, the American Craft Council (ACC) has been championing American artists who create contemporary art in several mediums. The ACC is a nonprofit organization that promotes appreciation of contemporary art all over the nation by connecting with local art institutions, educational institutions and emerging artists. In turn, the ACC hosts wholesale and public craft shows. The public can attend four fabulous shows of juried art that feature over 200 American artisans, including 25 from Georgia. The American Craft Show locations are San Francisco, St. Paul, Minnesota, Baltimore and Atlanta. In March, the Cobb Galleria hosted the Atlanta show. It was an attentiongrabbing gathering of American artists who create high-quality wearable art in silk, leather, felted wool, glass, enamel and other fibers. In 2016, the ACC added another aspect to the craft show. The goal is to encourage the public not to just come and look at the arts and crafts, but to understand how the various wearable pieces can be incorporated into everyday wardrobes. The Style Slam invites local stylists and models to highlight the melding of wearable fashion and art. During the three-day celebration of all things handmade, local fashion stylists “slammed” the various booths that featured wearable art, meaning they looked for their favorite pieces to highlight on their live models and mannequins. When the stylists were ready for their big reveal, Grant Whittaker, ACC’s style ambassador from Minnesota, emceed a spontaneous fashion show. A stylist in his own right, Whittaker interviewed local stylists and asked why they chose to feature individual pieces of art worn by their models and mannequins. Show attendees were encouraged to view the dialog and enjoy the live fashion event in the middle of the main display hall. Elizabeth Morgan Spiegel is an ACC patron and an enthusiastic model for this

year’s Style Slam. Originally from Arkansas, Spiegel has loved art all her life. Her favorite aspect of ACC is seeing the creativity of the various artists every year. Atlanta stylist Shaye Strager perused the various booths and chose an opera-length necklace in antique gold tones for Spiegel to wear. The threedimensional Italian leaves on the necklace created by Paz Sintes look akin to barbed wire, but the secret is the material used in creating it. Italian cottonlurex-polyamide-linen is embroidered and hand stitched to create this dramatic, ultra light necklace. Soft, huggable and snagproof, the jewelry was a complementary contrast to the seemingly delicate coral tunic with ruching at the sleeve and waist worn by Spiegel. Atlanta stylist Jill Veysey, who sports a retro style and loves anything vintage, chose to highlight a collar of colorful succulents made of felt created by Danielle Gori-Montanelli. Paired with a vivid green floor-length vintage dress in a goddess style and updo, her model looked like a fanciful forest fairy. Ann Vincent is a Buckhead artist who is fairly new to the wearable art industry, but her wares show a deep knowledge of various dying techniques. An art major and a former interior designer, her artist’s eye helps her create truly unique scarves, vests and coats. Silk and merino wool are dyed and shaped to create real works of art that can be worn casually or to gala events. Lest you think this event is only for the fashion forward looking for that particular statement piece, the American Craft Council also hosts artists who create furniture, interior décor, toys, musical instruments and ceramics. Robert Patterson, a Milton artist who had a booth at the American Craft Show, was recently featured in the Milton Herald for his work in wood forms. Don't miss next year's show in Atlanta. Check out http://craftcouncil. org/shows/2017 for details and times. If you need help deciding what great statement jacket, necklace or scarf to add to your wardrobe, I would be happy to help you look your personal best. ■

3 Simple steps to replenish healthy skin

E

ach season, your skin changes. Make sure you adjust your health & beauty care accordingly. In spring, the goal is to remove the dry, rough skin caused by winter so that you can reveal replenished healthy skin. Here is a quick step-by-step guide:

1. EXOFLIATE FACIAL SKIN WITH MICRODERMABRASION, a peel, or an enzyme mask.

Exfoliate body skin with a sugar or salt scrub. Removing the dead skin allows for your products to better penetrate into the skin for optimal benefit! Exfoliating is quick and penny-wise.

2. REPLENISH FACIAL SKIN WITH A FACIAL HERBAL OIL, hyaluronic acid, anti-oxidant or stem-cell serum.

3. PROTECT FACIAL SKIN WITH VITAMIN C AND a 30spf sunscreen & moisturizer. Protect facial skin with Vitamin C and a SPF30 sunscreen & moisturizer. Increase to SPF50 if you use retinol or hydroquinone. Protect your hands with SPF, too! Sun rays come through your windshield and can promote dark spots on your hands. Protect your body with a moisturizer with sunscreen, too. Remember, that most sunscreens only last about 2 hours. Keep sunscreen in your car/purse/gym bag etc for convenient reapplication. Your beauty lies in health & self-confidence. Enjoy spring & make time to take care of yourself. ■ Judy van Heiningen, Kyle Lemmick, & Meredith Featherstone Facelogic Spa in Roswell

Academy Award for Best ... Fiction By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI kathy@appenmediagroup.com

B

ook lovers and movie fans have long had much in common, and nothing better illustrates the undeniable bond between the two camps than the 2016 Academy Awards. No fewer than nine nominated films were either adapted from or inspired by books, including all five nominees in the Adapted Screenplay category — “The Big Short,” “Brooklyn,” “Carol,” “Room” and “The Martian.” This year’s Best Picture and Best Actor categories were similarly filled with adaptations. “The Revenant,” with 12 Academy Award nominations, the most for any film this year, was based in part on a novel by Michael Punke. “The Danish Girl,” with four nominations, was inspired by David Ebershoff’s novel. And “Steve Jobs,” which credits the 2011 Walter Isaacson biography of the same name as a major source for the screenplay, earned Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress nods. Literary-minded moviegoers have long had much to love from Hollywood, as Pat Conroy proved time and again. Prior to his death March 4, four of Conroy’s 13 books had been made into movies, including a pair of Oscar-nominated films, “The Prince

To Kill a Mockingbird

By Harper Lee Conroy’s passing wasn’t the only recent death to rock the literary world. When Lee died Feb. 19, it was front-page news everywhere, thanks to her masterpiece published in 1960 and voted “Best Novel of the Century” in a Library Journal poll. Generally understood to be inspired by racial attitudes in Lee’s Alabama hometown, Monroeville, readers may be interested to know that, from Atlanta, the real-life model for Maycomb is just 265 miles, as the mockingbird flies.

Gone With the Wind

By Margaret Mitchell Suffice it to say that, whether you are an Atlanta native or not, this book should be required reading for residency anywhere in the greater metro area. Then, when you’ve finished all 1,037 pages — and you truly will drink in every last page — go visit the Margaret Mitchell house and maybe Mitchell’s Oakland Cemetery gravesite before ordering your copy of the 70th anniversary ultimate collector’s edition of the movie.

Forrest Gump

By Winston Groom Whether you love or hate the movie, there’s no denying it’s just plain fun to stand in the same spot where so much of an iconic motion picture was filmed. You can do that the next time you’re in Savannah. Just find Chippewa Square and, while the actual bench Tom Hanks occupied with his box of chocolates is in the Savannah History Museum, you’ll know you’re in the right spot by the tour guides circling round and round, telling their “Forrest Gump” tales to movie lovers hanging on every word.

of Tides” and “The Great Santini,” as well as “The Lords of Discipline” and “Conrack,” based on Conroy’s memoir about teaching in a two-room schoolhouse on a South Carolina island. With one of the great opening lines of literature — “My wound is geography. It is also my anchorage, my port of call.” — “Prince of Tides” also gave us a 1991 movie with seven Academy Award nominations, directed by Barbra Streisand and starring Nick Nolte. Author Pat Conroy Filmed largely in South Carolina, readers interested in retracing their favorite characters’ cinematic steps don’t have to go far with this revered Conroy book. Many scenes were shot in Beaufort, Fripp Island and Charleston, all just a day trip away. If you’re a reader waiting on 2016’s Oscar-nominated bookbased movies to come to Redbox, we hope to tide you over with this list of other popular flicks born from best-sellers. As an added bonus, we’ve focused on films and/or books set in – or at least fairly close to – the Atlanta area.

The Help

Cold Sassy Tree

Wise Blood

A Walk in the Woods

Fried Green Tomatoes

The Color Purple

By Kathryn Stockett While the book and movie are set in Jackson, Mississippi, the author currently calls the Atlanta area home and occasionally speaks to groups here. And what a story Stockett has to tell. After being rejected by 60 agents, “The Help,” her first novel, went on to sell over 10 million copies and spend 100-plus weeks on the New York Times Best Seller list. In addition, the 2011 film adaptation garnered four Academy Award nominations.

By Flannery O’Connor Lovers of literature have access to a nearby jewel that, for any O’Connor fan, must be visited. Watch John Huston’s take on “Wise Blood,” or just curl up with O’Connor’s “The Complete Stories,” winner of the National Book Award. Then visit Andalusia two hours away in Milledgeville. O’Connor’s final home – where she wrote many of her short stories and other works, and where she lived with her mother from 1951 until her 1964 death – is open for self-guided “walk-in” tours Thursday through Sunday. Public access to Andalusia began in 2003.

By Fannie Flagg Though the book, “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café,” was set in Alabama, the movie was filmed in Juliette, Georgia, about 70 miles south of Atlanta. A comedydrama nominated for two Academy Awards, “Fried Green Tomatoes” is one of those laugh-out-loud, muchbeloved movies – and books – that readers will want to revisit over and over because Flagg’s funny, chatty style can’t help but put us in mind of home, wherever that may be.

By Olive Ann Burns Another must-read for area residents, “Cold Sassy Tree” is a historical novel based on a fictional place that looked a lot like Harmony Grove, Georgia. In 1904, two years before Burns’ book begins, Harmony Grove was renamed Commerce, but fans of the book and movie will only think “Cold Sassy Tree” every time they pass signs for Commerce along that Dawson County stretch of I-85. Another repeat read for book lovers in Georgia, and everywhere.

By Bill Bryson If your only introduction to this work is the 2015 film starring Robert Redford and Nolte, run — don’t walk — to get a copy of Bryson’s hilarious 1998 travelogue about his attempt to walk the Appalachian Trail with his old buddy Stephen Katz, starting at the trail’s southern terminus, Springer Mountain, Georgia. Read the book, drive to the visitor’s center at Amicalola Falls State Park and see how far you can make the 8.3-mile approach to Springer. Especially if you’re thinking about the book and chuckling every step of the way.

By Alice Walker Winner of the 1983 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, this book was set mostly in rural Georgia by a writer who was born in Putnam County in 1944, the youngest of eight children. The 1985 movie, directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Oprah Winfrey in her film debut, earned 11 Academy Award nominations. “The Color Purple” may literally be a far cry from “Gone With the Wind,” but both books and, later, films demonstrate just how rich a literary heritage we have in our own backyards. ■

And, if you’re looking for something good to read, you need only to check out any list of Oscar-nominated films. Chances are tomorrow’s classics have already been brought to life on the silver screen and, one day, may be celebrated in their very own 70th anniversary ultimate collector’s edition.

The business that Milton built Wilbur and Rudy’s is social center for community By CANDY WAYLOCK

Road, and will celebrate its first anniversary in May. It is located in the old Buice General Store, which opened in the 1930s and closed in the 1980s. Ryan Bowersox says he feels the building belongs to ontained within the comfort of Wilbur and Rudy’s the community and he is grateful to be part of its revival. Farmtable are a host of memories of a store that “This great old building is a gift to everyone. On that Ryan and Beth “bounced around” for the better part many evenings, live music and wine tastings draw crowds of six years with no particular location in mind, until a after the business hours are over. fortuitous visit to Milton presented their path. Named after the two “rambunctious” sons of owners “We were first introduced to Milton in June of 2014 Ryan and Beth Bowersox, Wilbur and Rudy’s Farmtable while traveling to sunflower fields in Alpharetta for family is located at the Birmingham Crossroads on Hickory Flat pictures,” said Ryan, a native of Wyoming who moved to Atlanta in 2001 after graduating from college in Michigan. “We passed the building that is now Wilbur and Rudy’s and fell in love with the building and the area.” He and Beth, who grew up in Snellville and worked in the mortgage business for years, had an idea of blending the craft markets they loved into a little place of their own. The former general store was the perfect setting. They signed a lease within two months, and four months later the couple opened a small Christmas store, selling trees and a few other items to “test the market” before going all in with a renovation of the entire building. In that short time, they learned the ideas the community had for a new business, and soon set to work planning for Wilbur and Rudy’s. “The ‘aha’ moment happened once we really learned what the community wanted and how we could be the vehicle for that,” said Ryan. The couple began full renovations on the building in February 2015. Three months later, on May 16, Wilbur and Rudy’s officially opened as an organic coffeehouse, café, market, gift shop and wine shop with weekly wine tastings. Ryan said the market sources from as many farmers in north Fulton, Cherokee and other nearby counties as possible, and prefers to buy within a 50-mile radius of the store when possible. The cafe does a bustling business in organic coffee drinks, pastries and light fare throughout the day.

Milton built, he said. “The business started out as a means to sell products but has morphed into something much greater,” Ryan said. “Milton is such a unique area. It feels like stepping back to Mayberry and [our] goal is just to enhance that sense of community.” The most successful part of the business is something the couple originally never planned for – the coffee shop. “But many customers came in and said what the area really needed was a coffee shop,” Ryan explained. “With some extra space to spare, we decided to open an organic coffeehouse that hand roasts daily. And, boy, are we happy with that decision.” Regular customers gather as soon as the doors open, grabbing their personalized mugs from pegs on the wall to serve themselves and take their places among a choice of cozy seating options throughout the store. While the compliments are constant, Ryan said the most meaningful are those that come from people who remember the Buice General Store and appreciate the new changes that keep the character of the building intact. “The renovation was quite extensive [but] the bones are all the same,” said Ryan. “A huge effort was done to not change the building and keep it as original as possible.” The building was brought up to current code, from handicap to safety upgrades, along with new floors, light fixtures, wiring, bathrooms, HVAC, decks and other primarily cosmetic changes that will keep it structurally

sound for another eight decades. Members of the Buice family have visited Wilbur and Rudy’s and often get emotional when the memories of the past come back. The best story, said Ryan, was when the great-granddaughter of Doyle Buice came in and related the history of the old pecan tree in front of the store. Doyle had a single pecan in his pocket, and told his young granddaughter that he wondered, if they planted that pecan in the dirt out front, would it grow. And grow it did. Customers are invited to hang their personalized coffee mugs on the wall to use on each visit. “It is now a 60-year-plus-old pecan tree that is thriving!” said Ryan. “Stories like this are priceless and that is why this old building is so important to the community. We love being a part of something this special.” Looking ahead, Ryan and Beth have a few plans under consideration, including the addition of a small restaurant for lunch and dinner service, and an expanded social calendar to bring in large-scale music events to compliment the host of smaller events. Lastly, they are in the process of cleaning up the entire 7-acre parcel for more space options for weddings, birthday parties and other large events. But, as they’ve done since the beginning, the couple will work with the community to build the perfect plan. “It was a long road with a lot of hard work along the way and worth every sacrifice,” said Ryan. “Being a part of this great community is so fulfilling ... [and we] promise to keep making it better and better.” For more information about Wilbur and Rudy’s Farmtable, and for a calendar of events for their one-year anniversary, visit www.farmtablemarket.com. ■

Wearable Spring Trends

herstyle

T

he styles for spring 2016 follow the soothing elements of the colors of the year. Light pink and blue pastels encourage softness, comfort and serenity. The styles and silhouettes this season encourage the same. Flowing silhouettes, low heels, lace and fringe encourage slow, meandering walks in the gentle spring weather. Whether you prefer solids or prints, there is something to help you celebrate the newness of the season.

Victorian influences:

Ladylike spring styles are finally here! Lace, ruffles and fluid silhouettes add grace and the juxtaposition to skinny jeans. Wear it head-to-toe or dabble in this feminine trend with a work blouse with ruffles, or a lace maxi for a wedding or beach trip.

Flat mules:

When the warm weather arrives, but you still have the desire to wear your oxfords, choose a flat mule. For instant trendiness, add them in light pink or blue to your springtime wardrobe. This shoe is not for professional wear, but is great for dressing up a casual outfit. This silhouette is best with slim ankle-length pants or ultra wide-leg pants in flowing fabrics. Great for hiding your imperfect toenail polish, but make sure your heels are not dry or cracked.

Fringe:

It’s not just for suede and it’s not going anywhere. Fringe was hot last fall and it continues to be found on everything. Skirts, shoes, handbags and jewelry incorporate this trim that creates fluid motion with just the wave of your arm. A great addition to your casual wardrobe this spring and beyond.

Oversized plaids:

To keep yourself on-trend this season, look for oversized plaids in light pastel tones. Plaids are appropriate for spring professional wear in oversized windowpane pattern in a slim ankle pant, or a buffalo check

mules scarf in pastel colors. Plaid is popular in casual wear this spring in midiskirts, button-down shirts and maxi dresses. Picnic anyone?

Marled knits:

In loose silhouettes and lighter colors for spring. What is a marled knit? According to http://www.classiceliteyarns.com, “Marled yarns are formed by twisting together plies of different colors. The result is a single strand of yarn with multiple colors winding around one another. Marled yarns can be made from any number of plies — two, three, four, etc. “The color effect in a marled yarn is determined by the kinds of colors used together. Yarns that combine colors that are close together on the color spectrum, say grayed-out blues and purples, will have a subtle, blended look, while others that use colors with strong value (light/dark) and color contrast have a vibrant, jazzy appearance.” The Spring 2016 fashion trends with flowing silhouettes and pastel colors remind us to seek a respite from demanding schedules and lifestyle. When updating your wardrobe for spring, take inspiration from the blue skies and pale, delicate spring blossoms. You’ll be the picture of serenity in any of these wearable feminine spring trends. ■

ew Body Dimensions was opened in Alpharetta in January of 2016 by owners Dreama Gibson and Harriet Arthur. Their offices are located in Salons by JC in the Alpharetta Crossing Shopping Center. The two Owners Harriet Arthur and Dreama owners have been Gibson friends for over 30 years and after years of doing volunteer work with local charities, they decided to put that energy into a new project. They heard about Lipo Laser and wanted to try it on themselves first to see if it worked. After only 4 body contouring treatments, they both lost several inches, as well as pounds. They were sold and soon after that, they opened their new salon. Lipo Laser introduces new technology into the ever-changing world of weight loss with a machine that combines LED and Invisa-red light. This technology is a completely safe, noninvasive procedure that gives fantastic results for loss of weight and inches. Lipo Laser emits low levels of laser energy, which creates a chemical signal in the fat cells, breaking down the stored triglycerides into free fatty acids and glycerol. These are then released into the cell membrane and burned as energy by the body. Following each treatment, whole body vibration therapy is used to stimulate the lymphatic system, which facilitates the further elimination of the emulsified fat from the body. As a part of their service, they consult with clients about incorporating changes to diet and lifestyle that can work together with treatments to help them achieve their weight loss goals. These are some of the many benefits associated with the procedures used:

■ Results can be seen after just one

treatment with most people

tighten skin

help lower cortisol

■ Treatments can eliminate cellulite and ■ Stretch marks can be faded ■ Treatments are painless and relaxing to ■ No downtime or side effects ■ Treatments promote the production of collagen

Invisa-red technology can target fat reduction in areas that are unresponsive to diet and exercise. By positioning the laser pads on the target area such as chin, upper arms, abdomen or thighs, fat can be broken down and removed specifically from that area. This is a big advantage over diet and exercise which, generally, can reduce overall body fat but not shape individual areas. At New Body Dimensions, they strive to create a peaceful and friendly atmosphere, while offering this exciting and innovative technique to safely and painlessly eliminate unwanted body fat. This non-invasive, cutting edge technology combined with a healthy lifestyle will truly enhance their clients’ overall appearance and well-being. DR. STEWART COLBY

By KATHLEEN STURGEON

Chestatee, Colby has overseen the care of lions, tigers and bears, not to mention a collection of other critters great and small.

Northside Man: Dr. Stewart F.M. Colby, DVM Small and Exotic Animal Veterinarian City of residence: Sandy Springs Hometown: Richmond, Virginia College: Bachelor of Arts in biology from the University of Virginia, Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia Family: 12-year-old son, father and mother in Richmond, two older sisters and, as he said, “I would include the staff that I get to work with!”

What inspired you to pursue veterinary medicine?

kathleen@appenmediagroup.com

Y

ou could call Dr. Stewart Colby the Doctor Dolittle of metro Atlanta. As the only veterinarian at his clinic, Windward Animal Hospital, Colby never has a dull day. With a background in small animal medicine and surgery with extensive experience in avian and exotic species, he treats and sees all types of creatures. From cats and dogs to porcupines and zebras, if you can name it, Colby has probably seen it in his Johns Creek office. Usually, the animals belong to clients. Occasionally, however, they’re injured or abandoned wildlife people drop off, knowing Colby and his staff will do all they can – at their own expense – to save every life possible. In addition to animals he treats in his hospital, Colby believes, in order to do good work, he must get hands-on with a variety of creatures. So he works in conjunction with the Georgia House Rabbit Society of Marietta, helping to rehabilitate abused and abandoned rabbits in need. He also lends his knowledge and expertise to the Chestatee Wildlife Preserve in Dahlonega, where exotic animals find respite and care. While at

A love of science and biology, seeing the passion and love that people have for their pets, I wanted to do my part to help with that relationship and help extend their loved ones’ lives. I truly have the best job, career and people to work with that anyone could have.

You seem to offer general veterinarian services in addition to highly specialized treatment of wildlife. Can you describe your practice?

Our practice is made up of about 40 percent dogs, 30 percent cats, 15 percent rabbits and the rest is comprised of a long list of all types of other animals from birds and reptiles, as well as exotic species. This is just one of the many facets of care and treatment provided by my clinic.

In addition to your practice, what programs and zoos in the area do you offer veterinary care?

Above and beyond the standard veterinary services provided for all kinds of domestic pets, birds, reptiles and exotic animals are treated as well. I also dedicate time to oversee the health of all of the zoo animals at North Georgia Zoo and Wildlife Wonders.

Tell me about a unique or interesting experience you have had at work?

The most recent that comes to mind is regarding the highly publicized Gwinnett

County rabbit confiscation case. I was called to aid in the joint effort with Georgia House Rabbit Society and Gwinnett Animal Control to go to the facility where the domestic rabbits’ health and conditions were in question. I performed precursory health exams on-site on some of the rabbits and assisted with the facility inspection which aided in the decision to confiscate approximately 200 rabbits. At this point Georgia House Rabbit Society took possession of over 150 of the rabbits themselves and was committed to finding them forever homes. After the story went public of the massive rabbit rescue and the excitement died down, the work still continued on. The rabbits came to Windward Animal Hospital in groups. Each rabbit was thoroughly examined, spayed or neutered. Every health issue was treated such as mites, skin infections, hock injuries, bite wounds, dental issues, abscesses and much more. When GHRS was full, Windward Animal Hospital made room for 30 of the rabbits until they could be placed in homes. The health care did not end there; many of the rabbits required extensive continuing care. I was able to save 11 rabbits from being euthanized, which took around-the-clock care and dedication from the staff members at Windward Animal Hospital.

On your website, I see you accept donations. How are you compensated for the care you give to wild animals that are dropped off?

The clinic provides a coordinated wildlife rehabilitation effort within the clinic which is all financed from the clinic’s profits and small donations from our loving patients and the community to aid the countless native wildlife critters that people bring in that were orphaned or injured. The practice is run more like a family as everyone who works and or volunteers strives for great care and great relationships. I wouldn’t have it any other way. ■

Every few months, wash the interior with a solution of two tablespoons of baking soda for every quart of warm water. Once or twice a year, wipe wooden blinds with a few drops of gentle wood cleaner on a nearly dry sponge. Aluminum blinds can be washed outdoors: Place them on an old sheet on a slanted surface, and scrub with water and a noncorrosive cleaner. Do we need to use flea prevention all year even though we do not see fleas in the winter?

Since Georgia has a mild winter and plenty of rain most years, many of the fleas don’t die. Their eggs can live through mild, cold weather resulting in an explosion of new fleas as soon as any weather conditions are right. Also, if you see fleas on your dog, you have an infestation. Most of the time you won’t see the majority of the fleas that bite your pets, but if they go outside they are exposed to fleas. So the answer is yes, use flea prevention all year in Georgia.

We found an orphaned baby (bird, rabbit, fawn, etc.). Can you take care of it?

The answer is yes, but these babies are not orphaned 99 percent of the time. The mothers do not stay with the babies on purpose and only come back to feed them, depending on species, a couple times a day. If you take the young, you are making it an orphan with your actions alone. Please leave it or return it to where you found it so the mother can care for her offspring. I know many people will be concerned and want to watch over the babies waiting for mom to return. If you can see the baby then mom can see you and will stay in hiding until you leave the area. ■ Dr. Stewart F.M. Colby, DVM Small and Exotic Animal Veterinarian at Windward Animal Hospital

Creating Your Own “Shelf Scape”

T

he decorating process of a room requires several steps. Selecting wall and trim colors along with the placement of furniture, choosing the perfect rug, embellishing the space with lamps and artwork are integral steps in creating the perfect space. One of my favorite steps in the process is decorating free standing bookcases and built-ins. I believe it makes a big difference in the space to have well-appointed bookcases, whether they flank a fireplace or adorn a side wall. Allow me to share some tips to achieve a great look. Eliminating some of the shelves particularly in built ins' will add some depth and freedom for creativity. Remember that while symmetry and balance is important spacing shelves evenly is not necessary. I often suggest painting the back walls of the bookcases with a contrasting color, or using textured wall coverings such as grass cloth, both options make a very custom

design statement. Shelves may be adjusted to accommodate the size and shape of the objects being displayed. When beginning to place accessories I always start with some artwork leaning or hung on the back walls, this adds dimension and interest by pulling the viewers eye into the “Shelf Scape”. Enjoy the process of placing your favorite treasures and collectibles on the shelves. Books always need to be present in a bookcase, they can be stacked vertically and horizontally often providing a perfect elevation for an object of art. Greenery is also a nice touch, avoid using artificial ivy cascading over the shelves opt instead for very clean shaped topiaries. Small lamps are a welcomed addition, often outlets are installed in the cabinetry below the shelves and simple holes can be drilled at the back of the shelves to drop cords from view. The soft illumination will be sure to enhance and make a dramatic affect. Books shelves allow you to tell a visual

story, share memories, places visited and honor family histories, all providing great conversations and welcomed compliments from family and guests. ■ Riccardo Apreda, an accomplished, award winning Interior Designer, with Tuscany Fine Furnishings, Offering Life Style Fine Furnishings, Decorative Accessories and Design Services for Every Room in Your Home at 1570 Holcomb Bridge Rd. in Roswell, 770-993-0640 ext. 2, Showroom Hours: MonSat 10-6 p.m. Sun. 1-5 p.m. or Shop our 100 supplier collections online at “Click Brick”.
