Interior designer creates polished spaces for daily life By KATHLEEN STURGEON

L
ess than a year ago, Zaina Wuest decided to leave her international corporate job to run her own interior design business, Exquisite Living. Originally from London, Wuest has lived in Atlanta for 12 years. Her love for interior design began early in life. She showed her skills by helping her mother decorate their houses whenever the family would move, and she enjoyed sewing her own clothes, draperies and pillows for the home. 6 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
It was then she discovered she had a passion for creating beautiful spaces. “Although I had a career in corporate, my interests have always firmly been in interior design,” Wuest said. “Throughout my time in London, I explored my creative interests and pursued an active learning approach in furniture and home decor. I continued decorating homes for high profile private clients in the greater London area and around Europe, even after moving to the States 14 years ago.” While she provided interior design work for private clients in her spare time, the idea
for Exquisite Living, 6225 Atlanta Highway in Alpharetta, came more recently. In 2016, Wuest's daughter, Eden, was recovering from a life-threatening car accident. Eden was struggling to go back to college to complete her physiology degree after having to take time off for rehabilitation. It was then that Wuest and her husband Chris decided to start a small business for Eden, doing something with which Wuest could help. Naturally, they knew it had to be furniture and home decor. Exquisite Living opened in April 2016, and Wuest worked with Eden on weekends to
women in business build and grow the retail space. By December 2017, Wuest had decided to leave her corporate job to focus on running and expanding the store. The space has since grown from 3,200 square feet to 8,200 square feet, and they are currently planning to add another location at Alpharetta City Center this summer. “I am especially interested in the materials, processes and craftsmanship behind the products,” Wuest said. “I find interior designing the perfect way to curate these varied interests and bring together my skills and expertise. My extensive travel around the world, where I always took special time to visit local galleries, show homes and meet with designers to learn and appreciate different perspectives of designing that tie local culture and trends, inspires my work every day.” Wuest still travels to Europe at least four times a year to collaborate with designers, and she makes a special effort to ensure her designs are constantly evolving, with an eye on tomorrow’s trends, whilst remaining artistically flexible to clients’ needs. Trends from last year included botanical prints and any metallic products they could get their hands on, she said.
For 2018, Wuest’s top predictions for home decor trends include: Rich pigments: Gray may still be the neutral of choice for many interiors, but color is set to be bolder this year. We’re feeling braver with color choices, she said, on both walls and furniture pieces, as sofa color choices of late have demonstrated. Moody interiors are more popular than ever, too, with brooding violet, navy and striking emerald green all key colors for 2018. Glam dark woods: Furniture is set to head to the dark side this year, stepping away from pale, bleached woods that were hugely popular thanks to the Scandinavian trend of recent years. In 2018, darker wood tones signify a resurgence in retro glamour and provide a new take on modern luxe. While this dark trend has been bubbling on the back burner for some time, it’s ready to take over completely this year, she said. Metallic handles and legs are the perfect finishing touches to add an extra glam feel. And a fusion of walnut, gold, brass, black and marble “gives a more sophisticated feel to many high-street pieces,” Wuest said. “I believe in the power of beautiful interiors to transform daily life and creating polished spaces that are functional, friendly and beautiful,” Wuest said. “My team and I create a seamless journey from concept through to completion, always aiming to

ekette Ford, a resident of Crooked Creek neighborhood in Milton and a mother of four, has found what energizes her. Her journey started as a certified aerobics instructor after high school. She taught step aerobics, kickboxing and yoga. Then she discovered Zumba, a high-energy dance/cardio workout, and her life has never been the same. “I grew up dancing,” Ford said. “I am trained in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, lyrical and modern dance. Zumba was right up my alley. It is burning calories with friends and listening to music. I get a workout without feeling like I’m working out. “I became a certified Zumba instructor in 2010,” she said. “I was attracted to Zumba because the teachers are happy, fun, positive people.” During her training, Ford learned Latin dance styles like merengue, salsa and reggaeton. Ford, a Utah native, moved to Georgia nearly two years ago. “After I got my kids settled in our new surroundings,

I attended the national Zumba convention in Florida,” she said. “I have attended five times over the years. Instructors come from all over the world. We take classes to get ideas, rejuvenate ourselves and bring new inspiration to our Zumba classes MEKETTE FORD at home.” In her home state, Ford had a huge following of class attendees, and she missed the camaraderie and energy she felt there. “Being a Zumba instructor was my identity,” she said. “I knew I needed to do this in Georgia.” She submitted her resume to a few places, and Lifetime Fitness in Alpharetta found a gem in Ford as a high energy Zumba instructor. Now, she teaches two to three times a week, creating what she calls a fun party atmosphere with high energy. The class consists mostly of women with a few men who either come with their wives or are looking to change up their workout routine. “We call it our happy hour,” she said. “Join the party and get your dose of happy!” In the Zumba world, Ford became friends with other instructors and began hanging out with them outside of class. That really helped her become acclimated to her new home in the South. “It got me more involved in the community.” To keep workout routines fresh, certified Zumba

instructors receive new music and choreography DVDs each month. The music comes already spliced with clean lyrics. “Sometimes, I make up my own routines while driving in my car. I call it car-ography. I am sure that other drivers who see me bobbing and ducking my head to the music think there must be something wrong with that girl,” laughed Ford. Mekette Ford’s message to NSW readers: “Come try Zumba! It is easy to follow. You don’t have to be a dancer. It’s about the music. Zumba boosts endorphins. It brightens my day. If you come to my class, I will definitely brighten your day.” ■

Becoming Stylishly Organized with Neat Method

home’s style is often defined by the things you can’t see — like an absence of clutter. While clean, organized living spaces top many homeowners’ lists, they’re not always easy to achieve. Last year, two expert organizers opened Neat Method Atlanta to bring fashionable organization to Atlanta’s Northside. Northside Woman recently reached out to Neat Method Atlanta owners Sarah Edelman of Alpharetta and Devon Green of Buckhead, who shared their insights on organizing homes in smart, yet simple ways.
What is Neat Method?
Edelman: Neat Method is a luxury home organizing and unpacking service. We are more than professional organizing; we offer a lifestyle service that produces well-arranged, comfortable living environments. It’s best known for designing customized solutions to create a new level of comfort and style in the home. Green: Expect an honest approach, a sharp eye for detail and a personal sense of refined style. We believe that once your life is clutter free and well arranged, you will have a new appreciation for the importance of living “neat.”
Sarah Edelman (left) and Devon Green (right), owners of Neat Method in North Atlanta.
Tell us about yourself
Edelman: I am a special education teacher turned home organizer/entrepreneur with two little girls at home who are learning to live the “neat life.” I have lived in Alpharetta, Georgia for over 20 years. I am obsessed with HGTV and all things involving home projects. I try to find humor in everything and love a good dad joke. I am formerly a teacher, but still love a good checklist for my day. Green: I grew up in Ontario, Canada and went to school at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. I made my way to Atlanta in 2009 and have loved every minute of living here. I have lived in Buckhead (Peachtree Park and Peachtree Hills), Westside and currently Chastain, and honestly couldn’t pick my favorite because they all have so much to offer. Some random facts about me are that I love all things pink, (especially pink peonies), and a trip to Greece is next on my [dream] travel bucket list; but I do dread the challenge of packing. (I’m a consummate over-packer.) I have a shoe collection that I built a closet around, and therefore was queened “Master of Closets!”
What is your favorite organizational product?
favorite clutches. It gives that boutique feel to shopping in your closet. Another versatile product is the Linus Lazy Susan. It can be used for storing cooking oils in pantries, baking supplies, hair care products or arts and crafts. It is one of those products that can be used in every area of the home. Green: For pantries, we are huge fans of baskets. This allows for categories to be created and allows the client to not only be able to find what they are looking for, but also know when they have run out of or, in many cases, have way too much of an item.
As a professional organizer, what room in the home is your specialty?
Edelman: We love to do every room in the household, but I would say my favorite is the linen closet. There is something about freshly folded white towels that makes my heart happy.

▼ NEAT, Continued from Page 13 Green: I’m a huge fan of tackling closets (especially the master). This is a space that often creates a lot anxiety for many people, and honestly, that’s the last thing anyone needs when they are rushing around trying to get ready in the morning. Giving our clients a calming, functional and enjoyable space, and seeing how happy and relieved they are when they see it, is the reason I love this job.
When it comes to pantries, we typically ask our clients if they are comfortable with us disposing of expired items. Ninety-nine percent of the time they are blown away by the amount of food items that have passed their expiration date. (Seriously, we are all guilty of this…even us.) We will keep a list of all the expired items that we dispose of, enabling the client to replace and restock their panty with those items easily. We make the process as simple and pain-free as possible.
Any tips to share about clothing closets?
What is ahead for Neat Method Atlanta in 2018?
Edelman: Using uniform, felt, slim-line hangers by Whitmor for all of your clothes gives your closet an immediate sense of organization. Green: We like to create categories that make sense for each individual client. For some clients, we break out by specific type (sleeveless, shortsleeved, three-quarter-sleeved, long-sleeved), but for others, we focus on use (workout clothing, business clothing, casual clothing). We create a system that makes sense for a client’s life, not just what makes sense aesthetically in the space. Our main goal is always to provide the client with a space that is more functional, beautiful, sustainable and just makes their lives easier.
Do you make your clients throw away a majority of their stuff?
Edelman: We can help clients edit their closets down to their best and favorite items. By removing the items you do not wear often, it opens up room in your closet to see all the different possibilities you have to wear. Green: We often pull out items that are “well loved” or simply need repairs or cleaning, and allow the clients to make the decision for themselves. It’s common that once we point something out to a client as well loved, they see it for what it is, not for what it was. Especially with clothing, it’s important to remember that every item serves a purpose, and often that purpose has been fulfilled. By helping clients with their donations, or directing them to the correct place to sell, we take away the stress or guilt of disposing of items that are no longer serving their purpose. 14 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
Green: Lots! We are thrilled by all the love we have been getting since our launch in August and cannot wait to continue to spread the Neat name and make Atlanta a Neat-er city. We have been working with the best clients, who continue to help promote us to their friends and families, and we are so grateful for that. We are also so excited about the partnership Neat Method recently formed with Whitmor. This partnership will allow us to bring lots of new products to our Atlanta clients this year.
Anything you would like the readers of Northside Woman magazine to know about you or your company?
Green: Neat Method is here to make their lives easier and more enjoyable. Our passion is organizing, but it’s definitely not everyone’s — and we recognize that. There is zero judgment on our side, ever. (We have seen it all.) Everyone has their own strengths, and if organizing isn’t one of them, why not let us come take the daunting task off your hands, allowing you more time to do the things you love and enjoy. What we do for you The growing demand for cosmetic surgery By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
P
lace the blame on social media pressure and reality television stars, but the fact is more of us are getting nipped and tucked in the quest for everlasting youth (or at least the youthful image) than ever before. In 2017, a record-breaking 17.5 million surgical and minimally invasive cosmetic procedures were performed in the United States – a 2 percent increase over 2016, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). Women comprised 92 percent of those seeking plastic and cosmetic surgery. To define the terms from a medical perspective, plastic surgery “fixes” and cosmetic surgery “enhances,” explained Dr. Sheldon Lincenberg, a plastic and reconstructive surgeon with Georgia Plastic Surgery. “There’s a difference,” he said. “While plastic and reconstructive surgery fixes broken bones of the face and reconstructs injuries and wounds, most cosmetic surgery is an enhancement of what is normal.” Societal pressures aside, other factors in the popularity of cosmetic procedures include the expansion of options for enhancements, the removal of the stigma of “going under the knife” and price points that are well within reach of most people. In his 25 years of practice, Lincenberg said he’s seen the world of cosmetic surgery evolve in significant ways. For one, the solutions to correcting an issue now focus on a journey of enhancement, rather than a one-time procedure. “In the past, the recommendation given to a patient was often based on the complaint,” said Lincenberg, who has offices in Cumming and Sandy Springs. “So a request for a younger face was answered by a standard facelift. Today, the same patient [receives] an individualized approach for her face, based on its pattern of aging.” He acknowledged social media has had a huge influence on how people view themselves, and the expectations they 16 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
have for plastic surgery. Dr. Burke Robinson, of Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery in Alpharetta, said he’s seen the barriers fall on the view of plastic surgery in his 26-year career as a plastic surgeon. “What I have seen change over the years is that people are not as shy to share that they have had something done; whether as simple as a filler or as involved as a surgical facelift,” said Robinson. “The stigma of ‘having something done’ has dissolved over my career.”
The natural approach to plastic
An emerging trend that appeals to many is the less invasive approach to enhancements – even on traditionally surgical procedures. By far, breast augmentation remains the most-requested procedure for women who are looking to reverse the effects of gravity and motherhood. What is surprising, noted the ASPS, is the growing number of women seeking more natural approaches to breast enhancement. While surgically added implants are still the most popular option, the ASPS saw a 22 percent rise last year in fat transfer breast augmentation. This process is exactly as it sounds – fat taken from other parts of the body is injected it into the breasts. The procedure is generally best for women seeking some enlargement and who do not want implants. But this technique is not used only for breast enhancements. It has also become a viable option for the face. “We receive daily requests for fat transfer,” said Georgia Plastic Surgery’s Lincenberg. “It [is] a reliable way to rejuvenate a face in a minimally invasive manner.” He said fat transfer can plump up the gauntness that occurs as a face ages, to soften the hard bony angles that develop with age and to improve skin smoothness, texture and wrinkling. And because it uses the patient’s own fat, it is a natural graft with permanent results. The ASPS also reported a 200 percent increase in minimally invasive

TOP 5 COSMETIC SURGICAL AND MINIMALLY INVASIVE PROCEDURES
In the immortal words of Oprah Winfrey, “the sisters have gone south,” which is a prime reason one out of every five plastic surgeries are breast augmentations. Here is the list of most performed enhancement surgeries in 2017. Cosmetic surgical procedures: • Breast augmentation • Liposuction • Nose reshaping • Eyelid surgery • Tummy tuck Cosmetic minimally invasive procedures: • Botox • Soft tissue fillers • Chemical peel • Laser hair removal • Microdermabrasion
cosmetic procedures over the last decade, primarily in body sculpting and fat removal procedures. Doctors are now using ultrasound, radio frequency, infrared light, vacuum massage, “freezing” and injectable medication to reduce fat cells and change the look of their patients’ bodies. “Unwanted fat is something that affects so many Americans,” said Dr. Jeffrey E. Janis, president of ASPS. “Plastic surgeons are able to give patients more options than ever before for fat elimination or redistribution, [and it] can act as maintenance steps while they consider something more extensive down the line.”
Cosmetic procedures through the decades
No matter her age, cosmetic surgery can help a woman with both her outward appearance as well as her own self-image. “The main reason for seeking cosmetic surgery is to improve one’s self-satisfaction of their appearance,” said Lincenberg. “Exercise and diet can only do so much. We all seek to be satisfied in many aspects of life… appearance is no exception.” But doctors caution that plastic surgery is not the answer to every issue, and patients must have realistic expectations of the limits of surgery. “Of course plastic surgery is not the solution to every problem,” said Robinson. “[But] the vast majority of patients that I see are very level-headed about their desires, and what it will do for them.”
Although there are some guidelines about age and appropriate procedures, these are the most commonly requested procedures for women at various ages: • 20s – nose job, breast augmentation, liposuction, breast reduction • 30s – breast augmentation, “mommy makeover,” tummy tuck, Botox • 40s – Mommy makeover, liposuction, Botox, lasers, facelift, skin care regimens, fillers • 50s – liposuction, facelifts, breast lifts, eye and brow lifts, skin care, Botox, fillers, lasers, breast reduction • 60s and beyond – face, eye and brow lifts, tummy tucks, breast reduction Of course, all surgery poses risks, said Lincenberg, and that risk often increases as we age. “If the chance of a complication is too high, cosmetic surgery should not be a consideration,” he said. “Compromised health…and the added risks must be weighed by the patient and surgeon. On the other hand, advanced age complimented by good health should not prevent a motivated patient from seeking cosmetic surgery.” Robinson echoes the assessment that age alone should not be the determining factor on cosmetic surgery. “After 26 years, I have learned there is never ‘too young’ or ‘too old’,” said Robinson, who noted he has performed facelifts on patients in their 80s and eyelid surgery on patients in their 20s. “These are the extreme, however every patient ages in their own individual, genetically inherited way,” he said. “This is why it is so important to have an individualized consultation.” He added that cosmetic surgery is not “cookie cutter” based on one’s age, so only your doctor can determine what procedures have the best available outcome. Robinson said most surgeons follow the standard that patients be at least 18 years old – the legal age of consent – for cosmetic surgeries, especially liposuction and breast augmentation. ■
THE COST OF BEAUTY So does looking like a reality TV star require the bank account of one as well? Not necessarily, said Robinson Facial Plastic Surgery’s Robinson, who said cosmetic surgery is within reach for most people. “What once was reserved for only the rich and famous, is now fairly common place,” he said. “I have had patients of all walks of life, from bus drivers to CEOs, who have had procedures done to enhance their life.” Robinson said advances in medicine are always evolving, and there are many nonsurgical and minimally invasive procedures and injectables that are available at a lower cost – and offer less down time as well. “These [procedures] are yielding results that not long ago could only be achieved surgically,” he said. Enhancement procedures are a big business. In 2016, Americans spent $16 billion on cosmetic plastic surgery and minimally invasive procedures, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The most popular surgical procedures and their national average costs were: • Breast augmentation — $3,700 • Liposuction — $3,200 • Nose reshaping — $5,000 • Tummy tuck — $5,800 • Buttock augmentation — $4,400 For minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, the average cost (per treatment) was: • Wrinkle treatment injections (botulinum toxin type-A, or Botox) - $385 • Hyaluronic acid fillers - $644 each • Chemical peel - $673 each • Microdermabrasion - $138 • Laser treatments - $433 Factors that affect the cost of cosmetic surgery include the type of surgery, location of surgery, surgeon’s experience and insurance coverage. Those costs typically don’t include anesthesia, operating room facilities or other related expenses. april2018 | northsidewoman.com | 17

Pets and pollen Dr. JOANNE ROESNER, DVM, DABVP
Loving Hands Animal Clinic • www.lovinghands.com
S
pring is here, and along with beautiful flowers and greenery comes the pollen that gives people hay fever. Animals can also show respiratory signs of allergies and especially reddening of the eyes, but most of their allergic signs are related to skin and itching. Allergic skin disease is called atopic dermatitis, or atopy. The substances (allergens) that cause symptoms range from pollens (plants, trees, grasses) to fabrics (cotton, wool), house dust mites and molds. Initially, most pets are very seasonal (spring and fall) in their signs, but as they become allergic to more substances, they may suffer all year long. Signs often begin between one and three years of age and worsen over a lifetime. Atopy cannot be cured, but symptoms can be managed. In dogs, atopy generally causes itching of the feet, legs, armpits, ears and groin. Inflammation of the skin, decreased immune function and self-trauma often result in secondary infection, hair loss and sometimes wounds. All breeds can be affected, but there is a predisposition in retrievers, terriers, schnauzers, Dalmatians and bulldog-derived breeds (English bull, pitbull, Frenchies). Appropriate shampoos, rinses and sprays are beneficial to most dogs. Antihistamines are not as effective as they are in people, but can be tried. Allergy testing and the administration of injections to decrease the patient response to
the allergen may also be employed. Atopic dermatitis in cats is slightly different than in dogs. The head, neck and face are often the most affected sites. Excessive grooming and hair pulling, especially on the belly and back legs, are also seen in allergic cats. Fine scabbing and crusting over the body, called miliary dermatitis, can occur both with atopy and with allergy to flea saliva. Similar therapies to those in dogs can be utilized. A fresh approach to the perfect coffee table By TRACY HARKNESS Contributing Writer
A
s we transition into spring, or any new season for that matter, I am always itching to swap out the décor in my home. Think of it as a décor “refresh.” One quick and inexpensive place to start is with the coffee table. Most of my clients feel completely overwhelmed when it comes to curating accessories for their home. A coffee table is an easy and great place to add some personality. I like to start by anchoring the table with a beautiful stack of books. One thing to keep in mind is that the books and other accessories should color coordinate with your room décor. Most importantly, however, use new or vintage books and accessories that have meaning to you. Next, I like to add a tray to corral items we use daily, like candles, coasters and maybe a beautiful box to hide those remotes. Add texture by using a wicker tray, or for a more modern look, a lacquer tray will do
the trick. Both will be a chic touch. Another important element to your coffee table styling is a vase of fresh florals or greenery, or perhaps a small houseplant or bowl of succulents. The addition of something from nature is a great way to add some texture and height. Lastly, consider layering in some sculptural objects. h t r o n x e M Texr e d r o b e h t of Chuy’s Alpharetta is the latest import from Texas-based chain By CANDY WAYLOCK

F
rom its roots in Austin, Texas, going back to 1982, Chuy’s restaurants have expanded across the nation bringing its “funky Tex-Mex” approach to nearly 100 locations in 19 states. When Chuy’s Alpharetta opened in December 2017 adjacent to the Avalon complex on Old Milton Parkway, it became the third Chuy’s location in Georgia. Although the franchise has expanded far and wide, much of the original look and feel of the first Austin restaurant is carried into every new location, including in Alpharetta. Here, you will find hand-carved wooden fish "swimming" from the ceiling, hubcaps hanging above your booth and the Elvis shrine that started with founders Mike Young and John Zapp and which continues today. The decision to open a restaurant in Alpharetta was a deliberate one, said general manager Joel Docking, and was based on the strong sense of community that already existed.

themed restaurants in the North Fulton-South Forsyth area, but believes Chuy’s Alpharetta offers a unique, and truly authentic, experience. Everything starts fresh at Chuy’s Alpharetta; in fact, the small freezer on site holds only ice cream and French fries for the kids’ meals, noted Docking. “The word ‘fresh’ is trending in the restaurant industry today,” he said. “And that’s made it harder for us to really emphasize that word. However, the moment that you step in our restaurant, you’ll realize what fresh really is.” The experience includes hand-rolled tortillas made all day by the resident “tortilla expert,” green chilies from New Mexico found nowhere else in the world and the 10 signature sauces made each day, with flavors ranging from mild tomatillo to spicy Hatch green chile. Chuy’s marketing manager Courtney Jade Pelly said the menu offers all the “must haves” of Mexican cuisine, including burritos, tacos, flautas, enchiladas and fajitas, and Chuy’s prides itself on giving the customer exactly what they want. “Each entrée can be customized the way that you want it, which allows you to make it your own personal favorite,” said Pelly, who encourages new customers to ask for a sampling of all 10 signature sauces to find their favorite. Pressed to name the fan favorites, Docking pointed to the chicken tortilla soup, the Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom enchilada with freshly-roasted, hand-pulled chicken in Boom-Boom sauce and steak fajitas marinated in Shiner Bock beer. Chuy’s founders also knew a successful restaurant is built not only on what happens inside the building, but outside as well - in the community. To that end, Chuy’s supports a “local store marketing” approach from day one. “Our general managers at each location are encouraged to create partnerships and relationships in the community,” said Pelly. “We open our new locations with children’s charities, partner with local schools and truthfully just treat each guest as a VIP, [knowing] our best marketing efforts are by word of mouth.” And although Chuy’s Alpharetta has been open for only a few months, Docking said plans are already in place to become a fixture in the community. “Alpharetta continues to grow, and because of that, we will continue to grow,” said Docking. “We will be participating in many local events, so definitely keep an eye out for us.” ■
“General managers at each location ‘own’ their store and are encouraged to develop partnerships through strong connections and relationships,” said Docking. “With the way the Alpharetta community continues to grow, we knew that our values and culture would fit perfectly [here].” While the company founders had a whimsical approach to the feel of the restaurant, they were committed to serious Tex-Mex food. Although the Tex-Mex definition covers a lot of ground, Chuy’s points to a menu composed of recipes and ingredients you’ll find across New Mexico, Mexican border towns, the Rio Grande Valley, deep South Texas, Austin and beyond. “Tex-Mex is definitely a revolving door,” said Docking. “But it’s all about the types of cheese, fajitas, styles of burritos and enchiladas, which are really the main defining differences between authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex.” He knows there are a multitude of Mexican-

hen North Fulton native and graphic design student Laura Douglas submitted her portfolio to an online career site, she had no idea that simple click of the mouse could land her in the pages of the largest international trade journal for visual communications. The Centennial High School alum and recent University of Georgia graduate was among thousands of students who created a portfolio on Creative Hotlist, the communication arts career website, to help boost her brand. What she didn’t know was that every portfolio is automatically entered into Communication Arts magazine’s “Student Showcase” competition. And she became one of only a select few to have their work chosen and featured in an edition. Considered one of the most prestigious venues for graphic design, advertising, photography and illustration, Communication Arts recently featured Douglas and her work in its March/April 2018 issue. “I honestly thought it was a misunderstanding at first,” Douglas said. “It was only until a couple days passed that I approached my professor with the news, and she practically leaped with joy, confirming my suspicions that I could own this victory!” Four of Douglas’ projects were chosen for inclusion in the magazine feature. Two were personal projects, and the other two were class projects. One class project focused on rebranding NASA for the 2050 Mars initiation and launch, and the other was a poster series aimed at raising awareness about factory farming. The NASA project was her favorite, Douglas said. 22 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
Considered one of the most prestigious venues for graphic design, advertising, photography and illustration, Communication Arts recently featured Douglas and her work in its March/April 2018 issue.
“The scope of this project revolved around the idea that if NASA were to rebrand themselves, how might their visual identity and research interests evolve, especially with plans to reach Mars by 2050,” Douglas said. “With the rebranded values focused on passion, authenticity and reliability, I aimed to create a voice and visual approach for NASA that would appear friendly, trustworthy and approachable. “I had an ‘aha!’ moment when I asked myself, ‘What if I turned NASA’s brand to focus on growing nutritious food to meet future needs on Earth?’ That allowed me to start designing with intention and passion,” she said. “Plus, it allowed me to experiment with restaurant branding, textile design, product development and environmental planning – areas of design that I was interested in, yet hadn’t explored.” Douglas is a lifelong learner of the arts. For “as long as she can remember,” Douglas has always loved to paint and draw. Her interests evolved in high school, where she gravitated to graphic design to blend

both her creative interests and career goals. In her design work, Douglas doesn’t stick rigidly to one style, but instead explores every avenue she can. “I am a bold believer in color and try to be open to all styles,” Douglas said. “I believe if I work from multiple perspectives, drawing on various inspirations, I’m more apt to create something successful. At the core, my taste is rooted in simplicity, with the arching idea that good design is equal parts intuitive as it is aesthetic.” Some of her biggest sources of inspiration are her family and the natural world. She also encourages everyone, not just professionals, to pursue creative outlets. “I believe everyone has a spring of creativity within them,” Douglas said. “It’s just up to them to discover what that may look like.” Douglas currently works at a creative agency in Atlanta as a designer and illustrator. A peach of a beach
The best coastlines in Georgia...
Contributing Writer

“
W
hat’s the best beach in Georgia?” Well, that depends. What are you looking for? A great place to take the husband and kids? A spot that’s romantic, but maybe a little different? A remote stretch of sand far off the beaten track…or maybe a beach that’s much closer? The good news is that no matter why you’re bound for the beach, Georgia has the beach you’re looking for. I wish we had room to talk about them all. But rather than covering the entire beach catalog, let’s take a look at three ways to scratch your beach itch. I’m betting that one of them will be just the beach for you.
Romantic: Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island
What is it about beaches and driftwood? By itself, a beach is sand and sun and water. But throw in a little driftwood and the “romance” factor goes up. Why is driftwood romantic? I don’t know, but it is – and the best place to find it is (get ready) at Driftwood Beach on the extreme north end of Jekyll Island. Driftwood Beach is just what the name suggests. That name comes from a forest of driftwood that seems to emerge from the sand. This driftwood forest formed over the years as the north end of the island has gradually, but inexorably eroded away. (In fact, the whole island is actually creeping south as the north end erodes and the south end grows.) As the north end has receded and forest has been displaced by beach, the trees that once grew on the displaced land succumbed to the salt and became driftwood-in-place. The result? A driftwood forest. It’s enchanting and beautiful. Driftwood Beach is easy to access from the Clam Creek picnic area. You’ll also find a number of beach access points on North Beach View Drive; simply park in one of the designated parking areas and make the short walk north along the shore to the Driftwood Beach. When you visit Jekyll Island, note that you’ll need to purchase a parking pass. This pass gives you access to many of the island’s public outdoor areas. Daily, multi-day and annual passes are available. Bicycles and pedestrians can enter at no charge. In addition to Driftwood Beach, there are other beachgoing opportunities on Jekyll Island, too. But for sheer romance, Driftwood Beach simply cannot be beat. Learn more about visiting Jekyll Island at www.jekyllisland.com.
Remote: The beaches of Cumberland Island
For many beach lovers, Georgia’s ultimate beach experience is found on Cumberland Island, the state’s southernmost barrier island. Thanks to Cumberland Island National Seashore, you have the opportunity experience backcountry adventure and explore beaches that must be seen to be believed. A trip to Cumberland Island begins at the town of St. Marys, Georgia. From there, a ferry takes you to the island. Once on the island, you’ll find a variety of beach experiences waiting for you. Day visitors will want to focus on Sea Camp Beach near the south end of the island, just over a half-mile from Sea Camp Dock. It’s a perfect destination for a day trip, and you’ll have plenty of time for beachcombing before returning to the ferry for the trip back to St. Marys. Of course, you may want to reserve a spot at Sea Camp Campground and stay longer. The largest and most developed of the campgrounds on Cumberland Island, Sea Camp features restrooms, cold showers, drinkable water, fire rings with grills and picnic tables. Just note that campsites there are in high demand, and this campground is often fully booked. Make reservations early. Want a little more wilderness with your beach adventure? Check out Stafford Beach Campground about 3.5 miles from Sea Camp t

Dock. It’s smaller and more primitive than Sea Camp, though it too offers restroom facilities, cold showers and fire rings. Water is available, but must be treated. A short trail leads from this campground to the beach. For those seeking the ultimate in solitude, there are three primitive campgrounds (Hickory Hill, Yankee Paradise and Brickhill Bluff) even farther north within the island’s designated wilderness area. This is totally an on-your-own hike-in adventure – as the National Park Service website puts it, “Campers should be well prepared, have proper gear, be knowledgeable in its use and self reliant.” There are no restrooms, no showers and no campfires permitted (portable camp stoves must be used for cooking). Water comes from nearby sulphur wells and must be treated before use. It’s not for the faint of heart. But if you’re up to the challenges, the Park Service adds, you’ll find “solitude, beauty and an escape like no other.” I’ve camped at some of those sites, and it really is a unique experience that you’ll never forget. And the beaches, as you might imagine, are exquisite. If you’re camping, note that you are responsible for transporting your gear from Sea Camp Dock to your campsite – in other words, you have to carry it in. But you won’t mind the hiking. It’s a small price to pay for a beach experience like the one waiting for you on Cumberland Island. Learn more about Cumberland Island National Seashore at https:// www.nps.gov/cuis/index.htm.
Close to home: The beach at Don Carter State Park
Sometimes you get the beach urge, but don’t have the time or inclination to make a long road trip. When that’s the case, look no farther than one of Georgia’s nearby state parks. “Several of Georgia’s state parks offer lakeside beaches, which are a great way to cool off during summer without a longer trip to the coast,” said Kim Hatcher, public affairs coordinator for the Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. “Our beaches have roped-off swimming areas, so it’s easy to know where kids can swim. It’s also affordable since lake swimming is free and parking is only $5.”

Don Carter State Park beach.
One such nearby beach getaway is waiting for you at Don Carter State Park, Georgia’s newest state park and the first state park on 38,000acre Lake Lanier. Located at the far north end of the Chattahoochee arm of the lake, Don Carter is a great destination for anyone on Atlanta’s north side who loves the beach but doesn’t want to have to travel far to get there. It’s a perfect place to enjoy sun and sand without having to drive all the way to the coast. Like other state park beaches, this one features a roped-off swimming area with an adjacent bathhouse too. You’ll enjoy relaxing on the white sand and in the water (but note, there are no lifeguards, so keep a close eye on the kids). And when you are ready for a break from the sand, you can enjoy the park’s multi-use hiking and biking trail, which carries you through the neighboring hardwood forest…or bring your canoe or kayak (or rent a kayak or paddleboard seasonally) and explore one of several designated canoe routes originating at the park. Don Carter State Park is a great place for a day away, but why stop there? The park offers a number of options for overnight stays, including two-bedroom hillside cabins near the water. You’ll also find two campgrounds – one developed specifically for RVs and another more primitive camping area for tents and hammocks. What if you’ve never camped before? That’s not a problem if you take advantage of Georgia State Park’s “First Time Camper” program, designed for folks who have never camped at one of Georgia’s state parks. You’ll be able to borrow gear (including a six-person tent, four sleeping pads, a camp stove with fuel, two camp chairs, one lantern and four roasting forks) and receive great advice as you get your campsite set up and ready to go. You will need to bring your own sleeping bags or blankets and your own pillows. Regular camping rates apply, as does the $5 ParkPass for the duration of your stay. As one first-time camper said recently, “I wish I’d found how much fun this is a long time ago!” Don Carter State Park is at 5000 North Browning Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA 30506, phone 678-450-7726. Forging bonds and serving the community Young Men’s Service League growing in North Fulton By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
A
mong the many volunteers supporting area charities and community services is a committed group of mothers and sons who devote thousands of hours each year to organizations serving the North Fulton area. The mothers and sons are part of the Young Men’s Service League, which has five chapters in the North Fulton area serving a wide range of charities. The chapters are part of the national YMSL organization, which aims to improve the surrounding community while strengthening the mother-son relationship. There are six YMSL chapters in Georgia – five of which are in North Fulton — with others coming on board. Each chapter selects the organizations and charities it supports. Allison Carrow, a member of the North Fulton YMSL chapter, has been involved for four years. She has served with her three sons, who attend Cambridge High School. The idea of working on service projects with her sons was an appealing one for Carrow, who had heard of YMSL from moms involved in other chapters. “I just knew that it was about moms and sons volunteering, and that sounded fantastic,” 26 | northsidewoman.com | april2018

said Carrow. “As a mom with boys, you go to their sports events, but you don’t have as many opportunities for time together, like moms with daughters sometimes have. This is such a great way to be together, and serving the community.” YMSL got its start in Plano, Texas, in 2001, when two sisters-in-law, Pam and Julie Rosener, recognized the lack of opportunities that pulled together mothers and sons in philanthropic service – similar to the National Charity League for moms and daughters. From that first chapter in Texas, YMSL has spread to 10 states with nearly 80 chapters serving hundreds of local and national charities. New membership is limited to around 25 mothers and their sons each year. The members must make a four-year commitment to the chapter, beginning when the son enters ninth grade. The age requirement is intentional; the Roseners recognized mothers and sons often begin to grow apart in high school, and YMSL works to strengthen those bonds through meaningful service. Carrow said mothers who are interested in joining a chapter need to start the process during their son’s eighth-grade year, as membership is set in the spring that year. All new members must be sponsored by a current member of the chapter. The Milton chapter of YMSL began in 2011, with the North Fulton chapter coming online soon after to accommodate the many moms and sons with an interest. The Alpharetta chapter was the first in Georgia, forming in 2006 with its group of 25 moms and sons. Today, the Alpharetta YMSL has nearly 250 active members and logged 7,500 hours in 2017 alone. Marsha Ziegler spent four years in the Alpharetta chapter with her son, Zack, who is now a freshman at the University of Georgia. Although she is no longer an active
member of YMSL, the lessons learned and the opportunities she had with her son were invaluable. “I enjoyed serving and being with Zack, from helping clients at the North Fulton Community Charities Santa Shop to construction projects at Habitat for Humanity,” said Ziegler. The leadership skills Zack developed in running meetings have served him well in college; he is now pursuing student leadership positions at UGA. Carrow said while the focus is on service BECOMING A MEMBER OF YMSL YMSL is a sponsorship organization, which means a prospective member must be sponsored by a current member. New member enrollment takes place in February/March of the son’s eighth-grade year; so sponsors should be secured in the fall of the son’s eighth-grade year. To find out about more about a local chapter, visit the national YMSL website at http:// www.ymslnational.org/chapters for contact information.
to the community, there are numerous other activities to help forge the bond between mom and son. She said she has attended cooking school classes and guest speaker lectures with her sons. But it is the service projects that really hit home for her sons. Carrow said they helped deliver lunches to children over the summer as part of MUST Ministries, and the appreciation of kids who might otherwise go without lunch was life-changing. “That’s what really opened up my kids’ eyes…we live in an area where they are not exposed to [these experiences],” said Carrow. “The kids would take their lunches, give my sons a huge hug, then often come back for another hug. It was so rewarding for all of us.” ■

5 Ways to Spring Clean Your Budget By ALLISON NYE Contributing Writer
S
pring is here! When I was younger, the coming of spring meant it was time for the dreaded deep clean of the house. While that’s not something I particularly enjoyed, I do enjoy helping people clean up their finances. There’s no better time than now to take a deep dive into your budget and get your spending on track. To kick-start your financial spring clean, consider these five easy ways to help you breathe easier® about your budget: 1. Call the customer retention department of your cable, internet and phone companies to request a lower rate. Why is it only new customers get introductory deals, while the loyal customers pay more out of pocket? 2. Get a list of your subscription services that auto-pay. There’s a good chance there are some you can re-evaluate. 3. Take a closer look at your expenses. Make it easier on yourself by utilizing a tool like Mint.com. At oXYGen, we have a personal financial dashboard that links all of your accounts, so you can see all of your transactions at once. This shows you concrete numbers on how much you are spending on food, gas, entertainment and other expenses per month. 4. Look at your property and casualty insurance and health insurance to see if you can afford to raise your deductibles, which should lower your premiums. 5. Implement the 50/20/30 rule. Automatically put 20 percent of your income into savings. Reserve 50 percent for your fixed expenses like utilities and cell phone and allow 30 percent for fun. You won’t feel guilty about the money you do spend if it’s budgeted. The key to budgets is to think about them as a way to help you become financially free, instead of being restrictive to your lifestyle. If you take on this mindset, it will be easier to cut out wasteful spending and save more. ■

So, you have different levels of desire…
she'ssexy
By ELAINE WILCO, MA, LPC Contributing Writer
P
robably the single biggest sexual issue for couples is that one has a stronger libido than the other. When one partner is seldom in the mood, any opportunity for sex can turn into avoidance, excuses, disappointment, tension, hurt, anger and distance. And while not all men have a strong desire for sex, it’s more frequently the woman who has the lower libido. The good news is that desire, in the sense of a physical urge, doesn’t have to be the motivating factor for having sex in a long-term relationship. Most women who say they have little or no sex drive also say that once they get into it, they do enjoy sex — at least if they can relax and take their time. Although there’s nothing wrong with the occasional “quickie,” rushing through just to get sex over with can turn into a downward spiral. If it’s over before she has a chance to get interested, a lowlibido woman is likely to have less and less interest. No one should have sex when they

really don’t want to, and there are many bad reasons for having sex: to end the arguing, to appease (rather than please) a partner, because it’s a duty and so on. On the other hand, there are also really good reasons for having sex, other than feeling a physical need: because it brings you closer together, because it feels good and because it’s fun. If sex isn’t any of these things, then that is what needs fixing, not the libido. The key to having regular physical intimacy is not how often you are in the mood, but knowing how to get in the mood. Decide that sex is good for your relationship, then make sure the sex is good! ■

Local horse lovers find literary paradise in their own back paddocks
Karen McGoldrick with her horse, Gia, at Prospect Hill Farm in Milton.
By KATHY DES JARDINS CIOFFI Contributing Writer
H
orse lovers around North Fulton need not look far for literary equine entertainment. Milton’s Karen McGoldrick, who rides, teaches and trains dressage at her own Prospect Hill Farm, is the author of “The Dressage Chronicles,” a five-book series with an international following. The last of the collection, “Lessons with Margot,” published in February, is the nonfiction finale to a quartet of novels McGoldrick wrote with horsewomen in mind. While the western style of riding may conjure images of cowboys on the open range, the Olympic riding sports of dressage, show jumping and three-day eventing are populated almost exclusively by females. Consequently, most of McGoldrick’s fans mirror some stage of her own life: From horse-loving young girl to woman-of-a-certain-age still in the saddle. At 9, she was poring over “School for Young Riders,” by Jane Marshall Dillon, retaking quizzes at the end of each chapter till she scored 100. At 12, she was bicycling to her first job at a stable near her California home. As a young woman, she taught dressage under a trainer’s supervision. By the 1990s, she was teaching and riding on her own – “have saddle, will travel.” And in 1992, she and her husband purchased Prospect Hill Farm, where she put her English degree to use writing occasional magazine articles.
30 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
Eventually, frustrated by “inauthentic” horse tales and hoping to pen something engagingly educational like the historical novels she enjoyed, she focused on fiction. “I wanted to write about horses and my sport, dressage,” she said, “but when I got to the end of the first book, I realized I was just beginning.” Three novels later, she still wasn’t done. “I had finished my story, but I still had things I needed to say,” said McGoldrick, who finally found closure with “Lessons With Margot,” a summation “of all the best and wisest things I have learned with my many trainers and coaches the last 40 years.” Similarly, horses also never stop instructing. McGoldrick chuckled as she revealed that, just a couple of weeks earlier, she was bucked off by her “very special, very troublesome mare,” Gia. “Humility is a lesson horses constantly teach you,” she said, laughing. Bob Babcock, CEO of Deeds Publishing in Athens, has likewise learned a bit about horses, notably that works about them are very popular – in both printed and e-book versions, across the United States, in Europe and Australia, too. “Wherever women love horses,” Babcock said, “they love Karen’s books.” Next up in April, Babcock said, is an audiobook of McGoldrick’s first novel, with audio versions of her other four titles coming soon. Meanwhile, McGoldrick is crafting a different sort of novel – “Eloise Robertson: Extreme Reader,” a coming-of-age work of historical fiction with a time-travel slant. While it doesn’t sound much like “Black Beauty,” McGoldrick hopes her readers “follow me out the barn door and into another world,” where she promises plenty of familiar subjects. As she said, “For me to write a story without horses and dogs would be unthinkable.” ■

ell here we are… April ~ the month for making school choices for the upcoming year from a preschool level all the way through to the college-bound child! From a preschool standpoint, letters of acceptance have now been mailed out all over Atlanta from the area’s private schools and you now have all your “cards on the table” to make the best choice for your child. Students bound for college are also receiving their April letters of acceptance so families all over town, from preschool to college, are looking at all the available options for the 2018-2019 school year. Having helped hundreds of families during the past 22 years through the process of deciding on private school versus public school choices after leaving my preschool or my Kindergarten program, as well as having two college age sons myself agonize over their college choice, I know this is no easy task no matter the age of your child! AP, IB, SAT, JATP, CRCT, ITBS, TAG, FOCUS…is there any acronym for “how to choose” ? So take a deep breath and try to remove the stress from this decision. For the preschool age child or Kindergarten child, you need to choose a school environment that will best match your child’s current education level so their current skills can be advanced immediately. Coming from such diverse preschool backgrounds, Kindergarten is of considerable angst for a lot of parents. Kindergarten will encompass students from little to no preschool to students coming from academically advanced programs. Depending on which preschool environment your child is coming from, how can YOUR child be best served? How will YOUR child’s strengths and/or weaknesses be addressed in these very important elementary school years when developmental skills are all over the map and when brain patterns for future learning will be at their peak? For the college-bound child….oh my goodness….their selection may or may not be your selection! In state, out of state, small school, big school, party school, athletics, dorm, apartment, frats & sororities, etc. etc… my only advice… GOOD LUCK ! ■ Kay Paschal is the proud owner of Peachtree Park Prep founded in 1995. Enjoying the students' achievements & successes, past and present, is her favorite past time!

Avoiding Common Design Mistakes...
A
llow me to share some common mistakes that can be avoided or easily corrected once they occur saving you time and money. Don’t hang artwork at the wrong height. When determining the proper height consider how it is being viewed. Most pieces should be hung at eye level. A collection that is being hung together should center on the primary frame of interest allowing the others to be placed above, below and alongside. Don’t have an over abundance of throw pillows. Knowing that pillows can bring an accent of color and comfort to a chair or sofa, realize that they an also become a nuisance when one actually seats on the furniture. Too many simply create clutter without rhyme or reason. Don’t blindly follow trends. Just as one selects their wardrobe consider what works best for your individual taste and style. Todays trends may suit you which is all well and good, however consider how you may feel about your choices after having lived with them for a few years. Trends are appropriate when you can stay current with them. Don’t go over the top with decorative wall painting. A stenciled

border may indeed embellish your décor, however a gilded ceiling may be an inappropriate feature when not carefully thought out. Don’t push furniture against the walls. Create a space that welcomes and encourages conversation. A sofa that is flanking a wall across chairs that are flanked on an opposite wall with a vast space between them only creates an unwanted void. Positioning the sofa even a foot off the wall and floating the chairs can prove to make the space inviting and cohesive in design. Don’t hang on to pieces that no longer serve you. Those items that once held a purpose in your décor but no longer hold relevance to your style or design should be eliminated freeing your space of undesired clutter. Don’t ignore practical needs. Always consider how the space will be used, keeping function and design a priority before making a selection. Nothing can bring about a sense of regret more quickly than a ruined piece of furniture, rug or object of art due to children being children or pets being pets. Don’t design without plan. Perhaps I should have place this at the top of my list, if you are no completely comfortable in creating your vision consult a professional. Inspiring women in gardening you may not know (but should) By ABRA LEE
Contributing Writer
W
hy do we garden? To stay in touch with nature, enjoy great food and maybe reduce stress. But be honest, some of us just want to show up that neighbor. Take a cue from these revolutionary women and step up your game! We’ll start with the usual suspects, the British. Does your garden reveal its entire story in one glance? Then there’s work to do. Famed designer Gertrude Jekyll was a believer that a home and garden should declare unexpected views and surprises. Vita Sackville-West created a must-see garden at Sissinghurst Castle. Known for its vibrant planting schemes, her garden has attracted millions of visitors. Rosemary Verey wrote the book “Classic Garden Design,” an ode to garden history. It breaks down elements from the greatest gardens into digestible pieces that can be implemented at your home. Next, look to American Anne Spencer, the poet, civil rights activist, self-taught gardener and mainstay of the Harlem Renaissance. Her Virginia home and garden was so charming that today it’s a landmark. Where would Southeastern horticulture be without world-renowned garden writer and historian Elizabeth Lawrence? Make the short trip to Charlotte, North Carolina, and visit her garden, Wing Haven, to build up your visual vocabulary. Juliet Sargeant shattered ceilings as the first woman of color to win gold at the Chelsea Flower Show. She challenges traditional attitudes toward gardening and believes typical gardens may not be as relevant to people of multiple cultures and ethnicities. Be the garden disrupter in your own neighborhood, because who cares what anyone else thinks? Know this. Most of the iconic gardens revered in the mainstream were not created by formerly trained designers. You have the power to create this vision. Or at least, you can coach your landscaper through what you want to see. Oh, and one more thing, who’s on your list? ■ Abra Lee is a horticulturist extraordinaire and unapologetically passionate about all things gardening. Pageant perfect
Local teens advance on through Miss America competitions By CANDY WAYLOCK
candy@northsidewoman.com
F
or nearly 100 years, the Miss America Organization has crowned thousands of women in regional, state and national pageants, and is among the most recognizable household names in the country. Past winners have gone on to careers in Hollywood, news media and, increasingly, politics, drawing upon the skills they picked up over years of pageant experience. But the Miss America events are much more than beauty contests and swimsuit spectacles (with the emphasis now on physical fitness). Throughout its tenure, the MAO has become the largest provider of scholarship assistance to young women in the United States, awarding millions of dollars annually in cash awards and in-kind tuition waivers. The winner of the Miss America pageant receives $50,000 in college scholarships; state winners receive $15,000; and local winners can receive both cash scholarships, in addition to thousands of in-kind scholarships from individual colleges. Aside from the pageantry, contestants are encouraged — and judged — on their time spent in community service and their volunteer commitments. Russell Kirby is the executive director of the Miss Atlanta Scholarship Pageant, which is the preliminary pageant for the Miss Georgia/Miss Georgia's

Outstanding Teen Pageant and ultimately the Miss America Pageant. Since he first became involved in the MAO in 1999, Kirby has seen many former contestants in Georgia go on to careers as lawyers, doctors, educators, in the entertainment industry and leaders in the finance and business world. He knows the advantages competing in pageants provides to young girls and teens. “The key benefit of competing in the MAO is the scholarship money you receive,” said Kirby, who is a talented and gifted (TAG) teacher at River Trail Middle School in Johns Creek. “[Other benefits] are the friends you make and the experience you gain through interviews and [public] speaking.” In June, three young ladies from Johns Creek will be competing in the Miss Georgia's Outstanding Teen pageant, after winning local pageants and advancing to state competition. These three include: Kristin Hsu (Miss Historic Buford's Outstanding Teen), a freshman at Northview High School; Rory Pan (Miss Heart of Atlanta's Outstanding Teen), a sophomore at Northview High School; and Rebecca Zhang (Miss Troup County's Outstanding Teen), an eighth-grader at River Trail Middle School. Northside Woman spoke to each of these outstanding young ladies to learn more about their pageant experience and future goals.

su is a freshman at Northview High School, where she serves as vice president of the freshman class, represented her class on the Homecoming Court and was nominated for the Positive Athlete Georgia Scholarship. In addition to pageants, she plays both beach and court volleyball, is on the debate team and orchestra and takes a full schedule of honors and Advanced Placement courses. She is the daughter of Kanson and Sonnie Hsu. What prompted you to enter pageants? Hsu: I knew a lot of people that are part of the Miss America Organization, so I decided I wanted to give it a try. I competed in the Miss Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen pageant and was named Miss Historic Buford's Outstanding Teen this year — this is my first time competing in the Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen competition. But I love giving interviews and presenting in front of others, so this whole experience has been so much fun so far. Has competing in pageants changed you in any way? Hsu: I definitely feel more confident in achieving my goals and endeavors. I'm not afraid to speak my mind or talk in front of a large group of people, and I have gained life-lasting confidence and poise. I wake up every morning with open arms to all people, and I strive to be kind to everyone I meet. Looking ahead, what do you see in your future? Hsu:I’ve wanted to be a pediatrician since I was in third grade, so with the help of the Miss American Organization, I know I am capable to achieve all my goals if I put my mind to it. I will forever feel confident walking into challenges life throws my way, and I will put my best foot forward in achieving my ambitions. I definitely live by the motto, “Better an oops than a what if." Whenever an opportunity comes my way, I embrace it wholeheartedly and live with no regrets.

an is a sophomore at Northview High School, and serves as the sophomore class president, secretary of the Future Business Leaders of America chapter and as a member of Student Leadership Johns Creek. Outside of school, she is involved with the Atlanta Professional Dance Academy, where she participates in ballet/pointe, contemporary, Chinese folk, jazz, hip hop and other dance forms. She also volunteers at the Drake House and Erin’s Hope for Friends. She is the daughter of Li Liu and Lin Pan. In 2017, she was the second runner up in the 2017 Miss Greater Atlanta’s Outstanding Teen pageant, and was the winner of the preliminary evening gown competition and on-stage question. When did you decide to begin participating in pageants? Pan: I started taking dance lessons when I was 4, and it has been an integral part of my life since then. As a serious dancer, I am in my element on stage when I am performing. I was first exposed to pageants when an alumna from Atlanta Professional Dance Academy, Patricia Ford, began competing in pageants and ultimately was crowned Miss Georgia 2016. I developed an interest in the Miss America Organization when I realized there were talent, interview and onstage question components, along with swimsuit and evening gown competitions. I really never thought twice about pageants (the “Toddlers and Tiaras” stereotypes), but Mr. Kirby, the executive director of the Miss Atlanta Pageant and my former Georgia studies teacher, opened my eyes to this opportunity. After a year of “maybes,” the encouragement of the pageant board and with Patricia to look up to, I decided to begin this whirlwind of a journey. How has participating in pageants been a positive focus in your life? Pan: All contestants must develop a personal platform — an issue to advocate for and spread awareness. I created my platform “Disable the Label:
► See PAGEANT, Page 40 april2018 | northsidewoman.com | 39
girlpower ▼ PAGEANT, Continued from Page 39 Inclusion for All” to bring focus to the issue that people who look or act a little different from others are not at all different from us, and they are fully capable of accomplishing far-reaching tasks. Through my involvement with Miss America/ Outstanding Teen, I have established connections with several organizations who serve those with disabilities, attended fundraising events and founded my own clubs to promote this cause. If I had not decided to compete, I would have never realized the power of my own voice, influence, public speaking skills and a more open world view. I have grown in the “people” department, and I am no longer nervous to speak my mind and accept new friendships. As you look forward, how will your participation in pageants help you reach your goals? Pan: I look forward to my continued involvement in the Miss America’s Outstanding Teen organization, whether I win a state title or not. I hope to use my exposure to the political climate, as well as experience in volunteering with nonprofit organizations, to further my service to my community, hopefully as a female business leader. The scholarship money I earn from competitions will go toward my college tuition, relieving some of the financial burden. The awe-inspiring individuals I’ve met through the organization have helped build up my self-confidence to find my strong, empowered voice and make an impact in society.
If you are interested in getting involved in the Miss America Organization, visit missamerica.org, missga. org or miss Atlanta.org. Or contact Russell Kirby, executive director, at rlkteach64@ hotmail.com. To compete in the Miss division, you must be 17-25 years old, at least a senior in high school and live, work or attend school in Georgia. To compete in the Miss Outstanding Teen division, you must be 13-17 and not past your junior year in high school. You must live, work and go to school in Georgia. 40 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
Rebecca Zhang — Miss Troup County's Outstanding Teen
Z
hang is the youngest of the three local pageant winners, and is currently an eighth-grader at River Trail Middle School. She is active in dance and chorus, as well as in her church activities. She is the daughter of Bruce Zhang and Lily Pan. How did your interest in pageants begin? Zhang: Ever since I was a child, I’ve always loved beauty in various forms around me — the amazing nature, wonderful people and all kinds of delightful things created. God made me outgoing, and bestowed me with gifts of dancing and singing. I started intensive training on both, aiming at presenting different stories of beauty. Miss America and Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen actually focus on the beauty within; not just the outward appearance. Beyond the competition, the Miss America Organization gives me the opportunity to bring national attention to my personal platform, as well as the national platform. This absolutely is also my passion — to fully use my gifts to make a difference in the community and the world at large. Therefore, I long to be part of the pageant community and contribute to this critical organization. How have you changed personally since you began your involvement in pageants? Zhang: Even though I’m rather new to the pageant community, I have already learned Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen remains a role model to young and old alike. It is not only a personal achievement. But also, knowing I am serving as an ambassador for pageants, I have become more conscious of living out the beauty I believe in from inside. Therefore, I have been more motivated to dedicate myself to charitable and community service endeavors. This direction guides me to shoulder more social responsibilities to go beyond my personal fulfillment and make a positive impact on the community. Looking ahead, what do you see as your future goals? Zhang: I envision myself humbly serving in a major charity as an ambassador to educate the world for the needs of the underprivileged community groups. To that end, I have been volunteering for the last year with C5 Georgia, a nonprofit organization helping high-potential youth from at-risk environments. This has helped shape my platform, which is promoting youth leadership and helping them to pursue personal success, to prepare them for college, work and life, and to motivate them to become role models for others in their communities. To me, participation in pageants does not equate to winning a Miss Georgia’s Outstanding Teen title; rather, it helps me to achieve my dreams by giving me a voice to inspire change and by honoring my commitment to helping others. Through the pageant, I have the precious opportunity to refine my beauty inside and out, and expand my horizons. Even after the pageants end, I will continue to use my voice to inspire all those God connects me with.

Minimally invasive surgical options in gynecologic medicine
T
he field of gynecologic medicine has advanced by leaps and bounds over the last several years. Gone is the necessity for large incisions and long recoveries. According to Dr. John Reyes, Dr. Ingrid Reyes, Dr. Natu Mmbaga, Dr. Annie Kim and Dr. Stacey Pereira of Modern Ob/Gyn, minimally invasive procedures are almost always the best options for patients. Heavy bleeding and painful cycles can now be treated with same day convenient in-office procedures that require no downtime and can be done in the office. “There are so many great options for women; it’s our job to get that information to them and make them aware they don’t need large incisions, long hospital stays, or painful recovery times,” Dr. John Reyes said. “da Vinci robotic surgery is also an amazing service.” Endometriosis, pelvic pain, fibroids, cysts and other common issues are sometimes best addressed with robotic surgery. As the first surgeons to perform da Vinci gynecologic robotic surgeries at Emory Johns Creek Hospital, Dr. Ingrid and Dr. John Reyes pioneered the implementation of this fast-growing service in our community. Patients benefit from robotic surgery by having less risk for complications, short overnight hospital stays, faster recovery times, and minimal pain. Modern Ob/Gyn dedicates its gynecologic practice to minimally invasive surgeries and is an experienced leader in our community for robotic gynecologic surgery, performing these procedures at Emory Johns Creek Hospital and Northside HospitalForsyth. The physicians at Modern ObGyn enjoy providing second opinions and consultations because they believe it is vital to make patients aware of their choices. “We really value educating our patients so they understand their medical issues, why certain treatments are better than others, and what their options are for treatment,” said Dr. Ingrid. ■

Keeping your mouth healthy and how to do it By DR. DAVID REMALEY, DDS Roswell Dental Care
I
f you're prone to ditching the dentist, you're among the roughly 50% of adults in the United States who don't see a dentist yearly because of dental phobia, finances, or just plain neglect. But spend some quality time with your dentist (twice a year, the American Dental Association advises), and you'll catch problems such as decay, gum disease, trauma, or early stage cancer when they're treatable and more affordable, DR. REMALEY Young children and older adults tend to fly under the dental health radar, but they need dental maintenance just like the rest of us. Children should see a dentist by the time they are 4. Older folks have their own oral issues such as arthritis which makes brushing and flossing challenging, and as people age, the amount of saliva they produce decreases, which means more tooth decay and discomfort. Soft drink are bad for your teeth. Two ingredients -- phosphoric acid and citric acid -- give soda its "bite" but also eat away at the surface of your teeth. Although the occasional soda won't hurt, a can or more a day makes your tooth enamel softer and more susceptible to cavities. Switch to water instead, adding flavor with sliced citrus or crushed berries or mint leaves. Sugar is a major culprit in tooth decay. It fuels bacteria and acidity in your mouth, causing plaque to form and eat away at your enamel and gums. Your pearly whites are hit with up to 20 minutes of acid production for every sugar fest you indulge in, from sweetened coffee in the morning to ice cream at night. To avoid being among the 20% of people in the United States who face tooth decay every time they look in the mirror, try to cut down on sugary treats, and aim to brush and floss after every meal or snack. You've heard it before: Quit smoking. But this time, it's your dentist talking. The nicotine and tar in cigarettes not only turn your teeth an unsightly shade of yellow, they eat away at your gums. Smoking creates a ripe environment for bacteria and plaque on your teeth and along the gum line. That harms tissue, causes bone loss, and, eventually, increases your risk of tooth loss. Even worse, tobacco chemicals can lead toral cancer. You want a brush with soft bristles. Although you probably know you should brush your teeth at least twice a day, if you're like most people, you don't give much thought to how to do it. Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, pointed toward the gum line, and use gentle, short, circular motions. Brush each tooth 10 to 15 times, but don't overdo it. Overly aggressive brushing can damage teeth. Flossing fosters healthier teeth and gums. But like brushing, there's a right and wrong way to floss. Wrap about a foot of floss around your middle fingers, using your index fingers and thumbs to work the floss between the teeth. Unroll a fresh section of floss for each tooth, and keep the floss tight against the tooth to break up plaque while leaving your gums in good shape. At Roswell Dental Care, we promise personal and professional service as extraordinary as the innovative technology we use for our procedures. We will evaluate your needs and determine the best solution to satisfy you. Spring is here! Are you ready? By LILY G. HWANG, MD

atients often complain that the allergy medications that have worked for them for years are no longer providing symptom relief. Allergies can get worse over time or even develop at any point in a person’s life. A comprehensive history, along with testing, can confirm what is causing your symptoms. Many are not aware that new guidelines have established the first line treatment DR. HWANG for allergic rhinitis to be nasal steroid sprays, and not antihistamines. The appropriate treatment plan will not only improve your health, but overall quality of life. Patients with allergies have symptoms triggered by a variety of factors. One of the major culprits here in metro Atlanta is pollen, especially in the spring. Allergists need to know what pollens are in the air and how they may impact their patients in order to effectively treat them. This information, in combination with state-of-the-art testing, allows us to make the most accurate diagnosis. Identifying and controlling allergic symptoms can lead to improvement in other health conditions like asthma, sinusitis, skin conditions, headaches, and sleep disorders. Bringing Women’s Pelvic Health to the Forefront
M
ore and more we read about the struggles of prominent personalities and celebrities dealing with issues such as pelvic pain and urinary leakage. As a physician helping women deal with these common issues, I feel a sense of satisfaction in knowing that women are opening up more readily about their unique pelvic floor disorders. Just as much as diabetes and stroke detection and prevention are DR. ANSARI pertinent to us, so should women’s pelvic health as it has societal implications and impacts families every day. According to a 2014 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report, 61% of women over 65 years old not living in an institution (e.g. nursing home) suffer from urinary or bowel incontinence. Among those living in a state-regulated residential care facility, 41% of women suffer from urine and/or bowel incontinence. Last calculated, the national cost of bladder incontinence was approximately $20 billion per year, which includes purchasing of daily anti-incontinence products and laundry. Incontinence is not only a costly burden, but prevents those suffering from living life to the fullest. Simple pleasures like going out to a movie with a loved one, watching your grandchild’s extracurricular game, impromptu lunches with friends, and romantic dates become seemingly insurmountable challenges. Still other issues, like interstitial cystitis or levator spasms, may cause chronic pelvic pain and difficulties with intimacy. Unfortunately, even among physicians, the knowledge of these disorders can be limited to the point that diagnosis and treatment are further delayed. Women may have unrecognized co-existing pelvic conditions or be misdiagnosed with recurrent urinary tract infections, endometriosis, or psychologic condition. Research over time has furthered our understanding of normal female pelvic function and related disorders. Likewise, our ability to prevent, manage and even cure some pelvic floor conditions has grown immensely. However, the biggest remaining obstacle we face in addressing women’s pelvic health issues is often our inability to discuss these “taboo” issues freely. We can change this by speaking up about our pelvic issues with our mothers, daughters, sisters, friends, and partners. By encouraging dialogue, exchanging information, and enhancing our pelvic health knowledge we can breakdown the barriers that make discussion of pelvic floor disorders “taboo” and allow more women to get therapies they deserve in order to live happier and fuller lives. Strategies to keep yourself stronger as a family caregiver By HOME HELPERS OF ALPHARETTA
W
hen you’re a family caregiver, there’s a lot of responsibility on your shoulders. You could try to soldier through without considering how you’re affected, but that’s not going to get you as far as you need to go on your caregiver journey. Taking care of your health and keeping your social life are essential, and here are a few helpful strategies. Practice Self-awareness Regularly HILARY AND GREG It’s easy to just go through the motions of ELDRIDGE every day. It’s even easier when you’re too busy to eat right and to get enough sleep. Self-awareness means that you’re making a conscious effort to pay attention to what is going on with your body, your mind, and your emotions. Set aside time so you can go through a checklist with yourself and make sure that everything is still working well for you. If something isn’t working, make some changes to get things back on track. Form a Support Network for Yourself If you don’t already have a support system that you can count on, you need to formulate one. Your own support network is going to look different than anyone else’s, but it might be made up of friends, family members, neighbors, coworkers and members of support groups you attend. Having a wide range of different people to count on keeps you 46 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
from feeling as if you’re burdening one person or one group. When You Need Help, Ask for It Family caregivers are used to pitching in and helping but often don’t ask for help themselves. Chances are a few people have ended a conversation with you by saying “Let me know if there is anything I can do to help”. When you first realize that you need some assistance, start thinking about small but important ways caring friends can carry out everyday tasks. Picking up the dry cleaning, getting some milk at the grocery store, or being available for a visit can all provide some needed support. Schedule Time Off and Make it a High Priority To have the energy to continue to be an effective caregiver, you must pay attention to your own needs. Put time off on your schedule and make it a high priority item, because without it you’ll find caregiver burnout can quickly put your life out of balance. Know When It’s Time to Hire Professional Help When you realize you need more help than a kind friend can provide, it’s time to consider hiring a professional. Depending on your needs, you may only need in-home assistance a few days a week. You can ease yourself and your loved one into a schedule that works for you. Vacation and family reunions approaching; Is it time to have “The Conversation?”
M
ost families will agree, it is never easy for anyone to begin the conversation. And yet knowing those wishes will be a critical guide for you to help your loved ones through the many decisions that you may have to make. According to the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, 82% of people say it’s important to put their wishes in writing, but only 7% have actually done it. It is always too soon until it’s too late. That is why it is so important to discuss the “What Ifs.” Co-founders of NexSeason Transitions Lisa Wilson and Sherri Selman bring to their business the personal experience of handling sudden health crises in their families and navigating all the issues that entails. “We understand that discussing the future can be overwhelming,” says co-founder Sherri Selman, “which is why we designed our business to assist our clients through every aspect of the planning process.” NexSeason Transitions offers turnkey solutions, alleviating the confusion and stress family members can experience through the transition process. Their signature Concierge Level Service Coordination provides clients with all the resources they will need, together in one place. “If families can take the time this summer to have the ‘What Ifs’ conversation, the peace of mind they will feel later will be well worth it, not only for the loved one involved but for the whole family,” says co-founder Lisa Wilson. ■

HALT Stress Management I
t’s a given. We all have stress. Somedays we are pretty good at managing it. Other days we are not. Whether we damage ourselves or those around us, whether the damage is immediate or sneaky & slow, the clincher is identifying that you are stressed out before you act crazy. Here is a quick and easy acronym to help you see the yellow flag before it becomes red: HALT. Hungry. Angry. Lonely. Tired. Hungry: Oh yes, we all know this one and can spot it in friends who are normally nice but just blew their top over something small or manageable. If you are hungry, do not make important decisions or quick assessments until you’ve eaten something. Angry: Yep, let’s check that one on the list too. Did you know that when you are angry, it is biologically difficult for your brain to process rational thought? It’s as if those nerves bypass the many filters we have
and have a short cut to regretful words and actions. Lonely: This one is surprisingly common. If your life feels like a hurricane, then you are probably lonely sitting in the eye. It seems calm, but you feel empty. It’s difficult to make decisions at this point because your perspective becomes warped. Go to the park and walk around. Say hi to everyone you meet. Smile at the children. Then make your decisions. Tired: Zzzzzzz, good morning Sunshine! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Our brains needs sleep to process our thoughts and activities of the day. Without sleep, the information in your head is like a computer in need of defragment. Islands of information are just floating around with no logic to tie them all together. The next time you are stressed. Recognize HALT conditions and refrain from decisions and comments. Try it once. Then go and give yourself a reward - something you don’t normally allow yourself. Then try HALT again, and again. ■

Pregnancy and your skin By DR. BRENT TAYLOR
Premier Dermatology and MOHS Surgery of Atlanta
A
s a father of two boys with my third son due in August, I am all too familiar with some of the unwanted effects that pregnancy has on the skin. My wife says that three seems not to be her lucky number, as she is experiencing far too many of the effects listed below. And her dermatologist husband unfortunately has to frequently say, “no, this medicine is not known to be safe in pregnancy”, or “no, I really shouldn’t fix that now, but we can address it after DR. TAYLOR pregnancy.” For some reason, my reminder that she has a beautiful “glow” seems to be small consolation! But my wife isn’t alone in her pregnancy. The combination of hormones, weight gain, hemodynamic changes and the inability to use many medications can cause you to develop the following (and more): Melasma – past sunburns plus hormonal spikes often leads to the development of brown patches on the forehead, cheeks or around the lips. Nicknamed the “mask of pregnancy,” melasma is one of the most stubborn conditions that women face. Once it appears, it is often a persistent or recurrent problem, worsening in the sun or with future pregnancies or hormone exposures. Treatments include creams with combinations of hydroquinone, kojic acid, azelaic acid, retinoids and topical steroids in addition to special chemical peels and, sometimes light or laser therapies. Post-pregnancy and breast feeding, a boardcertified dermatologist can help you navigate these treatments. Varicose Veins and Spider Veins – Varicose veins occur in almost half of women during pregnancy, but surgical treatment during pregnancy is rarely advised because so much improvement typically occurs post-partum and because we generally wish to avoid exposure of fetuses to any medications including anesthetics that are not critical to the mother and fetus’s health. Compression stockings (graduated and fitted), leg elevation, walking and healthy levels of weight gain are recommended. Veins often worsen with each pregnancy. Most 50 | northsidewoman.com | april2018
women experience relief of their varicose and spider veins by roughly 4-6 months post partum. If you are still experiences varicose or spider veins after this post partum duration, then minimally invasive sclerotherapy treatments and minimally invasive laser treatments (such as Endovenous Laser Ablation or Endovenous Chemical Ablation as performed by Premier Dermatology) are very effective with little to no downtime and should be considered. Acne – hormonal and immunologic fluctuations likely are behind acne arising during many pregnancies. Many acne medicines are teratogenic (known to cause birth defects), so using medicines known to be safe is key. Caution must be taken with all products used on your skin during pregnancy, even over the counter creams and treatments, as they too can have retinoids or other components in them that have been proven to be unsafe during pregnancy. Pregnancy category B is as good as it gets for acne medicines in pregnancy. Depending on the severity of the acne, topical medicines such as azelaic acid or clindamycin or oral medicines such as cephalexin or azithromycin are most frequently used. Blue light treatments (also know as PDT or photodynamic therapy) are an effective non-medical way of avoiding fetal exposure to medicine and are available at Premier Dermatology. Very rarely, oral steroids are considered when acne is so severe that scarring is resulting, but the risk/ benefit and timing of exposure has to be carefully considered. Pigment Changes in Moles and Freckles – Moles often darken with hormone exposures, and some may increase in size, but given the dangers and frequency of melanoma a biopsy is often still considered for any new or changing mole. The “ABCDE’s” of melanoma still apply. If a mole is asymmetric, has border irregularity, color variation, diameter larger than a pencil eraser or is “evolving” or changing, then it deserves assessment by a board-certified dermatologist. Many additional conditions including rashes such as “PUPP” (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques), pemphigoid gestationis, telogen effluvium post-partum not to mention stretch marks are among the effects of pregnancy. If any of these conditions occur but particularly if a mole is becoming atypical, consider a visit Premier Dermatology and Mohs Surgery of Atlanta or to any board certified dermatologist for evaluation. ■

It’s about faces not just braces! By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan Orthodontics
O
rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young DR. JORDAN and old, some patients require early intervention to obtain the best overall result for the patient. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished at an early age. The common orthodontic problems that can be treated between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as crossbites and openbites . These conditions are considered muscular-skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth have erupted but the patient still has 12 primary teeth. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth. While some patients benefit from early intervention, the majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course, sometimes the teeth are slow to erupt and this can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration
“Doctors trust us to care for them and their families.”

and result in orthodontic burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girls’ teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age. Teenagers are in a rapid growth phase at this time. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for some patients during the teen years. Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever! Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too! The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for one week. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning. Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more efficient and more comfortable. The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light. For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure. ■

You don’t have to be a smoker or ‘chew’ tobacco to develop oral cancer. Anyone can get it. Oral cancer kills more people each year than either skin cancer (malignant melanoma) or cervical cancer. The average five-year survival rate for oral cancer is still only about DR. PATEL 50%. Oral cancer usually starts out as a red, or more often, a white patch somewhere in the mouth. 6% of these innocuous, harmless looking lesions have been found to be pre-cancerous or even cancerous. In the past, because millions of people have had innocuous looking lesions in their mouths, it has not been practical to perform a surgical biopsy on most of them. How to C.A.R.E. about being your best
A
ccording to the World Health Organization (WHO), 60 to 85 percent of the population worldwide does not engage in enough activity, making physical inactivity the fourthleading risk factor for global mortality. With many spending hours commuting and sitting at their desks and moving less, more people are putting their health at risk for weight gain, muscle loss, weak bones, poor blood circulation and inflammation that can lead to heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and increased feelings of depression. Any amount of physical activity is beneficial, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Ideally, though, adults should do at least 2.5 hours of moderate-intensity physical activity (such as walking), or 1 hour and 15 minutes of vigorous-intensity, or a combination of both, each week. Helpful Hints To help you live a healthier, happier, more active lifestyle, former Olympic runner, personal trainer, and current vice president of Worldwide Sports & Fitness at Herbalife Nutrition, Samantha Clayton, offers this reminder to C.A.R.E.: • Create specific and achievable goals and resolutions. Remember, this is a lifestyle change that can lead to sustainable, lasting results. “Crash diets” and gym overload are temporary and not sustainable long term. For example, if your goal is to start running, don’t shoot for a marathon right away. Start with short jogs and challenge yourself by signing up for a 5K, 10K and so on. The incremental successes will build your physical strength, your endurance and confidence. Remember to celebrate your achievements! • Activate your social networks to help you achieve your goals. Surrounding yourself with like-minded people can help you stay on track. At Herbalife Nutrition Clubs, for example, people come together to improve their health, fitness and well-being, all while benefiting from a supportive community that provides encouragement and guidance. • Resolve to take action by making little lifestyle changes. It takes three weeks to make a habit, so start with something you know you can achieve. Add fruits and vegetables to every meal, go for a walk, take the stairs instead of the elevator, park your car farther from the door and walk. • Eat balanced meals that include fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and proteins that will help maintain energy and curb appetite. Many people find that an easy way to jump-start their diet is to replace two meals with a meal replacement shake or bar, such as Herbalife Nutrition Formula 1, then have a calorie-controlled, healthy entrée as their third meal, with extra veggies and salad on the side. How To Get Started Weight management is a result of balanced nutrition and exercise. Free video tutorials of exercises you can do at home, in the office or on the road are available at www.Herbalife.com. There, you will find Clayton and other fitness experts demonstrating exercise routines that are from five to 15 minutes long. You will also find recipes for nutritious, balanced meals. Whether you’re new to exercise or are training for the next bodybuilding competition, the exercise video library caters to your goals and aims to help you achieve a healthier and happier life. ■
