Roswell approves first public art program Pilot project at new fire station By JONATHAN COPSEY jonathan@appenmediagroup.com ROSWELL, Ga. – Roswell is laying out up to $80,500 to pilot a public art program. At their March 30 meeting, the City Council unanimously approved spending the money to accompany the construction of the new Fire Station No. 4 in east Roswell. This will be a pilot program for further city public

art projects. The Roswell Arts Commission will administer a “call to artists” process to result in a short list of three finalists. Each finalist will receive a $1,500 stipend to create a submission for review by an artist selection panel, which will make a recommendation to the mayor and council. The cost of the artwork itself is not to be more than $76,000, or 2 percent of the fire station’s $3.8 million budget. “This is an exciting day,” said Councilmember Kent Igleheart. “This is an opportunity for us to put

our money where our mouth is and make a signature building in the fire station and set an example for what we hope others will do with public art around the city.” The call to action for artists will be placed on the city website as well as trade magazines and websites. The intent is to advertise nationally, said City Administrator Kay Love. There is no local preference. While the cost of the art will be up to $76,000, the $1,500 stipend will be set. “The stipend is a way to offset the expenses of the artist,” Love said, for uses such as travel of the artist, materials and labor.
