Something About Maddy
A purpose and a gift to give
Maddy Stanley
By KIMBERLY BROCK
M
addy Stanley has one thing to say, and she’s saying it loud and clear. “There were many things that I had to overcome and there will still be obstacles,” she said. “But my message is ‘Never give up.’” Maddy is sincere and direct, with an intensity that makes people want to listen to the young girl with the bright eyes. A senior at Milton High School, like so many others looking forward to graduation this spring, Maddy’s horizons just keep expanding. But she and her mother Karen Stanley know more than anyone the special circumstances Maddy overcomes daily and how extraordinary that makes her bright future. It’s due to a spirit of perseverance that runs deep in their family. “I look at Maddy and see how far she has come. I’m struck with such awe and admiration,” Karen said. “Maddy has a very rare disorder called schizencephaly. Parts of the brain don’t form in utero and create clefts filled with fluid. The size of the clefts usually determine the prognosis, although not in Maddy’s case. “The cause of the disorder is unknown,” Karen said. “Genetic research is being conducted by Harvard Medical School. The condition remains static, but treatment such as physical therapy and occupational therapy can improve the quality of life. Schizencephaly presents itself in Maddy like cerebral palsy.” She explains the details of Maddy’s disability in a way that makes it clear she’s told the story a thousand times over. It’s also clear that it’s the part of Maddy’s story that she finds the least interesting. Maddy is charting her own course now and her mother is inspired, like so many others, not by where Maddy began, but by where she’s going. 6 | northsidewoman.com | may2015
I want to be a role model to others to show them that people with disabilities can make a difference.” — Maddy Stanley
Rather than letting her condition be a hindrance, Maddy has found a calling to be a voice for others who face life with a disability. Her passion is unflagging and has resulted in an impressive resume for a high school graduate. “Since ninth grade, I was a founding member of the city of Milton’s Better Together,” said Maddy. “Better Together was first organized by a grant from the Georgia Council on Developmental Disabilities to bring together people with and without disabilities in our community. Since its inception, I have been able to meet all kinds of people, participate in exciting volunteer activities and now I am the scribe for the community builder, where I take minutes at each meeting. “In addition, I have been a volunteer for the North Fulton Operation PLAY organization whose goal is to fight childhood obesity in Georgia,”

▼ SHE'RO, Continued from Page 6 she said. “I helped organize a fun run in 2013 for the group and have participated in board meetings. This past summer, I was an intern for the city of Milton and assisted the director of communications on a variety of tasks. I was recognized as an outstanding intern for my contributions.” Maddy has earned a reputation as a beacon among her neighbors. Recently, the city of Milton became the first Special Needs Certified city in the United States and she was asked to serve as the executive assistant to the president of the organization. Both Maddy and her mother are ecstatic.
“When she was first diagnosed, the doctors said she may never walk or talk,” Karen said. “From that point on, my husband and I could not accept that. We could see the sparkle in her eye and her fighting spirit. We told ourselves, no, that is not going to happen and we are going to do everything in our power to help her. We never saw the things that Maddy couldn’t do, we only saw what we hoped and imagined that she could. “Doctors, surgeries, therapies, IEPs, endless hours in waiting rooms, you name it, we did it,” she said. “She proved the doctors wrong and surprised us all. Now she is graduating high school and going to college, with academic and community scholarships. We couldn’t be more proud and we can’t wait to see what amazing things she will do with her life.”
Not to worry. Maddy has plans, beginning with attending Young Harris College in the fall. “In college I will be studying business,” Maddy said. “I am determined to continue my community service throughout college and incorporate my desire to advocate for people with special needs. I want to be a role model to others to show them that people with disabilities can make a difference.” There is something about Maddy, a dynamic zeal that moves everyone she meets to want to be a part of her contagious energy. Maddy is a force because she’s a believer. “I want people to understand that adversity can be overcome and everyone has a purpose and a gift to give,” she said. ■

Tales of a

Author Sally Kilpatrick’s fiction has a message for her kids By KIMBERLY BROCK
S
“
ometimes, I like to have a glass of wine while I peruse the next Sunday school lesson I’m going to teach,” said Marietta author Sally Kilpatrick. She might have also given a mischievous wink. That sort of duality is part of what inspired her novel, “The Happy Hour Choir.” “The main character, Beulah Land, came to me first,” Kilpatrick said. “I imagined her as the daughter of a preacher, a girl who’d been saddled with an impossible name. Then I thought about taking an old hymn I knew well, ‘Dwelling in Beulah Land,’ and flipping it on its ear by having her make it her signature song. . . in a bar.” Kilpatrick, who grew up in rural Henderson, Tennessee, graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and later, Kennesaw State University with her teaching certification and a master’s degree in professional writing. She has worn many hats along the way to a career as a published author – Sonic car hop, short order cook, retail, janitorial, telemarketer, Borders bookseller, logistics and transportation coordinator and high school Spanish teacher. “I’ve also done some tutoring, written translations and I wrote some reviews for the Advanced Placement site,” she said. But Kilpatrick will be the first to tell her readers that her biggest job has been being the mother of two. In fact, her blog and Twitter handle, Super Writer Mom, best reflect

her signature sense of humor about the role. “I came up with Super Writer Mom back in 2010, maybe even earlier. I’d been juggling being a wife and mother with teaching, being a student and writing,” she said. “Super Writer Mom was both what I wanted to be and what I felt I often fell quite short of, even with all my attempts to be super.” Kilpatrick recalls her earliest forays into writing and her own mother’s part in supporting her journey. “I seem to remember asking my mom for a recipe box so I could make my own card catalog of stories when I was in elementary school,” she said. “In junior high, some friends of mine and I were bored and started writing our own outlandish soap opera. By the time I got to high school, I was writing ‘stories.’” Striving to be super continues to be a part of Kilpatrick’s experiences. She took on volunteer positions with the Georgia Romance Writers, helping with conferences and eventually serving as vice president, and this year, president of the organization. But Kilpatrick says she’s never far from her roots. “A lot of my inspiration comes from where I grew up,” she said. “Writing about West Tennessee is a way to go home.” In good Southern form, her fiction includes the Dixie Trifecta – home, God and good food. “The recipes in the novel served as a sort of metaphor for life. Sometimes the instructions aren’t all that clear,” she laughed. “We can learn from the people who came before us, but we have to feel our way through life based on our own personal taste and instincts.” As for what this Super Writer Mom wants her kids to take away from her adventures

goodbooks “The Happy Hour Choir” By SALLY KILPATRICK From debut author Sally Kilpatrick comes a hopeful tale of love and redemption in a quiet Southern town where a lost soul finds her way with the help of an unlikely circle of friends. Life has dealt Beulah Land a tough hand to play, least of all being named after a hymn. A teenage pregnancy estranged her from her family, and a tragedy caused her to lose what little faith remained. The wayward daughter of a Baptist deacon, she spends her nights playing the piano at The Fountain, a honky-tonk located just across the road from County Line Methodist. But when she learns that a dear friend’s dying wish is for her to take over as the church’s piano player, she realizes it may be time to face the music. Beulah butts heads with Luke Daniels, the new pastor at County Line, who is determined to cling to tradition even though he needs to attract more congregants to the aging church. But the choir also isn’t enthusiastic about Beulah’s contemporary take on the old songs and refuses to perform. Undaunted, Beulah assembles a ragtag group of patrons from The Fountain to form the Happy Hour Choir. And as the unexpected gig helps her let go of her painful past – and accept the love she didn’t think she deserved – she just may be able to prove to Luke that she can toe the line between sinner and saint.
▼ GOOD BOOKS, Continued from Page 10 in publishing, Kilpatrick is very clear. “I’d like my kids to follow their dreams but to be pragmatic about it,” she said. “I want both of them to see a woman who goes after what she wants. I write because I want to tell stories. “My husband and I are trying to teach the kids to put more value on experiences than things and that they should find a career doing what they love – and preferably one that makes the world a better place.” A story like “The Happy Hour Choir” might just live up to Kilpatrick’s high standards, with her most important message for her kids and readers, alike. “’The Happy Hour Choir’ was my way of saying we’re all good and bad, but if we try hard enough, the good will always win out in the end,” she said. ■

hat happens when a sweet, fresh-offthe-farm Georgia blueberry crosses paths with sophisticated, tangy Italian vinegar? Instant chemistry – and an award-winning flavor. Italian-born Adriana Coppola, who now lives in Johns Creek, was recently named winner of the 2015 Flavor of Georgia contest for her A&A Alta Cucina Italia Balsamico al Mirtillo, a blueberry balsamic vinegar reduction. The sweet and tangy concoction not only won in its category (salsas, chutneys and condiments), but went on to sweep the entire competition, being named overall winner out of more than 100 entries. The Flavor of Georgia competition, hosted annually by the University of Georgia Center for Agribusiness and Economic Development, is designed to spotlight market-ready food made in Georgia and featuring Georgia ingredients, innovative qualities, commercial appeal and originality. Coppola was surprised to walk away with top honors, aware that her small business was competing against much larger Georgia food companies. But she agrees that her creation is something special. “Our blueberry balsamic is the perfect blend of white balsamic and blueberries,” Coppola said. “I use white in order to not
Adriana Coppola
overwhelm the delicate and sweet flavor originating from the blueberries, and also the beautiful rich dark blue purple hue. The balsamic vinegar adds a nice tartness to the berries while making the flavor a little more complex. It’s an exquisite and unique flavor.” Coppola says the product is a “luscious accompaniment” to any dish, and can be used as a salad dressing, paired with cheese, served with duck, pork or lamb or drizzled over ice cream, frozen yogurt or cheesecake. Coppola created the blueberry balsamic to honor “both of her hometowns, in Italy and Georgia.” Her family is originally from the Campania region of southern Italy, specifically Sorrento and Capri, where young Adriana learned to cook by watching her mother and zia (aunt) Sonia at work in the kitchen. “Since I can remember, I always helped in the kitchen – rolling the handle of my Mom’s old-fashioned Imperia pasta maker, which she gave to me when I got married,” she said. “My favorite dishes that Mom made were cannelloni ripieni di ricotta al sugo fresco, gnocchi al burro e salvia, ravioli alla caprese, eggplant parmigiana, carciofi ripieni (stuffed artichokes), pastiera (a dessert made only in the Napoli area) and chicken alla cacciatora with polenta that my aunt Sonia made always for me. “What I miss the most about Italian cuisine is the freshness of the ingredients (we usually cooked from what was available that day at the farmers market), and also the lightness and simplicity, but at the same time flavorful dishes. Especially in the south of Italy, we cook with a lot of vegetables and do not use many creamy or heavy sauces. I also miss the grana padano, espresso taken in ceramic little cups at the coffee shop, and the cornetto (croissant), for me always stuffed with Nutella.”

When Coppola was 14, she lived with an American family in the U.S. as an exchange student, an experience her parents wished her to have in order to learn a new culture and language. America was, she says, “always present on my mind.” In later years, after a divorce, Coppola moved with her two children to Johns Creek where she had previously vacationed for several years. It was an area that was not only familiar, but which she liked very much. At first, she contented herself with keeping the flavors of Italy alive for her children, cooking favorite dishes at home such as Montanara (a fried pizza typical of Napoli). Now she shares her talents with a wider audience through her Italian gourmet foods company, named A&A Alta Cucina Italia by blending the first initial of her own name with that of her sister, Angelina, who died nine years ago. “When I knew I wanted to launch my food product line here in the U.S., I struggled so much with its presentation, how to pack it, how to wrap it, to label it, the colors, everything,” she said. “It was a nightmare since I had the products ready and people were demanding them. “So I talked a lot in my thoughts with my sister,” she said. “She was an architect with a great gift for decorating and designing, so I started to think, if I was able to talk to Angelina…what would have been her suggestions? So I started using her colors (terra colors) and tried to visualize everything as she would have done it. I decided to call my company A&A, not only so Angelina will be there always to inspire me, but also to honor her, and it’s a way to be together on earth.” A&A Alta Cucina Italia products can be found in several local stores – visit altacucinaitalia.com for a list. Or head to the Alpharetta Farmers Market on Saturday mornings to meet Coppola and sample her artisan Italian products such as infused extra-virgin olive oils, tomato sauces, pestos, balsamic jams and seasoning salts. Don’t forget to ask for a sample of her delicious blueberry balsamic, that awardwinning flavor that is a bit like Adriana Coppola herself – firmly rooted in Italian tradition while embracing the best Georgia has to offer. ■

woman's best friend
Ask the vet QUESTION:
What do I do when my dog eats something he shouldn’t?
ANSWER:
M
any dog owners have had the unfortunate experience of having their beloved pet eat something they shouldn’t. But we should not be too quick to judge our canine friends. They can hardly contain themselves, and here is why. Dogs’ dominant sense is their sense of smell. They are also very curious animals, especially as puppies. Many dogs enjoy sniffing out the entire yard, finding new burrows or sniffing out critters from their shelter. They will eat anything that smells interesting enough, so it is very important for us to be aware of what is inside our yards, such as toxic mushrooms or plants, among other things. If and when our pets ingest something that they shouldn’t, the very first step to take is to call your veterinarian. You should describe the ingested substance, be it chicken bones or chocolate, mushrooms or sticks. This will give the veterinarian the ability to determine if it necessary to see the patient immediately or if it is OK to monitor for any signs of vomiting and/or diarrhea. In most
instances, when in doubt, most veterinarians will recommend that the patient comes in for an evaluation and/or induction of emesis, which means make the patient vomit the ingested substance. Emesis is a safety precaution that will prevent the patient from digesting something that can or may be toxic. It is very important to remember that dogs are not humans, meaning that things that are not toxic to us may be toxic to them. To name a few: • Chocolates • Sweeteners (xylotol) • Avocados • Onions • Macadamia Nuts So remember, when in doubt, call your veterinarian and be sure to be as accurate as possible in describing the ingested substance and/or the active ingredient, as well as the amount that was ingested. ■

“After I retired, I knew I had to do something other than stay around the house,” said Fornek. “I was also volunteering for [other groups] but as time went on, I liked the library work more and more.” She said while the digital age has changed the way books are delivered, the need for libraries has never changed. “I think a library’s mission is to support the community and promote literacy,” said Fornek. “There are lots of ways to do this and the library provides most of it for free. Where can you go for free and get all that?” Statham agrees with that assessment, noting while much information is provided digitally these days, libraries will always have customers. “Nothing is more exciting than seeing a family with young children leave the library with an armload of books for the children,” she said. “Children are the future and the hope for our society. Without adequate libraries, we only dumb down society.” One element of the Alpharetta Library that will remain unchanged, regardless of location, is the core group of volunteers involved with FOTAL and the ongoing projects they spend thousands of hours on each year. From handing out scholarships and literacy grants, to filling the shelves with new books, and especially the monthly book sales that provide the bulk of their funding, FOTAL’s volunteers have kept the Alpharetta Library humming for decades.

s the Alpharetta Library prepares to move out of its quirky little building at the corner of Mayfield and Canton, and into its glamorous new digs downtown, longtime volunteer Linda Statham has mixed feelings. “There’s always something exciting about having a new, beautiful building, but then again, change is sometimes difficult,” said Statham, who along with husband Ben, has been a volunteer with the Friends of the Alpharetta Library (FOTAL) for 25 years. She said Alpharetta has grown exponentially over the past few decades, and its little library, which opened in 1989, has struggled to keep up. Of the 35 library locations in Fulton County, the Alpharetta Library is consistently among the top five busiest libraries. “We have enjoyed working at the current library building, but it is certainly appropriate that we need a larger, more efficient library to better serve the community,” said Statham. The new library will encompass 25,000 square feet over two stories – compared to its current 10,000 square-foot building – and is a key part of Alpharetta’s City Center project. Along with the usual library resources, the building will also feature adult and teen reading rooms, a children’s area and a 150-seat auditorium. Fellow FOTAL volunteer Gerri Fornek is less wistful about leaving the current building, laughing that everyone is “bumping into each other.” She started volunteering for FOTAL in 2002 after retiring from IBM, and is currently the president of the FOTAL board of directors.

Old Alpharetta library on Canton Street.
FOTAL began when the Alpharetta Library first opened in 1966 in a city building, but had become inactive by the late 1980s when the Stathams became involved. Linda said a high school friend of her husband's encouraged the couple to help get FOTAL going again…and so they did. “Ben and I started volunteering and soon we found others who were interested in supporting the library,” Linda recalled. “We started out with one book sale a year, then two and before long, we began the monthly first Saturday sales.” The monthly book sales support area literacy programs and have been a staple at the Alpharetta Library for 15 years. Each month, dozens of volunteers turn out rain or shine to organize and run the sales. “We are fortunate to have a strong core of very hard working volunteers [and] FOTAL has volunteered the greatest number of hours as compared to the other libraries that have a Friends group,” said Statham, noting the number of hours volunteered was nearly 4,700 hours in 2014. Statham points to the Caird family as an example of dedication to the Alpharetta Library. “Every month, the Cairds come to the library [after the book sale] to help pack up the books, move the boards, sawhorses, tents, tables and shelving back to the storage area. They have done this for over 20 years,” she said. FOTAL will continue to have the monthly book sales at the new location, but the details of when and where are still being determined. After all these years, longtime volunteers like the Stathams and Fornek sometimes reflect on what compels them to spend so much of their time and energy with FOTAL. “I guess it’s the idea that an organization can have an impact on people’s lives,” explained Fornek. “Volunteer organizations do a lot of things for people who belong to them. And it’s fun…on top of all the hard work…it’s always fun.” For information on how to become a part of FOTAL, visit the website at www. Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on the staples and fads.
Accenting Life Style Essentials
I
’m always looking for a beautiful, fresh design for threads that can be easily woven into any home’s decor. I’m finding people of all design styles wanting to add elements of luxury and sophistication to their spaces this year. Having a more luxurious home can be as bold as your finishes or as easy as your finishing touches. Silver and chrome finishes have been popular ways to transform spaces to more transitional or contemporary designs and black or oil rubbed bronze have been popular ways to freshen up more traditional décor. This year rustic, classic, transitional and traditional décor alike are incorporating gold elements with a matte finish, a more subdued sheen and copper for a classic but fresh finish. I love the look on faucets and fixtures, lighting, accent tables and mirrors. One of my favorite ways to get a more luxurious living space is to make a
statement with major pieces like a velvet sofa or drapes and in other rooms simply add velvet or silk accent pillows and a fur throw! Mirrored pieces, fine wood finishes and fabrics with some sparkle are other elements that will definitely take your look up a notch. If you’re remodeling your bathroom tile and want to add a simple touch of luxury and a grand chandelier just won’t do, try going for a stylish freestanding tub. Classic Luxury. Happy decorating! ■

What Color is My Kitchen?
R
ecommended kitchen colors are white and gray which has been stable for a while. But if your home has more beige tones these colors may not work. Changes in your home should enhance the existing style not compete with it. Style should flow and be seamless. Cool colors like gray and white, often found in marble countertops
may not work for everyone. Bringing in a gray with an earth tone, will enhance beiges and still give an updated look. Sticking with the warm or cool trend within your home means the difference between style or just following a trend. ■

BrendaHamstead State advocate for cancer patients
By KATIE VANBRACKLE
katie@northsidewoman.com
B
renda Hamstead of Milton lost her beloved father, Gary Gomm, to vocal cord cancer in 2011 after five years of surgeries, clinical trials, radiation and chemotherapy. Throughout the ordeal, Hamstead was impressed with the level of support given to her family by the American Cancer Society (ACS). After her father’s death, she vowed to give back to the organization that had shown him such kindness. Today, Hamstead serves as Georgia’s state lead ambassador for the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN), the nation’s leading cancer advocacy organization, empowering people to fight back against cancer and holding lawmakers accountable for their words and actions.
Northside Woman: Was your father’s death from cancer your first personal experience with the disease? Hamstead: Yes. We felt very lost and alone as a family battling this disease together, but the American Cancer Society gave us support as a family and showed great kindness and dignity to my father during a difficult time. While having surgeries and treatments in Boston, my parents were able to stay at the ACS Hope Lodge free of charge. I saw firsthand the programs and benefits the ACS offers to patients and their families. My parents were driven to the hospital for appointments, there were evenings of entertainment and trips to the grocery store were organized by volunteers so that my parents could get the things they needed.
What compelled you to join ACS CAN?
My father was diagnosed in the spring of 2006 with vocal cord cancer and passed away five years later in November of 2011. At one point, without a voice and terrified at the news he was receiving, my father wrote a letter to my mother stating, “I have been fired and now have no doctor in the world to help me with my throat cancer. 22 | northsidewoman.com | may2015
Brenda Hamstead Brenda Hamstead, right, at the Georgia State Capitol with fellow ACS CAN volunteer Kim Westwood.
I’m on my own. I’m not a patient. I’m a subject.” No one needs to feel alone or forgotten as they battle any chronic illness. In February of 2012, I became the ACS ambassador team lead for Georgia Congressional District 6, working with Rep. Tom Price as well as other local legislators. My first meeting with Rep. Price was on a Federal Quality of Life Initiative – providing a team of specialists from diagnosis and throughout the patient’s journey to provide coordinated support and to relieve pain and suffering. That is when I knew for sure that this is where I needed to be. I have had the opportunity to be my father’s voice on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., and under the Gold Dome in Atlanta.
How does ACS CAN advocate for cancer patients in Georgia?
Our leaders work to make a difference in their local communities through supporting ACS events such as Relay for Life and Strides, serving at the Hope Lodge, assisting with Lobby Day at the Capitol and speaking with legislators concerning important federal funding for research as well as other state and federal initiatives which ACS CAN supports.
Tell us about the JAMS Relay for Life being held in
Alpharetta this month.
Relay for Life is about building community and support and hope for survivors, their families and friends. JAMS Relay allows four cities (Johns Creek, Alpharetta, Milton and Sandy Springs) to join forces to increase our impact in remembering those lost, celebrating survivors and raising money to beat cancer. This year, North Fulton JAMS is offering sponsored theme laps, group activities, prizes and fun all night, fueled with a midnight snack and closed with a pancake breakfast. The event will be held from 6 p.m. on May 1 through 6 a.m. on May 2 at Milton Center Stadium in Alpharetta.
comfort, some with tears streaming down their cheeks and others stopping to read the bags’ tender messages of hope and love. I was so touched as I walked hand in hand with my daughter and son and remembered the life of my father, their grandfather. Gone too soon. The second thing I love about Relays is the opportunity to take my clipboard and walk to each tent, listening to stories of survivors and caregivers. It’s an experience where we all feel united with a combined passion to end the suffering of so many men, women and children through finding a cure. ■
What do you enjoy most about the Relay for Life events?
There are two things that really touch my heart when I attend the Relays. The first is the Luminaria ceremony. I will never forget the first one I attended. All evening, white paper bags decorated on behalf of someone who lost a battle with or was currently fighting cancer, had been placed around the track. When the sun went down, lights inside the bags were turned on and the track lit up with a soft glow. On the bleachers, additional lit bags spelled the word HOPE. In the silence, a single kilt-clad bagpiper began to play “Amazing Grace” and led us as we walked together, some holding hands of

is the season for graduations! Whether you are attending high school or college graduations, looking and feeling comfortable and confident in your attire will help you focus on this wonderful milestone event. Here are some of my tips for female graduation guests: ■ Smart chic is a great way to describe graduation guest attire. Lightweight structured jackets and dresses, sleek ankle pants and blouses or mid-length skirts. Classic and modest lines show respect for the occasion and keep the focus on the graduates. ▼ HER STYLE, Continued from Page 24 sunglasses are a must. ■ If you wear something sleeveless, wear sunscreen. Take a sweater if you go inside and find the airconditioning is too cold. ■ If you wear a skirt or dress, choose a modest length. You may find yourself seated in bleachers or stadium seating. You want the spectators’ eyes on the graduates, not on your thighs and beyond. To be safe, wear fitted dress pants in a nice summer weight fabric. ■ You may be walking a long distance from the parking lot to the venue, climbing bleachers or walking on turf. Make sure your shoes are comfortable AND reflect your smart chic outfit. I recommend sleek wedges in patent leather. Avoid hemp, as this is a very casual look. ■ Nighttime graduations tend to be a bit more formal. Include a fitted jacket with a skirt or consider a fit and flare dress. Pearls pair wonderfully with springtime attire. Whether you are a parent, sibling or friend of the graduate, it is important to show respect for their accomplishment by dressing appropriately. If you are the “hot” sister, do not try to outshine the graduate with your mini clubbing dress and stacked heels. You may be sitting on metal bleachers in the heat. Bare thighs and hot metal do not mix well. Oversized heels make climbing over bleachers an awkward event. Do not wear something that you would be embarrassed to have your grandmother see a picture of you wearing. Quick tips for graduates: Most schools will have a dress code to honor this wonderful event. Even though you are wearing a cap and gown over your ensemble, it is important to be appropriate. If your gown is white, avoid wearing dark colors since the color will show through. graduation gown, and so the yoke of the gown will drape across your shoulders appropriately instead of sliding backwards. I suggest wedges over stilettos as you may be walking on grass or astro-turf. It is awful to have your heels sinking in the turf. A moderate heel is best to ensure a “stumble-free” ascension to the stage to receive your diploma, and a smooth descent and walk back to your seat. Introducing Dr. Cathy!
New columnist offers women fresh perspectives on hormones, sex and wellness
D
r. Catherine Emeruwa, affectionately known as Dr. Cathy, developed a passion for medicine at an early age. As the daughter of a microbiologist and granddaughter to a Nigerian herbalist, there is absolutely no doubt that she is fulfilling her purpose of healing. With an international study in medicine, Dr. Cathy has traveled the world taking advantage of opportunities to learn and explore both the traditional and nontraditional medical practices of Eastern and Western cultures. As a board-certified family medicine physician for 25 years, she recently opened a living and wellness center in Alpharetta. Northside Woman magazine has invited Dr. Cathy to share monthly advice on sustaining healthy, balanced lives. This new column will explore many factors affecting women, including hormone imbalance, sexual health and overall health and wellness.
when hormones become imbalanced. Women usually begin to experience hormone imbalance as they enter the stages of perimenopause and menopause.
Balancing hormones
Sexual health
As women get older, we experience vast changes to our bodies beyond the more noticeable physical developments. It is important to understand what is going on inside of our bodies, and usually our hormones are a key factor. Hormones are very powerful – they affect the way we think, what we eat, they play a key role in our reproduction and essentially can have influence over every organ in our body. The body cannot function properly
Specializing in hormone therapy, Dr. Cathy encourages women to get annual physicals as they get older and have their hormones tested. She works with women to identify which hormones are imbalanced. Women may experience different symptoms without realizing they have a hormone imbalance, including anxiety, mood swings, changes in their monthly cycle, headaches and fatigue. Dr. Cathy’s goal is to get to the root cause of the imbalance whether it is a nutrient deficiency, the over or underproduction of other hormones or even a poor diet. Other factors that can cause hormones to become imbalanced include stress, not getting enough rest, medications and other health conditions. Treatment varies on an individual basis. Imbalanced hormones can greatly affect a woman’s sex drive. As women get older and graciously age into menopause, the hormones that control our reproductive organs – estrogen, testosterone and progesterone – become low, which can affect our sex drive and our relationships. Dr. Cathy is a certified sexologist skilled in sex therapy to help women understand and treat the cause of
a low sex drive or and uncomfortable sexual experience. She takes a complete analysis to understand what is potentially causing the dysfunction and offer either treatment options or suggested alternatives to reigniting the sex drive. Sometimes not all sexual dysfunction is caused by internal hormone factors. Other reasons for sexual dysfunction can include the environment, partner and even stress, preventing women from reaching their optimal sexual experience. Dr. Cathy’s Alpharetta Living and Wellness Center is located at 3580 Old Milton Parkway. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, May 14 at noon. ■
Dr. Cathy has been in practice for over 25 years all over the world. She brings to her patients a customized style of treatment using natural hormones, herbs, vitamins, and supplements to help you achieve balance in every aspect of your life.

arsen is a handsome 5-year-old German Shepherd-Bloodhound mix who somehow ended up in a kill shelter before being rescued by Angels Among Us Pet Rescue. He is now hoping to be part of a permanent home where he can be part of a family again. Carsen is not your typical German Shepherd, always on “high alert.” Instead, his foster mom says Carsen is very relaxed and low key, preferring to snuggle on your lap and hang out close to his family. He walks well on a leash, gets along with other dogs, cats and children and does not chew things other than his toys. German Shepherds are highly intelligent dogs, learn quickly, listen well and prefer stimulation as opposed to being confined to a crate or kennel. Carsen is neutered, fully vetted and has had hip scans to ensure he is in excellent shape. To make Carsen a part of your family, contact Angels Among Us Pet Rescue at www.angelsrescue.org/adopt..■

housands of visitors each year make their way to Jack Cashin’s beautiful Chukkar Farm in Cherokee County. The property, which contains over 100 acres of pastures, woods, a river crossing, polo field and 26-acre lake, is home to Sunday polo matches, James Casto’s Home by Dark concert series, weddings, fundraisers and corporate outings. This month, Cashin, a passionate supporter of the arts, will invite the public to the grand opening celebration of his farm’s newest addition, Cashin’s Sculpture Garden. Located along an existing horse-riding trail, gently meandering through a sun-dappled hardwood forest, Cashin’s Sculpture Garden offers visitors the opportunity to experience a wide

The sculpture garden is being built in three phases with a total of 54 sculpture sites and two outdoor classroom areas for demonstrations, artist talks and gatherings. The artist roster includes many well-known professional artists in Georgia and North Carolina who work with metal, stone, marble and wood. Artistic styles range from abstract to representational. During the grand opening May 9, from 1 to 4 p.m., Roswell Dance Theatre dancers will perform along the trail while classical music from Atlanta Plays it Forward will be played live in the forest. Several restaurants will provide refreshments, and performers from the Imperial Opa Circus will entertain guests. All activities are free of charge
