Yoga therapist Lisa Hughes and Project Walk Atlanta taking steps to restore broken links
By KIMBERLY BROCK

“
here are many common medical conditions where exercise, instead of restoring vitality, is actually depleting it,” said Johns Creek resident and longtime physical therapist and certified yoga therapist Lisa Hughes. It may be a surprising idea to many, but it’s one that resonated with Project Walk Atlanta, a nonprofit facility that provides one-on-one physical training for people with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury and multiple sclerosis. Recently, Hughes took her passion and began volunteering her time with the program, teaching classes as a means of not only healing the physical body, but as a way of healing emotional and energetic needs. “When I completed my yoga therapy certification last year, it was with the intention of restoring the broken link between medicine and spirituality, both in acute injury as well as with common medical conditions and

especially in disability,” Hughes explained. This is where yoga therapy is most effective in the case of severe physical trauma, when a life is changed dramatically and quite suddenly, Hughes says. “I learned about Project Walk Atlanta, which was founded in 2011 by Paul and Jeannie Pickard to help their son Chris who had suffered a spinal cord injury,” she said. “The program now serves clients from all over the world. I approached Paul last September with an idea for a class.” That single step started a journey for Hughes and her clients that has changed lives, including her own. “One student has been practicing daily since we started. His entire body has changed. Not only that, but he leads all of us in a new way to show up in the world,” she said. “He is a leader of peace in the mind, peace in the world. “Another student leads by showing others alternate ways to transfer, alternate ways of mobility. He practiced getting from the floor to his wheelchair for 18 months before having
even a hint of success with that,” Hughes said. “He is now independent with that and a leader in perseverance. “Another student leads the group in spirit and musical meditation,” she said. “She models and leads in her ability to drop right into the practice. She has been nicknamed ‘Gumby’ as she is a leader in not only flexible body, but flexible mind. “Another student leads in entertaining us with humor. Another student leads by always being willing to try something new,” Hughes said. “A newer young student is just locating her ability to lead, her ability to stand inside her own power. “I love every single one of these gifts because I never would have seen the limitless capacity of human spirit were it not for each and every one of them,” she said. “It was unimaginable to me. Really. I never knew the reach of a single selfless action.”

That same selflessness is reflected in Hughes’ dedication to creating ways for her clients to give back. “I decided to make the class donation only, meaning the students bring a canned good instead of a monetary donation,” she said. “We donate all of the canned goods biweekly to No Longer Bound, a residential treatment facility in Cumming, Georgia, for men in addiction recovery. “In this way, my yoga students see and feel their contribution to something far beyond our adaptive yoga class,” she said. “Because of their donations, these men are not only fed well, but they will return to their families having stopped the cycle of addiction. The community impact goes on infinitely. One person can make an enormous change in their community regardless of physical limitation.” When she’s not serving clients, Hughes is busy recruiting much needed volunteers. She calls them by name, openly expressing how they are beloved. “Anyone can volunteer. Class cannot continue without the amazing individuals that come to help weekly. We have PTs, trainers, yoga teachers, a surgeon, caregivers and friends of caregivers that help,” she said. “No medical degree is required. Just an open, compassionate heart and an ability to follow a lead. “There is a Gofundme page to purchase necessary props (bolsters,

community,” Hughes said. “It’s all so new and yet we are on the eve of something huge with Emory University leading the way. The surgeon that comes to help has just received a grant to begin designing a new paradigm in pain control and in death and dying that focuses on yoga and mindfulness.” Hughes reflects on the last year with a sense of wonder that is contagious. “I’ve learned from each and every client how to lead by example,” she said.

“Seeing Dr. Sajja was a very easy process, we didn’t have a long wait time. He was very pleasant, informative – precise with information and process. The appointment with the surgery scheduler was excellent and informative. I knew exactly what to expect in the surgery, which was right on time. It was relaxing – no fear or anxiety at all about the procedure or outcome. Though awake, there was no pain at all, didn’t need to take pain medication after. I feel good about the eyelid procedure – vision much improved now that the eyelid is opened up.” – Beverly

Alpharetta woman finds stress relief on roller derby track By CANDY WAYLOCK candy@northsidewoman.com

ith team names like the Toxic Shock, Sake Tuya and Denim Demons and team players named Rudy Huxtabrawl and Choke Cherry, being a roller derby girl may not be for the faint of heart. Or for someone looking for a relaxing hobby to relieve the stress of a long day. But for Laura Stalemark, the roller skating rink is exactly where she’s headed after a day of tending to clients at Tryst, her Alpharetta hair salon. “I love anything sports-related that isn’t typical,” laughed the mother of two when asked why roller derby caught her attention. She discovered the sport on a whim four years ago, and has plunged headlong into the training to reach the elite levels. Stalemark is not yet a member on one of the Atlanta Rollergirls teams —that honor is reserved for the talented few who emerge from the “minor leagues” of the sport through sheer determination and fight. But Stalemark has the prize in sight, spending up to 10 hours a week on the rink as part of the “Fresh Meat” program, where potential team members are developed and potentially drafted. “If I pass the assessments, I will be eligible for mid-season draft, which is in [June] if a team wants me,” said Stalemark, who moved to Alpharetta in 2001. “If I don’t get drafted, there is another draft in the fall.” Northside Woman spent some time with Stalemark getting to know what drives her to careen headlong down a

Rollergirl. In the Fresh Meat league, there are three levels: Blue Meat, Red Meat and Black Meat. Each requires an assessment and if you pass the Red assessment you are able to scrimmage with the real roller ladies. If you pass the Black assessment, you are eligible for the draft to one of the Atlanta Rollergirls teams. I would love to be a team member and am training hard as a Fresh Meat in the Red program.
How did your search for a new hobby end with you picking up roller derby skates?
I grew up in Western New York roller skating at our local rink, so it’s been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. But about four years ago, I wanted to do something fun on a weekend with some friends; so I started Googling things that we had never done before. Roller derby popped up during my search! I went to watch and became mesmerized with the sport. I found out they had a recreational league, and the next fall I joined. After a few years, I got involved in the “Fresh Meat” team, which is a more intensive training program that works toward becoming an official Rollergirl.
We live in the land of ALTA and USTA tennis as the dominant pastime for women. What was it about roller derby that drew you to the sport? Three years ago I became very involved in the Crossfit craze. I love lifting weights and being able to get fit while listening to loud music. I got hooked. It was the same
with roller derby. Roller derby is a full contact sport, gets my heart racing and I am committed to becoming the best I can be with this league. I want to derby for as long as my body lets me! It’s all about the team and your teammates, and everyone is willing to give tips for you to become better at the sport. They tell us “you are only as strong as the weakest player,” which encourages the more seasoned players to help the newbies.
Tell me about the transition from “rec” player to more competitive player?
In the Atlanta league there are several levels. There is the recreational league where I started and which is separated into two tracks: G league is for newer skaters, and PG/R league for retired Rollergirls and advanced rec league ladies. If you want to move onto a more serious level, like I did, you need to try out for the “Fresh Meat” program, which teaches more involved techniques to become a
It sounds like a serious time commitment. How much time do you spend on the track, and what is a typical week for you? To really perfect your skills, it requires about five to nine hours a week at the level I am at (Red Meat). My typical training week is two hours on Sunday and Monday where a team member drills with a large group working on specific skills. Tuesdays are another two-hour practice, focused on endurance training with a champion speed skating coach. Wednesdays are a two- to three-hour scrimmage with the different teams to give real derby experience and practice for the team members. We train at the headquarters in Norcross, with bouts for the official teams at the Shriner Center on Ponce de Leon. Bouts are open to the public and are family-friendly, but practices are closed so strategies are not revealed.

Woven throughout our curriculum...
While you are certainly still young, it seems roller derby is a sport of the even younger women. Do you find that to be the case?
I am 43 – but feel about 25! Age is not a factor in roller derby unless you feel old or have medical concerns. You need to be 18 to join the league, but there are a number of ladies who are in their 40s. I have the mentality where you don’t need to “act your age” when it comes to being healthy and fit. Derby has made me stronger and I have more endurance, which helps me in my everyday life. I can keep up with the younger ladies. I would love for more older women to get into the recreational league. It can help get rid of stress and make a ton of new friends. Through roller derby, I have met other moms, doctors, business owners, students and women from all walks of life who derby.
You mentioned that roller derby allows you to unload stress, but isn’t constantly being on the cusp of falling and getting hurt counter-productive to that?
So your family aND friends (and clients) are pretty impressed with your very unconventional choice of pastimes?
The reaction from my friends, family and clients has been outstanding. They are interested in what new things I have been learning, watching me progress, becoming more fit, being happier and healthier. My kids think I am “cool,” which unfortunately doesn’t help them remember doing their chores. My husband thinks I am “bad-ass,” which I feel is a real compliment. ■
Can you give me a brief overview of the rules of roller derby? A match is played by two teams of five members roller skating in the same direction around a track. Game play consists of a series of short matchups (“jams”) in which both teams designate a scoring player (the “jammer”) who scores points by lapping members of

I have learned through this process that I am stronger than I thought. Sometimes when you are in the role of being a mother, wife or business person, you feel you need to fit into the mold of those roles. As I tell my story to others about derby, some say, “I wish I could do something like that.” I tell them, “Then just do it!” My husband and kids think it’s great that I am involved with the sport. If Mommy is less stressed, then everyone is happy.

We wear protective gear – a mouth guard, wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads and a helmet are required – and we learn the correct way to fall so we minimize the injury factor. And the adrenaline that skating gives me helps reduce stress. Although you try to “block” and “hit,” many times you are being “blocked” and “hit” yourself. But the rush of taking a hit and not falling is awesome. While bruises are common, they are outweighed by the serious awesomeness of the game and the constant teamwork involved.

Bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe’s heart for nature and love of story
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR MARY ALICE MONROE
Natural born storyteller
goodbooks
By KIMBERLY BROCK
I
t’s no surprise to the many devoted fans of Mary Alice Monroe’s novels that her latest trilogy brings to light the plight of a beloved species. She’s known for her ability to expertly intertwine the human stories in her work, revealing connections and familiarities between the characters and the natural world in ways that almost seem magical. This summer, the highly anticipated final novel in her Lowcountry Summer Trilogy, “The Summer’s End,” hits shelves and hearts, with a call to arms on behalf of the bottlenose dolphin. “It’s written to be a standalone novel,” Monroe explained. “Anyone who picks it up will fully enjoy the characters and follow all the storylines, whether they’ve read the previous novels.” Every novel Monroe has published in the last decade has been rooted in the natural world of her surroundings in Charleston, South Carolina. The latest trilogy focuses on three estranged half-sisters (Harper, Carson and Eudora) spending a final summer at their grandmother’s seaside home. A wild dolphin they name Delphine serves as the trilogy’s keystone, and all of their lives are changed by this creature. “My greatest hope is that readers become involved with my characters and enjoy a great story,” she said. “Then, when they close the book, realize that they’ve learned a lot about this important sentinel species.” Characteristic of her creative process, Monroe worked with researchers through the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association (NOAA) in Charleston and volunteered at the Dolphin Research Center in Grassy Key, Florida. There, she participated in the study on a floating “doctor’s clinic” that ran a battery of medical tests on dolphins. “I wanted to write a novel about the dolphin because we connect with that knowing, beguiling smile,” she said. “Dolphins are an exceptional

and beloved species that excel in communication; have strong family and community bonds; and live in the present. “But the impetus for me I think to write this series now is the hard fact that 48 to 52 percent of the wild dolphins in South Carolina and Florida are sick,” Monroe said. “Coupled with the morbillivirus striking along the coast, it’s an alarming situation.” The morbillivirus that killed a record number of dolphins along the mid-Atlantic coast last summer is spreading southward as dolphins migrate down the coast. This measles-like virus killed 753 dolphins in 2013 from New York to South Carolina. More than 10,000 dolphins are thought to roam the Southeast, and the numbers in South Carolina and Georgia are estimated between 6,000 and 7,000. This year, the migrating dolphins could carry the infection as far south as Florida. “Through my research, I learned there are three major issues facing dolphins that needed attention: feeding of wild dolphins, water quality and injuries,” she said. “I had to create a strong trilogy to carry through all the themes.” Perhaps one of the characteristics fans admire most about the author is her sincerity. Monroe’s words ring true and hit the mark best, because

Serving up Southern classics with Little Big Town’s Kimberly Schlapman
Cooking with daughter Daisy Schlapman.

katievanbrackle@northsidewoman.com
K
imberly Schlapman is a founding member of the Grammy Awardwinning country music band Little Big Town, a group known for beautiful fourpart harmonies and chart-topping hits like “Pontoon” and “Day Drinkin’.” The petite blonde with wild curls, tall stilettos and a high-pitched Southern drawl is perfectly at ease on a performance stage, but her favorite entertaining is done behind the scenes, with family and friends in the warmth of her Nashville kitchen. Schlapman grew up in the North Georgia town of Cornelia, “sitting counterside” as her mother and grandmothers served up Southern comfort food and life lessons. “Aside from learning to cook, I learned how important it is to share time in the kitchen with people you love, to nourish your family and to foster friendships,” she said. “Our families’ kitchens were where I found my passion and my voice. I’ve been cooking since I could stir a pot. It’s therapeutic for me. It fills up my heart.” As the host of “Kimberly’s Southern Kitchen,” a popular television cooking show, Kimberly regularly shares recipes with her fans, but recently, she offered a closer glimpse into her heart with the publication of her first cookbook, “Oh, Gussie! Cooking and Visiting in Kimberly’s Southern Kitchen.” “I wanted it to be a bit of memoir, to tell stories of growing up in the North Georgia hills and share cherished recipes from my mother and grandmothers,” she explained to fans in Norcross, Georgia, who gathered in 16 | northsidewoman.com | june2015
May as part of the Gwinnett Public Library’s Meet the Author series. The book also shares tales of travels on the road with her band, and from the life she loves at home in country music’s capital. Leaning casually on the podium, she charmed the room with her big smile and warm manner as she shared the story of how her grandparents met, mooned over her mother’s homemade biscuits and described cooking with her 7-year-old daughter, Daisy. “We let the flour fly and clean up later!” she said with a laugh. Family is clearly the most important thing in Kimberly’s life, even in the midst of a successful music career. Little Big Town averages about 200 days per year out on the road, much of it spent with families in tow. “Three couples, three children, nannies, a band and crew. We’re quite the traveling circus at times,” she said. Kimberly installed a small convection oven in her tour bus and does what she can

to enjoy a taste of home out on the road, such as warm, bubbling Vidalia Onion Dip, a favorite of bandmate Phillip Sweet. From the very beginning, Kimberly’s cooking has been a part of Little Big Town’s routine. “When the band first came together, we would meet at my house a lot. Karen, Jimi and Phillip would come over and we would brainstorm ideas like band names or musical direction and we’d work up songs. And I would always cook. A good rehearsal cannot happen without some good sustenance,” she said, adding that her bandmates were willing guinea pigs for some of the recipes in her book, such as the Chocolate Cherry Cola Cake which Jimi Westbrook often requests on his birthday. Other recipes include Turkey Meatballs which she once made on her cooking show with fellow country music star Martina McBride, and Grilled Brioche with Warm Honey Strawberries, a particular favorite of Sugarland’s Kristian Bush. Most recipes, however, are from her family, such as Paula’s House Full of Folks Breakfast Casserole, which is served every Christmas morning at Kimberly’s mother’s home. Friendly Coconut Pie is included because “there comes a time when somebody you know needs a pie. I’m not saying pie can fix anything, but what I am saying is that taking a friend a pie – stopping in and showing up – well, that can only help.” Several recipes feature honey, which plays a role in each Little Big Town performance. According to Kimberly, before every show, “we gather together in a little huddle for a quick prayer and some rowdy words of encouragement. Afterward, we pass around a honey bear, tilting back our heads,
each taking a squeeze to soothe our throats before we go out and start singing.” Drizzling honey over roasted figs reminds Kimberly of the gigantic, shady fig trees from her childhood home, where she fought off yellow jackets each summer to get to the juicy, sweet morsels. When she moved to Nashville, her husband Stephen planted a fig tree in the yard, a surprise Kimberly calls “one of the sweetest gifts I’ve ever been given.” When pressed to choose a favorite recipe from the book, Kimberly was true to her North Georgia roots. Her grandmother’s Fresh Glazed Apple Cake is an appropriate choice for a gal from Cornelia, where a 15foot tall, bright red apple replica stands in the middle of downtown, next to the railroad depot. “I come from Apple Country and I’m an apple snob,” Kimberly said proudly. “Don’t give me some old, mushy apple. This cake is one of my favorite things to eat when I come home to Georgia.” Little Big Town will head to Nashville on June 10 for the live broadcast of the annual Country Music Awards. The group has won CMA’s Vocal Group of the Year three years in a row and is nominated in the same category yet again for 2015. But even as Kimberly’s star continues to rise, she stays firmly grounded with her deep, Georgia roots. “A few weeks ago, I held a cookbook signing event in my hometown of Cornelia,” she recalled. “We sold over 600 books that day. It was so humbling, so emotional, and so incredibly special to see all those people – people who raised me – lined up to welcome me home.” ■

1. Make the cake: Preheat the oven to 325˚F. Grease and lightly flour a Bundt pan. 2. Using an electric mixer, cream the oil and sugar in a large bowl. Add the eggs and vanilla and mix well. Sift in the flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Mix until well incorporated. The batter will be on the thick side. Add the apples and pecans to the bowl and mix well. 3. Pour the batter into the Bundt pan and bake until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, about 1

hour 10 minutes. 4. Meanwhile, make the glaze: Combine the sugar, evaporated milk and butter in a small saucepan and set over medium heat. Cook, stirring, for 3 minutes. Keep warm. 5. When the cake is done, leave it in the pan. Poke holes all over the cake with a skewer or toothpick. Pour three-quarters of the glaze on top of the cake while it’s in the pan and still hot. The holes will help soak up the glaze. Let it rest for 30 minutes. Invert the cake onto a cake plate and pour the remaining glaze on top. (If needed, heat the glaze slightly over low heat to bring it to a nice consistency for pouring.) june2015 | northsidewoman.com | 17

Top 10 items men should have in their wardrobes By LORI WYNNE
A
long with looking their fashionable best, women also enjoy a sharped dressed man in their lives. I asked Mark Fonseca of Fonseca Clothiers, a male wardrobe consultant and colleague of mine, his suggestions for basics every man should own. Regardless of the stage of life, career, dress code or lack of dress code at work, these items will make sure your man is ready to look his best when the occasion arises. Many women are responsible for choosing what the men in their lives wear, so here are my top 10 items every man should have in his closet. Consider using this list when choosing a Father’s Day gift or adding to your college-bound young man’s wardrobe this year.
Navy or gray two-button suit Fit and quality is important. Make sure the jacket can be buttoned comfortably, but not too loose. Today’s suits are trim fitting. The pants should not be too long. Ask for a single break when having your pants hemmed. A skillful tailor can create a handsome silhouette for all body types.
Navy blazer
Single breasted or double-breasted is your choice. Don’t try to skimp and use the navy jacket from the suit. Everyone can tell when you do that. Choose a fabric that can be used year round. The navy blazer can be worn casually with khakis or linen pants in the summer. Pair it with wool dark grey pants in the winter.
20 | northsidewoman.com | june2015
Cashmere or tweed sport coat This item allows your man to have a little fun with texture and pattern. Plaid is in and a subtle windowpane plaid is a great way to update his wardrobe. Pair it with solid trousers. It can be worn with a dress shirt, trim fit polo or mock turtleneck. Encourage him to forego his fleece jacket and use this when traveling to cooler climates. A man in a jacket commands more authority and respect than a man in a fleece workout jacket.
Crew neck sweater
Choose a color that will enhance his eye color. If your man’s hair has silver highlights, consider a brighter color to draw the attention to his face. Some men start to look washed out as they age. Colors like cobalt blue or raspberry, will complement his complexion. Choose cotton sweaters in the summer and splurge on cashmere or wool in the winter. Use cedar in his closet to protect the natural fibers from bugs.
The perfect white button-down shirt
Fit is important. If he needs a custom shirt to fit his massive biceps, it will be the best money you ever spent. If he wears a white shirt often, consider replacing it every six months. Encourage him to wear white undershirts under all of his dress shirts. He will be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
Quality dark denim jeans.
Your man probably already has jeans to wear while cleaning out the garage. Make sure he has some updated “date night” jeans as well. These can be closer fitting on the leg than the other denim he owns.
Brands like AG have a lot of stretch in their denim to ensure comfort.
Flat front khakis.
Even if your man wears jeans to work every day, he needs a pair of khakis. They can be dressed up or down for business meetings, a beach wedding or dinner at the clubhouse.
Black or brown lace-up dress shoes.
Footwear makes the man. According to Mark Fonseca, the first thing a woman notices about a man is his shoes. My advice: keep them polished and in good condition.
Pocket squares.
Consider this inexpensive accessory for the fashionforward man in your life. A pocket square adds color and class to a jacket and is more comfortable than a tie.
A tuxedo!
With all of the fundraising galas and events in the area, a well-connected and well-heeled man will need a tuxedo on more than one occasion. Tailoring is essential and will have him looking and feeling like Bond… James Bond. ■

Wealth management was not something I had necessarily planned on pursing early in my career. In the 70s and early 80s, I was working in the banking industry and was introduced to a manager at Merrill Lynch, who explained the company to me. He ended up offering me a position, and I decided to take a chance on it. I liked that the firm had a large presence, and I could tell there were a lot of other employees at the firm who would offer me support along the way. Additionally, being part of a large company like Merrill Lynch provided me with more opportunity to advance my career, which I found to be very important.
What obstacles, if any, did you face on your way up the corporate ladder?
There are always going to be obstacles – it’s just a matter of recognizing them and figuring out how to overcome them. The biggest obstacle I faced when I joined Merrill Lynch 30 years ago was being one of the few women in the industry. I had very few female role models, but knew I needed to find somebody who was willing to take me under their wing and provide sound advice. So, I didn’t have mentors that looked like me, but I always had multiple mentors. And, I still do to this
day. My hope is that I am able to mentor as many people as I had willing and open to mentoring me.
What gives you the most satisfaction at work?
When a client says, “I really can’t do this without you,” or when they can’t or won’t make a financial decision without calling me first, that’s the biggest compliment I could receive. That is what really gives me the most satisfaction. It lets me know I am doing my job well and that my clients are well taken care of.
What advice would you give to young women interested in pursuing a career in business?
Go for it! The financial industry is not gender-based, and neither are the clients. When you have a woman in the financial industry, the most common misconception is that if you are a female financial advisor, you only work with female clients. The great thing about my industry is that it is really flexible for women, especially when you have children. It’s also based around truly caring for your clients, which I think comes naturally for most women. I would tell all young women considering a career in the financial industry to definitely go for it.
Where do you see the greatest opportunities for young people today?
There are a lot of great opportunities for young people today. Within the past few years, I have brought two young people into my practice. I did this because they keep me young and relevant, and they also keep my clients up to speed on what’s going on with the younger generation. My advice for young people is to become associated with an older group or industry and share their energy and knowledge. For example, young people have a lot of experience with social media, so it’s a great opportunity for them to share this expertise with those who may not be as up to speed on it. No matter what industry you are in, you have to realize that there will always be new ways to do things. If you’re not flexible enough to learn a new way to do something or a new way to offer a product or service, then you might as well start considering retirement right now. Young people have a great energy and passion, and for me, it’s important to have them around. ■

Interiors
orth Atlanta is a hub for trendy-yet-refined interior decor. With plenty of brick and mortar stores to choose from, the difficult part is picking which styles best reflect your personality and taste. Below, experts offer their views on the staples and fads.
First Impressions...
F
irst impressions are always important, at least I like to think that they are. Let’s talk about entrances, nothing says welcome to your guests better than a beautifully appointed receiving area. Before ever entering your home or business a visual impression is made and sets the tone for both you and your guests. We are fortunate to live in a climate that is conducive to placing seasonal plants at our entry doors. Topiaries placed in scale appropriate containers, which are healthy and manicured make a pleasing statement. When using potted annuals keep them fresh and current with the season, unlike the faded leafless poinsettia that presents itself well into Spring. Assuming most of us do not have butlers receiving our guests as we wait graciously in our salons, we more often personally greet them in our foyers. Define your personal taste and style with perfectly chosen wall art, or placed sculptures. A beautiful size appropriate rug, or inlaid floor is sure to be noted. The area should remain free of clutter, a stair case can be dramatic and impressive, however, one cluttered with piled collections waiting to
be carried up or down has less of an appeal. A well placed mirror over a console table serves both you and your guests, vanity wins every time! When space permits a center table boasting a magnificent fresh floral arrangement is stunning. An empty coat closet appointed with boutique style hangers, a shelf for your guest’s handbags and a full length mirror attached to the inside of the door reflects a thoughtful host. Powder rooms are another place in your home that are sure to impress your guests when they are perfectly appointed. If you are contemplating wall coverings this is the place to do it! Whether the room is glamorous or simple in style please anticipate your guest’s needs. In the absence of a chamber maid providing a fresh linen hand towel to your guests, be sure to have an ample supply of them, no one wants to share a soiled towel. Monogrammed disposable hand towels are always a nice touch. A decanter filled with mouthwash is often an appreciated surprise. Placing a simple bud vase with a fresh floral stem will define your attention to detail. The powder room that has been
wired with stereo speakers insures, privacy, comfort and is sure to make an impression. Most importantly keep in mind that you are the one to be first impressed with your environment! ■

What’s New in Bathrooms?
I
t’s been said that bathrooms take a backseat in all new homes. Many in Atlanta are opting out of cultured marble to granite, quarts and widespread faucets and out with the brass on plumbing and shower doors. Vanities also have great new trends with taller heights up to 36” and options with furniture moldings, wall mounted
and plenty of deep drawers for storage. White is still a favorite but with endless options of larger tiles with more style and less grout. Let Snappy Kitchens help you find the right combination of products and design for your bathroom project. ■

ummer is here, and so are mosquitoes. Living in Georgia, we are very familiar with how difficult it can be to be outdoors without getting mosquito bites, especially during our warm summer months. As you may know, mosquitoes will bite dogs and cats as readily as they will bite us. But our furry friends are in danger of catching one thing from mosquitoes that we can’t – heartworm infection. Mosquitoes carry the

infective stage of a parasite commonly known as heartworm. Heartworm infections can lead to serious health issues and ultimately death. Heartworm infections are easily preventable, and prevention is a veterinarian’s preferred treatment against this potentially deadly infection. In veterinary medicine, preventing heartworms is the gold standard because it is affordable and safest for
our pets. The cost for treating a dog that has been infected with heartworms is approximately equivalent to purchasing heartworm prevention for 11 years. It is also very important to keep in mind that the treatment is not only a significant monetary investment, but also an involved treatment that our pets have to endure. Treatment protocol for heartworm infection has to
be followed correctly in order to have the best possible outcome. So if your pet is already on heartworm prevention, keep it up. If your pet is not on heartworm prevention, please be sure to contact your veterinarian and schedule an appointment for heartworm testing and preventive. The American Animal Hospital Association recommends that our pets get tested yearly, even while on monthly preventative. This is to ensure that our pets are free of heartworm infection. ■

Five ways to protect your skin from UV rays
W
hile being outside and active on sunny summer days is a good thing, don’t forget to be kind to your skin. The American Cancer Society shares the following five ways to help limit your exposure to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, which have been linked to skin cancer. Learn more at www.cancer.org. With a bit of precaution, you can feel good about having fun in the sun!
1. Use sunscreen
TA
Even with proper sunscreen use, some UV rays get through, which is why staying in the shade and using other forms of sun protection is also important. An SPF of at least 30 is recommended for UVB protection (although this says nothing about UVA s rays). “Broad spectrum” sunscreens protect de & ti w o ps for men against both UVA and UVB rays. Ideally, about 1 ounce of sunscreen (about a shot glass or palmful) should be used to cover the arms, legs, neck and face of an average adult. Reapply every two hours to maintain protection. And don’t forget your lips; lip balm with sunscreen is also available.
KE

Be Sun Smart this summer!

4. Wear a hat
A hat with at least a 2- to 3-inch brim all around is ideal to protect the ears, eyes, forehead, nose and scalp. A baseball cap protects the front and top of the head, but not the neck or the ears, where skin cancers commonly develop. Straw hats are not as protective as hats made of tightly woven fabric.
5. But don’t I need Vitamin D from the sun?
Your skin makes vitamin D naturally when you are in the sun, but at this time, doctors aren’t sure what the optimum level of vitamin D is. Whenever possible, it’s better to get vitamin D from your diet or vitamin supplements rather than from sun exposure, because dietary supplements do not increase cancer risk and are typically more reliable ways to get the amount you need. ■
2. Protect your skin with clothing
Clothes provide different levels of UV protection. Dark colors generally provide more protection than light colors, and tightly woven fabrics are best. Dry fabric protects more than wet fabric. If you can see light through a fabric, UV rays can get through, too. Some companies now make clothing that’s lightweight, comfortable and protects against UV exposure even when wet. Look for labels with a higher UPF value.
3. Wear sunglasses that block UV rays
UV-blocking sunglasses protect the delicate skin around the eyes, as well as the eyes themselves. Darker glasses are not necessarily better, as UV protection comes from an invisible chemical applied to the lenses. Look for a label that says “Meets ANSI UV requirements” to be sure you are blocking 99 percent of UV rays. Children need smaller versions of real, protective adult sunglasses – not toy sunglasses.

Does size matter? Tips on enhancing his manhood for our pleasure
H
ow many times have you met an amazing guy and the two of you hit it off really well? He was drop dead gorgeous – or at least attractive enough to say yes to a date and charming enough to consider going out with him a second and maybe even a third time. Eventually the dating moves into the zone of intimacy and you find yourself curious about what he has going on down there. As women, should we even concern ourselves with the size of our partner’s penis? Are we frightful that if a man is less endowed he wouldn’t be able to please us sexually? So let’s just raise the question…does size really matter? A study conducted by the British Journal of Urology International suggests that at least 85 percent of women that were surveyed were satisfied with the size and proportion of their partner’s manhood. Understandably, women often wonder whether a less endowed man will be able to reach their pleasure spot to help them reach their climax. After all, the experience of reaching the orgasm is the goal of sexual intercourse and pleasure for both men and women. There are several things to consider. Is it the size or is it his performance that enhances the sexual pleasure? There are studies that show that women prefer
less length but more width or girth. Eighty percent of men are concerned with the size of their penis. Erected, the average length is 5.6 inches in length and 4.8 inches in circumference and 1.5 inches in width. As women, it is important to know the length and the width of our vagina as well, so that we can understand how our body fits with our partner’s during intercourse. The vagina is very elastic and therefore has the potential to expand. Women go from 3 to 4 inches in depth when not aroused but can expand to 5 to 7 inches in depth when aroused. During arousal, just as men become erect, our vaginas tend to respond and can also expand up to 4.75 inches in width. Knowing and understanding your body as a woman can be key to responding favorably with a less endowed partner. Here are a few things that can enhance and help you reach your maximum pleasure with a less endowed partner.
Enhance foreplay
The ANSWER:
Yes size matters, but more importantly, it is how you use what you have to enhance the sexual experience. Be creative! ■
Foreplay enhances the level of sexual enjoyment between partners. It should be a required precursor used to explore your partner’s body and find those pleasure spots. Consider foreplay with your partner, especially if his manhood is less endowed. Foreplay is a great tool for both to learn how to achieve the ultimate orgasm
