THERE’S ONE THING WORSE THAN KNOWING YOU HAVE LUNG CANCER. NOT KNOWING.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death because often there are no symptoms until it has spread. The good news is a lung cancer screening can help detect it early when there are more treatment options. Northside Hospital Cancer Institute offers a low dose CT screening if you’re 55 – 77 years old and a current or previous smoker. It’s quick and easy and could save your life.

Jovita Moore urges women to ‘build each other up’

WBS TV Anchor, Jovita Moore.

ovita Moore grew up watching the news as a child, fascinated by what was happening every day in her native New York City and around the world. But it wasn’t until years later in college that she decided to make the business of news her career. “I didn’t know as a child what I wanted to be when I grew up,” said Moore, now the main anchor for the evening newscasts on WSB-TV Channel 2. “I was interested by news...and curious to watch, but I didn’t pursue news as a career until college.” In 1990 she earned her Master’s degree from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in New York City, and took her first job in television in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Eight years later, via stops at stations in Fort Smith, Arkansas and Memphis, Tennessee, Moore came to Atlanta. She is now closing in on two decades at Channel 2. In 2012, she was tapped to replace Monica (Kaufman) Pearson, who was retiring as the main anchor after a career spanning nearly 40 years at WSB-TV. Filling the shoes of Atlanta’s media royalty was a bit surreal at first, noted Moore. “For the first few months, I just pretended she was on a long vacation!” laughs Moore, who said she finds it hard to believe she’s been in the anchor desk for four years. Moving to the most prominent role in the news station took some getting used to, she notes, after years as a reporter. “Being the main anchor is so different from being a reporter, [where] the opportunities vary with each job,” said Moore. “As anchor, I’m representing the station all the time, and there’s a leadership and authority that comes with the position. You become ‘the face’ of the station and that’s a huge responsibility.” She’s getting accustomed to being recognized wherever she goes, but understands that goes with the job. “You can’t have it both ways - being on local news but

not being recognized everywhere you go,” said Moore, who lives in Brookhaven. “I’m comfortable with it, it’s never been a problem for me.” She said people are always a bit surprised by how “real” television personalities are when they meet them off camera. “I’m not sure why they’d see us any other way but many do,” Moore laughs. “I shop for groceries for my family...I put gas in my car...I pick up clothes at the cleaners...just like everyone else.” Her days are long, beginning in the early afternoon for editorial meetings, then into the makeup chair, before taking her place in front of the camera beginning at 4 p.m., and anchoring the 5, 6 and 11 p.m. newscasts. “A typical days also means community events prior to 2 p.m., and events on the weekends that I emcee or attend as a representative for WSB,” said Moore. “My day ends around midnight.” She is known for the countless hours she devotes to civic associations and non-profit organizations across metro Atlanta, with groups devoted to children and the elderly closest to her heart. “Our House Atlanta is one of them. How can we allow newborn babies to be homeless? We can’t,” said Moore, a mom of two. “So it’s a cause that’s special to me. Meals On Wheels Atlanta is absolutely necessary and relevant to all of us. We have to watch over our elderly and shut-in neighbors.” Recently Moore served as the featured speaker at the Alpharetta Chamber of Commerce “Women Who Walk the Walk” event. The annual event raises funds and awareness for various charities in North Fulton, as well as providing a networking opportunity for women. Moore said she was honored to be a part of this year’s event which focused on empowering women. The event also provided an opportunity to interact directly with the community, instead of just through their televisions. “I think anytime you can get a group of women together in a room to share stories that are uplifting, positive and inspiring, is a good thing,” said Moore. “[Women] should focus more on building each other up, not tearing each other down. When I got the invitation to participate, there was no way I’d turn it down.” But for all her many accomplishments – which includes a number of Emmy Awards – she says her most important accomplishments are her children. “If I didn’t do this job, I’d be a full time mom meaning there would be no place I’d have to be at 2 p.m. every day, and I’d be home for dinner every night.” ■

candy@northsidewoman.com ue Baker grew up in Louisville, surrounded by Kentucky bluegrass and lady slippers, but now finds life even sweeter in Milton among the thousands of orchids she raises alongside her husband, Don. The two operate Rainbeau Orchids, which has been specializing in orchids since 2004, and has more than 60,000 flowers in various stages of development at any given time. The nursery is now the largest greenhouse in the Southeast devoted exclusively to orchids. “We decided to specialize in orchids in 2004 because it was the growth segment in horticulture,” said Sue Baker. “The market was changing and orchids were becoming more affordable, so we decided we would try our hand at just orchids. It was a wise decision.” Baker spent more than three decades as a nurse in a Kentucky hospital, raising her two children (and welcoming five grandchildren) until moving to Milton 12 years ago when she married Don. The two had been high school sweethearts, and reconnected through a friend at a high school reunion decades later. “I got his e-mail address from that mutual friend and we started writing… [and] one

thing led to another,” Baker explained. Their reconnection eventually brought her to Georgia, where Don was running a successful nursery in Milton. Sue Baker began taking an active role in the operations, easily switching from caring for people to caring for plants. “My thumb has always been green, but mainly with outdoor gardening,” said Baker, noting nursery gardening was quite a bit different than tending to a home garden. “My first experience with growing indoor plants came with Don’s reappearance in my life.” Her husband had been operating Rainbeau Flower Farm since 1990, selling what Baker describes as “every houseplant imaginable” including hydrangeas, azaleas, mums, and others. “The care for every plant was different and it was absolutely wearing us out trying to keep up with them,” said Baker. The name changed to Rainbeau Orchids and business quickly took off, filling a growing need in the floral niche. The two recognized

The plants develop fungus from too much water and die.” Rainbeau Orchids is primarily a wholesale operation, but the couple opens the greenhouse on the weekends for retail business, as well as during the week by appointment. Being involved in the family business has also helped Sue Baker weather the storm of a cancer diagnosis in 2010. That year, she was diagnosed with a very rare blood disease, with a life expectancy given of five years. Newly

married and now in Atlanta, Baker’s survival instincts kicked in. “I told Don that I did not marry him and move to Atlanta so I could die,” said Baker. Cutting edge treatment proved successful, and Baker is now defying the medical odds. “Thanks to a stem cell transplant and better forms of treatment, I am enjoying relatively good health,” she said, noting she still has residual issues that are likely permanent. “But, I am alive, and plan to be for a long time yet.” She feels fortunate to play an active role in Rainbeau Orchids, which she says keeps her mind busy with things other than her health. “I think of myself as the greenhouse manager and focus on this more than the cancer,” said Baker. “My goal was not to let the cancer consume my life. For the most part I

have been able to accomplish this.” Her days begin early, seeing the drivers off on their deliveries throughout the Southeast, before getting the next day’s deliveries planned and scheduled. The afternoons are spent on phone calls and orders. “I often take short breaks during the day to refresh,” said Baker. “I handle the [administrative side] and Don does the day-to-day chores to keep the plants in good shape, and oversees the potting of the plants.” In and around their home, her husband does quite a bit of container gardening, but, surprisingly, few orchids make the transition from business to personal. “Our house is always in bloom, but inside our house we keep very few orchids,” laughs Baker. “We see enough of them throughout the day!” ■

New Alpharetta restaurant is ‘sister’ to Roswell location By CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

O

ne of the latest additions to the restaurant scene in downtown Alpharetta has quickly found a following among the many newcomers and old guard establishments scattered around the

square. Opening last December, just in time for the holidays, Ceviche Taqueria and Tequila Bar in Alpharetta may have a familiar feel to those who spend time on Canton Street in downtown Roswell. “Yes, this is the sister location,” said Mikka Orrick, owner of the Alpharetta location. “We wanted to duplicate the success we’ve had in Roswell [and] so far the reaction and response from the community and the city has been very positive!” While the menus and food offerings are identical, there are some changes, including a much larger bar at the Alpharetta location, and a side patio for outdoor dining. “We are not your typical Mexican spot,” said Orrick. “We offer true authentic Mexican food with a twist, a wide variety of tequila and a knowledgeable staff.”

12 | northsidewoman.com | june2016

She noted the “keys” to Ceviche’s appeal is the laidback atmosphere, emphasis on the customer experience, and fresh ingredients. The choice of 70 different tequilas for sipping or blending into margaritas adds to the experience, as Mikka Orrick, owner. well. For first-time guests, Orrick suggests starting with the house specialties including Elsa’s chicken enchiladas Verde, fish tacos, mahi ceviche, along with skinny margaritas or any of the eight beers on tap. Opening a location in Alpharetta placed Ceviche right in the hotspot of a growing entertainment and dining destination on the Northside. With Avalon just down the road, and the revitalization of downtown Alpharetta well underway, the decision to open here was an easy one. “We had looked around for a while at different cities and possible locations,” said Orrick. “But Alpharetta being so close [was a positive], and with a very similar downtown vibe as Roswell when we opened in 2007.” She says the current growth in the downtown area will only bring more quality shops and restaurants to the area. “We are so excited about the [reception for Ceviche] since the start, as well as the future of this location in such a promising and growing city,” she added. Ceviche aims to be more than just a place to grab dinner, and has

something added nearly every night of the week. Trivia is on Tuesday nights, “food truck” Thursdays, live music every Saturday night on the side patio, and karaoke will get going in June. The restaurant is also looking forward to being a part of the many special events on Milton Avenue year-round. “We want to always stay connected to the community and be involved in local charity events. We are so excited for our future in Alpharetta. It’s been a great start!” said Orrick. ■ june2016 | northsidewoman.com | 13

or those of us of a certain generation, Saturday afternoons were never quite complete until the smooth, sultry sounds of Bob Ross came through our console televisions, describing in detail the art of the landscape on his “Joy of Painting” show. For Roswell native Heather Lund, the seeds of her lifelong love affair with art were nurtured in those moments. “I remember watching Bob Ross on TV with my dad, and I’d say, ‘Dad, I need a fan brush!’ or something along those lines, until one day he got me all set up with some Heather Lund, illustrator. paints, canvas and brushes,” said Lund, laughing at those memories. “I was probably 5 years old at the time.” Even at that young age, Lund was focused on a life include Coca-Cola, Universal Studios, the Rock and Roll of creativity, taking art classes in school and privately Hall of Fame and Paula Deen. from elementary through high “I absolutely love my job,” said school, then graduating with Lund, who now calls Woodstock degrees in art from the Savannah “Never in a million years College of Art and Design. women in art embedded in her work. “It’s like making a new friend,” Lund confided. She is excited about her project illustrating a coloring book for the 2016 Roswell Summer Puppet Series, in which the drawings are inspired by the puppet show stories. Lund was delighted to illustrate pages from her favorite childhood stories including “Hansel and Gretel” and “Jack and the Beanstalk.” “I really hope the children (or adults) who color the book have as much fun as I did drawing it!” said Lund, who worked closely with the Roswell Cultural Arts Center on the project. Unlike most artists, Lund has no preferred media in her work (“it depends what day of the week you ask me,” she noted) and loves all the different forms of drawing. “Right now, I really love working with gouache, which is a paint that seems like a mixture of watercolor and acrylic paints,” she said. “I’ve also worked extensively with pen, ink, watercolor, colored pencils, screen printing, acrylic paints, collage, you name it!” While her media changes constantly, her drawing style has generally stayed the same, honed through years of undergraduate and graduate classes to gain a confidence in her unique drawing technique. Lund finds inspiration everywhere, but says simply being around fellow illustrators and discussing ideas is often the basis for her work. Once a month, she participates in gallery shows at Paper Ghost Studio in Candler Park (http://paperghoststudio.com/), where coming up with concepts for the shows “forces” her to produce personal work. “The [May] show’s theme is ‘Cats vs. Dogs’ [and] I don’t anticipate I’ll be short on ideas for that show,” said Lund of her affinity for animals, particularly cats. In her spare time, Lund teaches a weekly community art class for 10- 14-year-olds called Illustration Fun with Heather Lund at The Art Place in Marietta. Here, she teaches students how to explore their creativity through illustration using various media. She calls these classes her “fun time,” and it reminds her of the time she spent with her art teachers at all levels of schooling. “My teachers are one of the biggest reasons I felt capable of making art into a career,” said Lund. “To be able to pay that forward and help future artists is extremely rewarding.” She is saddened that some schools have decreased student access to art and music classes, as budget cuts have hit the “soft” subjects quite hard. “I find the underfunding of art education absolutely unacceptable,” said Lund. “Students need art. Speaking from personal experience, art and band classes were the light of my existence in school. If these kids are denied access to art, we may be denying them an extremely fulfilling career path.” To see more of Heather Lund’s illustrations and artwork, visit www.heatherlund. format.com/ ■

Kismet in Roswell...

Couple finds romance at Roswell wedding

Meet at Roswell wedding, return for same 16 | northsidewoman.com | june2016

By HATCHER HURD

hatcher@appenmediagroup.com

K

arissa Hodges and Brandon Poppell were fated to be together, but fate had to be persistent. Karissa and Brandon went to the University of Florida, went to the same fraternity and sorority parties and had mutual friends. But it took the special magic of Roswell to finally bring them together. What better place for them to meet face-to-face than the elegant 1839 Primrose Cottage and the wedding of a mutual friend? They didn’t meet cute, they met romantic. “We noticed each other at Primrose Cottage. Although we knew of each other’s names because of our mutual friendship with the groom Thomas Carson, we never locked eyes until Thomas’s wedding in Roswell. We were seated at the same table, immediately a spark flew when we saw each other. We knew something happened,” Karissa said. They began talking and realized how they went to the same college and parties but never connected. “Then we also recognized that we went to the same summer camp. It turned out that Brandon that week was moving to California near where I lived. It was such a strange coincidence. He called me when he arrived and the rest is history,” she said. “Without Roswell we would have never connected. We knew when we got engaged that there was no more meaningful place in the country than Roswell for our wedding to take place.” Asked how to describe how she found Roswell, she explained it this way:

“Charming, quaint, friendly, romantic, beautiful and historic are a few words that describe Roswell to me” she said. “Roswell is a small-town place that makes you feel welcomed. Roswell is worth coming back to again and again. Life slows down here and makes hours, days and weeks so much more enjoyable. It truly is a magical place.” So May 14 at Roswell’s historic Barrington Hall they were wed, followed by a huge reception at Founder’s Hall on Canton Street. Karissa said she was so glad she chose to come back to Roswell for her wedding. “All our guests fell in love with Roswell. They loved that this Southern small town is so beautiful. They loved that they could walk to so many places, eat at fantastic restaurants, tour historical homes. And were most of all charmed by their southern hospitality,” Karissa said. “It was so much more than we thought it would be. It was magical.”

sheweds Mother of the bride Lenore Hodges has raved about the wedding’s setting in Roswell, not just for its romantic setting and storybook ending, but the way the bridal professionals embraced her and Karissa to make everything absolutely perfect. She said she and Karissa were blown away by their professionalism, their attention to detail and most of all their attention to her. “What I loved about Roswell’s vendors is that when I spoke with these people I felt a genuine concern about achieving my vision within my budget. That was completely different than when I looked in California where I live,” Karissa said. “There it was all about cost, all they cared about was the sale and were not very caring or concerned about much more. They did not listen like the wonderful vendors in Roswell did. “Gillian Marto our wedding planner understood our goal to use all Roswell Vendors and helped us achieve this dream - she is amazing [www. eventsofalifetimeatlanta.com],” Karissa said. Shelby and Emily at Founders Hall (for the reception) worked with her “step by step” and even skyped her into a meeting they had with the wedding planner and video photographer Carissa Bowes at Founders so she could make decisions with them. “Wedding Angels shipped the dress to me in California and told me to bring my dress to them when I came back for the wedding. They wanted to steam it the day before the wedding so it would be perfect. And no extra charge,” Karissa said. “They made me feel like they were all part of my wedding and helped me with making decisions especially when I was lost. To all these vendors that helped I feel so close to them, they will always be a part of my life.” How close? She is planning to celebrate her first anniversary in Roswell and said she can’t wait to work with them again. ■

ROSWELL HAS HOST OF WEDDING OPTIONS Dottie Etris, director of the Roswell Convention and Visitors Bureau, lights up when you want to talk about brides in Roswell. “Roswell is truly unique when it comes to weddings. Many areas have a place or two as a venue where someone can get married other than their local church. But, Roswell has over 35 venues in all,” Etris said. You like outdoors, Etris suggests the Chattahoochee Nature Center pavilion overlooking Kingfisher Pond - or their rooftop garden. Then there is Historic Roswell’s town square park and the Roswell River Landing - with its spectacular view of the Chattahoochee. Of course Roswell’s historic homes have their unique appeal. “Those venues include Primrose Cottage, Naylor Hall, Kimball Hall, Roswell Founders Hall, the Gardens at Great Oaks, and the ambiance of the Old Mill where Ivy Hall and Roswell Mill Club are located,” Etris said. Weddings are possible on the grounds at 117-year-old Barrington Hall. Stately antebellum Bulloch Hall with its pavilion and lovely grounds was the site of the marriage of Mittie Bulloch and Theodore Roosevelt Sr. “For those who wish something a bit different - Roswell has a facility with a quirky yet trendy warehouse vibe with burnished concrete floors and gritty industrial charm. Or they may select a facility with exposed brick walls that add a raw backdrop for any color palette. Sports enthusiasts may wish to utilize Andretti’s with their large banquet space” she said. But there are even more when it comes to receptions and the rehearsal dinner. Many of our restaurants have rooms that can be used for gatherings of this nature as well as the full service hotels and the event facilities. How Romantic is Roswell? Well, there again, Roswell’s trendy Canton Street restaurants district provides great romantic evenings with a wide selection of culinary options and specialty cocktails. That’s just scratching the surface or Romantic Roswell. For information go to visitroswell.com. ■

n my 20s, I was a certified optician. My initial interest in the industry came from my own experience wearing glasses as a child, and then contact lenses as a teenager. My favorite part of my job was helping people choose eyewear that complimented their faces and suited their lifestyles. Perhaps this is where my love of helping people look their personal best began. I loved seeing people’s faces light up as they looked in the mirror wearing their new fashion eyewear. If you wear glasses every day, you should own more than one pair. Think of eyewear as an accessory, like jewelry. Consider owning a business-like metal frame for a professional look and a playful statement plastic frame for a trendy casual look. If you find a frame shape you love, I advise owning it in different colors to complement your wardrobe. With competitively priced online eyewear companies, fashionable eyewear is within everyone’s budgets. If you have a light prescription and single-vision lenses, buying eyewear online is suitable for your needs. Some popular online sites are Zennicoptical.com, Coastal.com and glasses.com. Don’t forget to use your “firsttimers” discount! Glasses.com has a virtual try-on feature that uses pictures you take of yourself with an iPhone or iPad. This technology is easy to use, even for a seasoned fashionista in her “prime” (aka technology is not my strong suit). Road test: With my hair pulled back, I took several pictures of my face from different angles according to the directions on the app for glasses.com. I was able to choose several frames and “try them on” the picture of my face and see them from different angles, and was even able to change how high I chose to wear them on my nose and change the pantoscopic tilt.

Pros: My driving glasses arrived in a timely manner. They were competitively priced. Cons: I had to adjust the eyeglasses myself. Even after using the virtual “tryon” feature, they looked smaller on my face in real life. If you need multifocal point lenses (i.e. bifocals or progressives), seek out a local and reputable eyewear professional. Carter’s Mobile Opticians is owned by Roswell resident Rusty Carter. Carter brings his decades of experience as an optician right to your home or office. He has a huge selection of eyewear for men, women and children in a variety of budgets in his vehicle that he brings to you. Road test: I recently had my eyes examined and asked Carter to come to my home to help me pick out my first pair of eyeglasses with progressive lenses. As a former optician, I was impressed with his professionalism and passion for the eyewear industry. I chose a Germanmade high-fashion frame and added anti-reflective lenses to my progressive lenses. I was thrilled to see Carter back in my home in three days with my beautiful new fashion eyewear. My husband was so impressed with the service that he asked Carter to check his shooting glasses as he held his rifle in firing position and looked down his scope. This would only be possible in our home. He couldn’t take his rifle to the doctor’s office. See Carter at yourglasses.com Pros: One-on-one personal and professional service in the comfort of my own home or office. Great for busy professionals or homebound people. Glasses arrived in a timely manner. Cons: If you have a certain frame in mind, he may not be able to get it for you as quickly as one he has in stock.

Fashion eyewear trends:

The overall look is geeky chic. Instead of eyewear disappearing on your face, trendsetters are boldly wearing oversized frames in fashionable acetate or metal or a combination of the two.

For Women:

Translucent plastic frames are popular this year. Updated cat eyes, or oversized frames in soft colors that follow the pastel shades of the colors of the year. Light pink, blue and gray are popular colors.

For Men:

Faux wood grain finishes are popular this year. Round lenses with metal bridges and plastic frames. Think futuristic-retro. Two-tone acetate in round or square shaped frames.

Unisex:

Updated semirimless in round shapes for men and women. These are definitely statement eyewear. Consider them for sunglasses this year for a bold look.

Final tips: • • • •

Anti-reflective coating is your best friend. This allows everyone to see your beautiful eyes while you are seeing everything else crystal clear. Update your eyewear every year. Chipped paint on metal frames, scratched lenses and mossy nose pads can distract from even the most couture ensemble. When wearing eyeglasses it is extremely important to wear eye makeup. Your eyes are being framed by your eyeglasses, so highlight your eyes with eyeliner, eye shadow and mascara. Do not neglect your eyebrows. Whether you have bushy eyebrows or “barely there” eyebrows, maintain an attractive shape with brow color and selective hair removal. ■

‘Scars tell stories and show strength’ Abbie Leslie shines through life-changing diagnosis By KATHLEEN STURGEON

kathleen@appenmediagroup.com

R

are is the person who finds out she has a mass in her brain and says her life became better after the diagnosis. Abbie Leslie is one of those unique individuals. The now 18-year-old recent Cambridge High School graduate started having frequent migraines at age 9. But it wasn’t until four days after she turned 12 that she had an MRI and the radiologist told Leslie’s mom to take her to the emergency room at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. “They were waiting for us,” Leslie said. ‘The neurosurgeon on staff told me I had a large mass in my brain. I just asked, ‘Well, can you take it out?’” Despite the scary news, she says her diagnosis was the best thing that ever happened to her. “I have a whole new respect for nurses and doctors,” she said. “The entire medical field is inspirational.” She even hopes to one day work in the rehabilitation center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as a nurse or physician’s assistant. The dream to help rehabilitate children was born when she met one of her cabin mates at Camp Sunshine, which provides recreational, educational and support programs for children with cancer and their families in Atlanta. “My cabin mate, Khoebie, lost one of her legs to bone cancer,” Leslie said. “She walks with a prosthetic leg. She explained her journey of rehabilitation. I found it to be so inspirational. It was the little things, like giving her a piggyback ride to the lake, that made me realize that I wanted to work in pediatric rehabilitation.” And had it not been for her own life-changing diagnosis, Leslie wouldn’t have been involved at Camp Sunshine at all. “I never really had a tough time,” she said. “Camp Sunshine helped me cope with my illness. It showed me that I’m not going through this alone. The support of Camp Sunshine is a beautiful thing. It’s therapeutic. It’s a breath of fresh air.” However, even with her positive attitude, Leslie’s life is basically divided into two halves: her medical life and her normal, teen life. She learned to balance school, doctors’ appointments and cheerleading. “After my surgeries, I wasn’t allowed to tumble or stunt for 20 | northsidewoman.com | june2016

months,” she said. “It was difficult not being able to cheer, but taking a break from cheer made me realize how much I loved the sport.” Six years after her diagnosis, Leslie is leading a life of a typical 18-year-old in many ways. Shortly after this interview, she walked across a stage and accepted her high school diploma. She’ll be heading off to the University of Georgia as an exercise sports science major in a few months. And she was a cheerleader at Cambridge and enjoys staying active, especially going to the YMCA. Technically, she isn’t in remission and may never be because, as Leslie said, “brain tumors don’t just disappear with a little chemotherapy. “I was stable for three years after my first surgery and a year of chemotherapy,” she said. “Then, my tumor grew a little, which led to my second surgery when I was a freshman in high school. Now I’m finishing my senior year on a clinical trial. I feel like I will always have to deal with my illness, but that’s not a bad thing to me. It’s normal for me. It’s become part of who I am.” And part of her fighting spirit is helping other girls who are undergoing cancer treatment and concerned about issues like potentially losing their hair. While hair loss was a side effect Leslie didn’t experience, many of her friends have. “It’s devastating for them,” she said. “Going to prom or homecoming bald is not something I would want to do but I would because why should girls feel any less beautiful? I didn’t have to worry about going to the pool and showing a port because I didn’t have one. A lot of my friends were nervous about that.” What she does have, however, is a “massive scar” on her head. “Hair doesn’t grow along my scar so a lot of people question me about it,” she said. “I will be very open about my scar and just say, ‘It’s not a weird part. I didn’t cut my hair. It’s a scar from brain surgery.’” Leslie’s suggestion to any girl diagnosed with cancer is to go to the place where much of her inner peace may have begun taking shape: She would advise girls to attend Camp Sunshine. “I’d tell them to make the most out of their bald head because people look at their face, not their hair,” she said. “I’d tell them that scars are not ugly. Scars tell stories and show strength.” ■

Abbie Leslie says cheerleading is one of her passions.

Megan Wargula’s debut novel, “Riley Carson and the Cherokee Caves,” doubles as a publishing-based pet philanthropy: Some of the book’s profits will be donated to animal-welfare groups. Characters are even named for both of her dogs, Riley and Finlay.

T

he debut novel from Megan Wargula, a self-proclaimed “dog nerd,” is quite literally a pet project. Not only does “Riley Carson and the Cherokee Caves” revolve around a dog-loving Roswell girl, the book will even benefit animals in need. Wargula, who created an imprint, Hound and Thistle LLC, to self-publish her books, is donating a portion of the profits to animal-welfare groups. Wargula’s next signing will be during Alive in Roswell June 16 from 5-9 p.m. at Pet Fancy on Canton Street. She will be the guest of Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, which also makes an appearance in her book. Below is a preview of subjects she’ll be sharing with her “middle grade” target audience, though all readers are sure to be entertained by Wargula’s tale. Featuring an “average” girl who rescues Roswell’s beleaguered pets – with a hint of paranormal activity and a flash of Cherokee gold – her book is bound to have broad appeal.

Tell us a little about yourself and your background

I’m a native of Atlanta, grew up in Dunwoody, and graduated from the University of Georgia. I’m definitely a proud Georgian. By day I work as a graphic designer and my spare time is spent working on my writing and spending time with my husband, Michael, and dogs.

What inspired you to write this, your first book?

I have always been a dog lover and support several animal rescue groups. My Facebook feed had become filled with stories of homeless dogs and worse, animals that had been mistreated. I was overwhelmed and prayed about what I could do to make a difference. Simply donating what I could to rescue groups each year wasn’t enough. I decided I should write a book geared toward young readers that would entertain and educate them.

goodbooks

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Yes! I don’t want to ruin the ending, so I won’t say exactly what it is, but it’s a very important message about a specific issue that affects dogs that people need to be made aware of. My characters also discuss responsible pet ownership, like spay and neuter, how to approach an unfamiliar dog, and that pets are for life, not disposable.

up with the color scheme and I did the rest. I had to have a unique title font that spoke to the character, so I drew the “Riley Carson” font. Hopefully you can tell that the ‘i’ in Riley is the nose and mouth of a dog. I made the cave connecting to the creek look like an arrowhead because of the references to the Cherokee.

Considering one of your dogs is named Riley, are experiences based on events in your own life?

How are you publishing this book and why?

It’s funny because my parents keep asking me questions, trying to figure out who’s who in the story. While some experiences are based on events in my own life, not all of them are. I’ve had fun with my imagination. The first chapter is a tough one and based on a true story. It happened 12 years ago and I think I’m finally to the point where I can read that chapter without crying. Some of the stuff Riley and her friends do are a lot like my childhood. I should note that Riley’s best friend, Finn, is named after my other dog, Finlay. I can’t leave him out of the story!

This was a tough decision that led to lots of research. I considered traditional publishing, but in the end decided to self-publish for a few reasons. Control: I wanted to stay true to my message and I wasn’t sure if that would have been possible with traditional publishing. Time: I wanted to get this book out sooner rather than later and just getting a publishing deal can take years. Earnings: In the long run, I have the potential to earn more by selfpublishing and, therefore, can give more to charities.

Where can we buy or see your book?

Give us some insight into your main character. What does she do that is so special?

Right now my book is for sale in paperback and e-book on Amazon.

Riley is a sweet, compassionate girl who loves animals and is a bit of a tomboy. Riley’s compassion opens her up to receive an amazing gift. I don’t want to spoil it, but this is where some of the paranormal comes in.

You’re donating a portion of the profits to animal welfare groups. Tell us more about this unique, publishing-fueled philanthropy.

This book is the first in a series; tell us what you have in mind for future books.

Riley and her friends, Finn and Eve, will get up to more adventure in future books. I will tackle other animal welfare issues. Right now the focus is on dogs, but I can see that expanding into other animals, as there are many issues that should be addressed.

Tell us about the cover and how it came about.

I asked my dear friend, Andy Suggs, who has his own busy graphic design firm, Visualab, to assist me with the

cover. I knew I wanted it to be illustrated because I had fallen in love with the Harry Potter series illustrated by Mary Grandpre. This cover is simpler, but I think it’s perfect for the series. Andy drew the silhouettes and came

I feel that it’s important to not only educate the public with this book, but to give back to all the wonderful organizations that work tirelessly every day to improve the lives of animals. I want this book to be a huge success so I can donate lots of money to these amazing groups.

How can readers discover more about you and you work?

My website, www.RileyCarsonSeries.com is the place to go to learn more. Also, readers or their parents can sign up for my mailing list to get a sneak peek of the first three chapters. ■

How did you become a pilot?

I was drafted the day I earned my law degree. I joined the Navy and was a fighter pilot for seven years. I was very shy and quiet growing up. To survive as a fighter pilot I created an alternate persona to appear confident to the other pilots. I had two friends who died over the China Sea and two that were POWs. Do I have survivor guilt? No, I was a draftee!

We are being successful by incorporating high school kids and faith-based youth groups. Local youth and able-bodied siblings help kids with disabilities play ball on the traditional dirt baseball field and the artificial turf baseball field for wheelchairs. Twenty-three special education teachers help out at the Miracle League. Over 5,000 hours of community service is given here in one year. With these opportunities to serve, we are influencing the next generation of policymakers.

What else does the Miracle League do for kids with disabilities besides play baseball?

SUZANNE PACEY/STAFF

I felt a responsibility to honor my friends who died in the service. I wanted to build something exceptional. Dreams are like diamonds. A big one stirs a woman’s heart. Big dreams stir a man’s heart. I was a bachelor for 21 years with fancy cars, boats, a house on the river and jet-setting around the globe with flight attendants. At 55 years old I decided to settle down. We created this complex with bronze plaques under memorial trees around the fields to remember my friends and others who have died. For 15 years we have been serving children with a very broad spectrum of disabilities. Our field complex in Alpharetta’s North Park allows 240 people to play ball during the week. I just wanted kids to get sun on their faces and moms to find kindred spirits here. I found that families

Adding pets to your home

takes time and patience

Have a strategy in place for a successful transition BY CANDY WAYLOCK

candy@northsidewoman.com

S

ummer is here, the kids are home and it may seem like the right time to expand the family to include a new four-footed member. But keep in mind that all pets need an introduction period to acclimate into a new environment so give it time and patience. Cats and kittens are easier, since most are happy in a quiet room with access to food, water and a litterbox until they’ve had the chance to get used to their new surroundings. But dogs, being the social creatures they are, will take a little more thought and planning. Jennifer Lombardi, a longtime volunteer and foster “mom” with Angels Among Us Pet Rescue, has placed more than 160 rescued dogs into their forever homes – with only a handful not making the successful transition. “Getting a new dog, especially a puppy, is taking your life from zero to sixty immediately, and you have to be prepared, and patient,” advises the Forsyth mom of four kids and “too many to count” fosters and permanent pups. The most important advice is sticking to your daily routine so the dog can acclimate to you --- not the other way around. In addition, feed your pet at the same time each day, let him out on a schedule, walk on a schedule, etc. so your pet will get used to the routine. “Expect a two week transition time for your dog to begin fitting into your schedule, but that’s what makes the

dog secure and happy,” said Lombardi. “They eventually fit into the flow of your house and anticipate your activity.” Puppies take more work, she said, so owners need to set a lot of time aside for house training, boundaries, crate training and other interventions that will lead to a well behaved adult dog. “And understand that even if the dog is full grown at a year old, the puppy phase goes on for a long time beyond that,” said Lombardi. Introducing a new pet into a household with existing pets also takes a strategy. Lombardi recommends never letting the dogs go “nose to nose” on the first visit. “I always tell people to keep the new dog on a leash and walk past the [current] dog while he is being held by someone else,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll crate my new dog and let the other dogs smell them for a while before they are [together].” Gradually work up to an open visit, in the home or in a fenced yard, so you can continue to monitor their interactions in a safe environment. And recognize some dogs may never get along great, but should reach a level of tolerance. “And never feed the new and current dogs at the same time during the introduction phase until you are certain there are no food aggression issues,” said Lombardi. She suggests trying to be home as much as possible during the introductory phase so the dog feels secure in its new environment with family always close by. If you must leave, avoid giving the dog the run of the house until you’ve had a chance to understand his reaction to being alone. “It takes time for the trust to develop, especially with rescued, older dogs,” said Lombardi. “But the work is so worth it.” ■

Senior SCAM Alert!

Popular Scams affecting our Parents and Grandparents By SUE MCCORMICK Synergy HOMECARE

I

f you, your parent or grandparent is over 65, they probably grew up in an era when business was done with a firm handshake; unfortunately, crooks today are playing on that trust. The Federal Trade Commission says that fraud complaints to its offices by individuals 60 and older rose at least 47 percent between 2012 and 2014. Seniors are the predominant victims of impostor schemes, where criminals pose as authority figures and claim that money is owed. They also are hit hard by scams involving prizes, sweepstakes and gifts. Synergy HomeCare will be identifying the most common scams that target seniors, along with the warning signs of each scam and information on how you or your loved one can avoid becoming a victim. From Contractor Fraud to IRS Phone Scams, this information will be published in a multi-part series to start in June in the Health and Wellness Section of your local Appen Newspaper. Don’t miss them! You can also see our Senior Scam Alert Guide on our website at http://www.SynergyHomeCare.com/ NorthAtlanta . Don’t Stay Silent, Report It It is estimated that only one in 100 cases of fraud among seniors is reported. Many seniors

32 | northsidewoman.com | june2016

are just too embarrassed to reveal they’ve been duped. Other times they don’t know where to go to report the crime. If you’ve been a victim of fraud, don’t stay silent — report it. You should keep the Sue McCormick phone numbers of the local police, your bank (if money has been taken from your accounts) and Adult Protective Services on hand. To obtain the contact information for Adult Protective Services in your area, call the Eldercare Locator at 1-800-677-1116, or visit their website at www. eldercare.gov . The Georgia Attorney General also assists with Consumer Fraud investigations impacting state residents. Visit law.ga.gov to file a complaint. Don’t Stay Silent, Report It! Sue McCormick and Stacy Fotos are the owners of Synergy HomeCare North Atlanta and provide non-medical homecare to the seniors in the North Metro Atlanta area. Their caregivers assist people of all ages with any activity of daily living and their goal is to keep your loved ones safe and in their home for as long as possible. Call today for a free home assessment at 770-777-4781 or visit their website for more information. www.SynergyHomeCare.com/ NorthAtlanta. ■

When is the best time to get braces? By DR. JEFFREY JORDAN Jordan ORTHODONTICS

O

rthodontic treatment today is about faces not just braces. Consequently, facial esthetics dictates the proper timing for treatment. While treatment can contribute to the physical and psychological development of patients young and old, some patients require early intervention. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial visit to an orthodontist at age 7 for this reason. Most patients do not need early treatment, but if necessary, amazing improvements in facial esthetics and function can be accomplished. The common orthodontic problems that can be treated in between 7 and 9 years old include underbites and severe overbites as well as patients with crossbites and openbites. These conditions are considered muscular skeletal problems and are best addressed in the mixed dentition when the permanent front teeth are erupting. These treatments are referred to as dentofacial orthopedics because we are working with the bones of the face and not just the teeth. The majority of patients benefit from a single treatment during adolescence, as the last few primary teeth are lost and the second molars erupt. The exact age varies, but most patients are treated during the middle school years and can be completed by high school. Of course,

sometimes the teeth are slow to erupt and this can delay the completion of treatment. For this reason, starting treatment too early can prolong treatment duration and result in orthodontic Dr Jeffery Jordan burnout for the patients. Patient cooperation is important in keeping the treatments short in duration and efficient. Interestingly, girl’s teeth erupt earlier than boys of the same age. Teenagers are usually in a rapid growth phase during this period. As a result, dramatic results can be achieved with improved facial esthetics and function. For example, the smile can be made wider, the lower jaw can be advanced, or a gummy smile can be eliminated. A smile analysis dictates in what direction the teeth and jaws should be moved. These changes can be life altering for

Holistic Care is at the core of

some patients during the teen years. Of course, adults want to look good too, and orthodontic treatment for adults is more popular than ever! Invisalign, clear braces, and improvements in surgical techniques make having a fantastic smile easier too. The bulky braces and heavy forces of yesteryear are a thing of the past. Invisalign is a series of clear aligners that move the teeth. Each aligner moves the teeth a quarter of a millimeter and is worn for about two weeks. The number of aligners is dictated by how crowded or spaced out your teeth are at the beginning. Clear or ceramic braces combined with new superelastic memory wires have made traditional orthodontic treatment more esthetic and more efficient and comfortable . The teeth move a little every day and the forces on the teeth are very light. For more dramatic changes, orthognathic surgery can totally transform ones appearance if necessary. Adults who desire improved facial esthetics can benefit from orthodontics combined with surgery to correct facial imbalances. In this situation, the braces are placed on the teeth for about six months prior to surgery and remain on the teeth for a few months after the procedure. So the best time to get treatment is when you or your child is ready to improve that smile! It’s about faces not just braces. ■

In fact, it’s why we’re here

T

he Georgian Lakeside offers a Holistic Care Model with the focus on providing an environment where each individual resident is able to thrive. Our approach to care involves meeting the physiological, psychological, and spiritual needs of each individual resident. Every resident receives individualized care based on their needs when they move in. As their needs change, so does the level of care we provide. Our all-inclusive pricing eliminates the worry of increasing fees which may cause families added stress when trying to budget and manage individual finances overtime. Unlike most communities, we don’t charge more to care more. This is one thing that makes us unique. The care at The Georgian Lakeside is directed by Shantel Dennis our Health and Wellness Director. Shantel has a Bachelor Degree as a Registered Nurse with a Gerontology focus. She offers 20+ years of experience working with the Geriatric and memory care population. Our community utilizes Advanced Care Systems which help to provide accurate and accountable care to the residents in the community by using Electronic Health Records

and Electronic Medication Administration Records. These systems provide the care staff with detailed schedules, instructions, and documentation for the care of every resident which in turn increases safety when providing assistance with activities of daily living and medications. We have also taken special measures in choosing and training our Care Staff. We only hire the most qualified State Certified Nursing Assistance (CNA’s), and Licensed Practical Nurses to assist in implementing each Residents Plan of Care which is designed by our RN – Director of Health and Wellness. You can be sure that these are committed professionals who show compassion and integrity in everything that they do to meet the needs of the Residents that we serve. Our holistic programing will offer many different ways to meet our residents needs. Some activities include, strength training and exercise programs with senior-safe equipment which increase stability and promotes overall health. We use the latest technology available to engage our resident and help them meet and maintain their opium health goals. Shantel Dennis states that “This Care Model makes life fun and enhances overall health wellness by allowing each individual resident the opportunity to thrive and grow while sharing good times with friends.” This is what you can expect from the Georgian Lakeside. ■
